Blogger Linked to Chuck Johnson’s Crusade Against Thad Cochran Sentenced to 2.5 Years in Prison

Far right blogger Clayton Kelly, an associate of cyberstalker Chuck C. Johnson in his crusade to smear Sen. Thad Cochran in Mississippi, has now been sentenced to 2 and a half years in prison for conspiring to take video of Cochran’s wife as she lay bedridden in a nursing home.

Kelly on Monday was sentenced to 2 1/2 years in prison for his role in the conspiracy to photograph the late wife of Sen. Thad Cochran as she lay in her nursing home bed suffering dementia. John Mary and Richard Sager had previously pleaded guilty and got no jail time in exchange for their cooperation. Another defendant, Richland attorney Mark Mayfield, committed suicide in June 2014, about a month after his arrest.

Kelly, an aspiring political blogger, was egged on by others to photograph Rose Cochran at St. Catherine’s Village nursing home. He used the image in a political hit piece video against Cochran, who was in the biggest political battle of his long career in his re-election battle against tea party challenger state Sen. Chris McDaniel.

Records released Monday show online correspondence between Kelly, other defendants and others about the scheme to create a video showing Cochran was having an affair with a longtime staffer while his wife languished in a nursing home.

From testimony from an investigator and records introduced Monday, it appears Mary, a former radio talk show host and tea party leader from Hattiesburg, was the ring leader in the plan to photograph Rose Cochran and make the hit piece video.

[…]

Chapman said it’s been his experience with armed robberies and other crimes that the smarter criminals talk the less intelligent ones into doing the actual crime.

“This defendant probably fits into that category,” Chapman said before sentencing Kelly.

Chuck C. Johnson offered a $2000 bounty for photos of Cochran’s wife in the nursing home (screenshots from Google’s cache):

… and continued to defend Clayton Kelly on Twitter for this disgusting scheme, even after he was arrested and charged:

Kelly’s wife apparently tried to talk him out of it:

The judge noted a statement from Kelly’s wife that “I told him it was a stupid idea and that it was just plain wrong,” and said he couldn’t sum it up any better.

He should have listened to her.

Note: Chuck Johnson was subpoenaed to appear before a grand jury in Mississippi in a related case, but ignored it.

UPDATE at 6/15/15 6:54:03 pm by Charles Johnson

Here are some of the creepy messages these right wing conspirators exchanged as they schemed to break into the nursing home: ‘Great Work, Ace Ventura’: Cochran Photo Case Messages.

It was a disgusting thing they did to the senator’s wife. Really shows you that they’ll do anything for power.

Then you add the good behavior and stuff like that to the 2.5 which come make it shorter. Ok understand now.

Should we be worried about Chuckie? Maybe check in with #HotAsianWife to see how he’s doing? Put him on 72-hr watch? Something?

On a serious note, though… I think he could blow his top, and it could be very ugly.

OT (photography question) - This might be a stupid question, but I can’t figure it out and would rather look stupid than continue not knowing.

In the specs for some lenses the angle of view is indicated in degrees. I understand what that means. Others show degrees followed by what looks like feet:

59° 10’
57° 30’
107° 30’ - 74° 20’

That 2nd number has me stumped and Google isn’t helping. Anyone?

I don’t think he’ll have to worry about turning out the base in the general, these people really hate democrats, like it’s all they live for type of hate. The name definitely kills him in the general though. I think the hard part for him in the primary is that the establishment candidate has to have a feeling of inevitability and Jeb just doesn’t have that, it wasn’t that long ago when Christie held the “it’s his turn” position before that bridgegate thing went down. So that support will probably bleed to a few other candidates (likely Walker). So it depends on how the hardcore vote splits, if they do it like last time and there is a new front runner every week a candidate like Jeb can pull it off, if someone like Walker holds some of the establishment support while still managing a good chunk of the crazy in each state it will go to that person.

It’s true that the typical member of the GOP base hates the Democrats with mindless ferocity. However, these people also really despise Republicans they see as sellouts or traitors to their cause. From their point of view, the losses of McCain in 2008 and Romney in 2012 were both failures caused by insufficiently conservative GOP nominees. Conservative orthodoxy also requires that W Bush be regarded as a RINO, in order to protect conservative ideology from any criticism based on its results in practice.

For Jeb! to get the nomination, he’s going to have to be the last person standing as the loons wipe each other out, and he’s also going to have to do plenty of negative campaigning against the loons.

All this taken together is pretty much the worst possible case for an establishment GOP candidate to motivate the GOP base in a general election.

What I see in this GOP primary that wasn’t there in 2012 is Walker, a fully bought tool of the Koch brothers. That’s probably the biggest single obstacle Jeb! has in the primary.

