LYRICS
When I was younger,
my daddy told me I would never
Never amount to nothing special.
He’d come at me from every angle, he’d say..
You’re the last thing I wanted,
the last thing I need,
how am I going to answer when my friends tell me
My son, was kissing boys in the street

He’d try to change me,
say I’m embarrassing my country,
How could I do this to my family,
do I wanna grow up being lonely,
he’d say We have worked for our money,
we’ve put you in school,
is this how you repay us,
do you think this is cool
My son, stop kissing boys in the street

Now that I’m older,
my daddy’s hearts a little warmer
But he still won’t hug me like my brother,
and he still won’t kiss me like my mother,
he’d say… You are part of this family,
I made you myself,
but the way that you act isn’t good for your health,
My son, stop kissing boys in the street

My daddy’s dying, but he’s finally realized I’m not lying
We sit in silence but we’re smiling,
because for once we are not fighting,
he’d say… There was no way of knowing,
cos all I was taught is men only love women,
but now I’m not sure
My son, keep kissing boys in the street
My son, keep kissing boys in the street
When I’m gone, keep kissing boys in the street

The waxing crescent moon, Venus and Jupiter are stunning tonight. I snapped a poor photo a few minutes ago.

Someone in Germany needs to learn how to identify objects better.

NEUSS, Germany, June 19 (UPI) — German police said a helicopter crew searching for a reported “lifeless body” rescued a figure clad in “red pants” and “blue outerwear” — a Papa Smurf balloon.

We’re too cloudy tonight, but at dark over the last month you can see Venus, Jupiter, and Saturn. And now the moon. I bought myself a ten inch Dobsonian telescope, and I pull it out at night when I can. I also ask anyone who is outside if they would like to see the planets.

Edit: I also really just want to knock on people’s doors. Ten inches, even though I’m in a suburb, is big enough to see stripes on Jupiter and gaps between Saturn and its rings.

You need to come down here and knock on my door to planet gaze while my neighbor guy is out doing his thing handing out bags of hot, perfectly seasoned popcorn. That would be a perfect evening.

I think the verses of that song are really strong (and I can relate), but the ‘stop kissing boys in the street’ chorus is just kind of klunky and forced. I really wanted to like that song - it’s getting a ton of airtime in the Twin Cities - but to me it feels like it wants to be ‘Same Love’ 2015.

I just don’t understand how you can look at Charleston and pretend it wasn’t racially motived.

I mean, what the fuck is there to gain by denying this? If anything, having GOP POTUS candidates jump in and deny this just makes the problem that much worse!

All the screaming from conservatives that they aren’t, at best, clueless morons about race relations is utterly undercut by their supposedly electable moderates lying about the motives behind this massacre.

Nobody’s perfect, but a lot of us whites here are willing to accept that we’ve benefited from white privilege, and that we have been racist and can still do racist things.

These people do not want to look at themselves that way. They do not want to know what they would see.

33 BeachDem  Jun 19, 2015 9:40:35pm

I’ll preface this comment by saying that I’m all for removing that fucking flag from the State House and I’m glad it finally might happen.

But I’m kind of disgusted that it took what happened in Charleston to get the dolts in Columbia to do something. And the outpouring of admiration for Bannon (R) saying he was going to sponsor a bill is laughable.

Finally a Republican will do something right(we don’t really have enough Democrats to accomplish much of anything) but only because it affects him personally.

“I had a friend die Wednesday night for no reason other than he was a black man. Senator Pinckney was an incredible human being. I don’t want to talk politics but I’m going to introduce the bill for that reason.”

Last year, Vincent Sheheen (running for governor) was joined by the Democratic candidate for lieutenant governor Bakari Sellers and several mayors Wednesday in calling for the removal of the flag. Sheheen becomes the most prominent political voice to call for the flag’s removal NOTE—Joe Riley was one of the mayors.

He was slammed by Republicans (such as Icky Nikki Haley) Haley’s deputy campaign manager Rob Godfrey called Sheheen’s move, about a month before the Nov. 4 election, “desperate and irresponsible.”

Sellers introduced a bill in 2007, his first year in office, to remove the Confederate flag from the State House grounds, but it died in committee.

