Ben Carson Said God Helped Him Ace His Chemistry Exam at Yale

You may think you know how crazy young Earth creationist Dr. Ben Carson is, but you probably don’t know that he actually thinks he’s been contacted by God Himself, in a dream.

Dr. Ben Carson, retired pediatric neurosurgeon and recently announced Republican presidential candidate, gave a moving personal speech at the National Day of Prayer event in Washington, D.C., May 7.

One key story he shared was of a prophetic dream that changed the course of his life while he was a pre-med student at Yale.

Failing his chemistry course, a prerequisite for medical school, he had one last opportunity to pull off a passing grade. But the night before his final exam, still not comprehending the material, he cried out to God for a prophetic move.

“‘Lord, medicine is the only thing I’ve ever wanted to do,’” Carson recounted his prayer at the breakfast. “‘I thought that was what You wanted from me. And yet, it looks like I’m going to fail chemistry and I’m not going to go to medical school.

“And I said, ‘So would You please tell me what it is You really want me to do. Or, alternatively and preferably, work a miracle,’” he continued, eliciting chuckles from the audience.

After praying, Carson had picked up his Chemistry textbook, determined to learn the whole course overnight. But his efforts were futile, and he fell asleep.

His slumber, however, bore more fruit than his attempts at all-night cramming ever could. While he slept, God answered Carson’s prayers with a prophetic dream.

“I was in this large auditorium,” Carson described the dream. “Just me, and a nebulous figure working out chemistry problems.”

When he awoke early the next morning, the dream was fresh and vivid in his mind as he looked through his textbook.

“When I went to take the test the next morning, it was like The Twilight Zone,” Carson said. “I opened that [test] book and I recognized the first problem; it was one of the ones I’d dreamed about. And the next, and the next, and the next.”

“I aced the exam,” he said to rousing applause.

Could he be any more of a blatant pandering ass? I mean I’m sorry. I do try to respect people’s religious views but everything that comes from a Republican candidate’s mouth when it comes it religion and prayer seems to me to me to be nothing but self-serving bullshit.

Nebulous deities lying in dreams distributing crib sheets is no basis for a system of education.

I’m convinced now that Carson is some sort of savant. Brilliant neurosurgeon but holy shit what a dumbass in everything else. Or he could be from the same school of Jindal or Cruz where he acts like a moron because it’s what Republican voters enjoy seeing. Either way neither are exactly a ringing endorsement of Carson.

Ben Carson was the first surgeon to pull this off.

For the purposes of this story, I happen to believe him. He is a smart guy in his own profession. I have had classmates who struggled with chemistry and then suddenly have it all come together. He probably worked very hard at chemistry and probably was on the verge of having it come together. When it did, I guess he attributed the breakthrough to God.

Whackjob or not, I believe in recognizing the man’s achievements.

43 teleskiguy  May 12, 2015 9:01:21pm

To me, Ben Carson is the very definition of a human paradox in my mind. You’ve got to have a pretty nimble mind to have a career like Ben Carson did. Before he ever opened his mouth in the political arena, he was respected by everybody. Ta-Nehisi Coates has written quite warmly about Dr. Carson, as he grew up in Baltimore and Ben Carson was the embodiment of a black person succeeding against long odds in Baltimore during Coates’ youth. Now that he’s inexplicably running for President of the United States, he’s alienated Coates and probably countless other black people with his alignment with the GOP.

Oh, he’s also alienated people who actually use their brains, which he specializes in fixing. Hence the paradox.

At one time I was studying to become an insurance salesman*. I had to learn a pile of material for the test and a scripted routine for the company.

At the time I was experiencing a lot of lucid dreams. The night before the test, I had a dream about the test and the script. The next morning I aced both.

The brain moves ideas and concepts from short term memory to long term memory all the time but a fair bit of the movement, correlation, ordering and sifting happens during sleep.

Funny a neurosurgeon doesn’t bother to look to the natural functioning of the brain for his understanding.

*I make a horrible salesman, I can’t sell what I don’t strongly believe in.

The rails are just absolutely twisted off the track, and some of the support structures that hold the overhead power lines are down. It’s going to take weeks for all of the lines that use that junction (CSX, SEPTA, Amtrak) to get running again.

If you leave in NE Philly or Bucks County and use SEPTA’s Trenton line, you better find another to get to work for the next month or so.

