Terrorists have dark skin, wear headscarves and carry a Koran. How dare you!!!

Repost from below:

America has already gorged itself on strange fruit, and we should eat it no more.

Warning: Disturbing images in this video. I think it is good to remember but it is very sad as well.

For those who want to turn to face the sun instead, Will The Circle Be Unbroken?

Dr Bernice Johnson Reagon certainly thinks it will.

A dreary and rainy morning here in Philly just somehow seems appropriate.

4 Wendell Zurkowitz (slave to the waffle light)  Jun 18, 2015 5:48:45am

There might be some mental illness involved in the overall picture, but this was no random act: it was carefully chosen, planned and carried out.

And it was not intended as an attack on Christians as such, it was an attack on politically active blacks, a threat and a warning. Which fits the description of terrorism.

White domestic terrorism, the sort of stuff that sends the Right WIng into hissy fits whenever it is mentioned.

Repost: Charleston Mayor, Police Chief Will Hold News Conference

The City of Charleston Mayor, Joseph P. Riley, Jr., and Police Chief Gregory Mullen will hold a press conference at the Charleston Maritime Center at 7:00 A.M. on Thursday, June 18th. Charleston County Coroner, Rae Wooten, will release the names of the victims after the families are notified.

Bolding mine.

If only the congregation bought their guns with them to church, this would have never happened.

/snark

BTW, I work in a predominantly Black church. They are all good people there. As an aside, they had me install one of those crappy cheap DVR security systems from a warehouse club. They are all but useless. I’m pretty impressed with the cam shots from this incident. When it comes to security video, you need the best resolution you can get. In the few cases I’ve had to get video for an incident, it’s all a grainy useless 240p (actual, not upconverted) mess.

One thing that does bear saying is that if this had been a police shooting, the photographers’ equipment would not have survived and he might have gotten some bruises.

re: #12 Rev_Arthur_Icantbreatheing

What a tragic loss of life. Reminds me of the bombing of the church in Birmingham in the 60s.

Actually, that bombing was done by a more sophisticated and dangerous terrorist. Building a viable bomb is a good bit harder than shooting up a room with a pistol.

Note also that the killer used a pistol. So if we talk about gun control, lets keep it to handguns and leave rifles out of it.

But Darth, what should he have done? The day after a mass murder is not the time for a political rally, and how welcome would Jeb have been at the scene? It’s not like the Bush brand stands high with black people.

The key word here is “definitively”. People are already speculating like mad, and that is not what is needed.

41 Targetpractice  Jun 18, 2015 6:27:56am

So a shooting by a Muslim or a swarthy looking fellow is “domestic terrorism” and proof that ISIS is on our shores.

A shooting involving a black fellow is either “gang related” or “an indictment of black culture.”

But one involving a white fellow? “He’s obviously mentally disturbed. We can’t draw any conclusions!”

But rest assured, the answer to all is still “MOAR GUNS!!!”

Here’s a partial list of the things I don’t want to learn about the shooter after he is apprehended and/or killed:

5. What his co-workers have to say.

I had occasion to read a typical wingnut rant the other day. Once you read one of these stream-of-consciousness, free- association, seething rage screeds nothing one of these people does will surprise you. If we let them they WILL turn this country into something very, very ugly. Their “thoughts” consist of hundreds of trigger names, words, and phrases all thrown in a pot with stock made of bile, bubbling and stewing together. And this includes people who you’d otherwise think are perfectly nice and sane. Fox News and the right wing propaganda machine has primed millions of “good” people to fear, hate, and be willing to accept atrocities in order to “protect” themselves and feel safe.

They are what they eat.

98 Kryptik  Jun 18, 2015 6:54:20am

So. Nice to wake up to something like this in the morning.

This incident, and the general responses that not only seem to be filtering through twitter but in the attitudes of the “real” news covering this simply underline my belief that we as a country simply have not gotten any less racist, and perhaps even have gotten worse. It’s just more insidious, but no less eliminationist. And the age of the shooter, plus of those spouting off on racial animus through social media convince me that hopes of the younger generation being any better than their forebearers is a pipe dream.

One small point I would add though. I think most of the younger generations that have been through public forms of education are less racist.

I really worry about all the fundamentalists home schooling. There is no control, there is no outside influence and there is no real interaction. To me it is nothing more than indoctrination of screwed up thinking and ideals.

GOP really cannot actually talk to black people anymore. They’ve completely given up and are embracing becoming a whiter and whiter party.