It will be interesting to see how the freak of the week pattern plays out with Walker and Bush both having the $$$ to outlast everyone else.

Over the weekend, we had torrential rains which resulted in the sewer backing up in the basement. Fortunately it was contained to the unfinished rooms and didn’t get to the man cave. Guitars are safe! But what a nasty mess. Got everything cleaned up and sanitized.

Major flood and storm warnings today, so I decided to come home around lunchtime to keep an eye on the basement. This weekend was the first time we’ve had a problem, but was worried. Sure enough, torrential rains again and floor drains began to fountain nastiness again.

Got lucky. Was able to contain it to the concrete floors. Even more lucky, called the city and they came out within the hour to check the sewers. Most lucky, was able to get a highly recommended guy to agree to come over at 5 pm to clear the sewer line. All should be good now. Sigh.

After a day like today, it’s cathartic to watch a bunch of guys with sticks beat each other up. Am I a bad person? ;)

And the Hawks score!

Hey austin_blue! Wuz wunderin’ ‘bout ye.

We do 14 concerts in fourteen days, all classical, all college and post graduate kids, all on scholarship. They get there, they pay for food, and we cover the rest, which includes mentors, lodging, and music (which ain’t cheap).

Lots of chamber, but two large orchestral concerts and one chamber orchestra concert, with chorus. The big finish was Saturday, with Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun and Daphnis and Chloe as the showstoppers. D&C is a monster.

Great festival, wonderful music, but damn, I’m worn out carting tymps and marimbas to various venues and setting up chairs and podia, getting into ceilings and setting lights, building soloist’s platforms, and everything else that nuts-and-bolts production requires.

From the Final Fantasy VII fansite the LifeStream.

A statement on Square Portal has confirmed that the game is being redeveloped from the ground up, unlike the many recent ports of the game, the latest of which was announced at last year’s PlayStation Experience.

Today, we’re finally able to talk about a long-awaited announcement that could even be count as a miracle amongst Final Fantasy community. After years of Final Fantasy VII fans demanding the nearly impossible to happen, they have made the impossible possible - Final Fantasy VII is getting a real remake for the new-generation consoles. We repeat: it’s not a port or a small remaster with old models, but a completely new version of the classic role-playing game which was revealed at Sony’s E3 press briefing. The game is developed in collaboration between Square Enix and Cyberconnect 2 and has been in the works for a while now - about a year and half. Earlier this year, Cyberconnect2 told Famitsu that they are working hard on creating photo-realistic RPG experience with Unreal Engine 4. It’s very likely Final Fantasy VII Remake is running on it too.

Fair point. However, I just don’t see a way for Jeb! to win. Even if he wins the primary, he’d be doomed in the general by the combination of relatively low turnout among the GOP base, and the Bush name among sane people.

The Republican turnout wouldn’t be low. Clinton is so hated by the GOP right wing (I know, a pleonasm) that they’d turn out to defeat her. The reverse wouldn’t be as true. In fact, I think that having Clinton as opponent is Bush’s only chance of ever being elected president.

re: #62 EPR-radar

Fair point. However, I just don’t see a way for Jeb! to win. Even if he wins the primary, he’d be doomed in the general by the combination of relatively low turnout among the GOP base, and the Bush name among sane people.

re: #194 Pip’s Squeak

The Republican turnout wouldn’t be low. Clinton is so hated by the GOP right wing (I know, a pleonasm) that they’d turn out to defeat her. The reverse wouldn’t be as true. In fact, I think that having Clinton as opponent is Bush’s only chance of ever being elected president.

Both points are fair, but it’s (very) early days. Let’s see how Sanders and O’Malley push Clinton from the left, and how the myriad of Gaspers push Jeb from the right.

Yes, the Gaspers hate the Hildebeast, but that is tempered by Jeb being viewed as another RINO. The bigger problem for the R’s is that they are being, slowly, demographically fucked.

If the D’s can actually get black and brown people to show up and vote on election day, they’ll take the Executive and the Senate. The House is a gerrymandered lost cause until the D’s take back some State Legislatures.

A Republican “moderate” these days is just a squish who thinks if he says that he wants to leave gay marriage up to the states rather than thumping a Bible and threatening to remove any judge who rules in favor, he sounds “reasonable.”

Well, that’s done for two years, m’dear. Hopefully, open carry on all University campuses in Texas (well, the public ones) won’t result in blazing shootouts between the Phi Delt’s and the Sigma Nu’s after pledge drive keggers. But I’m not holding my breath.

Damn, that shit has been going on since I was in school over 20 years ago. There was a “Robin Hood” plan at that time, so the tiny school district with a Nuclear power plant in its back yard was coughing up funds for the inner city poors in Houston.

I never needed any mansplaining or racistsplaining to understand that the bulk of the information that Snowden compromised was unrelated to his claims of uncovering illegal government activity.

