Nine shot, unspecified number of fatalities
US News • Views: 41,376

Tonight we’re getting word of a horrific mass shooting at a historic black church in Charleston, South Carolina. The suspect is a 21-year old white male. There are not many verified details yet, so here’s an overnight thread to keep up on new information as it becomes available.

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — Police are searching for a 21 year old white man who allegedly opened fire Wednesday evening on parishioners at the historic Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, South Carolina. The Post and Courier is reporting nine shooting victims with multiple fatalities.

The pastor of the church was inside for a service at the time of the shooting. But it was unclear if the shooting took place inside the church.

Police are saying on Twitter that they’re looking for an approximately 21-year-old white male.

35 Kragar  Jun 17, 2015 9:41:34pm

By bringing up “mental issues”, CNN is implying there are other perfectly good reasons why a white man could walk into a church and gun down 9 black people, they’re just choosing not to talk about them.

Real news organizations want a source and at least one, preferably two, confirmation sources.

So be calm. Wrong info is much worse than slow-to-be-confirmed-info.

Craptastic journalism is publishing the wrong shooter’s name, or announcing a man’s death when he’s undergoing surgery.

So, really, pipe down.

Well, to be fair a person could be both mentally ill and a racist at the same time. But its also true that going right in with the issue of racism would leave CNN in a bad place in the unlikely event it turns out this wasn’t about racism. They’d then be accused of jumping to conclusions, or even of “lying to fit a liberal agenda”. Heck, they’d likely get those accusations even if they were proven right, just fewer of them.

From CNN’s perspective its smart to just avoid “that O-Word” for now.

Damn. Friends of mine work for the paper there. This is going to be a long & ugly night for them. Every time they write about gun violence, the screeching RWNJs descend on the comment threads there with the usual bullshit.

This one is really going to bring them out in their self-justifying hordes. They are constitutionally incapable of admitting that a white man with a gun can do any wrong, particularly if the victims are black.

Can someone please get to work on those goddam Star Trek personal force fields? Or reactive bulletproof clothing? Anything to deny these pencildicks their feeling of power that they get from pumping slugs into helpless people and laughing in malefic glee.

Yemen is number two in guns per capita.

However, they are also in a state of major civil war.

Norway, Sweden, and Finland are 3, 4, and 5 (not in that order though).

And the last mass shooting in those three nations was the Right-Wing Terror attack on Utoya.

We have a major cultural problem here. Not to mention, you can get AR-15s in Nordic Nations. I would actually be quite comfortable with Nordic Style gun laws.

I’m sure that Wayne LaPierre is working on the NRA’s response right now.

I am sure he’s ready to blame a movie that came out when the shooter was a child just like he did with Ryan Lanza who as far as I know there was no evidence he had seen Natural Born Killers or American Psycho.

Interesting. Had no idea there were so many guns in the Nordic nations. They are however IIRC a lot more spread out population wise than we are. I’d actually be curious about Germany and the UK given they are similiar to us in that they have large population centers i.e. London but also some rural areas too.

They should be angry! Really angry, because so many White Americans simply don’t give a damn.

This is ridiculous. To use a Hunger Games analogy, most people like me are living like the airheads at the Capital.

The big difference between me and them was that, because I was born with Autism, I got treated worse by others. So, I left the nice comfortable zone. I can thank Asperger’s for opening my mind.

Yes, my past experiences have made me harsh, and quite bitter, but if not for my Autism separating me from others, I might be like so many others.

I was actually able to convince the Republican Friend in DC that the Nordic Model would be best. There are some conservative ideas that have worked in their, such as lower corporate taxes, and also the facts that companies have unions along with workers unions.

It’s more difference in level of government between her and me.

I tend to be a Federalist, and believe the states should have some powers taken away. Though, other powers would be given back to the states.

Right, reasonable to me. I think a lot depends on what kind of things. I used to be more of a stateser on education but I’ve come to realize a couple things A) America’s high school kids are all competing for acceptance at the same universities and B) Some school boards are absolutely bonkers.

I’m sure that South Carolina flying a Confederate Swastika over it’s Statehouse for decades had nothing to do with white privilege and its brutal treatment of its sub-human Negroid population. Or how some of its paler citizens might be upset about “equal protection under the law” being extended to Those People.

Imagine what the Supreme Court ruling (Tomorrow? Friday at 6:15 PM?) on gay marriage will engender.