I’m sure that there are folks on the board with more experience in this area than I, but in my limited professional, non-medical interactions with doctors (especially surgeons), I found that they have 100% confidence in their abilities, and that surgeons are especially prone to, perhaps unconsciously, regard everybody else as ‘support personnel’. That kind of confidence would almost have to be a requirement to be a good surgeon, but when that time in that arena is over, it doesn’t always turn off. I’ve also observed the same thing, but not always to the same degree in certain high-ranking ex-military officers. (several AF Fighter jocks come to mind)

On the other hand, one of the most easy-going, adaptable and willing to admit when he’s mistaken individuals I know is an ex Command Sergeant Major (Infantry) and former Drill Sergeant.

I always found the train whistles relaxing when we moved here, but now with all these rail disasters lately, I’m getting nervous about living ~1/2 a block from a railroad track. At least it’s all freight here—they divert the passenger trains to the Transit Center 4 or 5 blocks over.

Freight would probably make me more nervous than passenger service, honestly.

I enjoy train travel a lot, and it was definitely a lot more pleasant to take the train than have someone come and get me - particularly the Wednesday before Thanksgiving and the Sunday after.

It’s just driving some “what might have been” thoughts tonight.

There are parallels between a candidate like Ben Carson and other parts of our society.

I don’t know how many of you watched DWTS last night, but…

The best technical dancer, Nastia, went home.

This is because what counts in a reality TV show like that is not really how good one is relative to the others but how well the viewer can be manipulated.

Emotional manipulation is a universal human skill practiced by all of us. Concepts like truth, or in these cases technical proficiency, are secondary to being able to manipulate other people. Children learn early how to do that to their parents, and TV producers know how to do that, and so do politicians.

Ben Carson is using one of the older manipulation techniques out of religion - attestation of a miracle, that is, presenting an instance of special appointment by a Supreme Being.

The TV miracle workers of the past 4 decades have bilked billions of dollars out of Americans using these same tactics.

However, it is not clear how much support he and the other officers have.

President Nkurunziza is currently in Tanzania meeting other East African leaders to discuss the crisis. His aide dismissed the coup claims as “a joke”. More

Those same tracks service freight as well. When I was waiting for a SEPTA train last week on the nearby West Trenton line a *long* tankcar freight train went past. I checked the UN number and it was a crude oil train. (Headed for the refineries in South Philly or elsewhere further down the Delaware.)

Don’t want to imagine an accident/derailment of one of those in that sort of built-up area.

(The West Trenton line and the Trenton line where the accident occurred both run north out of Philadelphia with the former running west of the latter. And the commuters are now using that line with the other one closed due to the accident. Info courtesy of my neighboring co-worker who lives up that way and uses the train every day.)

(Wait a minute. Said co-worker is a about to go on two weeks vacation. Coincidence? We will have to think about that. [Side eyes co-worker who just innocently sits there drinking coffee.] ;) )

Poppycock. The total mass of the Earth remains the same, and redistributing water is not going to affect the rotational inertia to any measurable degree.

The Moon has a greater effect on the Earth’s rotation. At some point in the far, far future, Earth will be in tidal lock with the Moon, so one side of the Earth will always face the moon, the other side will be SOL for romantic moonlit walks. Purely non-professional opinion since my brother is the geologist and not me. Plus judging by a photo rather than handling.

Looks like a metamorphized sedimentary rock with pegamite intrusions. Which, depending on the source sedimentary rock (and me remembering the names) makes it a schist, quartzite, or marble/dolostone.** And, to a degree, looks like rocks near Philadelphia (Wissahickon Formation) which are a mica-schist with pegamite intrusions*.

Checking the Liuyang wikipedia page has a sample stone and that says that sample is celestine in limestone. And the celestine wiki page says that it is something that precipitates out in carbonate marine sediments.

* - Layman’s terms. Sedimentary rocks buried fairly deeply and cooked while quartz gets pushed into it and folded up as well. Then eventually gets back close to the surface or is otherwise eroded out to be seen.

** - Edit. I put in marble/dolostone since dolostone/dolomite is a limestone that undergoes some mineral replacement as magnesium replaces calcium in the calcite. And metamorphized limestone is marble.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. Thoughts and prayers go out to all those affected by last night’s Amtrak crash in Philly. Still no clue as to why the train derailed, but it’s a curved section of track that has borne witness to prior derailments. Speed and track condition will definitely be evaluated as possible causes. Apparently this section has a 70mph straight going into a 50mph curve, so that’s going to get examined along with mechanical failures, human error, and any number of other factors.

But the weather was clear and it doesn’t appear that there was any obstruction on the track at the time.

