Dylann Roof’s Roommate Says He Was “Planning Something Like That for Six Months”

“He was big into segregation and other stuff”

Wow. If this is accurate, why the hell didn’t Dylann Storm Roof’s roommate report this to the authorities?

Dylann Roof, the alleged gunman authorities say is responsible for killing nine people in a predominantly black Charleston, South Carolina, church Wednesday night, had been “planning something like that for six months,” according to his roommate.

Dalton Tyler, who said he has known Roof for seven months to one year, said he saw the white, 21-year-old suspect just last week.

“He was big into segregation and other stuff,” Tyler said. “He said he wanted to start a civil war. He said he was going to do something like that and then kill himself.”

You basically asked the question that I asked when I saw the headline. Who’s more reprehensible, the shooter, or the guy who stands idly by and lets the shooter carry out his plot without speaking up?

yes. the clip I posted of Rep Clyburn def fits this dude.

“People of ill will in our society, make a much better use of their time than those of good will. We will be made to repent not just for bad people…but the silence of good people. I come here today to beg you, when you leave these hallowed halls…please break your silence. Speak up! “

The answer is in that last statement:

“He was big into segregation and other stuff,” Tyler said. “He said he wanted to start a civil war. He said he was going to do something like that and then kill himself.”

Lot’s of people talk a good talk, and do nothing. And talking a good talk is covered by the first amendment. Also he was surrounded by people who had probably thought the same thing as he did but were lazy, and if they weren’t going to actually do anything, why would someone else.

Because it didn’t sound all that unusual to him.

IANAL, but I think he could only be charged if he directly helped in the planning or execution.

re: #6 wheat-dogghazi-mailgate

To be an accessory after the fact, he would have had to have helped him hide or hidden evidence after the shooting had already taken place.

Unless he had specific information about this shooting beforehand, I doubt he can be charged with anything.

He could still be named in any civil suits, though. It depends on how many details he knew of Roof’s plan, and I assume the police and FBI will be asking those very questions.

Before the fact, and no almost certainly not. Unfortunately this country has very few mandated reporters. People are allowed, encouraged even, to ignore all kinds of messed up shit.

Bless this woman. She did more in a few minutes than this sumabitch roommate did the whole time he knew the suspect.

BREAKING: Tip from Kings Mountain florists led to Charleston shooting suspect’s arrest

…She wasn’t sure at first why she recognized the car.

“I saw the pictures of him with the bowl cut. I said, ‘I’ve seen that car for some reason.’ I look over, and it’s got a South Carolina tag on it,” Dills said Thursday afternoon. “I thought, ‘Nah, that’s not his car.’ Then, I got closer and saw that haircut. I was nervous. I had the worst feeling. Is that him or not him?”…

After first spotting Roof’s car in south Gastonia, Dills said, she followed him to the Kings Mountain exit on the U.S. 74 bypass, then exited to head to work at the florist shop in downtown Kings Mountain. Something didn’t feel right to her, so she headed back to the bypass and drove west to attempt to catch up to Roof to provide more details.

“What if that really was him?” she thought. “I have friends going to the mountains this weekend, so if it that was him and something would happen again, what would I do? It kept eating at me, and something told me to keep following him.”

She caught up to Roof’s Hyundai again near East Dixon Boulevard in Shelby and continued to follow him. She stayed on the phone with Frady. Dills saw Shelby Police officers begin to follow Roof at the Ingles on 74 and Polkville Road and at first stayed behind, knowing the situation was under control.

But Dills wanted to see things through.

When she caught back up with police, Roof was pulled over and apprehended. She had followed the wanted man for 35 miles….

I mentioned the Chief Justice this morning, first thing because of South Carolina and voter rights. And Roberts BS about racism being gone in America. Think Progress did a story on it. Sorry if posted earlier, but I don’t remember seeing it.

Think Progress - When John Roberts Said There Isn’t Enough Racism In America To Justify The Voting Rights Act

Two years ago next Thursday, Chief Justice John Roberts walked into the Supreme Courtroom, took his seat in the Court’s center chair, and then, after waiting for his colleagues to dispose of some less-closely watched business, he began to tell a fairy tale about a nation redeemed.

