An Awesome Video From the Milk Carton Kids: “Poison Tree”

I’m a little man in a little town
Music • Views: 46,525

YouTube

These two guys remind me a little of Simon and Garfunkel, and their new video is touching and beautifully produced. From the album Monterey.

The steam above the water rises through the air.
All I want’s to touch it; feel it on my skin.
Follow in it’s motion; travel where it’s been

I’m a little man in a little town.
It’s a little cold; I’m a little down.
I get a little angry a little bit each day.
A little while longer we’ll dig a little grave.

The stitches of my pocket fray upon the seam.
My truest secrets spilled over my heart beat.
A frail little drop of the poison tree.

I’m a little man in a little town.
It’s a little cold; I’m a little down.
I get a little angry a little bit each day.
A little while longer we’ll dig a little grave.

I laughed. I was just thinking today though with Huckabee’s defense of Duggar that he may be the most disgusting person in the GOP candidate stable which is really saying something considering who his fellow candidates are.

What pisses me off most about Mike Huckabee honestly is and there’s a lot to hate about Mike Huckabee- anti gay, anti woman, anti anyone not an evangelical Christian but anyhow what pisses me off is how he with a son arrested for torturing a dog to death has the nerve to attack the parenting skills of President and Mrs. Obama. And I still remember how he attacked Natalie Portman for “glamorizing” being pregnant and single even though she was engaged and the fact he had nothing to say about Bristol Palin. Huck is the face of conservative Christian hypocrisy.

Let me know if that is too far. I did dial it back from the original thought, which would have said “Republicans” instead of Huckabee and Duggar.

Up to you but given Huckabee’s vigorous defense of Duggar, I think it’s okay. I’d stay away from generic Republicans though it’s definitely fair game to point out that they share his and his family’s views on women.

Huckabee was the only one stupid enough to give the guy a full pledged defense and to make the people talking about it out to be the bad guys not the you know actual bad guy. Huck will defend anyone who’s a fellow evangelical. I seem to recall reading about him buying the cock and bull story of a born again who was convicted of murdering a relative of Bill Clinton’s and getting the guy out of prison and I think the guy committed murder again. Not sure the exact details but it’s actually that which ruined his cred with law and order conservatives.

I went through an unexpectedly deep puddle once that came way up the door. The car plowed through, but it was a VW, and I’m going: “Oh shit! My alternator was underwater!” Nary a problem then or later, though.

40 RealityBasedSteve  May 23, 2015 6:54:49pm

I am feeling like a puppy with a full belly. Seasoned some country style ribs with my seasoning mix, browned them off, and braised them in some BBQ sauce. Homemade Mac / Cheese (Alton Brown Recipe) with a drained can of mild Rotel tossed in, and fresh homemade bread with butter.

Now I’ve got to go pack up some gear, weather is going to be great tomorrow and there are 5 -6 of us going to meet at the quarry for a couple of dives. Only problem is that with all the rain, visibility is going to be about 10 feet, maybe 20 at best under the thermocline. Doesn’t matter, it’s still diving. (and being that it’s less than perfect conditions, really helps hone your skills)

Life is pretty freaking good.

Latest spin on the vote in Ireland permitting SSM… and it’s a doozy.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but evidently over a million eligible Irish voters did not vote. So the vote possible could have turned out differently.

Yes, if you make the assumption that every one of those voters that didn’t vote was against the measure. Of course, the fact that every single poll had the measure well ahead means that your group would be a statistical improbability on the order of Miley Cyrus swinging by my house this evening.

It’s the same here—if the Silent Majority™ (40%—but whatever) that didn’t turn out to vote did so, the Conservative Utopia would be voted in. They ignore that at least 10% of those are people the Republicans systematically keep from voting.

There are three knocks on Huckabee that were commonly heard from the right prior to the breakout of Duggargate (since it involves a coverup, the Watergate reference works better here than on most scandals):

1. His pardon of a man who committed mass murder. That makes lots of people question his judgement.

2. His working with Michelle Obama at times and his refusing to criticize her “Let’s Move, America!” initiative. This was a case of Huckabee actually doing the right thing but getting hated on by those who believe that Barack and Michelle Obama can do not right and must be opposed on everything.

