At Last, the GOP Clown Car Has Its Bozo: Birther Donald Trump

So many clowns in that little car
Politics • Views: 57,009

Every Clown Car needs its Bozo, and the GOP presidential campaign now has its very own — the world’s most famous Birther: Donald Trump.

And the Donald kicked it off with a series of incredibly fatuous statements. This is gonna be great, from the inadvertent comedy angle.

“I’m really rich,” Trump said after declaring his candidacy today.

Trump made many promises throughout his speech today: “I would do various things very quickly. I would repeal and replace the big lie, Obamacare.”

“I would build a great wall, and nobody builds walls better than me believe me, and I’ll build them very inexpensively. I will build a great, great wall on our southern border, and I will have Mexico pay for that wall.”

“Nobody would be tougher on ISIS than Donald Trump, nobody.”

“I will stop Iran from getting nuclear weapons,” said Trump, who also said that he wouldn’t allow Secretary Kerry to spearhead the negotiations.

“And I promise I will never be in a bicycle race,” said Trump, referring to Sec. Kerry’s biking accident in May.

[…]

He added, “I will be the greatest jobs president that God ever created.”

Trump is a xenophobic, science-illiterate, pandering fool whose fanboys are more of the same. He peddles anti-vax nonsense, checks which way the wind blows with the hair and decides to flip and flop on everything from health care reform to abortion.

And he’s benefited greatly from government largesse - whether its sweetheart deals to build golf courses for the rich and famous on public land in the Bronx (where the neighborhood could only wish to be caddies - or to get their park land back) to all manner of tax abatements and other deals that help him build real estate for the rich and famous.

And that doesn’t even touch on the way he’s built a personal fortune while his casino ventures have blown up spectacularly in bankruptcy after bankruptcy.

Even when the honeymoon is over, them taking him as seriously as they are now will only serve to make the minutely less crazy of the current line up somehow more palatable and reasonable by comparison. Not by much, but enough for further golden mean “both sides same thing but Dems are always worse” shit.

Freepers have reacted to Trump’s announcement:

With nearly 9 billion dollars, finance won’t be an issue

I only need a few dollars to buy all the popcorn I need.

If he really is serious about this (and that’s a big if), don’t underestimate him. Things are just crazy enough that he could emerge as another Perot.

His 9 billion makes him a serious contender

I wouldn’t vote for him if he gave me all 9 billion.

“With nearly 9 billion dollars, finance won’t be an issue”

Yeah, so he won’t be like the other “monkeys on a string” pandering to Wall Street and other big business interests. I’m glad he’s in because at the minimum, he’s going to force the rest of the GOP candidates to come out from under their various rocks and answer the tough questions.

If it gets down to Trump vs Hillary I’m voting for Trump.

In the announcement, he’s right on immigration, on jobs, on ObamaCare, and on the border fence.

I don’t know where he’s at on social issues.

He’s right on China, Trade, ObamaTrade, money manipulation, and the castration of America.

“I wouldn’t vote for him if he gave me all 9 billion.”

I sure would.

After voting Republican for decades, it would be the first time I got anything for it!

Did you watch the announcement? I suspect that Trump’s real serious. It was a heavy-hitting take-no-prisoners speech. He brought up most of the issues that bother us, and was convincing about how he’s the person to bring those issues around. And something unusual in Trump…he looked a bit nervous, but still confident.
I suspect that Trump’s bigger-than-life personality might be the Hail Mary pass the US needs to shake things up.

I’m not committed to any candidate anymore, but sure am glad Trump’s in it.

I’m not so sure we want a shy, self-effacing President.

The guy LOVES this country. He lived the American Dream. He has made his kids learn hard and work hard even with the perks they receive from being his kids.

We could do a whole lot worse. He’s not going to be beholden for money. That is, as he would say it, YUGE.

I’d vote for him over Hillary even with all his faults. He isn’t needy. Psychologically needy candidates are DANGEROUS. Obama, Newt, Clinton. Would President Trump do stupid things? Yes. Would he dare to actually overturn ObamaCare? Would he speak the truth to Radical Islam? Would he build a better USA economy? Yes too.

We’ve had [expletive deleted] Obama as our President for seven years. If we had to go Trump, it could still be a 200% improvement.

