A lesson in Twitter usage.

@DaveCullen literally wrote the book about the 1999 Columbine High School massacre, entitled “Columbine.” He used Twitter tonight to talk about taking care of his nephew’s corgi.

I’ve seen people debate what Twitter is for in these comments over the weekend. Some argue that, yeah, Iran’s Green Revolution and The Arab Spring are the real reasons why Twitter exists and how maybe Twitter’s owners see it that way. Or whatever.

Truth be told, the whole internet medium is so new to the human experience that we truly don’t have a good idea/clear picture of how internet and humanity will pan out.

I embrace the good and the bad. Twitter is meant for protesters in Tahir Square to take pictures of oppressive government forces. It’s also meant for corgis and kittehs. That’s just human.

20 wheat-dogghazi-mailgate  May 25, 2015 11:20:33pm

So, there’s going to be a Supergirl TV series this fall, and I just watched the pilot. It wasn’t really impressive, but how many pilots are?

The premise is similar to the Silver Age introduction of Supergirl (Kara Zor-El) in the comics. Kara is Kal-El’s cousin, sent by her parents at age 13 to follow Kal’s spacepod to Earth to care for him. But something goes wrong, and she arrives (still age 13) 24 years after Kal. By that time, he’s already established as Superman. We only see his arm and a glimpse of him flying in the show.

The TV show is set in National City, where Kara Danvers works for a media company led by a “Devil Wears Prada” style boss, played by Calista Flockhart (Ally McBeal) . Kara has been living an ordinary human life until a jetliner with her adoptive sister aboard has an engine explode. Kara saves the plane and “comes out” to the public.

The flying scenes are pretty good.

She tells one co-worker who she is, and James Olsen, who has just moved from Metropolis to work at the same media company, also knows her identity. James (“Jimmy”) is African-American in this incarnation, which might raise some complaints from the usual quarters.

There are super-powered baddies from the Phantom Zone and an Agents of SHIELD-style government agency commissioned to monitor alien activity on Earth. No mention is made of Arrow or The Flash, but Screenrant says the three shows are all in the same DC cinematic universe.

Anyway, I’m hoping it plays well.

Oh, yeah. Her adoptive parents are played by Dean Cain and Helen Slater. Nice touch.

21 goddamnedfrank  May 25, 2015 11:25:57pm

Earlier today the glitch was gone and I was able to make several tweets mentioning @ChuckCJohnson.

Then four hours ago this tweet glitched: twitter.com

Screen Grab

Then, here’s where it gets really interesting. I sent a glitched Tweet to @Shoq, who not only saw it, but retweeted and responded. It’s this one:
twitter.com

You can’t see that, right? Well Shoq did.

Screen Grab

Here’s another screen grab of the conversation @Shoq and I then had about that tweet.

22 goddamnedfrank  May 25, 2015 11:29:41pm

I notice that in today’s versions of the glitch the tweets containing @ChuckCJohnson are also being altered to all lowercase letters (@chuckcjohnson.)

23 teleskiguy  May 25, 2015 11:36:15pm

goddamnedfrank,

Maybe use a hashtag instead of a @ qualifier? UpChuck, after all, is permanently banned.

re: #22 goddamnedfrank

Maybe Twitter’s system still has the account name in its DB as previously used and no longer available for use, to prevent other users from acquiring the handle. I imagine it’s the same process that a phone company uses for unsubscribed phone numbers — they wait about six months before assigning a formerly active number to a new user.

re: #23 teleskiguy

goddamnedfrank,

Maybe use a hashtag instead of a @ qualifier? UpChuck, after all, is permanently banned.

Right, but this rule only seems to be affecting my account, and it’s really weird. Also, I can now prove that it’s being applied semi-randomly and sometimes to tweets after they’ve been made and seen by other people.

