Shit like that. Folks by the thousands on Twitter are parroting “Lost Cause” ideology as we speak, in the year 2015.

I guess we know where Fox Sunday will be going.

The other yakfests have people like Joe Riley (Charleston mayor), Eugene Robinson (from SC), Tim Scott, Jim Clyburn, Sherrilyn Ifill, and Jelani Cobb along with their usual suspects.

Fox? Going for the all-white gang: Rick Perry, Cardinal Donald Wuerl and the roundtable with Karl Rove, Peter Baker , Kathleen Parker and Evan Bayh (does anyone, including his mother, care what Evan Bayh has to say about anything? I thought not.) Guess they won’t be talking about Charleston—oh please, with that group, please don’t let them talk about Charleston.

CNN has scored the YOOGE Cooo of Donald Trump—don’t know who else.

I had a bowl cut in elementary school. I hated it. In middle school, I went with the “parted-down-the-middle” look, which Beavis told Butt-head *in front of the band Anthrax* “You look like a dick!” So I went with a buzz-cut for a couple of years until sometime in high school (when I truly realized I was my own person forever) when I just let the goddamned hair go.

I have friends that call me Hair Farmer. From buzz-cut I can get my hair more than half-way down my back in about four to five years time.

I attribute this to genetics I got from my mom. Despite excellent researching from my dad, there is a small percentage of my mom’s lineage that we simply cannot find any information. My dad is convinced it’s Plains Indians lineage and why my mother and I could grow such long hair. I dunno.

So, I wake up and read here at LGF that the CofCC (the heirs of the infamous White Citizens Councils of the 60s) has hauled down their website.

No doubt, they’re scrubbing it with an unending supply of Brillo pads and a 55-gallon drum of bleach.

I’m thinking a lot of the folks on the far-right are in full-on panic mode right about now, much like how we saw after the OKC bombing. Back then, of course, the internet wasn’t nearly as ubiquitous as it is now, but I still remember that a lot of the more hardcore RWNJ’s shut their pieholes after that atrocity.

There is a difference between people who want to celebrate their history and heritage and people who promote white supremacy and do not shy from using intimidation, threats and even violence to promote their views. They sometimes use the same symbols.

There is a distinction between individuals who fought for the Stars and Bars out of a sincere but misguided sense of the justice of ther cause, and cynical, exploitative leaders who use it to express their views of white supremacy and Confederate revisionism.

Which is why the symbol should never be associated with any governmental body.

Roan Garcia-Quintana said the group, the Council of Conservative Citizens, “supports Caucasian heritage” but denied that it is “racist.”

“Is it racist to be proud of your own heritage? Is it racist to want to keep your own heritage pure?” Garcia-Quintana said in an interview

So when he speaks of “pure” Caucasian heritage, does he mean Irish, German, Italian, Swedish, Greek, Russian, French? If various kinds of Europeans mix and blend, is that “pure”?

According to the Southern Poverty Law Center, Garcia-Quintana does not consider himself Latino, but a descendant of the Spaniards who settled Cuba.

re: #75 allegro

Cilantro Vegetable Soup: never tried it pureed before, but I think it might work. Its been years since I’ve made this, but it impressed a person that used to teach gourmet cooking…

One bunch freshly chopped cilantro
One bag of frozen veggies
A clove of garlic
Rice/Beans/Lentils
Soup base (vegetable, chicken or turkey)
Bay leaves

Combine everything but the garlic, simmer that separately…add the garlic and remove the bay leaves before serving. You can add chicken too, if its shredded.

Another REALLY good soup that can be served hot or cold is Avgolemono, hot for a nice dinner soup, cold for a morning wake-up

4 cups chicken broth
1/4 cup uncooked orzo (or rice or pastina)
Salt and pepper to taste
3 eggs
3 tablespoons lemon juice

1. In a large saucepan, bring the broth to a boil.
2. Add the orzo, rice, or pastina and cook until tender but still al dente, about 7 minutes (20, if using rice). Season with the salt and pepper and reduce heat to low; simmer.
3. Meanwhile, in a medium bowl, whisk together the eggs and lemon juice until smooth.
4. Ladle about 1 cup of the hot broth into the egg-and-lemon mixture, then whisk to combine.
5. Add the mixture back to the simmering saucepan. Stir just until the soup becomes opaque and thickens as the eggs cook, 1 to 2 minutes. Add more salt and pepper, if desired, and serve.

