Announcing the New LGF RSS Feed Reader

We have a new toy today, for all LGF readers to play with: a shiny new RSS feed reader. And there’s a button at the top of the right sidebar that will take you there.

This new page takes the place of the RSS feeds widget that’s been in our left sidebar for a long time, and it has some major advantages; you can now see a whole page worth of news items for each feed in the list, and if there are images included in the feed you’ll see those as well.

If you click the text that says “RSS feeds” on the top line, the page will reload; and every time you reload the page it randomly chooses one of the feeds to display. Feeds are cached for 30 minutes, but if you want to make sure you’re looking at the most current version of a feed you can hit the “Reload” button.

The code uses some Javascript magic to automatically reflow the feed items if you resize the window, fitting as many as possible within the window’s current viewport. (I spent more time than I’ll ever admit resizing the window over and over this afternoon just to see the cool animation effect as the news items shuffle around for the best fit.)

Right now, there’s a preset list of several dozen popular news sites and blogs to choose from, but possible future enhancements include allowing registered users to set up their own list of feeds.

Enjoy! (And be informed.)

If Godly means acting like sexual assault is no big deal but continue to hate on gay people than I don’t want to more “Godly” people like how Megyn wants it. I feel sorry for Jill and Jessa. I really do but it’s wrong of them go on TV and say this isn’t a big deal and try to mitigate the crime.

I see Pharyngula on the RSS list. Looks like it’s coming from Scienceblogs. Should it be pulled from freethoughtblogs.com instead (although it looks like PZ is keeping the Scienceblogs page linked).

A poem:

Locks on doors
Brother’s sly,
Locks on doors
Baby sis is shy.

Locks on doors
Send them to camp,
Locks on doors
Lena’s the true tramp.

Locks on doors
Dad did try,
Locks on doors
Why you make baby Jesus cry?

I’m seriously thinking bout going to see it tomorrow, and THEN if it’s as hilarious as I think it will be, I’ll see it AGAIN on Sunday! I mean I did see The Heat in theatres 2x and I saw Bridesmaids 2x too!

Here’s the 2nd trailer for the film, I love the part at the end, where she asks the dude if he was gonna cry…lol

Also too, the film apparently has a 95% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes!

And that post ignores that Jessa and Jill aren’t his only victims and the fact that the Duggars covered the thing fucking up. Bob and Chez’ remarks on their podcast really make the Duggars’ problem clear: they live inside such an isolated bubble that they have no comprehension why other people are revolted by Josh’s behavior and his parents’ reactions to it. When you lose people who would nominally be your allies (Huckabee and Keith Ablow, for example), you have really screwed the pooch. But Jim Bob and MIchelle just don’t get it. They’re living in a fantasy land where a teenaged boy feeling up his sisters is just youthful exploration and not a big deal.

“Hey, You Awake?” … Dugger foreplay.

In a semi-serious note, my beloved Nexus 7 (2012) had decided to crack its screen while sitting quietly in it’s case. Now the digitizer is shot as well. It was fine this morning, spent all day safe and secure, and when I went to use it this evening it was cracked.

I really like it, but it only cost me 100 bucks from a friend, and I’m not sure that getting it fixed is going to be cost effective. It’s been a bit squirrely ever since the Android 5.x updates came out.

Should I go over to the dark side? Maybe an Apple Ipad Mini 2? About the same size, just a smidge wider and a 1/2 smidge taller. From what I’ve read, it sounds like a hell of a device.

Of course, I’m sure some (read that most) of my friends will remind me of statements I’ve made like “Apples are for eating, not computing”.

Any testimonials on the Ipad Mini? Main uses will be web browsing, email, general light-weight use. I’d be looking at a Wi-Fi only version, that’s what my Nexus was, and if I HAVE to connect where there isn’t a hot-spot, my phone can turn into one.

Thanks in Advance.

Something I’m seeing pointed out at other sites is that the girls basically followed their parents example of making a lie of omission. They tried to word their statements to make it seem as though Josh’s molestation of them had stopped after the first time he went to his parents. Yet his folks just admitted on Wednesday that it didn’t stop, it went on for over a year before they did something about it, and he went further than just feeling them up while they slept.