Part of the catenary (overhead power systems) was also knocked down by the crash, and it may be Friday before service is restored along the NEC. NJT is crosshonoring between Philly and NYC on the NEC.

It’s hard to believe we really need to ship freakin’ rock across the damn ocean. (And then truck it thousands of miles, probably.) Seriously? Granite? The core of North America?

Ballast for ships.

In the 19th century some of the US ports built artificial islands by having incoming ships that needed to dump stone ballast do it in a specified area. Most ended up being used as the basis for either a lighthouse or a military fortification.

Fort Sumter was built on a sandbar upon which they purposefully imported 70,000 tons of granite from New England to dump there.

Most of the mountains hereabouts are limestone — karst, to be exact — I figured the black stuff was metamorphic rock, or some kind of limestone.

This area is great place to come if you’re into geology and stratigraphy. There are many places where tectonic shifting has pushed up layers of sedimentary rock, so you can easily see the various layers.

Well, look the bright side, when the sun goes red giant, it’ll give some future civilization on hell of a show.

That won’t be for five billion years or so, but in 500 million or a billion years, the Sun’s luminosity will have increased to the point where Earth will experience a thermal runaway like Venus did a long time ago. Maybe we could put some kind of sunshade at the L1 point by that time, though….

Also, I suspect I — as a white man — was negatively affected by the Divine Affirmative Action Program, which would be the only reason why Carson got a boost from GTAS and I didn’t.

Western New York is actually pretty good for that. Need to find cuts or other exposures due to plants growing on stuff over time. Also a couple of nice escarpments a hour or two west of where he lives including a pretty spectacular drop-off due to a resistant dolostone sitting on top of some more easily eroded shales.

Area is also of interest if you specialize in Silurian Age rocks that you can extract intact micro-fossils from.

Carson got a lot of helping hands, you can bet. He was in the JROTC in HS and claims he was offered an appt at West Point. Instead, he went to Yale and majored on Psychology. Of course, it’s said that med schools don’t care what your major is. And this would have been around 1969-70 when he went to college, probably 1974-75 when he went to med school, the golden age of affirmative action from which he benefited and which his party wants to quash completely.

This is the hype from NR, so take it with a grain of salt (from Feb 2013 with no verification, I’m assuming):

“Despite having joined high-school ROTC a semester late, Carson was a superstar cadet, racking up medals in drill and riflery. He flew through the ranks, moving from private to second lieutenant in a year and change and then so thoroughly acing his field-grade exams (he set a new record) that he leap-frogged straight to lieutenant colonel, and then became one of three full-bird colonels in all of Detroit. In recognition of his achievement, a 17-year-old Carson was given the opportunity to dine with General William Westmoreland, the top U.S. commander in Vietnam, and was offered a full scholarship to West Point.”

Sad news about the train accident. I am fearful we are going to be hearing more and more of this kind of thing because of our infrastructure in this country.

I had MSNBC on last night. so it was the channel when I cranked up the screen early this morning. First thing I heard was a report with them stating there is no evidence it was ISIS terrorist related.

I just don’t know what to say about that. Anyone want to weigh in?

I guess I am just a bit worried that we are getting to the point the terrorists want us. Worried about going outside because of ISIS. Will everything that happens have to be run through the terrorist involvement filter?

Frankly, I am just a little more worried about things like cops, the death of the middle class, the weather. Maybe I am wrong from not moving ISIS up the list.

Co-worker who rides that line said that the accident occurred at the start of an S-curve, where the speed limits drop from 70mph to 50mph. Stresses on track are also higher there, so a track failure is possible.

That anyone leads reporting on this with the “We don’t think it is ISIS” are being complete idiots. The investigation should be that it was an accident first and not terrorism unless there is something there that seriously indicates that is was sabotage. Otherwise the reporting is simply fearmongering and disrespectful to the dead and injured.

The Vatican could and should play a role in the Israel-Palestinian peace process, but it also requires having Israeli and Palestinian leaders interested in peace, or at least stopping disastrous conflicts (most people would settle for a cold peace than a warm one, when the alternatives are so much worse).

As it is, the Israelis have started to loosen some restrictions in recent weeks, including allowing Palestinian tagged cars entry into Israel. Baby steps that should be expanded in coming weeks.