For instance, here’s the reply @Shoq made to the glitched tweet I mentioned above:

Now click this URL link to the same tweet:
twitter.com

When you look at that, or when I look at it logged out, it says “This Tweet is unavailable.” -> Referencing my glitched tweet that @Shoq was replying to, because he copied the URL in his reply.

But this is what I see if I load the URL to @Shoq’s reply when I’m logged in.

@Shoq saw my tweet immediately after it was sent. He retweeted it and replied to it.

But now I’m betting he can’t see it at all.

Morning Lizards.

So, I wake up, and to my delight, Chucky’s off Twitter yet again. I have little doubt he’ll try another sockpuppet account - he’s nothing if not obnoxiously persistent. But for the time being, the absence of his vile trolling is welcome.

I look forward to seeing how his lawsuit against Twitter proceeds (snort).

29 Justanotherhuman  May 26, 2015 3:46:37am

Without a legitimate Twitter acct, and a following of just a few dedicated RWNJs on his “news” site, it’s pretty clear that CCJ will never have enough money to launch an actual lawsuit against anyone anyway, much less Twitter.

The Unrealized Defamation Threats of Charles C. Johnson

adamsteinbaugh.com

The “book” about Coolidge CCJ claims he wrote? Hardly believable since anyone with an idea can get plenty of help in getting something published if they can reel in enough suckers to do the job for them. All kinds of semi-literates get books published with help. But I doubt CCJ made enough money from the Coolidge book to set him up for 6 mos. I haven’t read it, but a ghostwriter and decent editor can shape up mostly anything from a puffed up outline of a previously written effort. I think CCJ curried enough favor among a certain few RW people to get his idea into a publishable form for Encounter Books, which had published many other RW personalities and even announced in 2009 it would no longer allow the NYT to review its books due to their “liberal” perspective. However, any effort to access Encounter’s website meets with failure: encounterbooks.com

Enough RW types encouraged this vile person and he’s been the recipient of a lot of wingnut welfare, such as the paid internship at the WSJ (“Robert L. Bartley Fellowship”) and jobs at other RW outlets.

Notice this from Amazon: “Charles C. Johnson is an independent writer. His work has appeared in such publications as The Wall Street Journal, The L.A. Times, City Journal, The New Criterion, Reason, Tablet Magazine, and The Claremont Review of Books, and he has been the recipient of both the Robert L. Bartley Fellowship and Eric Breindel Award at the WSJ, the Robert Novak Award at the Philips Foundation, and the Publius Fellowship at the Claremont Institute. He lives in the San Gabriel Valley with his fiancée and is presently writing a political biography of Barack Obama.”

Where’s the “political biography of Barack Obama”? It’s been 2 yrs already. I suppose he’s alienated the ones who helped him with the Coolidge book?

BTW, GotNews site is down this am.

re: #29 Justanotherhuman

All those folks on the right who encouraged and enabled him added fuel to his delusions of grandeur. Now, it seems, he’s waking up to the reality and his illusions are beginning to crash down around him.

I presume the final blow would be his ‘lawsuit’ against Twitter being thrown out of court, dismissed as frivolous. But who knows? He’ll probably just convince himself that it’s further evidence of a vast, systemic and holistic liberal conspiracy against himself for “daring to speak the truth” or some such twaddle.

Never underestimate the power of self-delusion.

The Coolidge book, I gather, was his graduation paper re-edited for publication. If the tweets I saw have any merit, the paper was more than 560 pages long. His editor(s) must have been very patient people.

And GNDC is still down as of this writing. All I see is a Media Temple Server Default page.

