GOP Clown Car Watch: The Jeb Bush Backflip: ‘I Would Not Have Gone Into Iraq’

Knowing what he knows now, would Jeb know what he knows now?
Politics • Views: 31,563

Is he triangulating because his aides let him know how disastrous it would be to still support the Iraq War at this point, or is he actually expressing an honest opinion now? Who knows! In the 2015 GOP Clown Car, not even the clowns know what they really believe: Jeb Bush Fully Walks It Back on Iraq: ‘I Would Not Have Gone Into Iraq.’

After nearly a week of confusion over his position on Iraq, the Middle East, and the role of his brother as an adviser, Jeb Bush fully walked back his position that he would have gone to war in Iraq — even knowing what we know now.

“So here’s the deal,” Bush told an audience in Arizona, “if we’re all supposed to answer hypothetical questions, knowing what we know now, I would not have engaged. I would not have gone into Iraq. That’s not to say that the world is safer because Saddam Hussein is gone. It is significantly safer.”

The remarks come after Bush was asked on Fox, “Knowing what we know now,” would he have authorized the war. “I would have,” he answered, then pivoted to try and say that Hillary Clinton would have, too. Clinton voted to authorize the war as a senator, but has since called that vote a “mistake.”

Josh Marshall thinks this could be the end of the line for the few remaining Iraq War dead-enders: How Jeb Bush Triggered an Iraq War Watershed.

If you don’t think the Iraq War was a terrible fucking idea there’s no hope for you.

Some people (I’ll say millions of [WASP] people) in the United States will look at this and nod their heads, saying to themselves “That’s how this country will return to greatness!”

4 goddamnedfrank  May 14, 2015 8:38:32pm

The thing is Hillary can at least say she was lied to, that the Bush Administration cooked the books on Iraq and withheld crucial evidence. It doesn’t really excuse her in my eyes but it’s at least an internally consistent position and lines up with the limitations, however self imposed, she operated under when she gave Bush her consent to go to war using his own judgement. She can say in effect “I was an overly credulous idiot and was sold a bunch of shit.” In effect, “fool me once …”

Jeb has no analogue to that, he wasn’t in the Senate, and he’s GW’s brother, so when people ask him if he still supports the war the logical unstated portion of that question is “if you were in your brother’s position.” In that place he’d have been the one selling the bullshit, presenting Curveball as a legit intelligence asset, forcing the CIA analysts to come up with aluminum tube nonsense, opening up an intelligence shop inside the Pentagon to invent WMD stories from whole cloth.

So yeah, it’s comparatively maybe a little bit unfair. I still don’t have any sympathy for him because he’s a bigoted elitist fuckball who’s had years to come up with some kind of strategy for threading this needle, but we should probably at least acknowledge that there was no easy answer for him here.

5 Joe Bacon  May 14, 2015 8:40:34pm

There’s no doubt in my mind that Jeb wants to continue with what his brother started. A vote for Jeb is a vote for war in Syria and Iran.

Why do folks who comment at LGF have to be so lucid and largely in charge of the arguments being presented? You guise are too sane!

7 goddamnedfrank  May 14, 2015 8:45:58pm

It’s so easy to forget all the context surrounding Bush’s decision to go into Iraq too. For just one example look at Operation Jawbreaker run by Gary Berntsen in Afghanistan. Berntsen fucking begged the chain of command for more troops to seal off the Afghanistan / Pakistan border during the Battle of Tora Bora, and was uniformly rebuffed. In his book Berntsen blames this directly for Osama bin Laden’s escape, because Bush Administration thought they could wrap up Afghanistan on the cheap, using local tribal members to guard the border instead of US troops that were being pre-staged en masse for an Iraq operation that was still being sold as anything but inevitable at that point.

Jeb is still bullshitting. If he thinks “safer” = many middle eastern/Asian/African countries with essentially no leadership or governance whatsoever suffering takeovers from well-armed and ruthless jihadist organizations vs. Saddam who was well-contained and even worse off than we thought… Then sure. We are better off.