They’ll do as they’ve been doing for years: They’ll write up a bill with paltry amounts of funding, just enough to keep the projects running for a few more months, and fund it with cuts to programs they oppose. When the bill goes nowhere, they’ll accuse Democrats of not caring about working Americans and wanting to put them out of jobs to protect “sacred cows,” and the pundit class will make excuses about how this is just further proof that “both sides do it.”

Lather, rinse, repeat.

Seeing a greater than normal amount of derp-age, short memories, and whining from my IT co-workers. We just started open enrollment period for the health care electives.

Plans changing, options dropped, premiums increasing, and new options with complications and different sorts of tax-free savings plans. With further complicated options, etc. etc. HR presentation stated *on the first slide* that part of this was company adjusting offerings to avoid the 2018 ACA “Cadillac plan” penalty.

So I heard lots of whining about ACA, etc. Seems these same people don’t recall the fact that premiums jumped by larger percentages annually *before* ACA. Or that they held steady and the presentation indicated that the company was eating part of or all the increased costs that year. One factor is the the high-end plans with a higher premium cost, high coverage percentages (like 90/10), but low deductibles are going away for plans where you are going to be hit for most of the initial health care outlays ($1000 or so) that are not preventive in nature like wellness exams.

Gack. I can see that turning into something like fracking operations.

Operations by small “private” railroad that is legally isolated, but still controlled by, larger corporation like CSXT. Latter gets the profits, but can jettison the private operator if an accident occurs that will lead to costly suits. Plus a few levels of sub-contractors in charge of maintenance so that negligence suits there can never get far enough up the chain to reach anyone important either.

I figured his wanting the press to get his story out there had more to do with the hope that his fellow conservatives would see his plight as a consequence of Obamacare and save him from his own stupidity.

232 lawhawk  May 13, 2015 7:51:27am

I’m seeing a couple of reports indicating that a SEPTA train that had traversed this section of track had some kind of incident earlier in the day. Some kind of projectile ended up damaging the lead car, leading to the train being disabled.

That sounds like some kind of object being on/near the track and being kicked up. It is possible, then, that some kind of foreign object was on/near the track that might have led to this problem, though that’s one aspect of the investigation that will have to be determined.

But that has me thinking once again that there’s far too much ROW that is unprotected and easily accessible. Too many people trespass (and are frequently killed in trespasser incidents as NJT would say, which covers accidental and suicide incidents), and the ROW isn’t cleared of debris in any consistent manner either.

It all goes back to what the agencies can do with their budgets strained under both capacity issues and lack of support from the government. Do more with less, and infrastructure needs fall by the wayside.

A staggering amount of married women — roughly 92 percent — have undergone female genital mutilation, according to a new survey by Egypt’s Ministry of Health. While this number has actually declined from 97 percent since the last time statistics were released in 2000, it remains disturbingly high, particularly since the practice was criminalized there in 2008. The majority of women surveyed (between 15 and 49 years old) said they underwent the practice between the ages of 9 and 12.

IIU the regs C, every train must still have an engineer and a conductor. It’s the brakemen they’ve done away with over the years. Plus on passenger trains there will be the stewards. Still the engineer is the one actually controlling the train and will be the one actually accountable in the event of an accident like this one. Gut feeling? 296 lawhawk  May 13, 2015 8:31:50am

re: #292 makeitstop

It goes back to what I’ve been saying for quite some time. They’re capable of getting serial killers and mass murderers into custody (see Boston bomber, Aurora killer, etc.) but routinely can’t take other suspects into custody, even when they’re unarmed.

Moreover, it would appear police simply don’t train sufficiently to have a nonlethal way to get mentally ill suspects into custody.

I know some others here have noted that hospital workers are able to deal with violent mentally ill patients without killing them, so it can be done.

There needs to be a sea-change in how police are trained to use force, deadly force, and in particular deal with suspects who may be mentally ill because they are disproportionately ending up dead at the hands of officers who claim justification in use of deadly force.

There are likely countless situations occurring all across Europe every day that mirror those in US cities (similar population size between US and Europe), and yet the police in Europe don’t end up shooting and killing at nearly the rate they do here. Meanwhile, the national transportation spending is likely to grind to a halt May 31 as funding is going to run dry. The GOP has no plan to fix that either.

No effort to raise the gas tax. No increase in revenue from other sources. Refusing to consider infrastructure bank.

Nothing.

Meanwhile, infrastructure continues crumbling, and the GOP simply shrugs off its responsibility.

Damn it, They take care of escaped animals from the zoo, or a wild animals that have wandered into an urban setting better than the police take care of humans.