Once upon a time, Roberts began, “voting discrimination against African-Americans was so entrenched and pervasive in 1965 that to cite just one example, less than 7% of African-Americans of voting age in Mississippi had been able to register to vote.” But then, Roberts told the Courtroom, America set aside this past. “There are examples of progress, more poignant than the numbers,” the chief justice claimed. “During the Freedom Summer of 1964 in Philadelphia, Mississippi, three men were murdered while working in the area to register African-American voters. On Bloody Sunday in Selma, Alabama in 1965, police beat and used tear gas on hundreds marching in support of enfranchising African-Americans. Today, both Philadelphia and Mississippi and Selma, Alabama have African-Americans mayors.”

“Our country has changed,” Roberts wrote in the opinion he delivered that day, Shelby County v. Holder. It has wiped away so much of its racist past that the “extraordinary measures” employed by a key provision of the Voting Rights Act could no longer be justified.

Wednesday night, a white man walked into an historic black church in Charleston, South Carolina. He sat inside the congregation for an hour, as churchgoers engaged in Bible study. Then he announced to the African American congregants that they are “taking over our country,” and he opened fire. This murderer killed nine men and women, more people than those who were killed in the Philadelphia murders and Bloody Sunday combined.

That was my first thought earlier, that the morons declaring that if the congregation had been armed they’d have stopped Roof are the same ones who said that the cop was right to shoot Tamir Rice dead within seconds of arriving because they couldn’t tell that the gun was fake at first glance. And John Crawford was also shot on sight on the same argument “It looked real!”

Goddamn people are helpless. It’s a predominately African-American congregation because the African Methodists are a sect within Methodism that was founded by former slaves and freemen who weren’t accepted by Methodists. It’s not racism and hell they were accepting Dylann Roof into their Bible study right until he murdered them. Goddamn I hate people sometimes for not even wanting to look at things.

I’ve mentioned my great uncle before but he was a white man that was a priest to a predominately African-American congregation in Louisiana in the 40’s. They definitely welcomed him with open arms. What these idiots refuse to understand is that the reason why so called black churches were often founded in the first place is yeah racism and also the biblical justification by many white churches for slavery. This church has existed in South Carolina longer than many families including well over 80% of my own have been in this country. It was founded in a time of history where AFrican-Americans were treated like subhumans in the South.

This is how insane white people are in America. A kid in a rhodesian/aparthied flag jacket, driving a car with a confederate flag license plate can go into a church, tell a group of black people he’s about to murder them because they are black, and white people will say with a straight face that he was not racist. The most tone deaf is Nikki Haley acting like she has no idea how this could have happened when she sees living proof of why this kind of shit happens every day in that ugly piece of shit flag called the Confederate Flag which as I said earlier today made a comeback in Southern capitals not because of “pride” but because of the Civil Rights era.

I’d argue that historically black churches have been much more welcoming of white visitors than historically white churches have been of black visitors, until fairly recent times. So, I can fully understand why AA people would rather attend a church that warmly welcomes them.

I have a white friend in the States who goes to an AME church because she says it way more fun than an uptight white church service.

I don’t have much personal experience with black churches or really many churches at all but I think so much of this really boils down to is white bigots are afraid that black people will treat them the way they have treated black people for generations. Man I feel for that pastor and the other eight people who died. They probably were genuinely moved that he wanted to join their Bible study and then what happened happened. As for fun, I am reminded of that scene in Forrest Gump where Forrest attends the predominately black congregation.

We had a shooting this morning in South Carolina,” Paul said (the shooting happened last night). “What kind of person goes into church and shoots nine people? There’s a sickness in our country, there’s something terribly wrong, but it isn’t going to be fixed by your government. It’s people straying away, it’s people not understanding where salvation comes from. And I think that if we understand that, we’ll understand and have better expectations of what we get from our government.”

Obama has probably had the most diverse administration of people I’ve seen not just in cultural backgrounds but also differences in ideology too. But it seems to me on that day in November when many of us felt like a new chapter with new hope in American history had began, others decided to make it worse. Remember Paul Ryan, Mitch McConnell, Kevin McCarthy, and several high ranking Republicans actually were meeting the day Obama became president to come up with ways to sabotage him.