“Fun” fact: Democrats have twice the support from EVERY racial minority than the GOP does. Twice. Even those ‘conservative’ groups such as Hispanics and Asians, Democrats absolutely demolish the GOP—and that’s just with actual party affiliation. #134 jimmyvluv4u:

Had to look up Rhodesia:

Rhodesia (/roʊˈdiËÊ’É™/, rÉ™-DEE-zhÉ™), commonly known from 1970 onwards as the Republic of Rhodesia, was an unrecognised state in southern Africa from 1965 to 1979. It comprised the region now known as Zimbabwe. The country, with its capital in Salisbury, was considered a de facto successor state to the former British colony of Southern Rhodesia (which had achieved responsible government in 1923).

During an effort to delay an immediate transition to black majority rule, Rhodesia’s predominantly white government issued its own Unilateral Declaration of Independence (UDI) from the United Kingdom on 11 November 1965. The UDI administration initially sought recognition as an autonomous realm within the Commonwealth of Nations, but reconstituted itself as a republic in 1970.

So, basically we have a white supremacist.

Hillary had already been there and I had read the deceased pastor (a state senator) had actually been at a fundraiser for her.

Oh, that is sad. I hope she uses that to get fired up about this crap.

You know, this makes me think. It sure would be nice if the Dems could come up with a firebrand type of candidate that went out and got after all the issues that no one wants to touch. Things like racism, gun control, abortion and birth control, trade and jobs…the flip side to most of the Republican crap.

Yes, I know they would never be elected, but that would be the point.

Later all…got to get to doing something to take my mind off some of this.

Thoughts to all those good folks touched by this. I hope they can get through this and I hope eventually some change can come out of it.

223 Dr. Matt  Jun 18, 2015 7:47:39am

Terrible headline……

Supreme Court blocks Texas confederate flag plate

Justice Steven Breyer, writing for the court’s majority, said that Texas’ program “constitutes government speech” and that the state was “entitled to refuse to issue plates featuring SCV’s proposed design.” Just as the state could not force drivers to espouse a particular message, he said, drivers could not force a state to espouse theirs.

The immediate impact is a setback to the Sons of Confederate Veterans, which had challenged Texas’ denial of its license plate because some residents said the image of a Confederate flag symbolized racism and division.

I also think on a practical side. How the fuck are you supposed to pray with a loaded weapon on you and everyone else? I swear, not only are the gunfuckers like Fischer insensitive pricks, they’re stupid fuckers too. Idiots like Fischer think this is a video game where the minute someone starts shooting, you press the action button to get out your gun and start firing away and if you get killed, you can restart at the last checkpoint. Likely a pistol fanny pack.

I’ve been noticing these things - guys openly wearing them front and center on the body like it should send a message that they’re packing. They look like a fanny pack but they have special opening that let you draw you pistol quickly. Conceptually it’s a camouflaged holster, but in practice it’s becoming more of a “come at me, bro” codpiece.

He’s an idiot. As I said, popes have been speaking against income inequalities for years and this goes way back. The difference however is Francis actually does live a quite humble life and he talks about poverty and inequality more than the so-con issues that Ben and the other cons would prefer he talk about. To Pope Francis, income inequality are more unChristian than same sex marriage and that pisses Ben and the other right wing lunatics off.

Smith era Rhodesia is a fading memory to many Americans, if they have heard of it all, but it has iconic status in the mercenary subculture centered on Soldier of Fortune magazine.
During the “Bush war” against African nationalists in the 70s, SOF maintained a sizable crew of correspondents in Rhodesia full time and ran articles about it in every issue.
The irony is that the real Rhodesian military of the time did not care for mercs at all and would not put them on except under their regular system of enlistment and for regular pay. The latter was a pittance by American standards. Many would-be mercenaries worked there as security guards and some as technicians. Many others were unceremoniously deported for various offenses. Weapons violations, drunken brawling, and insolence toward black police officers were especially common.

There is a difference though between being choosy about a particular Pope’s teachings, which can be seen as mere opinions (which is how they deal with the Galileo problem, for example), and the established teachings of the Church, that have become to be almost on the level of dogma.

True definitely a legitimate point but as I’ve said Popes have been preaching against income inequalities for decades now. Francis isn’t unique in that regard. The problem I have with them is they are accusing him of being insufficiently Catholic when he’s actually echoing a long tradition. But in the end, I don’t appreciate Ben Shapiro who wouldn’t know actual Marxism if it bit him on the ass calling the Pope a Marxist simply because he finds a problem with income equality and poverty.

re: #368 Fourth Football of the Apocalypse

Was Pope Paul VI’s document on birth control an encyclical as well or is that teaching considered ex cathedra?

