Here’s an OG version of a song, a live acoustic rendition of Umphrey’s McGee’s “No Diablo.”

Don’t know how many people here have seen Netflix’s Sense8, but I just got around to watching the first episode tonight.

It gets high ratings on IMDB but so do all TV shows which aren’t totally bad.

It caught my eye because of Straczynski’s name.

Anyway, what strikes me is that like so much of contemporary TV which are not comedies there is the central theme of self-destruction (addicts, nihilism, etc.) Maybe it’s just me, but dystopic elements for several years now are integral to entertainment (TV and motion theatre).

This brings me the long way around to the very reactionary nature of our contemporary politics.

My feeling is that modernity with all it’s demands and distractions is just too much for us emotionally. We can’t take any more. We can’t learn faster, we can’t change faster, we can’t adapt faster. Collectively we are highly over-stimulated to the point of not being able to turn off the need for adrenaline rushes.

If I were to write an ℞ for our society I’d send the whole society to Zen retreats to stare at some rocks for a couple of years.

Lost in all the reporting a’bout the McKinney outrage is the question: Why isn’t this cop being arrested and investigated for child abuse?

If it were the kids’ parents, esp that 14 yr old girl, child welfare would be all over them. Not to mention pulling a gun on them, verbally abusing them, and whatever other outrageous conduct anyone missed.

I hope the kids’ parents retain a damn good attorney.

In addition to the Boswell Sisters’ #1 hit, “The Object of My Affection” in 1935, there’s this one from the 1934 film, Transatlantic Merry-Go-Round, using a term not widely used until the 50s. It’s said that the Andrew Sisters imitated their style, as well.

I have been humbled. I thought I had a pretty good knowledge of early jazz, but I had never heard of the Boswells till now. They’re great! I read the WIkipedia entry about them, and Connee was one of Ella Fitzgerald’s influences. I bet my parents heard their music on the radio box.

Ethno-nationalism can pop up anywhere:

Armenians have preserved their anthropological type over the past 3,000 years

Armenians have not undergone serious genetic changes and have preserved their anthropological type at least in the course of the past three thousand years, the research by the Copenhagen University has revealed, said Professor Levon Yepiskoposyan, Head of the Ethnogenetics Laboratory at the Institute of Molecular Biology at the Armenian National Academy of Sciences.

The Copenhagen University has studied 101 ancient genetic samples from different Eurasian regions. The genetic data from different ancient sites of the bronze and iron ages of Armenia have been included in the research for the first time. The study was aimed at revealing the genetic characteristics of the European population.

Armenia was the only country in the region included in the study. “Why? Because we have no problems and no complexes,” Prof. Yepiskoposyan said. According to him, Azerbaijan turned down the proposal.

Hmmm…. maybe it’s a translation thing.

Same guy in a different report:

The Presidency of the Armenian National Academy of Sciences (ANAS) has held a presentation of the “Genetic mapping of historical Armenia” project.

[…]

The map represents a rich Armenian genofond (gene pool) in terms of geography, which has for centuries formed and prospered in the Armenian highlands.

Levon Yepiskoposyan, […]

“We hope that this project will prove to be a genetic record,” he said.

Speaking of other peoples’ influence on the Armenian genofond, Mr Yepiskoposyan said:

“Our language, our statehood, our identity, which has deep roots, enabled us to remain intact, when they tried to damage our genofond by force.

This project is a tribute to the memory of Armenian Genocide victims, he added.

Well, if he insists. I doubt the Armenian gene-pool has remained as pure as he insists.

There is a cultural divide between my contemporary American worldview and Dr. Yepiskoposyan’s. I see ethno-nationalism as something not so good, all too often a source of badness. For him it is national pride.

29 Justanotherhuman  Jun 8, 2015 4:13:32am

re: #17 freetoken

I think many modern people are what I describe myself as: a mutt, which is why I don’t really claim any particular ethnicity, although my ancestors probably came from that mix in England and a couple may have had Native American wives (according to my grandmother). I am a blue-eyed blonde, with very fair skin, freckles where I should tan, although a couple of aunts and uncles are dark haired and more tawny-skinned on my mom’s side. Father’s side is strictly very fair, red- or blonde-haired.

You can call yourself any nationalistic name you prefer, but ethnicity is an entirely different matter as people have migrated over many centuries. With all due respect to Professor Levon Yepiskoposyan, I think there is something else operating other than ‘proof’ of the genetic mapping of Armenians.

