Stupidest Man on the Internet: Dylann Storm “Root” Is “A Typical Leftist”

Surpassingly stupid
Wingnuts • Views: 58,130

DERPThe raving right wing dolt known as the Stupidest Man on the Internet, Jim Hoft, thoughtfully informs his equally doltish readers that alleged mass murderer Dylann Storm Roof (Hoft calls him “Root” in the title and throughout his post; that why he’s the SMOTI) is…

A TYPICAL LEFTIST!

Mass murdered [sic] Dylann Storm Root [sic] is sounding more and more like a typical disgruntled leftist.

Dylann Storm Root [sic] after his arrest Thursday in North Carolina.

In a weird twist, nearly half of Dylann Storm Root’s [sic] friends on Facebook were African-Americans.

Dylann Storm Root [sic] talked to friends about burning the American flag.

He also had a recent history of making violent threats.

This is standard behavior for the Hoft-thing; he always tries to label mass murderers as leftists, no matter how obvious it is that they’re right wing extremists, racists and white supremacists.

Hoft’s irrefutable evidence that Dylann “Root” is a typical leftist? He had black friends! And he talked about burning an American flag! (Which isn’t surprising for a white supremacist who had a license plate labeled “Confederate States of America.”)

Even for the astoundingly dumb Jim Hoft, this is surpassingly dumb. There’s a whole lot of idiocy about this issue on right wing blogs today, but you’ll be hard-pressed to find anything more idiotic.

No True Right Wing Scotsman of course. But you’re right. Every mass murderer and hell everyone who has ever done anything bad ever is a leftist in Jim’s eyes. He’s trying to push that because many lefties and yes myself included think you have the constitutional right to burn a flag means we burn the flag ourselves. That’s total horseshit and Hoft fucking knows it but because he’s a lying shithead, he’ll push this and the lie that Dylann Roof is a leftist because conservatives have to convince themselves that they’re not part of any problems in our society.

I think we have a case study in the healing power of ‘and’ here. Hoft is being both stupid and evil here. The stupidity is self-evident. The evil lies in the denial that this shooting is absolutely a product of US right wing nut job ideology.

I think just evil. Stupid implies he doesn’t know better. He knows full well that that Roof was anything but a lefty and that believing flag burning is constitutional does not equate with burning the flag yourself and the fact that the reason why Dylann Roof hated the American flag was because it put down the yes, right wing Confederacy.

It’s Juneteenth. A very important day in the African-American community. We all celebrate Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation and understandably so but this is the day that 150 years ago today that the abolishment of slavery was announced to the slaves of Texas and moreover how slaves found out that they were finally free after generations of oppression.

Mine is a most peaceable disposition. My wishes are: a humble cottage with a thatched roof, but a good bed, good food, the freshest milk and butter, flowers before my window, and a few fine trees before my door; and if God wants to make my happiness complete, he will grant me the joy of seeing some six or seven of my enemies hanging from those trees. Before death I shall, moved in my heart, forgive them all the wrong they did me in their lifetime. One must, it is true, forgive one’s enemies— but not before they have been hanged.

the bond was set as a symbolic measure only on the one count of possession of a weapon during a felony. on the 9 murder charges the judge has no authority to set bond, he was automatically going to be remanded on those charges. The whole proceeding was just weird.

Apparently his roommate wasn’t the only one. A quote from one of his neighbors:

Roof had a deadpan sense of humor, according to the neighbor, Christon Scriven, the New York Daily News reported. It was that sense of humor that kept Scriven from taking the threats seriously. Scriven, who is black, said that Roof had moved close to a trailer park just a couple of months ago. “He flat out told us he was going to do this stuff,” Scriven said. “He’s weird. You don’t know when to take him seriously and when not to.”

Exactly one week before the shooting, Roof said “he was looking to kill a bunch of people on Wednesday” at the College of Charleston, a state university in downtown Charleston with about 12,000 students, according to Scriven.

I think they only really deny bond when they seriously worry about someone being a flight risk but my memory could be wrong. I do have to agree though.

It is surprising that bond would be set for a homicide case such as this one.

it’s been my experience that most courts deny bond for capitol murder cases, or when release of defendant would be a threat to public safety.

As to fear of flight, the court is suppose to set bond at an amount that would ensure appearance in court.

Doubt that anyone will come up with the premium to bond Dylann Root out, given restrictions of the PATRIOT act. There would be several federal agencies interested in the source of such money.

