Busted! National Review Crops and “Dirties” Photo From Austin Walmart, Claims It Shows “Venezuela”

Alleged pic of empty shelves in Venezuela is actually from a Wal-Mart in the US
Wingnuts • Views: 57,232

Get a load of this….

So Michelle Malkin in National Review did a piece on Bernie Sanders a few days ago, still whining about the underarm deodorant issue…

Ask Venezuelans How Sanders-Style Socialism Is Working Out for Them

Venezuela’s vibrant economy.

Wow, horrible pic of some lady in a store with empty shelves and disgustingly dirty too — along with a caption “Venezuela’s vibrant economy.”

So I did an image search and turned up this….

Defying the Laws of Physics at Walmart

Now it appears that this may be a Wal-Mart in Wisconsin (?), but it’s not clear from the story. But if you look at a larger version of the image, you can see the English signs in the background, so it’s clearly NOT from Venezuela.

Preparing for Hurricane Rita, Maria Chavez of Austin looks for a loaf of bread Thursday in the empty shelves of a Wal-Mart at Interstate 35 and Slaughter Lane. The store was sold out. (Credit: Jay Janner, Austin-American Statesman)

So whoever posted this story to National Review purposely cropped out the English signs and then applied a dirty filter to it — because we all know Hispanics are filthy people, right?

In an argument with a wingnut friend of mine, his response was “It’s clearly a stock photo.” ORLY? Even if true, why crop it, make it dirty, and label it as a sign of Venezuela’s economy?

So, bottom line, a scare story about empty shelves that will plague the U.S. if Sanders is elected used a picture from a Wal-Mart in the U.S. that had trouble keeping their shelves stocked.

UPDATE at 5/31/15 2:18:56 pm by Charles Johnson

LGF contributor Backwoods_Sleuth discovered the true origin of the photo, from a 2005 post at this blog: Fergie’s Tech Blog: Austin Hurricane Panic Insanity.

The photographer was Jay Janner from the Austin-American Statesman, and the photo shows a Walmart in Austin, Texas. The original caption from their front page:

“Preparing for Hurricane Rita, Maria Chavez of Austin looks for a loaf of bread Thursday in the empty shelves of a Wal-Mart at Interstate 35 and Slaughter Lane. The store was sold out.”

Well done, weave!

2 Nyet  May 31, 2015 1:34:21pm

The author of the photo is Jay Janner from Austin American-Statesman. It’s at least as old as 2007. Janner usually works in the US, so the photo almost certainly depicts an American store (likely in Texas).

Either NRO is infringing on Janner’s copyright, and he can sue them, or they know what the photo depicts and are lying.

3 Charles Johnson  May 31, 2015 1:35:21pm

I added the National Review’s altered version to your post, for comparison.

4 Charles Johnson  May 31, 2015 1:42:20pm

A Google Images search shows that this photo has been posted at hundreds of websites. But the “dirtied up” version is only found at National Review — so they almost certainly altered and cropped it themselves.

7 Nyet  May 31, 2015 1:48:25pm

Not sure it’s a Walmart (never been in one, so you guys know better), and it’s probably somewhere in Texas, since most of Janner’s photos seem to depict Texas.

8 Thanos  May 31, 2015 1:48:41pm

My guess is this is a pre storm photo, where people deplete stocks of things like water, bread, milk, flour and soups before winter storms, floods, and hurricanes. Katrina? Sandy? Boston Blizzards? *judging from the Febreze & water it’s more likely hurricane prep or flood prep than blizzard, and she’s on the bread aisle in a US store.*

9 Justanotherhuman  May 31, 2015 1:49:41pm

Could that image have been a post-Katrina one?

Last year Walmart was having trouble keeping their shelves stocked just due to the normal operating procedure of understaffing their stores. It was a big story for a while. I need to hunt for some links.

From having to go to Walmart during late-night due to a odd work schedule, I can tell you that empty bread shelves are a common occurrence on late Sunday nights before the weekly deliveries start to arrive. However, with all the bottled water she’s also buying, that would indicate probably some sort of weather event - hurricane landfall perhaps?

