Will Texas Become a Giant Bundy Ranch?

Wingnuts • Views: 30,413

The short answer is no, not the entire state, but things really are getting freaky, I mean spring 1861 level freaky, here in Texas.

Jade Helm is still 2 months away and the conspiracy industry’s seditious insanity is spreading like a contagious disease in rural areas, small towns, and “white flight” suburbs. It is likely to reach explosive pitch by the time the exercise gets here. This will happen even if Jade Helm is cancelled, since a cancellation would simply empower the kooks to settle all their other imaginary grievances.

I have been talking to local RWNJs recently. They will open up to me because I am a 65 year old white farmer and an obvious native, so they just assume I am one of them. To make a long story short, the grassroots crazy is much, much worse than what you see in even the kookiest corners of the rightwing media. Progressive friends in Lubbock and across the DFW region confirm that this is true in their areas too. It is getting to be like living in an occupied country.

I really think there is a small, but hardly negligible, chance of a Bundy Ranch episode; meaning violent, organized defiance of federal authority; on a gigantic scale. This could affect whole cities, counties, and regions. This is especially so in those areas where local law enforcement is in the hands of low IQ fascists who buy into the “sovereign sheriff” nonsense.

Progressive and liberal minded people who live in RWNJ Texas, especially those who have a public profile as such, should make at least preliminary plans to cope with a localized right wing putsch. The most likely threat would come from ad hoc militia gangs and vigilantes, assisted by rogue cops, setting up road blocks or possibly attempting to round up “traitors” and “agents.” I have heard them threaten to do both.

I have talked about the possibility of arming ourselves against this threat and that is still on the table for those who are REALLY sure they know how to handle it. The best course, however, might be to flee to safety. Get a “bug out bag” ready, and a collection of RWNJ bumper stickers to slap on your car, learn a few of their talking points and you should be safe for a short journey. Oklahoma, Arkansas or New Mexico are good choices. Louisiana is iffy because of conspiracist influence there. Oklahoma is at least as RW as Texas, but the locals never miss a chance to stick a finger in Texan eyes, so they would be glad to welcome refugees and gloat over the train wreck in their neighboring state. The Austin and San Antonio areas should also be safe.

It shouldn’t take more than a few days for legitimate authority to be restored in most areas and you can come back then.

Personally I am well prepared to defend myself, at least as well as one person can be, but I think in this case it would be more rational to be ready to go to my brother’s house in Colorado instead.

Before you decide I have gone completely over the deep end, ask yourselves what would have happened to any liberal politicians or activists who were unlucky enough to be caught inside the Bundy Ranch compound at the time of the confrontation. Remember the media who were assaulted and threatened at the roadblocks?

If I am being an alarmist, well, the RWNJs have millions of alarmists. Why shouldn’t we have them too?
In fact, you can’t preach violence, sedition, and “second amendment solutions” to millions of receptive dupes for years on end and not expect some kind of major explosion when the right match is put to the fuse.

QFT. It would only take handful of large-scale incidents of this kind to make large parts of the US ungovernable.

It is sickening that encouraging this kind of violent anarchy is a big business, and deeply ironic that such business relies heavily on first amendment protections.

When/if a Bundy Ranch type incident occurs in TX, expect Abbott to blame it on either this president, the “liberal media,” or democrats. He’ll never take responsibility for adding fuel to the conspiracy theories about Jade Helm 15, or anything else. After all, he is the guy who said that the first thing he did every morning when he was Attorney General was find another reason to file another lawsuit against President Obama.

Political pandering by Abbott, Gohmert and company was the biggest factor in pushing this scenario from “remote possibility” to “serious threat.”

Exactly. We’ve definitely reached the stage where Republican leaders have full responsibility for calming down the GOP base before it is too late.

After all, this is the very same monster that they have nurtured for decades, and the GOP leadership has ensured that the monster won’t listen to any non-RWNJ sources. So nobody else can tame the monster.

It is profoundly stupid and/or deeply cynical to simply dismiss Abbott’s gross dereliction of duty in office as a harmless bit of pandering to the GOP crazies in the base.

That bit of pandering was an impeachable offense.

I’m a Texan, too, but I’m a bit less worried.

Seems to me that Bundyism only works in isolation — as in a good distance from any town. You can get away with a lot when you’re holed up on some nutbag’s ranch away from even small towns.

