Searching Google Maps for the N-Word Directs You to the White House and the Lincoln Memorial

True
Weird • Views: 25,541

The Washington Post has a report on this ugly story: If You Search Google Maps for the N-Word, It Gives You the White House.

Someone on Google Maps just labeled President Obama a very bad word.

A reader points out that if you enter a search for “N***** king” — which contains a particularly offensive racial epithet for African Americans — Google Maps will point you to the White House. We tested the claim on Tuesday night and confirmed that, yes, this is a thing. It even zooms the camera in, automatically. (For sensitivity’s sake, we partially obscured the search term and the autocomplete responses in the GIF below.)

I confirmed that another racist search term reported by users on Twitter also takes you to the White House:

And here’s another lovely search result from Google Maps:

Remember, though; according to conservatives there’s no more racism in the United States.

I wonder how extensive the googlebombing necessary for this was.

Either way, it’s just one of those petty and seriously ugly things that make me slump into my chair and hang my head.

I work with a diverse group of people who, generally speaking, get along pretty well. Yesterday I was on a break, looking across our production floor and openly wondering how many of my coworkers harbored racist attitudes.

Despite reassurances even here, I’ve become convinced that a majority of the country is still incurably racist, and all it takes is a cursory glance at facebook and twitter. And that the generational change and demographic change is so overstated as to be minimal: racist parents are still giving way to mostly racist children and resentments.

We haven’t improved whatsoever, outside of making our racism more subtle and insidious.

All Charles City schools placed on lockdown

Charles City County school officials confirm all schools in the district are currently on lockdown.

The action was taken at the direction of the sheriff’s office, according to school officials. However, officials weren’t able say why the schools were placed on lockdown.

NBC12 is working to gather more information on the incident and will update on-air and online.

How’s that new government working out, Bibi?

There’s a pretty good article at The Guardian about this mess Netanyahu is now facing.

The first crisis in the new rightwing government of Binyamin Netanyahu - over a discriminatory pilot scheme that would have seen some Palestinian workers banned from using Israeli buses in the occupied West Bank - is deeply instructive.

Scotched by Netanyahu barely hours after it had been approved by defence minister Moshe Yaalon, amid an outcry from across the Israeli political spectrum that condemned the move as racist and smacking of apartheid, it has underscored the immense political challenges facing Israel’s prime minister.

At the head of a coalition with a majority of one in the Knesset, Netanyahu has found himself exactly where many expected him to be after having assembled a coalition heavily dominated by the pro-settler right: between a rock and a hard place.

I did a round of press with NYT, AP, BBC interviews, plus local paper Newsday. A friend in Washington state got it rolling, but he was very hesitant to talk to the press and asked me to do it.

Even though my name and business were mentioned in all of the press reports, I ended up losing one client - a company in Texas. Good times.

“Everybody else wants to ask that question about, ‘Gee, would you have gone into Iraq, you know, knowing what you know now?’ And I think if President Bush had known that he would have a total incompetent follow him — that would not even be able to negotiate a Status of Forces Agreement with Iraq, that would start helping our enemies and just totally put the Middle East in chaos — then he would have to think twice about doing anything if he had known he would have such a total incompetent leader take over after him. That should be the question,” Gohmert said in an interview with radio host John Fredericks, according to an audio clip highlighted by Right Wing Watch.

Gohmert really doesn’t seem to understand how much of an incompetent he’s painting Dubya, that the man went into a war without any guarantees that he’d be in office to see it through or that the guy who replaced him would do so in his stead.

I’m not quite as pessimistic as you are. In 2008, 67 million people voted for a black man for President. If you divide by the turnout on the naïve assumption that the ones who didn’t vote were the same, you get 107 million. Now this is undoubtedly an underestimate, because the people who couldn’t or weren’t allowed to vote would probably be more, not less, likely to vote for Obama, but still—107 million voting-age Americans who were or would have been willing to vote for a black man for President! 50 years ago that would have been absolutely inconceivable.

Then there were undoubtedly a lot of people who aren’t like these yahoos, but might have felt a little squicky about it since it was something new. It’s not new any more, and I think a large majority of the population are OK with a nonwhite President. (Soon we’ll see if they’re OK with a nonmale President—fingers crossed.)

I just think the extreme racists, as they become more isolated, are becoming more and more virulent. Unfortunately, they’re also becoming cops, Congressmen, and Senators….

In the wingnut fantasy world, the only way that we could have failed to negotiate a new SOFA that allowed American troops to remain past the 2011 deadline is because the President either didn’t want one or because he was incompetent. They remain convinced that Iraq totally wanted us to stay but was playing “hard to get,” that they wanted something from us in exchange for immunity and the whole “Yankee Go Home!” bit was for public consumption.