How about tranquilizer darts for humans? I don’t know all the drugs, but I would think there has got to be some kind of momentarily debilitating drug that can allow the cops to take down anyone long enough until they get him cuffed up or in some kind of a straight-jacket or something.

THIS ALL SUCKS. The cops are humans that cannot “protect and serve.” They are more inclined to shoot and slab.

(Yeah…I am more than pissed off by all this shit. And truthfully, I do not see one person or organization doing anything about this.)

382 lawhawk  May 13, 2015 9:55:34am

Q:

A:

That, in a nutshell is why. The GOP is dedicated to starving Amtrak of funding, and then taking what revenue is generated on the NEC, its most profitable route, and spreading it to the rest of the nation, where most routes are revenue-losers. At the same time, Congress refuses to provide sufficient funds to cover infrastructure needs.

The NEC alone has a ton of infrastructure that is more than 100 years old and in dire need of replacement.

That includes in the NYC metro area alone: The Portal Bridge (which regulars at LGF would know I rail about on a regular basis because that bridge is a constant source of frustration for commuters into NYC from New Jersey); Hudson River tunnels (ARC was cancelled by Christie, but no action taken on its superior replacement, Gateway, which needs massive funding to make happen before the existing tunnels fail from Sandy-related damage); a half dozen rail bridges in Connecticut that are a source of problems along the line of the Portal Bridge; or the Sunnyside Yard Harold Interlocking that is a major backup for trains heading North to Boston because trains have to cross traffic heading in the opposite direction and the Amtrak bypass is still in development (a separate project, ESA is supposed to allow LIRR trains access to Grand Central Terminal, but that wont fix the counter-flow issues).

It doesn’t include the Baltimore tunnel, which is where the NEC mainline goes from 4 to 2 tracks on a tight radius curve, reducing speed and constant source of congestion; and power systems up and down the NEC that can’t take harsh weather conditions, increased traffic, and/or higher speeds that a true HSR would need.

The cost to bring Amtrak up to a state of good repair and modern infrastructure comparable to European rail networks? Tens of billions.

Or the cost of a handful of F-35 fighters.

Umm, actually, it would - because:

1) you wouldn’t need to have these slow zones because the trains would be able to maintain the higher speeds through turns.
2) infrastructure includes technologies installed on tracks and on trains that would automatically reduce speeds as required for stretches - limiting the potential for derailment - it’s call PTC, and it’s been mandated for years, but delays have been ongoing over getting sufficient funding and Congress may be pushing back that deadline too over railroad reluctance to spend on it.

re: #365 funky chicken

I’m honestly shocked by these posts. He’s a disgusting guy, but wow. This is so disgusting I can’t even fashion a response or rebuttal.

I wonder if in his past Chunky C tried to be liberal and got drummed out of that, most likely in high school. So, he reacted to all of that by becoming a conservative in college and writing a book on Calvin F’n Coolidge. Probably thought he could get some cred by doing a study on a fairly unknown conservative president.

In the past couple years I think he has tried to fit in with just about every conservative group going to see if he could make that go by setting up a wingnutty site like Breitbart. Obviously that is not going to well, and now he is most likely seen by those he wanted to impress as some kind of toxic character to avoid.

So, what is left? Looks like it is to scrape the bottom of the barrel by being a pure race-baiting hater to see if that has traction. He’s down there with the scum now.

So, if that is the case, where does he go next when that all blows up? Scraping scum isn’t an ideal way to make a journalism career.

What you say is true so far as it goes, but it remains in the GOP’s lap that the rails were so bad that when that train went into that S curve that they failed no matter what speed the train was going.

This is why we need to cut our carrier air groups in half, cancel the F22 & F35, along with a 50% cut in the DOD budget and put that money into the things our nation needs rather than for what egotistical shitbirds want it spent on.

This was a similar situation to the recent Metro North crash in the Bronx, where the train was going too fast into a curve, and simply blew off the tracks, killing a bunch of people.

The engineer in that instance later claimed that he had sleep apnea or otherwise fell asleep on the job (an overnight train run). It’s possible that we have a similar situation here. They’ll have to look at the engineer’s log of runs, sleep before the accident, and whether he was on medications/drugs.

I’ve always been a night owl, so working graveyard—which was a majority of my working life—was no real problem. It was swing that threw me for a loop. With graveyard you may be at work when everybody else is asleep and asleep when they’re at work, but in between you can interact with the rest of the universe. On swing, you’re in your own little isolated time warp. I would get near-suicidally depressed after a while.