“Ask the coaches of the major sports teams, ask the presidential candidates who show up here every four years what they think about the Confederate flag on the front lawn of the State House, and we know the answers,” Sheheen said. “I want South Carolina to be celebrated not for the state that left America, but for the best state in America.”

carolinalive.com
thestate.com

Sheheen and Sellers lost and lost badly to Haley and McMaster. It wasn’t just the flag issue for sure, but this sudden burst of righteousness from the right is kind of nauseating. Again I’ll say, I will be glad to see the flag come down, but it is disgusting that this is what it took to make it happen.

St. Paul is having our ‘GermanFest’ celebration this weekend on the grounds of an old brewery that’s been turned into housing and support space for artists. I’m just a block away so I walked over this evening for a brat and ice cream (no beer) and checked out the exhibits, food vendors, and a Beatles cover band (Hey, they got their start in Germany).

One of the ‘Fest’ activities is local tours. This neighorhood is incredibly historic (Pierre ‘Pig’s Eye’ Parrant is the first person listed on my house’s title abstract), so it was kind of fun to see one of the tours stop twice (at the corner and then mid block near my garage) to narrate historical points. I know a little bit about the this neighborhood, but there are locals with incredibly deep knowledge of the history here, so I may try to take the tour if it’s offered on saturday or sunday.

‘Hero Dog’ award goes to a CAT: Feline Tara gets decorated for THAT heroic moment she saved six-year-old autistic boy from being attacked by a canine

For the first time, a Los Angeles animal shelter’s Hero Dog award has gone to a cat.

In May 2014, Tara the cat fought off a dog that attacked her four-year-old autistic owner as he rode his bicycle in the driveway of the family’s Bakersfield home.

Tara body-slammed Scrappy, an eight-month-old male Labrador-Chow mix that lived next door, when the dog got out of his yard, ran for Jeremy Triantafilo, grabbed his leg and started shaking from side-to-side.

After confronting the dog, Tara then chased him back toward his home

The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in Los Angeles gave its annual award to the fearsome feline.

Nine tragedies—ugh. Talk about misusing the word tragedy. No, Markie-Mark—they were PEOPLE and they were BLACK PEOPLE who were killed for being BLACK and to create terror all around, you dickwit. He’s such a bullshit artist. Secondly, he should and I bet he does know as your state’s former governor that the flag only really started being part of the state capitol in the 50’s and 60’s as a direct response to the Civil Rights Movement. It’s not about heritage at all. It was about bigots like Sanford’s ideological ancestors trying to intimidate blacks and their progressive white allies from doing Civil Rights work. Also doesn’t quite understand the contractual agreements that are the terms of service and usage rules. Even if the First Amendment applied to corporations like Twitter, by agreeing to the TOS and rules you’re basically agreeing to a limitation of those FA rights.

Similarly, when you sign a contract to be a public school teacher, you agree to restrictions on what you can do or say in the classroom in exchange for employment. Ohio science teacher John Freshwater never quite got that idea through his thick skull.

BREAKING: ‘Paper tiger’ blogger preps libel suit, fails to file in MO court

To the surprise of absolutely no one, the world’s pre-eminent Award Winning JournalistTM — OK, he’s a blogger — Chuck C. Johnson has once again announced a lawsuit and failed to file it in court.
On Thursday, Johnson told The Daily Caller that he would be filing a $66 million dollar libel suit against gawker.com within the hour. However, it had not been filed as of the close of the business day on Friday.

Johnson’s penchant for threatening lawsuits and failing to follow through has inspired a website, chuckcjohnson.info, which includes a counter for the days since his last threat, and a list of incidents.

In March, Johnson announced he and his lawyer had filed a petition with the Missouri supreme court to gain access to the juvenile records of Michael Brown, the African-American man shot dead by a police officer in Ferguson, MO.

It was filed in May, two months later.

I forgot to ask you and no biggie if you didn’t but did you listen to CCJ’s voice again and notice if he came off mononish? Frankly I don’t care if he’s on the spectrum or not but I think if he is, that gives me some insight into why he acts the way he does. It’s no excuse of course. Being on the spectrum does not give you the right to use Twitter to harass people and threaten them as he did with Deray.