I swear, it was like watching abused spouses swear that hubby is a good man, that every time he hits them it’s because they didn’t do what they were supposed to do, and that people are making so much of a fuss about something that happens in every family.

Dennis may not even be gay or bi. It may simply be a power thing with him. He didn’t have access to female students the way he did males. From what I’ve read all the alleged victims have been people associated with the wrestling team and not students he actually taught.

I’m tracking with you on that. I may swing by Best Buy tomorrow after I get done at the shop, play with one for a bit. (and even buy it there, since Apple controls the price pretty tightly) I know they have them in stock, I’ve checked online.

I think ultimately that’s your best call.

There’s not a ton in the small Android tablet space right now that I know of, but I haven’t been terribly on top of things since my Nexus is still chugging along well enough for development purposes, and I still use a laptop for things like web and email.

That always made me bristle. I’m too much an individual.

Well the lambs (sheep) are again being led.

I think he did in an earlier spot I saw him with Chris Hayes this week where he points out that the house Republcian leadership was going after Clinton for a consensual affair and they had this in their closet. But yeah I hope he did too. I think Hasert targeted boys since it was easier to get them in that kind of situation. As I said, he really would have had little contact with the female students outside of class. But the male wrestlers? He would have been taking them on trips outside the school, to hotels, would be in the locker room with them, etc.

Okay, seriously, let’s back this up a sec. The identities of the victims were at best the subject of speculation prior to Wednesday. Nobody had any idea who was involved, all they had was ages and snippets of descriptions upon which were hung theories as to the identities. It was the family who chose to identify these two daughters as victims and make them available to Fox News for exploitation.

Conservatives love to trumpet their ideology as being morally superior to liberalism whether it’s because conservatives tend to be more religious, socially conservative, or whatever but I’m seeing many conservatives whose first instinct when a conservative does something deplorable is to make excuses or worst try to blame the left or victims.

I had heard that the names came out because once the police reports came out everyone in Arkansas knew who the reports referred to. They obviously thought they needed to get out in front of it due to everyone figuring it all out anyway, so the whole thing grew big quick.

The whole thing seems like a bad crime drama, where the guilty party screamed out “You ain’t got nothing on me hurting that woman!,” only for the detective to remark that he never said the victim was a woman.

Was Chuck Johnson just the first to be purged? Notice how @_DHMapplethrope was forced to delete tweets about social justice warrior, Cassie J. Sneider. Sneider was mocked for her article about “manspreading”-that is, when men sit on the train and spread their legs.

She was dutifully mocked.

Here’s what happened.

When will the censorship end?

Of course, in the original post, none of the tweets show up (unlike here, as you can see above) due to poor programming, I assume. A screenshot:

I rate this a FAIL.

Somebody pointed out that the desperation in the way the Duggars are trying to salvage their reputations probably has to do with the reality that if TLC pulls the plug, there’s just no way for them to remain financially above water for very long. Their clan has been surviving on hand-outs for so long that if all the sweet, sweet ad money disappears, they have no way to make up the difference.

Obama is often caricatured as aloof and professorial, with a poorly-concealed arrogance, while Biden is Biden, prolix, comic both intentionally and inadvertently, self-effacing and engaging to a fault. Given these differences, it’s easy to assume that their declarations of mutual affections are for show. But Ron Klain, Biden’s former chief of staff, who later served as Obama’s coordinator on the administration’s response to the Ebola threat, said there is more to it. “The president … has this reputation for being cold or distant—but he isn’t,” Klain said. “For the people in his orbit, the people he has a chance to get to know, he has a real sense of family” and the Bidens “are part of that. I think it’s a loss that he feels personally.” Ted Kaufman, Biden’s close friend and longtime Senate aide, said that “the president has been incredibly supportive, in every possible way, during this.”

Obama’s an introvert.

Because their standard is Bill Clinton, Ronald Reagan, and GWB, who would shake anyone’s hand, offer them cigars, and give shoulder rubs. A president being close to a small group of people doesn’t fit their definition of a president. Aloof is the only word they have for not needing to fill the silence with talking.

