The title reminds me of a recurring dream that comes and goes over the past forty years or so. At first it was a nightmare, then it became a cozy old friend. It goes something like this…

You had to be there.

When your aura gets a little matted, you gotta fluff it up with some good music.

Hence my reference to Annette and Frankie on the previous thread. If you can’t kick back and get unserious, you might as well join the Rotary Club. Not that there’s anything wrong with rotors, mind you.

Aside from this sucky movie, that is. But the Rifftrax version is funny as hell.

Apparently there is another big tornado tearing up the sparsely populated country southwest of Ft. Worth now.

North Texas spring storms are really incredible, we haven’t seen storms like these in years due to the drought and the rains associated with these storms has been more than welcome.

Way to screw up a gag, me. In case the National Academy of Groovy Gif’s is reading this (and of course they are), here’s the corrected, definitive version before George Lucas gets his grubby hands on it and changes it to a treehouse of Ewoks in heat:

On second thought, go for it George.

It’s soggy and miserable here on the valley floor in the Rocky Mountains. But up high it’s been snowing a lot. So much so that Arapahoe Basin (only ski area open in Colorado at present) has to do avalanche mitigation work tomorrow morning.

I’m going skiing on Mother’s Day. I’m going to try for some Mom Line Gnar points too! That means you ski a line scored 500 or greater (something hard to ski) while talking to your mom on a cell phone. It’s 7000 extra Gnar points on top of the line score. I’m pushing it to 10,000 points if you pull it off on Mother’s Day. And it’ll be hard, cell service is very very spotty at Arapahoe Basin.

I’ve probably gone over a few heads. What is this Gnar you speak of? Well, it turns your ski mountains into a game, here’s the Gnar scorecard for Vail Mountain. Page one is just line scores, it’s page two where the game gets really fun. One of the most beautiful things left behind by the late Shane McConkey.

22 RealityBasedSteve  May 9, 2015 5:39:45pm

Went diving today, was helping with a “Discover Local Diving” (basically getting experienced divers familiar with our local dive site). Had problems with my ears from the start, got them to equalize, and then started getting serious pain in my sinus area. I had to surface, pass the dive over to the Divemaster and swim back in to shore, day was done for me.

I had been fighting some allergies the last few days, thought that I had it damped down, but I guess not. Oh well, no damage done, just bummed that I didn’t get more than 12 minutes in the water.

Netflix is great for catching up on shows that you never watched. I’m getting into “Alphas” now. Some of it’s a bit on the corny side, but it has some interesting twists.

Here in Rockwall, we’re only 1.6 feet away from being able to bitch about the rain. We were 12ft down at the beginning of the year.

I love both of them, and the other actors, so I’m very curious about that show. But I don’t do the Netflix thang, so I’ll catch up with it at a friend’s place next week. Hope they don’t bollox it, as my late Cockney stepmom used to say. At least I think that what she said. You could cut through her accent with a knife.

BEES!

Okay I lied, it’s just two photos of one bee, but he was a big giant hairy bee. He was at least an inch long and very chubby.

Both images were shot with my 40mm prime lens. Since I had no telephoto zoom with me I had to “zoom with my feet”, as they say. In the case of the bee it meant getting perilously close to him.

The first shot was taken approximately 12–18 inches away from him; the second one only about 9 inches away. I dared not get any closer because the second shot seemed to piss him off—i.e. as soon as I snapped the photo and started to move back, he stopped gathering his nectar and flew towards me, stopping about 18 inches from my face at eye level and staring me down. I put the camera down, raised my hands and backed away slowly saying, “Understood, sir—sorry to bother you. Have a nice day.” Heh.

Anyway, he went back to his work and I came inside to process my pics. I’ll post the others in a Page either later this evening or tomorrow.

AV mode, 1/60 sec at f/3.5, ISO 100
2:1 crop (50%)
AV mode, 1/60 sec at f/3.5, ISO 125
1:1 crop (100%)

As you can see, my focus was a bit off on the first photo as I was focused on the flowers the bee was feeding on instead of the bee himself—that matters when shooting at an (almost) wide open aperture because your depth of field becomes very shallow. It’s not that noticeable on the full-size photo, but when you zoom in to 1:1 or 2:1 it becomes apparent. Ditto for the second photo, there was basically nothing in focus in that one, but I think that was probably because I got closer than my minimum focusing distance (11.81 inches) for that lens. Oh well, have to pay more attention next time.