In any case, adios, muchachos, from beautiful Austin, where we got another two inches of rain from the backside of TS Bill this PM (in 45 minutes!) at rush hour. The streets were a fucking mess.

In terms of powers to the states, I would be willing to let US sttes choose their form of Democratic government, if, for example, they wanted to go more towards a parliamentary system (which, considering the history of Illinois Governors, might be a good thing).

Another, would be while I would be fine with the US having English as the national language in legislation, the states would be able to adopt second or more languages because cultural connections and historical reasons. Heck, even allow the states to join the various international language organizations like La Francophonie (Louisiana, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine), or Organization of Ibero-American States (too many states have a history with Spain or Mexico to count, not to mention Puerto Rico).

This is what pisses me off about this whole thing.

Right now, it shouldn’t be about race, class, religion or any other damned thing except 9 dead people and their families who are facing a tragedy.
We have real human beings in need right now, who the fuck cares what they look like?

WE MUST BE BETTER THAN THIS.

Realize this people, this is what “America” looks like on the international stage now. When other cultures think of America, they think of gun violence. Is that really the image you want for this country.

It’s not about the face of the shooter, it’s not about the race of the victims, it’s not about mental illness or religious propaganda or gun control laws, it’s about a culture that’s gotten so violent and twisted that not only are these shootings becoming commonplace but it’s also becoming commonplace to bring religious and racial prejudices into it to the point where we can now flawlessly predict any groups reaction to a shooting based on the circumstances.

Before next week is over, thanks to the media, the victims will have been buried twice.

So they can speculate about the mental condition of someone who hasn’t been identified yet, but not about a motive? What a crock.

Sometimes the movies get it. My mistrust of populism is based on the fact I don’t like anger being an ideology. I do understand why there is hesistion about trade deals though especially when they’re representing areas that have seen what happens when outsourcing happens and there’s really not much in place to replace it. When I took economics some years ago, I recall hearing about economist and I think eh actually was one of Obama’s advisers that suggested that before outsourcing happens which is inevitable these days that the people employed by the outsourced industry be trained in a new field. One of the problems is the GOP year after year gives the DOD boatloads of money they don’t NEED (and don’t dare think of cutting it), much of which ends up in the hands of defense contracts and other private enterprise that works on government contracts.

How awful. And I know seven other families are going through this same sorrow right now.

I haven’t (thankfully) had to deal with someone I know being murdered, but the phone call to let you know of a sudden, unexpected death is one of the shittiest, most horrible feelings I know.

A combination of having the wind knocked out of you and a desperate grasping that this isn’t reality.

Watching a Cultural Center of the US drown, and the Gulf Coast blasted to Rubble was insane.

More incredible was the following days as foreign nations started giving aid and dispatching rescuers to the US. That was a first for me. Probably the first for most of US too.

I am glad to hear that. I love their music. I first heard Gillian on the Where Brother Where Art Thou soundtrack. I had since forgotten about her but my Dad got form the library Dave’s solo album and Gillian’s latest and I just fell in love. I think it’s because you realize how sudden death can be..And you’re thinking about it. I remember another time and this was the first time a contemporary of mine passed how a kid from the neighbrhood brought up that so and so died and I immediately went “Holy shit, I knew so and so.” I didn’t know him well but there weren’t many days our sophomore through senior year that I thought about him buried across from the high school he would have graduated from and how we all were living. It’s hard to believe that he was only a year older than my brother and his friends are now.

I don’t know if Heaven exists but I do like to think it does and I certainly did then since I knew how much she missed him.

Anyone routinely on their computer way past sundown may find this of interest: SunsetScreen v1.21

SunsetScreen is a free app for Windows which helps take the glare off your your screen in the evening. Scientific research has shown that melatonin - the chemical the brain makes late in the day - is reduced when exposed to blue light. By tempering this blue light, it becomes easier to wind down properly at night, and thus have a more restful sleep.

Whether you’re a morning lark or night owl, SunsetScreen allows you to set the time of the sunset and sunrise, so you can have full control over your sleep cycle.

A combination of having the wind knocked out of you and a desperate grasping that this isn’t reality.

I mentioned the other day that a student of mine here died last week of cancer. She had been dealing with it for two years, and her health went into a sharp decline beginning around March. Osteosarcoma is brutal, and the survival rate is not so good, so in the back of my mind I was preparing myself for That Day.

