Prime is great. I’ve even started receiving some packages quicker than 2 days. This past weekend I ordered something on Sunday and it was in my mailbox on Monday - and I don’t live in a same-day zip.

But wait! There’s more! Amazon music app is terrific. I’ve been enjoying the heck out of it. There is an outstanding selection of free (with Prime) albums and you can create your own playlists with those and import your own music from other sources, or enjoy playlists they’ve designed. I just ordered a bluetooth speaker so I can use it outside on my patio with my tablet.

Prime just gets better and better.

I joined last year when they had a bargain price of $60 for a year. Since then, I’ve watched The Sopranos, Downton Abbey, and Orphan Black. I see that they’re now including some more HBO shows like Deadwood and Boardwalk Empire, both of which are amazingly amazing shows. They also have the FX shows Sons of Anarchy and Justified, both of which I’d seen when they were shown but would make excellent binge watching. Movies are pretty much meh AFAIC. Like Netflix, they insist on calling movies that are over a year old new releases.

Then there’s the free two day shipping and even same day in certain areas. Fortunately, the bay area is one of those. That alone is almost worth the fee.

Amazon Prime really is one of the best deals out there. Free streaming music is extremely cool — and they don’t only have old records. I’ve seen brand new releases available for free streaming too, like Sufjan Stevens excellent new album Carrie & Lowell.

Would you say that if you rented a DVD from Blockbuster? I use streaming services as temporary entertainment; I need a show to watch at a random time of a random day, I pay $10/month for the privilege of calling up a library and renting one. I can stop subscription and restart any time I want if I’m not making use of it.

Dee Dee just watched all of Justified (have to keep an eye on that Timothy Olyphant fellow) and she also just finished Transparent. She has me watching Hung with her now. We also finished Mozart in the Jungle which I thought was funny. Also, the streaming music is good. Last week I just received our Amazon Echo (ordered in January) which is a fun piece that hooks up to your Amazon account too.

You might enjoy Leverage, if you haven’t seen it. Based on what you are saying you like and my sister’s taste in TV shows.

I probably make mr. klys sad, because I see maybe 1.5 movies a year and approximately 0 TV shows and he actually likes some things along those lines. Apparently my sister got all the interest in those kinds of moving pictures.

I’m addicted to British TV and movies. Netflix has quite a few but not enough, IMHO—Broadhurst, Hinterland, Luther, which I’ve seen, along with some others. They also have a fair amount of docs and foreign films, although nothing spectacular I’ve seen. Their categories leave a lot to be desired, although you can look up a movie by its title to see if it’s there.

The Netflix interface for the PS3 is horrible. It also becomes a different flavor of horrible with every system update.

I’ve been using my Xbox primarily for Netflix, which might explain why my user experience has been, er, less than optimal. But it’s the easiest and best way for us to access the service without taking up a house computer or screen.

A Federal court on Thursday declined to halt implementation of tough new net neutrality regulations.

A three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit denied petitions for a temporary stay made by AT&T Inc. and other opponents of the online traffic rules.

Sorry if I have be the contrarian voice here, but I have found Amazon Prime to be moderately disappointing for what the C household uses it for. We don’t buy a lot of physical stuff through Amazon, and don’t use the Kindle much, so whatever advantages we get are mainly for streaming videos. Which we have found Amazon Prime covers amazingly few shows that we would like to watch, which means paying per episode/season anyway. OK, it’s only $1.99 per, but that adds up if you watch as much as we do: we won’t cancel it (‘cuz it’s just marginally useful): but not all that fantastic IOHO…

PS: I don’t know if they still do this, but when I first signed up for AP, when the “special offer” ran out, they charged us for the regular annual rate at the end of the “trial” period. Automatically. Caveat....

I’ve had Prime for a few years now and consider it a mixed bag. I definitely purchase enough to save money on shipping so it’s absolutely worth it, but I pretty much exhausted all the free streaming options that appeal to me a long time ago. They don’t rotate offerings very often, which I understand is mostly due to the restrictive windowing contracts the studios demand. I wish something would get done about that.

I got an Amazon Firestick that has worked very well. Cheap too at $39.

I bought the Firestick when it was first on sale for $19.99. Had no idea what it even was, but it seemed like a deal! I have my streaming stuff through my BlueRay, so the Firestick is still in the package it came in.

Yes, I’m an idiot, and a sucker for a bargain. (I also bought the Kindle Fire when it was on sale—still in the box—still using my Nexus 7 tablet.)