Aural Sea --is in Mongolia.

It has a crisis named after it.

44 FemNaziBitch  Jun 8, 2015 4:45:08am
Formerly one of the four largest lakes in the world with an area of 68,000 km2 (26,300 sq mi), the Aral Sea has been steadily shrinking since the 1960s after the rivers that fed it were diverted by Soviet irrigation projects. By 2007, it had declined to 10% of its original size, splitting into four lakes - the North Aral Sea, the eastern and western basins of the once far larger South Aral Sea, and one smaller lake between the North and South Aral Seas.[5] By 2009, the southeastern lake had disappeared and the southwestern lake had retreated to a thin strip at the extreme west of the former southern sea; in subsequent years, occasional water flows have led to the southeastern lake sometimes being replenished to a small degree.[6] Satellite images taken by NASA in August 2014 revealed that for the first time in modern history the eastern basin of the Aral Sea had completely dried up.[7] The eastern basin is now called the Aralkum desert.

46 FemNaziBitch  Jun 8, 2015 4:47:12am
The disappearance of the lake was no surprise to the Soviets; they expected it to happen long before. As early as 1964, Aleksandr Asarin at the Hydroproject Institute pointed out that the lake was doomed, explaining, “It was part of the five-year plans, approved by the council of ministers and the Politburo. Nobody on a lower level would dare to say a word contradicting those plans, even if it was the fate of the Aral Sea.[18]

I never got how Southern California expected to survive.

Since we had some “aviation pr0n” in the previous thread, here’s a bit of aviation history from VOA Learning English today.

Woman World War II Pilot Honored learningenglish.voanews.com

During World War II, American women pilots were trained to fly non-combat missions so that men could fly fighter planes. U.S. officials gave the women permission to fly military aircraft as civilian pilots, but not in battle or over enemy lines.

Bernice Falk Haydu was one of those pilots. She is now 94 years old. She was recently recognized for her service. She received an honorary doctorate from the Vaughn College of Aeronautics and Technology in New York City.

She and the other women pilots volunteered to fly in what was a time of great crisis in the United States and around the world. Women who knew how to fly airplanes wanted to become active in the war effort.

Ms Haydu is 94 and walks and talks like someone 30 years younger. Let’s see if this video will embed properly.

*sigh*

The setting is Kaufman, Texas, and what happened is that a couple of Sunday nights ago, on May 31, someone decided they would leave a message on a van belonging to a church with a black pastor, John Weaver. The message of pure hate and ignorance they spray painted on the van was:

“No N*iggers”

It should be noted that the Weaver family is the only African-American family living in their neighborhood, so it quickly becomes painfully obvious that the message on the van was meant for them. Pastor Weaver says:

“What really got me is, they put it on the church bus. Golly, we are Christians. We ain’t got no hate.”

But these racist vermin were not quite finished terrorizing the Weaver family. They also took the time to poison their puppy, Ka-lo.

So I’m thinking of places to move when retire and came up with these options:

1. Israel (but, WAR)
2. Brooklyn (srsly WTF)
3. Florida (rising sea levels)
4. Canada (winter is coming)
5. Alabama (too many wingnuts)

I’d love to retire to Bisbee Az but:
1) Not enough water down there
2) Too many other old white farts moving there making #1 worse…

So I’ll just stay in Northern Wisconsin. Winter may suck but I’ll always have enough water to drink and raise crops with here in the Lake Superior basin…

Depends on how far north, and where you are in relation to Lake Ontario and/or Lake Erie. Jet Stream runs through there and its shifts north and south during the winter get you rain/snow, or a spell of clear, but cold weather. Probably similar to Michigan in that regard.

And if you’re east of the larger lakes you get more snow. The Finger Lakes probably generate some interesting micro-climate effects, so there are spots here and there that probably are nicer than others.

If you like Korean or Chinese food, head to Flushing. It’s become the go-to place for newly arrived Asian immigrants.

The trouble with NYC (and Long Island) in general is the high cost of living. I’d probably move back to Long Island if I had millions socked away, but as it is, I can only be wistful about growing up there.

