Some Ideas for Saving Twitter From Its Trolls

Trolls stink
Internet • Views: 48,299

Here’s a good article with a list of eight ideas to Save Twitter From Its Trolls.

Everyone knows that Twitter has a serious, unsolved problem with abuse and harassment on its platform. I know it. Twitter knows it. If you’re a frequent Twitter-user — particularly a female — you likely also know it, too, because according to the Pew Research Center, more than seven in 10 Internet users has witnessed online abuse.

Frustratingly, however, none of this mounting awareness seems to have resulted in substantive change. Yes, Twitter has recently streamlined its abuse reporting process and softened some of the language in its abuse policies. But after each and every reform rolls out, there’s usually a backlash from activists and victims’ advocacy groups, complaining that the new protections are too weak, or too cosmetic, or too easy to evade.

As if to further prove the point, a recent analysis of Twitter abuse by the group Women, Action and the Media! found that even when reports are vetted by a third-party group, Twitter takes action on only 55 percent of reported abuse.

Inspired by that unending cycle, we turned to a group of experts — victims, advocates and academics — to ask what concrete, anti-harassment tools they would introduce. The responses varied widely, from tweaks to Twitter’s fundamental user-interface to entire about-faces in policy. Put them together, however, and you have a pretty clear vision of what a troll-free Twitter could be.

Read the whole thing.

Excellent ideas

Maybe a General Strike against Twitter for a day until they include more protections and make them stick?

They seem awfully cavalier when people express real fear about being harassed and stalked.

Oh no.

This is eerily reminiscent of that plane crash in the Alps.

“Sumwalt said video from inside the cabin shows that 65 seconds before the crash, the train’s speed went above 70 mph. Just 16 seconds before the end of the recording, the train’s speed went above 100 mph, Sumwalt added.”

That’s the NTSB saying that just a little while ago. I had tried to find the video of today’s NTSB press conference to get the latest on the train crash. I have not found the video yet but I found this and decided to share. This ‘quote’ is all over the news.

I’m not going to read to much into this until more data comes out. Mainly because of the many cases of someone hitting the gas when they meant to hit the brakes. Also, take into account, he also hit the brakes right before entering the curve. My take right now is that he throttled up when he meant to throttle down (hence doing 70 mph in 80 mph section), realized his mistake and hit the brakes to slow down, but was to late.

35 teleskiguy  May 14, 2015 5:34:19pm

re: #29 Weet

Preliminary evidence doesn’t look good. The corridor the train was travelling through is notorious. A quick Google Maps search of the area indicates several turns in the tracks, with the place where the wreck occurred a rather pronounced almost-90-degree curve in the tracks. 106 m.p.h. in a 50 m.p.h. zone is egregious, to say the least.

Was reading about this today. At first I was like ooh a Sudanese Princess…yes…then I read the story and was like..um…wtf?

Disney’s Sudanese Princess Movie Will Have White Main Characters, Be Egregiously Racist

Yesterday The Hollywood Reporter wrote that screenwriter Stephany Folsom had been tapped to write Disney’s latest princess movie, a “unique princess tale inspired by the true account of an American [white] man claiming a territory in Africa and proclaiming himself and his family its royal rulers,” which, uh…where to begin?

THR went on to explain that The Princess of North Sudan will focus on

[…] an American dad whose daughter asked if she would ever be a real princess. That question set the man on a search for a region in the world that was disputed, eventually finding a territory named Bir Tawil, an area between Egypt and Sudan. In June of 2014, he flew to the area, planted a flag and, calling it the Kingdom of North Sudan, claimed it for himself and his family

.

I mean it’s sorta based on a true story. From Jezebel:

Disney’s Movie About a White Princess of Sudan Is Probably a Bad Idea

Disney has a movie in the works about a white man who buys land in Sudan so that his daughter can be a princess. Interesting. Sounds cool.

In fact, The Princess of North Sudan is based on a true story. In real life, a farmer from Virginia named Jeremiah Heaton traveled through the desert to an unclaimed area bordering Egypt and Sudan, where he planted a flag and the seed for his daughter Emily’s future imaginary kingdom.

By the time Emily turned seven last year (on June 16), her dad had a literal flag up in North Sudan and declared her a (white Nubian) princess. A cool thing to do if you have the advantage of taking over some far away land…

Wow. Why do I imagine a room probably absent of non-white folk reading this story and thinking…”hell yeah…now this is gonna be a fun wholesome family film”…yeah for who??/

I mean…no one said, “um guys, I’m not too sure about this one…”

You remember the whole “unintended acceleration” idiocy, right? People would swear up and down they were slamming on the brake when they were obviously hitting the gas. I think some of them even got some money from Audi for it. (How Audi got scapegoated for that, I don’t know.) The human mind can play tricks.

If I remember right, he hit the brakes 11 seconds before the turn. 54 seconds after the speed increase. He fucked up. No question about it. But I highly doubt it was intentional like CCJ is claiming. If the PTC had been in place, his mistake would have been over-ridden by the fail safe system.

As for the time lag in noticing his mistake, what else was he doing in in the cab? Did these requirements distract him? This is why we have post accident investigations. Find out what went wrong and fix them. Unlike CCJ and others, the NTSB wants facts, not hyperbole.