Invading Iraq put American troops in a Wild West bar with three vicious gangs who hated each other: Shia, Sunni, and Kurds, waving knives at each other, screaming, and us standing in between them, trying to keep the peace.

It was an impossible position from Day 1. But it fed the Neocon dream of establishing a stable democratic state as a wedge between Saudi Arabia, Iran, and Syria, which would protect Israel.

Nah, not so much. We bled and the Israelis kept yelling about Iran’s nuclear ambitions. So the Neocons absolutely fucked the dog, and because of the SOFA pact that GW signed, we’ve got ISIS. Yay for us!

As far as Jeb Bush is concerned, Gail Collins has a lovely OpEd piece today, which is exactly right:

It’s an absolute joke is what it is. They really want to buy into this “Reagan Coalition” BS, want to believe that Havana Ted inspires anything in Democrats other than laughter. They think that the people who responded well to St. Ron’s “Aw Shucks” act will be taken in by a guy who has made being an insufferable asshole into a paying gig.

I think that’s simplistic. The region has been en fuego for a long while, but Bush and Cheney did this country no favors in Iraq. Hussein was a complete asshole and a complete tyrant, but his country was secular and stable. The fact that that stability was maintained at gunpoint is a simple fact, but is the present situation better?

I think not.

I’m not defending him. I’m just pointing out that chaos is not a viable political option for world stability.

As for Jeb, I agree with Josh Marshall that he’s pretty much toast as of now. While the “moderates” in the GOP may be willing to sign onto the idea that the days of defending the Iraq War are past, the base is gonna hate him all the more for giving voice to their own doubts. The most telling bit is that nobody came out to defend the man, nobody wanted to be seen as standing close enough to him that they’d get hit by the shit when it inevitably hit the fan.

And if they won’t go to bat for him now, what are the odds that they’ll be out there to defend him when the debates begin and he further makes a fool of himself trying to find that sweet spot between centrism and batshit lunacy?

I hope someone does. I assume his in-laws and wife have no clue what he does or says online. A court case would drag all of it out into the light of day. Any lawyer worth his or her salt could build a convincing case against CCJ by combing his TL and blog for his history of libelous statements.

It’s in a perverse way a measure of his irrelevancy that no one *has* taken him to court (AFAIK). His outreach is so small, compared to sites like The Daily Caller or American Thinker, and his statements so ludicrous, that maybe some people figure it’s not worth bothering to sue.

Besides, they can’t get much money out of it if they win.

Leaving aside the idiocy of attacking Iraq because we were attacked by 18 Saudis and one Egyptian, under the orders of a Saudi fanatic:

If I was aware that the Iraqi nuclear program, such as it was, had been dead in the water for years, so was everyone in a position of responsibility. Biological Warfare is and has always been a bust. Japan’s Unit 731 killed hundreds of thousands of Chinese, but they had to do it the old fashioned way, poisoning wells and handing out infected blankets.

I guess what shocked me more than anything else was the disingenuous promotion of chemical weapons into “Weapons of Mass Destruction”, and the fact that nobody called them on it. I mean, I was going “WTF?” the whole time, but the media just passed it on without batting an eye.

I assume his in-laws and wife have no clue what he does or says online.

See, I no longer believe that’s possible for the following reasons:

1. #hotasianwife was with him when he went to the wrong fundraiser and was questioned by Capitol Police. It’s really hard to believe she would have had no curiosity about what the fuck he was up to after that.

2. #hotasianwife and in-laws actually work out in the world. Although in the big picture, upchuck is a nobody, can’t imagine that not one single person in the Fresno area has ever mentioned his online antics to any of them.

3. It’s rather obvious that upchuck has no regular gainful employment. I would think that #hotasianwife and in-laws have to at some point during their busy day question what the twit is doing all day.

4. As full of himself as upchuck is, I don’t believe he would let pass any opportunity to share his many media mentions, podcast interviews, etc. with the family.

Not blaming them for his antics, but I really have a hard time believing they don’t know.

