World Class Flamenco Singing: Diego El Cigala: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

YouTube

Every now and then, if we are extremely lucky, we are witness to a musical game changer. That is the rare musician who single-handedly alters the direction of a genre though the power of musical vision and artistry.

Diego El Cigala is one of those game changers.

While he comes from the world of flamenco, he has deftly expanded his expressive range by applying his unmistakable voice to boleros, Spanish copla, tangos, jazz and various combinations of all of the above.

See and hear for yourself how one musician can create something completely new by drawing on traditions that are centuries old. — FELIX CONTRERAS

Well, you won’t see this every day. CCJ and GotNwes tweeting at the same time.

BTW, UpChuck is now tweeting that the Amtrak engineer should get the death penalty, y’know, after due process ‘n’ all.

He’s already posted at his blog that the poor schmo caused the crash, so all this “due process” bullshit is just CCJ trying to pretend to be fair-minded.

North Koreans live in fear of their Great Leader, no matter who he is. One even mildly critical remark can be reported by stool pigeons to the police, who will come and take the person away, perhaps forever. Even looking less than enthusiastic when praising Kim’s glorious achievements can prove fatal. So, if you happen to see videos of public demonstrations of grief or joy, the people all seem to be overacting, to avoid police entanglements.

Read a story about a reporter granted access to North Korea. He was allowed to visit a Buddhist temple there, but didn’t ask the monks any questions about their beliefs because he didn’t want to get them into any trouble with the government minders. As he was preparing to leave, the head monk stopped him “You didn’t ask us about our beliefs!” The reporter said he knew just by looking at the monk that he was prepared to give the State approved answer to the question and was scared to death he would be reported for failure if the reporter left without getting to hear it.

Nguyễn Văn Thiệu was president of the Republic of Vietnam during my stay there. When he ran for re-election the local police would reward people for informing on those who spoke out, even privately among friends, against Nguyễn. The penalty for speaking out ran from an admonishment to being conscripted as unarmed battlefield labor.

More recent reports from NoKo are not much different from the book. Deming covers Asia and still reports about North Korea from time to time. I’m not sure if they will let her back into the country, however.

Even the Chinese scratch their heads at Kim-istan. Beijing doesn’t trust Kim any more than the rest of the world does.

Here is something…. I can’t sign in to my CenturyLink account. I keep getting “Username and password don’t match”. So I went the “forgot password” route and changed my password. Tried to sign in—“Username and password don’t match”. So I tried “Forgot username”. How could I forget the username? It’s just my email address, right? Sure enough, came back as my email address—ALL CAPS. So I try to sign in username ALL CAPS, but as soon as I switch to the password box, it drops back to lower case. “Username and password don’t match”.

I’m about to tear my hair out.

Vietnam is still a one-party nation, like China, but also very capitalistic, again like China. Whether Thieu’s version of one-party government would have been than Ho Chi Minh’s version is a question we’ll never be able to answer, but in the end, things have turned out OK for the Vietnamese. It’s not paradise, but it’s certainly not a hellhole like North Korea or the dreaded lifelong Communist enemy of the USA.

My bank here in China requires my name be in ALLCAPS, because whatever. If someone wants to transfer money to my account, using mixed case fails.

Also, the bank made my given name my family name, because in China the family name comes first. That adds to the confusion.

For civil cases, such as lawsuits, state statute of limitations laws define the time period in which a suit must be filed, as measured from the date of the incident. For criminal cases, the statute of limitations prohibits prosecutors from charging for the commission of a crime after the passage of a specified number of years. Different states have different statutes of limitations for various types of civil actions and crimes, and California is no different. For example, there is a one-year time limit to bring defamation cases, but a four-year limit to sue for debt collection. Click on the links below to learn more about California’s statutes of limitations.

New Zealand fascinates me. A beautiful country and the scenery is magnificent in “Top of the Lake”. Crime, however, seems high and many go unreported, esp sex crimes, although crimes rates seem to have fallen in this century with better policing but also because minor matters are often settled w/o them. Maoris are more often the victimes of crimes, and Maori women suffer twice as many sex crimes as white women.

When it comes to God, falsifiability should be decoupled from testability.

