Dylann Storm Roof’s Website Discovered, With White Supremacist Manifesto and Photos

A neo-Confederate white supremacist inspired by the Council of Conservative Citizens
Crime • Views: 87,624

A website registered in February in the name of “Dylan Roof” (with his correct address) has been discovered, containing a white supremacist manifesto and dozens of photographs of Roof posing with guns and Confederate flags, visiting a Confederate soldier’s graveyard and other Confederate landmarks, and drawing white power symbols, neo-Nazi runes and the numbers “1488” in the sand on a South Carolina beach.

“14” refers to the infamous “14 words” coined by white nationalist David Lane, that have become a motto for neo-Nazis and racists throughout America:

“We must secure the existence of our people and a future for White Children.”

And “88” refers to the eighth letter of the alphabet, H, with two of them together standing for “Heil Hitler.”

The manifesto is here, but since it’s been publicized you may not be able to get through to the site; it’s apparently a low budget shared server and it’s bogging down badly under the heavy traffic. (Here it is at the Internet Archive.)

In any case, the manifesto is a grotesquely racist screed, filled with hatred toward blacks and Hispanics and obsessed with the very common conservative meme of “black on white crime.”

Roof credits the white supremacist group called the Council of Conservative Citizens with “awakening” him to “black on white crime,” following the shooting death of Trayvon Martin. And that’s an interesting parallel to Gateway Pundit Jim Hoft, who has also used the CCC website as a source numerous times for his racist blog posts.

The website of the Council of Conservative Citizens is apparently offline today, and that’s probably not just a coincidence.

I was struck by how similar the views in this manifesto are to the racist comments tweeted continuously by Chuck C. Johnson (when he still had a Twitter account) — and sure enough, I got a tweet today containing a screenshot of Chuck posting about the manifesto on Facebook, saying he found it “disturbing, yet engaging.”

I’ll conclude by pointing out that so many conservative pundits and Fox News talking heads were desperately trying to pretend there was some question about whether Roof’s horrible crime was racially motivated; now we know for certain that it was. (Not that there was really much doubt anyway, given his statements at the time.)

The right thing for these people to do now would be to eat some crow and apologize for trying to deny the obvious racism of this alleged killer. But I’m not going to hold my breath.

The New York Times has verified that this website was registered to Dylann Roof at his address in February of this year, and that it was last modified shortly before the shootings:

The website was first registered on Feb. 9 to a Dylann Roof in Eastover, S.C. The next day, the registration information was intentionally masked. The site was discovered by two Twitter users, @henrykrinkle and @EMQuangel, who used a tool to find any domain names registered to Mr. Roof. The registration information was then verified by The New York Times.

The site hosts a cache of photos of Mr. Roof as well as the manifesto. According to web server logs, the manifesto was last modified at 4:44 p.m. Eastern time on Wednesday, the day of the Charleston shootings. “At the time of writing I am in a great hurry,” it says.

Strangely enough, I think a lot of this could be ratcheted down if there were a concerted effort by the GOP to simply acknowledge that racism exists and that they would be better served to not pander to it (if not outright inciting it). Charleston County Magistrate James B. Gosnell began Friday’s bond hearing for mass-murderer Dylann Roof by declaring that the killer’s family members were victims as well.

At least he did not repeat an opinion that he offered in another proceeding a dozen years ago.

“There are four kinds of people in this world—black people, white people, red necks, and n—-rs,” Gosnell advised a black defendant in a November 6, 2003 bond reduction hearing.

That. That right there. The Southern Baptist conservatives seem to have this immense, simmering rage inside of them that bleeds out into everything they do. And this has formed the core of the news diet that Fox spews out - it is akin to Richard Nixon’s same inferiority/superiority complex.

I probably shouldn’t say this, but my observation has been that the guys who are most exercised about blacks (or whoever they’re down on) “raping our women” are systematically the very guys who couldn’t get laid in a women’s prison with a suitcase full of pardons.

Yeah, amongst other products. The climate in the agrarian south lent itself to cash crops that required large amounts of unskilled manual labor. That, couple with patterns of settlement - the South was colonized during a wave of Scots-Irish borderlander immigration. These immigrants were poor, formerly the debt-peons of the “lairds” in their homelands, and brought with them the burning anger from that socioeconomic system.

Like many abused, they mostly wanted to turn the system upside-down, with themselves on the top as the abusers. Which they did. They also brought with them the hair-trigger violence and outsized emphasis on “personal honor” from the Old Country, which you see in the parking lots around cheap-ass roadhouse bars across the Deep South, where the descendants of these immigrants batter each other with Lucky Lager bottles over minor slights to the mudflaps on Ford pickup trucks.