The Right Wing’s mental illness means they see things absolutely differently than we see them. It rises to the level of hallucination, really. We see a warm, friendly family man, they see a cold, aloof elitist. We see a natural orator giving a rousing, eloquent speech, they see an illiterate trying and failing to read simple copy off a Teleprompter. Seriously, seeing things that aren’t there is a psychological symptom.

Last bit of good news for me tonight. I was supposed to go to DFW in July for my youngest sister’s wedding. But she changed her mind about having a big to do and decided to go minimal (small ceremony) and just visit NOLA for a big party with the whole fam. So I had to cancel the trip.

Now I have refused to drive to DFW ever again, if I can help it. Hate the drive, so even when I was going to my sister’s wedding, I was gonna have come up with a hunk of change for the flight, hotel and rental. So I was okay with her deciding to go minimal.

Welp, Southwest announced there 3 day sale on Tues, I think. But I was short on change and wasn’t gonna be able to take advantage of the sale. Well…the Lord musta wanted me to make it to DFW this summer! Thanks to Southwest Airlines having some website glitches. they had to extend their 3 day sale to midnight tonight! And guess who just got a round trip ticket to DFW for the weekend of Aug 21st for $98!!!!! ME!!!!

Look out DFW, I’ma coming!

File under “fools rush in”:

Storm Chaser Verne Carlson was chasing the Tornado near Simla, CO when he followed what he thought was a country Dirt Road to get out of the path of the storm.

The dirt road ended up becoming a dead end road that was basically a several mile long driveway to someones house and it did not continue as the map suggested.

Clip 1 Large Violent tornado over an open field.

Clip 2 Large Violent tornado with huge hail falling and splashing into a pond.

Clip 3 Dash camera footage of the tornado moving towards the pickup truck.

At time code 2:11 the tornado forms right behind the house. The winds are blowing from left to right in the video.

At time code 3:20 the tornado hits Verne’s truck and spins 90 degrees to the left.

At this point the winds shift from Left to Right and become more head on with large debris flying towards the camera.

At time code 3:30 the winds and debris are now flying and blowing from Right to Left. A 180 degree shift in the winds as the tornado hits the vehicle.

The truck sustained serious damage. The topper on the truck bed was ripped off and the frame appears slightly twisted now.

Dash Camera footage ends at Time Code 3:41

Clip 4 Hand held camera of the same content form when the tornado hit the truck but is extended footage that shows a lot of debris hitting the truck and then the tornado moving off after it hit the farm and the chasers. This clip ends at 9:58

Clip 5 Aftermath walk around of the Ford Ranger of what was left of the truck. The topper was ripped from the truck bed, the contents in the truck bed that were not bolted down were sucked out of the truck bed.

“And not babysitting the girls,” Seewald said.

Kelly asked them about what safeguards were put in place for nighttime.

“Locks on the doors,” Dillard said. “Everybody’s in bed. Girls in the girls’ room, boys in the boys’ room.”

An example of a person calling themselves anti-racist and anti-sexist being a racist and sexist shithead: meet Bahar Mustafa of the #killallwhitemen infamy.

standard.co.uk

“I, an ethnic minority woman, cannot be racist or sexist towards white men, because racism and sexism describe structures of privilege based on race and gender.

“Therefore, women of colour and minority genders cannot be racist or sexist, since we do not stand to benefit from such a system.”

Except, of course, racism and sexism in general describe the corresponding prejudices. One can have no power at all and be an individual racist or sexist. Whereas structural racism and sexism apply to systems/groups/societies, not individuals (so in this sense it makes no sense to say “you’re a [structural] racist”; it’s the whole system that is racist).

By now this meme has become an excuse to say with impunity the stuff David Duke would be proud of.

Wonkette has a nice takedown of Joseph Farah and his call for wingnuts to migrate to one state and secede:

The Supreme Court is just about ready, any day now, to throatcram America TO DEATH, with gay marriage, and very serious newsman Joseph Farah, of the pre-condom gay porn-era Farahs, has taken to the august pixels of his very serious online newspaper WorldNetDaily, to propose a solution: If America simply must have gay marriage, we should pick a state, for all the sad people who hate gays more than they love life to move to, and then get that state to secede from the US and A….

