Just a Wheelbarrow Full of Orangutans

More fun than a GOP clown car

I’m in a coding frenzy today, working on the reboot of the LGF front page; been trying out ideas for months now, and I think I’ve finally got something I like. So here are some orangutans who seem pretty well-adjusted, and a thread that is open, while I wrestle with the design.

I like it much better without the excerpts. I admit the excerpts drive me mad because they frequently cut off mid-sentence and that is a pet peeve.

Though you have to admit, Trump adds fun to the GOP Clown Car which it had been sorely lacking. I can hardly wait for him to tell Ted Cruz in a debate that he is a Canadian and can’t run for President. Now if only Sarah would run …

Looks great. The only nitpick is again about the chronological order… It just takes time to compare the dates. If the boxes also had small sequential numbers, with the main one always being 1, chronologically earlier ones 2, 3 and so on, that would help to orient oneself…

The numbers could be a part of the photos, for example.

Brings back memories. When I was a little kid in Enid,OK, circa 1957-58, there was a Saturday morning show called the Tiny Tots Show. Dunno how it came to be except my mom was a bit of a stage parent, but I was a prop kid on that show for a year or so. One of my jobs was to play with toys the show was advertising. I have distinct memories of misery trying to look like I was having fun with the most boring toy ever invented, the Barrel of Monkeys.

After further review, these are my thoughts (hope you don’t mind):

- Pics should be a standard Height= and Width= across all of the posts, except for the most current.

- The Pages area on the right is a too wide. I would take off 1/2”.

- The text is a quite large in the main post. Bigger is good, but that is really, really big.

- I like the first X characters of a post content displaying near the picture.

- The first one we saw was more eye appealing, but the text there was too big, too.

- The last one is too asymmetrical for my eyes. It looks cluttered and kind of scattered.

I didn’t log out and look at it. I wonder what it looks like with all the ads.

Donald Trump Hired Paid Actors To Attend Presidential Launch Event

The gentleman who posted the pic is a paid actor who regularly posts photos from his gigs on social media. This seemed like all the others from his gigs that he posts. Sure. It seemed fishy. But, but I figured that perhaps it was just a coincidence? Paid actors can support presidential candidates too. No big. I persisted in my incredulity at the thought that Trump might actually pay actors to attend his campaign launch.

Then I discovered the other person pictured in the photo is also a paid actress. Hmmm. That got me thinking a bit. So, I did some digging. Here’s what I discovered…

According to sources: some actors were hired to attend and participate in the event; and, a company called Extra Mile NYC connected Trump’s campaign/event organizers with the paid actors.

Some thoughts:

The top bar looks a bit too spartan to me. E.g., the title “little green footballs” could run all the way across, rather than be bunched up in the left hand corner. Or perhaps other graphics could fill in the space.

Also, have you thought of adding a wider margin at the top, between the top bar and the articles? Perhaps some navigation functionality could be added there.

Meanwhile, down in Carolina:

TEACHER RESIGNS AFTER READING STUDENTS BOOK ABOUT GAY COUPLE

After a third-grader tearfully recounted how another boy had called him “gay” during gym class, teacher Omar Currie chose to raise the issue during story time by reading his students a fable about a prince who falls in love with another prince, ending with a happily-ever-after royal wedding.

That decision in April ignited a public outcry from some parents in the rural hamlet of Efland, North Carolina, resulting in Currie’s resignation this week from a job he loved. The assistant principal who loaned Currie her copy of “King & King” has also resigned, and outraged parents are pressuring administrators at the Orange County Schools to ban the book.

[…]

But… but… I thought it’s the Christians who are being persecuted by Big Gay??

91 freetoken  Jun 16, 2015 5:00:16pm
But at the committee meetings to discuss Currie’s use of the book, some parents whose children were not in his class made their attacks personal, telling him he would die young and spend eternity in hell. He also began receiving hate-filled letters and emails, including one copied to other teachers at the school, described homosexuality as a “birth defect” while accusing Currie of trying to “indoctrinate” children through “psycho-emotional rape.”

Oh, how I’d love to bring up this example at the next GOP “debate” and see the candidates squirm.

The House Appropriations Labor-HHS-Education Subcommittee’s new budget proposal would zero out funds for Title X, the only federal program devoted to providing low-income people with family planning services, birth control, well-woman visits, cancer screenings, screening for sexually transmitted infections, and other preventive services.

Donald Trump Hired Paid Actors To Attend Presidential Launch Event

Hmmm. Maybe he can pay people to vote for him.

He says he is worth 9 billion or so.

Last election had a total of 126,849,296 voters.

That comes out to $70.95 per vote if he spends the full 9 billion.