You move that stuff into an incorporated area, and all of a sudden, you’ve got families and schools and churches and city fathers and banks being threatened. You’ve got a lot more people to keep your thumb on, and a lot more people who want you to sit down and shut up, at least to keep their families and businesses safe.

Militia successes have mostly come in controlled rural compounds — the Bundy Ranch, the Republic of Texas compound in the ’90s, the Branch Davidian compound. The one successful militia operation in a large city — the OKC bombing — had the rest of the militias running scared, because no one thought they were a funny sideshow anymore.

I don’t think we’ll ever see a militia takeover in Dallas or Houston, or Lubbock or Amarillo, or even Muleshoe or Dalhart. They don’t have enough people to control the population, and if they try to stamp out opposition with force, they’ll just create more opposition, both within the communities they’re trying to control and in every community watching and worrying that they might be next.

When the 9/11 hijackers were successful, it meant that no airline hijacking would ever be successful again, because everyone in the plane knows passive submission wouldn’t keep them safe. The first militia group that takes over a town of any size is going to screw every other militia group — everyone will know that the best way to survive a militia invasion is to make sure the militia members are dead before they have a chance to kill you.

I feel like the Bundy Ranch militia types tipped their hand when they started setting up roadblocks and checkpoints near towns and asking residents to see their papers.

It’s highly ironic that some Texans claim to be worried about military training exercises given that their state receives a shitload of federal dollars in the form of military installations.

16 Feline Fearless Leader  May 12, 2015 8:06:53am

The GOP will never own up to the pandering if things do go badly. DARVO will rule, and then things will be buried as the media moves on to the next sensation. And the party will simply keep the skeletons in the closet, send that crop of politicians to a career backwater, and find a new set of yelling panderers to take over the slot.

And those were just the parts I overheard. The crazy is real and it takes root in small town/isolated areas. I love my father dearly, he’s my dad, but I have no problem pointing out he is a certified RWNJ and fully ready for some form of “revolution” even better if it’s an armed one.

A tax return can take a few minutes, or it can take a longer amount of time, depending on your income and what you’re deducting.

If that’s a code for flat tax, then he’s just giving away the game. He’s all for shifting the tax burden even further on to those least able to afford it while providing a giveaway to the wealthy.

The whole reason that tax prep is a big industry is because Congress decided to provide all manner of carveouts and exceptions and deductions, and then left a lot up to the IRS to figure out how to make it work (like dealing with nonprofits that aren’t exactly nonprofit or are engaging in activities outside what a nonprofit should be).

The GOP is big on saying that they want to close loopholes, but are cagey about saying what they’re actually looking to do. And they wont go near changing anything having to do with capital gains because that’s one huge area where revenue could be generated (and where wealth accumulates because the wealthy can afford to invest still greater sums). And they continue to seek a repeal to the estate tax, which is yet another area where the wealthy are able to pass it on to their heirs unfettered, even though the tax kicks in for those with estates in excess of $5 million, which is a fraction of a percent of all taxpayers.

Yeah, and actually most people’s taxes aren’t that complicated. (Incomplete source: Doing taxes for the big green company for a few years.)

The people who have really complicated taxes, that cost several hundreds of dollars to prepare, really didn’t have complicated deductions so much. The complication was figuring out what their *income* actually was. They had their own business - what precisely were their costs so we could get to a total profit line? They inherited property and then sold it - what precisely was the value at the time of inheritance so we could get to the profit? Etc., etc. Once you have a total income, a couple of deductions and then a quick check of a percentage chart to get the tax owed is *trivial*.

re: #62 BlackPearl

Concur. My tax returns are fairly complex and get done professionally. The expense is the time spent figuring out the types of income and basis of the investment income in order to work out the actual income according to the IRS rules. And then going through the same data *three* times since the USA, state (PA), and city (Philadelphia) all have different rules on how income is taxed.

And I consider it a solid “first world problem”. I pay more taxes for 2014 - but mainly due to having benefited from the stock market run up last year. Things like the AMT and the hit-and-miss issues of estimated taxed are minor annoyances compared to the fact that a lot of people are scraping by and wondering where the cash to handle to next crisis is going to come from.

