Scott Walker Tells Dana Loesch Mandatory Ultrasounds Are ‘Just a Cool Thing’

All the chicks dig them. They’re groovy.

Displaying an amazingly horrible tin ear and that casual misogyny for which the Republican Party has become well-known, Gov. Scott Walker, a probable presidential candidate, says that government-mandated ultrasound examinations for women seeking abortions are “just a cool thing.”

“I’ll give you an example. I’m pro-life, I’ve passed pro-life legislation. We defunded Planned Parenthood, we signed a law that requires an ultrasound. Which, the thing about that, the media tried to make that sound like that was a crazy idea. Most people I talk to, whether they’re pro-life or not, I find people all the time who’ll get out their iPhone and show me a picture of their grandkids’ ultrasound and how excited they are, so that’s a lovely thing. I think about my sons are 19 and 20, you know we still have their first ultrasound picture. It’s just a cool thing out there.

“We just knew if we signed that law, if we provided the information, that more people if they saw that unborn child would, would make a decision to protect and keep the life of that unborn child.”

This is a beautiful illustration of why it’s vitally important that Republicans be voted out of office in every part of American life. They’re completely lost in a fantasy world in which rolling back all the progress this country has made in women’s rights is “just a cool thing.”

It’s not. It’s not cool. It’s dangerously reactionary and stupid.

Bates Family ‘Praying’ For Friends The Duggars

Following the molestation allegations against Josh Duggar, and advertisers pulling out of TLC’s “19 Kids and Counting,” the Bates Family are praying for their friends, the Duggar family.

The Bates family, stars of “Bringing Up Bates” on UpTv, issued a statement, when Access Hollywood asked for comment on Wednesday.

“We are praying for our dear friends,” the statement from Gil and Kelly Jo Bates read. “We respect their privacy and have no further comment at this time.”

The Bates family previously appeared on “19 Kids and Counting.” They also previously had their own show on TLC - “United Bates of America.”

Dear Scott,

You don’t mind if I call you Scott, right?

Let’s make one thing clear: I do not consider it a “cool thing” to have someone completely unconnected to my medical care decide that I need a medically unnecessary procedure - a procedure that, in any other context, occurring without my consent, would be classified as sexual assault.

I have other words for that.

Thanks (and still never going to vote for you),

Just to be fair, I think that a cystoscopy should be required of all men wanting a prescription for ED. We just need to check to see if anything is wrong, that’s all.

Should also be a requirement to get a prescription refilled.

re: #22 Lord Of The Pies

Why is Dana suddenly so upset about “fake quotes” when she used fake quotes in her gun-fucking book.

Dear Dana:

Loesch:

“A free people ought to be armed.” - George Washington

Actual Quote:

“A free people ought not only to be armed, but disciplined; to which end a uniform and well-digested plan is requisite; and their safety and interest require that they should promote such manufactories, as tend to render them independent of others for essential, particularly military, supplies.”

The version appearing in Loesch’s book crops language from Washington’s quote that made it clear he was talking about the creation of a national defense strategy.

mediamatters.org

etc., etc., etc.

35 Charles Johnson  May 27, 2015 5:13:12pm

And Loesch even says it herself, straight up:

Anyone with the reading comprehension of a dolphin knows that Walker was specifically describing ultrasound images, not the legislation itself — which yes, it is cool that women seeking an abortion as a form of birth control must think and see the life they are ending before ending it.

These people are just completely delusional at this point. They’re gone.

Okay Dana, he did not say that the forced ultrasound was cool. Conceded. What he did, though, was casually conflate ultrasound pics/procedures from people that consented to said ultrasound, and those pictures that would presumably come from people that are being forced to have an ultrasound. It’s equally disgusting and misleading. He’s suggesting that the person who doesn’t want the ultrasound and doesn’t want to carry to term will nevertheless think it’s a “cool thing” that they have the picture.

46 lawhawk  May 27, 2015 5:21:13pm

Mandatory ultrasounds - the cost of which are borne by the woman who seeks an abortion. Adding to the cost of health care by mandating a procedure that is wholly medically unnecessary in most instances.

There is no reason for this procedure to be conducted. It’s supposed to be between the doctor and their patient, but instead the GOP has decided that they know better than the medical community. Way to show your small government credentials by being so small that you can fit up in the lady bits with room to spare for an extraneous and unnecessary medical procedure.

And for all the talk about fiscal responsibility, this procedure is fiscally irresponsible by adding to health care costs for all - but especially for the poor and those in need of an abortion.

That, apparently, trumps all else - add to the costs, make it impossible to get a legal abortion, and the GOP claims victory. Never mind that they’ve committed themselves to dismantling the safety net, wont provide assistance to parents with newborns or kids.

47 BeachDem  May 27, 2015 5:21:30pm

Back from seeing Hillary in Columbia. What fun! Will probably do a page later, when my friends send me all their photos. Just a few highlights:

1. If you watch any footage of her speech, you’ll see that there’s a blonde lady with a white necklace standing beside/behind Hillary. That’s my friend Sally! When we were driving home, her facebook page looked like a ticker tape as people kept commenting about seeing her.