67 CuriousLurker  May 26, 2015 5:49:27am

It’s been a weird morning. I was wiki-walking earlier after reading about super creepy early versions of Little Red Riding Hood:

These early variations of the tale differ from the currently known version in several ways. The antagonist is not always a wolf, but sometimes an ogre or a ‘bzou’ (werewolf), making these tales relevant to the werewolf-trials (similar to witch trials) of the time (e.g. the trial of Peter Stumpp). The wolf usually leaves the grandmother’s blood and meat for the girl to eat, who then unwittingly cannibalizes her own grandmother. Furthermore, the wolf was also known to ask her to remove her clothing and toss it into the fire. In some versions, the wolf eats the girl after she gets into bed with him, and the story ends there. In others, she sees through his disguise and tries to escape, complaining to her “grandmother” that she needs to defecate and would not wish to do so in the bed. The wolf reluctantly lets her go, tied to a piece of string so she does not get away. However, the girl slips the string over something else and runs off. […]

Which led to me looking up Peter Stumpp and werewolf trials. I knew there were witch trials, but had no idea that there was such a thing as a werewolf trials back in the day:

During the early period, accusations of lycanthropy (transformation into a wolf) were mixed with accusations of wolf-riding or wolf-charming. The case of Peter Stumpp (1589) led to a significant peak in both interest in and persecution of supposed werewolves, primarily in French-speaking and German-speaking Europe. Werewolf trials reached Estonia in the 17th century, and would become the most common form of witch-trial in that country. The phenomenon persisted longest in Bavaria and Austria, with persecution of wolf-charmers persisting until well after 1650, the final cases being recorded in the early 18th century in Carinthia and Styria. I’m getting the server default page. It’s possible that repeated DDoS attacks got his domain shut down—when you’re on shared hosting (I don’t know if his site is or not) problems affecting one domain affect everyone, so you could get shut down until things are fixed.

Hope everyone’s Memorial Day was exactly what it needed to be for you.

After graduating High School, I received an appointment to the US Military Academy. I entered into Beast (basic training) in Summer of 1997 with a thousand or so others. Due to numerous circumstances (some) outside my control I was not able to stay at the Academy. My life took different turns, but I kept up with close friends, and tried to remember the names of others over the next few years. That group, whom I would have been a part of, became the Graduating class of the US Military Academy in early summer 2001. Well, we all know the rest of the story of what would be next. I would loose touch with some guys, just because of the nature of what they would now be doing. Some I knew never got close to the Middle East. Some were right in the thick of things. Ever since the start of all military action, I have searched the papers and records for a name I know, added to the needless lives lost. Fortunately, none of the people I considered friends ever ended up on that list, but I did recognize some of the names.
I spent my Monday thinking about some acquaintances of mine who lost their lives in Iraq. And as I did I couldn’t help but think (and I actually yelled out once) FUCK YOU to the entire Bush administration responsible for sending them there. All of the bullshit about the intelligence being wrong is just that- Bull with a capital Shit.

Grandfather Holds Out Hopes That Family Swept in Texas Floods Will Be Found

nbcnews.com

(snip)

“Authorities in the town of Wimberley, Texas, spent Memorial Day searching for Laura McComb, her children Andrew, 7, Leighton, 4, and five members of another family, who were vacationing together when flood waters leveled at least 72 structures in the town Sunday. Four other people in the small town, 30 miles south of Austin, were also missing, according to officials.

(snip)

“McComb said the house, which was on stilts, was swept into a river, and when it hit a bridge “the whole thing started coming apart.”

“The water just took people in different directions,” McComb said. “My daughter-in-law was talking to her sister on the cellphone, saying ‘his house is floating down the river’ — then the conversation just ended.”

*SIGH* POTUS is right:

Why Iraq’s Military Has No Will to Fight

The Obama Administration has run out of patience with Iraq’s Army. On Sunday, Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter appeared on CNN’s “State of the Union” to discuss the recent fall of Ramadi, one of Iraq’s major cities, to ISIS. Despite possessing substantial advantages in both numbers and equipment, he said, the Iraqi military were unable to prevent ISIS forces from capturing the city.

“That says to me and, I think, to most of us, that we have an issue with the will of the Iraqis to fight ISIL and defend themselves.”

