Attackers at Pamela Geller’s Cartoon Event Were Actually Killed by a SWAT Team

Debunked
US News • Views: 24,333

You may recall that the two would-be mass murderers who attacked Pamela Geller and Robert Spencer’s “Draw Mohammed” event in Garland, Texas, were reportedly killed by a lone traffic officer armed only with a pistol.

Well, that story wasn’t true: Gunmen at Muhammad Cartoon Contest Were Killed by SWAT Team.

The new details stem from an investigation by Garland police and the Federal Bureau of Investigation into the May 3 attack in which Elton Simpson, 31, and Nadir Soofi, 34, attempted to storm the contest with assault rifles.

Almost immediately after the suspects arrived, they started shooting at a traffic officer and a security officer, who were standing by a police car near a barricade set up around the event, according to Garland Police Chief Mitch Bates.

The traffic officer responded with his service revolver, wounding the two men, but they continued to fire. Four SWAT team officers arrived within seconds and engaged in a shootout with the attackers, who retrieved more weapons and ammunition. Dozens of rounds were shot before the two men were killed, Chief Bates said.

Service revolver? The police still use revolvers down in Texas?

If we can’t believe the police when there’s “good news” why should we believe what they say when it’s bad news?

If the Freepers are any indication, the wingnut response to this news will be that it’s now a cover story, whether to protect the traffic cop from retaliation by ISIS or to cover up the “truth” that two “terrorists” were taken down by a single individual with a gun and thus totally destroying the myth that one needs the government to protect them from “terror.”

From the article:

On Thursday, FBI Director James Comey said Mr. Simpson had been under investigation because of social-media postings. After agents learned that Mr. Simpson had expressed interest in the event, they sent the Garland police a bulletin that included his picture. That was just hours before the suspects arrived at the convention center in Garland, according to Mr. Comey.

However, Mr. Bates said Monday that the missive was a general email and that it didn’t link Mr. Simpson to the Muhammad cartoon event. The police officer who received it, who is part of a local FBI Joint Terrorism Taskforce, didn’t read it until after the incident, he said.

“The contents of that email would not have prevented the shooting,” he added. “Nor would it have changed the law enforcement response in any fashion.”

The “We’re a Christian nation” talking point takes another kick in the pants:

Christianity is still the dominant faith by far in the U.S.; 7 in 10 Americans identify with the tradition. However, the ranks of Christians have declined as the segment of people with no religion has grown, the survey says.

Between 2007 and 2014, when Pew conducted two major surveys of U.S. religious life, Americans who described themselves as atheist, agnostic or of no particular faith grew from 16 percent to nearly 23 percent. At the same time, Christians dropped from about 78 percent to just under 71 percent of the population. Protestants now comprise 46.5 percent of what was once a predominantly Protestant country.

I was wrong.

Harn added that off-duty officers work events at the Culwell Center every weekend, but that organizers paid the department around $10,000 for additional security that included agents with the ATF and FBI, security officers from the school district, off-duty police officers as well as SWAT officers and the bomb squad.

A lot of this has to do with conservative Christianity’s decision to make gay rights their Iwo Jima (and with “religious liberty” bills as its kamikaze pilots), I imagine. For a generation that grew up with openly gay friends and family, a religion that all but defines itself by its hostility to gays is probably doomed.

Unfortunately, just as northern Republicans were kicked out of Congress as punishment for the antics of their confederate colleagues, it looks like the relatively liberal churches are dying as non-wingnuts give up on religion altogether. Not sure what it means for the future of Christianity in this country, but it would not be a good thing if the last Christians left are Bryan Fischer’s goon squad.

He’s also got his history all wrong, as RWNJs are prone to do. By the time Lincoln was inaugurated, the war was already started. The secessions, the firing on Ft Sumpter… Lincoln had to be smuggled into DC secretly because there was credible fear the Confederates would kill him to keep him from ever taking office.

Ergo, Lincoln had no occasion to have any policy that in any way related to whether or not Dred Scott and the Fugitive Slave Act would be enforced.

