A photo of Dylann Storm Roof wearing a jacket with the flags of apartheid-era South Africa, and white-ruled Rhodesia (now called Zimbabwe)

The suspect in last night’s horrific mass murder at the historic Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina, has been arrested 200 miles away in North Carolina.

And the suspect, Dylann Storm Roof, is a white supremacist who had a license plate labeled “Confederate States of America.” From his Facebook page:

And as we speak, wingnuts are spinning like centrifuges to make this about anything but race, but the popular target seems to be the parents, in light of reports that he received a gun as a birthday gift from them.

The excuses so far:

1. He isn’t white/he’s Muslim (before better photos emerged).
2. He’s a druggie.
3. He targeted Christians, not blacks.

They’re spinning so fast we could power the entire Eastern Seaboard for a decade if we could but harness that energy.

I consider myself a believer in HBD and,to be perfectly frank, have a pretty low opinion of black people, collectively speaking. However, events like this give me pause, and make me question whether or not HBD, neoreaction and “race realism” going mainstream would be, on balance, a beneficial development in a multi-racial society. I think there are many whites, especially low IQ and impulsive whites who do not grasp the finer points of statistical analysis, who would use the findings of HBD to justify devaluing innocent non white, especially black, life.

To acknowledge inherent, aggregate racial variances in average intelligence and criminality is generally harmless when done within an academic and intellectual context where such issues are well understood, and the data less prone to misinterpretation.

However, when such knowledge finally makes the leap from the ivory tower (or the obscure blogosphere) to the popular culture, and is filtered through the lens of ignorance and misinterpretation the popular culture imposes upon all such knowledge, I fear that the end result will not be an increase in the number of Jared Taylors, Steve Sailers, or even David Dukes, but rather, an increase in the number of whites who believe that “You rape our women and you are taking over our country. And you have to go.”

theamericanconservative.com

Dreher has been keeping company with Steve Sailer (our host can fill in the details on that particular piece of polished copralite) and this is what he chooses to let stand on his blog after he asks for prayer for the victims.

Going to say this again…. he probably would not have been caught so fast, if at all, if it wasn’t for the decent security cameras mounted in that church. I work in a predominantly Black church and am having this conversation with them currently. The cams we happen to have our cheap low-res garbage.

True, those cams wouldn’t have stopped this — but there’s probably one or more churches out there that will not suffer the same fate because he was apprehended so quickly.

Of course, this is the same crowd who argued that Tamir Rice’s death was due to having something that looked like a gun. And frequently term the death of a black man or teen as “good” if they so much as reached towards their waist band. Hell, I had wingnuts who were absolutely convinced that the one kid that cop in McKinney pulled a gun on was reaching for a gun himself.

I wish that it hadn’t come to this, but unfortunately these people have removed my right to defend myself on Twitter, so now I have to use the court to defend my reputation. I know what you mean but at the same time, I think using mental illness sort of distracts from the reality that some of a sound mental mind could plan something like this. I understand why people do that- no one wants to believe that a person of a sound mind is capable of such evil.

Color me cynical but too often crowd-funded donation drives on the Internet to strangers you don’t know are mismanaged or even fraudulent. Even still, I can’t begin to tell you how grateful I am for your show of generosity and concern. Thank you! :)

What conservatives don’t want to admit is they’re the reason why hate crimes legislation exists in the first place. Everything Known About Charleston Shooting Suspect Dylann Roof

White Knoll High School had a mix of black and white students. Mullins says they occasionally mixed, and the school had “a lot of preps, a little bit of gang members, and a lot of outcasts.” But Roof wasn’t one of the outcasts, Mullins said.

Yet Roof did have a reputation for spouting racist messages.

“I never heard him say anything, but just he had that kind of Southern pride, I guess some would say. Strong conservative beliefs,” he said. “He made a lot of racist jokes, but you don’t really take them seriously like that. You don’t really think of it like that.

But now, “the things he said were kind of not joking,” Mullins added.