83 Justanotherhuman  Jun 8, 2015 5:54:15am

The people next door are moving out. For the last couple of months, they’ve kept a cat (gotten from who knows where). Another cat looking like the kitten has been hanging around, so she could be the mother? Anyway, when they moved more stuff yesterday, one of the cats got trapped in the apt and was wanting out this morning. Nothing I could do. I just saw a couple of the teens who lived there taking boxes out and they still have more “stuff” to move, including furniture. Plus, the agent from the Klown Kar Realty Co is coming by to “inspect” my apt and I imagine he’s going to have a stroke if he goes in next door and the cat has done its business in there.

We’re not allowed to have cats, so if they don’t take the kitten with them, it’s going to become feral. And I’m allergic to cat dander, not to mention hating litter boxes because in another instance, I was the one who had to always clean it up before it became a total health hazard (and the cat wasn’t mine).

Barack Obama poised to hike wages for millions

The Labor Department could propose a rule that would raise the current overtime threshold — $23,660 - to as much as $52,000.

The Obama administration is on the verge of possibly doubling the salary levels that would require employers to pay overtime in the most ambitious government intervention on wages in a decade. And it doesn’t need Congress’s permission.

As early as this week, the Labor Department could propose a rule that would raise the current overtime threshold — $23,660 - to as much as $52,000, extending time and a half overtime pay to millions of American workers. The rule has already come under fire from business and Republican opponents who say it will kill jobs and force employers to cut hours for salaried employees.

“The minimum wage they can’t do,” said Bill Samuel, director of legislative affairs for the AFL-CIO. “This is probably the most significant step they can take to raise wages for millions of workers.”

Short-sighted leaders and citizens will probably prevent anything effective from being done.

Some societies collapsing might have more effect - but generally due to bad reasons such as war, large refugee influxes, and industries shutting down due to this or that reason. An outbreak of Lord Humungus wannabes is not a desirable outcome in my opinion.

And just 2 deg Celsius is predicted to bring, according to this analysis from Berrens in The Netherlands:

In the two-degree world, nobody will think of taking Mediterranean holidays. The movement of people from northern Europe to the Mediterranean is likely to reverse, switching eventually into a mass scramble as Saharan heatwaves sweep across the Med. People everywhere will think twice about moving to the coast. When temperatures were last between 1 and 2C higher than they are now, 125,000 years ago, sea levels were five or six metres higher too. All this “lost” water is in the polar ice that is now melting. Forecasters predict that the “tipping point” for Greenland won’t arrive until average temperatures have risen by 2.7C. The snag is that Greenland is warming much faster than the rest of the world - 2.2 times the global average. “Divide one figure by the other,” says Lynas, “and the result should ring alarm bells across the world. Greenland will tip into irreversible melt once global temperatures rise past a mere 1.2C. The ensuing sea-level ?rise will be far more than the half-metre that ?the IPCC has predicted for the end of the century. Scientists point out that sea levels at the end of the last ice age shot up by a metre every 20 years for four centuries, and that Greenland’s ice, in the words of one glaciologist, is now thinning like mad and flowing much faster than it ought to. Its biggest outflow glacier, Jakobshavn Isbrae, has thinned by 15 metres every year since 1997, and its speed of flow has doubled. At this rate the whole Greenland ice sheet would vanish within 140 years. Miami would disappear, as would most of Manhattan. Central London would be flooded. Bangkok, Bombay and Shanghai would lose most of their area. In all, half of humanity would have to move to higher ground.

re: #102 Justanotherhuman

That’s simply from the water levels. On top of that you get rain patterns shifting, species migrating (and bringing diseases with them), and lots or areas now flood-prone that were previously safe.

And, of course, you’ll see a lot of resources thrown into a losing battle to save coastal cities via levees and such rather than a rational decision to start a long-term plan to shift to higher ground now.

Because if we successfully planned long-term as a planet-covering society we would have nipped this issue in the bud.

Seems like so much of the crazy is coming out of that state anymore. I don’t get it. Sure, Texas was always the Lone Start state filled with people that saw themselves as the true independents and there was always a little feel for them thinking there was Texas and then the other 49 states.

I’m thinking the politics and politicians of the state have really been a large part of allowing the crazy to get crazier. Did it somehow change it’s focus when “W” became president? Did the election of Obama really set them off and the politicians in the State used that opportunity to drive the divide so that they could see their jobs solidified election after election?

Sure seems Texas is presenting some real bad issues that may be all over this country but Texas is letting it rip.