260 Nyet  Jun 16, 2015 2:05:37am

This paragraph from Schindler’s article shows his typical dishonesty:

Ironically, given the intense debate over the Snowden revelations in Germany, it has been this country where the real unraveling of the storyline has begun. The end of the year-long Federal inquiry into Snowden’s allegation’s led by Attorney General Harald Range, without any charges against NSA, has disappointed many admirers of Snowden. Yet this inquiry failed due to a lack of hard evidence. Some of the documents offered as “proof” of NSA espionage against Chancellor Angela Merkel are copies, not originals, and therefore lack probative value.

The inquiry was not into Snowden’s allegations. The allegations were by Spiegel which relied on a copy of a document supplied by a source which is not known to us. The allegations concerned spying on Merkel’s phone, which is a proven fact. However there were no proofs that would be accepted by a German court - in large part due to the NSA’s stonewalling. How that means that anyone’s story is falling apart is beyond me.

I have no doubt in my mind, that regardless of who is criticizing Snowden, he did this country a terrible disservice when he stole those documents.

And I consider him a liar, thief and traitor. He has zero loyalty to any citizen of this country and far less than those he’s critical of.

So, you can call me a wingnut for those thoughts if you wish.

Um, just because I condemn relying on bigots or misrepresenting their opinions as those of “the Germans” doesn’t mean that I claim that everything they say is false. Even Upchuck was right several times, it’s not an excuse for relying on him.

Goals don’t always justify the means.

268 Justanotherhuman  Jun 16, 2015 2:40:25am

re: #267 Nyet

I’m not “relying” on Schindler’s opinions. I never did. I’ve always thought there was something very hinky about Snowden, a low-ranking contractor, and the motives of Greenwald and Poitras, and their subsequent actions. It’s very easy for ex-pats like those 2 to criticize this country and push their own self-colored opinions since they obviously have little to lose by doing so. By pushing their own motives in “protecting” and elevating Snowden to some kind of perverted “martyrdom” and “sainthood”, they’ve handily manipulated the narrative surrounding this entire body of treason. They’re clever, but it almost rises to the level of a Machiavellian plot. Almost.

I’m watching the Roast of Justin Bieber on YouTube, because I’m a glutton for punishment.

Right off the bat, the host says:

“Justin Bieber has tens of millions of fans, most of them are either in middle schools, or standing at least 500 feet away from one.”

BOOM!

Indeed.

re: #268 Justanotherhuman

Almost.

Again, we’re not arguing about Snowden. We mostly agree about him. He’s a schmuck who should answer before an American court, end of story.

It’s about how one goes about criticizing him. If tomorrow Rush Limbaugh will write a great article summarizing anti-Snowden arguments, I will object to posting it not because Limbaugh will or will not be correct, but because it’s Limbaugh. (Note that I won’t say “it’s Limbaugh, so his arguments are incorrect” - that’s an ad hominem fallacy. His correctness or lack thereof would be aside).

Schindler has shown through multiple tweets that he’s a highbrow analog to Rush.

298 Nyet  Jun 16, 2015 4:56:27am

So I took a look, and Schindler is still repeating the false claims about the Handygate:

20committee. com/2015/06/12/snowden-is-a-fraud

Back in December, Attorney General Range offered a warning about the dubious nature of much of the “evidence” against NSA:

The document presented in public as proof of an actual tapping of the mobile phone is not an authentic surveillance order by the NSA. It does not come from the NSA database. There is no proof at the moment which could lead to charges that Chancellor Merkel’s phone connection data was collected or her calls tapped.

Got that? That’s the polite, legalistic way of saying the Snowden claims are backed by faked NSA documents, as has been clear for some time to anybody who understands counterintelligence and the SIGINT system. This should surprise no one, since using fake or doctored Western intelligence documents to embarrass democracies is a venerable tradition for Russian intelligence — the proper espionage term is Active Measures — and since Snowden’s been in Moscow for the last two years and shows no signs of going anywhere else anytime soon, two and two can be added together here.

No, moron, it’s a polite way of saying that no matter how tantalizing a document looks, and no matter that the spying on Merkel’s phone has been confirmed by the WH through WSJ, a copy is still a copy and thus doesn’t stand up to a scrutiny in a German court. In fact, the prosecutor explicitly denied that the document is a fake. I wrote about it at some length a few months ago. (Plus, to repeat, those are not “Snowden’s claims”.)

So John Schindler is either a liar or an ignoramus.

A few years ago we went to a focus group run by Court TV. They had two groups of 20 people and they had them go through our site, Court TV’s site and the Drudge Report. And almost to a person, they talked about the Drudge Report as the worst designed site they’d ever seen, and all I could think of is that it’s the perfect site for what he does. And they were crapping on it, saying ‘It’s the ugliest site I’ve ever seen.’ But it works unbelievably well for what he’s doing.”