Definitely possible too. I don’t think being religious or irreligious has any bearing here and I trust that we agree on that. He was clearly motivated by the fact that this was an African-American church.

See my #86. That complicates this on a state level. The DOJ will more or less be forced to do the charges.

I think standing DOJ policy is to not file charges if the state is already filing charges, and, frankly, South Carolina is probably going to seek the death penalty, so what’s the point of the feds filing charges? At the very least, they’re wait until South Carolina concludes their case.

Great read, but also some paragraphs about the confederate flag and more:

Charleston and the Age of Obama

South Carolina has undergone enormous changes in the decades since Jim Crow, but it is hard to ignore the setting of this rampage, the atmosphere. Seven years ago, as Obama was campaigning in South Carolina, the Times columnist Bob Herbert visited the state, encountering the Confederate flag flying on the grounds of the State Capitol building and, nearby, a statue of Benjamin (Pitchfork Ben) Tillman, a Reconstruction-era governor and senator, who defended white supremacy and the lynching of African-Americans, saying, “We disenfranchised as many as we could.”

“We of the South have never recognized the right of the negro to govern white men, and we never will,” Tillman said, from the floor of the U.S. Senate. “We have never believed him to be the equal of the white man, and we will not submit to his gratifying his lust on our wives and daughters without lynching him.”

….

Nearly all of South Carolina was in mourning Thursday. Flags were at half-mast. Except the Confederate flag, of course, which flew high outside the building where Tillman still stands and the laws of the state are written.

105 HappyWarrior  Jun 19, 2015 12:00:27pm

Hearing that some of the murdered’s family members have said they forgive him. That takes a lot. I could never do that. And I’ll be honest as much as I oppose the DP, it would be tested there and my capacity to forgive would be for sure especially not even two days after ti happened.

Obama is a flawed President, but his sense of historical perspective is well developed. He gives every sign of believing that his most important role in the American history of race was his election in November, 2008, and, nearly as important, his reëlection, four years later. For millions of Americans, that election was an inspiration. But, for some untold number of others, it remains a source of tremendous resentment, a kind of threat that is capable, in some, of arousing the basest prejudices.
Yes, indeed.

Dual sovereignty doctrine, someone can be prosecuted in both federal and state court for the same crime without it being a violation of double jeopardy.

However, the feds usually decline to prosecute following a not guilty verdict in state court unless there’s a clear miscarriage of justice.

And of course there’s this.

Skrewdriver is considered pretty much legendary on the white-power music scene. I even have to say that Ian Stuart - the chief songwriter - was a genuinely talented musician within the punk genre (which was they started off as back in ‘79).

The lyrics are reprehensible - but the music is solid, thus making it frighteningly seductive.

The distinction is that the Germans had good sense, after getting their asses kicked and then occupied, to accept de-Nazification and outlaw any symbols of that evil regime. By contrast, the South never had it properly beaten into their heads that their beliefs were wrong and so have gone forward with a wounded pride that can apparently only be salved by arguing that they didn’t really lose.

Maybe if they’d be “de-Southernized” - analogous to de-Nazification in post-WWII Germany - for a couple of decades after the end of the Civil War, things today might be different.

Twenty years later a bunch of the same leaders were back in control and instituting Jim Crow and justifying themselves via the Lost Cause Mythology. The racist attitude is also not solely stuck in The South. It’s just that the war’s symbols gave them some obvious rallying points. Which they immediately went to when things got real with the Civil Rights Movement and federally driven desegregation got going in the 50s and 60s. Thus the state flags suddenly starting to acquire that symbolism in that time period as a reaction and way to thumb their noses at the oncoming changes they were going to heavily resist.

243 Nyet  Jun 19, 2015 1:16:35pm
My Visit to a German Heritage Society

Recently I went to a German Heritage society meeting. The prospect of German beer, sausages, and sauerkraut, some of my gastronomic favorites too good to resist.

However, when I got there, I was somewhat apprehensive to see many Swastikas. A German Heritage Society member, spying my unease came up speak to me. He told me that his society was not antiSemitic, and its slogan was “Heritage Not Hate.” I pointed out the Swastikas which festooned the room on banners and flags and mentioned gently that it was the symbol used by Adolf Hilter and his Nazi’s.