This is a very old and thoroughly discredited idea, one that dates back to Karl Marx and to the anti-capitalists who preceded him. It is a facet of the belief that free markets are irrational, and that if reason could be imposed on markets — which is to say, if reason could be imposed on free human beings — then enlightened planners could ensure that resources are directed toward their best use. This line of thinking historically has led to concentration camps, gulags, firing squads, purges, and the like, for a few reasons:

He talks specifically about commies.

Now, sure, those folks mix up their Nazis and commies all the time. But that doesn’t mean that while calling him a commie they also called him a Nazi.

So were Manzanar and the rest of the West Coast US Japanese internment camps. Though obviously far less horrific in their treatment of their illegally held captives, they absolutely were concentration camps.

And Katrina hit southern LA on 8/29/05. As we all remember, a lot of residents were displaced to TX, also.

A weakened Rita made landfall on Sabine Pass, Texas with winds of 120 mph (195 km/h) on September 24 which dissipated further over land.

OK, Sanders has referred to himself as a democratic socialist, and he speaks glowingly of the social and economic policies of much of western Europe. “Sanders style socialism” is what you find in places like Sweden, the Netherlands, France, Germany, and many other western democracies. Not Venezuela. And how are all those evil socialist countries in Europe doing? A lot better than Venezuela.

For nearly a century, this has been the common overreaction on the right (NR being a prime example) to anyone who gets near the dreaded s-word. Just call them a commie and ignore all substance.

Also, Malkin who the NRO obvious has no problem publishing since her article is the subject of this page, wrote an impassioned defense of the Japanese American internment camps. And of course the writer of the piece, Williamson, is enamored with the free market right up until the point of reproductive freedom, where he advocates hanging women who’ve had abortions until they’re dead.

One thing I noticed about that “Ask Venezuelans How Sanders-Style Socialism Is Working Out for Them” Malkin article - after you remove the doctored photograph, essentially there are no Venezuelans to be found in it, at all - in fact there is just one anecdotal reference to “Sanders’s utopia in South America” that talks about how the military is in charge of food distribution - which is nowhere near what Sanders is advocating.

80 Charles Johnson  May 31, 2015 2:42:42pm

I just noticed - Twitter seems to have greatly reduced the amount of time they cache their Twitter Cards that show a synopsis of an article. I just edited the title of this post a few minutes ago and it’s already showing up on Twitter. That’s great. They used to cache the Cards for a week or more, which meant that if you had a typo or an error of some kind, you couldn’t change what showed up beneath a tweet. Now you can. Excellent.

To all the folks that put this thread together…good work. LGF…citizen journalism and accurate analysis at its best!

Now about that photo. The dirt job sucks. You wouldn’t see dirt like that on the shelves. The dirt is the same tone on all surfaces and in the shadows. A little extra work on adding select tonal changes and you might have made it just a bit more realistic. Maybe.

And you can tell the dirt is on a layer. You can see where the dirt has been cleared away from the woman. Probably used an erase brush tool. It even lightens up the area around the woman because it is clear of the dirt.

Fail all around. But no surprise with Malkin and National Review.

I don’t understand what Gus is objecting to. He’s right. There are good examples of mixed socialist states in Europe which is exactly what is close to Sanders’ worldview. It is NRO who painted Sanders as a Chavez style leftist. I have no defense of the Venezuelan economic system but this was clearly intended to deceive people on NRO’s part about Venezuela and even more so to liken Sanders to that when in reality Sanders is much more closer to policies advocated by the British Labour Party, French Socialist Party, or the Socialist Party of Germany.

ISTR that the Brits were the first to use concentration camps during the Boer War.

The Boers were successfully using guerrilla tactics at will against the Brits.

So the British rounded up the Boer women & children into concentration camps and literally let them starve until the Boers fighting the Brits surrendered.

The same tactics were used in Kenya during the Mau Mau rebellion.

Jim Wright nails it again, this time about Rand Paul:

I can’t stand this mangy little labradoodle.

I agree that NSA domestic surveillance needs to be curtailed and placed under strict judicial review.

HOWEVER, the crap that Paul is currently pushing is nothing but pure distilled bullshit.