Good morning Lizards from a very hazy Philadelphia.

Congratulations to the Blackhawks on winning another Stanley Cup. A well-played series and Crawford was stellar in goal when it counted. My neighbor the Tampa Bay fan is still a touch upset.

Apartment A/C is still on the fritz. A contractor is coming in today and hopefully it will get fixed. Had the windows open even though it was 80F outside simply to have better air circulation. And it cooled down outside into the 70s once some rain went through the area. So it eventually got cool enough to sleep, but was still horribly humid. (And *still* first world problems!)

Feline Overlords got an opportunity last night to scamper into the apartment hallway and took it. And didn’t come back. Chat Noir went to the far end of the hall, went under a low couch, and just laid there on the tile. Not a bad idea since that was much cooler than being in the apartment. Tuxedo Cat wandered about the hall and essentially did not want to come back in either.

On the food front the stuffed peppers from Saturday are gone. Have meatballs from Sunday, red sauce I made last night, and plans for pasta with meatballs either tonight or tomorrow. Need to get a nice loaf of bread to go with that.

Back to work. Need another cup of coffee and some motivation to work on documentation and a “what if” scenario since we have a data problem* looming that needs to be addressed in the next few months.

* - Some brilliant person decided that the year indicator in our abstract naming convention for batch numbers would only be one digit; e.g. 0-9. And, guess what, that decision was about eight years ago.

There’s a difference between wanting the same privileges and opportunities, equality, as men (which the majority of women want, as well as minorities) than changing your physical being. Reassigning yourself a “gender” doesn’t mean you belong to that sex.

Don’t forget this one:

In its first enforcement action involving the abuse of so-called pro forma accounting, the Securities and Exchange Commission yesterday charged that Trump Hotels and Casino Inc. had ”recklessly” misled shareholders in 1999.

Trump Hotels agreed to settle the charges and consented to the S.E.C.’s cease-and-desist order, acknowledging its findings without admitting or denying them. The company, whose chairman is Donald J. Trump, will not pay a fine.

In recent years, companies in many industries have emphasized their pro forma financial results as the preferred measure of their performance. Wall Street analysts have often accepted the companies’ logic.

The pro forma numbers typically exclude costs involving mergers, interest, taxes and other charges. Pro forma calculations do not conform to generally accepted accounting principles, and the S.E.C.’s former chief accountant observed that pro forma statements tend to be ”E.B.S.” accounting, for ”everything but bad stuff.”

Jeb Bush’s notion of what constitutes a broken military is itself … broken.

I have no doubt that Jeb thinks that his path to win 2016 is to make it sound like the military is broken and can be rolled over by any third rate nation and that our carrier fleet is falling apart or can be hulled by Iranian missiles without us even seeing them coming.

We’d just have to ignore that the US spends more on its military than the next 9/10 countries combined. That includes Russia and China, plus allies like Germany, France and the UK. And India. And Saudi Arabia.

Or that the US carrier fleet is set to start getting the Ford class carriers soon, upgrading our capabilities even further.

But you know what’s interesting - that for all his talk about spending more on the military, nothing said about paying service members more for their service, or increased VA services for service members who find themselves in need of mental health care etc.

It’s all a sham to get gullible right wingers to think that Obama’s gutted the military, when he’s done no such thing - in fact, the troop withdrawals from Iraq meant that those units have much needed downtime to regroup, rearm, and prepare for whatever comes next. That’s after years of nonstop fighting that wears down manpower and gear.

And we’d also have to ignore that Congress decided in its infinite wisdom to allow the military to buy gear it doesn’t want/need - like M1 tanks that are in surplus, and seeks to continue the F-35 boondoggle that will cost more than a trillion dollars for a plane that doesn’t do any of its supposed missions particularly well.

Leelah Alcorn (November 15, 1997 - December 28, 2014) was an American transgender girl whose suicide attracted international attention. Alcorn had posted a suicide note to her Tumblr blog, writing about societal standards affecting transgender people and expressing the hope that her death would create a dialogue about discrimination, abuse and lack of support for transgender people.
Assigned to the male gender at birth and given the name Joshua Ryan Alcorn, she was raised in a conservative Christian household in Ohio. At age 14, she came out as trans to her parents, Carla and Doug Alcorn, who refused to accept her female gender identity. When she was 16, they denied her request to undergo transition treatment, instead sending her to Christian conversion therapy with the intention of convincing her to reject her gender identity and accept her gender as assigned at birth. After she revealed her attraction toward males to her classmates, her parents removed her from school and revoked her access to social media. In her suicide note, Alcorn cited loneliness and alienation as key reasons for her decision to end her life and blamed her parents for causing these feelings. She committed suicide by walking out in front of oncoming traffic on the Interstate 71 highway.