2. Of our particular group of 5, 1 was interviewed by a local MB TV station; 1 by a Charleston station; 1 by a Swedish newspaper and I was interviewed by the New York Times.

3. Our county was the only one Hillary carried in SC in 2008. She remembered, and we got a photo of her with our county Dem Women.

4. She looked great, was very at ease and gave a really positive, “connected” speech. (I don’t know why all the stories are talking about her “drawl.” I didn’t notice it at all.) The speech was at a women’s event, so she talked a lot about pay equality for women, family issues, etc. Totally upbeat—no nastiness (OK, a tiny bit of snark about the clown car) and very positive.

5. She told some funny anecdotes and stories, the best being about how the presidency ages people, and how all of the recent presidents have gone gray/white while in office. She pointed out that that will not happen to her, as she’s been coloring her hair for years and isn’t about to stop.

6. Carly Fiorina was holding a press conference at the Hilton, but I don’t think anyone showed up (they were all at the Marriott for Hillary) so Carly came over and walked up the street where all the press trucks were, and was pretty much ignored there too. While she was trying to make her point, there was one doofus protester walking along with a misspelled BENGHAZI!! sign.

More later…

Pretty much everything expressed in a natural language is ambiguous (which is why computers aren’t programmed in English), so honest conversations take possible ambiguities into account.

I won’t even concede that point. You don’t get to talk about how it’s a great idea to defund Planned Parenthood and have forced ultrasound laws, and then segue right into a story about how “cool” ultrasounds are without it being pointed out that you made a very explicit connection between your forced ultrasounds and how wonderfully cool you think ultrasounds are.

Finally a bit of good news for me today: damage to my car can be repaired fairly easily. My main concern was difficulty in obtaining Saturn parts, but fortunately GM still handles everything I need. Now I don’t have to worry about getting another car ahead of my health forcing me off the road.

I went to a facility that is actually owned by Allstate, and let me tell you…the price quote you get from a body shop that is not strictly in the business of price gouging is amazing. Naturally, the price is still well north of my $500 deductible, but I would be willing to wager I could easily get an estimate elsewhere for 20-40% more.

Real conspiracies can happen.

I’ve been wondering which Republi-crook is Putin’s man in the race. Walker seems a pretty good bet. Given the huge resources available in the conspiracy industry and the Republican base though, Vlad may in fact have more than one candidate in his pocket.

For many years, conservatives in this country turned over every rock and looked under every bed trying to unmask Russian agents of influence. They did a lot of damage but never found much in the way of real agents.

Today, with the communists gone and with Alex Jones’s effusive praise of Putin, and the vast influence of the Russian government outlet rt.com on the American right, real Russian influence on American public life is happening right before our eyes with little notice from anyone.

Is the far right becoming a Russian fifth column? Is the conspiracy industry and its strike arm, the militia movement, orchestrated from the Kremlin? The American far right militias, for example, are a close analog of the kind of irregular forces Putin likes to use in Ukraine and other places.

I know liberals and leftists are averse to such thinking for obvious historical reasons but the evidence against alleged communist “agents of influence” in the 40s and 50s was as nothing compared to the current Russian regime’s real, obvious influence over the right wing in this country.

Image of a 1976 (or so) 35mm slide off the scanner. No particular additional work done on it, just some dust coverup the scanner will do by default. The image is at 10% of the full scan image I get from doing 1200dpi. I could probably save space by cutting that, but I think I’d rather scan “big” and then reduce later if I need to. I don’t think the slight blur is due to the scan, it wasn’t taken in clear focus in the first place.

Subjects are the family cat (the black one) and a intruding other cat from a few blocks away (the white one). They were settling down to a howling match when a neighbor’s dog wandered by. So the cats went up the same tree and split their time between hissing and spitting at the dog and each other.

Perhaps so, but the huge popularity of rt.com on the far right is quite real. It may be more effect than cause but it obviously plays a role in focusing far right thought. At the very least it is alarming that so many Americans will slavishly take the word of a foreign propaganda site, no matter how far-fetched or improbable, over that of their own government, media, academic community or even, in some cases, the experience based testimony of their own neighbors

Hey everyone…

Had to run up north for a night to check on my dad, who is 80 and was hospitalized for a couple of days due to a heart scare. He was released from the hospital yesterday a few hours before I got up to their house, and when I arrived he was sitting in the front porch with a glass of scotch and a cigar. :) So much for death’s door. Mom had her usual glass of wine. I visited with them for a while, got a good night’s sleep, and then this morning he got his portable monitor. Comes with a mobile phone that transmits his heart data automatically to a site in Virginia. Also has a manual feature where he can send a thirty second scan if he feels dizzy…happened once before I left. Pretty interesting shit. I noticed the mobile phone part didn’t have his name displayed so I called the 800 number and got him properly activated, so they’re actually getting his readings now.

It sucks watching your parents get old.

I posted this message on a Sanders Facebook page:

“But won’t Bernie feed puppies and kittens to the Castro brothers at White House dinners? Use confiscated Bibles to fuel his armored train (See “Zhivago, Doctor—-Strelnikov”)? Force school kids to pray to Cthulu? Also, where does he hide his horns and tail? Sorry if these are old questions. I’m just going by what the Republican radio commentators tell us.”

