National Review Pulls Doctored Photo From Michelle Malkin Article Without Explanation or Retraction

Into the memory hole
Wingnuts • Views: 35,703

Yes, folks, today the National Review has quietly removed that doctored 10-year old photo of a Texas Walmart they claimed showed a store in Venezuela: Ask Venezuelans How Sanders-Style Socialism Is Working Out for Them | National Review Online.

(And by the way, it’s absurd to compare Bernie Sanders’ style of socialism with the Venezuelan model; Sanders advocates for something like Nordic capitalism, which does include elements of socialism but bears very little resemblance to Chavez-style socialism.)

Here’s what it looked like yesterday (from the Internet Archive):

And today’s version, minus the cropped and “dirtied up” photo:

I’d say “good on them for doing the right thing,” except they didn’t. The right thing would have been to post a correction and explain why the photo was removed. But this is pretty much how the right wing operates these days: try to pull a fast one, then quietly remove the evidence when it’s called out.

Amazing how the wonders of digital image processing and the Internet have turned journalism back to the days of Harper’s Illustrated, when we had to rely on artists’ engravings to see images of recent events…

Speaking of fake memes, here is the
STUPIDEST MEME OF THE DAY==>
Who is the black guy? Because he is obviously a 19th Century dude and not the “Anthony Johnson” described in the meme.

Because about a third of American slave-owners were black? I guess a third of Confederate soldiers were also black.

Being NRO means never having to apologize or excuse craven and bold faced lies like intentionally misrepresenting altered photos to prove a point (all while being xenophobic and racist to boot).

This is my ONE ripe tomato now:

Dear god…the guy had the air rifle across his shoulders with his hands draped over it.

Michael Russell McCarthy, 58, told NBC News that McBean had the Winchester Model 1000 Air Rifle balanced on his shoulders behind his neck, with his hand over both ends, and was turning around to face police when one officer began shooting.

“He [McBean] couldn’t have fired that gun from the position he was in. There was no possible way of firing it and at the same time hitting something,” McCarthy said. “I kind of blame myself, because if I hadn’t called it might not have happened.”

Thanks. It’s a nice quiet little place.

The sort of place where, quite frankly, nothing much ever happens. Yet where everyone knows everybody else.

And, most likely, what everyone’s up to. :D

It just looks peaceful and friendly.

I don’t know. It’s as if something was…coloring their viewpoint. I don’t see why they race to condemn Venezuela, but not Scandinavia. Something must be prejudicing their opinion.

It seems like it; last time I was here (last Thursday night) I noticed it’s the sort of place where “a lot of people go to bed around here at 10:30 at night” - to quote Jello Biafra.

It is very quiet indeed, and the people are friendly.

As much as I don’t want to see Iran get nuclear weapons (and it would likely mean in short order that the Saudis, Iraqis, and Gulf States attempt to obtain as well - likely from Pakistan, which coincidentally was the source of the plans on which Iran based their enrichment systems), thinking that bombing them out of existence is misguided at best.

We’re not talking about Osirak or even the Syrian reactor, both of which were hit by Israel. Those were single nuclear facilities - above ground and not particularly hardened against air attacks.

The Iranian facilities are known to be buried underground, camouflaged, and located in densely populated areas in some cases or under mountains in others, so as to reduce the chances that a strike would be successful. Further, the Iranians distributed their facilities among multiple sites so that one attack would not take out all of their facilities - you’d need to hit multiple targets in multiple locations in a huge amount of airspace.

The logistics alone of such a raid would be very difficult to achieve.

And compared to Iraq’s ghostly air defense network, Iran’s has been building up and upgrading theirs for years now. There’s a better than zero chance that we’d lose one or more bombers in such a raid, with no guarantee that we’d get 100% of the targets we aimed for. And if we didn’t get everything in one go, we’ve just tipped our hand and ensured that further strikes will encounter massive resistance. The only way to ensure the safety of our bombers would be to hit Iran’s air defense network itself. And if that’s the case, we might as well just go ahead and declare war on Iran, because that’s how they’re going to perceive our actions anyway.

Yeah, that leads me to think he traveled with it from his home state and forgot it was in his day pack or whatever. If I’m being generous he probably intended to drop it off at his apartment or whatever and did forget, so “accident.”

He’s still a fucking idiot for bringing a handgun into DC while only being there on an intern gig. If I were moving to DC I’d spend a lot of time researching all the steps I’d need to take to move my guns legally, get there early and make sure to register them with the local police before starting work at a new job. Either that or just leave them the fuck back in my home state.

I liked Wedding Crashers and Old School and I am looking forward to him in True Detective this season but Vince doesn’t have a clue what the fuck he’s talking about here. Likening a gun to a fucking fork is absurd. And the NRA itself knows guns are dangerous. That’s why they have strict rules on guns at their conventions. I mean if someone wants to be an iindividual idiot and keep lots of guns in their home, I won’t stop them by and large but if you want to bring your gun to a public place and where other people are trying to live, leave that fucking shit at home.

253 Great White Snark  Jun 1, 2015 1:04:47pm

Heh.
How Rand Paul Hijacked Surveillance Reform

I, though, come to bury Caesar, not to praise him. As I explain in the post that follows, Senator Paul’s focus on the substantive validity and wisdom of the phone records program has obscured two larger problems with the USA FREEDOM Act: (1) that it says nothing at all about the government’s other controversial surveillance authorities, especially those carried out pursuant to Executive Order 12,333 and the FISA Amendments Act of 2008; and (2) that its procedural reforms, especially with respect to judicial review by the FISA Court, are laughably modest. These shortcomings could easily be dismissed if it was clear that Congress means to address them in subsequent legislation. But by all accounts, section 215 is-and has been-the ballgame. Thus, Senator Paul’s grandstanding on the call records program may well come to epitomize what I’ve elsewhere described as “libertarian hijacking,” “wherein libertarians form a short-term coalition with progressive Democrats on national security issues, only to pack up and basically go home once they have extracted concessions that don’t actually resolve the real issues.”

Thank you, Admiral Akbar. Without your warning, I never would have known that Windows uses its customers as beta testers.

DC Metro is finally going to start cleaning their rails again. They stopped doing it several decades ago and has recently led to arcing on the rails.
Foresight, how does it work??

Just noticed: How does Admiral Ackbar get his huge forearms through those narrow sleeves?

Its a vacuum fitted emergency suit for different species. It’s deliberately large so it can fit a variety of different species, which then adjusts itself to the wearer for comfort, and capable of becoming an emergency suit in case of vacuum exposure.

“We believe in absolute freedom and individual liberty for everyone who conforms to our beliefs. On the other hand, people who want abortions, same sex marriage or decide to live their lives according to the gender they feel comfortable with are godless abominations who must be destroyed for their own good.”

Making health care more affordable is unnecessarily government intrusion but forcing transvaginal ultrasounds on pregnant women and not allowing transgender people to be who they want to be is peachy.//

They act like he’s the first person to ever pray in professional and/or collegiate sports. Idiots.

How many 15 yard penalties did Tim Tebow get for praying in a game?

One less than Husain Abdullah.

Maybe we can move the Jews to Arizona.

Are they still issuing special watches that you can use to spray hot sauce on a sandwich in an emergency in order to make it mildly palatable?
;)

If they don’t I don’t want to live anymore.
