I think I was the first person in comments who mentioned that “take out” could have multiple meanings, but, as I mentioned then, it’s still a threat and should merit a ban. It’s amazing he got away with this shit for as long as he did after the third suspension.

Walking with coffee: Why does it spill?

I. INTRODUCTION
Abramson, a classic of sloshing dynamics, started his
seminal 1967 NASA report [1] with the remark that “it
is common everyday knowledge to each of us that any
small container filled with liquid must be moved or carried
very carefully to avoid spills.” While many of us may have
thought about this phenomenon, the question as to why we
spill coffee has never been formally studied to the authors’
knowledge. As we have all walked with a cup of coffee or other
liquid-filled containers, this is certainly a familiar problem
[see Fig. 1(a)].

So, after troubleshooting the weird Twitter glitch that seems to be effecting my account is that if I mention @ChuckCJohnson in my tweet, it can’t be embedded or seen by anyone but me.

It’s like some kind of transitive property of bannination that as far as I can see is only effecting my account. Here, see:

twitter.com

You can’t see that, can you? Well guess what, it’s there, in the phantom zone. I can see it in my timeline and take a grab of it from the url. See:

I don’t know what happened, maybe because I was both blocked by Chuck and reported his tweet as a threat … dunno. I never actually blocked him myself so it’s not like I’m trying to tweet behind a block. Anyway, weird.

What’s really odd though is that this one triggered only well after they suspended Chuck. For instance, y’all can see this tweet just fine.

That was sent long after he was suspended but before I started noticing this glitch. The problematic thing about this is that it serves as a kind of silent censorship, which if intentional is incredibly unethical. That’s why I’m kind of hoping it’s just an unintentional glitch in the system.

Re watching Series 8.

Out of curiosity, I timed how long during the episode that Clara held her breath. 107 seconds for the first time. Second time, 100 seconds the second, with the Paternoster Gang lasting 95 seconds.

This is Deep Breath. I think the Droid committed suicide at the Doctor’s behest. He is facing away from the ground, and during the part where the Doctor is speaking about one of them lying about their programming, the Half Faced Man look far more troubled.

Re watching Series 8 on DVD.

I am amused. The Doctor says he is not her boyfriend.

But, within 2 minutes he is begging her to “just see me.” Hell, before that, when she asks, when “Am I home?” His immediate reply is, “If you want to be.”

Series 8 was a tragedy. Clara, the Doctor, and Danny should not have been in conflict. But the Doctor and Danny competed, Clara was abrasive and unable to choose. All of these piled to together at the end of the season. The only two winners in the finale were the Brigadier, and Missy. Everyone else lost.

Wyoming Criminalizes taking Soil Samples and “Ecological” Photos on Public Lands

“…Supporters of the law are framing it as protecting property rights, but that doesn’t explain the prohibition from taking samples—and photos—from public lands

courthousenews.com

“…Gov. Matt Mead signed the “Data Trespass Bill” on March 10. Violators can be imprisoned for up to 1 year and fined if they “trespass” to collect ecological data, whether the “trespass” is on private or public land.
Photos and soil samples used for ecological purposes also are prohibited - even in state or national parks. Any such “data” collected by “trespassing” “shall be expunged by the entity from all files and data bases, and it shall not be considered in determining any agency action,” according to the bill.
The simple act of collecting such data without permission is illegal, and inadmissible in court, even if it reveals environmental hazards. In addition to prison, a first offense is punishable by a fine of up to $1,000. A second offense is punishable by no less than 10 days in jail and up to a year, and a fine of $5,000.

You could, but I actually wasn’t thinking of it that way, though every decision a company makes is tied to money. But Twitter’s image is a big thing to them; it wouldn’t take much for Google to offer GoogleTalk and enough people could switch easily to that.

In other words, it’s not necessarily a bad think that a company thinks of it’s bottom line. Had companies in the 20th century been truly thinking of the bottom line, segregation would have ended before it got going.

I do want to note that Doctor Who changed with the 8th Doctor. Since then romance is prominent in the show.

The 8th Doctor has a huge number of Audioplays. And he had more than a few romantic relationships with companions. In addition, stories about Time Travel, in the ways that the Time Travel is the plot, rather than driving it.