Looks like I wasn’t exaggerating by much, if at all.

Looks good! Which scanner are you using?

Epson V600.

Just got a real dusty sky shot. Need to get some canned air and see if that can be cleaned up before scanning again. Also will use this “block” of slides to pick out 12 or so as a test suite to play with more settings on.

Autofocus, digital, etc. etc. has spoiled me a bit. Seeing stuff here that is blurry, exposed a bit wrong, exposed unevenly, and so forth. But these were taken with a 60s-era manual camera, and probably not that high end of one at that. Plus 40+ years of aging on the slides themselves.

Good news. :)

Some people balk when I refer to the US Right and the GOP as ‘proto-fascist’. I can’t see why.

It is indisputable that full-fledged fascism is there at the fringes, and that the GOP is steadily getting more extreme.

The end result is obvious, unless the GOP radically changes course.

Not all the GOP is proto-fascist, but I think the anti-immigrants are getting there.

The xenophobes are the clearest example, but I think it goes significantly further than that.

1) The fiscal conservatives are getting closer and closer to “useless mouths” rhetoric every year.

2) The social conservatives and xenophobes are busily seeking scapegoats (gays and Muslims).

3) The increasing reliance on tribal loyalties and symbolism instead of any rational arguments is also telling. If a video of Obama were shown at the 2016 GOP convention, the two-minute hate of 1984 would immediately occur.

re: #58 Shiplord Kirel

I honestly believe you’re on to something!

147 teleskiguy  May 27, 2015 6:44:12pm

The notebook also has him expounding on the pros and cons of a bombing, biological warfare, serial murder, or mass murder. He chose the latter then expounded on the pros and cons of an airport or a movie theater.

Getting religion out of politics has the useful side effect of reducing the tendency to view political opponents as a literal anti-Christ (or equivalent).

The Republicans have spoiled this by turning their politics into a religion (a particularly primitive and obnoxious cult, one might add).

The trouble with you, Spode, is that just because you have succeeded in inducing a handful of half-wits to disfigure the London scene by going about in black shorts, you think you’re someone. You hear them shouting “Heil, Spode!” and you imagine it is the Voice of the People. That is where you make your bloomer. Chuck has coordinated with a handful of fellow lunatics (Shannon, Weev, maybe a bunch of random schmoes) and is going to compose a series of tweets that said schmoes will all post at the same time.

More to the point, the reason an intra-vaginal wand is necessary is because the “human” can’t be found externally. WAY too small and undeveloped.

If the definition of human death is the lack a functional brain (so we don’t become vivisectionists for transplanted organs), then why isn’t this a reasonable working definition of human life?

Oh, we’ve let people whose morality is based on the tribal history of a small population in the Middle East, which is God’s Truth, AND the teachings of a heretic to the first group, who had him killed by the Romans, which are also God’s Truth, seize our political discourse.

Ambulatory cesspit Charles Murray sets forth a wingnut wet dream:

The emergence of many billion-dollar-plus private fortunes over the last three decades,” Murray writes, “has enabled the private sector to take on ambitious national or even international tasks that formerly could be done only by nation-states.” Murray’s most ambitious proposal is a legal defense fund, which “could get started if just one wealthy American cared enough to contribute, say, a few hundred million dollars,” that would essentially give that wealthy American veto power over much of U.S. law. […]

The federal government, Murray claims, cannot enforce the entirety of federal law “without voluntary public compliance.” Federal resources are limited, and only a small fraction of these limited resources have been directed towards enforcement. Thus, Murray argues, by simply refusing to comply with the law and contesting every enforcement action in court, regulated entities can effectively drain the government’s resources and prevent it from engaging in meaningful enforcement.

As a pointed reminder to those who think the GOP is in any way defensible, let it be noted that supposedly moderate Jeb Bush is a Charles Murray fanboy.

So is this:

The open-carry bill, inches from the finish line, was derailed Wednesday by law enforcement objections to language limiting the ability of police to stop and question those with a gun.

Passed by both houses, House Bill 910 was back in the House, where its author urged representatives to send it to Gov. Greg Abbott by agreeing to changes made by the Senate.

What is typically a quick vote with little discussion, however, broke down into an intense debate over an amendment that bars police from stopping somebody with an openly displayed handgun solely to check for a concealed handgun license.

It’s so weird that cops want the ability to ensure that an openly armed yahoo is licensed to carry a gun. Don’t they know that only good guys open carry?

214 goddamnedfrank  May 27, 2015 9:00:58pm

re: #211 Lidane

The amendment has had a busy history. It was added in the House by Rep. Harold Dutton, D-Houston, as protection for minorities who, he argued, would be more likely to be detained by police.

He’s a clown but he’s right. Just illustrates how open carry is a bad idea from the get go though. If you can’t trust your police to enforce it in a colorblind fashion and your only solution is to make them turn a blind eye to everyone openly packing heat, never stopping them without articulable suspicion of why they might not have a permit, maybe the entire idea of letting people openly pack heat in public just sucks.

Remember Amber Vinson, the nurse who contracted Ebola, and was the victim of a vicious smear campaign by Chuck C?

As a part of her diagnosis, she provided blood samples to a biotech lab in hopes that an effective treatment for the virus could be developed.

