Charles Johnson is not Charles C Johnson and the Lizard Squad is not necessarily affiliated with Little Green Footballs.

The guy running things is free to correct me, of course.

8 Justanotherhuman  May 15, 2015 5:49:23pm

This is what’s going to happen: The good/bad guys go after the bad/good guys, and vice versa.

Sounds reasonable since they’re usually the only ones carrying.

OT, but an interesting example of you can’t make this stuff up:

nationalreview.com

Here we have an NRO contributor arguing that the GOP presidential candidates are being cowardly opportunists in their responses to the ‘would you have started the Iraq war knowing what we now know?’ question.

One’s enthusiasm for war must truly know no bounds if one is going to assert that starting that disaster was the right thing to do, even after conceding the point that there was no WMD threat.

Well, I don’t think he’s actually tried to set it up, but I do believe (based on reading true crime books ;) that what he tweeted is considered solicitation—offering a monetary reward for committing murder.

He doesn’t just say he wishes somebody would do it; he says he’ll pay for it (or, rather, he’ll try to get other people to pay for it, because that’s the way he rolls.)

Just now checked my Google Alerts and it looks like while we were all distracted by Tsarnayev, another terrorist got sentenced to life in NYC today:

Preet Bharara, the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, and John P. Carlin, Assistant Attorney General for National Security, announced today that KHALID AL FAWWAZ was sentenced to life in prison for multiple terrorism offenses relating to his participation in Al Qaeda’s conspiracy to kill Americans. U.S. District Judge Lewis A. Kaplan imposed sentence on FAWWAZ, 52, a citizen of Saudi Arabia, in Manhattan federal court, at a proceeding attended by victims of the 1998 bombings of the U.S. embassies in Nairobi, Kenya, and Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. FAWWAZ’s sentencing follows a six-week jury trial in January and February of this year, at which FAWWAZ was convicted of all four counts in which he was charged. […]

The funny thing about “veritas” in Twitter handles and bios is it’s basically a tacit nod to Colbert’s concept of Truthiness. It’s just an extension of the whole “We report, you decide” Foxification of right wing news media. They treat the concept of truth like it’s something one can effectively claim simply by verbally peeing upon. The entire idea of past performance and reputation, of how many times one has been caught actually peddling abject nonsense, deceptively edited bullshit and outright hoaxes magically becomes irrelevant if they’ve oh so cleverly encoded “truth” into their brand identity.

When his tweets show up in my TL I generally respond with my usual disdain for him. But I don’t (at this point in time) actively follow him. Same goes for Bryan Fisher when he shows up. Do they see my tweets? Probably not. But those who follow me do. Therefore I am on record opposing them and their ideals.

I don’t know if the whole modern right wing use of the term originated with James O’Keefe’s Project Veritas, but it wouldn’t surprise me. However it’s clear he was using the term in a smarmy defensive kind of way, fully aware of his reputation for deceptive editing and ultra shady bullshit.

And that’s what it’s come to mean in this context, overt propaganda.

I have a couple of people in my Facebook that don’t know they’re being politically contradictory. I’ll see posts by these folks of how Obama is the worst ever, followed by Stop Fracking and Raise The Minimum Wage! I see it all the time. I don’t engage these folks, they’re obviously ill-informed. It’s pretty annoying, though, to see these folks act like dyed-in-the-wool conservatives then the next minute they’re sooo progressive.

UpChuck’s been tweeting his race-IQ fetish tonight, including re-tweeting some stats about SAT scores. I got curious, so I went to the College Board site to get reliable stats. These are the results for the 2014 test-takers.

Totaling up scores for Asians, African-Americans and whites gives the following:
Asian 1651
AA 1278
White 1576

Also note that Asians’ math scores (598) are highest of the three groups extracted, but their verbal and writing scores are not substantially different from white students’.

Chuck and the scientific racists he follows argue that these results are “proof” that African-Americans are less intelligent than whites and Asians. But if you look at the individual components, the difference between AA’s and whites is only about 100. Meanwhile, the standard deviations for each component is around 100. In other words, the “bell curves” for whites and for Asians overlap the bell curve for the African-Americans. If race — a cultural not a genetic construct — had anything to do with SAT scores, one would expect a wider separation than 100 points and less overlap among the self-declared ethnicities.