Trump/Fiorina 2016 An ass kicking team that cannot be bought

To be fair, most Freepers seem to not be buying into Trump’s bullshit. But a few are, and that’s scary.

EIGHT PAGES OF THE GUTENBERG BIBLE FOR SALE

In an email today, a JTS spokesman commented on the sale, “Over the past century, the Library, as part of its core mission, has implemented an acquisitions program to purchase general collections that include the kind of Hebrew and Judaic material that comport with its core mission. As a byproduct of those purchases, the Library has found itself in possession of a number of important non-Hebrew incunabula, Latin Christian works which have a significant and intrinsic value but do not contribute to the Library’s core mission. Because scholars rarely turn to JTS for these non-Hebrew materials, they have lay dormant on library shelves for the 90 years they have been in our collection. It has become clear that these volumes would better serve as scholarly resources in other collections and in keeping with best practices among academic libraries, and after due consideration, The Library of The Jewish Theological Seminary has chosen to deaccession these important non-Hebrew incunabula.”

My worry isn’t he’d get anywhere near the presidency. He’s too inept for the full campaign. My worry is how much his involvement will instigate further clown car shit getting normalized because insipid golden mean bullshit coverage of this shitshow. See CNN’s slobbering adoration.

Even when the honeymoon is over, them taking him as seriously as they are now will only serve to make the minutely less crazy of the current line up somehow more palatable and reasonable by comparison. Not by much, but enough for further golden mean “both sides same thing but Dems are always worse” shit.

Anything that further exposes the GOP complete turn to the insane works for me. Maybe then we can have a functioning government and a sane opposition again.

Hayes cut him off early knowing it was going to go nowhere fast.

Imagined party of imagined threats and imagined enemies and imagined policies with imagined outcomes. The same imagined policies they’ve been espousing for decades. They don’t even have any new imagined policies.

What I found amusing was Ted Cruz’s response when he was asked how he’d win the WH. He basically said Reagan Democrats and that just amused me because the absolute youngest Reagan Democrat and I apologize to you Gen Xers but that absolute youngest Reagan Democrat turns 50 next year. Ted himself was never old enough to vote for Reagan. Hell he just barely made the cut to vote for H.W Bush. These guys just think they can talk about Reagan and that’s the ticket to win. And it just isn’t. I am not a fan at all of REagan historically but Reagan wasn’t nearly as cynical as these guys are.

Not possible in a case of rape. The pregnancy was not chosen. She cannot decide to be old enough to bear a child. She did it, but to use her to encourage others to choose similarly is irresponsible.

Okay, there’s this:

Currently, Ashley does not receive support from the State of Indiana. Unfortunately, the state of Indiana is one of 31 states that has no law protecting a child conceived through rape from his biological father.

If Ashley files for any kind of government assistance, the state must go after Aiden’s biological father for repayment. In return, he can demand visitation rights. We are encouraging legislators to pass legislation protecting these children and their mothers from being victimized once again by terminating any rights that father might have. But until Indiana changes its law regarding children conceived in rape, Ashley’s parents must bear the financial burden of caring for Aiden.

Fuck you Bush, My mom raised me and my 2 sisters by herself when my dad left when I was 5, I’m 63 now and my sisters and myself have done pretty good in life thanks to our mom.

My father died when I was seven. Those Captains of American Industry, the Job Creators at US Steel, where my father had worked for 30 years, declared that my mother was ineligible for a widow’s pension as my father died before he retired.

We survived with the aid of social security.

My mother later found out about a class action suit against USX, the successor to US Steel and received a small settlement, but without SS, we would have lost our house and home.

So yeah, fuck you, Bush. Of course it’s better if a kid is raised in an intact family, but not everyone can be like GWB and Barbara…

Abbott signed House Bill 483 into law last Friday, stating, “Today I signed HB 483 to provide a secure facility for the State of Texas, state agencies and Texas citizens to store gold bullion and other precious metals. With the passage of this bill, the Texas Bullion Depository will become the first state-level facility of its kind in the nation, increasing the security and stability of our gold reserves and keeping taxpayer funds from leaving Texas to pay for fees to store gold in facilities outside our state.”

Under the terms of the bill, written by Rep. Giovanni Capriglione (R-Tarrant County), the gold will be held in state run depository beyond the reach of the federal government and other any “quasi-governmental authority” should they attempt to access or “confiscate” it.