Long story short: Dalton Tyler could not be charged with Obstruction of Justice in this matter unless he took some action to conceal a crime by Roof or helped Roof evade arrest. Tyler’s simply knowing in general terms that Roof was planning some sort of atrocity and Tyler not reporting that would not constitute a crime.

But assuming the murder weapon is the gun Roof was given by his father, then the law was broken at that point, assuming the father knew his son had been charged criminally (which I’m assuming he would). And the father did pass a background check. The violation of the law would only have been detected had police searched Roof’s room or his car while the gun was there or had they found it on his person when he was arrested that second time.

Assuming Roof Sr. knew of his son’s indictment, then he should be charged with buying a firearm for a prohibited person.

Ok, I am all for closing the gun show loophole, but does anyone seriously think that would have prevented this guy from getting this gun. As far as I can tell, his father got the gun legally and then illegally gave it to his son. Well clearly the crime is beyond heinous. This is another sad day in America. If the facts are what they appear to be, I believe the death penalty should be applied if SC has it.

It’s also pathetic but predictable that anti-second amendment liberals are wasting no time trying to capitalize on the tragedy for political gain. And as horrifically tragic as the murder of 9 innocents is, and it is, those who bring race into into this analysis ought to keep some perspective. In any complete, non-cherry-picked analysis of personal crimes, the data shows that whites are murdered, raped and attacked by blacks far, far more often than the reverse.

The short answer is that I don’t see ES or any of the other ‘anti-racists’ here taking responsibility, however slight, for things like the Hartford Beer Distributor shooting.

Nor do those that bandy the term Islamophobia claim responsibility for things like the Fort Hood shooting, nor do those who advocate loose asylum policies or effective open borders take responsibility for the Boston Marathon bombing or the death of Bob “Christmas Story” Clark at the hands of a drunk driver, already been through the ‘justice system’ and should have been deported illegal alien. Not surprising. And Selvar is right in a way, ideas do have consequences. For those of us who believe in white rights we will no matter what be blamed, by forces far more powerful than a blog commenter, for this crime. If I feel guilt, the majority of it comes from feeling bad for what this will do to a completely legitimate movement (as legitimate as any other ethnic movement) to promote white interests in the US (or a successor state).

I should be sympathetic to the victims and families, and am as far as it is possible to be sympathetic to people you don’t know and have never met. Still, it is natural, if not exactly noble, to worry about how events affect your own life and interests, and this will be a setback.

Well, that was going to be a short answer, but material just kept occurring to me. A more nuanced but tl;dr comment will follow.

Yeah…there was more to that post.

Tehy cry about “anti second amendment liberals” but not one word for those on the right who have attempted to make this into an attack on Christianity only. Shocked I am not.

And the problem with the loophole, as Frank pointed out, is that getting a conviction will mean convincing a jury beyond a reasonable doubt that the father knew his son was charged with a felony and gave him the gun anyway.

Yeah, hoping there is some concrete evidence like say, maybe the father paid his bail, or maybe he was in court for the arraignment.

@Selvar, I really identify with your comment. I had the same feeling about two decades ago, when my political views began to change and become more pro-white, pro-Christian majority.

It occurred to me then that if Americans were to start talking truthfully about religion, ethnicity, and race, then there would probably be an increase in immoral and unacceptable behavior, including even violence, against minorities (including my own). One thing that still bothers me about the people you mention and their colleagues is that they refuse even to acknowledge that there might be a problem there.

I don’t believe that it’s always right to speak the truth; you’re partly responsible for what happens as a result of what you say, including even nut cases like the killer here. But I think the good that comes from restoring the dominant religion, ethnicity, and race (Christian, Anglo-Saxon, white) to their proper place in the culture outweighs the increase in injustice that would result against minorities. And yes, I am talking about cultural hegemony; and no, I am not talking about restoring Jim Crow or the Confederacy or whatever.

In any case, I don’t think it’s a question that can be answered in terms of abstract principles. The only way to answer it is to weigh the actual expected consequences of your political position, including those consequences that you don’t intend or condone, including horrific events like this one.

Eventually, some day, hopefully many years out yet, I’m going to have to go to the gun shop to officially transfer another eighteen or so guns from my Dad’s collection into mine. Every single one will have to be serial checked and I’ll have to go through yet another background check. All because California isn’t retarded about this shit and because I’m the only one in the family he trusts to take possession of them.