That was in 2010, about the time she reported a hangman’s noose being left at her home. She was described as “multi-racial” then.

While she was education director, Dolezal, who is multiracial, said she was the victim of racial harassment, slurs and threats against her and her son by white supremacists.

On two occasions she reported finding hangman’s nooses tied to her garage’s rafters, and a swastika sticker on the door of the institute, The Spokesman-Review has reported.

re: #346 Nyet

To put it simply, I feel like a girl trapped in a boy’s body, and I’ve felt that way ever since I was 4. I never knew there was a word for that feeling, nor was it possible for a boy to become a girl, so I never told anyone and I just continued to do traditionally “boyish” things to try to fit in.

When I was 14, I learned what transgender meant and cried of happiness. After 10 years of confusion I finally understood who I was. I immediately told my mom, and she reacted extremely negatively, telling me that it was a phase, that I would never truly be a girl, that God doesn’t make mistakes, that I am wrong. If you are reading this, parents, please don’t tell this to your kids. Even if you are Christian or are against transgender people don’t ever say that to someone, especially your kid. That won’t do anything but make them hate them self. That’s exactly what it did to me.

My mom started taking me to a therapist, but would only take me to christian therapists, (who were all very biased) so I never actually got the therapy I needed to cure me of my depression. I only got more christians telling me that I was selfish and wrong and that I should look to God for help.

When I was 16 I realized that my parents would never come around, and that I would have to wait until I was 18 to start any sort of transitioning treatment, which absolutely broke my heart. The longer you wait, the harder it is to transition. I felt hopeless, that I was just going to look like a man in drag for the rest of my life. On my 16th birthday, when I didn’t receive consent from my parents to start transitioning, I cried myself to sleep.

No, it is not at all like a trans person being physically beaten up for having their own view of their sexual identity than the one being imposed on them by both men and women whose thinking is stuck in the Middle Ages.

re: #342 Justanotherhuman

Usually I’m with you on stuff, but here I am not. I know two transgender people personally, and I know it’s not a kind of “phase” or self-deception or fashion statement. It’s that deep down inside they don’t feel as if they belong in the body/gender that they have. And they have had this feeling since they were little. Biologically speaking, maleness or femaleness is not discrete; there’s a range of values, as it were. You might be born with the sex organs of one sex, but still have the hormones or innate psychological makeup of the other.

Since I don’t have this feeling, I can’t describe how it feels, but I can kind of understand how someone would feel it necessary for their own sanity or happiness or whatever to switch their gender. Both my transgender friends were women who will be (or already are) men now. They identify themselves as men, and since I’m not going to do the Crocodile Dundee thing and grab their crotch, I’ll take them at their word.

As for Caitlyn Jenner, she can be whatever she wants. No skin off my nose.

I’m going to be very blunt: Transgender people commit suicide far more often than almost any other group, they face employment discrimination, are more often subject to violence and harassment from random people and from law enforcement than almost any other group, depression, housing discrimination leading to homelessness…

But hey, those trans sure do have great lives, we just get to wear all the pretty clothes and look FABULOUS and get to use the womens restrooms…no, fuck, trans people actually suffer higher than normal UTI and kidney damage…due to not being able to use ANY public restrooms out of fear.

OK…I think I’m calming down…

re: #342 Justanotherhuman

Why do I get the feeling you just unloaded a whole cartful of seriously mixed up and fairly creepy baggage here?

How is it “innate”? Because someone obsesses about it over time? It didn’t matter that a 3 times married man of 6 kids didn’t see fit to stop living a lie far before he wanted to make a name for himself as a “female” in a houseful of women? This is a person of extreme privilege who must be bored shitless with his life, not to mention envious of all the estrogen circulating around him for so many years.

Gender Dysphoria does not work that way. As far as I know, it always starts early, and I’ve never heard of anything resembling developing it due to being around women (or being around strong women or famous women or…), and of course noone has EVER felt they needed to hide their minority status in the US out of fear…EVER…except for when they’ve needed to hide due to race, gender, sexuality, religion

If I had encouraged the Munchkin to keep saying that he wants to be me when he grows up and childishly played with my lipstick and bracelets, I would be grooming him for the same fate as the parents who believe a child knows what they’re “feeling” and start “transistioning” them before they even reach puberty. This is now a “thing” among the stupid and it’s being encouraged by other stupids.

Gender Dysphoria does not work that way. You don’t just say “I’m a girl now”, this requires long periods of time, and effort…its more work than almost anyone would choose to go through to usually end up in a WORSE place than they were at.

Seriously, fuck you.

You know, that is totally out of line.