If no state will step up, Farah has ANOTHER idea: “If not a state, are there any nations in the world interested in a pilgrimage by millions of Americans?” Hmmm. Well, we hear sections of Iraq and Syria are a bit “contested” these days, they could always go try to stick a flag over there for themselves. All “millions” of them.

wonkette.com

The Wonkette article duly notes that many of the red states are quite dependent on the federal government.

I wouldn’t be all that terribly surprised to see some of the more hardcore wingnuts actually begin seriously discussing moving to Russia should the SCOTUS rule in favor of nationwide SSM.

WorldNetDaily Pundit Thinks People Are ‘Fleeing’ To Russia To Escape Scourge Of Homosexuality

William Murray, the Religious Right activist and son of American Atheists founder Madalyn Murray O’Hair, is joining in the chorus of sympathy for Vladimir Putin, hailing the Russian leader in a WorldNetDaily column today as a bulwark against the increasingly Marxist and secular West.

Murray praises Russia for its “flat tax that encourages growth” — which he contrasts with “our president’s Soviet-style” economics — and policies to ensure that “individual achievement is honored and prayer and Bible instruction are welcomed in the classrooms.”

Yeah, they’re a lot of talk, that’s for sure, but I doubt many of them would actually have the cojones to pick up and move, and leave everything they’ve ever known behind. That takes actual courage - something those pundits and keyboard warriors are rather lacking in. They’ll just shoot off their mouths, and cry and whine and in the end, they will be little more than a curious footnote in the history books.

Who knows, though? Maybe they’ll depart the shores of the USA for their new “promised land” of freedom and liberty!!

If so, well………bye.

I wonder, as a hypothetical, if they would gravitate towards the big cities - I’d think they’d be more inclined towards the smaller or medium-sized towns, maybe a few would be inclined toward villages or rural/semi-rural areas.

In any event, I think they’d be less than thrilled and they’d end up disillusioned in fairly short order if they actually tried it.

Another great one - Keeping Up Appearances and Are You Being Served? are both on YouTube, the entire series in both cases, if I’m not mistaken.

I liked Keeping Up Appearances because, on reflection, my ex-wife was a younger, Czech version of Hyacinth Bucket. She’s a big-time social climber, snobbish (despite her protestations to the contrary) and pretentious beyond belief.

When I watch it, it’s like having a good laugh at her expense because I have little doubt she’ll morph into full-on Hyancith Bucket as she gets older.

To be fair, it’s mainly the diphthongs (and triphthongs) in Irish that are so mind-boggling. Here are the rules for just one:

Chinese is like “What is it I don’t even”.

No conjugations. No singular/plural forms of verbs. No declension or cases. The grammar is fairly simple (SVO) but learning the ways to distinguish past-present-future with “helper” words is challenging. For me, the toughest part is learning the four tones and reproducing them accurately. Changing the tone changes the meaning of the word.

The written language is tough, too, because you need to memorize about 3,000 to read a newspaper. I’m still in the low hundreds, so maybe I can read primary school primers.

Japanese, now, is a different issue. The verb is usually at the end (SOV or OSV) and there are many forms of address and verbs depending on the relative status of the people involved.

Raymond: That’s not my name.

Interviewer: I’m sorry - Raymond Luxury Yach-t.

Raymond: No, no, no - it’s spelt Raymond Luxury Yach-t, but it’s pronounced ‘Throatwobbler Mangrove’.

Interviewer: You’re a very silly man and I’m not going to interview you.

Raymond: Ah, anti-semitism!

Interviewer: Not at all. It’s not even a proper nose. (takes it off) It’s polystyrene.

Raymond: Give me my nose back.

Interviewer: You can collect it at reception. Now go away.

Raymond: I want to be on the television.

Interviewer: Well you can’t.

Mr Luxury-Yacht also appears in this sketch — How to Recognize Different Parts of the Body

Cut to profile of Raymond Luxury Yacht from next sketch who has an enormous false polystyrene nose. Superimposed arrow pointing at nose.

Voice Over Number nineteen. The nose.