3. His raising taxes as governor of Arkansas coupled with his willingness to increase social spending. The latter worries people who think Huckabee is too friendly to the ‘welfare state’ (in quotes because the meaning of that term is variable), while the former cuts against established party dogma.

I don’t want to pester you as I know you’re about to call it a night but that just boggles my mind that someone trying to empower impoverished and run down communities is made out to be a bad person. I am just curious then. I just don’t understand why there exists within the right contempt for people who do that. Take the dig on Obama for being a community organizer for example. I don’t want to pester you as I know you’re about to call it a night but that just boggles my mind that someone trying to empower impoverished and run down communities is made out to be a bad person. I would think conservatives would admire that but I’m often proven wrong.

I’ve never thought Obama was being a bad person with his efforts down in Roseland (the name of the neighborhood in Chicago where he worked in the 1980’s), but one can think someone a good person and still argue that he or she is advocating for bad policy choices.

96 allegro  May 23, 2015 7:59:47pm

I had the funnest afternoon with my best friend and two terrific young men. (No, not like that… get your minds outa the gutter.) The young men were her grandson and his new boyfriend. Early 20s, bright, totally adorable, fine young men with bright futures ahead who are crazy about each other. How anyone could find these two guys anything but lovable is beyond me. And any who would deliberately close their hearts and minds to such fun, generous people are cheating themselves.

Well what are these bad policies then? What’s wrong with advocating for more spending into these communities? And you’re right, you never did say that but there have been plenty of conservatives who have tried to paint community activists like the young Barack Obama as bad people for what they do and I think that’s fucked up beyond reason.

Nope. Sunday starts when the sun comes up. So 5:15am is still Saturday (grandfathered in by not sleeping) but at 5:16 when the sun breaks the horizon, then it’s Sunday. Some groups claim that it’s actually the start of civil twilight in the morning, but they are just wrong, and we should take their lunch money and laugh at them.

I love that about libertarians. They think they would do so much better but we’ve got so few examples of them actually running anything much less successfully. I understand the frustrations of third parties and the desire to have their voice heard but what pisses me off is these third parties who only run candidates for governor, senator, or president. Take Virginia last time. The Virginia LP could have easily nominated someone for Lt Governor and AG but did not. I think they forfeit some of their complaints about the two party system by doing that.

My Favorite paragraph:

The greatest examples of libertarianism in action are the hundreds of men, women and children standing alongside the roads all over Honduras. The government won’t fix the roads, so these desperate entrepreneurs fill in potholes with shovels of dirt or debris. They then stand next to the filled-in pothole soliciting tips from grateful motorists. That is the wet dream of libertarian private sector innovation.

Young is the writer CCJ calls a “feminist.” 0_o

I am sure CCJ piggybacked on Young’s coverage and her Twitter TL to track down “Adam” and the classmates who helped carry the mattress. Young, for all her faults, is a better reporter than CCJ will ever be. She did the legwork, and he did the dirty work.

re: #128 wheat-dogghazi-mailgate

The Columbia rape denialists are straight up conspiracy theorists

no one is saying conspiracies don’t happen. They do, but by their nature, they tend to collapse pretty quickly because keeping everyone in line is really hard to do. People let something slip or someone gets a guilty conscience. What the rape truthers would have you believe is that three women and a number of likely co-conspirators—all college kids, mind you—have colluded not just to create these accusations but to bring them in front of Columbia (successfully, in Anon’s case), stick to the story despite immense amounts of media pressure, and conceal any evidence not just to counter their stories but also that could prove that they knew each other well enough to conspire before the fact.

And that this is more believable than the claim that there’s a creepy guy who likes pushing himself on women and, when caught, lied about it. That requires believing one person is lying, not that multiple people are conspiring in a lie.

I mean, come on. It’s technically possible that this group of Columbia students are a bunch of criminal masterminds that need jobs in either organized crime or covert spying operations for the government, due to their ability to hold the line so well. But it’s really not likely. It becomes even more unlikely when you start exploring the question of why they would do this, because there’s not a single shred of evidence of anyone having a vendetta against Nungesser that would motivate this elaborate conspiracy and cover-up. Whereas the motive for his alleged behavior is simple: He likes bullying women and gets off on it.