He told me that that was 40 years ago and that’s not what it meant to him. He also went on a long explanation that the Swastika had an origin going thousands of years. It was in Greek art, “I liked Greek art, didn’t I, he asked. I had to admit that I did like Greek art and was a student of classical history. Also, I had nothing against Indian art which made use of the symbol.
He said that antiGerman people are trying to distort the meaning of the Swastika. Then he said, solemnly, referring to the Neo-Nazi’s, “We should have never let those people distort the meaning of the symbol.”

While I was there I did see some Tshirts which had a fairly frank expression of anti-Semitism. I was told that they didn’t suppress individual members beliefs, but that it wasn’t the official view of the organization.

Then came out their star speaker, a Jewish member of their organization, who they seemed very proud of and he was brought to talk to me.

He said that the American Flag and the British flag flew over anti-Semitism also, and he asked, “Was I against the American flag or a British flag.” Well I rather like the American flag, and have no thoughts about the British. I was also told there was a lot of Anti-Semitism in France, Britain, and the United States in the 1930’s and 1940’s. Probably there were many anti-Semitic persons in the American army in World War II. I had to admit that was true. “In fact, he pointed out there is anti-Semitism today. Yes, I had to admit that also. He then proceeded to tell me of various violent acts committed against Jewish persons in America in the last 100 years. He then discussed how anti-Semitism was manifest in much of the history of Western Civilization. “Why,” he cried out, “Was Germany singled out for criticism.?”

He then proceed to denounce those criticizing the Swastika as hypocrites and persons trying to tear down Germany with guilt and who really had some other agenda.

He then proceeded to say that if we were against the Swastika, we would have to be against Shakespeare. Wasn’t he anti-Semitic?

Well, what do you think? I am still not comfortable with the Swastika. Am I antiGerman?

Any honest appraisal of this shooting includes the simple observation that extreme right wing ideology was important to the shooter, and is overwhelmingly likely to be the motive for the murders.

Since uncomfortable facts are to be avoided by conservatives at all costs, this is naturally passed off as “an accident”.

Probably because they would have to confront the fact that some of their colleagues (e.g., at Fox News) are practitioners of it.

We are told by the right that if we bring up stronger gun control, we are politicizing tragedy. But how about when they argue more guns? Is that not the same?

A guest on Hannity said that we don’t need less guns, we need to stop teaching hatred. But they don’t want to talk about that either! They can’t even acknowledge or say it out loud that Roof was a racist and this was motivated by hate.

I mean it, do they ever really listen to themselves?!?

Here’s a brilliant comment from a NYT commenter dailykos.com

Gfagan PA 10 hours ago
I am Irish. For many years in my native land the Rev. Ian Paisley spouted bigoted hatred about Catholics in Northern Ireland, but then claimed innocence when some militant sectarian group massacred Catholics. Speech was not murder, he said. He would never condone killing, he said. Then he went right back to feeding the attitudes that spawned the killing. Few were fooled.

We should not be fooled in America today.

In this country the “mainstream” right-wing has made an industry of demonizing African-Americans as “thugs” and criminals - just look at the divergence in tone between the recent coverage of Ferguson or Baltimore and the (mostly white) biker massacre in Waco, TX. For decades, white America has been told that black Americans are lazy leeches, dependent on hand-outs funded by your hard-earned taxes to bankroll their immoral lifestyles.

The first black president was greeted by the right not only with diehard obstructionism but a chorus of color-coded abuse (“lazy,” “food-stamp president” etc) and questions about his very American-ness: he was “not one of us,” a foreigner adhering to a foreign religion who has no right to be president.

The siren song of racial hate relentlessly put out by the “mainstream” right finds echo in the gunshots that rang out in Charleston.

Rightists will, of course, deny the connection, the way Paisley did. But we are not fooled.

Her: we talked yesterday, did you call the number?
Me: who are you with? What company?
Her: missouri city county process server
Me: city or county? Can’t be both
Her: stutter… did you call?
Me: I googled the number to see that it is a scam and attempted extortion. I then made a report to the FTC. Would you like to try again to identify yourself?
Her: *click*

That was kinda fun.

Here’s how Erick Erickson ends his latest post about the Charleston shooting:

A society that looks at a 65 year old male Olympian and, with a straight face, declares him a her and “a new normal” cannot have a conversation about mental health or evil because that society no longer distinguishes normal from crazy and evil from good. Our American society has a mental illness — overwhelming narcissism and delusion — and so cannot recognize what crazy or evil looks like.