The other thing about the “mental illness” card is that it works to portray mental illness as a stigma and those who suffer from it as ticking time bombs rather than people in need of help. Whenever I hear a wingnut play that card, they almost certainly think the answer is just to start locking “crazy people” up again. That the issue is not the ease with which a mentally ill person can acquire a gun, but that the government isn’t protecting “responsible gun owners” from all the mentally ill people running around.

re: #77 makeitstop

The racist ideas themselves are not his own invention, that’s the whole point. All those Rhodesian flags, neo-Confederate hate rags, racist jokes - all this comes from a specific milieu. If this pushed an allegedly mentally ill person (and, to repeat, we have no idea about it - at this point it’s just an excuse), this begs the question about the responsibility of these people around him.

I assume the people around him are totally irresponsible, and possibly as racist and hate-fueled as the shooter is. I sure wouldn’t hand someone that crazy a gun.

You do have decent E&O insurance to handle the MSJ (Motion for Summary Judgment), right? This little fink might just have found a lawyer as dumb as he is that will keep gnawing away & racking up bills. If he’s filing in Missouri first that probably means his attorney friend that sent Twitter the letter is his lawyer. This could get amusing.

I am especially amused that he claims to be suing so many people at once. Doesn’t he understand that by doing so he is just adding more attorneys to the opposition side? And increasing the time/cost of discovery? Not to mention what a half dozen attorneys will put him through during the discovery process?

What a moran.

The flags are of particular interest. Was it a case of a school kid reading up on a subject and immersing himself and becoming obsessed? A familial thing? We’ll need to wait and see on that, I guess.

But the statement in the church about blacks taking over the country - straight out of the RWNJ Big Book of Blame. No shortage os sources for that kind of hate.

Also, South Carolina. A place where people don’t ‘take racism seriously.’

I hate to say it, but with a middle name like “Storm” and wearing a jacket with the apartheid era South African flag, I got a feeling this dude was raised on a daily dose of white supremacy. The media will certainly try to tie him and his actions to conservatives and we can rest assured that the gun control nuts are going to have a field day. Roof’s insanity will be met with more insanity from the left.

Making it about the religion means that Graham (and others) can share in the mantle of victimhood instead of having to address how their party contributes to an atmosphere that encourages racism.

One of the flags on the Jacket is the South African flag pre-1994 (the apartheid government) , basically the Royal tricolor of the Netherlands, upon which is added the smaller flags of the Union Jack, the former Orange Free State flag, and the older South African Republic flag.

That he would own or wear this is a message. I’m guessing he is a hardcore racist and very possibly comes from a family that could be supportive of such attitudes.

From 1965 to 1979, it was a very special place.

The Shooter is responsible for his own actions. There is no collective responsibility. Now there can be an argument that he used racist arguments to motivate his heinous actions but that’s about as far as that goes. The people who influenced his actions won’t be going to jail with him. I guess a lefty version would be having the flag of the Spanish Republic. Not that I am comparing the Spanish Republic at all to Ian Smith’s Rhodesia here mind you, I am saying that would be an example of a similar obscure thing that someone would have to take the time to research. He definitely either had an interest in this stuff early on or someone pushing him towards it or equally likely a little bit of both.

How the hell can you plan something like that? And that means to me that I don’t think mental illness was a factor. This strikes me as a cold, calculated plan. Having some mental issues myself, mental issues are more characterized by impulsiveness. I ought to know. I’m the most impulsive person I know.

You plan something like this if you are evil and high-functioning. Since neither of these points is dispositive either way on possible mental issues, I really wish random chatter (especially on the MSM) would stop this useless speculation about insanity etc.

I recall an Orioles pitcher named Storm Davis. I think that was a nickname. For what it’s worth, Wolf is a name that Hitler apparently loved to call himself and this is a name that my brother loves too and my brother is about the furthest thing from a white supremacist there is.