Section A2116.023 of the bill states: “Purported confiscation, requisition, seizure, or other attempt to control the ownership … is void and of no force or effect.”

The bill also states “The depository in the case of receiving notice of a purported confiscation, requisition, seizure, or other attempt to control the ownership, disposition, or proceeds of a withdrawal, transfer, liquidation, or settlement of a depository account … may not
recognize the governmental or quasi-governmental authority, financial institution, or other person acting as the lawful successor of the registered holder of a depository account in question.”

I didn’t like how Sanders made his point, since it was dismissive. How hard can it be to state forthrightly that racism remains a pressing problem to address and that plutocracy in the US is also a pressing problem to address?

Kansas, Nevada, Nebraska… Republicans are raising taxes in the same way they would have crucified Democrats if they wanted to do the same thing. Republicans are providing evidence that cutting taxes does not equal growth in the tax base. Sad.

Why not start laying off tax-leaches (employees) instead?

When I am running short of funds (like know, after paying cash for a new car), I cut back spending and work harder. (I am commission-based). I would never think of asking others to bail me out.

CUT THE FRICKIN’ BUDGET, SAM! You act like a Democrat.

“Republicans are providing evidence that cutting taxes does not equal growth in the tax base.”

It is hard to prove that the Laffer Curve works or does not work on a micro economic unit such as a single state. The article also does not mention efforts at controlling spending, etc. that are necessary for the Laffer curve to work.

I never supported him for Governor. However I’m more disappointed in the legislature. They were the ones that kept his liberalism in check. He was doing a decent job without having leftist bills put on his desk by a good legislature. Until now.

… the new depository will not just be a well-guarded warehouse for that bullion. The law Abbott signed calls for the creation of an electronic payments system that will allow gold, silver, platinum, palladium, and rhodium depositors to write checks against their accounts, making the depository into a bank - one that will create a metal-backed money supply intended to challenge the paper currency issued by the Federal Reserve - or “Yankee dollars” as one of the law’s top supporters calls them. And in case the Fed or Obama wants to confiscate Texas’s gold, nice try Fed and Obama! In keeping with this suspicion of the Fed and Washington, the new law also explicitly declares that no “governmental or quasi-governmental authority other than an authority of [Texas]” will be allowed to confiscate or freeze an account inside the depository. Gold that’s entrusted to Texas will stay in Texas.

Abbot’s statement: “The law will repatriate $1 billion of gold bullion from the Federal Reserve in New York to Texas.”

The problem: “Texas has no gold bars in the Federal Reserve’s New York vault. And what the state has is not worth a billion dollars. Instead some 4,200 gold bars bought in 2011 by the University of Texas’s endowment fund (the second largest in the country after Harvard’s) are stored in the basement vault of HSBC’s headquarters at 450 5th Avenue in New York City, just south of the New York Public Library. For the last four years, the endowment has paid an estimated $1 million per year to store their gold there. (If it had been at the New York Fed the cost would have totaled about $15,400 over that period). And the new depository law does not require the university’s endowment fund to relocate the gold to Texas.”

IMO there is no practical difference between these two categories as long as the less fanatical continue to enable the more fanatical.

This pattern applies to just about every other issue where GOP “moderates in the mist” allegedly exist in any meaningful way.

The main problem is the fanatics are the ones in power and the others have to go along to get any kind of their Fiscal concerns met, I have seen this play out on many diff issues over the years. I don’t like it but it happens. There are just to many fanatical republicans voting for idiots now of days.

I read Sanders as saying “overcame racism [this one time] and elected…”. Not “forever”. This may be just my bias speaking of course.

There are ways to parse Sanders’ statement that may make it somewhat less objectionable. That simply isn’t good enough for prime time.

He needs to do much better on identity issues, since they are just as important in US politics as economic issues.

I’m starting to get irritated with Sanders because the way he pushes economic issues at the expense of other issues will be counter-productive.