The economies of the South were primarily based on agriculture —cotton and tobacco being main crops. And prior to mechanization (cotton gin, for example), these “industries” were entirely dependent on manual labor.

Oh definitely. Plus southern economies did not evolve. The economy of the South in 1860 was similar to what it was in 1760. That’s quite different from the North. That ultimately was their undoing.

There’s an area in the South called “the black belt”, but it didn’t get that name for having most of the black people. It’s because the soil there is very dark, very fertile, and it’s where our best agriculture was.

In the North, even before people became very citified (probably the reason people became so citified), even with very good soil there were harsh winters that made agriculture a half-the-year endeavor at best.

Yeah, amongst other products. The climate in the agrarian south lent itself to cash crops that required large amounts of unskilled manual labor. That, couple with patterns of settlement - the South was colonized during a wave of Scots-Irish borderlander immigration. These immigrants were poor, formerly the debt-peons of the “lairds” in their homelands, and brought with them the burning anger from that socioeconomic system.

Like many abused, they mostly wanted to turn the system upside-down, with themselves on the top as the abusers. Which they did. They also brought with them the hair-trigger violence and outsized emphasis on “personal honor” from the Old Country, which you see in the parking lots around cheap-ass roadhouse bars across the Deep South, where the descendants of these immigrants batter each other with Lucky Lager bottles over minor slights to the mudflaps on Ford pickup trucks.

Damn Khal, this comment and your #44 tells me you need to post up some more. I like the sense of history tied to a sense of the dark humor in it all. Good take, good reading.

Given that the article calls him a racist, murdering asshole (or words to that effect) about six times, yeah, I’d just call it coincidental. Lots of sites are registered every day.

Some strange stuff goes on with that site. “Self-aware” is the last adjective I’d apply to it in general, which is why this article shocked me. I’ve actually been a fan of it for a while, mainly for the gawking/humor value.

Oh definitely. Plus southern economies did not evolve. The economy of the South in 1860 was similar to what it was in 1760. That’s quite different from the North. That ultimately was their undoing.

Eli Whitney’s invention of the cotton gin in 1793 made short upland cotton into a viable cash crop and expanded the areas in which cotton could be grown. As others have mentioned, cotton was a very labor intensive crop, The antebellum South largely failed to industrialize because exporting cotton fiber was lucrative enough to enable it to buy in manufactured goods.

You might be interested in reading Mary Boykin Chesnut’s A Diary from Dixie. She was married to James Chesnut, Jr., United States Senator from South Carolina 1859-1861. Mr’s Chesnut was a native of South Carolina. The book is based on the diaries she kept through the war years. She is not an apologist for the South and her book provided me with some insights regarding Southern culture, attitudes and politics at the time.

And that was at the center of the liberal/conservative divide in those days. Everybody agreed that politics was for the rich, but the argument was about the legitimate ways of becoming rich. For conservatives, land ownership was the source of the only wealth that should count. “Liberals”—what we would today call “Classical Liberals” (Reaganauts, Thatcherites, etc.) thought that money made in trade or manufacturing was just as good.

The plantation owners would never accept that they could be ruled over by tradesmen (read “Jews”) or industrialists, and since the southern economy was built on agriculture, there was really no way that the agrarian nobility could be unseated from control—without a war, anyway.

Brannon is the politician that is going to try to pass a bill on taking the flag down in SC.

Nothing worse than a turn coat or someone that deceived them. At that point someone who said they had their interests and then goes against them is more the enemy than the politician they know is opposed.

It all goes into some of what Khal Wimpo posted in #57. I’ve seen bloody fights between brothers or father and son with some of the same type of people. Over some stupid thinking and bravado.

If Lindsey Graham had said the flag has to go, the shootings were all racist and the south needs to clean up it’s act, an hour later he’d be getting some interesting messages and visitors. And threats.

Here in Tx these flags are rather common - not that many display them, they don’t, but they are around enough and have been forever that they’re pretty much invisible to a lot of people. Case in point, someone here at the park put about a 6’ pole in the ground and hung one at their pad several weeks ago. I expressed extreme disgust by it to my dog-walking friend who was actually bewildered by my response. Not because she shares any beliefs in what it represents, but because it simply has no meaning to her at all. Once I explained why I felt the way I do she was ohhhh, I see. You are right, it is revolting. These two words, Dixie Swastika, say it all.

He’s astonished and let down that hundreds of like-minded people he’d met on-line at his white supremecist message boards… didn’t take his action as a sign to simultaneously rise up and do the same in a hundreds of other towns.

