I am not Charles but I am guessing whatever his embedded stuff is doing doesn’t recognize the m.youtube prefix versus the normal one (www.youtube or whatever).

m.youtube.com

You have to use the web-based URL, not the mobile URL. You have to remove the letter m after “http://” in the URL.

My problem is, everybody else gets the start screen for the video to show in their post. All I get is a button that says “Video” (or whatever I choose to put on it).

Just searching the word “video”, this is the first one that comes up. It’s no hardship—all you have to do is hit the button and the screen apears, but everybody else’s shows automatically.

I’m trying to look for patterns in the web addresses, because I think Charles uses regexes to pull out the stuff for embedding.

Okay the story… it was at Bradley U in Peoria, Ilinois in 1971. Went to this guy’s dorm room in Geisert Hall and that song was playing. His roomie was lying on his bunk bed tripping his ass off. Dunno what he’d swallowed but it was real meaningful to him. The guy I went there with was surely hoping to get somewhere with me but his roomie wasn’t helping - kept jumping up and putting that same song on over and over again. I was like, I think I’ll go back to my dorm now, and the guy was like, no stay, we can play a different song. LOL

He didn’t get there that night… or ever… but we all ended up friends in the end.

He was in HK in spring 2013 sometime. There is a slight chance he provided them with clues to hack the OPM systems, but I doubt he provided them with access codes, etc., since he was in a different branch of the government.

More evidence that religion should stay out of public policy making. God did not tell humans, “Just do whatever the fuck you want to the Earth. I’ll take care of it, OK?” God told humans to be stewards. If anything, he said he’d make sure the next time he had to clean things up, he wasn’t going to mess around with global flood waters.

This is awful, to think that children would be driven to this. It sounds as though the mother may have been abused, and the kids were victims of both parents.

China ‘left behind’ kids take own lives

skynews.com.au

Four siblings, aged between five and 13 and left unattended by their parents for months, apparently took their own lives in southwest China.

The children, a boy and his younger sisters, were found by a villager while struggling with convulsions after drinking pesticide late on Tuesday at their home in Bijie in the remote province of Guizhou, the official Xinhua news agency said, highlighting the plight faced by rural children left behind by their migrant guardians.

(snip)

Offspring of China’s vast army of migrant workers, referred to as “left behind children”, often stay in their rural homes, usually with their ageing grandparents, partly because access to kindergartens and schools in cities is either extremely hard to obtain or expensive.

56 wheat-dogghazi-mailgate  Jun 12, 2015 3:52:35am

re: #55 Justanotherhuman

Guizhou is one of the poorest provinces in China, FWIW. But the situation there is common across China, including where I am. The hukou system means that every citizen can only get local public services in their place of birth. So parents who leave their village to work in factories elsewhere cannot take their kids with them, because the kids can’t attend school near their parents’ place of work. Meanwhile, the big cities fear loosening the system will inundate their school systems with kids from rural provinces.

Grandparents are often illiterate, or maybe got only a grade school education, so they are ill prepared to deal with their grandkids’ education. As a result, many kids are simply terrors to teach, according to my former students who are now teaching in rural schools. The kids see no reason to learn, and with no parental support at home, they can run wild when not in school.

Reformers here are warning that China will have a huge juvenile delinquency problem if the government can’t address this enormous social dilemma.

I teach many former “left behind” kids, who managed to do well enough in school and pass the national college entrance exam to enter college. Often, they are the first in their village to attend college. While I am no longer in loco parentis, as I was while a US high school teacher, I sometimes end up being a surrogate parent to some students. They ask me for advice about non-academic stuff, for example. I try to support their activities by attending as many as I can — kind of like Dad going to your school plays.

It’s not in my contract. I just do it because I should.

WASHINGTON—The National Security Agency ended a program used to spy on German Chancellor Angela Merkel and a number of other world leaders after an internal Obama administration review started this summer revealed to the White House the existence of the operation, U.S. officials said.