What the results mean, of course, is that whites and Asians are *somewhat* better at taking the SAT, not significantly better. And the difference between Asians and whites is basically negligible.

So, Chuck and his followers are full of shit.

I read that piece and it’s bit more complex than that. David French thinks that the answer should be “I’d have gone after Saddam Hussein, but I’d have done it differently and smarter.” He sees the media’s asking the question as intended to whip up anti-Republican sentiments while forcing current GOP candidates to disavow George W. Bush.

My own thought is that while I think French has a good argument I don’t agree with it. The nature of the modern media is such that anyone who said, “I’d have gone after Saddam, but I would have done it smarter.” will see all of the words after ‘Saddam’ cut in the minds of many people and Democrats can be counted on to reinforce that view. Doe’s matter how well the candidate phrases his reply, if the core of the answer is anything but “No, I wouldn’t have gone in.” what many people will hear is “I’m a warmonger.” Under those circumstances, George W. Bush and Operation: IRAQI FREEDOM need to be thrown under the bus.Any other tactic is just going to result in a media drubbing.

“I think that if you are directing a film, man or woman, there is pressure and if you don’t do a good job, the results are the same — you’re not gonna get to do it again, or maybe you will,” Dash said…

Well, that’s definitive—you’re not gonna get to do it again, OR maybe you will. Alrightly then.

I know hundreds of thousands of actresses who would love to play the leading lady to a Leonardo DiCaprio, a Matt Damon, you know, a George Clooney.

Stacey, dear, I doubt you can count to 100,000, let alone know that many actresses.

or—take it away, Harris:

“How many female exec— I mean you’ve got Oprah Winfrey,” Faulkner said, “you know I mentioned Ava with ‘Selma’ who directed that, you’ve got Oprah Winfrey. You’ve got a lot of people who are opening doors for other women in the business, too. You know, Tyler Perry is another.

So, you have Oprah, and Oprah again, and that Ava from Selma, and Tyler Perry, who is not a woman—so is that 2? Or 3? Or 4?

Any person eligible to vote could receive a letter that reads, “On this date you will report to this prison by this time where you will execute this person.”

The bullet is because it’s messy and personal so people can’t kid themselves about what they’ve done.

Conscription is so that people have to do their own killing. No hiding behind other people.

Also, fails for another reason. Galileo did original research, took careful notes and shared his findings for others to inspect and debate. Murray is a second-hand researcher, using others’ original (and not-original) research and drawing flawed conclusions from them.

It took less than 100 years for Galileo’s work to be conclusively proved correct. The IQ=intelligence/race debate has continued for decades with no conclusive results at all.

The nature of the modern media is such that anyone who said, “I’d have gone after Saddam, but I would have done it smarter.” will see all of the words after ‘Saddam’ cut in the minds of many people and Democrats can be counted on to reinforce that view.

This kind of dodges the question of “why go after Saddam?” The Bush Administration did a very good job of deliberately fostering the false notion that Saddam was behind 9/11.

A poll reported in The Washington Post in September 2003 found that nearly 70 percent of respondents believed Saddam Hussein was probably personally involved in the attacks.[19]

Cheney especially worked hard to spread this deceptive propaganda.

Vice President Dick Cheney had told Meet the Press on December 9, 2001, that Iraq was harboring Abdul Rahman Yasin, a suspect in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing,[14] and repeated the statement in another appearance on September 14, 2003, saying “We learned more and more that there was a relationship between Iraq and al-Qaida that stretched back through most of the decade of the ’90s, that it involved training, for example, on BW and CW, that al-Qaida sent personnel to Baghdad to get trained on the systems that are involved. The Iraqis providing bomb-making expertise and advice to the al-Qaida organization. We know, for example, in connection with the original World Trade Center bombing in ‘93 that one of the bombers was Iraqi, returned to Iraq after the attack of ‘93. And we’ve learned subsequent to that, since we went into Baghdad and got into the intelligence files, that this individual probably also received financing from the Iraqi government as well as safe haven.”[15] and once again in an interview with National Public Radio in January, 2004, stating that there was “overwhelming evidence” of a relationship between Saddam and al-Qaeda based on evidence including Iraq’s purported harboring of Yasin.[16]

In the same Meet the Press interviews, Cheney implied a connection between Iraq and Mohamed Atta; “The Czech interior minister said today that an Iraqi intelligence officer met with Mohammed Atta, one of the ringleaders of the September 11 terrorists attacks on the United States, just five months before the synchronized hijackings and mass killings were carried out.”[14] and “With respect to 9/11, of course, we’ve had the story that’s been public out there. The Czechs alleged that Mohamed Atta, the lead attacker, met in Prague with a senior Iraqi intelligence official five months before the attack, but we’ve never been able to develop any more of that yet either in terms of confirming it or discrediting it. We just don’t know.”[15] Czech officials have since backed off of this claim, and even Cheney has since acknowledged that the notion “that the meeting ever took place” has been “pretty well knocked down now.”[17] (See Mohamed Atta’s alleged Prague connection.)