64 goddamnedfrank  Jun 19, 2015 11:20:44pm

The Confederate flag was gone from South Carolina for almost 100 years. The State House passed a resolution to bring it back on March 16, 1962, ten months after the first Freedom Ride. They brought it back officially in direct response and in opposition to the Civil Rights Movement. It had nothing whatsoever to do pride or heritage, it was raised again to instill fear.

Yeah, I listened to his interview with @jason Calacanis, and his voice is not monotonal. It sounds quite natural, and in this video appearance, CCJ is less goofy and more sane-looking than when he’s interviewed from his basement home office. What he says is still off the rails, however.

He told Calacanis that, when he was a yoot, his parents took him to two experts: one said he was autistic, and the other said he wasn’t. He admits to having a lack of empathy, but I wonder about that, too. I think he just has a shitty personality.

He seems to me to have the worst response of anyone so far though Graham and Perry’s responses were pretty bad too.

And fucking Sanford is from Charleston—it’s his district.

He truly is the dimmest bulb on the planet—and also the most self-centered asshole around—he truly only cares about his own little orbit—he could give Trump a run for his money on egoism, except Trump has a bigger mouth. Remember, before the whole Appalachian Trail story, this asswipe was considered presidential material by Republicans.

Why is he being so belligerent about this? Roof planned it, carried it out, left one survivor to convey his message, then fled the scene. It’s pretty clear he intended to induce fear in the local AA community, and maybe expected to escape to repeat the action somewhere else.

I don’t think I ever asked you but what do you teach out of curiosity? We always had a good number of Chinese exchange students at GMU while I was there. I didn’t get to know any of them since most of them were enrolled in our business or economics program and I was a history major but I am thinking about your experiences as an American teaching in China and then thinking about their experiences as Chinese students in America. oh okay. That sounds interesting especially Western culture. As a former English minor, I am genuinely curious who you’re having them read because I imagine someone like Orwell would be off limits. I’m honestly relieved that there hasn’t been any rumors about Roof having Asper’ger’s or anything like that. Lanza, Rodger, and I think Holmes too were ASD diagnosed. I mean I know it shouldn’t matter but I always do worry a little about stigmas going to people on the spectrum when a mass shooter is revealed to have ASD. Disclosing my ASD diagnosis has always been a point of great internal debate whether that’s for a job interview or a date. I’ve come to the conclusion that I can be pretty open about it since most people are cool. And I think by being open about it, they’ll see that we’re individuals.

No, he seems to, admits the KKK qualifies. He’s just being as pedantic as he can be, arguing entirely that there’s an organizational component to true terrorism that Roof doesn’t meet.

It’s nonsense. There’s nothing in the formal definition of terrorism that requires it be carried out by an organized group. He’s just insisting on the inclusion of his own additional criteria to the definition and arguing on that basis alone. It’s really weird.

Like I said, obstinate.

I still can’t get over the many Republican politicians and I already know why mind you but that just can’t bring themselves to say “This was an act motivated by racism.” Said earlier, it seems that Republicans are too chicken shit ever to say that blacks still suffer from racism in this country (the rare times they do, it’s some cheap bit about how Democrats are the real racists because of entitlement programs) and secondly they have a tendency to go apeshit the second someone points out that massacres like these are easily aided by guns and the easy access to guns. I think Perry even accused the WH of “overreacting.”

The other thing that continues to just frustrate me are the lengths the right will go to blame anything but racism or easy access to guns. You had Erick Erickson actually bringing up Caitlyn Jenner. I mean the issue is staring at you in the face and wearing patches for two modern white separatist regimes and has the license holder for a society founded to protect slavery and yes it is a racist symbol, it’s not heritage at all. I also notice right wingers cry about this being “politicized” but notice they’re only directing that those of us who rightfully point out the role of race and that he should have never been able to have access to a gun with his pending felony charges. They don’t direct that at those who blame transgendered people, video games, music (though I am hearing that he liked white power music which is a disgusting industry), abortion, etc.

We wear the mask that grins and lies,
It hides our cheeks and shades our eyes,—
This debt we pay to human guile;
With torn and bleeding hearts we smile,
And mouth with myriad subtleties.

Why should the world be over-wise,
In counting all our tears and sighs?
Nay, let them only see us, while
We wear the mask.