All the technical stuff aside, I love taking photos of nature, getting up close enough to be in some other creature’s world instead of my own for a few minutes. You notice so may things that you’d otherwise miss, y’know? Like the shape of the bee’s antennae or how hairy his legs are.

Okay, I’ll shut up now before you fall asleep.

I have a friend who lives in OKC and chases storms. He’s captured some stunning images and has provided solid meteorological information (he’s a trained storm-spotter and has a degree in physics).

Still, though. Every time I see him do this stuff (it’s all his Facebook feed is, really) I wonder, and I worry.

re: #40 William Lewis

Use your thumb up there around top. Work on your barre chords in easier positions, then when your hand is used to it it will be easy peasy.
* plus it isn’t really cheating as sometimes you can use the thumb technique to reach other chords quicker. In context of course. If you have a chance check out James Taylor’s technique as he uses non conventional chord shapes in his playing.

I see what you mean about the muting. My problem is still getting my fat fingers on one string (2 & 3) but not the other. I don’t have too much trouble missing the bottom two strings. Usually… so the thumb thing is a good suggestion.

While learning chords, make sure you mute the strings that require it unless you’re finger picking.

Is that the one the Mythbusters built for them? Looks more elaborate.

Mythbusters made arrangements to help them test it using jet engines, but didn’t build any of them.

Jamie did design and build a personal protection system that could be used for a single person.

It’s snowing here in the southern Denver metro area. What’s worse, it’s sticking now, to the grass, the roofs, and all the leafed-out trees whose branches may snap if this gets heavy. Lights have flickered a few times, so will have to sleep with a flashlight by the bed and my bedside lamp on so I’ll notice if the power goes off. Will have to get up if that happens and go switch Mom from the electric concentrator onto the backup emergency oxygen tank.

Lovely Mother’s Day Eve we’re having…

Twitter is working better for me today, so I was able to go through CCJ’s TL about the Michael Brown juvenile records suit.

His attempt to get the records opened was a solo effort, and it failed. Then, he solicited for help from a MO attorney to appeal the denial. That same day, he tweeted he had retained counsel — Jonathon Burns.

Burns is a RW activist in the St, Louis area AND has worked with James O’Keefe III. Turned up these links about him.

I’ve been working on a timeline of my own, juxtaposing CCJ’s tweets and posts with the legal machinations. His tweets were pretty frequent when things seemed to going well, but once those denials kept coming in, his confidence (but not his con) seemed to wane.

I love “Midnight at the Oasis”, as well as “Mad Mad Me”; in fact, it was Art Bell’s playing “Midnight at the Oasis” as bumper music on Coast to Coast AM when I listened to the show in the late 90s that got me into Muldaur to begin with.

No, I think, from Wheat-dogg’s info, he probably got referred by O’Keefe.

Before he went to law school, Burns was chief spokesman and treasurer and, as he put it earlier today, “chief bottle washer” for the Citizens for Better Transit.

Burns, 26, grew up in Florissant and graduated from Truman State with a degree in philosophy. He is married and does commercial retail work for rural telephone companies.

Even though the GOP machinery likes to sell Bush (#3) as a “moderate”, listen to him as he speaks at Je$u$-Central:

There are consequences when you don’t genuflect to the latest secular dogmas. And those dogmas can be hard to keep up with. So we find officials in a major city demanding that pastors turn over copies of their sermons. Or federal judges mistaking themselves for elected legislators, and imposing restrictions and rights that do not exist in the Constitution. Or an agency dictating to a Catholic charity, the Little Sisters of the Poor, what has to go in their health plan — and never mind objections of conscience.

Happy Mother’s Day to all mothers who look to the future, not the past.

This is the kind of bullshit that pisses me off on Mother’s Day. With 10 kids and another one on the way (no doubt in competition w/the Duggars), no schooling for the kids, tarps for a roof on a flimsy “house”, and these people claim they’re being harassed, when it seems the other way around, as evidenced by the father threatening a neighbor over the neighbor’s own water.

I think these people are the kind that would have all of us living this way, if you read this story carefully and click on to the fundraising source opened by a woman who only met these hucksters online. They keep on spitting out the kids and expect others to come to their rescue, as evidenced in the narrative there. And who in their right minds would take their dogs to a grooming service for people who appear to be raising their kids worse than dogs? Of course, they want others to buy them a van, finish off their living quarters, among other needs that they have neglected because they are anti-social assholes who think the rest of society should give them everything—living conditions from the 18th century for their kids (with a few modern luxuries for the parents, like a van, cell phones and computers).