This is why I call the 8th Doctor the first NuWho Doctor. An emphasis on time travel and it’s impacts, plus romantic subplots.

And yes, Clara is my favorite companion. It was the Name of the Doctor that pulled me out of a depression. As long as Moffat does pull some George Martin or Davies BS on characterization of anyone, I will be fine.

I don’t see a love triangle, I see a messy breakup followed by a rebound relationship. And really, I think it works best when the Doctor and his companion are buds or teacher and student. Donna and Amy remain my favorite companions because they weren’t mooning over the Doctor, they were pals who were along for the ride. Which makes the way Davies and Moffat wrote them out of the series seem all the more insulting.

I understand why Karen wanting to be written out would lead to something like that, but it really does feel like they just wrote her off mid-series so as to shoehorn in Clara in time for the whole Impossible Girl thread to play out. There were good episodes in the second half of the series, but overall it feels sort of rushed. Time of the Doctor is probably the best example of how it seemed like Moffat was trying to tie up all the loose ends of the Smith era in as quickly a manner as possible.

And, I say love triangle because, the Doctor and Danny were competing. And she was see-sawing.

The “I love you” and the end of “Mummy on the Orient Express?” Moffat and Coleman have both said that was NOT to Danny, but to the Doctor.

Then, during “In the Forest of the Night,” Clara was more affectionate to Danny.

And then the mixed signals in the finale. They went to save Danny, but without know the Cyberman in the graveyard, she said this about the Doctor.

He is the closest person to me in this whole world. He is the man I will always forgive, always trust. The one man I would never, ever lie to.

Time of the Doctor was really shafted by the BBC.

Moffat and Smith had just 63 minutes to work with.

9th had something like 90 minutes. And the 10th had 120-130 minutes.

There is no excuse for that. I should note that the BBC then gave a massive Christmas special to EastEnders, which was the show that killed Doctor Who under Michael Grade in the late 80’s.

re: #186 The War TARDIS

And, I say love triangle because, the Doctor and Danny were competing. And she was see-sawing.

The “I love you” and the end of “Mummy on the Orient Express?” Moffat and Coleman have both said that was NOT to Danny, but to the Doctor.

Then, during “In the Forest of the Night,” Clara was more affectionate to Danny.

And then the mixed signals in the finale. They went to save Danny, but without know the Cyberman in the graveyard, she said this about the Doctor.

Reminds me of Final Fantasy VII. Even down to the ending of it, with one point being dead.

That’s why I say a messy breakup, because it seems like Clara’s relationship with Danny is more a way of making up for the loss of Eleven than any real affection on her part. Perhaps there’s some real love there, but for the most part he seems like nothing more than a rebound.

OK, the football game in MASH was stupid.

Fixed it!

10 seconds of go, followed by 1 minute of sit. Yes, saying this is blasphemous in the US, but Football is just boring.

That’s why each goal increments the score by six points—to give the illusion more is happening than there actually is.

See, thing is, I think we could have been happy with a 63 minute send-off to Eleven rather than what we got, which was Moffat trying to prove how clever he is by cramming all the loose threads from 3 series together into one neat little bow. The End of Time wasn’t Davies trying to be clever and show how all the little things during Ten’s run had a common link, it was just Ten saving the world in the most grandiose fashion possible.

Just not a good one. But, the writing made clear she was not in the right, and in the finale, she got smashed to pieces for hit. Along with anyone who was not the Brigadier and Missy.

But, then we have the finale to How I Met Your Mother, and the whole thing with Aunt Robin.

I’ve always wondered if that silly football game was the only way Altman could get the studio to give him the money to make the movie.

“It’ll be a satire on the military and the Vietnam war!”

“It’ll be a slap-happy romp with a football game at the end!”

Fran Tarkenton was in it, so yeah probably.

I like the cleverness, he just need what was given to Eccleston and Tennant’s finales.

I like the big payoff for plot arcs. Of course, we should probably stop right here, as one of the big faultlines in the Doctor Who fandom is the one between Davies and Moffat fans. I am very much on the latter side.

