Hate to go OT so early but is this sister who alleges that Hasert molested her brother the Victim-B who prosecutors didn’t have enough info to bring about charges or someone new all together. If I missed in the original story, I’m sorry but I didn’t see. I know he’s not the victim-A that Hasert was making payments to that brought up the charges.

What’s the purpose of these fake Twitter accounts randomly following people? Are they some kind of tracker to see what kind of “promoted” Tweets to slip into your time line?

I think they expect a “Follow for follow” because if they have followers, they seem more legit

She also went to the media (ABC) with the story, but they couldn’t care less probably because they feared losing access to GOP bigwigs if they ran with it.

Not to defend ABC’s (or any other “MSM“‘s) sensibilities of journalistic ethics when it comes to bigwigs, but Jolene Burdge’s claims about her brother Steven Reinboldt being sexually abused by Denny Hastert at Yorkville High might not have passed the suspicion test when first floated back on 2006. Unfortunately, the victim was dead by then, and had never come forward with any allegations out of a sense of not being believed (understandably), and ABC supposedly shelved any investigation for lack of corroboration. Said corroboration now being more credible, as the alleged victim’s sister has testified to the FBI.

Oh yeah there was a reason why Herman Cain who never has been elected to anything polled better in the GOP than a successful two term governor who served as ambassador to China. Want to say he had an ambassadorship in the early 90’s in H.W Bush’s presidency too. Huntsman impressed me a lot as I was taking a course on China at the time and he didn’t treat China the way Romney did as a stereotypical boogeyman.

Our HS commencement speaker was obviously no one famous but nearly ten years later it’s still stayed with me because he talked about ambition and used a wonderful story about it turns out one of my favorite broadcasters, Jon Miller about how he would record himself broadcasting games. In the quoted material, Ann Coulter did not suggest stripping US citizenship from someone if they become blind or disabled.

She suggested that US immigration policies that make provisions for naturalizing blind or disabled people were wrong. I disagree strongly with this position, but this is not advocacy of eugenics.

It was yet another example of how painfully out of touch he was. It may not have been as mean and condescending as the infamous 47% comment but it came from the same “I’ve gotten where I’ve gotten in life since my Daddy was a wealthy businessman and later governor and think I got there through my own hard work” attitude that he has. To rephrase Ann Richards or Molly Ivins, Mitt was born being carried off the field and he thinks he hit the game winning grand slam.

All in the course of a little over a year and a half span. And they still are denying her disability.

Fuck them. I know guys that get it for a bad back and they still cut their lawn, go fishing, go golfing, haul shit around all day. Back in the day, demagogues weren’t allowed to run unchecked. For example, Father Coughlin en.wikipedia.org was finally suppressed when the Feds cut a deal with Coughlin’s bishop that included an episcopal order forbidding Coughlin from engaging in his political activities. Prior to that, the Feds instituted licensing requirements for radio stations, and were looking into revoking second class mail privileges for Coughlin’s printed material, both with the purpose of shutting Coughlin down.

Somehow these past infringements of the first amendment don’t fill me with a sense of injustice done.

YMMV, but I recommend avoiding the slippery slope argument here, even though Ann Coulter deserves it as much as anyone ever has.

The reason is this: Open advocacy of killing off the “useless mouths” will most likely be one of the earliest warning signs of true fascism in the US right, and will probably start being seen relatively soon as the GOP continues its downward slide. They really are remarkably close to it right now.

It would be dangerous for that warning sign to get missed or dismissed as ‘both sides slinging mud at each other’ because of prior similar claims that are more ambiguous.

You know, in reading that wiki entry on Coughlin and again familiarizing myself to his politics, I can see that man back in business today. Would he be a more fiery Bernie Sanders, a more liberal and sensible Ron Paul?

And then when you actually assess his stance I would wager certain groups today would once again have no problems with shutting him up.

And, many of those groups would be fine going against first amendment rights for someone like him once again. And if anyone reads his politics, they can probably guess who those groups would be and the flip-flopping needed.

Thanks for the reminders!

Although the same genes are passed down through generations, scientists now know that our DNA is being altered all the time by environment, lifestyle and traumatic events. It is thought that these changes drive disease, premature ageing and early death.

However it was believed that these faults could not be passed on to future generations, with the slate essentially being wiped clean.4

But now scientists at University of Cambridge have found that in some areas of DNA, including those linked to mental illness and obesity, some of the faults remain. More

A buddy of mine is a dog trainer/exerciser. He was at a park on the northwest side of Columbus working with a young lab.

He said there were two guys in the park with drones and a bunch of equipment. It appeared to him like the one guy was showing the other how to fly a drone and use the equipment. Sounded like it was a heck of a setup. They even appeared to have stands with Ipads or the like so that they could fly and view the camera on the drone.