There are very few papal pronouncements considered to be clearly infallible.

en.wikipedia.org

Regarding historical papal documents, Catholic theologian and church historian Klaus Schatz made a thorough study, published in 1985, that identified the following list of ex cathedra documents (see Creative Fidelity: Weighing and Interpreting Documents of the Magisterium, by Francis A. Sullivan, chapter 6):

Tome to Flavian, Pope Leo I, 449, on the two natures in Christ, received by the Council of Chalcedon;
Letter of Pope Agatho, 680, on the two wills of Christ, received by the Third Council of Constantinople;
Benedictus Deus, Pope Benedict XII, 1336, on the beatific vision of the just after death rather than only just prior to final judgment;[70]
Cum occasione, Pope Innocent X, 1653, condemning five propositions of Jansen as heretical;
Auctorem fidei, Pope Pius VI, 1794, condemning seven Jansenist propositions of the Synod of Pistoia as heretical;
Ineffabilis Deus, Pope Pius IX, 1854, defining the Immaculate Conception;
Munificentissimus Deus, Pope Pius XII, 1950, defining the Assumption of Mary.

There is no complete list of papal statements considered infallible. A 1998 commentary on Ad Tuendam Fidem issued by the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith published on L’Osservatore Romano in July 1998[71] listed a number of instances of infallible pronouncements by popes and by ecumenical councils, but explicitly stated (at no. 11) that this was not meant to be a complete list.

re: #328 Shiplord Kirel

May not be necessary, but I should add that this mercenary wannabe sub-group is a significant and influential component of the overall gun culture. “Served in the Rhodesian army” is a familiar claim of ammosexual bullshitters, right up there with “ex-SEAL,” but with the added advantage of being well nigh impossible to check out.

Just logged in to post something I had heard this morning and was going to post but got into the main theme this morning.

Maybe it has already been posted…but I heard this morning that Brian Williams will not be back in his old job. He will be part of a complete reworking of MSNBC into a less left-leaning, more mainstream platform.

New York Daily News - Brian Williams to return to air as part of MSNBC revamp

The future of MSNBC is in the hands of Lyin’ Brian.

Brian Williams will be a cornerstone of a revamped MSNBC that will shift its focus away from left-leaning politics and focus once again on breaking news, The Daily News has learned.

The move is an attempt by NBC News Chairman Andrew Lack to put out to major fires — the humiliating Williams scandal and MSNBC’s plummeting ratings.

Solving both issues has been a priority for Lack since he rejoined NBC in April.

At that time, ratings for the cable network’s star, Rachel Maddow were off 24% and Lawrence O’Donnell down 26%. And among viewers 25-to-54-years the prime-time lineup has lost nearly half its audience.

-cut-

You know what mainstream means, right? Yuck.

With Comcast in charge, you could see this coming.

Context? You know, I wouldn’t be shocked if President Obama actually knew Reverend Pinckney. He had been in the state senate a long time and South Carolina was a key state in his run for president back in 2008.

Joe Riley said he’d heard personally from both Biden and Obama.

Nikki—what can I say—can’t stand her, but I thought she was fairly decent here. (Remember, she knew Pinckney pretty well.)

The patches, I can give them a pass for not asking about…because most people don’t know enough to know what they mean or pay close enough attention to patches, I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t. The context becomes clear once you know what country they’re from and from when.

The confederate flag thing…yeah, I’d have to agree there.

Perhaps. Maybe I was a little more curious about who my kids brought home with them. We tended to have a full house most of the time.

When someone new came around, I would talk to them. Very friendly-like as I was making snacks. I noticed things. If they had an offensive T shirt, I would ask about it.

But then again, as bad as TX is, It is not SC or Georgia where I was raised. I know better.

As my good friend Rehnquist once wrote and every justice joined:

Moreover, the Wisconsin statute singles out for enhancement bias-inspired conduct because this conduct is thought to inflict greater individual and societal harm. For example, according to the State and its amici, bias-motivated crimes are more likely to provoke retaliatory crimes, inflict distinct emotional harms on their victims, and incite community unrest. The State’s desire to redress these perceived harms provides an adequate explanation for its penalty-enhancement provision over and above mere disagreement with offenders’ beliefs or biases. As Blackstone said long ago, “it is but reasonable that, among crimes of different natures, those should be most severely punished which are the most destructive of the public safety and happiness.” (Wisconsin v. Mitchell, citations omitted.)