Carter’s frustrations are shared by his boss. When asked about the war against ISIS in a recent interview with the Atlantic’s Jeffrey Goldberg, President Obama said that “if the Iraqis are not willing to fight for the security of their country, then we cannot do it for them.” […]

I put 2.40 in the machine and hit the button for the drink. Didn’t come out. I then put 2 quarters in which would have been enough to pay for the drink in all quarters, just in case the machine didn’t take dimes and nickels. Machine still didn’t process by order. So I hit the money return button and got about a dollar back. Not exactly sure how much I put in the machine. However it was between 2.40-3$. I got a dollar back so the machine has roughly 1.40-2 dollars of mine.

Then a year later, he is blogging about his new squeeze, who later became his fiancee and wife. By the time they were seniors, somehow his relationship with the HS sweetheart went way off the rails. It had something to do with a Twitter account mocking him, and her involvement with it, which led to him calling her in his blog a lying, cheating bitch. Then, (the details are murky) she filed a harassment complaint against him with the college. Only his side appears in the blog, of course, but somehow he escaped punishment.

Here is his current thinking (From the COlumbus Business First Site - Morning Roundup blurbs. I didn’t include a link because this is the whole morning blurb.)

Ohio Gov. John Kasich is feeling good about his chances as he mulls a presidential run. WOSU reports Kasich said on ABC’s This Week Sunday morning that he’s happy with his “metrics,” likely based on the money he’s raising. “If we meet our metrics, I’m going to move forward,” Kasich said. “And I have to tell you that I’m increasingly optimistic about all of this.” When asked if he’d consider a spot on another ticket as vice president, Kasich said “I don’t play for second.”

Although the blog was supposedly political in nature, and focused on Claremont-McKenna issues, Chuck shared a lot of personal details that I as a blogger would never share, such as names. CMC is a small school, so many people would probably know who he was talking about anyway, but those names are still out in the open four years after his graduation. Not surprising, but now that there are disaster declarations and rescue and relief efforts will need to be undertaken, and infrastructure rebuilt (like road washouts and dams burst), the same people who complained about funding infrastructure after Sandy will be demanding federal assistance.*

Just you watch.

* with no strings attached - like offsets to the repair bill, lest it slow the pace of aid/rebuilding.

You gotta admit, Obama is devilishly clever — summoning the Kenyan rain god to flood Texas, just he can soften up those people and force them to accept federal money.

For someone who spends his time doxing people online, he’s remarkably sloppy in keeping those two women’s names in the clear.

That’s what Houston and surrounding areas still look like this morning. Where I am in SW Houston, we got 11” of rain in about 6 hours. The bayou we’re on topped about midnight and is still over its banks. The streets are likewise still flooded since there’s just no place for the water to go. Just thought I’d drop some brain bleach in here:

230 lawhawk  May 26, 2015 9:10:19am

So, the Supreme Court will soon be handing down their decision on the ACA, and GOPers are hoping that they’ll be repealing what they’ve failed to do more than 50 times legislatively since 2009.

Except that according to the GOP, the court shouldn’t have the right to do that. The GOP has been on a first class bender when it comes to judicial review and jurisprudence, where they’re claiming that the Court should get out of the business of legislating from the bench.

They’ve tried that tact when it comes to justifying SSM (where the courts have repeatedly viewed SSM as legal and legitimate, including the Supreme Court in Windsor). They’ve tried that tact on abortion. And yet, they’re more than willing to let the court rough roughshod over the ACA, which was legislatively enacted.

So what gives?

Simple. The GOP wants to repeal all the stuff they don’t like and wants the courts to enable them to do so. They want the courts to adhere to GOP worldview, or else they should not pay attention to the courts.

That’s of course not how the government works, but the GOP, and the House GOP in particular, is now populated by people who don’t know how the government works, don’t want to see the federal government works, and are interested in “small” government, which is so small it fits into lady bits, and wont provide for that woman’s health care as it’s more important for the woman to be a embryo/fetus carrier than it is to be a productive member of society (in whatever capacity that woman chooses to be).