My friend said the guy learning was all out of control at times and was a danger to the people in the park.

The fact that the guys didn’t seem to think of the fact there were other people around and to maybe take their stuff somewhere else got us to talking about all the laws that are going to have to come with drone technology.

You’d think people would think of some of the negatives, but no…too into the toy and fashion of the new thing. So, legislatures have to fix it and when they do comes all the bitching about being unfair, heavy-handed, hurting new businesses, etc.

How long before there are drone zones and levels of licensing? Not long…

Epigenetic changes have been known for a while now. If one peruses the literature it appears as if some changes are indeed reset at miosis but others are not.

The changes which are passed down to the child may or may not be expressed in some discernible way in the life of the child. And these changes may not be passed down to the grandchildren.

On the other hand, genetic changes can occur from various chemicals/elements. Any changes such to a part of the chromosome can be passed down to children and future generations. This latter has been known for quite some time.

The Telegraph article does not go into detail about the differences (of the above), but mass media tends to shy away from molecular biology (and molecular anything for that matter.)

I believe the Telegraph is referring to the growing body of evidence that lifestyles cause epigenetic changes that children then inherit. This is being raised now in terms of social inequality because poor people often live in more polluted surroundings and with more life-threatening stress, and these may affect DNA expression and this is then inherited by the children, thus the children are indeed physically (molecularly) inheriting the status of the parents.

re: #157 ObserverArt

Not long…

re: #166 Great White Snark

If you look at R/C airplane clubs they already have this down. Designated airspace, rules, helpful people. That’s where to learn to fly them. Certainly way out there somewhere kinda like where we might do some archery or ride ATV’s with some abandon.

Drones get this extra hostile reaction as compared to kites and model airplanes or helicopters. Who gets mad at a model plane?

Agreed. I think where the differences might be is that people are going to want to use their drones for things like photography and video recording, plotting, spying and who knows what all.

RC airplanes guys are perfectly happy just to fly. And like you said to do it at their designated airports and fields. And yes, they have already been through the wars of being accepted.

Well, I’m not sure “civilization” is what he really meant, and even if he did that’s not quite right either. I guess it depends upon what one thinks of as “civilization”, but the first gathering into locales (towns or religious centers) now looks to be around 10,000 years ago. Glyphs likewise are ancient, even if written languages didn’t develop to much later.

But other things - burials and death rites, music and arts of various forms, inventions, etc., are quite a bit older than 10,000 years.

But as wrenchwrench points out, the real kicker is his failure to acknowledge the changes that have happened that allow/force young people today to live very different lives than those 5000 years ago.

A Los Angeles police officer accused of kicking a woman in the groin during a 2012 arrest captured on video by a police cruiser camera was found guilty Friday of assault under color of authority.

The prosecution’s case centered on the video recording, which showed Officer Mary O’Callaghan jab at Alesia Thomas’ throat with an open hand and threaten to break her arms and kick her in the genitals. In the video, O’Callaghan then raises her boot and strikes Thomas, whose body shakes in response.

Arrest video played in trial of LAPD officer accused in woman’s death
The recording captured Thomas - who asked officers for an ambulance more than 30 minutes before one was called - breathing heavily and repeatedly saying, “I can’t.”

A few minutes later, Thomas, a 35-year-old mother, loses consciousness. A video from a dashboard camera in a different patrol car - also played during the trial - shows O’Callaghan smoking a cigarette as she peeks inside the car at Thomas, whose legs were tied with a nylon hobble restraint.

Towards the end of the Neolithic period, various Chalcolithic civilizations began to rise in various “cradles” from around 3300 BCE. Chalcolithic Civilizations, as defined above, also developed in Pre-Columbian Americas and, despite an early start in Egypt, Axum and Kush, much later in Iron Age sub-Saharan Africa. The Bronze Age collapse was followed by the Iron Age around 1200 BCE, during which a number of new civilizations emerged, culminating in the Axial Age transition to Classical civilization. A major technological and cultural transition to modernity began approximately 1500 CE in western Europe, and from this beginning new approaches to science and law spread rapidly around the world.[14]

And this is why death penalty is horrible:

slate.com

North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory granted pardons of innocence Thursday to Henry McCollum and Leon Brown, two mentally disabled half-brothers exonerated last September of a 1983 murder for which they have served three decades in prison. Superior Court Judge Douglas Sasser last fall ordered the men to be released from death row after DNA evidence implicated another man, and after it became clear that the two had falsely confessed during highly coercive police questioning. As noted in our coverage at the time, the state also declined to test evidence that could have cleared the suspects, and it wasn’t until 2010, when the North Carolina Innocence Inquiry Commission got involved in the case, that the potentially exculpatory evidence was re-examined seriously. At the time of his release, McCollum was North Carolina’s longest-serving inmate on death row.