I don’t think the SWAT team were there for Geller’s protection.

GARLAND (cbsdfw.com) - CBS 11 News has confirmed the FBI issued a warning to the Garland Police Department approximately 3 hours before the attack on the Curtis Culwell Center Sunday.
Social media comments through outlets like Twitter sent up the red flag. “I know there are other Elton Simpsons out there,” FBI Director James Comey said Thursday.
About 20 minutes before the shooting at a Texas cartoon contest that featured images of the Prophet Muhammad, a final tweet posted on an account linked to one of the gunmen said: “May Allah accept us as mujahideen,” or holy warriors. Among the hashtags used by the account was “#texasattack.” More

Could it be the Comcast wifi router?

I doubt it. I’ve rarely seen instances of a wifi router messing with a mobile signal. You could try testing it by turning off the router for a few minutes and seeing if there is any signal improvement on the phone.

Thank you Allegro!! That I will do.

It’s hard to believe a lot of what you see and hear in the MSM and on many on-line sites (just extensions of TV & print news) and it’s tiresome.

…the almost 2,000 pound Professional Bull Riding bull escaped after the rodeo and was last seen at the Saluda River on Dacusville Highway.

The bull is described as white with brown and black spots.

If you see the animal, you’re asked not to approach it…

I bet the bull is very pissed off.

I don’t expect an indictment, that’s how cynical I’ve become. I expect an announcement that the PD is viewing the killed as justifiable homicide, that Kenny will be allowed to return to duty, and the investigation is considered closed.

And were any of those trade deals part of the Obama admin?

No. However, as far as I can tell, US plutocrats have always been the driving force from the US side of the trade deals, and I have no evidence that the TPP is any different.

re: #81 EPR-radar

On the other hand, if the TPP is supposed to be so wonderful, why are its terms being kept secret while the administration seeks fast track authority (which lasts for 6 years, and applies to everything, not just the TPP)?

The track record of trade deals has been awful enough that skepticism about them is warranted from all points on the political spectrum.

Aren’t trade deals generally kept secret until they are done. I mean, there is a 60 day window after the deal for Congress and the public to read the deal and for Congress to vote it up or down.

Also Senators and House members can go and read the terms of the TPP draft, so it is not quite a secret to them.

Of all the criticisms, “The one that gets on my nerves the most is the notion that this is a secret deal,” he said. “Every single one of the critics saying this is a secret deal, or send out e-mails to their fundraising base that they’re working to stop a secret deal, could walk over and see the text of the agreement.” - Obama

What is the big deal if Congress gets the final say?

I think generally, in the past, we used to trust our news media. Now with cable news and the internet, there is so much bullshit. Plus the demise of traditional, physical newspapers, now often reduced to clickbait…

The truth is out there, it just takes effort to find it. And that means, sometimes, going outside your comfort zone for the truth.

The news media was designed by bullshitters to be bullshit. There was an assumed shining moment post WWII, when a few good guys made everyone think that wasn’t so.

You might want to look at this and get a broad idea. MoC will, if they haven’t already (and committee members likely have) get the bill itself to read before voting on it as law.

The vote today was a procedural one, not a vote on the bill itself.

128 The Very Reverend Battleaxe of Knowledge  May 12, 2015 1:07:43pm

I’m taking this SWAT team revisionism with a grain of salt. Plausible scenario IMO: Original traffic officer wounds both shooters, taking them out of action or confining them to their car, where they could have been surrounded and captured. SWAT goons hear the shooting, stampede out ‘roid-raging bullets all over the vicinity, killing both suspects so they couldn’t be interrogated, and are now claiming credit for the whole thing, and implicitly crediting Pam Geller with her foresight in hiring this additional security. Just not buying it.

If you jump on a cop and the cop doesn’t know that you’re unarmed, you will probably get shot, regardless of who you are.

There comes a point where ones own actions - taking multiple mood altering drugs, assaulting pedestrians and more - cause one to move from innocent to threat. I’m sorry that someone’s habits cost them their life but OTOH in the end he went out of his way to create the circumstances surrounding his death.