[…]

The White House cut off some monitoring programs after learning of them, including the one tracking Ms. Merkel and some other world leaders, a senior U.S. official said. Other programs have been slated for termination but haven’t been phased out completely yet, officials said.

The account suggests President Barack Obama went nearly five years without knowing his own spies were bugging the phones of world leaders. Officials said the NSA has so many eavesdropping operations under way that it wouldn’t have been practical to brief him on all of them.

Officials said the U.S. already has stopped collection efforts against Ms. Merkel and a number of other world leaders.

I haven’t gotten involved in the commentary about her yet, but my initial feelings of the situation are looking at her honesty. Like her mindset and her heart are in the right place, but within the current protest movement, and a general idea of equality, honesty is of major importance.

It kind of reminds me of a boxer who’s name is slipping my mind for the moment. He was identified as Jewish despite not being Jewish, but since he had a Jewish trainer and a Jewish manager and the ‘identification’ of him came from anti-semites, he went along with it and said that he was Jewish in interviews.

This was back during the time when Jews dominated boxing, so it might have been a little more self-serving than the legend, but he definitely spoke out against anti-semitism pugnaciously.

Race/ethnicity, apart from being social constructs to a significant degree, are also personal constructs. There are no objective rules for determining them.

I once made a list of high-level Bolshevik/communist party functionaries with their ethnicities in brackets to debunk a well-known antisemitic claim. I listed Kamenev (Rozenfeld) as Jewish, to which someone objected that he didn’t count since only his father was Jewish, and traditionally Jewishness is determined by the mother. To which I replied that Kamenev self-identified as Jewish (judging by his party card) and that maternal lineage is a religious requirement which doesn’t necessary hold for those who aren’t adherents of Judaism.

The fact is, we were both right. We just subjectively chose different criteria.

I’m always fascinated by people who do this. It used to be a lot easier—back before we had records that followed us around, people could abandon their old identities, move somewhere else, and claim a new history. I think that this is one of the reasons why ‘manners’ and stuff like what cutlery to use used to be really important: it was to prevent people from pretending they were from a class that they weren’t.

The fact is, we were both right. We just subjectively chose different criteria.

With any effort we could find four or five definitions of race, all more or less useful. One could be based on physiology, probably the least useful. There are certainly real-world legal definitions, carrying hard benefits and deficits. There is sociological race, on which social engineering efforts are based, and cultural definitions that rely heavily on self-identification and community consensus. So race is real and unreal simultaneously, like a cat.

My favorite perspective is Brazilian, with a great number of very permeable linguistic distinctions. “Money makes the skin lighter.”

This Seattle case might lead to some interesting definitional revisions.

A total fraud.

You can be white and listen to Black people, but you can never come from where they are and lead them in overcoming their oppression. The history is there, and that can’t ever be changed.

And I absolutely feel the same way about the oppression of women, along with the divide between Black and White women, and even class/caste. Men can be empathic or whatever you want to call it, but they can never experience the entirety of women’s lives. Just as women can’t that of men.

Some people just can’t take “no” for an answer. And I’m assuming this was when she was still a “white woman” and not posing. This was about power and money and she simply didn’t appear to have the qualifications.

“Dolezal said she submitted a written proposal to the Human Rights Education Institute’s board last week suggesting they give her compensation and authority equivalent to that of the executive director’s position. She gave the board three days to make a decision, and offered her two weeks’ notice if they did not accept her proposal.

“Muehlbach wouldn’t discuss the proposal, but said, “She made some demands that we weren’t able to accept.”

Not sure what the wingnuts expect to get out of this, other than to publicize even more how much they abhor African Americans (and other racial and demographic minorities in general), public policies that might benefit African Americans, and any person or group who acts on their behalf.

Trans people in general don’t claim to not have been born with the biological sex they were, and in fact often make the point that that biological sex doesn’t match their gender and that that’s why they face problems. Not all trans people want to ‘pass’ as members of the opposite sex, a lot of them identify publicly as trans, with that identification being important to them.