Loved the show, never missed it—but they lost me as far as Ted’s love life goes when he deliberately let Victoria get away (the first time!) Hard to be sympathetic after that. There’s nowhere I wouldn’t have gone, nothing I wouldn’t have done….

Oh God, Missy, I have never felt so bad about being right. When your big series-ending twist is something that can be guessed on a lark, it’s time to hang up your writing spurs and hand off the show to someone new.

This seems to be a thing with CBS shows though. Heard a rumor that a reason Cote d’Pablo’s character left NCIS was so the showrunner could advance Tony’s story. Which is just damn stupid. Why does a female character interfere with writing for a Male character.

One of the problems with How I Met Your Mother was that they had to write one more season than they thought they would have to, because CBS unprecedentedly bought two at once. It was after the Charlie Sheen Schweinerei, and they were afraid the reboot of Two and a Half Men would tank.

Listen to some of his audio stories. They are Really Good. And there are a lot of them. 82 by my count. Making him the most prolific of the Doctor’s in terms of stories, between Audio and Television. Even more than Tom Baker.

A lot of the themes from the 8th Doctor stories have influenced the current run of Doctor Who.

Trivia: Gary Burghoff (Radar), G. Wood (General Hammond), Timothy Brown, and Corey Fischer (Cpt. Cardozo) were the only four actors to reprise their roles from the movies in the TV series; the exception to that is that Brown played a corporal in the movie, but played Spearchucker Jones in the first season on TV.

Of those four, Burghoff played his role the longest (through the beginning of the eighth season), eclipsed only by Alan Alda and Jamie Farr, IIRC.

Anyone else see Tomorrowland yet? Took the kids to see it at a drive-in tonight (seemed fitting), and it was lots of fun. Underneath the fun is a good message, too - a polemic against Fox News and the right-wing fear machine.

And having said that: drive-ins are fun for nostalgia but tough on aging backs. Two hours piled into the back of a minivan with the gate up isn’t as much fun at 50 as it was when I was a kid.

Thanks for the review. I’m looking forward to seeing Tomorrowland even more now.

I didn’t know drive-ins still exist. When I was a kid, my folks would hide me and my sister under a blanket in the back seat of the Rambler station wagon to save a couple of bucks. Flash forward a few years, and I’m working at a drive-in, and found out they didn’t care if people snuck in because the odds were that those who snuck in were going to buy popcorn and soda at the concession stand anyway.

The De Anza Drive-In — alas now defunct — in Tucson, Arizona, where I once worked. They used to show Blazing Saddles once a year, which was always a blast. The night I saw It’s Alive! (1974) there remains one of the highlights of my movie-going life. That was one rowdy crowd. A new type of windowpane acid was going around town, and a lot of folks there that night were tripping on it. I know me and my pals were. Without an easily searchable database of screen shots he could, hypothetically, use this as an opportunity to lay low for a while, mature as a human being and eventually redefine himself.

HAHAHA LOL who am I fucking kidding that will never happen.

Personally I’m pretty immature at times, but my own take is that if your’e going to try to successfully pull off shit like that you’ve got to be prepared to throw long into a super hyperbolic trucker rant. And by that I mean just talk about queefing and all kinds of insanely really graphic detail for like fifteen minutes straight. Which, frankly, isn’t what Twitter is set up to accomplish.

I can feel you pulling away from me …

I don’t know what world you live in, but that wasn’t a personal attack. You’ll know if I’m attacking you personally because it won’t be passive aggressive in the least. You’re ascribing innuendo to me that there’s no evidence of, especially since I explained in detail what bothered me about the stupid troll.

You seemed to think my dislike had something to do with some sort prudish of aversion to “icky and gross lesbian sex”—you were wrong.

I thought what that troll said was trashy, crude, not even remotely funny (for reasons already stated). You thought it was funny. That you found it amusing reminded me in no uncertain terms that no matter how many things you & I agree on, no matter how well we get along 99% of the time, we still have completely different world views—nothing more, nothing less.

You can accept my explanation, or you can read some other stuff into it and hold a grudge (or be disappointed in me or whatever). I have no control over which option you choose.