But that’s not normal, most States don’t require this and the idea that family alone is the best judge of character is just fucking insane.

Exactly. From the sounds of it, Roof is out on his own, so unless there’s evidence that his father either paid bail or appeared with him in court, he could argue that he wasn’t aware Dylann was in trouble with the law, or that he did but wasn’t aware of the details.

Have we actually regressed? I mean it here. I mean we did make history and man am I glad I was part of it in making Barack Obama our first African-American president but have we actually gotten worse? This isn’t Obama;s fault.

Yes, I think we have lost significant ground in relations between black and white America…and it was working class older whites for the most part who completely lost their shit.

“The constitution does a lot to protect people,” said John Burns, Johnson’s St. Louis-based attorney. “Even people who are in the spotlight are entitled to certain protections, too. There’s lots of defamation there. Frankly, textbook defamation.”

The suit says they are seeking at least $66 million in actual and punitive damages, though Burns said they are seeking a recovery of about $20 million.

Burns would not elaborate as to why the suit was filed in Missouri, citing “strategy.”

“I will say this: I’m not an idiot,” Burns said.

I wasn’t here earlier during the whole South Carolina flag discussion, so wanted to add a few notes.

It is nauseating. I was at the State House two weeks ago, and seeing that thing on the grounds makes me ill. But, the loons here are not going to take it down without a huge fight. Vincent Sheheen, who ran against Nikki in both 2010 and 2014 brought it up as an issue in the 2014 election. He lost to Icky Nikki by about twice the margin that he did in 2010.

Whenever that flag comes up, I think of the scene from “Sports Night” (my very favorite TV show) that was about a football player refusing to play under the flag (the episode was called “The Six Southern Gentlemen of Tennessee.”)

Robert Guillaume’s character gives an “on-air editorial” that tears my guts out every time:

In the history of the South, there’s
much to celebrate. And that flag is a
desecration of all of it. It’s a
banner of hatred and separation. It’s
a banner of ignorance and violence and
a war that pitted brother against
brother, and to ask young black men
and women, young Jewish men and women,
Asians, Native Americans, to ask
Americans to walk beneath its shadow
is a humiliation of irreducable
proportions. And we all know it.

If you thought that the RWNJs loved Putin before…

Just to put some context onto it, it’s not “Russia demanding a probe”, it’s a Russian official flirting with the CT in order to make a rhetorical point about jurisdictional issues (related to the US FIFA investigation).

It doesn’t make it less derpy (because it’s a high-placed official flirting with a demented CT), but it’s not the same as “demanding a probe”.

This is OT but might be something of interest, or a forwarning at least. I was in the car on the way out to dinner with a friend when I got a call. Not having my glasses on to see that it was a private number, I answered it - I usually don’t answer such calls. So it was this young woman from mumble asking if I was (my name) and saying I was being served mumble mumble. I asked, who are you? She said something about process server, clearly nervous, and that she was just a receptionist. I was in the car so I couldn’t really hear well. She suggested that she call back and leave a voice mail with the info. Okay.

It was this threatening message about a complaint filed against me with a case number and a demand that I call this 855 number within 24 hours or the case will proceed. Freaked me out. There’s no reason in hell anyone would have reason for a complaint - well okay sometimes I play music kinda loud late at night and my dog barks at people, but hey, not worth suing over - unless my identity has been stolen or something. I even checked my curent credit report. No problem. Then I thought to google the phone number. Oh. The number I got was one digit off but it was the same story. Scam.

Now I wanna know how they got my number that I don’t give to anyone without seriously good reason. I even give a fake number for online orders and stuff. Pisses me off.

I made a tasty pasta sauce tonight for dinner, which would make BeachDem sad because it started with sauteing garlic in olive oil and then adding canned tomatoes and canned tomato sauce and jazzing it up.

One of the better ones I’ve ever made, in fact.

I was thinking of you when I made the garlic confession!

There are a few things I love enough (shrimp creole; cioppino) that I’ll chew on Zantac and suffer the consequences if there’s a lot of garlic in them, but usually, when I’m eating out, I have 2-3 potential dishes in mind that require quizzing the wait staff about the garlic content and then making a fast decision so as not to drive everyone crazy.