Ever the optimist, I hope that by some miracle, she’d pull through. When she sent out a message to her friends May 25 that all communication would be through her husband or brother, I knew Carla was preparing for That Day.

She was in horrible, constant pain.

On June 8, she was weak, but still hanging on. I was reluctant to check again a couple of days later — I think because deep down inside I knew she was already gone. Finally, I did, and it turned out I was right.

We used to exchange IMs several times a week. I have to fight the urge to send her one now. I can’t believe she’s gone.

Photos released of man wanted for Bible study shooting that killed 9 at Charleston church Posted 6:27 am, June 18, 2015

Excerpt:

Historic significance

Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church has been a presence in Charleston since 1816 when African-American members of Charleston’s Methodist Episcopal Church formed their own congregation after a dispute over burial grounds.

It was burned to the ground at one point, but rebuilt. Over and over throughout its history, it overcame obstacle after obstacle – destroyed by an earthquake, banned by the state. But its church members persevered, making it the largest African-American church in terms of seating space in Charleston today.

Every Wednesday evening, the church holds a Bible study in its basement.

As for Victim-Blaming strategies…

The city, as several reverends pointed out, is known as the “Holy City” for its tolerant attitude toward different denominations.

It was led by Rev. Clementa Pinckney, who was also a state senator. His death was reported by affiliate WCSC, who confirmed it through Elder James Johnson, the president of the Tri-County chapter of the civil rights organization, the National Action Network.

Recently, Pinckney backed a bill to make body cameras mandatory for all police officers in South Carolina. The legislation was in response to the death of Walter Scott, an unarmed black man killed by a police officer earlier this year.

“Body cameras help to record what happens. It may not be the golden ticket, the golden egg, the end-all-fix-all, but it helps to paint a picture of what happens during a police stop,” Pinckney said in April.

Populism is a poor way of making decisions. It is knee-jerk, and often results in contradictory policies that make no sense.

Per capita, Norway’s military is 50% larger than ours.

There needs to be an overall at the DOD. We are doing something incredibly wrong somewhere. We should be more efficient with our spending.

If the military in the US was about defence I’d agree. But the military in the US is a business so its priority is maximizing the profits of the corporations involved. In that it is quite efficient.

One of the problems is the GOP year after year gives the DOD boatloads of money they don’t NEED (and don’t dare think of cutting it), much of which ends up in the hands of defense contracts and other private enterprise that works on government contracts.

I believe there was a quote I saw awhile back from a high ranking military official saying basically: “We have more money than we know what to do with.”

My favourite quote about that comes from other nation’s militaries.

Recently, Pinckney backed a bill to make body cameras mandatory for all police officers in South Carolina.

Hmm. I’ll speculate that the shooter may have a close friend or relative who is a racist LEO.

re: #199 klys (maker of Silmarils)

I haven’t (thankfully) had to deal with someone I know being murdered, but the phone call to let you know of a sudden, unexpected death is one of the shittiest, most horrible feelings I know.

A combination of having the wind knocked out of you and a desperate grasping that this isn’t reality.

Doing it isn’t easy either.

About a decade ago I was hanging out on a writer’s forum. One of the people there was one of the loveliest women I’ve ever known.

One day I receive a message in my private messages, allegedly from the woman’s partner. She said my friend had passed away from a heart attack.

I spent the day trying to get in touch. Finally I talked to the partner on the phone. The heartbreak in her voice left me in no doubt as to the truth of the message she sent.

I hung up, had a good cry and let the rest of the forum know what had happened. Hardest thing I’ve ever done.

I don’t hang at that forum any more but I go back every anniversary of my friend’s death and leave a message saying how much I still miss my friend.

Yeah. We’re not Roman, rather part of the Anglican communion, but this still all hits close to home form me as Senior Warden of our parish. We’re in the process of declaring ourselves to be a “Welcoming and Affirming” church which would make explicit our support for LGBT Christians in a rather conservative religious environment.

My other current project is to get votive candles set up next to our icon of Mother Mary. I look forward to lighting one in prayer for all of us trying to follow the Way.

It’s going to be … interesting. We will lose some members, though not as many as even 5 years ago. We will gain others, especially from those in other liturgical traditions (Roman Catholic, Lutheran, etc) The various very fundamentalist churches up the road already cluck their tongues at us a bit but this may well be a bit to much of a smack in their faces. We’ll see. The vestry is totally behind it though so I’m happy to be making our belief in an inclusive Lord who loves all of God’s children more widely known.