Gee, I wonder if there was a reason why Annie made her image all white and heavenly and chose to use the word ‘adios’ in the title. She wasn’t sending any messages to her blockhead readership was she?

Dunham did the “first time” YouTube video for voting for Obama (voting for the first time).

For that she must be forever punished.

That and she is:
1. A woman
2. A woman with an opinion
3. A woman who is kinda powerful
4. A woman

You omitted:

5. A woman who points out the general shittiness of normative views on “beauty”

Duggar Dad’s Political Platform: Incest Should Be Punishable by Death

Jim Bob’s platform on his campaign website—preserved via web cache—states that he believes “rape and incest represent heinous crimes and as such should be treated as capital crimes.” Jim Bob offered this belief to explain his position on abortion (only acceptable if both the mother and the baby were going to die anyway, of course):

Shouldn’t that be “controversial thief and exploiter of women Richard Prince”?

So you’re clever. Does that really make you an artist or an opportunist with no ethics who makes money off the naive and uninformed?

I know Memorial Day 2015 is over, but I wanted to drop this off here anyways. Saw it in my Facebook, posted by a good friend of mine I went to school with. He served two tours in Iraq as a Marine.

@gotnewsdotcom is

SUSPENDED!!!!!

Okay, this surprises me. (I know, I said we should be Chuck free today) I didn’t think he’d be stupid enough to risk the one account that promotes his source of revenue to the point that it, too, would get suspended. Or maybe Twitter decided that the legal letter from Chuck’s attorney was the last straw. Take your suspension like a man and get back on Twitter after an appeal. Threaten to sue and the TOS will bite you in the ass.

Pop culture mud slinging and spite.

Taylor Swift’s ‘Bad Blood’: How we can tell she’s singing about Katy Perry

washingtonpost.com

No sisterhood among the divas?

Can ‘diva’ be used for either of them?

Diva is usually reserved for truly talented female singers that have huge ego issues and want treated like royalty.

I think the ego/queen issue is present, but the ‘talent’ as singers is debatable. Perry would be lost without auto-tuning and Swift is a bit screechy to me.

I give Swift credit though, she at least writes her songs and plays guitar.

And Katy Perry is auto-tuned. When she first came on the scene, I heard her do I Kissed A Girl live (Grammys or some such) and it was horrible. Her voice was horrible and it just sounded like shit.

I don’t especially like either one of them (Perry does have a few good songs) but, like you said, at least Swift writes her own stuff.

good morning Lizards. Hope everyone had a good memorial day weekend.

Hey Dreggas! Many threads back you had mentioned the loss of a beloved pet. My condolences brother.

But guess what, it’s Christmas in May around here with the glorious UpChuck news.

I was using “diva” as a pejorative term.

The teeny-boppers will eat this up, of course and will retreat into their own camps to sling insults at each other.

252 ObserverArt  May 26, 2015 9:35:43am

Later folks…gonna run out and get some errands done, etc. We are supposed to be in line for some storms coming Ohio’s way in a few hours.

Thankfully we aren’t in line for the deluges that hit Texas and Oklahoma. But high winds are in the forecast and I really hate high winds.

253 Dr Lizardo  May 26, 2015 9:36:59am

OK; I just saw the latest trailer for Black Mass, and it looks like Johnny Depp is back in fine form as Whitey Bulger.

Keeping my fingers crossed, but thus far, it looks like it’s gonna be a hell of a good film. No doubt about it, Depp is a very good actor - Blow and Donnie Brasco immediately spring to mind.

Yeah I see that Chuck finally got the boot. A bit of good news after an overall shitty weekend. Not only did I lose my cat but then saturday a buddy of mine took me fishing to cheer me up and I discovered all of my salt water gear as well as catfish rods (all of which are the most expensive with good reels etc) have disappeared out of my garage and appear to have been stolen at some point.