A man sitting behind a desk in a Harley Street consulting room. Close-up of the name plate on desk in front of him. Although the camera does not reveal this for a moment, this name plate, about two inches high, continues all along the desk, off the side of it at the same height and halfway round the room. We start to track along this name plate on which is written: ‘Professor Sir Adrian Furrows F.R.S. F.R.C.S. F.R.C.P. M.D.M.S. (Oxon), Mall Ph.D., M. Se. (Cantab), Ph.D. (Syd), ER.G.S., F.R.C.O.G., F. Litt (All other places in Canada except Medicine Hat, B. Sc. 9 Brussels, Liege, Antwerp, Asse, (and Grower) ‘. There is a knock on the door.)

Specialist Come in.

The door opens and Raymond Luxury Yacht enters. He cannot walk straight to the desk as his passage is barred by the strip of wood carrying the degrees, but he discovers the special hinged part of it that opens like a door. Mr Luxury Yacht has his enormous polystyrene nose. It is a foot long.

Specialist Ah! Mr Luxury Yacht. Do sit down, please.

Mr Luxury Yacht Ah, no, no. My name is spelt ‘Luxury Yacht’ but it’s pronounced ‘Throatwobbler Mangrove’.

Specialist Well, do sit down then Mr Throatwobbler Mangrove.

Mr Luxury Yacht Thank you.

Specialist Now, what seems to be the trouble?

Mr Luxury Yacht Um, I’d like you to perform some plastic surgery on me.

Specialist I see. And which particular feature of your anatomy is causing you distress?

Mr Luxury Yacht Well, well for a long time now, in fact, even when I was a child … I … you know, whenever I left home to … catch a bus, or… to catch a train… and even my tennis has suffered actually…

Specialist Yes. To be absolutely blunt you’re worried about your enormous hooter.

Mr Luxury Yacht No!

Specialist No?

Mr Luxury Yacht Yes.

Specialist Yes, and you want me to hack a bit off.

Mr Luxury Yacht Please.

Specialist Fine. It is a startler, isn’t it? Er, do you mind if I… er.

Mr Luxury Yacht What?

Specialist Oh, no nothing, then, well, I’ll just examine your nose. (he does so; as he examines it the nose comes off in his hand) Mr Luxury Yacht, this nose of yours is false. It’s made of polystyrene and your own hooter’s a beaut. No pruning necessary.

Mr Luxury Yacht I’d still like the operation.

Specialist Well, you’ve had the operation, you strange person.

Mr Luxury Yacht Please do an operation.

Specialist Well, all right, all right, but only … if you come on a camping holiday with me.

Mr Luxury Yacht He asked me! He asked me!

My Ukrainian friends from Luhansk are anti-Russian and anti-neo-Nazi. They’re alarmed by the popularity of neo-Nazi and ultra-nationalist groups. Mostly, they want a democratic Ukraine. It’s hard to say how that’s going to happen with insurgents still occupying most of Donetsk oblast and trying to enter Luhansk oblast again.

Thankfully they haven’t been getting a lot of votes, but their leaders, open fascists and/or neo-Nazis, like Yarosh and Biletsky, have been either individually elected or given govt posts, and they took a very active part in the battles in the East.

This looks promising in this year of film sequels and reboots.

The titular “Bridge of Spies” is the Glienicke Bridge connecting Berlin and Potsdam; during the Cold War, exchanges of captured US or Soviet agents used to take place there.

In the case of this film, it’s about the efforts of American lawyer James B. Donovan to negotiate the exchange between U2 pilot Francis Gary Powers and Soviet KGB Colonel Vilyam Genrikovich Fisher - aka Rudolf Abel.

Directed by Steven Spielberg and written by Matt Charman and Joel and Ethan Coen.

Sounds like Oscar gold, if you ask me. The Coen brothers writing a script directed by Steven Spielberg? Might as well get the statuette engraved right now.

Purely theoretically, maybe. I don’t see it happening just yet, despite certain mixed signals.

E.g. the anti-commie law is seen by some as a “fascist” measure, but I see it as an anti-Soviet/Russian/Putin measure. Maybe a justified one in these particular conditions, esp. considering what the ex-Soviet commies have degenerated into (Stalinism, nationalism, obscurantism, antisemitism, you name it).