NSA domestic spying programs ARE NOT illegal. They were fully authorized by congress in the panicked wake of 911 via the Patriot Act and expanded under the Protect America Act. Warrantless wiretapping, mass collection, and total intrusion into global communications were authorized by Congress. The constitutional limitations put in place after Watergate, FISA requirements, and domestic intelligence oversight requirements were SPECIFICALLY dismissed by very same gun waving patriots who told us that fucking TORTURE was an acceptable tool for a civilized people.

Don’t believe me? Here, right here, is where the steel meets flesh: CONGRESS has reauthorized funding for these programs for the last 14 years.

Members of Congress, including Tea Party Patriots like Rand Paul and the head of the Congressional Tea Party Caucus herself, Michele Bachmann, oversaw these programs as part of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, which SPECIFICALLY gave her authority over the CIA, NSA, DIA, and the rest of the U.S. intelligence community.

While the constitutionality of these programs has not been fully examined by the Supreme Court, they WERE fully authorized by Congress (on BOTH sides of the aisle, and the Tea Party) and two Presidents. They ARE are legal under the law and NO American including Rand Fucking Paul would have a problem with them if they only targeted dark skinned Muslims and don’t you goddamned pretend otherwise.

In point of fact, if these programs ARE illegal, then Rand Paul and his fellows in Congress on both sides of the aisle are guilty of conspiracy (in the legal sense of conspiring to break the law) by repeatedly funding this activity.

While I am a huge advocate for returning to ALL intelligence gathering operations to strict FISA review and intense uncompromising oversight, the horseshit Rand Paul is currently shovelling is nothing but pure partisan grandstanding.

He’s running for president. Caveat Emptor.

I think this article might be of some interest to the Christians here as well as the atheists. It’s about how the Southern Baptist church is changing and, more specifically, about a small church in Murfreesboro, Tennessee (yes, the same Murfreesboro where all the uproar over the mosque was happening). The church was dying and facing total bills that were higher than what it had in its bank account, so they reached out to some Arab Christians to see if they wanted to buy it. They did.

It’s pretty long, but worth reading for a couple of reasons, IMO. Unfortunately, it doesn’t sound like the Arab guy now leading the church is any more tolerant & open-minded than the old Southern Baptists were—maybe even less. They also seem to be particularly interested in “saving” Muslims, which could cause more than a little friction.

Emphasis in the last paragraph is mine:

One church’s sunset means a new day for another

How an Arabic Baptist church came to be, much less came to be in Murfreesboro, Tenn., is another story of the changing South, which is now home to seven of the top 10 suburban areas with the fastest-growing immigrant populations, a list that includes the Nashville-Murfreesboro corridor along Interstate 24.

Specifically, it is the story of Raouf Ghattas, who was born in Egypt and grew up a Presbyterian. As an adult, he came to the United States to work as a nuclear engineer in Charlotte, where he learned to pronounce biscuit “biskit” instead of “biskwit,” grew tired of fast living and fond of Billy Graham, and in a mood of desperation one night, called out, “Lord, even if I die, I can’t live like this anymore.”

“The Lord made it clear,” he said. “No more drinking. No more girls. No more smoking. I slept like a baby. The next morning, I said, ‘I am a new creation in Christ.’ “

As a new creation, Raouf decided to stop being a nuclear engineer and attend a Southern Baptist seminary to become a preacher. He was drawn to a denomination that embraced evangelism and, as he saw it, conservative values similar to those in the Arab world, where men headed the family, and homosexuality was against God’s order. […]

If anyone’s interested in paging this, feel free to do so as I’m not in the mood to create & babysit one.

Yeah I think you’re right about that regarding the Brits and concentration camps during the Boer War. It built up generations of anti-British hostility among Afrikaners. Sadly, the lesson wasn’t really learned on many of them.

I agree. When I read the tweets you posted, I went, as you were trying to do, “What does that have to do with the NRO picture?”

NRO could spin Gus’s statement into “Not everyone on the left disagrees that this is what Venezuelan store shelves look like.” While Venezuela might have empty store shelves, NRO should not be given any chance to escape their photo doctoring.

Interesting read. As an agnostic, I just wish people of all faiths and non-faiths realized that we’re all in this world together and that we should be aware of our differences. I don’t care if someone wants to be Christian, Muslim, Jewish, etc as long as they’re not damning me and others for not choosing that. It seems to me after reading that article that this new minister has much of the same intolerance as in the past.

