The Chuck Johnson Saga Takes a Dark Turn

Who impersonated Buzzfeed’s Jessica Testa?
Weird • Views: 32,139

The saga of cyberstalker Chuck C. Johnson takes another dark turn today, as Buzzfeed’s Jessica Testa reports: Someone Impersonated Me to Trick a Sexual Assault Victim.

In a piece for Jezebel, a woman using the name “Josie” wrote about her experiences at Columbia University, when she filed charges for sexual assault against student Paul Nungesser, who was also charged with rape by Emma Sulkowicz. (Nungesser was found guilty of assaulting “Josie,” but later appealed and got the conviction reversed.)

“Josie” published her piece anonymously — and this immediately drew the attention of Chuck C. Johnson, because he’s long been obsessed with outing sexual assault victims, and is especially obsessed with the case of Emma Sulkowicz, tweeting dozens of hateful comments about her.

Here’s a screenshot of a tweet posted by Johnson on May 22:

And on May 23, Johnson tweeted about it again, issuing a clear threat this time (the tweet isn’t available to embed because he was suspended, but this is our text copy of it when it was posted):

Johnson didn’t carry out this threat when he said he would (he was suspended permanently by Twitter the next day, May 24), but the timing of these tweets is very interesting — because shortly after that deadline, in the middle of the night at 1:23 AM on May 25, someone emailed “Josie” with the Gmail account “jtes1984@gmail.com,” claiming to be Buzzfeed reporter Jessica Testa.

Jessica Testa explains:

Josie — a media savvy writer, who once “updogged” writer Cathy Young — was pissed. She didn’t know how I got her name or email address, and she said she felt “betrayed.” She was mad at the Jezebel writer she thought might have given it to me. She was mad at me for the “weird” request, which should have gone through Jezebel — not her directly.

The only thing is: I didn’t email her.

I found out that someone emailed Josie with my name only after Erin Gloria Ryan, the Jezebel editor who published Josie’s story, contacted me. I learned from Ryan that the email to Josie came from “jtes1984@gmail.com,” an address incorporating my Twitter handle — but certainly didn’t belong to me. Until that Monday night, I didn’t know Josie’s real name.

After reading the email, Josie — still thinking it was me — had replied right away: “How did you get my name?” That was at 6:41 p.m. on Monday. Seven hours later, there was a story on GotNews’ website, identifying her by name. When he published her name, Johnson said GotNews.com had obtained Josie’s identity “thanks to some high level sleuthing and the contributions of .” (The sentence doesn’t end.)

Testa emailed Johnson several times about this, receiving very evasive answers:

There was speculation that Johnson was involved, so I asked him if he had anything to do with the posters or their complementary Twitter account @fakerape. (Johnson has also registered the domain fakeraperegistry.com.)

“I thought we were clear,” Johnson replied. “I don’t answer inquiries from a cat pornography site that doxxed an innocent man for exercising his constitutional rights.” (He was referring to a BuzzFeed story from last fall that reported a member of the fraternity at the heart of the Rolling Stone University of Virginia story had hired a lawyer known for representing college men accused of rape.)

“Good luck on your witch hunt,” he wrote. “I wish you nothing but failure.”

I called Johnson on Monday, about a week after learning about the email sent to Josie. He hung up on me as soon as I explained why I was calling. Then he texted me: “As a rule I don’t participated in any interviews with BuzzFeed. Cat pornographers aren’t journalists.” Over text message, I asked him three more times if he impersonated me using the address jtes1984@gmail.com. As before, Johnson didn’t take the opportunity to deny he impersonated me using that email address. He restated his refusal to answer the question. I emailed him again to let him know this story was about to be published.

“Once again I do not answer inquiries from BuzzFeed,” he replied. “I would be very careful if you accuse me of committing a crime with the lack of evidence you’ve presented here.”

But the really interesting part of this shabby story is that if Johnson did send that email impersonating Jessica Testa (and we don’t have conclusive evidence that he did, I must point out), he would have broken the New York law against criminal impersonation.

The law requires there must be “intent to obtain a benefit or to injure or defraud another.” When I told a commercial litigator who’s worked on online crime cases and used to prosecute sex crimes for the Manhattan district attorney’s office about the email, she said she thought an “argument could be made that the email was sent with the intent to defraud [Josie] — certainly to convince her she was disclosing her identity for a purpose that was unintended.”

If the case was taken to them and they found it actionable, prosecutors would likely begin fact-gathering with subpoenas for information about the Gmail user.

