And Now, Santorum Enters the Clown Car

It’s going to be an all-creationist race on the GOP side
Politics • Views: 33,056
Satan has many faces.

The GOP presidential race is looking a lot like that old circus routine in which dozens of clowns keep climbing out of a tiny car — but in reverse, because the Republicans in this case just keep climbing into the Clown Car. The latest buffoon to elbow his way in: Rick “Man On Dog” Santorum.

CABOT, Pa. — Rick Santorum, who was the runner-up in the Republican primary race four years ago but has never been considered his party’s heir apparent, is announcing his second presidential bid on Wednesday.

A former senator from Pennsylvania, who with his wife home-schooled several of their seven children, Mr. Santorum appeals primarily to social conservatives. He is facing heavy competition for those voters this year from rivals like Senator Ted Cruz of Texas, former Gov. Mike Huckabee of Arkansas and the retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson.

Santorum, of course, is yet another creationist; so far I don’t think there’s a single GOP candidate who isn’t.

Remember, the clown car is bigger on the inside than it is on the outside.

The only limitation on who can enter the clown car is the width of the door and the velocity of the entrant through the door. If they enter fast enough they become an interference pattern on the back wall.

Why does G-d need a spaceship? Why does G-d need such an imperfect vessel as the GOP clown car set?

G-d, it appears, has a sense of humor. Alternatively, he’s speaking to no one, and these people should really should be seeking mental health assistance.

That reminds me of a lunch I had with my wife’s relatives a while back. We were all sitting at this restaurant at a big table. Her family is pretty religious for the most part, some more than others of course. One of the more religious aunts started into this story/movie she had heard/watched about a basketball team. They weren’t really a great team but good enough to get to the championship game and were losing at halftime. She told how the coach made this great halftime speech about how god loved them and would help them through this like he will in hard times that will come later in their life. And of course they went out and won the game in the second half. All the other relatives were like, aww that was nice. So me being me asked her, “Why did god hate the other team?”. Silence from almost everyone except one cousin that snickered.

Another candidate joins the field…and yet nothing really changed. Seriously, the GOP bench is basically one large, amorphous blob. We’re not looking at a variety of ideas and proposals, it’s just different flavors of the same shit.

- They all oppose amnesty and want to increase deportations
- They all think the problem with our economy is taxes are too high and welfare is too generous
- They all think creationism or some variation of it should be treated as “equal” to evolution
- They all oppose gay marriage, even if some want to punt it back to the states while others want to just tell SCOTUS to fuck off
- They all think we need to get involved in the fighting overseas
- And they all think things were better when your insurance company could boot your ass without warning

Say what you want about the odds of Bernie Sanders winning the nomination, at least there is sunlight between the man and Hillary Clinton.

28 ObserverArt  May 27, 2015 11:44:28am

I was working on a big ol’ comment in the last thread, then Chrome crapped out right as I was posting it. Then by the time I was able to get back to the site a new thread opened. So…I’m going to put it here as it fits the GOP clown car entries.

Thing is, this guy is not a clown…here is the post from the last thread:

I saw upthread some discussion about George Pataki running for president on the fact that he is not as crazy as other GOP candidates.

I swear…keep an eye out for Ohio governor John Kasich. He is positioning himself just as I thought he would. He wants to be The Real Moderate, the un-Walker, The Man with the Real Experience and The Down Home Christian with a Heart.

He was campaigning in Georgia yesterday. Check out some of his “moderate Republican speak” and how he can be quick and in-your-face with his answers:

SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. — The first question from his first Georgia audience was the tough one for John Kasich.

Mike Fitzgerald, chairman of the 6th District GOP, confessed that he’d been “grinding on this” during the Ohio governor’s speech here on Tuesday.

Fitzgerald noted that the possible Republican presidential candidate had expanded Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act. “Is that a sustainable model long-term?” the GOP activist asked.

Kasich first noted that his application of Medicaid expansion to prisoners and the mentally ill actually would save his state money in the long run.

The Ohio governor then fell back on biography.

“I was chairman of the (House) Budget Committee when we balanced the federal budget,” he said. “I took Ohio from an $8 billion hole to a $2 billion surplus. If the federal government fools around and changes the formula, I’ve told the people in the state we’ll get out of it. I’m not going to let my budget be put into a hole.”

But in the end, Kasich sounded a note that Georgia Republicans have heard only rarely. “My (other) choice in that decision was to ignore some of the most vulnerable people in our population,” the governor said. “I’ve been criticized for this decision. Do you think it bothers me? It doesn’t.”

Later in the day, Kasich met with potential financial backers in Atlanta, and he closed out his post-Memorial Day adventure in Georgia with a rain-soaked barbecue on a farm near Monroe.