Absent that and the cooked WMD rationale there was precious little in the way of compelling arguments to be made. There’s a reason that for modern Republicans dealing with this issue is like trying to sail between Scylla and Charybdis. They either wholly reject Bush’s foreign policy on Iraq and dash their hopes with the far right hawks who are the most reliable primary voters the GOP has, or they embrace it and effectively repulse the rest of the electorate during the general election.

No, not so much. But I don’t think Murray’s an violent-minded bigot like CJC and I don’t think he wrote The Bell Curve intending to appeal to that sort of person. I see Murray as simply being badly wrong in that book, not as being deliberately evil. Thus I don’t think he deserves to be associated with CJC. That’s not saying I support a person, its just saying that they are not so extraordinarily bad as to be deserving of association with Charles C. Johnson.

What it really reflects is the savage inequality between urban and suburban schools. I would love to see a breakdown of those scores by family income.

Whites, blacks, and hispanics would drop like rocks based on that filter.

Anecdote as a white guy who grew up low middle class (reduced or free lunches through school) about SAT scores. I graduated 4th out of 455, so not too bad. Took my SAT in high school, and on the English portion, I got a 540, so a little above average (I’m really good at math, so it’s not relevant to this story).

17 years after my first attempt at college (navy and real life in between) I finally get my bachelors and go to take the GRE. I now have the money to help prepare for it. While you can’t compare the SAT and GRE completely, they use the same range, and my English score jumps 150 points.

One of the single biggest things I learned when preparing for the GRE was how to properly do analogies between words (the door:ajar as mirror:pickle questions). If I’d known how to do that properly in High School, the English would have been so much better.

And it’s not necessarily that the wealthier kids pay for prep, though a lot of them do. I was the first in my family on either side to go to college. Not having college people around limits what you know to even prepare for college. It’s also the reason so many poor people fail to finish even when they have most of college paid for, like I did: You don’t know how you are supposed to handle setbacks and rough patches.

Now, throw in society actively pushing for you to fail.

Edit: 455 classmates, not 255.

Let us please hope for peace and solace to their families and understand that they were doing the type of work that is the best that humans can be. They died for us, displaying our better angels.

So sad.

With whom do the Marines have a bad reputation? i know of very few people who do not hold them in high regard.

Comparing Charles Murray to Galileo doesn’t work, if for no other reason than that Murray wasn’t put under house arrest for The Bell Curve. That isn’t a slam on Murray, who is fortunate enough to live under the protection of the 1st Amendment, but it does meann Galileo faced risks and costs that Murray has never had to face.

I also doubt that Charles Murray is happy having UpChuck as a fan. He’s the ultimate Toxic Fanboy.

re: #174 Dark_Falcon

No, not so much. But I don’t think Murray’s an violent-minded bigot like CJC and I don’t think he wrote The Bell Curve intending to appeal to that sort of person. I see Murray as simply being badly wrong in that book, not as being deliberately evil. Thus I don’t think he deserves to be associated with CJC. That’s not saying I support a person, its just saying that they are not so extraordinarily bad as to be deserving of association with Charles C. Johnson.

Murray is to Chuck as Robert Spencer is to Pamela Geller. The fact is he deliberately provides the patina of academic respectability for more overt racists to cite in their arguments. In many ways that makes him more despicable, because he’s effectively mercenary about his racism.

Speaking of the death penalty, another thing which exposes what it is all about for many proponents of it is when you present them with a mode of execution which is quick and painless.

A pure nitrogen (N2) atmosphere will kill within seconds, and at most, the condemned person might feel euphoria. Then it’s all over. A BBC documentary team presented some US death penalty proponents with the method. It’s cheap, reliable, fast. Not one thought it was a good idea.