We’ve had many conversations on much more explosive and delicate topics with much more mutual respect. I don’t know why a crude joke should have changed that. Anyhoo, I give this matter a rest. re: #338 Nyet

Yo, it’s over.

Well, sort of, heh.

I’m glad you’re still here because after figuring out what it was that bothered me so much, I came back to try to explain things better, why it’s not really trivial to me. Hopefully, you’ll try to understand.

Muslim women, especially women who wear hijab, are often used as a weapon against Muslim men and against Islam in general because they are the most easily identifiable & vulnerable symbols of Islam. I don’t doubt that there are non-Muslims who genuinely care about the things some Muslim women endure (lack of equality, domestic violence, FGM, forced marriage. etc.), but there are also a lot of people who DON’T care about it.

I’m talking about the people who dislike Muslims period, hate them even. People who especially enjoy saying ugly things about Muslim women, belittling them, objectifying them—in short, stripping them of their individuality & basic human dignity—as a way of showing their hatred of Islam. This can be witnessed every single day because there are a frightening number of those people out there.

So yeah, when I see some Twitter troll claiming to be a lesbian Muslim and then using “hijabis” as a weapon in a vulgar way, it pisses me right the hell off. Call it my “hijabi trigger” or whatever.

FWIW, I skimmed through that troll’s timeline and I have my doubts that it’s even really a female, much less a lesbian Muslim one.

That is all.

And values may change. But basic respect for the humanity of others doesn’t, whether you agree with them or not, and women have been on the receiving end of hate, including self-hate, for far too long by idealizing the male perspective in all areas of our lives, to one degree or another, whether political, social, economic. It’s a survival tactic only because we haven’t access to the tools to do otherwise, except slowly and incrementally, depending on where we are in the world, and even then, sometimes merely step into the shoes of men.

I want more men to think like women, and not vice versa.

See my #288, above. I think that makes it pretty clear what I dislike about it. It cheapens intimate moments and—if this ShariaBolshevik is indeed a Muslim lesbian, and not some 50 year-old male pervert—then I doubt her past hijabi lovers would like it much either.

But like I said to Sergey, that’s just me—you guys can joke however you want, and I reserve my right to say I don’t think it’s funny.

That makes you more mature than most people, CL. these days, it seems like all the demands are in the vein of “Laugh at what I find funny and ban that which offends me!”. You, on the other hand, have your ego under control and your sense of perspective intact. And that makes me glad to know you.

Our state supreme court is a fucking clown show.

Crooks says Roggensack threatened to throw justices off cases

Days before three state Supreme Court justices skipped ceremonies to admit new lawyers to the bar, Justice N. Patrick Crooks accused newly elected Chief Justice Patience Roggensack of breaking court rules by threatening to throw him off a case without any authority.

Crooks and another justice also contended Roggensack had violated court rules by scheduling a conference to discuss three cases without the permission of all seven justices, emails between the justices show.

The exchanges are the latest sign of turmoil on a court that has drawn national attention for infighting. Their disputes have been on public display in recent weeks because of a fight over who should run the court.

Former Chief Justice Shirley Abrahamson sued the other justices a day after voters approved an amendment to the state constitution allowing members of the court to choose the chief justice. Before that, the job went to the longest serving member of the court.

Though I’d expect Harry Reid to get a large share of the attacks as well, being a senator from Nevada as he is and having many connections in Las Vegas as he does. Although in my mind Reid’s union connections would justify going after Adelson if the Triads really are involved. Given the history of unions being corrupted by organized crime, one cannot blame political leaders from wanting to keep such criminal organizations as far away from the unions they support as possible.

For months now, America Rising has sent out a steady stream of posts on social media attacking Mrs. Clinton, some of them specifically designed to be spotted, and shared, by liberals. The posts highlight critiques of her connections to Wall Street and the Clinton Foundation and feature images of Democrats like Senator Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts and Mayor Bill de Blasio of New York, interspersed with cartoon characters and pictures of Kevin Spacey, who plays the villain in “House of Cards.” And as they are read and shared, an anti-Clinton narrative is reinforced.

America Rising is not the only conservative group attacking Mrs. Clinton from the left. Another is American Crossroads, the group started by Karl Rove, which has been sending out its own digital content, including one ad using a speech Ms. Warren gave at the New Populism Conference in Washington last May.