Among those waiting for him was Phil Neff of Dalton, who said he has watched Kasich “since he was a congressman in Ohio.”

Neff wasn’t bothered by the Medicaid expansion.

“The money’s out there. Georgia’s going to be on board very quickly,” Neff said — a reference to a Medicaid “experiment” that Gov. Nathan Deal is pursuing.

Interest in Kasich was high throughout the day. In Sandy Springs, he nearly packed the house, with an audience that included longtime GOP strategist Ralph Reed and Georgia Secretary of State Brian Kemp.

“(Kasich) will make a great president if we can get him that far,” said Sandy Springs Mayor Rusty Paul, who once worked for the late Jack Kemp when Kemp was secretary of Housing and Urban Development.

That was from this Columbus Dispatch article: Dispatch - Critics of Medicaid expansion don’t bother him, Kasich tells Georgia GOP

And in this bit…he goes right after Wisconsin’s Walker:

SANDY SPRINGS, Georgia - Gov. John Kasich says he still believes Ohio doesn’t need a right-to-work law, even though he last week rescinded union rights for roughly 15,000 health-care and child-care workers.

The governor’s increasingly moderate stance on unions had drawn criticism from fellow Republicans - whom he’s courting as he explores a possible bid for president.

Kasich largely backed down from anti-union stances after a statewide referendum in 2011 overturned Senate Bill 5, which limited the collective bargaining rights of Ohio’s public employees. Meanwhile, other possible 2016 presidential candidates such as Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker have embraced right-to-work measures.

But Kasich last fall downplayed the importance of passing right to work in Ohio, saying CEOs rarely bring it up when they’re considering locating a business in the state. And, he says, he still believes that.

“We don’t have any disruptive labor situations” in Ohio, so a push for right-to-work isn’t necessary, he told an Enquirer reporter on the sidelines of a 2016-related luncheon in Georgia, itself a right-to-work state.

That was from this cincinnati.com article: John Kasich on campaign trail: No need for right-to-work law

I think he is running. He is just letting the money men get a early view of how bad the rest of the field is and how they are not ready for prime time and he will sell himself as the stable guy that won’t say stupid stuff.

He is slick. Keep your eyes on him. He is the dangerous candidate. Add in the GOP convention is in Cleveland and it is perfect for the Ohio guy to get the nomination. He will kill Scott Walker and the lesser lights. I fear him…and he will give Hillary fits.

The only two of the clowns who have a realistic chance of becoming the candidate are Jeb Bush and Marco Rubio. The GOP don’t need somebody who can win Kentucky or Texas. They need someone who can bring them a swing state and only Rubio and Bush can do that. I don’t think that any of them can beat Hillary, but at least they can put Florida into play. All the other clowns are distraction-creating attention whores.

In my opinion, of course

Thing is, that was what Walker sold himself as and Bush before him: The “sane” moderate who was seen as a viable nominee because he could appeal to the “mushy middle” and possibly strip off some Democrats from Hillary’s margins. And both have fallen victim to the same problem, namely that the demands by the party base to conform to their lunacy has left them unable to maneuver at all. I don’t see Kasich really doing much better than joining the chorus of those trying to sell themselves as the “sane” choice.

If ya think I’m wrong, consider how many folks made similar predictions about the political titan that was Rick Perry in 2012. Hell, even I bought into the idea for a while that he was gonna jump in, rule the debates, and come out the other side as a serious contender.

IMO Perry lost the nomination in 2012 when he showed some traces of humanity on immigration issues. The other supposed cause (egregiously stupid-seeming debate performance) is manifestly an insufficient explanation. Egregious stupidity hasn’t been a show-stopper for the GOP nomination in decades.

If the GOP had any sense they’d cap the number of people allowed to run for the nomination. After X people have declared, let the rest run as independents or Libertarians or whatever.

It would almost be funny if it wasn’t so stupid and AVOIDABLE.

The GOP are going full steam ahead down the same track that ultimately produced Mitt Romney and a disastrous General in 2012.

It’s the same problem: All the GOP candidates pile in the clown car and desperately try to out crazy one another to win the nomination, pissing off everyone who ISN’T a white Republican (and some who are) in the process.

Thus, they end up totally fucked in the general when they have to run back to the center to try and sway “independents” and “moderates”. Those groups mostly won’t buy into the GOP bullshit and the efforts to reach out to them will even alienate some of the GOP base who see their chosen candidate suddenly become “not Conservative enough to win”.

I don’t even have a degree or experience in politics and I can see this shit coming a mile away. You’d think the GOP advisers could too, yet here we are on the cusp of yet another wingnut battle royale that will result a winner who has no chance of winning the White House short of a miracle

Like I said, it would almost be funny if it wasn’t so damned sad.