That lab succeeded - and have pledged to not profit from it, and to make the results of the project readily available to anyone.

Blood from Dallas nurse used to create anti-Ebola drug

“Our technology offered us the ability to develop a curative therapy to a deadly disease that was ravaging nations and even threatened us here at home,” said John Simard of XBiotech. “It offered the potential to develop a therapy with unparalleled speed.”

XBiotech has a unique approach to curing disease. It uses real biological material to make new drugs by replicating the antibodies developed by survivors. These are true human antibodies, rather than chemically-manufactured ones.

Once the antibody material is cloned, the company grows the antibodies using a biological process.

“We’re going ahead with this project on the basis of making the [resulting] drug available to everyone, one way or another,” Simard said.

Just as Vinson donated her blood, the company pledges not to take a profit on any vaccine that is derived from it. Depending on where the drug is used, there may be different rules in approving it for use, Simard said.

The Boy Scouts were doomed the moment the national leadership decided to preserve the organization at the cost of the values and ideals that gave it birth. Speaking to a national meeting of Boy Scouts of America leaders, President Robert Gates, former Secretary of Defense and former Director of the Central Intelligence Agency, called for the B.S.A. to abandon its policy of allowing the participation of openly gay scouts, but not the involvement of openly-gay adults.

[…]

What Gates did not mention was the fact that the inclusion of openly gay leaders and scouts, along with the challenge that already comes from the feminism and and transgender advocates, makes the very existence of the Boy Scouts ever more vulnerable.

In the comments, another factoid about Murray I hadn’t heard before. (What a charmer that guy is—no wonder he’s such a hero to some on the right.)

As City Pages editor Steve Perry wrote back in the last century:

Near the end of his high school days in Newton, Iowa, Murray and some of his pals went out one night and burned a cross next door to the police station.

To my knowledge, the reams of coverage accorded Murray for his pseudo-scientific apologia on behalf of racism have produced only two mentions of this incident. One was in a 1994 New York Times Magazine profile, the other a bit later on the Donahue show.

In both instances Murray protested that he had no idea as to the racial significance of cross-burning. There were only two black families in Newton in those days, an old school chum of his added in the Times piece.

Well. As it happens, I grew up just 30 miles away from Murray’s central Iowa hometown, in an even smaller farming town with no black families at all. But somehow I managed to learn what cross-burning meant by the time I finished high school, and I expect Murray did too.

Recommend not even responding to this shit via twitter unless for some reason they don’t ban the new account within a day or two. Shannon is parsing a very thin line here. It’s his website / blog, she’s his employee / minion / lackey / research punk / whatever. She’s trying to restore his voice’s access to Twitter, immediately after they banned several of his accounts.

248 The War TARDIS  May 27, 2015 9:56:07pm

Well, here’s a theory that would be interesting for Doctor Who.

That the Missy will end up taking over Clara, and “killing” her, with the Master wearing her body as a suit of sorts.

This happened in the TV Movie in 96, and with Trema during the very, very end of the 4th Doctor era.

I am not sure Moffat would pull that. He may have a reputation for knocking off characters, but this seems dark even for him. That would be George Martin territory.

Not to mention, Doctor Who has a very sizable kiddie audience.

249 The War TARDIS  May 27, 2015 9:58:16pm

Also, Series 9 will be all 2-Parters. Apparently, Moffat felt the need for a shift.

Let’s hope it doesn’t go back to the 5-7th Era, with the no hugs or touching policies under Turner, who helped kill the show.

I like my Sci-Fi to keep the human and emotional element. On this, I am prickly.

Remember, some of the final words of the 11th Doctor:

But times change, and so must I.

Right now, Doctor Who is expanding outside of Britain at increasing speed, especially in the US.

I rather like Twelve’s approach, namely keeping Clara and others at arm’s length. Makes a lot of sense that a man whose big storylines in recent years have been about how he keeps losing those close to him should go through a time when he wants to keep others at a distance.

I think I’m rather partial to the 9th Doctor, which I admit partly is because it was NuWho who sucked me into the franchise and I’m rather sorry that Eccleston left after only one series. I understand his reasons, but I’m still sort of disappointed. As for the old series, I’d probably have to say the 4th Doctor, with his aloof personality and his rather brusk way of dealing with others.

I’m watching the CCJ interview with Milo. The boy really is full of himself, talking about the “status of journalism” now and how he’s singlehandedly going to change the social discourse by being deliberately inflammatory, etc.

And that’s only in the first 15 minutes.

Also, Milo looks at the camera from time to time. Chuck almost never does. He’s looking downward or to the right most of the time.

I admit it’s been awhile since I’ve seen Series 1, but I found Nine’s infatuation with Rose to be something that developed over the course of the series, and was generally restrained. Of course, that may be in comparison to Ten and how he seemed to be practically glued to her. Consider that Nine was ready to kick her off during “Father’s Day” for breaking the rules, something that Ten would have treated like cutting off a limb.

Point shared on the kicking off thing. The Doctor has done that to literally every NuWho companion. Though the 12th’s threat to Clara was likely the dumbest instance.

As in the Doctor being weapons-grade stupid. He even admits it.