But liberty! Constitutional rights! Never mind what their kids might be suffering or lacking—we’re in control of them and will do as we fucking well please!

‘Off-grid’ couple faces hearing to regain custody of 10 children

wave3.com

“No Trespassing” signs mark the perimeter of the Naugler’s 27-acre homestead, located off of a gravel road. Facebook page photos reveal tarps cover the wood framing that serves as the family’s quarters. There is no wired electricity, only generators. No running water and no toilets; only shallow latrines or slop buckets.

Dozens of photos posted on the social media page show the children playing in snow or mud.

“They delivered a baby up there last winter,” Metcalf said. “It was about 30 degrees below zero; it’s no living conditions for a kid at all.”

The children do not attend formal schools. Postings allude to a “free-schooling” approach in which parents provide “life lessons” to each child at his or her own pace.

Look at what they want the gullible public to buy them (and they’ve already raised $35K): gofundme.com Notice with all those boys, the only girl in that photo is the one holding the baby.

I feel so sorry for those kids. Talk about the school of hard knocks in a modern society—these parents have gone way overboard in the concept.

Part of this family (and others) is the religious zealotry as well. No one is asking them to live in a city, no one is demanding they live the same as others. But all those kids are suffering because of the decisions these assholes are making. And the parents are also dependent on the kids (they’re “no-schooling” on her FB page) to do many of the chores to keep this “blessed little homestead” going, work that only should be required of adults. The have their “land” of 27 acres, of which probably most is useless. This whole anti-social campaign, which also underpins glibertarianism, and the anti-vaxxers, and the whole crowd of know-nothings, is a rejection of reality, with which we all have to live.

Namely: 1) we are not alone on this planet, 2) in fact there are quite a few of us, and 3) we thus all have to live together harmoniously or we start to kill each other.

The year 2015 and what it means to live in the current times is too much for some people.

Capistan, a bitcoin company.

capistan.com

“Why does Capistan only work with Bitcoin?
Bitcoin provides a way to secede from the coercive monetary system of the state. When transacting in Bitcoin, there is no middleman or government agent to get in the way. One goal of Capistan is to increase the number of businesses that accept Bitcoin so we can eventually stop using dollars altogether. Additionally, Bitcoin provides near-instant transactions, negligible transaction fees, and perfect record-keeping.”

I find it odd that their “first featured project” is an incorporated (LLC) “company” owned by the Nauglers. Well, at least they claim they’re “LLC” but probably not, just to keep the law off their backs.

That’s in a residential neighborhood. She’d need a zoning variance to operate a dog grooming business there.

Am I wrong to notice the dog quarters are better than the kid quarters?

Morning all…

Happy Mom’s day to all to all you Muthas!

Mine has passed on. She’s as alive as ever and seems to reside somewhere behind my left ear. Must be why her lessons come to mind way too often.

Refresh. That’s the wrong address. Corrected. A restaurant callefd “Tokyo” is at this same address in a business district.

Also, found an old blog of hers, too. She did live in TX. Her “resume” here.

These people’s thought processes are very tied in to rightwing libertarianism (Mises, etc.), even anarchy, if you look at the husband’s FB page. The dogs are treated much better than the kids.

No. More attention paid to the dogs and taking care of them as a business than the kids, although she acts as though she loves animal more (thus, the kids are raised like animals). These people are ultra-radical in their rightwing libertarianism and anti-social behavior.

If only the Swiss had more citizens with guns in their homes…

It could have been worse. It could have been bagpipes.

The trouble with anarchy: it doesn’t pay the bills. If you got 10 kids, they need clothes. If you’re making them from scratch — wool from sheep, cotton from the fields — that means you gotta buy them. And Kentucky is not warm enough year round to do without clothing. So, despite their vaunted glibertarianism, these people have to play by some of society’s rules.

I feel sorry for those kids, though. Their folks are nutcases.

They’re donating because God and persecuted Christians. People explain what actually is going on and none of it matters. Victimhood rules the day.

Are some people are asking for refunds? When I checked this am, it was over $35K. Either that, or Capitstan/the horrible parents are cashing in some of it.

Looking at the Nauglers’ living arrangements and reading that Capistan promo blurb tells me this lady could be a consummate con-woman. Something just doesn’t smell right about the whole thing.

On the other hand, there’s a lot of dog owners in Radcliffe. It’s just on the outskirts of Fort Knox.

What kind of economic hit did that area take with the Armor School moving down to Georgia? I presume that cut the number of army personnel living in the area down appreciably.

Flanking move as part of the mobilization to invade Texas.