IIRC, it was because his name Adolf came from “Adalwolf” or “Athalwolf”, meaning ‘noble wolf’ in Old High German. One of his aliases was “Herr Wolf”.

I hate it. People with mental issues are far more likely to be the victims of violence than commit it themselves. And yes this shows a high functioning mind. I mean I sort of do get why they do this narrative. By making the murderer mentally ill, it becomes easier to make him an outcast and an “other” when in reality he’s probably a kid that anyone of us could have known growing up or a playmate of our children.

I think that’s from being really racist themselves, but understanding that that it’s not socially acceptable anymore, so they claim they’re just defending their race like the NAACP defends African Americans. Of course it’s bullshit.

His roommate was also probably 20 years old who no doubt thought the guy was just talking shit. I gotta give the kid a break.

Roof Sr who gave the guy the gun? No excuses.

Yeah the uncle or whatever relative gave him the kid deserves more flack. Still though if someone starts talking about Civil War, it’s definitely something I’d be alarmed about.

Because this is his constituency. He got the shit scared out of him last year when he ran for reelection, so he’s gonna butter them up however he can. By avoiding any mention of race and portraying this as an attack on Christians, he gets a two-fer.

That’s may be the excuse often mentioned, but he really didn’t get the shit scared out of him. His closest competitor in the primary got a whopping 15% to Lindsey’s 57%, so he didn’t even have to have a runoff.

i’ve known right wingers who will tell you with a straight face that the NAACP or La Raza is the black and Latino version of the KKK. Ask them the last time either of those groups murdered or even assaulted someone for being white and you get “But but but Sharpton, Jackson.”

Yeah I saw that. See, that’s why I am a little cynical. I mean this generation is more progressive than others. It is, that is a fact but we’re not immune from having some of the worst bigots. It’s why frankly I am not hopeful about the generation of conservatives from my generation. And if you really look at the GOP candidates, you’ll see some of the most reactionary are those like Cruz, Jindal who aren’t exactly old men.

And smatterings throughout:

I saw a reference to how many Twitter followers one of the ‘defendants’ has in Missouri, too.

Can’t tell you how many at that age in the late 60s/early 70s talked of Revolution! but I never knew one who did anything to follow through. Now if one got real specific and started collecting bomb materials, it woukd have been a different story. We don’t know that the guy got that real with hus roommate.

I imagine he pleads out and will probably avoid the DP.

I’m betting that depends on how badly he wants to be a martyr.

His uncle said it was a birthday gift from Dylann’s father.

well let’s be clear…

nine people are dead…. needlessly so…

why?

Not because they weren’t armed…

They’re dead because someone, a young white male, who has been shown to wear symbols of racism on his facebook page, went into a church and shot them.

If hearsay is to be believed, he told them he was killing them because he feared that they were his enemy. That’s right, his enemy. Unarmed people in Bible Study were his enemy because of their skin color.

He didn’t pick up that reasoning due to liberals…

The conservatives are busy using Family Circus Billy on his way home logic.

There are essentially two fucking dots here.

He’s sporting clothes and accessories that show him to be a racist and then he planned and murdered nine Black people.

re: #228 The Vicious Babushka

I remember about 8 years ago a shooter attacked a church in Colorado and was stopped by an armed security guard.

Gun fuckers who would be all over this story don’t like to mention it because that same security guard was later thrown out of the church for being gay.

Funny, that.

re: #347 The War TARDIS

With as nasty as he is?

No, he will likely commit a mass shooting in the next year. If I were a Californian Mosque, I would have guards.

And, if I were our humble host, I would recommend staying a bit more vigilant and making sure that Mossberg’s good-to-go in the house, if he still has it.

Upon a quick scan, I saw this:

36. Plaintiff Johnson repeatedly requested that Defendnant Howard publically retract his defamatory statements, but Defendant Johnson refused.

Chuck’s lawyer is every bit as sloppy as Chuck himself.

(BTW, Charles - if you’d rather not have us comment on this, just say so.)

Not only that, but also this little gem:

Defendnant Howard