Can you at least practice some common respect?

Yeah, Justanotherhuman has a different opinion. It may be generational.

Does that deserve that response.

We are all products of our times and what was accepted, and what we were taught.

Just like the views of some of the younger members here that are more open to LBGT issues are probably different from some of their parents. Do you just tell your parents to “fuck off.” Did you tell you grandparents that may have even more issue with someone like Caitlyn Jenner to fuck off too, or did you show common decency because you knew they just don’t understand.

But then, my thinking you are out of line is possibly generational too. So maybe I get a fuck you for pointing out that you and everyone that updinged you for being disrespectful to an elder have no respect.

I see justanotherhuman has logged out. I bet she is very upset. And that bothers me because it is obvious she finds discussion here pretty entertaining and a big part of her day. That may now be ruined for her. And for what reason?

Damn, sometimes I don’t understand humans doing what you and others just did. No feel for the person that said it. All you did was see her as an enemy. To me that is as out of line as what some of you thought of her comments.

I think a very heartfelt apology is warranted. But maybe I am old-time thinking that too.

Once again, the internet proves that it can kill off proper behavior.

What ever happened to what was considered the ‘high road.’

Also hard to evacuate during a tornado or hurricane.

So yes, when she began to spout about how it’s all just “imaginings” and how taking your kid’s nature into account is “child abuse”, and after re-reading Leelah’s story, I wrote what I thought. It goes far beyond a mere “different opinion”.

And you continue to miss the point.

Some people are not going to change. It’s been like that through the history of man.

This is a discussion board. She shared her opinion. You don’t like it, fine. But to say fuck you to her doesn’t make you some shining light for gender issues.

This is a discussion board. She was discussing the debate, wright or wrong.

Would she say that to someone directly, I don’t know, but everyone is treating it like she did. Would she prevent her grand kid from expressing his feminine side. I can’t say. Sure it would be tough on her given her thoughts.

But I am hopeful she is open minded enough that should that arise in her own family, maybe this day triggers her to consider it differently. Maybe she is already having a think about it now. Knowing her from this board, I think she is always open to reconsideration and learning. Which can be tough as an elder.

I think some of the members are shutting that door and that helps no one.

I remember some time ago an article about a plane crash stating that the cause of death of passengers had not yet been released. I’ll just leave that there.

A long time ago we were on a canoeing trip in Russia. A terrible storm came up thone night and one of the canoes on the bank started rolling towards me, I managed to jump out of the way just in time.

I imagined them reporting that to the authorities:
“Our American comrade was killed in a canoeing accident.”
- “How did he die?”
“He was run over!”

re: #535 ObserverArt

Damn, another comment to be responded to.

Context Obdi.

This is a discussion board. She was discussing the debate, wright or wrong.

She really wasn’t. She’s done this a bunch of times before, and she doesn’t listen at all to the other side, just spews venom at trans people and says it’s child abuse to respect the feelings of a trans kid.

Would she say that to someone directly, I don’t know, but everyone is treating it like she did. Would she prevent her grand kid from expressing his feminine side. I can’t say. Sure it would be tough on her given her thoughts.

We have trans members who read here, you know. She is saying it directly to people. Unless you think talking about how black people are dumb in the same room as them is okay ‘cuz you’re not directly addressing them.

But I am hopeful she is open minded enough that should that arise in her own family, maybe this day triggers her to consider it differently. Maybe she is already having a think about it now. Knowing her from this board, I think she is always open to reconsideration and learning. Which can be tough as an elder.

I haven’t seen any even remote sign of even beginning to consider having a think about possibly at some point in the future deigning in the least bit to consider any other point of view, and a reminder that her point of view is bigoted and causes actual harm.

I always give people the chance to grow and learn. Fuck yous don’t help that at all. And all I have been arguing is about respect. That doesn’t change and Sergey seems reluctant to acknowledge it was not needed.

I don’t have any data on what helps people who are severely bigoted change their mind, except that hanging out with people who they’re bigoted against generally helps. Other than that, nothing seems to really work, persuasive arguments really don’t. It’s sad, but true.

Again: What she was saying is 500x worse than ‘fuck you’. Someone says ‘fuck you’ to someone, oh man, ruined their day. Someone denying that trans women exist and talking about how encouraging a trans kid to express themselves is child abuse, and how they’ll never accept them—that leads to real, lasting damage and pain. Trans kids kill themselves. A lot. Because they face this kind of bigotry.

I don’t have to respect that opinion any more than I have to respect the opinion that gay men are mentally disturbed. It comes from the same anti-scientific place.

re: #594 HappyWarrior

Mayo Clinic

Short answer:

Most trans fats are made from oils through a food processing method called partial hydrogenation. By partially hydrogenating oils, they become easier to cook with and less likely to spoil than do naturally occurring oils. Research studies show that these partially hydrogenated trans fats can increase unhealthy LDL cholesterol and lower healthy high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol. This can increase your risk of cardiovascular disease.

re: #597 HappyWarrior

Interesting.