Or I just make them at home and substitute other flavors.

I was not a happy camper during the great “garlic mashed potatoes are the best thing since sliced bread and go with everything” era of culinary history.

I’m cooking a bunch tomorrow in prep for the camping trip mr. klys and I are taking up to the Sierras this next week, and I should probably get a little more garlic.

It’s a good thing he likes garlic and olives, because otherwise he would hate my cooking. (And mushrooms. And cucumber. And cilantro. And onion.)

Always take fresh garlic and basil when camping. Garlic as a powerful antibiotic - very superior to antibiotic ointments which seal infection in with petroleum - in case of cuts or burns. Fresh basil to bruise and apply to instatly stop the burn and inflammation of insect stings.

One more comment before I leave—today was a terrible day, mainly because of the Charleston horror. It was terrible in general, and really close to the bone, because, as I mentioned, I had friends who were two blocks away from the church when it happened, and had a few others who, had the evening’s events not fallen just the way they did, might have even been at the church. (other legislator friends who were friends of Clem’s, and who were in Charleston for the Hillary event.)

This evening was our Dem Women’s group meeting where we awarded our annual scholarships to graduating high school seniors, and the kids who won this year, and the essays they wrote, were just heart-warming. It was a wonderful evening, with everyone really coming together and sharing stories, and hope, and a commitment to do positive things, and it was great.

And the kids were so enthusiastic, and so positive and so ready to go out and change the world for the better that it really lifted everyone’s spirits about the future.

249 Nyet  Jun 18, 2015 11:52:40pm

That it’s weird and stands out goes without saying. One possible explanation was SA roots, it doesn’t seem to have been confirmed. Another explanation is that either he was with a group that deals in the memes, or he took time to “educate” himself at specific websites that deal in the memes. Either way it shows extra-effort and indicates a larger problem, because of course there’s a whole subculture built around specifically Rhodesia. I know some Russian and Ukrainian fans, some of whom are even otherwise sane people.

Right. I was thinking that his mother, father, or perhaps both were South African immigrants. When I heard that he apparently was a Neo-Confederate sympathizer though, I reversed myself. It is clear to me though that Dylann Roof definitely did immerse himself in learning as much about a quite obscure regime enough that he would want to get their flag as a patch.

That was why I thought he had family ties at first. It’s that obscure. As I said earlier, I’m pretty well versed in history, this was what I got my BA in but I really know nothing about Ian Smith and Rhodesia outside some basics. I now think what Sergey is saying in 249 that he definitely immersed himself in learning about it. I believe a comp I used earlier would be an avid leftist owning a flag or patch with the Spanish Republic of the 1930’s. Not that I was comparing the Spanish Republic to Rhodesia and South Africa during Apartheid in their actions mind you but that both are fairly obscure and would take someone who deeply immersed in a subculture to want to educate themselves about them. I still think Dylann Roof had some key role model- a parent, relative, or perhaps some other adult in his life that adcuated himself about it because as you’re saying it’s definitely odd for a 21 year old to want to know about this regimes. My instinct that he is the son of white South African immigrants was because of that obscurity.

Lots of intersection between the KKK mindset and white supremacists in South Africa though. Anyhow, I never doubted he was American raised but I thought that given the obscurity of the regime he admired enough to put on his jacket that he had some kind of ties to that area.

I definitely tend to agree. But i also wouldn’t be surprised if he was a curious mind who had heard about Nelson Mandela and wanted to look up who the people were that oppressed Mandela and in his twisted logic made them into his heroes. Now I definitely think the racism was something that’s probably been there from the start. I am just saying it wouldn’t shock me if he took the time to educate himself about the Apartheid regime and Ian Smith’s Rhodesia and in his crazy world saw them as the good guys in what happened there. It’s not a big deal really. My observation was based in part in how I educate myself about things.

well if there’s no bright new shiny for the media to chase over the next few days (like a plane crash or a volcanic eruption wiping out a city) , I fully expect the full scrutiny of the media to fall upon the survivor, who’s chilling reporting of what was said prior to the executions places this firmly in the racist hate crime camp.