The ruling liberal fundamentalists diligently destroy the family as a social structure that provides the connection between generations and transfer the conservative traditional norms, preserving non-market, difficult to control the connections between people and prevents them from forming an ideal consumer commodity fetishes. For this are created and funded crazy “women’s departments of sciences” in the universities. For this purpose, a monstrous system “juvenile justice”. You have the paper/board version? That’s cool. I’m liking it but as with the thicker games the learning curve is a little high. I know exactly want a unit or group of forces to do but planning and understanding the AI is a little vexing. It’s takes a surprising amount of processor power to run the AI engine. The enemy is smart. And some of the opposition forces are brilliant, some make dumb mistakes. With the scenario creator/editor You can re create or invent just about any air or naval battle real or imagined circa 1950 to 2020. Global.

Steam has it cheap, original retail was $199!

This is a great review.

I still love the WWE Battle Royal idea. Put all the candidates in a cage and let them duke it out. Whoever comes out on top gets the nom.

How about a slight revision? Have them each drink a double-dose of Syrup of Ipecac, put them all in a sealed room and then let them puke it out. Last man standing gets to clean up the mess.

That will make the event what these clowns are all about, a laugh.

Even the ones who aren’t Catholic.

Those amuse me the most. It’s like they expect the Pope to just echo their values. I’ve said it already but pontiffs even conservative ones like this pope’s predecessor spoke out against income inequality and capitalism’s faults. The difference though is A) Francis I think is more sincere(look at how the man lives) and B) he talks about this far more than the so-con issues that conservative Christians want to hear. They’d much rather Francis denounce same sex marriage than income inequality and Francis while I’d be shocked if he ever came around on SSM definitely does see income inequality as a much bigger problem in the world than gay people marrying.

These are very good points. If Sanders is going to go anywhere near this minefield on the campaign trail, more power to him, if he can actually talk about the issues and do more good than harm. This is certainly difficult, and may actually be impossible.

It really is hard to do since socialist is such a bad word in the American political lexicon.

Leo XIII, Rerum Novarum.

His encyclicals changed the Church’s relations with temporal authorities, and, in the 1891 encyclical Rerum novarum, for the first time addressed social inequality and social justice issues with Papal authority, focusing on the rights and duties of capital and labour. He was greatly influenced by Wilhelm Emmanuel von Ketteler, a German bishop who openly propagated siding with the suffering working classes in his book Die Arbeiterfrage und das Christentum. Since Leo XIII, Papal teachings have expanded on the rights and obligations of workers and the limitations of private property: Pope Pius XI Quadragesimo anno, the Social teachings of Pope Pius XII on a huge range of social issues, John XXIII Mater et magistra in 1961, Pope Paul VI, the encyclical Populorum progressio on world development issues, and Pope John Paul II, Centesimus annus, commemorating the 100th anniversary of Rerum novarum. Leo XIII had argued that both capitalism and communism are flawed. Rerum novarum introduced the idea of subsidiarity, the principle that political and social decisions should be taken at a local level, if possible, rather than by a central authority, into Catholic social thought. A list of all of Leo’s encyclicals can be found in the List of Encyclicals of Pope Leo XIII.

What’s amusing to me regarding the hatred of the present pope by the wingnuts is that popes have been criticizing income equality and capitialistic excesses for years now. Hell I think they were before the Russian revolution even. Point though is Francis is A) I think actually sincere with his criticism as he lives a pretty austere lifestyle and B) he finds poverty and inequality much more offensive than gay people and abortion.

Yes, the Church has addressed poverty and capitalism starting in 1891 with Pope Leo’s encyclical Rerum Norarum:

Historically, various socialist factions have hated each other even more than they were hated by the capitalist enemies.

When a wingnut says “socialist”, he means “Stalinist commie GULAG 1000000000 dead”. Even though Sanders would have been shot in Stalin’s times as a Menshevik/Trotskyist/fascist.

It really is hard to do since socialist is such a bad word in the American political lexicon.

In the presidential election of 1912, the socialist candidate Eugene V. Debs got 6% of the popular vote from prison, an all time high for the Socialist Party of America.

The 16th amendment (income tax) and 17th amendment (direct election of senators) both passed in 1913.

I do not think this was merely a coincidence. Nor is it a coincidence that the 16th and 17th amendments are both targets of wingnut repeal fantasies.

I think part of the reason why Trotsky gets romanticized is actually much the same that we in America have with Jack Kennedy and LBJ. People think “Oh what could have been?” But yeah Trotsky wasn’t much better. The only real positive difference I can think of with Trosky is that Trotsky wouldn’t have bought Hitler as a potential ally.