CLARA: You don’t actually believe all this, do you? Hiding creatures, things from under the bed.
(Bang, bang, bang. Scrape, scrape, scrape.)
DOCTOR: What’s that in the mirror, or the corner of your eye? What’s that footstep following, but never passing by?
(Bang, bang, bang.)
CLARA: Did we come to the end of the universe because of a nursery rhyme?
(Bang, bang, bang. Bang, bang, bang. The Doctor sonicks the hatch to Unlocked. The mechanism starts to turn.)
CLARA: That’s you turning it, right?
DOCTOR: No. Get in the Tardis.
CLARA: Why?
DOCTOR: I have to know.
CLARA: Doctor. Doctor
DOCTOR: The Tardis, now!
CLARA: Okay, okay. Somebody is out there. Now we know, we can leave. Oh, Doctor!
DOCTOR: It’s a pressure lock. Releasing it could’ve triggered the opening mechanism.
CLARA: Is there even an atmosphere out there?
DOCTOR: There is an air shell round the ship. Why are you still here?
CLARA: Because I am not going to leave you in danger!
DOCTOR: Then you will never travel with me again, because that is the deal! Tardis, now! Do as you are told!
(Clara runs to the Tardis.)
CLARA: You’re an idiot.
(She goes inside.)
DOCTOR: I know.

Looking forward to seeing this doc, “Hot Girls Wanted”, on Netflix tomorrow. It sounds like a pretty good examination of the difference between women’s natural sexuality and the exploitation of our sexuality by looking at these barely legal young women in a very personal way and what drives them to pursue this kind of sex work.

hollywoodreporter.com

In an odd, twisted way, the increasing availability of porn has always struck me as a corollary to the “Stepford Wife”, except that this particular role requires the participating woman to be available to many men, from performance to viewing, as a one dimensional character. What it does to still-forming minds such as these young women, and any others who see sex as “no big deal” regardless of consequences, remains to be seen, not to mention boys who grow up with the idea of female sexuality being yet another consumable they can buy at will.

Not to be offensive, but porn has been available for many years. Is it easier to get? Yes. But let’s not pretend that it hasn’t been around until the Internet. There was an interesting documentary about Betty Page after she died, the documentary filmmaker did an extensive interview with her. I admired her gumption.

Porn may have been available for many years, but we’re talking a different dynamic here. These young women are treated like cattle in an “industry” that acts more like a meat grinder, demanding “new” constantly.

The “expiry date” of a porn actress is roughly mid-30s, or younger, though some persist in the business long after by becoming producers, etc. It’s an exaggerated version of Hollywood in general, which favors youthful looking actresses whose “shelf life” wanes in the late 30s, (see which screenrant.com) while older actors can get decent parts well into their 60s and 70s.

For those young women who get out of the industry and into regular jobs, there’s a different problem. If they’re outed as a former porn actress, they often lose their jobs. This has happened several times among female teachers, who may have done one or two pron gigs as a way to make money in college, but not afterward. It’s their students who often find out their past occupation, interestingly enough.

I’ve been plowing through the interview, transcribing as I go for later snarking, and I’m surprised at how inept these millennials are in getting their video podcasts up and running. I’ve also been amused at the facial expressions Milo has when the camera cuts to him while CCJ is rambling on about shit that’s only marginally on topic. CCJ has referred to Andrew Breitbart several times in the first 30 minutes, mentioned his “critically acclaimed” Coolidge book, the many stories he has broken before anyone else, his journalism awards, his grades in school, his superior pattern-matching abilities, his wife’s ethnicity … I’m halfway through and they’ve barely even touched on the main topic — CCJ’s banishment from Twitter.

I have to take breaks away from this project, or I will lose my mind.

Haven’t been watching Game of Thrones much this season (only the first two episodes) but it looks like they pissed a lot of people off and lost 840,000 viewers for it.
en.wikipedia.org

There was a lot of pushback about the rape scene with Sansa on her wedding night. Personally, I found it disturbing, but quite in keeping with the Boltons’ total inhumanity toward their subjects. One female critic — I need to find the link — said she felt Sansa’s situation was understandable and unavoidable, given the setting and premise of the book and show, and that Sansa’s long range plan was to recover her family’s birthright by any means possible.

I decided to hide the previous paragraph, because the scene I mention happens after episode 2.

I think some people might be growing weary of GOT because of its glacial pace. When is Danaerys going to Westeros? What about those dragons? Will winter ever fucking come? And so on. There are all these subplots and story threads to follow, and with such a long lag time between seasons, it may be hard for casual viewers to maintain their interest.

332 CleverToad  May 28, 2015 5:22:36am

Drive-by on my way to work. Old (OLD) Who Fan here, voting for Sarah Jane as the companion with the most enduring influence, partly because the character herself was fun and largely because of Lis Sladen. Jo Grant also dear to me. But I have liked ALL of the companions for various reasons, some more than others.

The worst part of fandom is when the fen of a particular genre get into splinter mode, breaking into religious sects and factions and sniping across barbed wire, clutching their canons like holy books and yelling ‘Die heretic!” as they push each other off the bridge.