I’m not so sure about Hillary being afraid of Bernie’s issues. Bernie gets to bring a lot of stuff to the table that Hillary can’t really initiate, but when push comes to shove they probably agree on more stuff than disagree. But Chavismo thinks that a President with 20% popularity can continue getting away with blaming the opposition for all the problems. Because this is not going away anytime soon. Price controls, exchange controls, absurd economic policies are coming home to roost. What is going on, is a reflection of the lack of foreign currency, for a Government used to solving supply problems with massive imports of scarce items. Except that the too many items are now scarce, national production has been decimated and the biggest scarcity is that of foreign currency. And neither the Chinese, nor the Russians, nor the Iranians, will give Maduro much at this time.”

Good summation. I’d add Bernie adds the extreme desires on some issues that everyone on the left likes and runs on wanting it all. He’s idealistic.

I think Hillary shares those ideals but has been around long enough to know what you can sell in an election. She is realistic.

Together and what ever O’Malley kicks up in the dust about the banking system will make Hilliary have to explain and tune her campaign to some of those issues. It’s a good thing to have happen.

Question for you fine folks: Seeing how Hillary has, in my humble opinion, the best chance for taking the Democratic nomination for 2016, who do you think will be her VP pick?

Personally, i’ve been mentally toying around with the thought of a joint Hillary/Sanders ticket, if only because the exploding-head reaction that would be seen across the RWNJ sphere would be amusing to watch…

Discussed it earlier but again Julian Castro. He’s young yet has some executive experience in and outside of Washington, he’s Latino, etc. I was really impressed with his DNC Keynote three years ago. He reminded me a lot of a young Obama honestly.I don’t see anyway it’s Sanders. I like him and hell I’m probably going to vote for him in the primary but it won’t be him.

I’d be fine with Castro. And, depending on how badly O’Malley gets beat up during his presidential run, he might be okay—although I’ve seen a lot of negative stuff about him, particularly since the Baltimore police issues, and there doesn’t seem to be the enthusiasm about him that I saw earlier on the left. (That was before Bernie saddled up his unicorn.)

While Bernie as a VP choice would definitely cause the right to freak, I don’t think Hillary can afford to have a VP who’s 6 years older than she is.

She needs to go younger for a running mate. As for Marty, I don’t see him as VP material. I think he’s someone who should be considered cabinet material. He really doesn’t put much in play for Hillary that she doesn’t on her own i.e. Biden helping Obama with white working class and general white older voters and his state/region won’t be a problem for Hillary either. I don’t see Sanders as VP material. I’m trying to think though about who else would be good. I guess I wouldn’t mine my own state’s Tim Kaine but I suspect Hillary will and should go with someone with a more progressive reputation for a running mate.

Don’t know why but O’Malley strikes me as a good possible AG but Democratic AGs have been people like Holder, Lynch, and Reno more than elected officials. I don’t even know if Marty is a lawyer by training and that perhaps the only reason why I think of him as a possible AG is that his wife is a judge in Maryland.

I do think Kaine is a possibility and he has been vetted before. What would be unfortunate though is we would lose a Senator and I don’t want to open up any possibility of George “Macaca” Allen coming back or Eric Cantor and I have no idea who we’d run for Senate if it came to that since two of our three Congressmen are from bright blue Democratic areas and I don’t think Gerry Connolly has senate ambitions and he’s fairly old too. Having a hard time thinking of people from those three states who fit the bill. Maybe Debbie Wasserman Schultz but I doubt they’d go with a representative and I don’t know if they want the conversation to be about two women on the same ticket which would be unfair given hundreds of all male tickets but you know how sexism is.

This is a far cry from when Perot raised his grizzled head. I thought that he was a crank from the beginning. The media chose to give him a great ride.

His running mate, VIce Admiral James Stockdale, earned a permanent place in my esteem with his words, “Who am I? Why am I here?” at the opening of the vice presidential debate.