I just upgraded TWC to digital and expanded platform and changed over to digital phone (I need a landline for business.) With my internet (upgraded to faster speed), expanded digital cable with HBO, free wifi, and phone, it’s still $35 a month cheaper than I was paying for just internet and phone.

Just when I think I’ve caught up with technology, it gets away from me again. Sigh.

The only thing I miss about cable is the randomness. You turn it on, whatever is on is on. With streaming and whatnot you choose everything all the time so that random factor is gone.

That’s what I depend on cable for. There are a few things I’ll decide I want to see, and enjoy the ability to stream a la carte—On Demand usually takes care of that. Mainly, though, I don’t want to make the effort. I like to look at the schedule and say: “Oh, man—I haven’t thought of that in years!” Or: “I always meant to see that, but never did!”

As for buying downloads, no thanks. If I want to keep music or movies or TV shows, I want CD or Blu-Ray quality—charging money for anything less should be illegal.

I’ve been perusing the local message boards in Lubbock for the reaction to the firing of Frenship teacher Karen Fitzgibbons.
Frenship parents and district residents are generally supportive of the district. The rest is the usual foaming at the mouth from cretins who do not understand what “freedom of speech” means, with more than a few outright racists openly endorsing Fitzgibbons’s views.
The Frenship administration showed some guts in deciding so quickly to can the woman. It was absolutely the right thing, but they must now brace for a shitstorm of Biblical proportions from RWNJ radio quacks and racist politicians all over the country. There may also be some real threats from the usual suspects and I would not be surprised to see the district police quietly requesting help from other agencies. It is a small country district and they are not accustomed to national exposure. I hope they are up to it.

God, I miss the old Sierra games. It makes me thankful companies like GOG that are making all those old games available again. I tried once to get DOSBox to work, spent about an hour fiddling with it, then decided that having my fingernails pulled out one by one would be more pleasant by comparison.

I never had a problem with dosbox (except for android), but I’d rather let GOG take care of it. And I too love Sierra — and a lot of other games of that era..

I found the middle of QFG1 a bit lacking — spent a lot of time picking fights to level up — but I loved 2. I haven’t played the others (yet, I bought them from GOG), and I don’t remember why, except that it was something about my equipment.

I will get graphic, because it is a legit question.

IUD insertion isn’t fun. IUD removal isn’t fun. For some women, and I happen to be one of them, we move out of not fun and into DEAR GOD I AM BEING STABBED IN THE UTERUS which is so not fun it’s not funny. Both insertion and removal are things that have to be done at the doctor’s office.

It tends to be more painful for women who haven’t had children, and there are fewer studies done on how quickly the return to fertility happens, and it’s possible the body can say NOPE and pop it out on its own. The risk of ectopic pregnancy is also higher, and depending on the woman, some types of IUDs are highly not recommended because of undesired side effects. (The copper IUD - one of the older styles - can have the lovely effect of making a period heavier and/or accompanied by even more painful cramps. Highly not recommended for women who already have painful cramps, which is one reason birth control is frequently prescribed.) The hormone based ones like Mirena are fantastic but much more recent and most doctors will hesitate to recommend them to women just trying birth control or who may change their mind in the near-term future. It’s often helpful to have a baseline of how the body responds to the hormones involved before dealing with the hassle of insertion as well. Every woman’s body reacts differently.

In my case, I’d been on BC for 12 years before I got my IUD, and I have no plans to have children so I was less concerned about fertility down the road (although I think it is less likely an issue anyway, just something not studied as extensively). Still hurt like hell, but I did get it replaced when the 5 years was up because the upsides outweigh the downsides for me.

I think that overall there is a lot more willingness to use it in women who have not given birth but it is still rarely presented as the primary option.

In my case I have tried just about everything except the copper IUD, the implant, and the shots. Maybe skipped one or two of the different hormone combinations, but I have been on the Pill, the patch, the ring, and now Mirena for …guess this is year 6. Up until the Mirena, none of it was for actual birth control.

That was actually part of what prompted my switch to the Mirena, because the failure rate is low (on the level of a vasectomy) and there’s no difference between the ideal use rate and the actual use rate. And I don’t have to remember to do anything.

Not dealing with that time of the month anymore is just the best bonus ever.

It is a possible side effect of the Mirena, not a guarantee. I don’t mind this side effect. This side effect is up there with kittens and rainbows.

It throws the doctors off though when I go and they ask when my last period was and I can’t remember but I am pretty sure it was 6 years ago. (Note to our male Lizards: this is standard so they can figure out if there’s some possibility you are pregnant. Some places just skip to giving you a cup to pee in for a pregnancy test right away.)

Breast cancer in my family tends to be post-menopause, at least.