“If the person is unsophisticated, they’re sending emails from their home computer,” the former prosecutor said. “But sometimes very sophisticated people are doing this and they have all sorts of means of re-routing and sending the information.”

The crime is a class A misdemeanor, punishable with a $1,000 fine or a year in jail. The lawyer said she couldn’t imagine someone “would be subjected to that extreme a penalty, even if prosecuted.” It may be a crime, but not a very serious one, particularly without threats of violence.

That’s where the story stands at this time. Testa has not contacted prosecutors about the case, although the lawyer she spoke with urged her to do so, and Google probably will not give her any information about that email account without a subpoena. But the connections are difficult to dismiss, and it’s very troubling indeed that someone is impersonating her for the purpose of causing harm to women who speak out against sexual assault.

UPDATE at 6/1/15 5:21:33 pm by Charles Johnson

Wow. And now, according to Buzzfeed’s Ellie Hall, Chuck C. Johnson just essentially confirmed he was the one who sent the impersonation email, with a post on his Facebook page crowing, “The girl’s name is [redacted]. Buzzfeed just confirmed it.” Here’s a screenshot of this Facebook post:

And obviously, the only way he would know this is if he were the one who sent that email, or was closely associated with someone who did. There’s no other way he’d know the name of the person who received it.

That’s an important connection. If the timestamp on the email is Pacific time, it was sent just minutes after Chuck’s deadline.

Watching a couple of Ebay auctions, stuff that I’m sorta interested in, but don’t really need. Both at good prices right now, see how much they move in the last 2 minutes or so.

And if they don’t swing up high, I’ll kick myself for letting them go. If I do bid low and get them, I’ll kick myself for getting things that I’ve already got excess of, and if I bid low and lose, then I’ll feel bad for losing.

I think I’ll go take a shower instead.

Fight when there’s no reason to. Fight when there’s nothing to fight for. Your tormentor may be out of reach, but it’s probably got friends. As a crude analogy I suggested to my sister in law who had itchy sutures that she scratch somewhere else while thinking of the itchy spot. I don’t mean to redirect against a puppy or anything, but find something. Put your foot forward when there’s no where to go. There are still a few hours left to find some good for today, then give tomorrow a chance.

He also believes the string of mass shootings in the US have only happened where there are more restrictions on firearms.

“Take mass shootings,” he said. “They’ve only happened in places that don’t allow guns. These people are sick in the head and are going to kill innocent people. They are looking to slaughter defenceless human beings … In all of our schools it is illegal to have guns on campus, so again and again these guys go and shoot up these … schools because they know there are no guns there. They are monsters killing six-year-olds.”

Charles, it would be helpful if you could detail the chronology of events regarding “Josie” and CCJ’s involvement in outing her.

As I see it:
1. “Josie” writes a piece for Jezebel about her history with Paul Nungesser.
2. CCJ runs story outing her real identity.
3. Someone gets Josie’s email address.
4. Someone impersonates Jessica Testa and gets “Josie” to confirm her true identity.
5. Testa runs story about the impersonation and Josie’s response. CCJ refuses comment on whether he was involved in the fake email.
6. Johnson gloats Buzzfeed/Testa has confirmed Josie’s identity.

Well, the first of the two auctions I’m watching (not bidding) on is over. Price ran from 87 to 116 bucks in the last couple of minutes. Closed right about where I sort of figured it would, high end of what I’d spend, but if I needed it wouldn’t feel like I got a bad deal.

Now the next one….

Speaking of climate, I see the usual ebb and flow of derp over climate change is now centering on the GOP candidates wanting to do in the EPA. That has political legs but they are short legs and I doubt they can carry a candidate to victory.

No GOP candidate can become President without winning at least one of Ohio or Florida, and I think anti-EPA sentiment in those states aren’t as high as say in TX.

Given the US is still leasing massive coal fields I doubt that anything any candidate will do can be effective on this issue.

I suspect that 2016 will be won or lost on the economy. If we don’t slip into a recession then there just won’t be the heat for a GOP candidate to exploit for a Dem candidate, even against Hillary Clinton.

re: #160 Charles Johnson

I don’t know who’s telling the truth in the Sulkowicz-Nungesser story. But Sulkowicz isn’t the only person who’s filed complaints against Nungesser.

And Ivy League schools like Columbia have a huge incentive to downplay and discount reports of campus rape.

Either way one can entertain significant doubts while still unilaterally condemning those who stalk and harass the accusers. If justice is what Louise wants then she should be willing to let the justice system met it out. It cuts both ways, if there was enough evidence to charge Emma with lying / filing a false report, she’d have been charged with that.