I don’t like it, but you just know, that if the Right can prevaricate on this to the extent of what has taken place thus far, that a counter-top inspection will be forthcoming shortly.

I hate that these media types (Faux and AM Radio) that sow all of this hate and discontent and then project all of their insipid bullshit on the left get their comeuppance, I despise their handmaidens, who help shape the narrative into what Faux determines it should be.

I really want somebody else to get righteously pissed in a statehouse and call out these bigoted bastards for who they are, classist, racist, cowardly children who refuse to leave their bubble and make an effort to help anyone else, except those that they toady to.

I ID as Agnostic myself these days. But yes, I too would have been happy ot join them. IT just pains me thinking about those poor people. The thing that honestly disturbed me the most was reading about how apparently Roof sat down for the prayer study with them so you know at least for a minute or so he was talking cordially with them and then he brings out the gun. I am just tired of this stuff. I am tired of whenever it happens the first response by the gun lobby is to actually have the nerve to suggest that more guns would have prevented it. Never Mind the Pope, Australia Plans Czar to Police Windfarms

A day after Pope Francis urged world leaders to cut fossil-fuel emissions, Australia outlined plans to appoint a commissioner to crack down on windfarms.

The government is also backing further research into whether windfarms damage people’s health, Environment Minister Greg Hunt said Friday in a radio interview.

People have “concerns over the localized impacts of wind energy and they deserve a right to be heard,” Hunt said. “This is where the role of a commissioner comes in.”

Prime Minister Tony Abbott, who’s labeled windfarms as ugly and noisy, has shown limited enthusiasm to join the U.S. and China in a broader global fight against climate change. His government axed a price on carbon emissions and is negotiating with lawmakers over reducing renewable energy targets.

The high temperature at Thermal was 119 degrees today, which broke a daily record for the 18th of June (old record 114 in 2012). Only nine June days in Thermal’s history were hotter than today (records date back to 1950). It was extremely dry so the heat index was only 107. Meanwhile, at the coast, the high temperature was 67 degrees at Newport Beach and Oceanside Harbor. The temperature contrast can be very large this time of year in Southern California, but this difference of 52 degrees is quite remarkable.

Very interesting. You do see a lot of bs romancing. I have never gotten CSA romanticism frankly though. The Civil War was a rough time in this nation’s history.

Yeah, I’d say racist is both an accurate and appropriate term. Seeing as how proud they are to announce publicly their feelings on the matter, I find it odd that they seem so excercised when being properly identified. Tis a puzzlement.

Racists I notice like to deflect. Like they bring up the slim pickings of black slave owners as somehow proof that slavery in this country was not racist and used to rationalize white supremacy. Or my favorite is when they bring up what the parties were 150 years ago as if the parties ideologies haven’t evolved or frankly in the case of the GOP devolved.

Huckabee: It’s the Supreme Court, NOT the Supreme Branch and it’s sure not the Supreme Being. Many politicians have surrendered to the false god of judicial supremacy. This is wrong. It leads to judicial tyranny. Look on the bright side (and I’m being sarcastic, of course) - according to Professor Frank Fenner, our species will probably be extinct within 100 years.

Eminent Australian scientist Professor Frank Fenner, who helped to wipe out smallpox, predicts humans will probably be extinct within 100 years, because of overpopulation, environmental destruction and climate change.

Fenner, who is emeritus professor of microbiology at the Australian National University (ANU) in Canberra, said homo sapiens will not be able to survive the population explosion and “unbridled consumption,” and will become extinct, perhaps within a century, along with many other species. United Nations official figures from last year estimate the human population is 6.8 billion, and is predicted to pass seven billion next year.

Fenner told The Australian he tries not to express his pessimism because people are trying to do something, but keep putting it off. He said he believes the situation is irreversible, and it is too late because the effects we have had on Earth since industrialization (a period now known to scientists unofficially as the Anthropocene) rivals any effects of ice ages or comet impacts.

Creationists and their idiocies:

What Is Racism?

