Jeb Bush Has the Gall to Accuse Climate Scientists of “Intellectual Arrogance”

Jeb Bush shows the disturbingly awful attitude of the GOP towards the most serious problem the human race has ever faced; in his latest statement on climate change he has the absolute gall to accuse the climate science community of “intellectual arrogance.”

As he has before, Bush acknowledged “the climate is changing” but stressed that it’s unknown why. “I don’t think the science is clear of what percentage is man-made and what percentage is natural. It’s convoluted,” he said at a house party in Bedford, New Hampshire.

“For the people to say the science is decided on this is really arrogant, to be honest with you,” he continued. “It’s this intellectual arrogance that now you can’t have a conversation about it, even. The climate is changing. We need to adapt to that reality.”

The persecution complex is in full view here, because nobody’s stopping Jeb Bush from “having a conversation” about climate change at all. Here he is on CNN, in front of millions of people, complaining he’s not being allowed to speak. Please. His line about “intellectual arrogance” is obviously carefully designed to pander to the anti-science Republican base, who don’t trust science or scientists.

But Bush’s “soft denialism” is even more insidious than outright denialism. He’s trying to sound more reasonable than most of his colleagues, but in fact his idea of policy leads to the same place: doing nothing.

The origin of domestic dogs is poorly understood [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14 and 15], with suggested evidence of dog-like features in fossils that predate the Last Glacial Maximum [6, 9, 10, 14 and 16] conflicting with genetic estimates of a more recent divergence between dogs and worldwide wolf populations [13, 15, 17, 18 and 19]. Here, we present a draft genome sequence from a 35,000-year-old wolf from the Taimyr Peninsula in northern Siberia. We find that this individual belonged to a population that diverged from the common ancestor of present-day wolves and dogs very close in time to the appearance of the domestic dog lineage. We use the directly dated ancient wolf genome to recalibrate the molecular timescale of wolves and dogs and find that the mutation rate is substantially slower than assumed by most previous studies, suggesting that the ancestors of dogs were separated from present-day wolves before the Last Glacial Maximum. We also find evidence of introgression from the archaic Taimyr wolf lineage into present-day dog breeds from northeast Siberia and Greenland, contributing between 1.4% and 27.3% of their ancestry. This demonstrates that the ancestry of present-day dogs is derived from multiple regional wolf populations.

Canadian fighter jets landed their second airstrike on an ISIL compound in Syria on Wednesday, according to the Department of National Defence.

Defence Minister Jason Kenney said in a statement that two CF-18 Hornet aircrafts led an aerial assault on an ISIL “staging area” north of Ar-Raqqah, a city in northern Syria.

All well and good, but the standard freeper position is that this literally outweighs the entire US effort. The more radical believe it opposes Obama, since he is alleged to be aiding ISIL rather than sending our own planes to bomb them.

Glad to see that the Canucks are takin’ care of business while our Ambulance Chaser-In-Chief is secretly offering ISIS “flexibility”.

Inland ice in Antarctica melting fast

Many glaciers on the Southern Antarctic Peninsula (SAP) — a region previously thought to be stable compared to other glacier masses in Antarctica — became destabilized in 2009, and they have been melting at accelerating rates ever since, researchers say. These glaciers, which rest on bedrock that dips below sea level toward the continent’s interior, help to buttress inland ice shelves — but their structures are presumed to be unstable. Now, Bert Wouters and colleagues have combined satellite altimetry and gravity observations to show how such land-based ice has thinned over the past 12 years or so in the region. The researchers’ results suggest that ice shelves on the SAP have weakened significantly, causing marine-terminating glaciers to flow faster into the sea. Between 2002 and 2010, the mass balance of such glaciers remained around zero, according to Wouters and the other researchers. But by about 2009, glaciers on the SAP had begun to lose mass at accelerating rates, they say. Since that year, the glaciers in the region have added 300 trillion liters of water to the ocean. I doubt the links are as mysterious as Mooney is trying to make them out to be. Perhaps WaPo doesn’t want to really get into the problems with religious thought, but there is a great deal of churn about modernity and science among any religious group that is high on magick.

I think Rosenau’s graph may be a bit misleading because nominal religious identification is not the same as religious practice. Someone may identify as “Jew” or “Catholic” out a sense of wanting to belong to a community rather than embrace the historic beliefs. Contrast to say the raving Pentecostal who is on some sort of religious trip.

I was going to guess that was in MN before I even clicked on it. We’ve got a large Somali population in Minneapolis and there have been successful attempts (well, except for the getting arrested part) to recruit.

That said, Eden Prairie is one of the conservative donut suburbs that surrounds the Twin Cities. It’s on the opposite side of the donut as Michele Bachmann’s district but Eric Paulsen is just a big a puke. I’m glad that she had classmates that debated her on this and made her admit that she got all her info from TV news. It’s not just FOX.

Way late on this one, but Priebus is ex-WisGoP. He’s the same guy that weaseled his way into leadership back in the wave of 2010. He’s going to be backing his man Walker(and his money men) as long as possible.

Edit: Lot’s of Walker supporters here(Wisconsin) are anything but ‘stupid’. Misinformed, uninterested in the details? Yep. Stupid? No.
