Prepare to be disappointed, because that is the core claim of Scott Lively’s “The Pink Swastika” and lots of people echo his ideas. It’s part and parcel of the current wave of scaremongering about Big Gay.

Explicitly pandering know-nothing-ism:

Jeb Bush rails against ‘intellectual arrogance’ in climate change debate

Jeb Bush hit back against President Obama’s claim that climate change runs an immediate risk, saying Wednesday that while it shouldn’t be ignored, it’s still not “the highest priority.”

As he has before, Bush acknowledged “the climate is changing” but stressed that it’s unknown why. “I don’t think the science is clear of what percentage is man-made and what percentage is natural. It’s convoluted,” he said at a house party in Bedford, New Hampshire.

“For the people to say the science is decided on this is really arrogant, to be honest with you,” he continued. “It’s this intellectual arrogance that now you can’t have a conversation about it, even. The climate is changing. We need to adapt to that reality.”

[…]

This is the play-book that is being passed around for the “serious” Republican (Bush, Christie, Kasich) candidates.

I look at this way; Germany was kicking ass all over the world until El Alamein and Stalingrad.

We know the rest of the story. Sooner or later, Da’esh will reach their zenith, and then it’ll be all downhill from there. The only question is will be a quick collapse or a slow, drawn-out affair?

Arguably, based on their apocalyptic ideology, if they were to lose control of the small Syrian town of Dabiq, the whole mess that is ISIS would likely unravel in fairly short order. Dabiq is key to their eschatological worldview, and from their perspective, it is absolutely vital that they hold it. If they lose Dabiq, they lose their very raison d’être.

If they were to lose Dabiq, I have a feeling (instinct more than anything) that a lot of their followers would become disillusioned in no time flat. They are, quite bluntly, a doomsday cult.

That’s not to say they couldn’t re-invent themselves - When Prophecy Fails is sort of the textbook on that matter - but it wouldn’t be easy, to be sure. They’ve staked their claim to being the Islamic Army of the End Times. And if they lose a town that’s pretty much central to their apocalyptic views, they’ll have to find something else to give them a reason for being.

Not to say they’re not wily enough to do that. But because in the case of Da’esh, their claim is “backed up” by a hadith, if that particular hadith can be shown to be wrong - and irrefutably so - what then? They’ve screwed the pooch at that point.

Of course, Sunnis are a majority, and they generally reject Shi’ism, though not as violently as ISIS does.

Yep……….that’s the source of the Sunni/Shi’a schism. The basis for ISIS’ existence is a hadith that references the town of Dabiq, where the “armies of Rome” will be defeated by Muslims. Sort of like Har Meggidon in Christian eschatology. In fact, archeology has shown that the site of Mt. Meggido has witnessed a good many “Armageddons” throughout its history.

Myself? I admit, though I’m Sufi, I trend more towards Quranism, which - generally speaking - ignores the hadith pretty much entirely as unnecessary to Islam. It’s considered one of the more liberal trends in Islam.

Of course, the loonies consider Quranists - not to mention Sufis - as apostates.

These people, no matter what religion they espouse, who go to the extremes of apocalyptic visions, must really be miserable human beings.

My vision of the future, as an atheist, is that if we face a dystopian future and “apocalypse”, we will bring it upon ourselves through social, political and economic means. We humans, as is often the case, often can’t see past our noses, although some of us have recognized that the conditions here on the planet, of our own making, not some “higher being”, will be the cause of our demise.

We have a belief that technology will help solve the very problems that we ourselves have created through technology. Problem is, once a technology is economically (and politically) established, it is hard to change.

Fossil fuels are a prime example of that.

I haven’t watched much of him over the last decade, but as the POTUS said to Dave, I grew up with him. Letterman was very edgy and different when he first came on the scene. 87 lawhawk  May 21, 2015 6:20:31am

I guess that depends on which voters you’re thinking of. If they’re GOPer hardliners, they’ll never admit that they were released or that all of the important ones weren’t deleted. It will always be some permutation of that for the GOP; she didn’t release them all, or she made sure to delete the incriminating ones.

For most everyone else, this is minutiae that fades to background noise as the GOP candidates can’t distinguish themselves from the pack because they’re all indistinguishable from rabble rousers whose only prescription for the economy is tax cuts for the rich, trickle down, voodoo economics, and slashing and burning the safety net. Well at least the ice bucket challenge didn’t involve the mass production of plastic red noses which as VB got at will certainly be made by child laborers in sweatshops. It’s empty rhetoric. If people want to do something about child poverty, they should be willing to pay more in taxes so poor areas will get invested in, so education funding can go where tax breaks for wealthy right wingers would go, etc.