So let’s stop pretending that both sides of this story have equally likely stories. It’s embarrassing, as well as sexist as all hell.

I read that. UpChuck and Cathy Young are examples of CTs. Neither believes Sulkowicz’ side of the story. It’s easier, somehow,to believe that S. and all her friends are making up the whole thing just to attack Nungesser for some unexplained reason.

I had never heard of Cathy Young till just this week. She’s not right in the head, IYAM.

We’ve been getting the rain up here in the DFW area, and we’re getting more right now. Lake Grapevine started the year 13ft low, and is now 15 feet over. Lake Ray Hubbard, which supplies water to Dallas and cities that surround the lake, went from 10 below to being over.

I do think this system should shift back to California where it belongs.

The emphasis is indeed on “warrior”, not “social justice”. Supposedly also meant against people who are being obnoxious about it. And Lord knows there are such folks. That said, those who use the term itself are usually no less obnoxious.

CCJ clearly believes the “Asian women are passive” myth, or at least he’s promoting it. The truth is quite different, and most Chinese ladies expect to control the family finances after marriage. If Mrs CCJ is one of those, she probably keeps him on a tight financial leash.

There are others that see this episode as a result of sheltering and repressing human desires. They think that had he access to sex education by Planned Parenthood, been allowed to watch edgy Hollywood films, been encouraged to experimentation with a girlfriend, or gotten free condoms from the local school nurse, then none of this would have happened. Right. The stupidity of some people is mind boggling. Fan the flames of youthful lust and you end up with what we have: unprecedented numbers of unwed mothers, millions of abortions, rampant STDs, and the unraveling of the fabric of our whole society. Josh didn’t sin because he was repressed, he sinned because like all of us he is a sinner.

See how this works? This guy got away with his criminal behavior for many years without so much as a slap on the wrist. It’s all about the Benjamins, in the end, the State money, not the torture and mistreatment of kids. This guy has been in practice in the area for 40 yrs and targeted low income, uneducated and non-English speaking patients.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - A Jacksonville pediatric dentist under investigation by the state of Florida is now the target of a class action lawsuit alleging his practice is a front for a “sadistic and systematic scheme of physical and psychological torture and abuse” of “utterly defenseless” children.

In a lawsuit filed Wednesday in the 4th Judicial Circuit Court in Duval County, four plaintiffs represented by the Adsum Law Firm accuse Dr. Howard Schneider of assault, battery, false imprisonment and intentionally inflicting “severe emotional distress” spanning decades from his University Boulevard office.

The lawsuit follows days of protests outside Dr. Schneider’s office and a wave of complaints from parents alleging he physically abused their children, botched their dental work, and stonewalled parents and investigators when his methods were questioned. More

firstcoastnews.com

He’s described in the class lawsuit as a “pathological sadist” suffering from a “psychosexual disorder” who derives “sexual excitement” from inflicting pain or humiliation on another person, consenting or otherwise.”

Heh: Posters Of “Public Pooper” Chuck Johnson Go Up Around Columbia.

It seems some people still are convinced he was involved though, as a new series of posters were put up in the Columbia University area early this morning of Johnson with his Twitter handle and the phrase, “Public Pooper.” For anyone who isn’t familiar with the meaning of that phrase, just know that even if Johnson isn’t involved in this current “Fake Rape” postering, this couldn’t have happened to a nicer person (who allegedly can’t control his bladder).

From the Miami Herald:

Miami Beach is again preparing for large crowds on Memorial Day weekend with changing traffic patterns, hundreds of police officers and DUI checkpoints.

Hundreds of thousands of visitors typically arrive for a weekend of *hip-hop* music events known as Urban Beach Week. The festivities don’t have one sole organizer and are not sponsored by the city. Several unaffiliated performances and parties will take place at different venues.

Charles C. Johnson is a careful reporter for the Daily Caller, an expert at digging through public records to find graft or hypocrisy. Example: It was Johnson who proved that former Institute for Study of War analyst Elizabeth O’Bagy both had a problem with disclosure and a problem with overstating her academic credentials.