About Admiral Stockdale, courtesy of Wikipedia:

Flying from USS Oriskany on a mission over North Vietnam on September 9, 1965, Stockdale ejected from his Douglas A-4E Skyhawk, which had been struck by enemy fire and completely disabled. He parachuted into a small village, where he was severely beaten and taken prisoner.

Stockdale was held as a prisoner of war in the Hoa Lo prison (popularly known as the Hanoi Hilton) for the next seven and a half years. As the senior Naval officer, he was one of the primary organizers of prisoner resistance. Tortured routinely and denied medical attention for the severely damaged leg he suffered during capture, Stockdale created and enforced a code of conduct for all prisoners which governed torture, secret communications, and behavior. In the summer of 1969, he was locked in leg irons in a bath stall and routinely tortured and beaten. When told by his captors that he was to be paraded in public, Stockdale slit his scalp with a razor to purposely disfigure himself so that his captors could not use him as propaganda. When they covered his head with a hat, he beat himself with a stool until his face was swollen beyond recognition. When Stockdale was discovered with information that could implicate his friends’ “black activities”, he slit his wrists so they could not torture him into confession.

Interesting.

So, Rand Paul knew the fix was in?

US Senate is not expected to hold any more votes tonight; Patriot Act provisions set to expire at 12 am ET - @frankthorpNBC

Patriot Act was sloppy overkill, but it’s a disgrace that it dies, not as policy, but because of our inability to govern ourselves.

Yeah, he went there, and now the religious right bloggers are hopping on the train.

Perhaps we owe the Mormons an apology?

What little I’ve thought through on this, I think we will eventually end up with what I’ll label the “Domestic Covenant”. In such a Covenant two people (gender unnecessary) agree to raise a household, but additional members may be added to such a covenant if all agree.

I don’t think this is really that hard to work with in our legal system, which already allows for legal partnerships.

The religious want to deny that as far as the legal system in our country is concerned, marriage is just such an arrangement, if a very special case of one. Our Constitution makes no basis for a religious system of marriage. It’s just not in there. So states have marriages but they are special types of contracts between parties, still not religious rites.

It’s hard for the religious right in this country, constantly being preached that this is a “Christian nation”, to understand that our laws are not in fact religious laws.

It’s actually really difficult legally, because the legal marriage framework is built around two people and includes something like hundreds of individual benefits, legislative and regulatory call outs.

How do you legislate the spousal testimonial and marital secrets privileges when they involve multiple (possibly adversarial) relationships. How about the dynastic use of rolling polygamous marriages to avoid inheritance taxes entirely, with two wealthy families just marrying each other’s children in alternating waves.

Remember that the permutation of various bilateral privilege relationships scales with the equation (N!/(N-2)!)/2

No, polygamy is just an insanely bugged idea.

Exactly. Same-sex marriage changes absolutely nothing—it just expands the eligibility pool by a few percent. Polygamy, box turtles, all that shit, would involve enormous changes in existing laws. These RWNJs are lying their asses off.

We lived by a creek when I was a kid. Whenever the storms would stop, we’d go down to the creek and look at how fast the water was moving. There had been a bridge that I used to cross to walk to high school but it got destroyed so many times by storms they stopped rebuilding it.

Yeah the Bay Area seems pretty consistent weather wise. Not too hot in the summer but not too cold in the winter. One thing I always have enjoyed about Virginia is the four seasons. Munich is beautiful. I liked the Bay Area too but it got a little too cold in the summer for me which normally wouldn’t bother me but that means the water is cold too and being an East coaster all the way, it would take me a while to adjust to the Pacific’s colder waters. The Beach Boys never told us about that in their songs about California. Thanks Brian.//

Gotcha. Yeah I think if I grew up with it, I could get used to it. I’ve been spoiled by east coast waters for sure.

I know, we lived in the east for a few years and it was hard to get used to the idea that the ocean is actually fairly warm in places (other than Hawaii, where it is a little odd, but hey, the tropics are like that.)

Most people would consider Big Sur central coast and not part of the Bay Area. I live in the South Bay (as we call it), which includes San Jose. Gilroy, of garlic fame, is …borderline. I think most people wouldn’t classify that as Bay Area, ultimately.

Santa Cruz is actually considered over the mountains (or over the hill, as is said here) and typically excluded as well from a more local point of view. The culture is certainly very different.