It’s about 3 AM in London right now.

Here’s a fun thing to do while in London: jump back and forth across the Greenwich Meridian Line exactly three times, spit in the air, and ask the nearest local where they hang out.

I’ve always been too busy pub crawling to try that out in London, but in theory and practice this system has worked for me from Oslo to New Orleans. Even when it didn’t it was at least enlightening.

re: #162 Kragar

Apparently guns are magical devices which ward off roofies and prevent rape by coercion and abuse of authority

Here’s a typical “conversation” with a gun fucker:

BABUSHKA: How does a gun protect against a roofie?

GUNFUCKER: HURR HURR! TEH RAPIST WILL SEE TEH RAPE WHISTLE GUN & FIND A DIFFERENT VICTIM!!!!!

BABUSHKA: What if he just thinks the gun is a challenge? WHAT IF HE ALSO HAS A GUN?

GUNFUCKER: HURR HURR THEN THEIR EQUALS!!!!!

Clearly, the “rape whistle” is not meant to be used against rich white college boys, just dark strangers who lurk in the alley and the stairwell.

Actually, Chuck’s story wasn’t posted until May 26 - after the impersonation email.

I’d like a photo of McCain bowing down before the graves of all those who’ve died and those who’ve been maimed in drunken accidents, in cars or at home, from buying liquor from his in-law’s liquor distributing company. Wouldn’t that be funny?

Actually, not really. I’m from Arizona, and I know a bit about those sanctimonious conservatives in their beautifully designed Sedona lairs.

Yeah, but it’s Coors, the righteous American patriot brand, made with pure Rocky Mountain horse piss spring water. Just imagine how bad it would be if the commies take over and the yokels are all careening around on cheap vodka and fluoridated water. Of course in that case, the proles wouldn’t have pickups or SUVs either so the damage might actually be less.

I was just bumming around a couple summers ago and stopped at Motoprimo in Burnsville and kind of fell in love with the looks of a Triumph Bonneville. It fit me perfectly and was so pretty to look at, I was soooo tempted.

Some guy in the shop saw me sitting on the bike and came over to tell me that I looked like that bike was built just for me. I’m kind of a big bear of a guy, balding and bearded and going very grey, but not Harley material. My jacket was normal but distressed moss green suede walking jacket.

I ran into the guy at a convenience store just down from the shop. He was coming out of the store when I pulled up on my red Kymco 250cc scooter. He didn’t say a thing but I could tell I’d nuked all of my cool.

I’m pretty happy with the scooter. I don’t want to be buying my first real motorcycle at age 60. Too many old boomers get killed on their new two-wheeled toys.

276 Dark_Falcon  Jun 1, 2015 9:13:31pm

I’m off to watch some stuff I’ve recorded, but I want to post this BBC piece about the war against Daesh (ISIS). It’s very good and it has details on Ramadi and what happened there I’ve not seen anywhere in the states.

Islamic State PR gloss masks Iraqi forces’ gains

There wasn’t the slightest truth in it. For a start, the most humiliating aspect of Ramadi’s capture from the Iraqi government’s point of view was that it was done by only 150 Islamic State fighters, who put 1,500 soldiers to flight.

Those 150, even though they were soon reinforced by a few hundred other fighters, were in no position to defend Ramadi and attack Baghdad as well.

Furthermore, it soon became clear that Ramadi fell because the judgement and willpower of one man, the brigadier in command of the city, had been weakened by exhaustion, and perhaps fear.

He had stayed at his post in Ramadi for months, under siege from Islamic State, and was eventually tricked into believing that IS was on the point of using immensely destructive explosive devices in the city centre. He ordered his men to get out as fast as they could.

It was clever of IS, and hugely effective; but it was scarcely a major military victory.

But at the same time, I’m also compelled to post this link as a counter:

ISIS kills 34 Iraqi police with explosive-laden tank, officials say

I’ll make sure to read any replies.

There is serious truth there and you are wise to respect it. I’ve been without a real bike for 12 years now but I’d probably still hop on one and go while you’d need to learn almost everything - those scooters are different.

That said, I’d commit many a sin for a new Bonneville to replace the ‘77 750cc one that was the first bike I ever owned back in 1984.

Wow. And now, according to Buzzfeed’s Ellie Hall, Chuck C. Johnson just confirmed he was the one who sent the impersonation email, with a post on his Facebook page crowing, “The girl’s name is [redacted]. Buzzfeed just confirmed it.” Here’s a screenshot of this Facebook post:

And obviously, the only way he would know this is if he were the one who sent that email, or was closely associated with someone who did. There’s no other way he’d know the name of the person who received it.