[…]

The biblical truth is that all humans come from Adam, and all humans come from Noah. As C.S. Lewis might say, that is grand enough to exalt any person, and humble enough to remind anyone that we are but dust. One of the most important features of racism, then, is either a partial or full denial of this fundamental truth. This goes a long way towards a definition. If we are not all from the same origin, then we have room to claim that one race is superior to another. This is one of the biggest problems with the theory of multiple origins of the human race. Evolution and the denial of the historical Adam will have racism as its intended or unintended consequence. Ben Stein showed this quite eloquently in his movie “Expelled,” which you should see if you haven’t yet. […]

[…] The flip side of this adaptive characteristic is the very pale complexion of Norwegians. They adapted to their frigid climate in the opposite way. If lots of Africans migrated to Norway, over a period of a few hundred years, their skin would lighten quite noticeably. Similarly, if the Norwegian migrated to Africa, his skin would darken quite a bit just in his own lifetime. […]

So I tuned in a bit of CNN last night. They mentioned the federal investigation of the SC shootings to establish that they constitute a hate crime and then added that such protections were there to benefit “blacks and other minorities”.

WTF? A hate crime is a hate crime regardless of whether the victim is a minority or a majority. If the victims are chosen for their race or affiliation, and if the intent of the crime is to intimidate and threaten others like them, then it constitutes a hate crime.

I am still debating whether this shoddy reporting was simply cluelessness on the part of CNN or a deliberate attempt to skewer the discussion and provoke outcries from certain quarters.

Violence from “far right” extremists is one of the top threats singled out by law enforcement agencies polled by the New York Times last year. Pointing that out was so politically fraught that Daryl Johnson, an expert in right wing terrorist groups left the Department of Homeland Security in 2010 after it dissolved his team, Wired reports.

“There’ve been no hearings about the rising white supremacist threat, but there’s been a long list of attacks over the last few years,” he told Wired. “But they still hold hearings about Muslim extremism. It’s out of balance.”

rawstory.com

There won’t be any hearings into far-right groups and the festering hatred that they’re breeding.

The GOP’s afraid of alienating their base.

Of course, in an ideal world, there would be hearings, and the national GOP would make it abundantly clear that anyone who harbors such sentiments - be they grassroots activists, Representatives or Senators, no longer has a place in the Republican Party, and the party would loudly and clearly disavow them and everything they stand for. Reince Priebus, John Boehner, Mitch McConnell, etc., would hold a press conference in prime-time to say this. They would disavow people like Rush Limbaugh, Ann Coulter, etc., and condemn them in no uncertain terms.

But we all know that’s never gonna happen. They’re too cowardly and craven to do such a thing. And let’s face it - if they did that, the GOP would be lucky to get one of their candidates elected as municipal dogcatcher.

An Ohio man harassed a group of children, at least some of whom were black, while pursuing them on foot through his neighborhood, hurling racial epithets in their direction, threatening them with a gun, and urging police to come arrest the children, WKBN reports.

[…]

Struthers Police Detective Jeff Lewis tells WKBN that the department plans to pursue an ethnic intimidation charge against Mamounis. He has been released on a $300 bond and is scheduled to appear Friday before the Struthers Municipal Court.

In a phone conversation, Mamounis tells WKBN that, despite video and audio evidence to the contrary, “he did not have a gun and was not chasing the kid.” He was only “walking after them to get more information from them” and he “did not use the N-word,” Mamounis says.

[…]

Let me see if I get this correctly: a white guy threatens black kids with a real gun and gets out of jail with a $300 bond.

Contrast that to a black kid with a water gun who gets executed by police.

I understand the meeting, whose resolutions I am considering, to be in favor of suppressing the rebellion by military force — by armies. Long experience has shown that armies can not be maintained unless desertion shall be punished by the severe penalty of death. The case requires, and the law and the constitution, sanction this punishment. Must I shoot a simple-minded soldier boy who deserts, while I must not touch a hair of a wiley agitator who induces him to desert? This is none the less injurious when effected by getting a father, or brother, or friend, into a public meeting, and there working upon his feeling, till he is persuaded to write the soldier boy, that he is fighting in a bad cause, for a wicked administration of a contemptable government, too weak to arrest and punish him if he shall desert. I think that in such a case, to silence the agitator, and save the boy, is not only constitutional, but, withal, a great mercy.