Whatever initial appeal Walker had seems to have disappeared, oddly right along with his poll numbers in Wisconsin. And the Kochs seem to have cooled somewhat on his winning the nomination since he went on Glenn Beck’s show and started threatening their cash cows by suggesting we need to curb legal immigration. And like Havana Ted, he has virtually no crossover appeal to Democrats.

Maybe, but he could easily spin his antics as “journalism” and insist that his many critics are proof of the valuable work he does exposing … something.

You have to realize, too, that there’s a relatively small group of people who pay attention to CCJ, because we are politically minded and spend time on Twitter and the Internet. A much wider population don’t know and don’t care what happens on Twitter’s political TLs. I suspect his in-laws fall in the latter group.

Being taken to court and facing the possibility of their assets being attached in a legal settlement — now, that might wake them up.

I don’t see JEB’s mis-steps as fatal.

It won’t be hard for the Repubs to forgive him, as I suspect he will be eventually seen as “the anti-Hillary.”

Hillary will be the wedge issue, in addition to abortion, gun control, & SSMarriage, etc, in the Repub presidential run up.

JEB needs to publicly reconcile with Carl Rove, & W will facilitate that.

It may well be that Carl Rove also needs JEB’s campaign to restore some of Rove’s political luster.

JEB needs to quit making stupid campaigning mistakes & misstatements.

I thought he was more politically astute than that. Then again maybe he has hung out too close & too long with the S FL Republican Cuban Political mafia.

Meanwhile, Hillary is “returning to her roots.” I can’t really fault her, for what she currently is doing re her campaign.

And, I already have protection software, so I wanted to remove the Baidu program.

Not so easy. Windows Uninstall didn’t work. Trying to remove it from the Startup menu didn’t work. I couldn’t even halt the process using Process Explorer. The Baidu utility just didn’t want to go away.

So, today I booted off my Ubuntu USB stick and deleted the entire Baidu program folder. Take that, Baidu!

re: #67 teleskiguy

It was only a matter of time. His health was a slow decline over the years.

B.B. King played blues music in front of audiences damned near ‘til the day he died. He was a consummate bluesman. Another living link to the past no longer.

RIP B.B.

B.B. King was also a techno enthusiast.

With all the audio, video, recording, climate, lighting, and shade controls, his last tour bus, converted in 2009, had over 4 miles of cat-5 cabling.

Every seat, driver, buddy, front lounge, crew bunk & master lounge TV had access to HDMI Satellite TV, as well independent access to a 500 HDMI movie-on-board server. The master lounge had a digital recording studio.

And B.B., if he so chose, had central control of everything.

Naturally there was also a padded cabinet for Lucille.

B.B. wanted his bus, and his long time traveling musicians to have the same creature comforts he had at home.

(My tweet back then)
BB King performing at his club in Nashville. He may be 84, but still plays like the national treasure he is.
He has no desire to retire.

re: #36 The Very Reverend Battleaxe of Knowledge

It’s a weird year. There’s simply nobody who can be nominated, yet somebody will be. Something truly insane could happen—but I don’t know what….

I was saying pretty much the same thing this time 4 years ago. Sure, Romney was “the sane one”, but his campaign was every bit as feckless and pathetic as we’ve seen from ¡Heb! so far. But in the end that didn’t matter. The big money stayed with him, unlike all the individual crank billionaires with their individual hobby crank candidates.

If the money stays with Jeb, then it’ll be Jeb. If not, then it’s going to come down to an accident of timing. The lunatic merry-go-round will spin and spin and the loons will go up and down and it’ll just be whoever happens to be ahead when the music stops.

Have I mixed enough metaphors for 1 post?

This hateful ASSHAT fanatic is totally pandering to to the hateful ASSHAT fanatics on this side of the world. He’s speaking exactly their language, giving them crap they can quote to “prove” they’re right about ALL Muslims.

I can’t even begin to express how badly this pisses me off. I’m pissed at the haters and pissed at the damned fools who buy into their bullshit. Aaargh!

BTW, I’m not copying & pasting the exact text because I don’t want to do their PR for them by providing searchable keywords. The source article is at the BBC (I’m not helping them spread their message by tweeting that either).