Note also that the killer used a pistol. So if we talk about gun control, lets keep it to handguns and leave rifles out of it.

An arrest record, but I don’t think we heard about any convictions. And I’m not sure if they were felonies, but neither was a violent crime, so odds are they wouldn’t have been an impediment. Plus states like South Carolina like to drag their feet on reporting things like this to the FBI, so they might not even have shown up on a background check.

The whites among them apparently were, if we’re to believe this:

Part of his testimony concerned Muhammad’s complete multiphase plan. His plan consisted of three phases in the Washington, D.C. and Baltimore metro areas. Phase one consisted of meticulously planning, mapping, and practicing their locations around the D.C. area. This way after each shooting, they would be able to quickly leave the area on a predetermined path, and move on to the next location. Muhammad’s goal in Phase One was to kill six white people a day for 30 days. Malvo went on to describe how Phase One did not go as planned due to heavy traffic and the lack of a clear shot or getaway at locations.

526 HappyWarrior  Jun 18, 2015 9:27:13am

The fact of the matter is hate crimes and discrimination laws do apply to Christians and Whites as well. It doesn’t create a special class of victim. It ensures something that would result in a deadlocked jury doesn’t get skirted. I’d actually sort of understand the critics of these laws point if we didn’t have generations of generations of whites walking free after killing blacks or the infamous “Twinkie defense” in the murder of Harvey Milk.

I have no faith in anyone that pulls out a gun to “protect” a group of people. More people just end up dead. A good guy with a gun will see another good guy with a gun and shoot each other and anyone else in the way.

If you want to defend your home with a gun, then I guess that is your right. But if you are to use a gun effectively in a public situation with casualties, fatalities and general panic, you need sharp reflexes, good situational awareness, extensive training and nerves of steel.

This is not a skills set you can purchase over the counter at the Wal-Mart sporting goods section.

And there was talk of taking the children away and starting a new society with the money they were trying to extract from the government, but Malvo said he can’t be sure of Muhammad’s real motives. Malvo also said that in October 2002, he would have done anything Muhammad asked of him.

Thank you and I don’t mean to come off as hating gun owners. I do not like guns, I will admit that here, I have my reasons- personal ones for doing so but I don’t begrudge people who do but I just think too often gun owners or more accurately the gun political lobby shuts down any reasonable conversation we could have on the subject. I really don’t think it should be more difficult to operate a car than a gun. I realize that firearm ownership is constitutionally guaranteed but A) they were writing that before the arms revolution that accompanied the Industrial Revolution and industrialization and B) We have a serious problem in this country with gun violence.

In the capitols, it’s really about the ILA, the legislative lobbying arm of the NRA. They are about gun and related items mfg., caring not one whit for the desires or needs of gun owners. The extremely low membership/affiliation numbers show this very starkly. 95% of gun owners voted with their feet.

Try the Fallout 3 Tweak Guide. I play FO3 on a homebuilt PC running two NVIDIA GTX 550ti cards with the latest drivers and it works very well after some .ini file tweaks. My favorite is when they talk down to black people especially older ones “HEY DIDN’T YOU KNOW THAT GEORGE WALLACE WAS A DEMOCRAT OR THAT’S NOT WHAT MLK WOULD HAVE DONE.” I mean I admit I am not a huge admirer of Jesse Jackson but the man did put his ass on the line in the Civil Rights years and unlike many of the white conservatives out there who love to use MLK to put down blacks, Jesse actually knew and was friends with MLK. MLK should not be white people’s fall back position to put down blacks especially knowing how MLK wasn’t exactly revered among whites especially conservative whites in his own lifetime.

The New York Times Warned Us

Just two days ago, in an editorial called “The Other Terror Threat”, the NY Times warned us:

Despite public anxiety about extremists inspired by Al Qaeda and the Islamic State, the number of violent plots by such individuals has remained very low. Since 9/11, an average of nine American Muslims per year have been involved in an average of six terrorism-related plots against targets in the United States. Most were disrupted, but the 20 plots that were carried out accounted for 50 fatalities over the past 13 and a half years.

In contrast, right-wing extremists averaged 337 attacks per year in the decade after 9/11, causing a total of 254 fatalities, according to a study by Arie Perliger, a professor at the United States Military Academy’s Combating Terrorism Center. The toll has increased since the study was released in 2012.