A classic old (1953?) field quality SxS 12 gauge. 30” barrels, full & im chokes, twin triggers for simplicity & reliability, almost no metal finish left but it locks up tight and should still be good for bunny, squirrel & (with appropriate expensive non-steel non-toxic shot) mallard chasing. Looking forward to the fall now :) and maybe some trap till then.

Wascally Wabbit.

Cost more than it’s worth for a pro job. I’ll probably heat the barrels in the oven to about 120 ~ 150 degrees and use a good cold blue solution on them myself.

Should work, just be careful. Though I presume you’ve done this sort of thing before. If I tried it I’d end up putting on two coats of the stuff, perfectionist that I am.

Can the Republican’s do a fair fight any longer, or is spreading bull their only way anymore?

I know for a long time it has been called ‘political games’ but then after the games were over, sometimes things actually got done.

Now, all games all the time. And nothing gets done.

And if Hillary or even Elizabeth Warren fight back, guess where it goes?

Yep, Women should be above the fray and not be shrews.

And oh yeah, fuck Karl Rove. Pond scum serves more purpose.

Claire McCaskill did the same thing when she used ads and outside money to get Todd Akin the GOP nomination to face her in the 2012 Missouri Senate election. Akin of course, promptly shit the bed with his “legitimate rape” comments and handed her the election on a silver platter.

Like it or not, getting the other side to turn on its candidates is a legitimate election tactic. Straight engagement on the issues doesn’t work very well at this stage of the game since there is no clear Republican front-runner, whereas Hillary Clinton is the obvious Democratic favorite. And if you’re the front-runner the other side targets you.

Yep. It often requires a couple of coats, depending on how bad the old finish is. This case, probably will need a couple easily. Still, it’s a nice old hunting gun that I can use for anything I’d be interested in doing in Wisconsin, even deer with slugs if my should feels up to it ;)

There is no clear Republican front runner because the GOP is a freaking mess and not even their own people like them. Never forget the GOPs polling numbers in their own party.

I swear Dark, bullshit is all the party has. Well, that and a pack of not-ever-ready-for-prime-time candidates.

If they were ever to engage in actually debate of issues they’d get killed. They know the state they are in and guys like Rove is their only answer. And even he is a bad answer as he has not done so well lately. It is all they know and they have no way of changing.

But if that is their tactic, well good luck with it, because it is hollow and won’t work. This country has a need for real statesmen and all the GOP party offers is clowns.

In a way I see them admitting they have nothing for Hillary. It is just their way to try to get more progressives/moderates/liberals to not give her support and get many to stay home in the elections.

Wow, that sure is good for the country.

Finished up Into the Dalek yesterday as well.

The biggest thought I had about the episode was that the Doctor is so damaged after the Time War, that he is simply unable to deal with the Daleks without pure hate. I do take a lesson from it, that hate will not get the result you want.

I do wonder how the episode would have played out if the Doctor and Clara had switched places. She going down to talk to the Dalek, and the Doctor rebooting the memory.

Yes, but Twitter is all about the clicks.

As someone pointed out here yesterday, Deray generates more business for Twitter than that punk from Fresno does. Way more, and he’s a positive model, at that.

Even oblivious Twitter is looking at this situation and thinking ‘do we side with a bona fide media sensation with a brain and a purpose, or a floor shitter who doxxes innocent people and re-tweets neo-Nazis?’

Even Twitter can’t miss the writing on that wall.

That may be, but a lot of folks who adhere to a Wahabbist/Salafist mindset will dismiss the Ottomans because - quite bluntly - they weren’t Arabs.

One thing I’ve noticed with their mentality is a strong degree of ethnocentrism - they’re suspicious of folks like me as well. You know…..only Arabs can be true Muslims, that kind of crap.

Quick yard question. I have a 3” drain pipe along the front of my yard by the sidewalk. I’m looking at putting a raised bed across the entire width of the yard for vegetables and flowers, but want to know the best way to deal with the drain pipe. Obviously covering it isn’t advisable. Should I just cut a notch in my box around it? Or should I put a break in the raised beds so I have a small bed (50”x60”x12”) on one side of it and two larger beds stretching the other 24’ across the yard? Figuring 8’x50”x12” each.