The best part is the general tolerance of the fan community as a whole, bound together in recognition that if we weren’t all crazy, we would go insane. We’re all bozos on this bus. So relax and enjoy your fandoms and your particular companions, and never mind about the guy squawking in the next foxhole. There’s room enough for all of us here.

338 Timothy Watson  May 28, 2015 5:36:23am
A woman discharged from the Marine Corps for violating multiple direct orders is fighting to the highest military court.

Military Times (“Bible verse sends former Marine back to court”):

The case involves former Lance Cpl. Monifa Sterling, who in May 2013 was assigned at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, to a desk job handling complaints from other Marines experiencing issues with their Common Access Cards.

Sterling taped three paper copies of the same quote — “No weapon formed against me shall prosper” — in 28-point type on her computer’s tower, her monitor and her desk. The line is a variant of a passage from Isaiah 57:14; Sterling said the three copies reflected the Trinity.

A native New Yorker and Christian who does not affiliate with a particular denomination, Sterling told military officials that the posted passage helped her summon patience when dealing with short-tempered Marines who were frustrated with their CAC problems.

[…]

I don’t see how Hobby Lobby applies here. Sterling was not only a government employee, rather than the private citizen running a public accommodation, but a uniformed member of the armed forces. Government employees have substantially less expressive right in the workplace than is typical in the private sector, simply because our expression might be construed as government policy. Military personnel have more restrictions still because of the need for “good order and discipline.” There’s a long history of case law in support of these principles.

Sterling’s case gets even less complicated given that she was repeatedly ordered by her superiors to take down the verses. If she believed her staff sergeant’s order was illegal, she had every right to appeal it up the chain of command or even write her Congressman. She had no right at all to ignore it, let alone defy it repeatedly and brazenly.

This is sufficiently clear cut that I wouldn’t be surprised at all if court decided not to take the appeal at all.

re: #331 wheat-dogghazi-mailgate

At this point, the show has drastically deviated from the books, especially with regards to Sansa’s storyline - Show-Sansa is basically going through the plot of another character, while Book-Sansa remains in the Eyrie and is gradually playing the Game there without ever coming close to encountering the Boltons.
With regards to the switched Sansa storyline (Boltons organizing a fake marriage to a “Stark girl” in the books replaced with an actual marriage to a Stark girl), the rape scene and follow-up scenes, horrible as they are, are both keeping in line with that storyline in the books while also totally cementing Ramsay as a monster (and yes, i know, that’s already been established by some of his actions, but compared to the Book version of the character - a cold, emotionless psycho who’s actually much, much worse - Show-Ramsey comes off nice and sane).
My pet theory is that Show-Sansa is being gradually “groomed” as the replacement of a certain vengeful book character the show has thus far cut out - mind you, I’ll be glad to be wrong if the show ends up introducing said character by the end of the season, though it’s not likely at this point. The events at the Wall are also different, yet nonetheless seem to be building up towards the events of Jon’s storyline at the end of book 5.

With regards to the pacing, it seems to me that folks are forgetting just how utterly slow paced most of the first season was. In the past two episodes, they’ve burned through events that unfolded over the course of more than half a book, and have even surpassed the books with some plot-lines (Tyrion has yet to meet Danny by the end of Book 5, making this uncharted territory for book readers). Danny ain’t heading to Westeros in the books yet either - intent on learning how to rule before heading off to conquer the Seven Kingdoms - though we should be getting more dragony goodness before the end of the season.

re: #338 Timothy Watson

It’s similar in many ways to the John Freshwater case in Ohio. He was a middle school science teacher who had a Bible on his desk and several Christian-oriented posters and books in his classroom. Plus, he was teaching YEC. His superiors told him to put the Bible away and ditch the posters, etc. He refused. He claimed his First Amendment rights were being trampled, etc., etc., and every decision up to and including the Ohio supreme court ruled that the school district was justified in firing him, because of insubordination.

Freshwater, however, was pretty aggressive in his proselytizing. If Sterling was merely displaying Bible verses and not getting in people’s faces about her religion, I’d say her superiors were being out of line in telling her to take them down. But, her refusal to obey a direct order is also a big problem, being the USMC and all. The court may rule against her just for that reason, regardless of the freedom of expression rights a civilian might enjoy.

By the way, since we’re talking about the Marines, my grand-niece leaves for boot camp in a couple of months. She was in Marines JROTC in high school. I have some misgivings about her joining the military, but at the same time I’m really proud of her. She’s a great kid and probably will be a fine Marine.

She shoots good, too.

Incredibly self-absorbed, to the exclusion of all else. Like Dr. Matt, I was only able to tolerate the interview for about 10 minutes. Having been married to a malignant narcissist for a couple of years, I’ve had more than my fill of it. People and events are only of importance in their relationship to the narcissist—if they have no bearing on his image/ego, then they are less than irrelevant and he won’t even pretend to have empathy for them.

The world of the narcissist is like a box with a stage inside, and he is the star. Bit players may intrude from time to time (hence the refernce to the “lesser” Charles Johnson when mentioning our Charles), but they’re merely annoying hands reaching inside the box. They always end up being dismissed, as does any person who fails to be 150% supportive and constantly stroke his ego. Criticism, even of the mildest & most constructive sort, is seen as a deadly betrayal. If his wife hasn’t already learned that, she will soon enough. I feel for her.