Similarly, Silly Putty was a failed experiment in making synthetic rubber. It got kicked around as useless for a while, until one guy risked his limited resources and marketed the stuff as a goofy toy for adults. en.wikipedia.org

Ha! Clean Products Wall Paper Cleaner was born out of the old Cincinnati company that came up with the original dough.

I actually had them as a client back in the late 70s here in Columbus. Not sure when the came to Columbus, but they were right here on the near east side of Columbus. I did design work at a packaging company and they gave my name to the guy that ran Clean Products and we did business for years before he went to Cleveland, his hometown, and we lost contact.

I think I still might have a can of the stuff around here somewhere.

Play-Doh was invented in Cincinnati at the behest of Kroger supermarkets. The inventor’s nephew (I misread that part earlier) later found out preschoolers was using the stuff to make Christmas tree ornaments, and began selling it as a children’s art supply.

Fox News Ends the GOP’s Debate Debacle, Will Cap Field at 10

The criteria set by Fox News is similar to the standards it has set for past debates. To qualify for the event, candidates must place in the top 10 of an average of the five most recent national polls by August 4th at 5 p.m. ET. Such polling must be conducted by major, nationally recognized organizations that use standard methodological techniques and recognized by Fox News.

As I explained earlier this week, figuring out how to winnow a field that could be 20-strong by the time the first debate rolls around had become a serious problem for the Republican National Committee

Based on the RCP average, you’d have Perry and Santorum in, but Kaisch, Fiorina, Jindal, and Graham all locked out. Santorum is at 2.3%, Kaisch at 2%, but Fiorina, Jindal, and Graham are all at 1.3%.

CNN to hold two heats in GOP debate

CNN will divide its Sept. 16 Republican White House primary debate into two heats: One for the top 10 candidates in polling, and one for the rest, the network announced Wednesday.

A candidate must have at least one percent support in polling to qualify for the second debate.

In addition, to qualify for the debates, a candidate must have visited and have at least one paid campaign aide working in two of the four early-voting states of Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina and Nevada.

It’s interesting because Miller is making a valid comment on how it’s human nature to mythologize people and events. For instance, if I understand Mr. Miller correctly, each of the MM films is a particular tall tale dealing with an individual (who may or may not be real) who comes to the aid of those who most need help. That person may be named ‘Max Rockatansky’ or indeed, it could’ve been someone entirely different but was misremembered as this mythical “Max”. Especially in the post-apocalyptic world Miller’s films envision, the survivors would most likely have to rely on oral transmission of knowledge for quite some time, and of course, that nicely lends itself to mythologizing.

Really clear in the _The Road Warrior_ since at the end from the narration the story is being told by the feral child as an adult. The third one implies as well that it’s a flashback telling as well from the survivors in the city.

Since I need to clean out closet space* I am going to start scanning the boxes of my parent’s slides. And while I am at it also scan my small collection of printed photos from the 80s and 90s. Go fully electronic storage.

So I’m searching for a decent scanner that can handle photo prints and also slides. And also has Digitial ICE software to help with cleaning up images.

Any Lizard experience I should take into account?

I was just thinking about that; I recalled the codas at the end of Road Warrior and Beyond Thunderdome - the implication being that the events in the films themselves were flashbacks told many, many years later. That being the case, of course, memories become distorted over time, so each film concludes with an unreliable narrator.

For all anyone knows, when Max drives out into the Outback at the end of Mad Max, he could’ve just died out there. Or maybe that’s just the story ‘“Max” told to someone else, and who knows if it’s entirely accurate?

Boy Scout leader is former Sec. of Defense Gates btw, he already opened up a large organization.

Last scanner I bought was an Epson model - flatbed with slide holders. It worked.

Reviews I have seen so far seem to imply that an Epson model of some sort is going to fit a need to get scanning of some quality without breaking my wallet. And I don’t have much scanning needs beyond photo-related items.

Does taking online classes cost money? If so, where did his DiL get the money? Is she working 2 jobs to support her family or to get an education while others support her?

Here is a snippet of Lamb’s testimony. First the part where that question is asked and answered.

Lamb’s testimony 1

Now for a continuation of the answer she was not able to give.

Lamb Testimony 2

Now, I can’t say for sure here intention was to say, “no it wasn’t because of constraints because the decision wasn’t up to me” or not but it looks like a quote that is ripe for quote mining.

BTW, here is the pdf

I am late but mr. klys got a Canon for much those same reasons too, and did a number of slides and negatives with it.