On November 7, 2013, the FDA issued a preliminary determination that trans fats are not “generally recognized as safe”, which was widely seen as a precursor to a reclassification of trans fats as a “food additive,” meaning they could not be used in foods without specific regulatory authorization. This would have the effect of virtually eliminating trans fats from the US food supply.[143][144] The ruling was formally enacted on June 16, 2015, requiring that within three years, all food prepared in the United States must not include trans fats, unless approved by the FDA

Without going into the chemistry, the good fats in your diet are polyunsaturated and better, monounsaturated that are those found in olive oil, avocadoes, etc. They help reduce bad cholesterol and aid in the body’s utilization of fat soluable nutrients.

A guy like Jeb really only appeals to the establishment and on the flip side you have Cruz who only really appeals to the base. Now there’s a head on a beer - that can hold the beer *in* the glass. Do you need a straw in order to drink it?

Heh didn’t need a straw no. Not a bad job pouring. I miss Dublin. As I told LH, it really is a friendly place. I made friends with the guide who gave the Easter Rising tour. He loved my tattoo(Irish brigade). Real interesting guy. You could tell he definitely was a radical.

I have been using the hilarious Jeb! when speaking of Jeb Bush. I have decided, no more.

I will forever, in the future, refer to him as Jeb Bush. He has to own that name.

Or just Bush. Even better.

re: #562 Obdicut (Now with 2% less brain)

She really wasn’t. She’s done this a bunch of times before, and she doesn’t listen at all to the other side, just spews venom at trans people and says it’s child abuse to respect the feelings of a trans kid.

We have trans members who read here, you know. She is saying it directly to people. Unless you think talking about how black people are dumb in the same room as them is okay ‘cuz you’re not directly addressing them.

I haven’t seen any even remote sign of even beginning to consider having a think about possibly at some point in the future deigning in the least bit to consider any other point of view, and a reminder that her point of view is bigoted and causes actual harm.

Thanks for the response Obdi. I appreciate it.

I don’t hang on here all the time, and I must say I haven’t followed Justanotherhuman’s comments on this particular subject.

I would have hoped she would be more open about it, seeing that she knows how people of color have been treated and how she herself has been treated in her life.

And I agree you don’t have to respect the opinion. I’m just old school on still respecting the person. It’s part of that thinking that I don’t have to like the message, but someone has the right to express it. Yes, there are lines that should not be crossed. And there are points to where the respect dies out because someone doesn’t want to learn and change.

I think that can be expressed in better ways. Some members have done just that.

The other thing to consider in debate, is there are most likely other LGF members that have trouble with the transgender issue. They probably choose not to even get into a discussion knowing how it would go. Did the FU help bring them to the discussion or make them decide they will never talk about it?

Justanotherhuman said it, and there is some merit in that. She didn’t hide her feelings. I see that as at least stating her opinion and that is also part of respect. At least she was willing to let it out. How many are hiding it which probably means there is not even any consideration? I think hiding it is far more dangerous.

I am talking more about the respect on the board. Respect for Charles and how things usually go around here. This thread caught me out.

Moving on. and dropping it. I hope justanother is considering it all too, as we all should. We all have some issues to work on.

For the record, since apparently men talking about how transgendered women should be treated with respect is just “mansplaining to the woman”, I am a female (born and gendered) and I believe that transgendered women (and in fact all trans folk) should be treated with respect. Their experience as women is going to be different than mine, but that doesn’t invalidate it. So they can’t bear children. So what? Bearing kids isn’t required for me to be a woman. We don’t claim that infertile women are not women.

This isn’t something people do on a lark, or because they want to for a weekend. It is something that people wrestle with a lot, because our culture has a lot of very defined views about how this should be and is very, very cruel to those who want to go against them to be true to themselves. Sometimes it takes people a long, long time of trying to fit what society thinks before they have the courage to embrace the change. I am not going to judge someone for that.

If nothing else, respecting their decision takes very little away from me and offers a huge amount of support to them. Even if you don’t necessarily agree, how do you justify calling it child abuse? Child abuse is what was done to Leelah, failing to get her the support she needed. I think everyone involved in this discussion would think her parents did wrong to go for conversion therapy if she was gay. Even simple things like refusing to use the correct pronouns for someone tell the people around you what your attitude is - and you never know who is struggling with that issue. I don’t believe in making someone’s life harder when it doesn’t impact me at all.

To our trans Lizards, I hope in particular that you know that I feel strongly about your right to the life that fits you and I will back you on that decision 100%. It’s not my decision or anyone else’s to make, and I believe you are all extraordinary people, to have the courage to embrace it.