- Abraham Lincoln

(bolding mine)
I am not advocating that Roof is a soldier, or any such silly race war concept. But instead the point that we see an advocate wanting to execute the low-level person who acted while ignoring the wider and deeper agitators who espouse the actions undertaken.

The other point to make here is that if they had all been armed, you’ve also upped the general injury and death rate across the community by x% due to accidents, suicides, escalations of petty arguments/crimes etc.

Gun violence is a systemic issue. It’s not just a question of “I arm myself to protect myself”. By arming oneself, one makes everyone a little less safe. That’s why the pro-gun lobby was so keen to suppress public health research into gun violence for years.

Depends.

The movie theatre in Aurora? Not a chance. That would have been a nightmare for a fucking trained SEAL, much less anyone of the rest of us.

The Virgina Tech shooting? Plausible. The gunman was at large for an extended period of time and all the classrooms were warned and had managed to barricade themselves. The lighting was good and nearly zero chance of hitting bystanders in hallways or if you were one of the people behind a barricade (in at least once instance, he forced through a barricaded door as students fled through a window as I recall, and would have made himself a nearly ideal target)

So yeah, in that very unusual situation, a student with a gun could likely have stopped the killer…but mass killings are usually chaotic (like the Gabby Giffords incident) and it can be extremely difficult to even recognize who the killer is and who the ‘good guys with guns’ are (again, with the Giffords shooting, a civilian with a CCW nearly shot the people who actually tackled the shooter. Come to think of it…police shoot the wrong people with distressing regularity variety.com )

Right, that’s really my main point that mass killings are chaotic. I do remember that with the Giffords shooting. 506 Aunty Entity Dragon  Jun 19, 2015 8:36:57am

re: #485 Higgs Boson’s Mate

I really doubt it. For the most part, ppl actually do not want to shoot and kill even if they are packing (there was a nasty case of training aids for cops a year or so ago with pistol targets of little children and pregnant women holding guns to get cops to overcome their natural reluctance to shoot kids and women. Like that’s what we fucking need…)

Even at the apex of gun owning anarchy in the 1870’s West, you really don’t see incidents of ppl shooting each other by mistake to a sigificant degree in confrontations (which were actually not as common as the movies make out)

Most ppl, gun owners or not, will take cover at the sound of close gunfire and then evaluate if they should get out OR try to shoot back. The taking cover thing is hardwired evolution…but the idea that 15 people are going to randomly shoot any living person they see simply doesn’t hold water.

Maybe, despite Roof’s confession, his real motivation was about a war on Christians. Perhaps we’ll never know the real reason, despite Roof saying what the real reason is. The last thing we’d want to do is jump to conclusions to make a racist hate crime about race, even when the confessed murderer is telling us that’s exactly what it is.

theonion.com
FAIRFAX, VA—In the wake of Wednesday’s mass shooting that left nine dead at a church in South Carolina, sources confirmed today that National Rifle Association officials had already started up with their shit about what would be an even greater injustice. “What happened in Charleston is a terrible tragedy, but what would be even worse is if we reacted to this event by passing laws infringing on our constitutional rights,” said NRA board member Charles Cotton, who, right on cue, let loose the same predictable flood of steaming horseshit about how the real threat facing Americans comes from legislators who would attempt to restrict access to firearms. “While we mourn those killed, we should never let an incident like this distract from our defense of [the fact that I myself am a pile of human waste who is fundamentally incapable of responding to the deaths of innocent people without raw, putrid sewage gushing from my mouth].” At press time, the NRA had called on Congress to honor the victims of Wednesday’s shooting by passing a law ensuring that citizens can protect themselves by carrying semi-automatic weapons into all houses of worship.

Getting back to the Dolezal thing, an interesting paper showed up today in Genetics:

Characterizing race/ethnicity and genetic ancestry for 100,000 subjects in the Genetic Epidemiology Research on Adult Health and Aging (GERA) cohort

It’s just a tiny part of a large effort exploiting the Kaiser collection of DNA samples in medical research. But among the things that caught my eye is Table 2 -

- where out of 2679 people who self-declared as African-American or Black, 8 of them showed no detectable sub-Saharan ancestry.

Not quite sure what to make of that, (were the participants just being troublemakers?) but it goes to show that someone may declare they are this-or-that and it just not be true.