Flickr has caused some unexpected controversy with the auto-tagging feature it launched earlier this month. The “advanced image recognition” system has been found to make some pretty embarrassing and offensive mistakes, including tagging a portrait of a black man with the word “ape.”

The photograph was by photographer Corey Deshon of a man he met named William.

59 freetoken  May 20, 2015 12:08:24pm

Remembering that both “Guns” and “God” start with the same letter and sort of sound the same:

Huckabee aims for support at shooting range

Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee took some target practice at an indoor shooting range Tuesday before firing political shots at Democrat rival Hillary Clinton, who also was hunting for Iowa supporters in the run up to the caucuses next February.

[…]

If he could question Clinton, Huckabee told the campaign gathering, “I would ask her why didn’t she answer the call of (Ambassador) Chris Stevens four times when he was begging for help in Benghazi?

[…]

Tom Hudson, general manager of the Johnston business, held up the target Huckabee had been firing at to reveal some well-placed shots.

“If you want somebody that you think might be on target, no pun intended here, with where we want to go with this country,” Hudson said.

I note that the local news outlet story isn’t particularly neutral in their reporting.

Water rate increases are a-comin’…but I want to know if these rates will ever go down after the drought is over?

Why is the District proposing a rate increase?
The proposed rate increase is necessitated by increased costs of providing water service, primarily due to:

San Francisco Public Utilities Commission’s wholesale water rates increasing by 30 percent.
Increases in operating expenses due to state mandated water demand management and reporting.
Financing costs for the District’s capital improvement program.
Projected decrease in water sales due state mandated reductions in water production.

30 per cent…that’s significant.

Was reading over at Raw Story that Twitter had killed that account. Did the Troll revive it again?

The account was suspended within hours by Twitter after multiple reports of abuse. The promoted tweet was also pulled from the service.

“within hours”, but the damage is done.

True. But given Twitters history of foot dragging on other things (upchuck for one) this was almost instantaneous.

And here I am about to go paddleboarding in 55 degree water wearing nothing but shorts and a t-shirt. I suppose I could wear my wetsuit, but I’m too lazy to put that on, and I don’t expect to fall in.

Kitty break:

Remember last week when a little feline overlord drama was playing out here over the sweet spot on my desk? Well the elder (b&w) cat, having now fully recognized that this is prime real estate, appropriates it every chance she gets (usually when the tabby gets up to go do something else).

The tabby, trying to work out a way to sleep in the same area without having to lose any fur over it, has managed to dig around and arrange a corner of the blanket to sleep on. She’s now sleeping soundly, wedged between the paper tray “throne” and my electronic die cutter.

So I’ve lost 1/3 of my desk to feline idiosyncrasies. It’s beyond absurd.

no way you take a whitewater kayak on a big river like the hudson, and the water is that cold you need dry gear.

Republicans in South Carolina’s state Senate had to work to outmaneuver one of their own on Tuesday after he threatened to filibuster a ban on abortions after the 20-week mark because he opposed exceptions for incest and rape victims.

According to the Huffington Post, state Sen. Lee Bright tried to filibuster the bill, arguing that it would encourage women to falsely report rapes.

I envy the ‘less government’ nature of this teatard paradise.

Apparently, the lights on Ceres have been a puzzle for a while.
From January 23, 2015:

NASA Finds Mysterious Bright Spot on Dwarf Planet Ceres: What Is It?

A strange, flickering white blotch found on the dwarf planet Ceres by a NASA spacecraft has scientists scratching their heads.

The white spot on Ceres in a series of new photos taken on Jan. 13 by NASA’s Dawn spacecraft, which is rapidly approaching the round dwarf planet in the asteroid belt between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter. But when the initial photo release on Monday (Jan. 19), the Dawn scientists gave no indication of what the white dot might be.

“Yes, we can confirm that it is something on Ceres that reflects more sunlight, but what that is remains a mystery,” Marc Rayman, mission director and chief engineer for the Dawn mission, told space.com in an email.

Most Republicans are very happy when they receive news that a woman died from an illegal abortion. This reinforces the ‘wages of sin’ narrative they are so fond of.

I had a guy, for real, try to use the CDROM drive to read a 3.5” floppy. It had, of course, the only copy of a critical document on it. It was … interesting … disassembling that drive to rescue the floppy.

Google is all automatic. Businesses had point out their locations and put their descriptions on it. My guess is, somebody hacked in and used that service. That’s the problem with the “all-algorithm” model.