It all depends on what vector the Ukrainian middle class and intelligentsia choose - Europe or nationalist isolationism?

Here’s my translation of the first part of their blurb from their website.

Formed in Sao Paulo in October 2012, it could be said that Nomad Orchestra is a meeting place where different musical styles and expressions integrate into a unique form. The group creates lively instrumental works that cross effortlessly between the universes of funk, jazz, dub, rock, afro beat, hip-hop, and ethnogrooves, among others. Besides all that, the group incorporates elements of electronic music, breaking down the barriers between traditional and contemporary music.

There are 10 members. They look like they’re in their 20s.

Hmmm. Let me see. Oh yeah, the always quick and easy answer as given by RWNJ and even some GOP politicians.

That would be from your local charities and churches.

Surely not from the Government.

And along that line. If they are worried about having enough money to support that huge family, then why have 19 children?

Or, was this whole huge family planned as a TV show from the very start and the bet was it would be hugely successful because they were all these God-loving, perfect American family types…what could go wrong?

I really do not know the background on the show and how it came about. I sure hope they weren’t having kids to be cast members and to keep a theme going. If so, that is really creepy.

I was curious myself. It seems this TV production team advancedmedical.tv got wind of this couple with 14 kids in Arkansas and did a couple of features on them, which attracted the interest of TLC in a regular series.
advancedmedical.tv

The original focus, I gather, was on the medical aspects of one woman birthing so many kids. It just mushroomed from there into 17 (18) (19) Kids and Counting.

In other words, it became less a documentary and more a well funded and managed TV property. It’s worth considering whether the financial support from the TLC program aided and abetted the Duggars’ choices to produce more kids.

Ohio has a few cities that cross people up with the pronunciations. I know you said you lived in Columbus so you probably know this one: Pataskala.
I’ve heard Pat-ah-skall-uh…and the locals say Pa-task-a-la

And then there are always issues with a very simple Lima. Most Ohioans pronounce it Lie-Ma. National media (when talking about the big military tank plant) call it Lee-Ma.

One big issue for Ohio is all the Native American influenced names, Pataskala being just one.

Most war movies are so sanitized. SPR actually showed the chaos, the screams of agony from the wounded, the sudden and horrible deaths on all sides and the true horror of battle.

After watching SPR, PTSD is much easier to understand. Some things just can’t be unseen or forgotten and will haunt forever.

I was mentally prepared for the opening scene and was simply fascinated at how they made it all look so realistic.

It was the ending that turned me into a blubbering wreck, and probably because my dad, who was 4F but born in 1914, looked a lot like the Tom SIzemore character (even had the same name, Mike) and was older and a father figure to the young fellows he was leading.

If my dad hat not been involved in a train wreck before the war that damaged his legs, I could well have imagined him in that role in 1944.

His death left me shattered.

I’ve lived in Waukesha County,

When voting took place to decide the county seat, Waukesha beat out Pewaukee by two votes.[4] The name is derived from the Potawatomi word for ‘fox’ because the streams in the lower part of the county drain into the Fox River.

Multnomah County,

The county is named after the Chinook word for the “lower river”, Multnomah and Matlnomaq being alternative, interpretive English spellings of the same word. In Chinook Jargon, Ne-matlnomaq, means the “place of matlnomaq” or the (singular)Ne-matlnomag, “the lower river”, from the Oregon City Falls to the Columbia river. The explorer William Clark wrote in his Journal: “I entered this river…called Multnomah…from a nation who reside on Wappato Island, a little below the enterence” (quoted from Willamette Landings by H.M. Corning). Note that Clark refers to Sauvies Island as Wappato Island and the lower Willamette River as Multnomah. Simply put, Multnomah or “down river” is the shortened form of nematlnomaq,[citation needed] meaning “the down river”.

Snohomish is the name of a Native American tribe in the area. Some associate the word as meaning “land of the low people”.

The Allies landed more than 150,000 troops in Normandy, involving 11,590 aircraft and 6,939 naval vessels. There were over 9,000 casualties.