Selvar says:

June 18, 2015 at 12:26 pm

I consider myself a believer in HBD and,to be perfectly frank, have a pretty low opinion of black people, collectively speaking. However, events like this give me pause, and make me question whether or not HBD, neoreaction and “race realism” going mainstream would be, on balance, a beneficial development in a multi-racial society. I think there are many whites, especially low IQ and impulsive whites who do not grasp the finer points of statistical analysis, who would use the findings of HBD to justify devaluing innocent non white, especially black, life.

To acknowledge inherent, aggregate racial variances in average intelligence and criminality is generally harmless when done within an academic and intellectual context where such issues are well understood, and the data less prone to misinterpretation.

However, when such knowledge finally makes the leap from the ivory tower (or the obscure blogosphere) to the popular culture, and is filtered through the lens of ignorance and misinterpretation the popular culture imposes upon all such knowledge, I fear that the end result will not be an increase in the number of Jared Taylors, Steve Sailers, or even David Dukes, but rather, an increase in the number of whites who believe that “You rape our women and you are taking over our country. And you have to go.”

Yeah she’s pretty much saying what we’ve been saying for years about guns except when we say it means we’re trying to take their guns.

There are some anti-gun extremists on the left, but yes, most of us just want guns to only be in the hands of responsible, stable people.

In other news: The House passes TPA (again). Now it goes back to The Senate.

The House vote was 218-208, with 28 Democrats voting for it.
This is the second time in a week the House has voted to approve the controversial fast-track bill.

In last week’s vote, the House GOP paired the fast-track bill with a measure known as Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA) that gives aid to workers displaced by trade. Both measures needed to be approved in separate votes for the entire package to move forward.

House Democrats have historically favored TAA, but they voted against it on Friday to kill fast-track, which is deeply opposed by unions and other liberal groups.

The White House still wants both measures to reach Obama’s desk, but is now advancing a different strategy that would see the two bills move separately.

The problem lies in the Senate, which previously approved a package that included both bills.

If the two move separately, Republicans and the White House will have to convince Senate Democrats to back fast-track on the promise that TAA will move forward at a later time.

That’s stupid. His license plate was LGF 330. XXX999 is the format for SC license plates.

“A later time,” a much, much, later time.

This place has always been argumentative. There has been a lull in that recently because of the insanity of wingnuts outside LGF.

Nobody should be surprised or upset (unless they really really want to be ) that on occasion LGF still goes for the throat (red neck or not )
.

I get that, and that doesn’t upset me, really. Healthy debate is part of why I came here and stayed. This is one of the few places where that still happens.

This shooting is just bugging the hell out of me, and the justifications and evasion of the real reason for it (not here, but seemingly everywhere else) is just really wearing me down today.

Dude he is a wingnut, that would have been my Lt Governor if the Va GOP had its way. E.W Jackson is crazaaaaaaaaaaay. You’re talking to a man who thinks George Allen is too liberal and that Planned Parenthood are worse than the Nazis.

No, but his haircut does add the the mentally-challenged look, though that’s mostly in his eyes.

He does remind me of Jim Carrey in Dumb and Dumber now that I think about it having seen the sequel which by the way isn’t terrible recently. Also Bardem in No Country For Old Men.

Don’t Rightwingers like Loesch love guns and advocate gun ownership rights above everything else? Surprised that she would criticize the parents for giving their son a gun for his birthday.

They latched onto the religious persecution angle, and that’s in conflict with their pro-gun programming.

She’s emphasizing that they gave their “druggie” son a gun. It’s still odd though since as I said, they oppose those kind of background checks on people purchasing guns.

She probably thinks is better to blame the parents then face the bigger problem that is involved is this whole thing, Racism. JMO

re: #629 Timothy Watson

Not sure how, constitutionally, you distinguish between a Confederate flag and other “controversial” subjects. A federal court a couple years required North Carolina to issue license plates supporting a pro-choice position on abortion.

Kicker is that this decision would arguably allow a state to issue pro-creationist plates while denying the request for a pro-evolution plate. So while this might stop the SCV this time around it might end up being a poor decision in the long run.

re: #681 HappyWarrior

And I see what angle the Republicans are going to go with this. Let’s totally ignore the racism and what he apparently said to the victims before he killed them.

Well that’s the same approach they take regarding the causes of the American Civil War. Ignore what the secessionists state as their reasons and assume it was all about the tariff and Lincoln being a socialist.