Today, Johnson attempts to prove a point that Republicans have been making before they release their full debt limit demands. “The Democratic Party,” he writes, “has consistently battled debt ceiling increases when Republican presidents were in power.” Fair-minded journalists have been wondering about this, wondering how many Pinocchios or Pants on Fire to assign Barack Obama when he says the GOP’s current demands are without precedent. Johnson’s near-total failure suggests that Obama might be right.

A much more important person than CCJ has died: John Nash and his wife were killed in a car accident on the NJ Turnpike.
t.co

Nash was the subject of the movie, A Beautiful Mind, and won a Nobel Prize for his work in game theory.

He was known as the “phantom of Fine Hall,” because during his schizophrenic phases would leave cryptic math equations on the hallway chalkboards in the math building at Princeton. No one ever saw him doing it, so we called him a phantom.

He’s tweeted before that he wants to “take out” journalists, and that he likes to collect “scalps.” It’s his tough guy way of saying he wants to discredit (smear) people he doesn’t like. He’s taking credit for the Brian Williams fiasco, for example.

re: #292 stpaulbear

Was it this, perhaps?

observer.com

When Charles tweeted about my book last week, I decided to act. Why not email him and talk? Clearly we share some common ground, why not connect? Having already spoken to left-wing activists who manipulate the media and the people behind #GamerGate, why not learn from someone equally controversial? We ended up chatting on the phone for about thirty minutes last week discussing everything from the Overton Window to the towns of central California. It was pleasant, provocative and challenging. I came away impressed in a lot of ways. I followed up over email with the questions below. Some of the views he expressed I strongly disagree with. In other answers, I think he nails it. But that is the nature of a figure like Charles—smart, but undeniably frustrating in the ways he uses it.

I hope that Charles’ honest and amoral tactics help reveal even more about the media system (sorry, racket) to you, the public. Only when we know how our news really gets made, can we gauge our appetite for consuming it.

re: #295 Justanotherhuman

A fence-sitting profile is still not “glowing”.

301 Nyet  May 24, 2015 7:39:56am

A “glowing” profile would call him a real journalist, a fearless maverick and a positive influence - or something in that vein, without much equivocation. As I have already said, some profiles were less critical than necessary (e.g. the WaPo one). This one is the most relatively positive of them all - and yet it’s still not glowing. Even if he obviously loved being called Darth Vader.

302 stpaulbear  May 24, 2015 7:47:07am

re: #301 Nyet

I guess it’s all relative then. Any interview that refers to him as anything more than a scum sucking slime mold is much more glowing than he deserves.

True, it’s more glowing than he deserves, but when that glowing = 0 and he deserves -100000, it’s still 0 in the end.

I’m not a bit surprised that he’s associated with a “mainstream” media outlet. The Today Show has had Ann Coulter on. This is why I refer to media as “mainslime”. My only complaint about this is unless Twitter does something (which they probably FUCKING won’t, because they NEVER do!) , this whole Deray episode just serves to boost CCJ’s profile. He’s getting attention from this and he loves it.

As long as his hate spewing account stays open, he’s free to reap the benefits in whatever way he sees fit.

This is beyond fucked up and I am happy to continue my boycott of Twitter until CCJ is gone. At this point I may never use the service again. They have shown time and again they don’t give two shits about their users.

Hopefully.

Why did Kincannon get booted off Twitter? I never did find out; was it just because he was such a vile POS?

Forgetting too. It was really amazing to read that guy and to think “Yep, South Carolina’s Republicans thought he should be in charge of that thing.” I mean it is the same party and state of Lee Atwater but at least Atwater could pretend to have a human side with the music and all that. Kinkannon meanwhile…………

And when his account in reinstated (as it almost certainly will be, based on past events) he’ll be all puffed up about how he outsmarted Twitter and all of his lower-than-his-genius-IQ-detractors and blah blah blah.

Unless they zap his main account permanently, it’s really of little or no value to do it at all.

He’ll run. He is just waiting for the coronation. He most likely sees himself as the most experienced and in a way he is. He was a state rep than a congressman, big man in the budget committee as chairman, then off to FOX and then his run for governor.

Knowing his ego, he’ll want some ring kissing to accompany the checks and he will be in. I bet by mid-June he is in the running. He will present problems to Walker and others as he is slick and he won’t screw up saying something stupid.

re: #230 Justanotherhuman

I read about that the other day…a real-life Orin Scrivello, DDS.