The staggering size of these numbers can actually make it difficult for our brains to truly comprehend the devastation. It’s fun down here in the South because lots of places were settled by the French and thus given French names, but the vast majority of those names now have anglicized pronunciations.

D’iberville = D-Eye-Burr-Vill
Saucier = Sew-sure
Delacroix = Day-La-Croy (instead of Dee-la-craw)

But at the same time, others have retained more of the French.

The residential schools had a profound impact on First Nations people (at the time called Indians) in forming their self image of hopelessness and inferiority.

it wasn’t only Canada, either. The US had residential schools for Native North Americans as well. I do not know a source providing a good investigation of them, but I can say the Department of the Interior did encourage the graduates of said schools to leave reservations in exchange for a train ticket to a larger city and some aid in getting set up once there. Much of Chicago’s Native population has roots in that program.

Though natives did somewhat better in Chicago than in other places, in part because of Chicago has been (remains) relatively hospitable to ethnic neighborhoods.

The residential schools were limited to teaching up to grade 7 and any FN person wanting more education had to renounce the Treaty (#4 here) giving up all health benefits and move to the city.

That’s now changed.

One I will never forget. Back in the late 70s and early 80s there was a French Grand Prix driver Rene Arnoux (Ra-nay Are-new). Just don’t knock the Crusader impulse too hard. It was born of a genuine threat, that being the Saljuk Turks’ attacks on the Byzantine Empire, and it proves unifying for Western Europe in important ways. Exposure to other places also proved crucial in Europe’s development.

That’s not to defend all or even most aspects of the Crusader Era, but the Crusades should not be seen simply as “European Aggression” or as a wholly negative series of events.

As seen from the western eye, yes. How is all that seen from the Mid East eye?

And how does it all still relate to today?

I know we are dealing with humans and their religions. That is my point. And I know none of it is all clean and easy.

The big problem is today maybe we need to factor some of that knowledge of the history into our foreign policy instead of the bubba-thinking (and to a degree Lindsey Graham thinking) of let’s turn the whole area into a sea of glass. To me that still comes from a righteous “we are better than the savages” thinking too many can’t get past.

It’s fun down here in the South because lots of places were settled by the French and thus given French names, but the vast majority of those names now have anglicized pronunciations.

D’iberville = D-Eye-Burr-Vill
Saucier = Sew-sure
Delacroix = Day-La-Croy (instead of Dee-la-craw)

But at the same time, others have retained more of the French.

Gautier (Go-Shay), though the more traditional French pronunciation is Goatee-A
Baton Rouge

As someone who deals with customers, police and fire departments all over the South daily, you have to keep a mental tally on pronunciations on places that deviate from the “normal” pronunciations:

Arab, AL (A-rab)
Lafayette, TN and Lafayette Street here in Nashville (la-FAY-et)
Houston County, GA (HOW-stun)
Lebanon, TN (leb-a-nun)

Actually, that’s pretty close to true. The problem in their eyes is, if a gay person confessed and promised to sin no more (not be gay) then all would be well. But they can’t accept gay marriage because that “sin” will continue.

But this logic fails when it comes to divorced people, like myself. Divorce is also a sin in the Bible. I’ve been happily married to my second wife for 15 years now. My first wife re-married to someone who is much nicer to her than I was and had a child and has been happily married for 25 years. So how can I possibly stop sinning? Leave my current wife, convince my ex-wife to leave her current family, and restart where we left off in 1985?

No, because the marriage was legal and thus the benefits clearly belong to the widow. Moreover, unlike with birth control coverage, the business would be trying to avoid paying what it already owes, rather than covering a optional purchase.

Speaking of Kyiv. I have a question for Sergei if he’s here or anyone else who understands Slavic languages. Why is it Kyiv in some spellings and Kiev in others? I assume it’s like how Gdansk is Gdansk to Poles and it’s Danzig to GErmans.

This must be a “bring your own chair” event.

Over the years, Manitoba’s first aboriginal judge has been involved in proceedings that would test anyone’s spiritual strength: a commission on aboriginal justice in Manitoba; an inquest into the death of 12 infants at a Winnipeg hospital; and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, which over six years heard from more than 7,000 survivors of mental, physical and sexual abuse at residential schools.