Definitely take lots of breaks. Getting up close & personal with that kind of pathology for any length of time isn’t healthy.

Roger’s voice is shot, but the music itself was as good as ever. He can perform, but can’t sing, if you know what I mean. Pete can still rock a mean guitar. They also told a bunch of anecdotes about touring, life, etc., and Pete joked that most everyone in the audience wasn’t even alive when the band started touring (myself included), and the few folks who were old enough to remember got the reminder that EMTs are standing by; oxygen is available, and that includes for the band.

A message from my hidden self:

We must defeat the theocrats and keep them out of power at any cost. Those of you who do not personally associate with these people, or live in an area where they have power, probably do not realize how evil and nefarious they really are. Your worst suspicions are probably not as bad as the truth.

This is true at a private level as well. Some of the most rapacious grifters, the most abusive employers, the most bare-faced liars, the most hypocritical and dysfunctional families, are the ones who make a show of their piety and righteousness. It is not just weakness or the law of averages that makes so many fundy theocrats pedophiles, adulterers, criminals and crazed abusers. They love to inflict pain, and doing so with a veneer of righteousness only magnifies the sick joy they feel from it. Their hypocrisy is not a failure to them, it is a calculated behavior that they find deeply gratifying.

I know these people, I have dealt with them all my life. They are the true agents of Satan in the modern world.

This abortion stuff is just smoke and mirrors for the cretinous Republican base. Like many fundy-inspired demands, this one has an element of pain and humiliation connected with it. That is why it resonates with the base.

It is Walker’s union-busting that excites the GOP’s real players and gives him a chance. Fifty years of anti-union agitation has made this the least unionized country in the developed world, and by a huge margin. The relentless GOP/corporate campaign against organized labor has turned us back to the Gilded Age, even as heavily unionized economies like France, Finland, and the UK leave us in the dust. With Walker they are going for the kill, the final push that will take us all the way back to feudalism.

Another example: The first time I went to Brazil, in 1978, per capita income there was 1/50 what it was in the US. Organized labor was held in check by military rule. Today, organized labor is the single most important factor in Brazilian democracy. Per capita income is close to half that of the US now, and they are catching up fast.

Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, neurosurgeon Ben Carson, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, Florida Sen. Marco Rubio and Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker each take 10 percent support among Republicans in the poll.

Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul follows with 7 percent support while Texas Sen. Ted Cruz takes 6 percent and former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina has 2 percent.

No GOP hopeful in the poll captures more than 10 percent of the vote. Sen. Rick Santorum (R-Penn.), who announced his White House bid on Wednesday, did not register among overall voters.

He actually stopped the show here on Long Island last week to insist that a front row weed-smoker put out the joint - and the smoker got a novel suggestion from Pete as to where he could put said joint.

There’s a Youtube video of it out there somewhere.

Sounds like it’s past time for the band to hang it up. The Who were an okay band when I saw them at Monterey, but it’s nearly fifty years on. I’d rather be able to remember one of us as we were.

A lot of people are saying that, that if Rog can’t or won’t tolerate smoke at their shows, he should just call it a day.

I have a couple of friends who are close to the band, and they say that the allergy is real.

I have no feelings on whether they should quit or not, honestly. I don’t intend to go and see them, and I’ve got all those wonderful Who albums to listen to if I need a fix.

And having been in bands all my life, I’ve learned that lead singers will complain about anything. ;)

Abbott, curiously enough, has not yet issued orders for the Texas Guard to monitor federal aid workers for possible signs that they might impose martial law on the state, even though it is well known that FEMA exists largely for the purpose of taking away patriots’ guns and herding conservatives into railroad cars to take them to detention camps in closed-down Walmarts.

Saw The Who the other day. 50th anniversary tour. Glad I saw them, but yeah, they’re old.

Roger’s voice is shot, but the music itself was as good as ever. He can perform, but can’t sing, if you know what I mean. Pete can still rock a mean guitar. They had Zak Starkey on drums, who learned how to play drums from Keith (and also happens to be Ringo Starr’s son). Pete’s brother Simon was also playing with them, so it was a family affair.

They also told a bunch of anecdotes about touring, life, etc., and Pete joked that most everyone in the audience wasn’t even alive when the band started touring (myself included), and the few folks who were old enough to remember got the reminder that EMTs are standing by; oxygen is available, and that includes for the band.

A good friend of mine bought two tickets to the Who/Clash in Chicago 1982 with the intent to surprise me. I was surprised all right - the show was a week or so after I had to report to Fort Knox for Basic Training. That’s as close as I got to seeing either my two favorite bands.

Morning LGF lizards.

I was reading through the thread and saw mentions of The Stones and The Who.

I’m not going to bang on these guys still travelling around using their original band names and playing as them.

But what I really admire about rockers getting old is the way Robert Plant has handled his career. It is my understanding that Plant refuses to do any more Led Zep tours. I can admire that. I think his thinking is similar to mine about The Who. Without Bonham, there is no Zep.

To me without Moon and Entwistle there is no Who.

So, it would be nice if Roger and Pete went on the road as a band and did a little old and a little new, but not sell yourself as The Who. Maybe go out as Roger and Pete’s My Generation Band.