I just came back to say that this massacre at the church in Charleston took me by surprise a bit. What with the recent (and future planned) armed demonstrations outside mosques, I thought for sure Muslim worshipers would be the first targets of someone like Roof.

I guess I underestimated the depth & intensity of anti-Black racism in this country. It’s some seriously nasty, toxic stuff. These assholes are our ISIS.

I remember a conservative telling me that Ron Paul was a lefty because of his FP views. I guess someone had never heard of the America First movement in the years leading up to WWII. They somehow want to accuse us on the left of both being anti Southern, anti- “states rights” yet they also want ot blame us for the CSA. i pointed it out earlier that yes there were a lot of Democrats that pushed secession but there was also a lot of Democratic unionists too including many generals like Hancock, Benjamin Butler, and many others. And also that Douglas, Lincoln’s famous rival and debate opponent offered his strong support to the Union and Lincoln after Sumter.

From the Sandy Hook aftermath—I traced that one from start to finish:

Premise: Adam Lanza was taking the anti-psychotic drug, Fanapt, which apparently has side-effects that lead to violence.

The story began in the NY Daily News which claimed that the information came from Lanza’s uncle, Jonathan Lanza. Then New York Magazine reported it, attributing it to the Daily News article. Then the race was on with many others picking it up and then several doing in-depth articles about the drug itself.

HOWEVER, the Daily News took down the section about the uncle, and several other sources pointed out the possibility that the Daily News got punked by someone named Jonathan Lee Riches, who is known for perpetrating hoaxes and suing people and also did something similar after the Aurora shootings.

But it’s out there and the wingers are running with it and the meme has become that guns are not the issue—anti-psychotic drugs are.

They’re just so fucking predictable. (And I just noticed, reviewing some of my notes after Sandy Hook, that the AP actually did an in-depth article/interview with the salon where Adam Lanza had his hair cut several years earlier. Now THAT’S Pulitzer stuff, my friend.

Then wondering how he managed to take self timed photos like that’s some kind of rocket science. Then switching back and being amazed that he was able to write down his hatred lucidly at all, like he didn’t just crib all those ideas form other hate sites.

Because too much of that manifesto is shit they’ve found themselves saying at one time or another. Like suggesting that what we’ve told about slavery are “myth and lies,” using the statistics about how many people owned slaves or testimonials about “happy slaves” to argue that slavery wasn’t all that bad.

The Republican platform hasn’t advocated environmental responsibility since Nixon and even then Nixon didn’t think much of environmentalism. I believe it was Ehrlichman’s pet project.

When the Democrats were getting their asses kicked and seen as being too left wing in the 80’s, there was a movement led by eventual President Clinton to bring the party to the center. You haven’t seen any such thing with the Republican party leaders. In fact you’ve seen them grow more right wing since Obama’s two wins. Republican candidates who would have been fringe in the Bush years are easy bets to win Republican primaries.

I would actually disagree with you there. I don’t put Lee and Jackson in the same place I do Forrest but it is true that captured African-American soldiers were sent into slavery by the Confederates. This book, No Bone Unturned, is about the wrangling that went on over the body of Kennewick Man. It’s primarily a book about the career of Doug Owsley, a forensic anthropologist who’s now the head of physical anthropology ay the Smithsonian (Kennewick Man was one of his his first big cases and it turned his life upside down).

It’s a fascinating read. It’s 340 pages and I blew through them in in a couple of evenings—even bought a hardcopy and sent it to a friend who lives out west.

Looks like an interesting read. I’m actually reading a biography of a Union civil war general right now- Meagher. I think Lee just couldn’t bring himself to admit that his state was in the wrong. I think he wrongly looked over that as a military officer he took an oath to the United States not the state of Virginia and remember I am a Virginian. I do think Lee is overly romanticized and I attribute a lot of that to the Lost Cause written by subordinates who worshiped him.

It all comes down to who writes history. But yes Scott should be remembered today as should George Thomas. I think the Lee mythology is aided by that he had subordinates who worshiped him and his connections to Washington. Another fact that I think a lot of people do not know is every single state sent volunteers to defend the Union.

can attest to that, my shiba inu licked one (they’re usually out during our monsoon season) and we were able to save him by essentially washing and wiping his mouth free of the toxins. But the toxins give them a fever that can essentially elevate their internal temps killing them.

and they just look like any other frogs

I have read some of the sickest things on the internet since the shooting and while it is disheartening I am seeing lots of pushback from people who are fed up with people making excuses for racists. I am very glad to see this and we need more of it. I know I have been beating on more than a few of the morans in denial at my other hangouts (unfortunately infested with tons of ‘libertarian’ tech weenies).