Perhaps the most wrenching moment came when the TRC, as it’s called, was well under way. Mr. Sinclair’s elderly uncle asked to see him. The uncle had been to a residential school with Mr. Sinclair’s father, who had abandoned Mr. Sinclair when his mother died - he was only one year old - descending into a life plagued by alcohol, mental illness and homelessness.

The uncle, who had been sexually abused at the school, “made a passing remark that my father had experienced the same kind of abuse he had experienced. I was caught a little off-guard by that,” said Mr. Sinclair, in the calm, measured tone with which he describes any situation. He now believes that this father’s demons arose from that abuse.

Mr. Sinclair’s grandmother, who knew something of what had happened, pulled her children out of the school and left the reserve. Later, she took over the raising of her grandchildren, and she raised them well. Mr. Sinclair was class valedictorian at his high school (and athlete of the year), went to university and law school, specialized in aboriginal issues as a lawyer and was appointed in 1988 to the bench.

Definitely, WRT the Omaha beach scene. Technically one of the most incredible scenes in movie history. My Grandpa, tank gunner late in the war, said it was spot on, except “we just didn’t cuss so darn much!”

World news—-A SCUD missile got launched by Houthi rebels in Yemen. Where do they get the crew to run a weapon like that? One can assume Iran but gotta wonder how many of those missiles are in Yemen

They have been used in Yemen before. Probably some of the same people today.

1994 civil war in Yemen and 2015 Yemen War[edit]
During the 1994 civil war in Yemen, both South Yemen separatists and government forces fired Scud missiles.[33].
On 6th June 2015 Yemen Rebels fired a scud missile on Saudi Arabia which was reportedly shot down by Patriot Missile [34].

If hormone treatments that would otherwise be birth control are medically necessary, then the employer must cover them. The Supreme Court didn’t give Hobby Lobby a way out on that point, but to be fair I’m pretty sure HB did not contest it either.

I love filling out extra paperwork to prove that a routine decision between me and my doctor is medically necessary.

By this logic, I have to carry that justification with me everywhere too, so that if a pharmacist balks at giving me the drugs prescribed by my doctor, I can present them with the medically necessary seal of approval.

It is still medically necessary if I use it for birth control as well, right? Just curious.

I look forward to the “medically necessary” requirement for Viagra too. For actual medical conditions and not just “I want to have sexytimes but I can’t get it up anymore.”

Well I was talking about Eastern Orthodox Christians and Kviv is a very important city in Orthodoxy. Those Kyiv protesters got a lot of courage for sure.

You got that right.

re: #493 klys (maker of Silmarils)

Oh, and I look forward to women receiving discounts on our insurance, since some of our typical medications are no longer covered.

The employer can pass that money along directly to the employee so they can purchase their prescriptions themselves.

I’m not sure why it is magically okay for women to take birth control if they pay for it using money provided by their employer but not insurance provided by their employer, but apparently it is, so.

SCUD B’s are owned by the Yemeni military. Compared to some, they’re not that difficult to erect and launch - the fuming nitric acid has it’s problems but it’s not cryogenic either and kerosene & udmh are simple enough too.

Kyiv is Ukranian and Kiev is Russian. (And I’m still on vacation so must post and run.)

Yeah, you can ask Marshall Nedelin about that.

re: #495 klys (maker of Silmarils)

I could keep going about how this is a deliberate choice to make women pay for the concept of wanting to have sex without having children as a result, in this case quite literally. Particularly for poorer women for whom picking up the cost of birth control every month is non-trivial and has to be weighed against the necessities like food, shelter, etc.

Never mind that child is more expensive. Never mind that pregnancy is more expensive. Never mind that abstinence within a marriage or relationship can have serious costs to the health of that relationship. At least the employers don’t have to worry that they are providing birth control contrary to their teachings! Because as boss, their religious beliefs take complete and utter precedence.

But I’ll stop now. Really.

Woman to sue eBay for denying her right to sell plots of land on the sun.

IIRC, one of the prerequisites is a proper legal on-site survey, with markers and such.