We smile, but, O great Christ, our cries
To thee from tortured souls arise.
We sing, but oh the clay is vile
Beneath our feet, and long the mile;
But let the world dream otherwise,
We wear the mask!

Always thought this Dunbar poem was beautiful.

Well, of course I never learned anything about it in school—that’s a given on most subjects—but I did read up a lot on South Africa and the history that lead up to the situation there. I was, what, 14? when Hendrik Verwoerd was assassinated, and that got my attention.

I kept my eye on things in South Africa and Rhodesia for many years, not because I was an Apartheid fanboy, but because I saw it as a looming bloodbath that I didn’t want to contemplate. I wasn’t as worried as I should have been, probably, about the Cold War (until Ronnie Ray-Gun came along) because I saw the Soviet Union as too conservative to do anything too rash, and I thought the US government was sane. (Silly me.)

When peace broke out in South Africa, it was as close to a miracle as I’ve seen. It may be silly, but it gives me a little bit of hope for things here. Sure, there a lot of racist assholes, but I honestly think they’re fewer than they used to be while at the same time becoming worse, due to the right-wing media and the internet and so on.

I hope a sudden sea change like what happened in South Africa is possible here. An awful lot of people are much less racist than they were 50 or 60 years ago, even as the bittereinders have gotten more virulent. I think it’s possible that there may be more violence, and worse violence, and that’s too bad, but it’s my hope that this will make public opinion finally turn against the jerkwads.

Or, a Republican could win in 2016 and turn this into Ian Smith’s Rhodesia—I suppose that’s equally likely.

It’s bad enough that the South Carolina State House has the Beauregard Flag flying over it, but the official state flag of Mississippi actually incorporates it:

While the state flag of Georgia actually is, fucking literally, the fucking Stars and Bars! (with a little extra crap in the middle):

Why do I feel I know him? Because if there’s something special about the social media age, it’s the fact that we can interact with people from other countries in revolutionary new ways.

The other day on Twitter, I met a very angry American who was absolutely convinced that “white genocide” is happening in South Africa, (I’ve met more than a few Americans who buy into this myth lately) and who seemed very upset with me for being a white South African who wasn’t currently being “genocided”.

I explained that I was a white South African and that he had been misinformed, but this man who had never left America, never mind visited South Africa, was so sold on this image of a country of oppressed whites that he wasn’t going to allow little things like “facts” and “information” get in the way of this view.

At first he adopted a patronising, almost kindly tone, and tried to explain that obviously I was a victim of government propaganda hiding the truth, but when I continued to deny that there’s a wide-spread white genocide in South Africa, he became almost frighteningly angry.

I was warned that I would be brutally raped and murdered soon. (I find it amusing that the only people who have threatened me with violence from black people have been white people.) This person also (hilariously) hinted that very soon I would be put on an actual trial by some international governing body and punished for, essentially, the crime of being a white traitor.

A sick and deranged man went and prayed for an hour with the congregants in an historically black church and then, for reasons that we don’t fully understand murdered nine innocent souls,” Cruz said of Dylann Roof, who was charged with nine counts of murder. The nine victims were shot Wednesday night inside Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, the South’s oldest African American church.

After listening to the reactions for the past two days, the right-wing mindset can be boiled down to two simple statements.

1. 12-year old Tamir Rice is considered a thug who was man enough -and deserved - to be shot down in broad daylight,
2. 21-year old Dylann Roof is a confused kid who didn’t know any better, and deserves sympathy.

There’s a sacred bond between guest and host that is ancient in all human civilizations. For a host to kill a guest, or a guest to kill a host was an atrocity that was met with the most severe of punishments.

I remember that Idi Amin converted to Islam because no Muslim can turn another away when asked to be a host. It’s why Amin died in Saudi Arabia.

An old friend of mine is Charleston now and posted some photos on Facebook of the community coming together to mourn and honor the victims at the church. Many, many flowers and tributes have been left by people of all colors.

Dylann Roof’s message may turn out to be the opposite of what he intended. Instead of dividing Charleston, he may have united it.

The thing is, I suspect he acts like a relatively normal person until the conversation tuns to his favorite subjects. During his interview in Jason Calacanis’ studio, CCJ was much more “normal” and reasonable than when Milo interviewed him over Google meetup (or whatever it’s called now) and CCJ was in his home office. During the Milo interview, he acted goofy and emotional.