So they can’t bear children. So what?

Even that is not necessarily true. I have seen abortion doctors work on their trans-inclusivity.

The latter, from what I’ve seen. Could go either way, I suppose.

Then we can consider that phrase to be “can’t necessarily have children.”

She’s not respecting other persons. You called out the ‘fuck you’, but not the hateful stuff she said about trans people.

I would think from my comments you’d be able to gather that I don’t think calling her out or saying FU is going to work.

And that is what all my comments have been about in this thread.

And yes, I do believe people of a certain age get some respect even when they are wrong. Call me old fashioned. It was the way I was taught and it is what I believe.

I know some people have some problem with Pope Francis and some of his viewpoints that are not agreed to by all. Do you walk up to him and say “Hey Pope, fuck you on the Catholic churches stand on birth control.”

What about the good that might come from his thinking on climate science and equality in workers wages? Is he 100% worthy of the fuck you, or 20% and you hope even that changes?

Show me anyone that is 100% correct on all issues. I thought we are humans.

By the way, I agree with all of you on what transgender people go through.

I hope that JAH keeps thinking about it, and maybe it opens up her mind a little more. But that is a big change for her obviously and nothing that happened above is going to help that change.

I hope you understand my viewpoint.

Then why do you think calling Sergey out is going to work?

You’ll notice it didn’t.

And yes, I do believe people of a certain age get some respect even when they are wrong. Call me old fashioned. It was the way I was taught and it is what I believe.

What does age have to do with anything? I’m supposed to respect Limbaugh because he’s old?

I know some people have some problem with Pope Francis and some of his viewpoints that are not agreed to by all. Do you walk up to him and say “Hey Pope, fuck you on the Catholic churches stand on birth control.”

You must have missed me saying that I wasn’t on board with saying ‘fuck you’, but if I did meet the pope, I would tell him that the Catholic church was completley wrong on birth control and it was causing mass human misery and that the Catholic church should be ashamed of their illogical, unscientific stance on it.

What about the good that might come from his thinking on climate science and equality in workers wages? Is he 100% worthy of the fuck you, or 20% and you hope even that changes?

Again, you’re pretending I said ‘fuck you’. Why? Why not deal with what I actually said?

Show me anyone that is 100% correct on all issues. I thought we are humans.

Nobody is asking for 100% correctness.

I hope that JAH keeps thinking about it, and maybe it opens up her mind a little more. But that is a big change for her obviously and nothing that happened above is going to help that change.

She isn’t thinking about it.

I hope you understand my viewpoint.

I think it’s naive, wrong, and coddles bigots, gaining us nothing. I think it is the viewpoint of the ‘liberal moderate’ that MLK talked about, who inhibit progress out of politeness and not wanting to make waves. You would rather call out Sergey for saying ‘fuck you’ than call out her for her bigotry. Bigotry is worse, and more impolite, than ‘fuck you’.

It’s funny, during the time period this conversation between you and I was taking place, my father made a lame joke about Jenner “or whatever he or she calls herself or himself these days”. I said “She, and herself.” My dad makes these unfortunate little jabs, and I call him out on them, and at other times I tell him that they make me embarrassed on his behalf and that in twenty years he’ll be viewed in the same way that the people who opposed black marriage will. He’s never said anything as hateful and weird as Justanoterhhuman did in this thread, but I have confronted him and called him out on his stance on gay rights and other stuff, and he has moderated over the years.

How do you expect views to change if they’re not challenged? The only argument you have is a tone argument, that somehow if the right conciliatory tone is struck, that will work. You have no reason to believe that.

re: #655 ObserverArt

I suspect, although I can’t say for sure because I am not one of them, that our trans Lizards found what she said in the thread today to be even more hurtful than someone saying “fuck you.”

She equated parents supporting their children - support I suspect most trans folk don’t see, but would give anything to have - with child abuse. She completely dismissed their lives, their decisions, as invalid. And this isn’t the first time the conversation has happened along these lines, and people have tried to educate.

There are times I disagree with her opinion but I don’t say anything because in the grand scheme of things, it’s not a big deal. There’s times where it’s important to speak up. This is one of them. Being a bigot should be uncomfortable.

Sierra Nevada Torpedo is one of the top 5 beers -by at least a single source, I guess;^) -in the country and what is in front of me right now- great stuff.
If you’re not a hops lover, it’s easy to discount what American craft brewers have been crankin’ out for the last decade or 3, but they are starting to be all kinds of other styles that American craft guys are really killin- including the old German faves- Victory’s Pils is a fantastic pilsner, as a single example.
Anyway- hello, everyone. Thanks for being the single best site for all many of info for the past several years. Prost.