Remember, this is one of the two MAJOR POLITICAL PARTIES in the country doing this!

The party will have to moderate to accept him. Notice he picks out ‘prisoners and the mentally ill’ as deserving of his compassion, not poor people, which would get him kicked out of the party. He is a FOX favorite. He’ll make it over their bar. He was one of their saner political commentators before he ran for Governor back in 2010. He has real party cred where others do not and I get a feeling FOX is looking for a sure winner.

I know it is easy to discount these GOP candidates as all clowns, but I think Kasich is a different beast than the Walkers and Rubios. He will make both look like rank amateurs. I think he is that slick and polished. He has been in the political game much longer than the whole contingent so far. And he rarely gets beat, if he has ever been beaten.

Just in case, I am not a supporter of Kasich in any way, Ohio or not. I know how good a politician he really is even if I hate the S.O.B.

re: #41 Eclectic Cyborg

Bear in mind that the GOP leadership also made a declaration last year that they were going to have fewer debates than 2012, in the rather transparent hope that they’d be able to avoid the damage done to their favored candidate this go-around. But they’ve since committed to virtually the same number of debates, even though they’ve tried to maintain some manner of quality control by putting them on channels or with moderators favorable to their party.

Either way, it’s gonna be an utter bloodbath. We very well might see what we figured could happen in 2012, namely a contested nomination and a fight at the convention over who has enough delegates and the loyalty of delegates to a particular candidate.

The party will have to moderate to accept him. Notice he picks out ‘prisoners and the mentally ill’ as deserving of his compassion, not poor people, which would get him kicked out of the party. I think my governor went for the Medicaid expansion because she believed if she didn’t she’d go to hell. If Kasich does get nominated, maybe Susana would be his running mate.

Wrench…Kasich has already used the “poor and needy” and how he also didn’t want to be judged as a Christian that didn’t allow the expansion. That was only one article from yesterday.

And, like I said, everybody was saying the same thing about Goodhair in 2012. He was slick, smart, connected, and he had his finger on the pulse of the “common man.” He was gonna be the mark to beat in the primaries and we’d better start thinking how we were gonna deal with him in the general election. Then he showed a moment of humanity on the subject of immigration and his stock smashed through the floor and tunneled its way to China.

With federal funds, of course; and if anyone tries to demand offsets, they’ll be castigated for not getting aid to where it’s needed in a timely basis.

Let’s just ignore that the GOP delayed Sandy reconstruction aid by months and fought to try and get offsets - meaning that for every dollar of emergency aid, the GOP was demanding a dollar cut elsewhere in federal spending.

Thing is, that was what Walker sold himself as and Bush before him: The “sane” emoderate who was seen as a viable nominee because he could appeal to the “mushy middle” and possibly strip off some Democrats from Hillary’s margins.

Grand Jury votes to indict Justin Craven

wrdw.com

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — An Edgefield County grand jury has indicted a North Augusta police officer on a felony charge in the death of a driver shot after a long chase.

The grand jury handed up an indictment Wednesday on a charge of discharging a firearm into an occupied vehicle, which carries up to 10 years in prison. The indictment came nine months after a grand jury refused to indict Justin Craven on a voluntary manslaughter charge.

Authorities say Craven chased 68-year-old Ernest Satterwhite for a dozen miles to his driveway in February 2014. Investigators say Craven fired several shots through Satterwhite’s car door almost immediately after he stopped. Craven told authorities Satterwhite reached for his gun. More

The real race for the nomination is between a handful of candidates for the support of the establishment. I learned this in 2012 when I didn’t think it possible that the architect of Romneycare could win the GOP nomination, but he did anyway. Charles called it perfectly when he said early on that the nomination was Romney’s.

For those who missed it, PaleoPat ran a column on the results of that Pew survey from a couple of weeks back. It’s pretty much what you’d expect, with some real winners thrown in:

The Decline of Christian America

“On the old and new continents, it is the native-born of European ancestry who are de-Christianizing, aging and dying. And the nations they created are the ones depopulating.

To occupy Rome, the barbarians came from the east and north. To occupy the West, they are coming from the south. And like the Romans of the fourth century, we seem paralyzed and powerless to stop them.”

The sort of multi-dimensional racism that is on exhibit here takes some skill and training. PaleoPat knows exactly what he is doing.

Besides the fake history, he goes on:

“Christianity was the founding faith of the West. That faith and the moral code and culture it produced once united this disparate and diverse nation and civilization.”

PaleoPat lives in an alternate world if he thinks Europe was united.