Don’t believe me? Check out the BBC Horizon episode “How to kill a Human Being.”

As to my personal opinion on the matter? I oppose it for “ordinary” crimes, “ordinary” in the sense that they aren’t crimes against humanity or human rights, and even then, not for the minions but only for the chief instigators and facilitators, or in the case (which I hope never occurs) where a crime succeeds (e.g. a successful genocide) or comes pretty damn close to doing so.

Yo Harriet Tubman I’m really happy for you. I’mma let you finish but everyone knows that Mary Fields was the most badass historical black lady of ALL TIME.

The Native Americans called Fields “White Crow” because “she acts like a white woman but has black skin.” Local whites did not know what to make of her. One schoolgirl wrote an essay saying: “she drinks whiskey, and she swears, and she is a republican, which makes her a low, foul creature.” In 1894, after several complaints and an incident with a disgruntled male subordinate that involved gunplay,[6] the bishop ordered her to leave the convent.[2]

Mother Amadeus helped her open a restaurant in nearby Cascade. Fields would serve food to anyone, whether they could pay or not, and the restaurant went broke in about ten months.[2]

In 1895, although approximately 60 years old, Fields was hired as a mail carrier because she was the fastest applicant to hitch a team of six horses.[3] This made her the second woman and first African American woman to work for the U.S. Postal Service. She drove the route with horses and a mule named Moses. She never missed a day, and her reliability earned her the nickname “Stagecoach.”[3][4] If the snow was too deep for her horses, Fields delivered the mail on snowshoes, carrying the sacks on her shoulders.[2]

I will add that it has been a very long time since an action movie kept me so engaged with its big set pieces. Edge of my seat. Usually I’m bored to tears by the fight scenes.

Slight spoiler:

Miller does a great job of creating characters that have visual distinctiveness and fast characterization, so that it really is a jab in the guts when they die. And he’s not scared of really letting his heroes get their asses kicked.

For that matter, the whole movie works because Max is the only constant: every other character could die pretty much at any moment.

NB to others: spoiler box contains actual plot elements.

Fury Road made me think about how little you feel the stakes in other action films: there’s a few boilerplate ways people die. Heroic sacrifice or killed to act as motivation for the hero? It’s trite. Like when Ben dies on Daredevil (which I otherwise enjoyed): you could feel it coming episodes away. There’s even a difference between “anyone can die…at a thematically appropriate time” and “anyone can die, because there’s real chaos and confusion.”

The latter makes the stakes seem real, and all the little gambits that the characters engage in fraught. Haven’t felt that kind of tension over what happens next in years.

Exactly. Sometimes a bomb is either too unstable or has a too-effective anti-disturbance device to make disarming it practical. In those cases, the bomb has to be blown up in place.

278 Justanotherhuman  May 16, 2015 5:31:27am

I’d almost bet these propagandized young people haven’t actually thought through what ISIS stands for—death and destruction of any established order, no matter where they can get a foot-hold, and imposition of ISIS’s own brand of authoritarianism. Since it appears that many don’t carry identity cards of any kind, or forged ones, it’s pretty easy to pass oneself off as another, more important, player as well.

It certainly isn’t the kind of idealized, romantic notion of “revolution” most young people dream about and discard when reality sets in.

Army arrests ‘ISIS commander’ in east Lebanon: state media

dailystar.com.lb

(snip)

LBCI and other Lebanese media later identified the man as Abdel-Rahman al-Bezerbashi, 21, an ISIS member who goes by the nickname “Baghdadi’s grandson.”

They said Bezerbashi is a Lebanese national from the northern city of Tripoli, and that he had participated in attacks on the Army in both Tripoli and Arsal.

However, a security source told The Daily Star that Bezerbashi has been in custody for two months, and that he was not the same person arrested Saturday. More

Then hate spews at Obama (as opposed to legitimate criticism) will move to “He’s helping Iran’s proxies consolidate in Syria! Once they win they’ll ATTACK ISRAEL AND HE DOESN”T CARE!!1”

Remember the first rule about those hate spews: Barack Obama is wrong and evil. The people who spew will alter their policy DERPs as needed to avoid being aligned with Obama. Except on the current trade bill, but that’s mostly because the US Chamber of Commerce, the Club For Growth, and Americans For Prosperity have made it clear that if what Bill Maher has called “Blacktracking” were to derail the Partnership of the Pacific, then there will be Hell To Pay.