Not books that are already overdue.

I don’t know why I forgot to renew online, they always send a reminder.
(checks email)

I know why, because they sent another reminder to pick-up a book I put on hold & the renew reminder got bundled into the same group of emails so I didn’t realize it was recent.

Okay…I watched a few scenes from this. The 14 year old girl getting yanked off the ground and thrown back to the ground and having her face pushed into the ground twice before the cop goes full weight with one knee in her spine is beyond over the top. She was already on the ground.

[Embedded content]

A few seconds before that, about the 3:00 mark, was more horrifying, imo.

If you can download the 720p file, and view it slo-mo or frame-by-frame, you can see where RageCop grabs her right hand with both of his, swings her about, forcing her to lose her balance. Look for the frame where her left knee and foot have just made contact with the ground. At that moment, her right foot was higher than RageCop’s shoulders because her right leg was blocked by his left leg being intentionally extended at an angle toward the grass. Also, at that moment, he is still using his right hand to prevent her use of her own right hand to break her fall, AND he uses his left hand to push DOWN on her horizontal backside, intentionally accellerating her fall when her head was a mere foot from the sidewalk. She had only her left arm free to prevent her face from smashing hard into the sidewalk.

Political Correctness is a catch all phrase. What some may construe as PC others may construe as basic politeness. I don’t know. I think Seinfeld comes off and granted I have not heard the interview with him and Colin Cowherd but I think he comes off a little bitter here. Older people are always going to find something to complain about the younger generation. Jerry’s parents generation found fault with the Boomers for sure but there are always going to be generational gaps. I am sorry if I come across a little defensive of my generation but I get tired of Boomers and Gen Xers mostly whining about Millenials. We are what we are. I’d say most of them are. The most famous complaint which has sparked the stupid War on Christmas bullshit is “Happy Holidays.” Now with family and friends whose holiday I know of choice is Christmas I’ll probably say “Merry Christmas” but I may slip in Happy Holidays too and there’s a very practical reason for that. IT’s because New Years falls a week after Christmas Day. It’s just like me saying “you guys” instead of all of your names. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year works too of course but it’s lame to get offended over it.

Freaking idiot. Wars can’t be won from the air, unless you use atomic weapons. But reducing your opponent to radioactive glass isn’t victory.

The point of war is to get your opponent to do what you want, and ‘Die!’ is a poor thing to want.

And seriously, as I’ve pointed out before, why are we freaking out over a larger than average street gang? They have no industry. They have no power projection. They have no armour, aircraft nor artillery. They can’t even reach us for crying’ out lout.

So why are they a danger to us at the Warsaw Pact level?

Never has a fantasy book been so popular with conservatives.

made me think of this quotation.

There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old’s life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs.

Weren’t wingnuts just complaining the other day about how liberals don’t live in the real world with Facts and all like that but Here is are awesome and all inspiring Who Is John Galt panel?

/

The wingnuts can see the ‘facts’ but they can’t evaluate, analyse and draw accurate conclusions from them.

They choose the ‘facts’ that seemingly agree with their positions eg. race realism, The Bell Curve, but go no further. The left of center, on the other hand has already evaluated, analysed and drawn conclusions from those same ‘facts’ and are preparing to act on it.

There is a reason most scientists are left of center and it isn’t because they’ve been brainwashed by liberal elites.

ISIS has artillery and armor. They may have aircraft. This year old article from Business Insider lists some to ht weapons that ISIS had already captured then. There are rumors to the effect that ISIS pilots are training in captured Syrian MiG fighters. The fighters are older versions.

Arms and ammunition have been pouring into the region for decades. It’s the only place in the world where you could equip an army with stuff you found.

Do they have working armour? Have they the spare parts, the maintenance crews, the ammunition to use them? The same questions apply for artillery.

I’ve no doubt they have mortars for mortars are much simpler weapons than artillery and armour but not much more than that.

If Daesh has aircraft those aren’t yet being used. I’ve not heard a single report about them. Not that they would last long. AWACS would pick them up before they rotated off the runway and there’d be an AMRAAM up their ass within five minutes. If Daesh hasn’t reported bombing people and the Allies haven’t reported any knockdowns after a year I’m inclined not to believe the Business Insider article.