The speaker they’re referring to is allegedly the leader:

Honor? Safety? Shade?? Give me a freaking break. I’m now 150% convinced that their plan is to “inspire”—*gag*—enough foolish or ignorant Muslims on this side of the world to do stupid, violent things, thus proving them and their helpers among the (supposedly) counter-jihad crowd correct. Then some idiot will attack Muslims here, and in no time flat the entire freaking world will be doing a tit-for-tat thing that makes the Israeli-Palestinian conflict look like a freaking walk in the park.

Gahhhhhhhhhhh!

84 Nyet  May 15, 2015 2:10:05am

To me it is clear that the words “knowing what we know now” simply did not register with Jeb in the first interview. It is clear from him saying that Hillary would have done the same - he knows that Hillary would not have done the same with what we know now, so he was describing the situation without the knowledge clause. He should have admitted he misunderstood the question and moved on. Meh.

BTW, while most people who “mattered” in the US politics, incl. the Clintons and Al Gore, believed in the Iraqi WMD, to my knowledge none of them called for war. Yes, Hillary voted for authorization, it was a mistake, and she also made a mistake of not admitting her mistake. That’s bad. But it still not the same thing as actually choosing war as President. Maybe she would have, maybe she wouldn’t have, we don’t know, neither does Jeb.

Oh, and believing in Iraqi WMDs was a reasoning mistake too, even with all the “unknown” lying. E.g. Powell’s speech was an obvious sham, he didn’t present any good evidence - and that on the assumption all of his evidence was not simply made up by the US. It was a bunch of speculations and indirect inferences. Since it was supposed to be the best evidence, I don’t think Hillary et al. had seen anything better, in the internal reports, so no, they have no excuse in believing it in the first place.

But Cheney Rumsfeld!

There are no “knowns.” There are things we know that we know. There are known unknowns. That is to say there are things that we now know we don’t know. But there are also unknown unknowns. There are things we do not know we don’t know.

Actually, that was Rumsfeld’s remarks and Q&A at a NATO presser 6/6/2002: nato.int

His signature was on that PNAC doc, also. The only significant signature missing was GWB’s.

Fourteen years can screw with your memory, esp when you’re trying to put some things behind you. I would have been content w/o a computer at that time if not for the Iraq invasion. Now I depend on it.

I don’t. He’s trying to score political points both ways, and doing poorly.

JB is trying to present himself as the “kinder, gentler” brother, someone who was duped , but he’s as much of a warmonger as the others.

So, he’s caught in a dilemma of his own making.

Why? They’ve been killing Muslims non-stop since they got started.

Extremists like them tend to be takfiris—i.e. they don’t consider those they’re killing to be Real Muslims™ (like themselves). The 1st and 3rd paragraphs I quoted in my #83 spell it out quite clearly: There’s no acceptable excuse (in their minds) for any Muslim not to join them, therefore any Muslim who refuses remains outside of their “shade” and is no better than all the other kuffar. As such, they shouldn’t expect any safety or rights.

I just came from a rock concert on campus. It was a cover band, but really quite good. Drummer, two guitars, bass and a female singer with a killer voice — all third-year students, so it was kind of their farewell concert. Next academic year, they’ll be doing internships and shit, so mustering the band will be a lot harder.

They did Mandarin, Cantonese and English songs. The singer handled all of them really well.

And the artist claiming they were illustrations. Wrong, they were photo manipulations that took no time at all.

By the way, did you all know there is a new day in Washington with members of both parties working in cooperative ways that haven’t been seen in years?

Yep! I just heard it in a radio commercial for Rob (I know it is hard to remember I am one of your Ohio senators) Portman commercial.

And after that stretch of a claim, it ends by saying call him and help him support things like the replacing the ACA with smarter medical legislation blah, blah, blah.

I was looking to see if I could find a ‘net version to share with everyone, but haven’t. Portman is such a toast on warm milk kind of guy. Ugh. I hope previous Ohio Governor Strickland can take him out in 2016.