You can go that way with lentil soups as well. Most of the recipes I have recommend blending some of it as a way to get a thicker texture. You can just go all the way.

88 stpaulbear  Jun 21, 2015 8:05:13am

Russell Moore, president of the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention, calls for the flag to come down.

The Confederate States of America was not simply about limited government and local autonomy; the Confederate States of America was constitutionally committed to the continuation, with protections of law, to a great evil. The moral enormity of the slavery question is one still viscerally felt today, especially by the descendants of those who were enslaved and persecuted.

The Confederate Battle Flag may mean many things, but with those things it represents a defiance against abolition and against civil rights. The symbol was used to enslave the little brothers and sisters of Jesus, to bomb little girls in church buildings, to terrorize preachers of the gospel and their families with burning crosses on front lawns by night.

And South Carolina went with the battle flag instead of the Palmetto Flag or Bonnie Blue Flag when they did the redesign because they *wanted* a readily identified and understood racist symbol as a sign of defiance and intimidation. Doesn’t work (unless you’re trying to be stealthy) if you use a symbol that no one associates with the racist cause without doing more research.

Pretty much any gazpacho soup can be pureed. And since they’re traditionally served cold, you can get creative with ingredients.

Butternut squash soup is great too.

111 ObserverArt  Jun 21, 2015 8:48:11am

So, I decided to watch Meet The Press wanting to see what some would be saying about Charleston. I also knew something would piss me off.

So, Chuckles runs some video on guns and their impact on the user now in prison for killing someone and addressing a camera in an empty room. Both young men were very moved about what they had done and how it has effected them. Both seemed truly sorry and remorseful, more or less calling themselves stupid for thinking guns gave them identity and power missing in their backgrounds. Both were youngish Black men.

Then he talks to the panel and Eugene Robinson biting his tongue a bit points out that both guys in the video were black and Chuckles dances around it and says that wasn’t their intention to show it was a Black issue.

Later when he goes to check on feedback to the program it must have been obvious many viewers were like WTF with the only Blacks being shown about gun problems. Again Chuck says it wasn’t their intention.

Then he goes back to the panel and talks about race issues and the president having a hard time discussing the issues. When he gets back to Robinson, Robinson gets a dig in that it might help if they didn’t show just blacks with guns and discussing race. Ouch!

Really MTP and Chuckles Todd…you had the time to show two guys in your ‘touching” bit on how these guys feel today and you couldn’t think to have a White guy and a Black guy? You couldn’t figure out, especially this weekend that would be a problem. Then pull the damn spot.

You want to know why we have race problems in this country? There you go. Too busy picking fleas out of each others heads to see the problems right there in their own production department. And with their dimwit host.

And oh yeah. Mike Huckleberrybee was on too. I’m not going to bother typing much about that jerk, other than to point out that he said absolutely no one in this country is giving any support to Roof and what he did. Get out more asshole. And if you liberals are going to get all high and mighty about the Pope mentioning climate issues, then you also need to follow what he says about abortion.

As a nation we are growing more and more dense and more into our own individual thinking and can’t see there are other people.

This could be made without the fish as a vegetable soup.Red Pepper and Red Snapper Soup
1-1/4 lbs fresh or frozen skinless red snapper, orange roughy or other firm-fleshed fish
2-1/4 cups coarsely chopped red sweet peppers (3 medium)
1 cup chopped shallots or onion
2 tablespoons olive oil
3 14 oz cans reduced sodium chicken broth (5-1/4 cups total)
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
1/8 teaspoon ground red pepper
1/2 cup snipped fresh Italian parsley

Thaw fish, if frozen. Rinse fish, pat dry. Cut fish into 1 inch pieces; set aside. In a large sauce pan or Dutch oven cook sweet peppers and shallots in hot oil, over medium heat for 5 minutes. Carefully add 1 can of the broth. Bring to boiling; reduce heat. Simmer covered for 20 minutes or until peppers are very tender. Remove from heat, cool slightly. Pour half the sweet pepper mixture into a blender container. Cover and blend until nearly smooth. Repeat with remaining mixture. Return puree to sauce pan. Add remaining 2 cans chicken broth, salt, black and red pepper. Bring to boiling; reduce heat. Add fish. Simmer covered 5 minutes until fish flakes when tested with fork. Stir once or twice. Stir in snipped parsley.