Even so, he told Jason the same stuff he told Milo, pretty much. It’s those roving packs of Social Justice Warriors that got him off Twitter, Twitter’s bosses are beholden to Teh libruls and SJWs, and also Twitter is cozy with the government, and they’re all trying to keep him from doing jurnalizm.

The Wall Street Journal reported that Roof’s family had grown concerned over the last two months as his racist views started to boil over. “He apparently told people that he was involved in groups, racist groups,” said a woman who identified herself as the mother of Roof’s former stepmother. “He turned into a loner in the last couple of years and no one knew why. He just fell off the grid somehow.”

Roof’s uncle Charles Cowles told Reuters that Roof’s father, Ben, gave the alleged killer a .45 caliber pistol for his birthday earlier this year. Police have not disclosed what sort of firearm was used in the shootings.

The ‘family grew concerned’ yet Daddy decided to give him a gun for his birthday.

Anyone who thinks that White and black people look as different as we do on the outside, but are somehow magically the same on the inside, is delusional. How could our faces, skin, hair, and body structure all be different, but our brains be exactly the same? This is the nonsense we are led to believe.

Negroes have lower Iqs, lower impulse control, and higher testosterone levels in generals. These three things alone are a recipe for violent behavior. If a scientist publishes a paper on the differences between the races in Western Europe or Americans, he can expect to lose his job. […]Nazism[edit]
Further information: Nazi symbolism, Strafgesetzbuch § 86a and Odalism

Flag of the Volksdeutsche 7th SS Volunteer Mountain Division Prinz Eugen
The rendition of the Odal rune with “wings” or “feet” (serifs) was the emblem of “ethnic Germans” (Volksdeutsche) of the 7th SS Volunteer Mountain Division Prinz Eugen operating during World War II in the Nazi Germany-sponsored Independent State of Croatia. This rendition has been used by the Neo-Nazi Wiking-Jugend in Germany, and in South Africa by the Anglo-Afrikaner Bond, the nationalist, and heavily subjugated, Boer minority organization Boeremag, and the Blanke Bevrydingsbeweging.[4] This particular rendition has no historical significance outside of Nazi Germany. However, many Odinists use both versions interchangeably without any relation to National Socialism or racialism.
Another version with arrows on the end was used by the 23rd SS Volunteer Panzer Grenadier Division Nederland.

They keep on saying that and they never offer any proof. They want history? How about the fact that most of the Confederate states seceded while Buchanan was president. That the forces of what became the CSA fired on US Army property. That their constitutions all explicitly protected slavery. That it was about the right to secede is utter bullshit. The CSA itself attempted to put down secession when secession came to the CSA.

Extension of slavery into the territories is what the war was about. A constitutional amendment protecting slavery where it already existed had passed both houses of congress and would undoubtedly have been ratified. That wasn’t good enough for them. They had to expand slavery wherever they could.

Domain Registration & Privacy Protection 101

Regarding the whois stuff, as Charles pointed out, the anonymized contact info is that of the company providing the privacy protection, in this case Privacy Protect. The company that provides the privacy protection service is separate from the registrar, however in some cases may be owned by the same company.

For example Domains By Proxy is owned by Bob Parsons, the owner of GoDaddy, so in that case the registrar & privacy provider are the same even though they have separate company names & websites.

Just providing the info for anyone who doesn’t know how it works. So in the case of the site in question, the registrar is reg.ru LLC, the privacy protection provider is Privacy Protection Service INC d/b/a PrivacyProtect.org, and the actual registrant of the site could be anyone anywhere.

For those who have never registered a domain name, all you really need is a debit/credit card or PayPal (or other service, depending on your location) with which to pay for the registration and access to a working email address. You can use any name & address you wish when you fill out the “registrant” part—it need not be legit as the registrar doesn’t attempt to verify your identity.

BTW, when renewal time comes up, you can even call them up and tell them you’re the web developer and you want to pay the renewal fee for your client using your comapny credit card or whatever. As long as you have the account’s username & password (and in the case of GoDaddy, the call-in PIN), then they’ll accept it. I know this because I’ve done it dozens of times.