What continues to stick out to me is how sudden the acceleration was and how short the interval was between the application of emergency brakes and the derailment. All of it happened in under less than 5 minutes, which makes me uncomfortable writing it off as simple negligence. If the high speed had been constant for much of the trip or over a longer period, it might make sense. But less than a minute? Nah, something more was going on here.

The High Road Wins
How and why Minnesota is outpacing Wisconsin

Minnesota and Wisconsin offer something close to a laboratory experiment in competing economic policies. Since the 2010 elections of Democratic Governor Mark Dayton in Minnesota and Republican Governor Scott Walker in Wisconsin, these neighboring states with similar populations and economies have pursued radically different strategies. Dayton embraces good government, progressive taxation, and high-wage policies, while Walker has chosen shrunken government, fiscal austerity, and a war on labor.

Great stuff! UpChuck is going to have an aneurysm when he listens to it.

Yes we’re still under the uncertainty of the recall because you know, right wing economic policies are like frightened turtles..

Looking at my #89, I now realize this can be interpreted in any number of ways, including outright offensive ways.

For the LGF audience, I’ll provide correct context. I found out Lindsey Vonn started dating serial adulterer Tiger Woods, so I divested myself from Ms. Kildow (her real name) on Twitter because it made me physically ill to know that the greatest woman skier ever was involved with the greatest golfer ever (I FUCKING HATE GOLF!). That, and the fact that Tiger is a poor human being when it comes to respect and admiration of women.

Well, Lindsey is a smart and strong woman. She found out about sleazy Tiger sometime this winter, and broke off the relationship publicly, in the most benign way possible.

I can understand the “mutual break-up” talk. Lindsey, even her being “The Greatest Woman Skier In The World” probably doesn’t have much leverage or say with regards to one Tiger Woods. When their relationship first started, I took the cynical thinking way, thinking “Lindsey’s worth just a few mil, Tiger’s worth a hundred mil” and thinking that Lindsey was making a business decision.

I’m pretty sure I was wrong. And I probably shouldn’t be so cynical.

In three months, he’ll repeat his claim that he’s never threatened to sue anyone…

Do you really think it will take three months? I think three days may be more likely.

I predict CCJ will take to his blog soon to write another waambulance piece about how unfair Bob and Chez are, and Charles, too.

So quoting him is “making things up” about him? Is there a name for this theory? Is it “Gingrich’s Law”?

I try to keep my direct correspondence with UpChuck to a minimum. Tonight, though…

GotNews has published “dick pics” of the engineer (via Shannon Knutsen) and quoted liberally from the railfan site Bostian posted to.

CCJ boasts:

Using some gotnews.com sleuthing, we found some interesting posts from one of the train forums.

By that, I’m sure he means he read the New York Times profile of Bostian.
nytimes.com

In posts on the website trainorders.com — where train enthusiasts and employees congregate — a writer who used the handle bwb6df and signed many of his posts as “Brandon Bostian” routinely chided railroad companies for not doing more to prevent accidents, saying in one post that he found the specter of human error “frightening.”

That writer also used other identifying information matching what is known about Mr. Bostian.

Wow big lightning flash, few seconds and one long loud thunderclap. Okay, I’m only impressed because Los Angeles gets that so rarely.

Come up here. We get some impressive light shows, especially around Calgary.

re: #45 Bubblehead II

If I remember right, he hit the brakes 11 seconds before the turn. 54 seconds after the speed increase. He fucked up. No question about it. But I highly doubt it was intentional like CCJ is claiming. If the PTC had been in place, his mistake would have been over-ridden by the fail safe system.

Thanks. Aside: I didn’t know and don’t care what CCJ says.

I did see the info that Charles posted above about projectiles hitting trains that night. I found that out the night of the crash (about a specific SEPTA train), and wrote my friends about it. Mayor Nutter said it was ‘unrelated’ in a presser the next day, however. If this crashed train was also hit by projectiles, it could certainly explain a distraction that affected the engineer’s ability to deal with the speed of the train properly.

While investigating the ‘projectile hit windshield’ theory, I also found this article yesterday, where an Amtrak conductor said this:

“My take on the whole thing is there must have been impact on the window to get that kind of damage,” Callanan tells ABC Action News in an interview recorded overnight in Tampa. … “And when I saw that on the right-hand side of the engine, it looks like it struck something and I don’t think it was the guy hitting his head.”

Amtrak conductor speaks

Here’s a twitter feed from the night of the crash where the ‘projectile hit windshield’ was reported.

WAM also cleared Gamergate of being a “misogynist hate group that threatens and harasses women”. They analyzed the data, and BOOM. All lies disproven. All accusers proven wrong (despite profiting from the accusation quite nicely).

But that can’t be true. I *FEEL* like Gamergate harasses women. WAM are clearly wrong. After all, I heard that someone heard that someone heard that someone heard that Gamergate harasses women, so there you go! PROOF. Besides, WAM are probably just a bunch of neckbeard virgin loser men pretending to be women. YOUR FACTS END WHERE MY FEELINGS BEGIN!

Also, look how it all started; A butthurt ex with an axe to grind.

re: #112 weltallica

I had to do some digging to find out what was going on, but One Angry Gamer basically came to the conclusion he wanted to, rather than what was said. The thought process he used was that only .66% of the accounts on this autoblocker list were associated with harassment. What he failed to realize (or more likely ignored) was that twelve percent of *all* harassment on twitter directed towards women came from gamergaters.