203 Nyet  Jun 5, 2015 3:49:08pm

re: #202 Nyet

Note that it was a “sure” case… right until it was debunked.

McCollum’s case was personally name-checked by Justice Antonin Scalia in an unrelated death penalty case 20 years ago.[…] Scalia tartly noted that far more horrific and brutal cases frequently came to the court, writing “for example, the case of an 11-year-old girl raped by four men and then killed by stuffing her panties down her throat. How enviable a quiet death by lethal injection compared with that!”

Problem is that so many of the cases being overturned today are from decades ago. By now, the people involved have either retired or died. And the most those who came after them can do is offer an apology, because they refuse to take responsibility for fear that it will help any civil cases brought against them.

IMO, the only legitimate debate would be an academic/philosophical consideration of what circumstances (if any) would make a death penalty appropriate. This could be viewed as a waste of time.

As applied in practice in the US (and everywhere else in the world), capital punishment is totally indefensible.

That’s because they’ve come up with a convenient excuse: “The technology is better today, so I feel confident that they’re not putting innocent people in prison!” That the existence of DNA and better methods of gathering evidence makes them feel confident that only the guilty are going to prison.

And any time I point out that people living long enough to be exonerated means that there were those who were likely executed long ago and the cases buried by governments afraid to be caught having executed an innocent man, they clam up or try to argue that going forward, we can just be more careful.

That’s what it’s all about.”

“The Second Amendment,” he continued, “is not about hunting, it’s not about target shooting, it’s about Democrats who want to take our rights.”

Raise the alarm! Raise the alarm!

REPORT: SOCIAL SECURITY OVERPAID DISABILITY BENEFITS BY $17B

hosted.ap.org

WASHINGTON (AP) — Social Security overpaid disability beneficiaries by nearly $17 billion over the past decade, a government watchdog said Friday, raising alarms about the massive program just as it approaches the brink of insolvency.

Many payments went to people who earned too much money to qualify for benefits, or to those no longer disabled. Payments also went to people who had died or were in prison.

In all, nearly half of the 9 million people receiving disability payments were overpaid, according to the results of a 10-year study by the Social Security Administration’s inspector general.

(snip)

“Social Security provides services to over 48 million retirement and survivors beneficiaries and about 15 million disability beneficiaries,” Social Security spokesman Mark Hinkle said in an email. “The agency will issue nearly $1 trillion in payments this year. For fiscal year 2013 - the last year for which we have complete data - approximately 99.8 percent of all Social Security payments were free of overpayment, and nearly 99.9 percent were free of underpayment.” (my emphasis)

They seem more upset that people are viewing their family in a negative light than what Josh did. Image is everything to this cult.

368 stpaulbear  Jun 5, 2015 6:22:47pm

I promised myself a treat if I could keep one good habit until the end of the month. The good habit would pay for the treat. My birthday is at the end of the month so it’s my present to myself, and kind of an early (well, 3.5 years early) retirement present. It’s not a lavish treat but I’m on a tight budget. It’s locally made so it’s cool.

I’m really tempted to just order it this weekend so I have it for my birthday, and then try to keep the good habit for the rest of the month.

Should I stick to the original plan or just go ahead and order it now?

(We can talk about this while simutaneously being revulsed by the Duggars)

No disrespect to the Bunkers. Just riffing off the sad-sack ‘entertainment’ that TV has become with crap like the Duggars.

Archie would be horrified if anyone abused someone he loved.

Wasn’t Edith assaulted in an episode? My Grandfather used to watch, but I can barley remember.

(I can rationalize an awful lot.)

((Even I can’t rationalize the bullshit the Duggars are trying.))

How about Locked Up with Jim Bob and Michelle? Show Jim Bob having a swastika tattooed on his ass. Fun for the whole family.

I want to see a spin-off show where they set up a house for all of the Duggar daughters far away from AK, and then slowly introduce them to the real world, get them some help, and get them deprogrammed. That would be a show worth watching.

What I really want to know is whether or not TLC is going to bring this show back. If they do, we need to fund Mama June’s eventual lawsuit to bring back the Honey Boo Boo show.

If TLC does bring this show back, then nothing short of a nationwide cable/satellite cancellation is in order until all the cable/satellite carriers drop TLC.

And Fox News while we’re at it.

As a Catholic schooled kid in the 60s, i’m trying to see any priest or nun buying these explanations.

And I mean how the religious fundies surrounding the Duggars and the family itself are acting within their religious teachings. That is some screwed up thinking. And a lot of Evangelical and other fundamentalists have problems with Catholics for being too liberal and easy as a religion.

Tell me about it.

There’s a canvas & leather luggage company just a mile from my house called J W Hulme. I pass it every day on the way to work. Their bags used to be a bit pricey but not outrageous until they got discovered by the 1%ers. Now it costs $650 for a basic portfolio bag.