Now, I do think you’re onto something interesting that in the US, anyway, someone saying they were born white but identified as black, publically, would have that identification rejected by nearly everyone, rejected by racists as threatening to their race-is-important-view, and rejected by at least a lot of black people as “you don’t have the history to claim that, you didn’t undergo a black childhood”.

I’m not sure how this is a response to what I said.

To quote from the article Alouette cited above:

Is this a question of fantasy? Delusion? Is the mantle of being a “strong Black woman” critical to her soul view? Right now a lot of African Americans are confused by this story. Does she want “everything but the burden”? Or is the burden what she craves? We are bemused and befuddled but this is for sure, if Rachel wanted in on the tribe, there were much easier ways to achieve that.

If you look at it from that perspective, it’s not hard to go a little soft on Rachel. White culture in America is a victim of its own urge to be Israel Zangwill’s “melting pot.” Black culture despite losing an enormous amount during our forced exile and humiliating assimilation process became meaningful and rich and interesting because it had goals and movements and aspirations. White culture’s urge towards appropriation rather than assimilation is not a surprise, it’s a symptom.

I wish Rachel Dolezal well in her search for her authentic self. Maybe she is the tan sister with the mixed-chick hair. Maybe she’s going to have a change of heart in how she expresses herself. Either way, her contributions for the good have been appreciated and if she wants in on our tribe, her application is already filled out.

Black people don’t have monolithic views.

A lot of the anger comes from the appropriation that her lies accomplished more than the lies themselves. That Dolezal took jobs that otherwise would have gone to a black person. Sure, the cases are not causally symmetrical - when a person with light skin self-identifies as black, it’s an issue of socialization rather than innate drive.

But if the end result is analogous…

The end result is not always analogous. It’s only analogous for a ‘passing’ trans person who conceals their original biological sex. In my experience, this is rare, most of my trans friends are open about having been born with the biological sex they were. It is generally important to them to identify in that way, in order to make others aware of the issue of transexuality.

If she had been honest about having been white, but identifying as black—well, like I said, I don’t think it would be accepted in the US, but it’d be a lot more analogous.

Now, there definitely are trans people who completely ‘pass’, and consider their original biological gender irrelevant and conceal it, without being dishonest, just completely invested in their gender identification. In that case, the analogy is there. I’m just saying when you open up the trans issue as an analogy you’re adding in a whole other spectrum of issues that will just be confusing rather than clarifying. As part of a discussion it’s interesting, but the analogy doesn’t clarify the situation.

I have. As I said, black people are not monolithic, nor do they have monolithic views. That’s why I quoted the article I did.

I’m not sure what you’re not understanding about what I’m saying. All that I am saying is that saying the phrase “Black people are X” or “Black people feel X” isn’t something that a non-black person should say (or, really, a black person, but for different reasons), and I think you actually agree.

You can say “A lot of black people aren’t happy with this”, and that’s non-problematic. But if you say “black people aren’t happy with this”, you turn them from a collection of individuals with individual views, into a monolithic block identified solely by race.

There aren’t. You can have people who are clearly part of the group who lack those markers, and people who are clearly outside the group that has them. Genetic information is indicative but not determinative.

re: #256 Nyet

Actually the example I provided in the comment you are responding to challenges exactly this claim.

You can challenge the claim that there isn’t “objective rules” but it doesn’t change the fact there are indeed objective, scientific classifications of race and ethnicity based on germline genetics.

All they can do is scream about the behavior of a ‘left’ that doesn’t exist outside of their minds. It’s all they’ve got.

I don’t see the point on focusing on her lies while largely ignoring the positions those lies bought. Dolezal leveraged her bullshit into a position heading the local NAACP, an adjunct professorship in African studies and a civilian police oversight position. Few people are focusing on that last one but it’s by far the most troubling since she applied under false pretenses and the interaction between the police and black citizens is notoriously fraught with the misapplication of force.