Charles, while I agree that the probability that Chuck was behind it (whether directly or through a toady) is huge, and in fact the only plausible explanation, this particular argument proves nothing. As I pointed out on a previous thread, BuzzFeed directly confirmed that Chuck’s article correctly identified the woman (e.g. “Seven hours later, there was a story on GotNews’ website identifying her by name. When he published her name…”, etc.). Before Buzzfeed’s article it was but a crazy loon’s speculation. After it it has become a confirmed fact, so basically this Buzzfeed author doxxed her for the second time. And on an (unlikely) hypothesis that it wasn’t Chuck behind the email, this confirmation by Buzzfeed would be indeed how Chuck would know he got the name right.

Good to be home. And Chuck Johnson is still an asshole in dire need of an ass-whupping.

303 Charles Johnson  Jun 1, 2015 11:17:54pm

re: #301 Nyet

But you’re missing an important point - when Chuck wrote his original post he didn’t identify this woman in particular. He named four women and said it was one of those four. He only started crowing that her identity was confirmed after Buzzfeed published the screenshot of the email and her reply. And he could only have known which of the four women it named if he were the one who sent the email and received the reply.

304 Charles Johnson  Jun 1, 2015 11:21:01pm

This is what Chuck wrote:

She is most likely one of these four girls: Sylvia Krekow, BC ‘13, Jessica Madris BC ‘13, Jess Sims, BC ‘13, and Molly Speacht, BC ‘13. (Speacht shared the Jezebel story on her Facebook page and said that she knew who it was but that it was not her.)

So yes - he identified her by name as the Buzzfeed article said, but he also identified three other women by name as possibly “Josie.”

No, he explicitly identified her in the first para:

Meet […], the girl who wrote Jezebel’s Anonymous post and who appears to have lodged yet another sexual impropriety accusation against Paul Nungesser at Columbia University.

The rest is how he got to her name, which would have been but a crazy speculation if BF did not go and doxx her for the second time. I’m not missing any point. The argument doesn’t work.

re: #307 Charles Johnson

Excuse me?

He clearly wrote that it was one of those four women. That’s a direct quote from his post.

You are ignoring the whole context, which is that he identifies her as S.K. in every single other paragraph. He only mentions the four girls to exclude three of them. BuzzFeed confirmed that S.K. is indeed the one.

Chuck published an article in which he presented his “find” as a result of mere analysis/sleuthing, excluding three girls out of the group of four and positively identifying Josie as S.K. (but still leaving it in the realm of speculations).

BuzzFeed said that he correctly identified her.

Chuck saw the Buzzfeed piece and boasted about the confirmation, referring to his GotNews piece (which is also how we know it’s not any other of the four names, since that piece still identifies S.K. as Josie).

Nowhere does the argument about “how would Chuck know the name if he didn’t write the email” come in. There was only one name of the four that Chuck explicitly chose.

310 Charles Johnson  Jun 1, 2015 11:43:22pm

re: #309 Nyet

Again, the quote:

She is most likely one of these four girls…

He didn’t write “I found these four girls and narrowed it down to one,” he wrote “She IS most likely one of these four.”

That’s a clear statement. Yes, he did focus on one for most of his post, but he also stated clearly that there were 3 other possibilities.

And the line about confirmation that now appears at the top of the post is a clear indication that he had NOT confirmed her identity before seeing the Buzzfeed article.

Anyway, I’m done arguing about it. You’re jumping to a conclusion that he “excluded” three of the women, when his post says no such thing.

re: #310 Charles Johnson

Again, the quote:

He didn’t write “I found these four girls and narrowed it down to one,” he wrote “She IS most likely one of these four.”

That’s a clear statement. Yes, he did focus on one for most of his post, but he also stated clearly that there were 3 other possibilities.

Yes, Chuck is not a good writer, we all know it. That was his way of explaining how he got to the name through “sleuthing”. Name 4 girls and exclude three of them. It’s not a statement about the equal probability of them being Josie at present (despite the present tense).

Meet …, the girl who wrote Jezebel’s Anonymous post and who appears to have lodged yet another sexual impropriety accusation against Paul Nungesser at Columbia University. [Update: There’s some legitimate debate about how she accused Nungesser of “sexual assault” under Columbia’s over broad policy.]

She wrote the following article about how she was allegedly sexually harassed by Nungesser.

It’s anonymous so we decided to name her.

K… works as a producer at NowThis News.