I certainly don’t think of them as being “reformists” but as radical religious fascists, much as I see the religious right wing in the US, who, if it came down to their real goal, would not hesitate to impose their will on the rest of us with disastrous results for the majority of people.

Yesterday I was on the phone with a local woman who is in California who wanted to know whether she could ship her trike to my shop and have me assemble it for her, and what would be the price. I told her the price for assembling a shipped bike, and said a trike might be a bit more, I don’t know as I have not assembled one before. She said its book would be with it and has assembly instructions. We chatted about local news. She had heard about the doctor who had been hit by a car, but she had not heard about my accident. I told her I was in recovery, and I work very slowly. She asked whether I charge less to compensate for taking longer. I should have hung up on her, but I said, ‘If I use an hourly rate, and it takes me twice as long, it should cost twice as much.’ (I have set rates for most jobs, and I don’t have an hourly rate.) I hope she ends up at the other bike shop.

Maybe it’s obvious, but even a small rock thrown directly at an approaching passenger train going at 50 mph can cause significant damage. Someone with a good throwing arm might throw the rock at 50 mph, so that’s a 100-mph impact — relative velocities, and all that.

My guess — and it’s only a guess — is the projectile penetrated the windshield, hit the engineer in the head hard enough to disorient him. He slumped over or hit the the throttle control accidentally, accelerating the train. Coming to his senses, he hit the emergency brakes, but it was too late.

Bostian said he has no recollection after leaving the NE station, so a hit could have occurred almost after the train left, picking up speed. If he blacked out and fell on the throttle, it would have picked up excess speed almost immediately. He recovered to pull the brake, but it was too late at the speed the train was going. Unfortunately, I can’t find the distance between the 30th St station and that curve in an industrial area.

Anyone else know?

He reported to NTSB as not being sick or fatigued on the return trip, which was the normal trip for him 5 days a week.

Novaya Gazeta said its prize-winning reporter Yelena Milashina left the region Thursday. Earlier, Milashina said she was warned by police that she must take precautions.

Milashina reported that a 57-year old Chechen police officer who was already married was planning to take a second wife, a 17-year-old girl, and issued threats to the girl and her family to force them to comply. Milashina said she was doing more research when she received the police warning.

Chechnya’s Moscow-backed strongman, Ramzan Kadyrov, denied that the police officer was putting pressure on the girl or her family. Kadyrov, who has Chechnya under tight control, has President Vladimir Putin’s support.

re: #331 wheat-dogghazi-mailgate

Maybe it’s obvious, but even a small rock thrown directly at an approaching passenger train going at 50 mph can cause significant damage. Someone with a good throwing arm might throw the rock at 50 mph, so that’s a 100-mph impact — relative velocities, and all that.

My guess — and it’s only a guess — is the projectile penetrated the windshield, hit the engineer in the head hard enough to disorient him. He slumped over or hit the the throttle control accidentally, accelerating the train. Coming to his senses, he hit the emergency brakes, but it was too late.

The only problem with that scenario is that those trains are outfitted with what is essentially bullet-proof glass. I don’t think a ‘good throwing arm’ would be enough to throw a rock through one of those windows.

What would make more sense would be a larger rock, dropped off an overpass. That would no doubt do the necessary damage to bust up the windshield the way it was.

Even then, the relative velocity would be pretty high. Assuming the overpass is 20 10 meters high, a rock would be going about 20 mph by the time it reached the train. CORRECTED to be more reasonable.

From Wikipedia :
By May 13, the train’s event recorder had been recovered and was being analyzed at the NTSB’s operations center.[31][32] The NTSB determined, based on footage from the front-facing camera on the train, that the train was accelerating when it reached the curve where it derailed. A representative of the NTSB stated that 65 seconds before the crash the train was traveling at 60 mph (97 km/h), 16 seconds before the crash it reached 90 mph (140 km/h), and it eventually reached speeds in excess of 106 mph (171 km/h), at which point the engineer-induced braking system was activated.[33]

If the train were going 60 mph when this hypothetical rock hit the windshield, the magnitude of the resultant velocity would have been around 63 mph.

The kinetic energy in any event would be pretty high. The rock might have hit hard enough to send shattered glass inward, even if the rock didn’t penetrate the windshield.