Well, we had expected that Britain would just sit back and let us march all over Belgium, burning down villages and slaughtering civilians, on our way to France, where we could burn down villages and slaughter civilians. Imagine our surprise when Britain objected to our clever plan and allied with France! We were dumbfounded. By that time, of course, it was too late to go home.

Rep. Mica (GOP) was slamming Amtrak for being a 3d world system, run like a Soviet system.

That’s just days after the GOP slashed funding to Amtrak by $250 million, money that could go to fully implement PTC (among other things).

The GOP has been starving Amtrak of funds needed to maintain its ROW, let alone upgrade critical components, like bridges, tunnels, power systems, and rail alignments to allow for high speed rail and eliminate grade crossings or other needs that would improve service and reliability.

It exactly parallels the aviation world, where Boeing or Airbus will offer a liaison to an investigation team when a plane goes in anywhere in the world. You can read it as CYA or proactive response, but the NTSB is very good at controlling it.

Now, I am on the other end of the spectrum and when I hear a guy doing the thousand notes all I can say is, well, that’s nice, but can you actually play something that has some melody, dynamics and feel.

A Hamilton, Montana man is behind bars after shooting his bartender early Saturday morning. 59-year old Monte Hanson had ordered a “red beer,” beer with tomato juice, but when he learned he had been served Clamato, a tomato and clam juice mixture, he was furious.

After the bar closed, Hanson reportedly went to the home of Joe Lewis, the 29-year old bartender. Hanson says it’s against his religious beliefs - he is Jewish - to drink Clamato, so he allegedly shot Lewis.

I saw a statistic the other day, from 2010, that only 10% of American married-couple families have a woman who stays at home full time and a man who works out of the home full time. Anyone who suggests otherwise is simply speaking a dope.

You’re not seeing things from the MRA perspective. In their fantasy world, the reason for such a situation is that all the women are out there, competing with men for the same well-paying jobs. If all the women just stayed home to take care of the home or devoted themselves solely to finding a sugar daddy, then men would have loads more jobs to choose from and single-worker households would be the majority again.

That holds true even in my solidly middle class, mostly white community. I volunteered as a crossing guard at our local Elementary school and the number of stay at home moms was vanishingly small.

Two-earner families have been the norm since the 1960s, I think. If Mr and Mrs X want a nice house, two cars and money for a tidy suburban lifestyle, both of them have to work. It’s economics 101.

Their logic (and I use the term loosely) is that businesses only hire women because they’re cheaper than men, doing the same job a man could do for less and thus driving down wages. But if women left the workforce and went back to being homemakers, employers would be forced to hire men to do those jobs, raising wages overall because men doing more demanding work would demand higher wages.

Bear in mind that the morons making this argument are usually the same ones who respond to calls for a living wage with “They’ll just replace you with a robot!!!”

I think my mother did it in the 70s partially for that and partially for wanting to work in something in order to apply her education. Once the youngest child (me) hit about age 7 my mother was doing summer classes to work on a masters degree, and then eventually working as a librarian in an elementary school.

And thinking about it I think just about all our neighbors in our middle-class area were two-earner families (or 1.5) with the exceptions being for medical reasons.

It’s just *normal* for mom and dad to work now. Been that way for decades. Even among my friends who are professionals (in the States AND in China), both partners work outside the home. They don’t have to. Each one makes enough that they could live comfortably, but if they want to keep up with the Joneses (McMansion, swanky cars, exotic vacays, etc.) that single income is just not enough. Add a college-age child or two, then two incomes is absolutely necessary.

Trying to turn back the clock to the fantasy days of stay-at-home Moms is futile. But isn’t everything lately an attempt to turn back the clock to some halcyon era when white men of means were the top dogs and everyone else were lowly curs?

BTW, got a real winner re: Amtrak, funding, and that the GOP is slashing and burning its funding for infrastructure on Twitter.

He doesn’t like funding stuff on other side of country if he’s not using it. Mind you, NY, NJ, and CT send billions more to the feds than they get in return, so if we want to play that game, his state would probably be out of luck.