K… works at as a producer here.
gotnews.com has obtained K…’s identity thanks to some high level sleuthing and the contributions of .

S… K…
K…’s Facebook profile
The first mention of K… is as Josie in this article on a Columbia website.

Note that K… used to work for BWOG, a student publication of Columbia.

She’s described as a member of Barnard College’s Class of 2013 and as a part of the Alpha Delta Phi Society. She is most likely one of these four girls: […]. (Speacht shared the Jezebel story on her Facebook page and said that she knew who it was but that it was not her.)

In K…’s Jezebel article she describes herself as tall and athletic, a trait that isn’t present in any of the other girls. (K… was a rower.)

K… also describes wanting to be a writer, again a trait unique to her. Even though Columbia initially found Paul Nungesser responsible K… withdrew her complaint when he appealed.

The bolded parts are where he positively, without any qualifiers, identifies S.K. The rest is what you quoted.

He did not present these 4 as equally likely. He explicitly excluded 3 of them. He positively identified S.K. as Josie throughout the article. Hanging this whole argument on Chuck Johnson’s “is” while ignoring the rest of the context is not the way to proceed.

In the end: Chuck did make a positive “certain” identification, not a mere probable one. That one out-of-context sentence does not mean he presented the other 3 as equally probable.

I think we can all agree that Chuck is a terrible writer and person.

Honestly the “She is most likely …” paragraph reads like an inclusion from an earlier draft that he never edited to make sense after he started focusing on the one.

The rest is how he got to her name, which would have been but a crazy speculation if BF did not go and doxx her for the second time.

I get your point Sergey but think it’s a little harsh to phrase is as BF “doxxing” her. She chose to contact Testa to clear it up. She chose to do that without demanding “deep background” rules. She could have done that, I have in the past when contacting reporters with information I think might by worthy of investigation but that should not be published itself. Testa didn’t publish her name. Yes it’s unfortunate that it served as a confirmation, but she seems to have resigned herself to that going in.

If you mean this line - “Update: There was some debate below as to whether or not we got the right girl. We did.” - it was there before the article. But your statement would also mean that he didn’t have anything to do with the email, since receiving that mail from S.K. would be the confirmation for Chuck, not the BF article.

I’m not jumping to any conclusion. He explicitly identified one and only one woman as Josie. There is no debate about that. It’s in the text.

Assuming you mean the Buzzfeed article, you sure about that?

re: #314 goddamnedfrank

Yes, Chuck is a terrible writer - so bad that he’ll write a whole post clamimg it’s one woman, but then toss in a sentence that shows he really didn’t know that at all.

No, it was not. He added that line after the Buzzfeed article.

To the rest of the world it looked like speculation until BuzzFeed had to go and confirm it.

re: #319 Charles Johnson

No, it was not. He added that line after the Buzzfeed article.

No, I saw it before then, a few days ago. It appeared concurrently with the “update” in square brackets in the body of the article.

322 Charles Johnson  Jun 2, 2015 12:14:43am

Note also that her reply to Chuck does NOT confirm she was “Josie” - it simply says “How did you get my name?”

That’s not a confirmation she wrote the article at all - it’s what anyone might reply to such an email, even if they didn’t write the article.

323 Charles Johnson  Jun 2, 2015 12:23:26am

re: #314 goddamnedfrank

I agree - she obviously realized that by speaking to Testa she’d be confirming she was the author, but felt it was important to expose the unethical (and possibly criminal) impersonation.

324 Nyet  Jun 2, 2015 12:24:54am

re: #322 Charles Johnson

Which underscores the fact that Buzzfeed was the first one to confirm Chuck’s speculation with certainty. Bad idea.

325 Nyet  Jun 2, 2015 12:32:06am

I think it was the buzzfeed author’s duty to explain to SK that heretofore it was some weirdo’s musings on the web and that a BF item would make it a fact. SK clearly expressed her wish for further anonymity, but was apparently under impression that once the name was out, it was over. I’m not saying she’s naive etc., but she was clearly stressed over the situation and maybe not thinking straight. The BF author should have been the cooler head.

Charlie Daniels

Charlie is now 78 years old.

Charlie Daniels has definitely moved on from being a Jimmy Carter supporter during the Carter presidential campaign.

In person, unlike a lot of C&W talent, Charlie Daniels is still a nice guy.

Yeah that will be fun. Really I don’t see how this is supposed or will help prevent shootings at all.

Be interesting how the budget item for the initial and “keep up to date” weapons training for the school officials goes over. They’d be better off issuing them tiger-repelling rocks.