Assuming that God’s existence doesn’t contradict logic (in which case God would, indeed, be proved not to exist; but good luck with finding a proof general enough for all varieties of God), it cannot be falsified empirically, that much is obvious. But it doesn’t mean that it cannot be confirmed empirically (if God himself allows/wants it to be confirmed, of course). Thus while testing God’s existence empirically we will never disprove it (so it’s unfalsifiable) yet we may, by chance, confirm it. So it’s partially testable.

Today’s quandary. Should I continue to call Chuck C Chuckles or Chucky, especially after Bob Cesca implanted the image of Chucky in my brain with his latest banter.

I’ve decided that I’ll go with Chucky from now on. After all, the fictional Chucky is a sociopathic creature who also happens to be a ginger without a shred of humanity and seems to delight in wallowing in the misery of others, that is when he’s not causing the misery himself.

Just like Chuck C.

Chucky attempted to insert himself into a story about which he had no clue (yet again) - the Amtrak crash. He insisted that the root cause was affirmative action (when the race/gender of the engineer - who he called the conductor was not yet known). Then, he jumped to the conclusion that he was gay so therefore he was doing drugs and therefore responsible for the deadly crash.

At each step, a responsible journalist would have asked a completely different set of questions, attempting to suss out what was going on, who knew what, and when, and tried to piece together the report.

Chucky has done the exact opposite - jumping to conclusions that happen to be wrong at every turn.

The engineer’s race is irrelevant. The engineer’s gender and sexual orientation are irrelevant.

Chucky completely ignores what might be relevant: that the engineer may have dozed off, that he may have made a fatal mistake in running faster than he should have through both the preceding track section and carried too much speed into the curve where the crash occurred, and that this accident, like several others, including a December 2013 wreck on Metro North, could have been completely avoided had PTC been implemented and installed on the trains across the nation, but Congress and the railroads have been pushing to delay implementation.

Then there’s the fact that Amtrak had begun installing PTC along the NEC, but not this section. And that the GOP had just shredded what meager allotment Congress gives to Amtrak annually. $250 million less than what Amtrak had been given by the USG.

That’s all with Amtrak estimating that they’re short billions of dollars to maintain a state of good repair on the NEC, let alone all their national rail assets.

You want the real story - that’s it.

Chucky’s just hoping to get attention from the misery of others, and he succeeds because he’s a excrementalist. It’s what he does, and while some people think that ignoring the likes of him will make him go away, that doesn’t happen. Online people like Chucky gain significant followings and they get to spread their noxious lies, smears, and obfuscations.

The pushback against Chucky and his ilk needs to be constant, strong, and direct.

He lies. He smears. He doxes. He uses Twitter in this fashion every single day. He uses that platform for propaganda, and it must be confronted and challenged, every single day.

It’s not really central to the discussion, but “concussion requiring stitches” does not compute — concussion and cuts don’t have any necessary relationship. In fact (as we’ve recently been learning), concussion might have no immediate symptoms at all.

Or as an Independent contractor.

Whatever the case, he’s piled up several jobs on his resume, all within a 4-5 year period. A prospective employer would look at that track record and wonder why. HR checking his Twitter TL or his blog would just about kill any chance of him landing a regular job. Chucky’s efforts so far in building his media empire have been a colossal failure, so his long term earning prospects look pretty dim.

So, if you happen to see videos of public demonstrations of grief or joy, the people all seem to be overacting, to avoid police entanglements.

The similarities between the Kims and Stephen Harper is why I refer to the current Canadian Prime Minister as Our Dear Leader. He demands the same sort of blind obedience. He can’t have people disappeared though. Yet.

He’s sure enough working on it though.

These Rightwingers only care about fetuses in the womb but have absolutely no problem cutting funding for programs to help poor children or poor parents. Those babies are on their own once they’re out of the womb.

Indeed. Perhaps someone should point out the pain children feel when they’re hungry, sick, or teeth rotting from lack of money for care. How about cold or bitten by bed bugs and rats? Compassion. Right.

Probably wise, although I suspect the Chinese Ambassador to NK is one of the positions less likely to be sentenced to death in the country.

I could never be ambassador to that place. Between eye rolling, hysterical laughter and helping people get out of the hell hole I’d probably have my Canadian citizenship revoked so that Kim III could play with me.