It’s like after the Loughner shooting, they want to convince themselves that there’s absolutely no negative consequences to the steaming piles of shit that issue forth from their gobs. They want to believe that when they tell people the country’s going to hell, it’s all because of minorities, and a race war is inevitable, nobody is listening and thinking to themselves that the answer is to kill the minorities before that race war begins.

It’s rather like they were quick to disavow Tim McVeigh after years of screeching endlessly about how “evil” the federal government is.

What the hell???

Just got back in from doing some errands, etc. and saw this. Out in Whitehall, that’s just about 3 miles up Main street from me.

By the way, strange day in the city. I got flipped off three times this afternoon. A new record. I swear, I was driving fast and in fact two of the times I was actually trying to help.

One by a guy that used a clearly marked right turn lane to try to get past me before an intersection, but the light changed and he got stuck there. He must have been in a big hurry. So, he comes storming around me on in the left lane a little further down, window down, screaming and flipping me off.

Another guy crossing on a green light had just stepped into the crosswalk, and not paying attention, so I tooted my horn to let him know he was going to walk into the side of my car…I was all of ten-twenty feet away from him and would have locked up my brakes had he kept going, nothing I could do but hit the horn. I saw him flip me off in my rear view mirror.

And then the royal one. A guy was in the far left lane on High Street just south of downtown and wanted to get into the far right to go into a gas station. I saw him, flashed my lights and gave him a little horn tap to let him know he could come over. Yeah, as he was turning…he flipped me off. I almost made a right turn at the next intersection to go back and ask him what the hell that was for, I let him over. Then I figured if he was that much an ass, best leave him alone. And since all this happened on one run over about a total of ten miles out and back I figured it was just not my day to be out.

Must be a full moon or something. And yes, I almost got out of my car and kissed the ground before I put the car in the garage.

It looks good, but could you maybe add some kind of responsive menu so that on smaller screens there isn’t the need for so much swiping? It’s not so bad on my iPad Mini, but on my iPod Touch I’m forced to scroll, and scroll, and scroll…

Maybe you could limit the displayed articles on the front page to 10-15 with a “view more” button or whatever, and the menu could give me the option to jump down to the featured pages, recent, pages, RSS feed, etc? I know you already have a button to jump down to the featured pages, but it totally bypasses the LGF pages, create a page, user’s guide and RSS feeds, so if I’m not familiar with LGF I won’t even realize those things exist. Ditto for the recent pages because they’re so far down and the ads push them down even farther. Also, on individual articles (whenever you design those pages) people are gonna need an easy way to get back to home and all the other sections.

One more thing: A “back to top” options, again because of all the scrolling. If the responsive nav is omnipresent and can slide out or drop down as in the link above, then that would solve the swiping issues.

FWIW, I rarely surf the web for any length of time on my iPad Mini and I pretty much never do it on my iPod Touch, primarily because there just aren’t that many well-designed responsive sites and I quickly get very frustrated very with constantly having to tap-pinch-swipe.

I remember when I was in college a few years back. Me, another native, and a freshman who was from out of state were driving down to Richmond for something and we stopped by in a small town half way between Fairfax and Richmond and the freshman guy was just amazed at how common CSA flags. I also think the CSA leadership got off too easily. However, it isn’t easy to suggest something clearly better, even with hindsight.

The basic problem was that the intransigence of Confederate leaders was not diminished enough by the loss of the war, and they were in a position to simply outwait the military occupation. Something like Hayes-Tilden was most likely inevitable.

I was only 6 and had no idea there was any negative connotation to it. To this day if you say General Lee the first thing I think of is that orange charger. I still want one(sans the flag, but the horn that plays dixie maybe), I actually have a modern Dodge charger which I have no complaints about, but it just isn’t the same.

Yeah. It’s faster and it doesn’t fly pff the road in corners and has gas mileage in the double digits.

Oh yeah I agree and understand. It was a tough situation. What infuriates me about the Hayes-Tilden election is how African-Americans were basically sold out so the Republicans could win the election. I actually have to believe that President Grant doesn’t get enough credit. His administration went after the KKK admirably.

“Drug-fueled”? Have I missed them saying he had any drugs in his system at the time of apprehension? Or are they saying that racism is a drug, because I’m totally in agreement with that.

I have seen, at least in comment sections, the same bullshit as made the rounds after Sandy Hook—about “massive amounts of psychotropic drugs in his system.” Haven’t read a single word about it from any reliable (or even not so reliable) source.