The only way a fake registrant or contact info would ever be discovered is if law enforcement requested the identity (example here of what PrivacyProtect requires) or if the person who registered the domain forgets the login credentials for the account and no longer has access to the email account used to register the domain.

I’m watching “Making of the Mob” right now, the Lucky Luciano episode.

I hadn’t realized that Luciano, Meyer Lansky and Bugsy Siegel had been together since their early adolescence. And now they’ve reached the part of the story where they hook up with Arnold Rothstein in Chicago…

Somehow, I’d thought Jewish gangsters were late additions to the Italian mob, I hadn’t realized how integral they were to its ascent from local street thugs to huge, organized, national enterprise. Not sure if ethnic pride or ethnic shame is more appropriate… (but now I understand why Luciano was my dad’s “favorite” gangster)

I would agree given that it was registered back in February. Had it been closer to the attack in Charleston, I’d be more skeptical.

If Roof did indeed register it himself then it’s going to look really bad for him, like he’d been planning it for months.

Yes, registered in February, with Roof’s name and address. It has to be him.

Romney is part of the Executive Class, those who sit in boardrooms during the day. I know this will surprise exactly no one here, but I was catching up on my SPLC reading this morning and noticed some of the racists had already started blaming it on ZIonists by Thursday:

It didn’t take long for VNN users to turn to Jews as the source of the massacre.

“This all seems too scripted,” wrote “ToneDeaf.” “Possibly Zionists are behind this ?? Who else would benefit from an all out civil war?” […]

I’m not sure how they think Zionists would benefit from (another) U.S. civil war, but, hey, if these people had any critical thinking skills they probably wouldn’t be knuckle-dragging racists hanging out at white supremacist web sites.

The Mob’s history during the war is interesting. Luciano helped out the Allies and Mussolini’s regime had been very hostile to the Mafia but at the same time Vito Genovese who has also been mentioned on the show apparently had an anti-Mussolini journalist murdered. Not sure if it was before or during the war.

Not unofficial at all. Totally official. The FBI, at the request of the War Department, cut a deal with him that his Sicilian cousins provided a *LOT* of operational assistance to OSS agents behind enemy lines — safe houses, transportation, papers, local information gathering, etc. — in return for which Luciano was pardoned for any and all crimes committed before 1942. Including a number of murders.

The Mafia also had their own reasons for being less than fond of Mussolini’s government, so they were pretty enthusiastic in their assistance.

Freepers have settled on the NO TRUE CONSERVATIVE reaction to the racist manifesto from Dylann Roof:

Anti-American flagburner murders 9 Christians. Has more in common with Bill Ayres than Bull Connor.

Certainly no conservative.

Has anyone determined this guy’s religion?

A fan of skin heads and the KKK….. the legacy of the democrat party

I read his standard liberal talking points. Same words and sentiments. Hate for minorities, using them to fill an agenda, anyi-American flag stomping, pining for the Klan…

He’s the liberal posterboy.

Every action has an equal an opposite reaction.
I blame this on Obama/Holder. They have set race relations back 50 years or more.

I found it interesting that there was no reference to religion or God. That entire concept didn’t go into his stupid manafesto at all, either positive, negative, or just in passing.

Was he just part of the social atheism that’s taken over our young people today?

Let’s see…Weather Underground (ayers/dorn et al) wanting to start a race war; Charlie Manson (wanting to start a race war)
This punk…wanting to start a race war.
What’s the common denominator?

He’s a millennial. Born in the Clinton era of “some lies are good lies”

All his life, told that self-respect is not earned; that awards do not come from achievements.

Fed a steady diet of left wing lies on TV, internet, and schools.

Told that 9/11 was an ‘inside job”, that corporations want to kill the oceans, and that Christians are bigots who believe in a “magic sky daddy”

Small wonder that killing nine people at a Bible study seemed to him to be something other than the monstrous act that it is.

I’m talking about his thoughs regarding the conduct of some minority groups, not about his atrocious conduct driven by his reaction to that conduct of others.

Many very sane Americans are very angry and frustrated when we watch Fusgesson and Baltimore go up in flames despite the billions we have poured into those communities.

But we are way too good as people to take out our frustration on 9 innocents by killing them.