Attorney: Tulsa volunteer deputy charged in fatal shooting cancels Bahamas trip after scrutiny

TULSA, Okla. - A former Tulsa County volunteer deputy charged with fatally shooting a restrained man has canceled his Bahamas vacation after “he was ridiculed in the national press.”

Attorney Corbin Brewster told the Associated Press Tuesday that 73-year-old Robert Bates canceled the June trip because of media “scrutiny and pressure.”

Brewster says Bates had been looking forward to the vacation with his grandchildren, which was planned before the April 2 shooting. He says Bates changed his plans in recent days.

Magical thinking - that the deficit will be solved through spending cuts alone.

There is no combination of spending cuts alone that will eliminate the national debt, let alone the annual deficit.

re: #47 lawhawk

I’m really wondering if the GOP are prepared to adopt the Fair/Flat Tax BS as a party plank for next year. I notice that the argument of choice is the “ease” of filing taxes and the false promise of eliminating the IRS, but also some are trying to sell us on the idea that everybody will pay the “same” taxes, when they know that no economist worth his salt will let that pass without dying of laughter.

I’m really waiting for someone on the national stage to call it what it is: A stealth tax cut for the wealthy. It is not about helping the poor or middle class, it’s about setting a tax rate low enough that they can justify gutting the federal budget on the grounds that the new tax code doesn’t generate enough revenue to “afford” everything outside of those items they want.

The joke being that some Americans imagined that the phrase can actually refer to such a donut because “ein” was used, even though a) the use of “ein” was proper, b) no Berliners would have actually understood this as a reference to a donut (first of all because context, second because these donuts are not called Berliners in Berlin), c) Germans don’t understand the joke because they see no alleged mistake in that phrase.

It seems that some dude named pm carpenter (obviously an ee cummings fan) decided to take on Jim Wright with a post called The Political Internet’s Devolution, calling Wright’s Stonekettle post on Jade Helm ‘appallingly bad.’ Wright mentioned the post on Facebook, and his readers, naturally, dog piled on carpenter.

Butthurt ensued. carpenter wrote a long post complaining about the drubbing he was getting.

So, Wright went back to Facebook and told his readers to leave Carpenter alone, because the the beatdown was essentially unwatchable.

Then Carpenter (sorry, carpenter) complained about that. Good times.

119 Lidane  May 12, 2015 9:45:46am

The Republican party have won a pyrrhic victory here in Texas.

Yes, they run the state. Yes, they have a majority lock on the state legislature and on our Congressional legislature. Yes, the GOP keeps winning this state for the Presidential races. But all that success has come with a huge price that the national GOP doesn’t realize they’re going to have to pay.

In order to win elections, the GOP needs one thing: angry white people. Here in Texas, they have managed to carve out a whole lot of districts for themselves on the state level that are full of angry white people and have very little in the way of minority representation, if they even have minority voters at all. That means the GOP don’t suffer any electoral blowback if they let their freak flag fly and piss off minority voters at will. Why bother holding back if you’re not going to be held accountable for it at the polls?

This means they can pander on Jade Helm. They can talk about land mines on the border, and sniper towers. They can say the most outrageous, paranoid bullshit and it won’t have any effect on their political life.

Republicans spend all their time at the Congressional level actively pissing off minority voters, and pandering to just enough conservative voters to win state offices, and they win. But they win at the expense of the GOP’s image with minority voters, then they wonder why they can’t get out of the single digits on the national level.

It’s almost like these morons don’t understand that actions have consequences. And those consequences are coming home to roost on Jade Helm. If Cletus T. Yokel takes up arms against the Special Forces because Obama, it won’t be the President’s fault. It will be because the GOP have created a negative feedback loop. Yes. that kind of pandering horseshit wins elections, but people also take it seriously and the Republicans are finding that out the hard way.

I have Republican relatives. In my experience, it’s usually a case of people thinking they’re richer than they actually are and that others are just mooching off them by cheating the system.

61% of eligible Latino voters here in Texas didn’t bother in the last election. Neither side speaks to their concerns. If they could be motivated and mobilized, Texas would be as competitive as Florida nationally.

He didn’t like it, but I couldn’t just ignore it. And the dirt bike is tearing it up the grass. I know it’s hard for an 18 yr old who hates reading and education, period, or sitting still at all, to be in his situation, but he does nothing around the house, either (“girls’ work”). His mother is no help; she just complains w/o trying to do anything about it.