So, say he pays 68 million folks a $100 each, he could buy the vote and still have 2.8 billion left!

Obama won the last election with 65,915,796 votes. 68 million would probably be enough to get him in.

This Melissa Harris-Perry interview with Rachel Dolezal is fucked beyond belief.

101 freetoken  Jun 16, 2015 5:23:54pm

re: #100 goddamnedfrank

Speaking of Dolezal, this paragraph struck me at the recent HuffPo piece on her parents:

Ruthanne and Larry Dolezal, both residents of Troy, Montana, have been advocates for social justice in their own way. They practice Young Earth Creationism, a fundamentalist branch of Christianity that takes the Bible’s stories about the beginning of the world quite literally. Young Earth Creationists believe that God created the world in six consecutive 24-hour days, that humans and dinosaurs once walked together and that the Earth is only about 6,000 years old. To Young Earth Creationists, the great flood described in the Bible isn’t just poetry — it’s historical fact.

102 freetoken  Jun 16, 2015 5:28:29pm

Speaking of creationists, look who popped back up on the radar, one Harun Yahya, in a rather sad story about the murder of a secularist in Pakistan:

What Ananta Das was best known for, and perhaps the reason fundamentalist Muslims picked up his scent in the first place, was a magazine, which his organization put together and published, called “Jukti”, which translates to “Reason”. The first issue of Jukti was published in 2007 and featured, translated to Bengali of course, a chapter titled “What is a Freethinker?” from the well known book “Losing Faith in Faith: From Preacher to Atheist” written by the evangelical preacher turned atheist, Dan Barker. It was a sign of things to come, and over the years, Jukti featured many such thought provoking writings, many of which were translated from English with permission, such as an interview with Dr. Sean B. Carrol, which appeared in the 2009 issue of Discovery, and a piece titled “Turtles All the Way Down: The Atlas of Creation” written by Matt Cartmill, which is a review of the book “Atlas of Creation” by Harun Yahya, to name a few. Harun Yahya, a Turkish Islamic Creationist author, is popular with the “Islamic Foundation”, the largest Islamic Organization in Bangladesh, which is involved in the publication of this and many other books written by him, and their distribution to all levels of the education system throughout Bangladesh. Mr. Das, who was the editor of Jukti, also wrote an article whose Bangla title translates to “Harun Yahya: All That Glitters is Not gold”, in which he exposed the holes in the creationist’s arguments. In addition, many articles in Jukti provided critical evaluations of the views of other prominent promoters of Islam, such as the extremely popular Indian cleric, Zakir Naik, who was recently awarded by King Faisal of Saudi Arabia for his “services to Islam”. Other articles featured in Jukti leave no room for doubt about Mr. Das’s keen enthusiasm for science, particularly the Darwinian theory of evolution, which is in stark contrast to the creationism that Islam, and many other religions teach. Needless to say, such articles proved to be highly controversial in our country, where an overwhelming majority follows the Sunni sect of Islam. Jukti and the articles it featured turned out to be highly popular among Bangladeshis nonetheless, not just in the published form, but over the country’s blogosphere as well.

Charles,

I like the new front page design. Nice ‘n’ clean. Though being a fairly long-time reader, it’ll take some getting used to when it’s finally rolled out. Maybe include a button that reverts the new front page to the old one?

I remember you commenting days earlier that the redesign is necessary to keep up on those Google rankings, I’ve thought about that as I’ve perused the web recently. And by golly, that’s just the way the stone tumbles, the web is largely moving on from list formats and coalescing into, uh, something else besides lists? Speech bubbles? I’m not a programmer, so I’m talking out of my ass here.

I also noticed in the new beta version, wrenchwench’s LGF User Guide is missing from the upper right.

I don’t think anyone cares if they whine. Media companies don’t want to alienate viewers and lose ad dollars.

If picking on young earth creationists would cause (or is assumed to cause) media to alienate viewers and lose ad dollars, that pretty much amounts to the media caring about YEC whining.

Her website: alicedreger.com

She’s a friend of mine and some lizards got to know her very well a little while back when she live-tweeted an abstinence-only sex ed class at her son’s school. (It was hilarious, although rather sad and infuriating that adults were teaching kids that nonsense in a public school.)

Going back to that era, I recall a piece I heard (probably on NPR) comparing news coverage (especially political campaign coverage) from the 50-60’s era to today. Back then on the average news story, the typical “sound bite” was actually a minute or so long, compared to something like 10 seconds today.

It irks me to no end that people think that coherent strategies to complex problems will fit on a bumper sticker (think “Drill Baby Drill”). American Politics has become “Short Attention Span Theater”.