I also find it interesting (read bizarre, yet not unexpected) that in recent police murders of young black men, within a day or so the media are publishing every detail of not only the victim’s past, but also of every family member. (Hell, in the case of Tamir Rice, the very first stories were about his parents’ records.)

Yet, with Roof, we’ve had some words from his uncle, tales from the roommate and former classmates, but only the very sketchiest information about his background—he dropped out of school in tenth grade, had two arrests this year, and?? No other info. Haven’t even seen his parents names mentioned. (At least, I haven’t seen any.) Very strange.

I’m not suggesting there should be doxxing, but that seems like pretty basic information for the media to find out while they’re blabbing philosophically about all other superfluous crap.

Yeah that makes me sick too. The other talking point I am tired is “Why won’t we talk about black murders in “large city here”” And I am also sick of hearing about why “we never discuss black on black crime.” Chris Hayes actually did a great spoof showing how absurd that is by talking about white on white crime.

Where the hell was that sympathy to the victims’ families. I mean his father is the one who violated the law and got him the gun and I definitely think he was raised in a racist environment. Roof isn’t a child. I mean to some extent I do feel bad for his family knowing that they have a murderer for a son or brother (don’t know if he has siblings which I think speaks even more to how little about this guy the media has given us so far which is amazing really) but it seems to me that his parents were definitely aware of his racist views and got him a firearm anyhow.

I see Lindsey Graham eventually acknowledged that this was a racist attack.

Lindsey Graham, who is the Senator from South Carolina, initially suggested the persecution of Christians was as likely a reason for the shootings as racism. “There are real people out there that are organized to kill people based on race. This guy is just whacked out. But it’s 2015, there are people out there looking for Christians to kill them.” On Friday, however, while visiting Charleston, Graham had made a shift. He told The New York Times’ Ashley Parker, “the only reason these people are dead is because they’re black.”

Assuming Rand Paul is correct that the tax code has 70,000 pages, I fail to see how a flat tax would allow this to be made significantly simpler.

Progressive tax rates can be expressed on one page. Perhaps that bloats to 10 pages in bureaucrat-speak.

So 70,000 pages goes to 69,990 pages. Big whoop. Meanwhile the rest of the tax code remains, since it is mainly concerned with defining what counts as income. There would be some significant simplifications if there would be fewer categories of income. But this is irrelevant.

A flat tax is proposed by plutocrats to lower their tax rates and make everyone else pay more. That’s all that needs to be known about that stupid idea.

Chris Rock says the same thing. It seems like this judge was talking about there being good and bad people in any race, but was too dumb to know that white people can’t use that word, so got himself in trouble.

Ignore the word for a second. Any Judge that throws out trite racial categorical simplisms like that shouldn’t be on the bench. It betrays a woeful lack of critical thinking skills.

I agree. When we moved up here to the East Coast my son was still in high school. We lived in a primarily black neighborhood, so his school and 99% of his friends were black. Some of his closer friends told him it was okay with them if he used that word, but he told them no because he wasn’t okay with it. Too much pain & violence associated with its history.

re: #417 EPR-radar

The #FairTax (it’s “Fair” like “Right to Work” means you have a right to a job) is even more regressive since it taxes consumption, not income. A better name for the “FairTax” would be Sumptuary Laws.

Oddly enough, even though I grew up in Texas, as a small child I learned it as “catch a tiger by the toe” because that’s how my parents taught it to me. I was quite taken aback when at age 5 or 6 I heard the other version from another kid. I never used it because I already knew it was a bad word (I have no recollection of who informed me of that) my parents wouldn’y appreciate hearing come out of my mouth.

Oh yeah I agree and understand. It was a tough situation. What infuriates me about the Hayes-Tilden election is how African-Americans were basically sold out so the Republicans could win the election. I actually have to believe that President Grant doesn’t get enough credit. His administration went after the KKK admirably.

That’s WHY he is rated as a “bad” president. He tried to help and did a good job of it. Then it was thrown away as the GOP’s money grubbing core surfaced.

I still have my childhood copy. Speaking of Sambo, I met my wife, who’s African-American, in the early eighties while she was waitressing during the graveyard shift at an all day and night diner in Tucson called Sambo’s (now Chaffin’s Diner) where pancakes were served 24-7. Illustrations from the book lined the walls. Far from being a racist joint, it was a pretty happening place with a crazy clientele that ranged from cops to dealers, hobos to lawyers (forgive the redundancies).