Islamic supremacism! Eurabia is nigh—beware the Global Caliphate!

Venice officials threaten to close mosque installation at Biennale art fair

The installation is the work of Christoph Buchel, an artist of joint Swiss and Icelandic nationality, and was designed to underline the fact that Venice, despite its centuries-old trading links with the east, does not have a mosque. […]

But Catholic authorities say that they should have been consulted over the initiative, even though the church was deconsecrated 45 years ago and has been privately owned since 1973. […]

Venice council has said that unless the correct permits can be produced by the artists behind the installation, it will be closed down by May 20.

A right-wing party, Fratelli d’Italia, has protested outside the temporary mosque and an Italian visitor refused to remove his shoes, arguing that if it was really just an art installation and not a proper mosque then he had no obligation to do so.

Luigi Brugnaro, a prominent businessman who is campaigning to be Venice’s next mayor, said the mosque was a “mistaken initiative which was done without taking into account people’s feelings in Venice”. […]

*sigh, smh*

I bought three, kept one, gave one to a friend, and gave one to my father to get him online. The one I gave a friend died, but the other two are still working fine. My father uses his every day.

Yes, plus this.

But there’s the persistence and beating the same dead horse, not funny as a parody, so those might have been lame attempts at wingnut humor. So I give 1% for that.

At least is wasn’t gunfire. Neighbor kid (20yr old) decided to build a shooting range in his back yard. Him and buds started popping off .45 rounds after I got home from work. Needless to say I was on him like stink on the S word.

We live in the county and its legal for him to shoot out here. But smart people know not to discharge in a residential area. Hopefully it’s stopped for now.

A few tweets are funny, but I think it’s mostly lame because much of it is over-the-top stereotypes.

Oh, the 18 yr old has been shooting off his guns inherited from his father (dead of a heart attack at 35) for years now. Not near the house, though, there is a deep glade and woods back of us, I’ll give him that one, but not the racism and entire RW attitude, though.

The previous owners wouldn’t have permitted any of this. B was awfully proud of his grass, keeping up the apts and grounds, and he worked very hard at it. That pisses me off, too, since he tried to be supportive of the kid, even paying him $10/hr to weed eat and use a blower on the place and give him other help after school and on weekends because B knew they were strapped for money.

166 Kryptik  May 12, 2015 10:34:18am

It’s so goddamned embarrassing what right-wingers and GOPers can spew and get mainstreamed to the point of no consequences, because ‘everyone thought’ some batshit thing would happen.

These assholes seem to own the entire fucking narrative from top down, where conspiracy ends up turned into ‘legitimate issue that Dems need to disown or they’re forever traitors’.

I’m very surprised there haven’t been protests in Cleveland, like in Baltimore and Ferguson. This was a 12 year old boy. Clear cut case of murder, on video. Five month investigation and Tamir still has not been buried. Everyone should be livid and on the streets. If I were’t 2000 miles a way, I’d be there.

Maybe I’m overreacting, but I feel like the people are ignoring Tamir.

This week, Rep. Steve Stivers (R-Ohio) will offer legislation that would block DOD from finalizing its rules until a host of unrealistic technical certifications could be made for a database of active-duty military members. The House will vote on Stivers’ plan as an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act, a major bill that establishes military funding. […]

Stivers has been one of the payday lending industry’s favorite members of Congress since he took office in 2011. Over the 2012 and 2014 election cycles, payday loan companies contributed $69,625 to his campaign, according to data from the Center for Responsive Politics.

I knew one person that was excited about this fight, but I mostly associate with civilized people. It’s weird and stupid that we still have boxing now that we know about brain injuries.

I boxed as a youth (12-15) and have picked boxing back up again to get back in shape. Right now, I only go up to light sparring, with plenty of head protection.

This fight in particular was never going to be a bloody slug-fest of a fight. These are both what I consider little guys (They are in the 160’s, I’m 215). While there are power punches, this fight was always going to be about not getting hit. The defensive maneuvers of boxing were always my focus, and it is what I enjoyed about this fight. I understand that is why many who did watch found it boring, but they should have realized based on the two fighters styles what would happen. As big a purse as this fight was, boxing really is dead, or at least what I recognize as boxing is dead. This was really the last great hype fest for a boxing match. Boxing has no well known personalities outside of these two.