If the train were going 60 mph when this hypothetical rock hit the windshield, the magnitude of the resultant velocity would have been around 70 mph. It might have hit hard enough to send shattered glass inward, even if the rock didn’t penetrate the windshield.

But if were just glass shards in the engineer’s cabin, that would put a hole in the theory that the rock struck Bostian in the head and momentarily knocked him out.

I’m just playing devil’s advocate here. I actually do think something striking the windshield had a lot to do with the train crashing. But the details don’t hang together.

Guess we’ll have to wait for the report.

I saw the mention of Blue Bell ice creams and their listeria issues. I don’t know if it has been mentioned, but a Columbus company had similar issues. Here is a link to an article about it.

Jeni’s ice cream set to reopen after listeria scare

NASHVILLE — Artisan ice cream maker Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams plans to reopen its scoop shops next week after a listeria scare that cost the Ohio company millions of dollars.

The stores will have a grand reopening at 7 p.m. on May 22, according to an update posted Thursday on the company’s website.

Jeni’s has 21 stores in Ohio, Illinois, Tennessee, Georgia, South Carolina and California. The company also distributes its ice cream through grocery stores and other retailers in some states.

Jeni’s stopped producing ice cream and closed its stores on April 23 after listeria was discovered in a pint of ice cream in a sample randomly collected by the Nebraska Department of Agriculture.

—CUT—

I have never had any Jeni’s as I stay away from ice cream. I understand it is very good. She originally started with one small shop in the Columbus North Market a great place to get really good foodstuffs in an open market atmosphere.

Here is her history. Kinda sad this happened. But it did.

It might have been possible that Bostian got hit with glass shards and jerked to avoid them, then hitting his head and being dazed.

But we don’t even know where the head injury was (forehead, side/back of skull, etc.).

I just ran through a list of the articles on the derailment story and one of the articles names the Port Richmond neighborhood. For those who are not familiar with Philly, the Port Richmond neighborhood can be quite dangerous.

I got a feel for that when I saw images/videos of the area. I noticed it looked like a depressed old manufacturing area with a lot of neglect and all that comes with it, like the ‘tagging’ (graffiti) all over everything.

Just my $.02 on the Amtrak issue…

What if the engineer got sprayed with glass, instinctively reacts to it and is temporarilly distracted? Also, can he have — for some reason — mistaken the acceleration and braking levers in that sort of scenario?

Another thought which has occured to me is that braking a train does put load on the track, especially if emergency braking. A weak, poorly maintaned, spot might crack from the strain, and track breaks are known causes of derailings.

Yeah, my rock to the head hypothesis seems unlikely, but I wonder if the inside of the glass shattered, sending pieces toward his head.

From the Wikipedia summary of events, the train was traveling around 60 mph about a minute before the accident, toward the sharp curve. About 50 seconds later, it was doing 90 mph. Unless he were a complete idiot, Bostian would not be accelerating toward that nearly 90-degree bend. This is his regular run, so I can’t believe he’d deliberately accelerate toward a bend with a 50-mph limit. Something hinky happened in that 50 second interval.

Not at this time. It all is still being investigated. Sure does make you wonder though. There also has been no mention or speculation any other object in the accident caused the damage to the front windscreen. A thing to remember here is that a projectile does not have to penetrate a vehicle in order cause problems for the crew. Even if the projectile never makes it through the hull, armor, window, etc, the force of the impact can cause fragments of the part struck to spall off into the vehicle interior.

Normally, the stuff I learn about tanks and how to kill them doesn’t have non-military application. But today it does.

Exactly the scenario I was suggesting, those fine, sharp needle-like or sand-like fragments which tend to spray from the inside of a hardened sheet of glass given sufficient impact.

re: #395 Dark_Falcon

A thing to remember here is that a projectile does not have to penetrate a vehicle in order cause problems for the crew. Even if the projectile never makes it through the hull, armor, window, etc, the force of the impact can cause fragments of the part struck to spall off into the vehicle interior.

Normally, the stuff I learn about tanks and how to kill them doesn’t have non-military application. But today it does.

Plus something suddenly going CRACK! next to your head usually makes a person flinch or duck. That involuntary movement might also include pushing the throttle.

Just speculation at this point. The public at large has little actual evidence.

For those who play computer RPGs, what are your top 3-5 games?

For me?