That would give me something like this.

Dunno, but would #1 option give you more access to the beds, which you might want once you get them working?

Probably. I think going with multiple beds is what I’ll do.

Deray is pretty much an open book. He’s talked about being gay, about his parents abuse of drugs and alcohol; his mother leaving him and his sibs when they were very young, and his father & grandmother raising him.

His background isn’t so much different than a lot of young people’s.

I respect the hell out of that guy.

The network he’s built up is a textbook example of using social media for good.

There is really isn’t a Turkish Community in the Central part of the US. Maybe that will change over time, especially in the Turkish Economy falters, or Erdogan gets worse.

Ahh, Erdy.

I think he wants to be proclaimed Sultan or something. He’s becoming increasingly authoritarian, and were it within my power, I’d like to see the CHP (Republican People’s Party) take the reins of Turkey for awhile. AKP’s been at the helm long enough.

To the AKP’s credit, they gave Turkey a good economic boost. Now it’s time to let others build on that. One-party states make me uncomfortable.

Afternoon gang here from a cool (67*) and rainy Tennessee. Glad to see that upChuck is still banned on twitter. Maybe it’s going to really stick this time. Don’t know what to do with myself today. Might go catch the bargain show of Mad Max late this afternoon.

Any suggestions?

Blocked. Which is something I did, for myself. His account is still there. (I got confused when I looked and it said ‘blocked’.)

The really funny thing here is if he just rode out the first suspension, he’d probably get his old account back.

Every sock tips the scales towards a perma-ban, but he’s too busy throwing a tantrum to figure this out.

OK {sigh}, I reported Upchuck again.

No, I think he’s done after 4 suspensions. And you’re right, the sockpuppets aren’t helping.

re: #544 Dr Lizardo

I was cheerfully accepted by Turkish Muslims, be they Sufi or more mainstream Sunni - even Alevis, of course, and Shi’ite.

Arab Muslims, well…….they always gave me the side-eye, LOL. They probably thought I was an intelligence services agent or something. Fortunately, in Berlin Kreuzberg, the majority of Muslims are Turkish, and they’re pretty welcoming. Of course, there’s the Milli Görüs bunch, but I tended to steer clear of them. They’re a little……….intense.

Your comment raises something I’ve been wondering about. How many Americans realize there are many different denominations of practitioners of Islam?

Most Americans lump all things into a nice tight little package of Muslim. And when they aim their hate, it is to the entire group.

Yet, many Americans practice what they call Christianity under a million different denominations, even having certain groups they hate and call trouble makers for all Christians.

This goes to what I said many months ago…I think an education of all the ins and outs of Islam is needed in this country. I am not sure how you teach people something they already seem to have all the ideas they need, but I have a feeling a little knowledge beyond “it is a religion hell-bent on destroying Western peoples and democracies” couldn’t hurt.

Same here. When he’s gone for a few weeks, then I’ll really believe it, and like I said, I wouldn’t be at all surprised if he tries to get back on with another sockpuppet account.

The beauty of the whole thing is that any sockpuppet will be immediately recognizable as upchuck, because he doesn’t report stories—he reports that HE HAS REPORTED stories. He is the lede in all of his reporting, and the prominence of HIM is the most important part.

No actual journalists begins each story with “I am an award-winning journalist.” Only a hack like upchuck does that. His whole “new paradigm of journalism” is based on him being the almighty Oz behind the curtain—except that he wants to be in front of the curtain.

Sucks to be him.

People - not just Americans - view Islam as an essentially monolithic entity, which it certainly is not. There are many different sects within Islam, from extreme to liberal, and they all have differing views.

Sort of like Protestants, quite frankly.

Not many. There is some awareness of the Sunni-Shia split.

But fewer are aware of the 4 major and one minor school of Fiqh among the Sunnis, and that the Shia have 4 of their own.

Almost no one knows about the Ibadi, Alawites, or Alevis.

If you were to mention Sufism, you’d have to add “whirling dervish” to make them get it. Then you’ll hear, “Wait…..they’re Muslims?!”