A key Republican lawmaker is renewing efforts to repeal Wisconsin’s alternative minimum tax, which mostly applies to the state’s high earners, and Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald has signaled broader support for the move among GOP lawmakers.

Rep. Dale Kooyenga, vice chairman of the budget-writing Joint Finance Committee, said Thursday that he’s proposing to repeal the tax through a broader tax package that would be revenue-neutral — meaning any tax cuts would be offset by corresponding revenue increases. The package also would reduce the so-called marriage penalty in the income tax code and overhaul the state sales tax on hotel rooms. The latter move would generate additional revenue, Kooyenga said.

Kooyenga, R-Brookfield, unsuccessfully pushed to repeal the alternative minimum tax two years ago. The tax is meant to ensure filers with large amounts of tax deductions or exclusions pay a minimum amount of income tax.

This time, Fitzgerald, R-Juneau, has indicated broader support for the move, telling the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that Republican lawmakers are working to eliminate the tax.

It is definitely a memory hog. I would switch, except for the fact that I am doing Google ad rating as a part time job. It is essential to clear the cache on a semi-regular basis, but I highly recommend doing as I did: download the latest version and replace what you are running now. The difference for me is night and day.

One of my worst panic moments was when I brought a 1.4M boot floppy to demo something I’d coded up to show a sysadmin friend at a university, on his personal workstation. He’d gone to get a soda or coffee when I noticed that his Drive C was no longer showing up.

I ejected the boot disk and re-booted and all was well. My boot disk used DOS 3.3, but his machine used DOS 5.

I always updated to the latest version of Chrome. I still find though that when going to Google’s own websites (like Plus, or Youtube) that the memory use and CPU can go way up. If you are a registered user of the above, for Chrome seems to start some sort of caching or searching, I supposed in order to be “smart”.

While both my daughters are married and take advantage of BC, the primary reason they take pills is to treat PCOS. They are in the same situation as the friend that Sandra Fluke discussed in her testimony. It makes me furious that a bunch of old guys feel they should be denied reimbursement for medication unless they provide “proof” that it’s needed for other than BC. I make this point to all my Republican coworkers when the subject is raised. Tends to make them uncomfortable.

I was 12 when I started taking BC because my cramps were so bad; the likely diagnosis is endometriosis (although it has never been completely confirmed).

I will happily go into as much detail as necessary to make anyone uncomfortable if they want to advocate getting between me and my birth control for some stupid religious beliefs. You can take your religious beliefs and stuff them in your ear; I like being a functional human the entire month.

I hate it when residents don’t do the prep, i.e., not only don’t do a modicum of cleaning up beforehand but don’t think about the people who make their residences look good. We always bake cookies, or at least order donuts, and brew bad ass mud before workers come over.

While both my daughters are married and take advantage of BC, the primary reason they take pills is to treat PCOS. They are in the same situation as the friend that Sandra Fluke discussed in her testimony. It makes me furious that a bunch of old guys feel they should be denied reimbursement for medication unless they provide “proof” that it’s needed for other than BC. I make this point to all my Republican coworkers when the subject is raised. Tends to make them uncomfortable.

I totally get this argument and it is entirely legitimate. It also pisses me the hell off because it doesn’t matter why it is prescribed. It is no one else’s fucking business and no explanation should be required. The argument suggests “are you sick or a slut?” Avoiding an unwanted pregnancy is a plenty powerful reason and a woman’s right to determine her reproductive fate.

I was 12 when I started taking BC because my cramps were so bad; the likely diagnosis is endometriosis (although it has never been completely confirmed).

I will happily go into as much detail as necessary to make anyone uncomfortable if they want to advocate getting between me and my birth control for some stupid religious beliefs. You can take your religious beliefs and stuff them in your ear; I like being a functional human the entire month.

It was endometriosis that resulting in my begging for a hysterectomy. The pain was so intense for about 4 days a month I couldn’t function. My gyn said the contractions were equivalent to giving birth to triplets every month. No meds would dull the pain that doubled me over.

Tape is your friend, use it on both edges of where your caulk line is. It takes time and patience to do, but it is so much easier to reajust tape then clean up caulk. I just finished all my windows in my new old house, and they are perfect.

We’ve had Prime for three, maybe four years. It’s an incredible value, for several reasons—including the free two-day shipping on most purchases.

And yes… BOSCH!!! Holy crap, what a show!!!! Remember back in the old days, when TV shows had those (sometimes-extremely-cool) opening sequences, or title sequences? Bosch brings it back. And then, of course, there’s the wonderful series itself.