But even Big Sur is warming up, for them.

Never have had that fortunately.

“Oh, fuck!” was what I thought the first time lightning struck very close to me. The hair on my arms stood up just before right before the big, and entirely too long lasting, bolt fed itself into the ground - or vice-versa. That electrified feeling was a lot stronger the second time and I thought, “OH, FUUUUUUUUCK!”

Yeah even up north on the East Coast, the water’s fairly warm in the summers. When I visited my aunt and uncle in the Keys one summer, I didn’t even have to get used to the water. Have to say while I liked the water down there, there’s no waves which is kind of a bummer.

I see. I did wonder about that since looking at a map the Big Sur area definitely looks too North to be Southern California but I wondered if it was north enough to be Bay Area. It looks quite nice. My brother, his wife, and daughter just moved out to Lake Tahoe this past week and when I visit this summer, we’re planning a camping trip to Big Sur or maybe Yosemite. It’s an exciting move for them. I have a feeling he’s going to love Tahoe since he’s an outdoorsy type.

Tahoe is great, although I prefer other parts of the Sierras personally.

Yosemite tends to be extremely crowded in the summer, and it will be pretty dry this summer so the waterfalls will be unimpressive, but everyone should probably see it at some point.

When would you say the best time to go is? I think when my mom and youngest brother visit them they’re going to do Yosemite. Not sure. My brother’s always got ideas though.

Winter.

Definitely winter.

You can’t do the drive over Tioga Pass then, but if you get snow in the valley it is one of the most magical, wonderful experiences.

Maybe early spring when the runoff is starting too but you’re still avoiding the crowds.

I’ll have to bring that up to him then. Though i imagine by the time winter hits Tahoe, he’s going to be into his schoolbooks and on the weekends snowboarding. He showed me an info video on Reno, it looks like a nice little city. They’ve only been gone since Wednesday and I miss them already. I am thankful though that due to things like SkyPE and Facebook, it’s easier to stay in touch now but I am going to miss all three of them especially my niece.

re: #543 HappyWarrior

Spring is best for waterfalls, but that ship has sailed for this year. Just go whenever is convenient for you.
This will be a dry year everywhere in the Sierras. My brother called the ranger station up in the Emigrant Wilderness about the likelihood of having running water in the streams by the end of June. They said it was about 50/50. This is an area which not infrequently is still snow covered at that time of year.

Reno is a fun little city. mr. klys and I have an ongoing joke where when we are unsure what to do at the end of a weekend away but don’t want to go home yet, we drive to Reno.

It looked like there was a lot to do there. I feel like I’d much rather go to Reno than Vegas. I mean Vegas is on my bucket list too but Reno seemed more my kind of place.

I was out there two years ago and it was fantastic. Except for the more famous falls being a trickle running down the rocks.

Pretty lame brushwork. The “dirt” rolls over the edges of the shelves and down the floor, but miraculously, the area of the floor the woman is standing on is pristine. Was this some kid’s first Photoshop project?

I know reading comprehension is hard, but nobody said in the article or the comments that Venezuela’s economy was doing fine. People just pointed out the use of a Photoshopped photo taken in the US.

Only right wing idiots would compare anything Sanders says to Venezuelan socialism. Not that it matters. That’s besides the meme and the talking points.

The linked article said this about Venezuela:

In Venezuela, the shelves are unburdened by “too many” deodorants and shoes and too much soap, milk, or coffee. Food distribution is under military control. The currency of the socialist paradise just collapsed on the black market by 30 percent.

Is this the analysis you call ‘on point’? And support with photos that were actually taken in Venezuela? You mentioned NRO’s ‘questionable ethics’, but your purpose here seems to be support for Michelle Malkin. Otherwise you might consider making a Page about Venezuela, or at least posting on a live thread,

Greetings, hatchling.

Is anyone here claiming that Venezuela has a good economy? The point is that Sanders doesn’t support what NRO calls “Venezuela style socialism”. He’s an admirer of Scandinavian style democratic socialism which is an entirely different animal. The photoshopping is just another bit of shoddiness and dishonesty to accompany the big lie that Sanders is just like Hugo Chavez.