1. Borderlands 2. Hilarious Mad Max homage
2. Jade Empire. This one is like being in your own wuxia movie.
3. X3 Terran Conflict. This might be called a space sim but it’s first person and there’s a lot of missions to do. Or you can just be a pirate, bounty hunter, mercenary, space trucker or capitalist pig.
4. WOW. I play solo (save for when I team up with my wife) so it’s pretty much a solo RPG.
5. Very old but I still remember System Shock with fondness.

Um, no. Congress is giving Amtrak all the money it requested for rail safety programs and the House Transportation Committee has scheduled a hearing on this derailment. If the NTSB is calling for safety improvements, then there’s a good chance the money will be found. But it must be noted that such funds would be an additional request, and not the restoration of funds cut by Congress.

Passenger aboard Amtrak Acela traveling southbound near Philadelphia at time of Train 188 derailment says his train was hit by object that smashed glass - @NBCNews

nbcnews.com

A passenger traveling along the same route the night that Amtrak Train 188 derailed in Philadelphia told NBC News that an object hit his train, shattering the window.

The account from Johns Hopkins student Justin Landis makes him the third person to report a projectile hitting a train Tuesday night in that same area, and comes a day after the National Transportation Safety Board said investigators were working to determine whether something struck the doomed Amtrak train before it derailed. Eight people were killed in the accident.

Landis was traveling on southbound Amtrak Acela 2173 and nearing the Philadelphia 30th Street Station around 9:20 p.m. when he was jolted by the sound of an object hitting and shattering the window of his train car. The passenger sitting next to Landis told him he had seen a rock. More

If it’s proved that a projectile hit the windshield of #188 resulting in injury and unconsciousness of the engineer, those 8 deaths could rise to the level of homicide on the part of the vandals who no doubt were the underlying first cause of the crash.

At this point, regardless of why the train derailed, I feel confident in saying that there are some rock-throwing ‘youts’ in serious need of some face-time with the Philadelphia PD, followed by trial and appropriate correction in their ways.

Note: ‘Face-time’ in this context means arrest and interrogation. It should not be read to mean ‘police brutality’.

If there are arrrests, the FBI will take control of anyone found, not the Phila PD. This would rise to the leve of a Federal crime.

How much money have Republicans cut? From what areas of Amtrak’s funding requests have those funds been cut? Start with those two questions, and we’ll try to work through this.

Rep John Mica (R-FL) calls Amtrak a “soviet style operation”. Idiot. This is why so many loathe your party.

“Republicans have long looked to Amtrak as a focus of its efforts to cut domestic spending broadly, and many see cutting funding for the train system as a bid to privatize it. On Wednesday, less than 24 hours after the New York-bound train crashed, the Republican-led House Appropriations Committee voted to reduce grants to Amtrak by $252 million — a drop of about 15% from last year’s level.”

Despite the Amtrak crash, trains are still an incredibly safe way to travel

Do remember that is from the capital expenditures budget (which they claim has no impact on safety) not the operations budget. The actual budget was passed 2008 in the wake of another deadly crash. That bill ran out in 2013 and has been limping along ever since.

washingtonpost.com

Given the status of the infrastructure, claiming that capital expenditure cuts don’t impact safety is quite the despicable statement however.

The use of Amtrak as a political football for partisan purposes will continue by both parties and the only thing that will change is the number of deaths of riders that will get used by each side to score budget points rather than as a wake up call to the fact that our nation is disintegrating because of the anti-tax greed of the puppet masters of the House majority party.

re: #472 Dark_Falcon

Way to split hairs.

George W. Bush tried to zero out Amtrak funding in 2005.

Zero. It. Out.

The budget proposed by President Bush this month would eliminate federal funding for Amtrak, setting aside $360 million to operate some trains only if the service faces a shutdown. Amtrak received $1.2 billion in federal funding for the current fiscal year. The new fiscal year begins October 1.

479 makeitstop  May 16, 2015 12:13:39pm

Oh, look. In 2011.

Yet Amtrak finds itself back in a familiar spot. Last week, a House appropriations subcommittee approved a 2012 funding bill that reduces Amtrak’s operating budget by 60 percent and puts an end to state-supported routes in 15 states from New York to California.

480 makeitstop  May 16, 2015 12:19:13pm

2014.

The House is proposing a 40 percent funding cut for Amtrak in a new passenger rail bill that was unveiled on Thursday by the chamber’s Transportation Committee.