And if you want to play by usage, then most roads don’t make money and aren’t sufficiently funded by users, so we should limit their funding to only those that turn a profit (which would still be urban areas, many interstates, and leave the locals to their own devices).

Well written. Well acted (especially Charlize Theron, who’s created the greatest ass-kicker since Linda Hamilton in T2 - and she owned this film), stuntwork that puts pretty much every recent action film in the shade and stunning editing and cinematography. Aside from the anarchic action scenes, there are some genuinely emotionally resonant moments in the film.

The schoolbook took great pains to point out that the southern states had every right to secede from the Union and only attempted to leave in order to “keep their rights.”

According to the textbook, ravaged post-war Alabama relied upon the Ku Klux Klan — filled with “The loyal white men of Alabama” — to help reestablish order after the state was inundated with outside-agitating “carpetbaggers.”

“They (the Klan) held their courts in the dark forests at night; they passed sentence on the criminals and they carried out the sentence. Sometimes the sentence would be to leave the state. After a while the Klan struck fear in the hearts of the “carpetbaggers” and other lawless men who had taken control of the state…. The Negroes who had been fooled by the false promises of the “carpetbaggers” decided to get themselves jobs and settle down to make an honest living.

This, in turn, was appreciated by the recently freed slaves:

Democrats can’t make one misstep before they’re absolutely ravaged— and not just by right wingers like Schweizer. What you might think is an insignificant omission becomes the end of the world while the right wing can do no wrong whatsoever. GS should have known better.

I don’t watch Stephanopoulous, but these ghouls won’t be finished with him until his career at ABC is toast and Clinton smeared so badly she won’t survive into a primary. And ABC knew who he was before they even hired him.

Maybe a better idea is for media outlets not to hire anyone involved in politics? Faux News, take notice.

2 Trains Hit by Projectiles Minutes Before Amtrak Derailment t.co
— Jeff Berard (@jaberard) May 15, 2015

A projectile hit a SEPTA train minutes before an Amtrak train derailed in Philadelphia Tuesday night, SEPTA spokeswoman Jerri Williams confirmed. Williams said investigators do not believe the SEPTA incident is related in any way to the derailment.

The projectile hit and busted the engineer’s window on a northbound SEPTA train that was headed to Trenton on tracks that run along the Amtrak rails, according to The Philadelphia Inquirer. About 80 passengers were put on buses to continue their trip.

Less than five minutes later and approximately four miles away Amtrak train 188 shuddered and went off the tracks at the Frankford Junction in Northeast Philadelphia, killing at least 7 people and injuring more than 200.

Wow. If foul play is not involved, that is one amazing coincidence.

Dumber than a bag of hammers:

Cheaper to buy plane tickets than to provide the appropriate amount of funding for Amtrak? Seriously? And ignore that government subsidizes road and air infrastructure too? You know, to keep planes from crashing into each other, to land/take off from airports (that have to be maintained and upgraded, etc.) and roads that have to be maintained.

The GOP would rather run all of it into the ground and defer paying on the whole kit and caboodle (if ever).

Young “Blues Boy” King, 1956. Yeah, I used to boogie to this. Rhythm and Blues was just about all I listened to as a teen; my musical tastes were definitely not “white bread” at all. I can’t even repeat what my dad said when I listened to the radio, but it was racist as hell when he caught me. Only Black stations played the music I loved back then.

[Embedded content]

Living in central Florida in the late 1950’s and 1960’s we listened to “John R” out of 50,000 Watt WLAC in Nashville, TN.

As you may know, John R - like Hoss Allen - were white men who sounded black, and broadcast over the clear channel Life and Casualty Insurance owned radio station.

Here’s John R ending an interview with Percy Sledge and then selling baby chicks.

Chips Moman named his publishing company, “Baby Chicks” because of this commercial.

John R was a nice guy.

I forget the name of the station I listened to in Miami, but remember very well WGIV in Charlotte where I spent some of my teens. Genial Gene, Chattie Hattie and Rockin’ Ray were all Black personalities although the station was owned by a white man. This is the way it was then. en.wikipedia.org