My question stands; Why is Daesh considered an existential threat to The West when it can’t even reach us and it hasn’t the infrastructure to create a military that can do us any real harm?

Goddamn, I love this. Kicking the Republicans when they’re down and don’t want to raise the minimum wage.

Q: Is snopes.com run by “very Democratic” proprietors? Did they lie to discredit a State Farm insurance agent who attacked Obama?

We asked David [Mikkelson]. He told us that Barbara is a Canadian citizen, and as such isn’t allowed to vote here or contribute money to U.S. candidates. As for him, “My sole involvement in politics is on Election Day to go out and vote. I’ve never joined a party, worked for a campaign or donated money to a candidate.”

“You’d be hard-pressed to find two more apolitical people,” David Mikkelson said. We checked online to see if he had given money to any federal candidates, and nothing turned up. Mikkelson even faxed us a copy of his voter registration form. He asked us not to post an image of it here, but we can confirm that it shows he declined to state a party affiliation when he registered last year, and also that when he registered in 2000 he did so as a Republican.

Do the snopes.com articles reveal a political bias? We reviewed a sampling of their political offerings, including some on rumors about George W. Bush, Sarah Palin and Barack Obama, and we found them to be utterly poker-faced. David does say that the site receives more complaints that it is too liberal than that it is too conservative. Nevertheless, he says, “We apply the same debunking standards to both sides.”

When you say it was an attempt to enforce Shariah Law, you lose anyone sane Spencer. So can it with the overly dramatic bullshit. You and Pam get called out because you’re against the first amendment for American Muslims. It’s got shit little to do with Shariah law and more with the fact that you’re authoritarian assholes.

When I heard there was someone going after Pamz (which may or may not be true), I said, ‘Who can blame them?’

There is the US Army Tank Command but they don’t employ as many civilians as the GM Tech Center next door.

If it hadn’t been for Hitler’s declaration of war against us, something even his own advisers thought was absolute lunacy, we probably would have busied ourselves with Japan alone. Certainly the odds are that Germany would have done something that served as casus belli for involvement in the European Theater, but by then there’s no telling where the war would be.

Meanwhile, we as a country, let an admitted child molester to roam free. We let bikers involved in a shooting spree casually sit and check their email on their phones. We give people like that the benefit of doubt. Not people like Kalief or Mike, or Walter, or Darrien, or Tamir, or Eric.

One of the more catastrophic blunders the Austrian corporal made. Perhaps one of the worst was the invasion of Yugoslavia in 1941, which ended up postponing Operation Barbarossa for something like five or six weeks - all so he could vent his spite against a small country that had dared to defy him.

Declaring war on the USA? IIRC, I think Ribbentrop (his dullard, sycophantic Foreign Minister) actually tried to talk him out of it, to no avail. Ironic as hell, because in ‘Mein Kampf’, Hitler pointedly noted that the US intervention in WWI was a decisive factor in Germany’s defeat.

I never thought about that in regards to Yugoslavia. That’s a great point though. It all goes back to the failed Italian invasion of Greece I think. Amazing that even von Ribbentrop tried to talk him out of it since von Ribbentrop is often reported to be one of the dimmer Nazis and a Hitler yes-man.

Now there’s a guy who knows how to play with himself. /*runs away

Wasn’t there a line in the movie Fame where a kid was playing all the instruments on a Moog type synth. He was all happy with himself until the teacher said, “That is not orchestration, that is masturbation.”. Or something like that.

See Reagan being cool with Saddam Hussein during the Iraq-Iran conflict.

Don’t forget Saddam’s gassing of Kurds (using weapons we gave him), which the U.S. intelligence community and State Department blamed on Iran.

As much of a bootlicking imbecile as Ribbentrop was, I think it penetrated even his rather dull mind that declaring war on the USA would most likely produce the same outcome as WWI - ie, defeat.

I was talking about historical figures, and I showed my class a photo of Stalin as a young man - the girls swooned.

Until they found it who it was, LOL.

Is it the cover that Montefore used for that excellent Young Stalin bio? There’s a photo of his oldest son Yakov that I think is a dead ringer for a younger Robert DeNiro. Good point about Ribbentrop. He was a Hitler lackey but he too had witnessed the first world war.

More accurately they won’t be happy until minimum wage is done away with. Refusing to raise is it actually the moderate position within conservativeland. Plenty of conservatives out there who would do away with it all together if they could.