There really aren’t. Race is not a coherent biological construct in any way. Ancestry is. Ancestry is not race. Ancestries contain multiple ‘races’ non-problematically. The presence or absence of markers may suggest ancestry but it is not definite.

Ethnicity I don’t even know what to say to. In no way is ethnicity a hard-science term, it is only a social-science term.

If I didn’t know that activist Shaun King identifies as black, I would have thought he is a white guy.

Some blacks think Pushkin was black because of his ancestry. For me he has always and will always be a white guy.

No amount of genetic information will ever solve these issues.

The system deserved to be gamed. None of those positions are inherently dependent on race. Sure, but I bet he didn’t lie on his SF171. This woman apparently created an entirely false history. I could almost excuse her claiming she was African-America if it weren’t for the other layers of fabrication on top of that.

I’m wondering if this revelation won’t chase some more previous lies out of the bushes, as her former associates or employers put two and two together.

I’m not going to get into a discussion over the merits of affirmative action in general. But I will say that a civilian oversight board handling police misconduct in this country needs to always have at least one person on it who understands from personal experience what it means to grow up as an african-american. News outlet: Oh, you’re Charles Johnson from Little Green Footballs?

CCJ: Uh, no. That’s an irrelevant website. No one goes there anymore.

News outlet: (click).

CCJ: Hello? Hello?

re: #328 Fourth Football of the Apocalypse

Wish we could go back in time to read the Tweets from the Southern Baptist Convention when this happened.

No kidding. I know they like to say gay marriage bans are different than interracial bans since sexuality and race are different things but the fact of the matter is interracial bans were used using biblical justification too.

Fellow gamers. Been replaying Medal of Honor: Allied Assault. Still a solid FPS after all these years. I wouldn’t mind WWII FPS’s making a come back.

Hey all. Damn it is already hot and humid here in Columbus. Looking at the long range forecast I think the deep south climate is moving north. We have high 80s into 90s with 50% chances of thunderstorms everyday next week. And it isn’t late July/August.

I see the big topic (and fast moving comments…damn) is Rachel Dolezal. Interesting story. I just don’t get the outrage. Maybe she suffers some kind of mental health issues.

What really amazes me is little Benny Shapiro going off on twitter. What’s his problem? He’s been faking being a human being for years now.

And her story again touches on the race issues in this country. What are the White folk all upset about? Is it that someone would want to come off as Black and they can’t figure out why anyone would want to ‘lower’ their social class?

If that be it, then you have admitted that Whites have indeed made Blacks lesser in their eyes. Are you offended anyone White would ever want to be Black? Maybe they all should try it sometime. Might learn a lot.

Very strange social dynamics going on. Not unusual though.

re: #270 Decatur Deb

The system deserved to be gamed. None of those positions are inherently dependent on race. A buddy at one of my installations was the chief of the HR staff shop charged with eliminating gender discrimination. At a seminar a lady asked how he, a black male, got that slot. His answer: “I submitted an SF-171 (CV) and was chosen on merit.”

Thank you. A point I was going to make but in a joking way.

Maybe the White people she deceived felt more comfortable with this particular Black Person. And to me that again shows who has the real issues. And in a weird way, I wonder if that wasn’t a bit of her reasoning.

White is a color. Just sayin’.

Actually from a study of color as an art student (The Munsell Theory) white is the absence of color and black is a saturation of all color.

Which is why Black folks are way cool, they have it all going on! ////

After the years and years they’ve spent demonizing feminists, this shows that the GOP is out of touch for the demonization, and poor Carly is out of touch for believing that the GOP would be the least bit interested in rebuilding the bridge they burned so long ago.

In a strange way, they deserve each other.

Reclaim? It was never yours to “claim”. Liberals embrace feminism because we well believe in equality of the sexes, that women should be paid the same as men, and that they should have the say with their bodies. Your side OTOH Carly gave the world the term “feminazi” so take up with Rush.