I love how Plant goes about it…like this…Robert Plant’s Band of Joy.

A couple of days ago Mayor Annise had a press conference about the flooding in Houston, about the current conditions, damage, resources available, where and how people could get help, etc. As always she was terrific, concise, practical and helpful. So then here comes Gov Abbott with a bunch of platitudes about how his heart goes out to all the Texans who have been hurt, blah blah. Then I see fucking Cruz standing there. Annise had to be choking back bile as she introduced him to speak. I think I listened to his whiny voice for about 15 seconds before hitting the blessed mute button. Yeah, he’s desperate to get his face anywhere in front of a camera.

When will Ted Cruz walk his talk and call on Texas to pick itself up by its bootstraps and not accept federal disaster relief?

In a column for the National Review on Tuesday, Mark Krikorian of the Center for Immigration Studies proposed requiring formerly incarcerated people to pass what is essentially a literacy test in order to regain their right to vote.

Krikorian praised Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan’s recent veto of a bill expanding voting rights for ex-felons but added that conservatives should give “more thought” to the issue of reenfranchising formerly incarcerated people, who because of disparities in the criminal justice system are disproportionately African American.

His idea: requiring ex-felons to pass the same citizenship test in order to regain their right to vote that immigrants pass in order to become citizens.

Appearing on the “Point of View” radio program yesterday, Zmirak said that Christian consumers need to start threatening companies like Apple and Walmart with boycotts since these companies opposed “right to discriminate” laws in Indiana and Arkansas.

“We need to threaten them back,” he said. “I can’t believe any Christian in America will ever buy an Apple product again after the CEO of Apple threatened Indiana over religious freedom. I can’t believe any Christian will go to Walmart after Walmart threatened Arkansas over religious freedom. You know what? You want to take my religious freedom away, I won’t buy from your business. I will make the sacrifice and buy something else or I will do without, but I am not going to patronize the enemies of my religion. Yes, I agree. But the first two scenarios about rape fantasy seem to be what he has seen in magazines. He asks…Have you ever looked at Stag, Nero (other mags). Do you wonder why newspapers with articles like Girl 12 raped by 14 men, sell so well? To what in us are they appealing?

Then he goes on with the fictional couple, trying to answer those questions.

Twenge cites a surge of individualism as the force behind atheism’s relative appeal to a young, self-centric generation. She’s literally written the book on the subject: “Generation Me.” In it, Twenge provides academic rational to support the allegation that children born in the 1980’s and 1990’s form an “Entitlement Generation,” which she describes as being “tolerant, confident, open-minded, and ambitious but also disengaged, narcissistic, distrustful, and anxious.”

You can certainly flee when being pursued by religious hoards as we are in the US today. Resemblance to zombies not unintentional.

Yeah, I was just comparing my own experiences with leaving religion (I consciously and actively “fled”/left Catholicism) vs. my own kids’ experience of simply being brought up in a non-religious household.

My kids aren’t old enough to have taken part in the survey, but they’re of the age now where they are at least somewhat aware of religion and what it means for us to not participate in it. They haven’t “fled” from anything; rather, they just mostly ignore it.

I’d be curious to see how many of the non-religious respondents to the survey were raised in non-religious households.

I was just about to point that out, that he was conflating a voluntary procedure and how “cool” it is with one that by law a woman cannot choose to avoid. And since the law says you must view a sonogram, that means (wait for it) that if they can’t see it with a non-invasive procedure, then they are bound by law to use an invasive one before the abortion can be performed. So it doesn’t matter what “most people” choose, Scotty, because you’re not giving them a choice!

Here is what I would like to know. Why did Scotty need to mention about his son’s ultra sound images in the context of his defense of his abortion mandates? Did it have anything to do with downplaying the whole idea of a woman being forced to have the invasive ultrasound?

I think it was right after the family moved out of the Manhattan Projects!

Did they leave in the Trans-Uranium railroad?

You’d fly fast too if your ass was on fire.

The problem is Walker compared an non invasive procedure to an invasive one. Apples and Oranges.

And there was a very good reason he mentioned them both. He wanted his audience to make the connection. Ultrasounds are no big thing, you’ve all seen those really cool ultrasounds. Yeah, it’s just like that, so were not passing some kind of a monstrous bill here.

Dana is really working it for Scotty, isn’t she?

Pro tip: Bragging about your Candy Crush level doesn’t make you a gamer.

Also, ROFL Ted Cruz.

You Magna Carters (I have no idea what to call that generation) have no idea how good you have it.

“Magna Carters” sounds right, but more importantly it suggests an AWESOME action movie. Opening shot: Jimmy Carter on a Habitat for Humanity jobsite. A cell phone rings and Carter answers it. Saying “OK, got it” with a look of resigned exasperation, he puts down the framing hammer and picks up a large sledgehammer as he walks out of frame. Push in to a small radio, as we hear the announcer mention an upcoming Ted Cruz press conference.

Might need a little fleshing out.

And he’s gloating that this account won’t be taken out because it’s under the control of a different person. Looks like Twitter’s policy needs to be tweaked to not only cover in-duh-viduals but the web properties they own.