156 makeitstop  Jun 21, 2015 10:11:54am

Country artist Jonathan Byrd weighs in with an epic rant on Facebook:

It’s time to disturb the peace again. Here’s a more recent declaration:

“Take down the flag. Take it down now.

Put it in a museum. Inscribe beneath it the years 1861-2015. Move forward. Abandon this charlatanism. Drive out this cult of death and chains. Save your lovely souls. Move forward. Do it now.” - Ta-Nahisi Coates

It doesn’t threaten your heritage. You take off your hat for a lady. You clean the shit off your boots before you walk into a church. It’s just a matter of respect. Admit that your perspective might feel right and be wrong. Take it down, South Carolina. Just for today. A few days if you can stand it. Then put it back up if you must. I know how it is. I feel the pressure not to say anything, not to get involved. Who am I? I’m just a singer with no Grammies or gold records. I should be happy with what I have and not roil the waters.

I may reach ten thousand people with this post. Maybe thirty thousand.

And there just may be one of my fans who is outraged, one guy who can’t humble himself enough to hear anyone else’s truth without getting red in the face and typing his opinion against me. One guy who will never come to another Jonathan Byrd show. Or maybe there are five. Or ten.

But you know what? Fuck that guy. Fuck all those guys. Let them hang their rebel flags from their prefab sheds where they hide their liquor and their porn from their wives. We don’t owe them anything. We don’t owe the past anything. We owe the future everything. Take it down.

I know you won’t. But I hope I’m wrong just like I didn’t think we’d ever elect a black president. Step into the future. Take it down.

For a country artist, this is taking a major stand. Good for him. Go read it all, it’s wonderful.

Most welcome. I’m currently taking my breaks from the real world in Fallout: New Vegas. I bought the complete edition on Steam a couple of weeks ago. Playing and modding Elder Scrolls games took up so much time that I was able to pick up complete versions of FO3 and FO:NV for less than forty bucks when I finally got around to them.

A couple of more playthroughs in FO:NV and I’ll start my mod for it. Modding takes my mind off of everything.

Chuck Todd ✔@chucktodd

The gun violence video we aired on @meetthepress has upset some and I felt those comments deserved a response: nbcnews.to

Well, there is why the NBC News ‘send a response’ site isn’t working.

I tried to send one a couple times and keeps saying I need a valid email. My two main ones must not be good enough. No, now it is obvious they are getting hammered. It is probably slow or they turned it off.

Fucking Todd can’t be any more clueless. He is crying about how the piece on guns is getting slammed and trying to defend by saying they need to offended everyone.

What a lame response. To be expected. I guess I wasn’t too far off in one of my lines though. I told them Todd exhibits all the warmth of a cold greasy taco left in a Buffalo NY snow drift in early January.

I also told them how they could fix the show. Cancel it. It jumped the shark when they put David Gregory in the spot and it is not ever coming back.

DEAN: I don’t like it, but that’s a matter for the people of South Carolina to settle, not me.

WOODRUFF: So, you wouldn’t urge them to change it?

DEAN: I just said, I don’t like it, but it’s not for somebody from out of the state to fix that problem. That’s an in-state problem.

I sure hope all the people that normally aren’t paying attention to all the stuff really going on is this country at least get to see some of this Charleston story in all its vivid color. Maybe they can use some of these larger and more covered issues to slap themselves in the face for some cold realization.

They need to realize there are two Americas. One preparing to be moving forward, the other breaking off and sliding back, willfully.

Those who do not normally pay attention might find themselves with enough time to make a jump on the forward moving one as it is slow right now. If not now, then the length of the boat ride or the swim in the gulf between the two will be getting exceedingly longer and more dangerous as time goes on.

Their choice. Take the steps to get on and go forward on one.

Or, ride the other one right on back to that same thinking they all started with. Flat earth and their world is about to go over that edge.

239 Kryptik  Jun 21, 2015 11:46:28am

I am consistently amazed and despondent at both the capacity for people to learn either nothing or the exact WRONG thing from incidents like Charleston, and the fact that the media coverage of the entire thing flat out encourages such things.

This is going to be yet another atrocity buried under bullshit, and the spirit of the Confederacy will live on wholeheartedly because the party dedicated to its memory essentially owns all the goddamn mics and cameras
