Must-See Video: John Oliver on the Plague of Online Harassment

Watch out for the rickrolls

John Oliver demonstrates again why he’s one of the best commentators on our dysfunctional society, with a great segment on the major problem of online harassment.

Part of this video deals with journalist Amanda Hess’s awful tales of harassment on Twitter, and they really are awful. No one should be targeted like she was.

But I’m at a loss to explain how someone who was a target of this kind of threatening harassment could write an article like this one, defending one of the worst cyberstalkers ever to abuse Twitter, Chuck C. Johnson.

Seriously - I just don’t get how someone who suffered the kind of threats and harassment Amanda Hess talks about in this video could say that Chuck Johnson shouldn’t have been banned from Twitter. WTF, Amanda.

True dat. Then again, when you have a self-hating gay like Milo Ylannopolous writing for Breitbart stating:

And him hitching his wagon with CCJ (who you know will put the shiv to Milo the femtosecnond he no longer has a use for him, but he’s too stupid to realize that) I’m torn between needling them to make it happen or just sit back, pop open a bottle of Stone’s Arrogant Bastard Ale and watch the carnage unfold , do both or just walk away and say fuck it all.

She’s probably pissed that Twitter whacked CCJ but her harassers were still active.

Whines about Twitter’s existence on Twitter. I guess Milo wishes we were more of a society of very rich and very poor. A healthy middle class is what allows democracy to do its thing. And kale has been being eaten for generations. And I’d still rather be a “SJW” than a whiny conservative asshole who can’t stand that he doesn’t get to pass go and collect 200 dollars anymore simply for being a conservative white male. And white guilt is still better than white denial.

Hess only seems to care about people who look like her, white women. Why else would she stealth quote a well known neo-nazi Auernheimer saying he “seems genuinely flummoxed as to how to please the network.” The target of Chuck Johnson’s targeted abuse was a black man, so she didn’t give a shit.

Harsh? Maybe, but I can’t find a single other plausible explanation for why she wrote that abysmal, intellectually dishonest think piece, other than @Slate paid her by the click.

Said it Sunday or SAturday but we constantly hear about what the CSA flag means to Southern Whites who may have had an ancestor fight for the CSA but we never hear from those African-Americans who were kept enslaved because of it. I won’t tell you that you can’t be proud of your great great grandfather for fighting with Robert E. Lee and that you can’t wear a Confederate flag on your t-shirt but keep it the hell out of way government buildings and for the love of God get over it, the CSA lost and it wasn’t a great cause.

Asking the wrong guy since I don’t want to be able to use the word. I think some white people have this delusional idea that the n-word is somehow close to cracker or whatever and they think “Hey, a black guy’s called me cracker before so why can’t I use that word?” You can’t explain to these types that cracker hasn’t been used to dehumanize white people the way the n-word has for blacks. And hell furthermore cracker like the n-word was made up by whites. They refuse to admit that during lynchings, slave punishments, etc that word was most certainly used. Cracker may not be a “nice” word for a white person but it doesn’t have the hurtful connotation and wasn’t used for generations of dehumanization and African-Americans most certainly were dehumanized for generations and hell still are in some quarters of this country.

Yeah, no. She’s way smarter than that and get’s no benefit of the doubt about this from me. She knew exactly who Auernheimer was, or at least has no excuse whatsoever for not at least having read his Wikipedia page and Twitter history before publishing her piece.

Same thing with Chuck’s history, and her choice to just gloss over his previous suspensions in favor of speculating about other, more nebulous unstated motives for his suspension. The fact is that she was writing for a libertarian tech audience, and had an agenda to sell that she knew they’d gobble up. She wanted to make it about some ridiculous perceived need for Twitter to be transparent, open and consistent with regards to its rules and account closures. When in fact there is literally zero need for Twitter to do that, to spell out the exact number of strikes everyone gets before getting the boot. And seriously, in what world are four violations of the same rule against doxing not an obviously legitimate reason for kicking someone off your service?

The white people who complain about being unable to use the N-word are racists, pure and simple. They’ve had it beaten into their thick skulls that using the word in public will get them ostracized by normal sane people, but they still REALLY want to use that word without consequences. So they complain about black rappers, trying to trick weak-minded people into thinking the situations are comparable, even though they know there’s a huge difference between a black person using the word to rob it of its power, and a white person using it to insult and demean black people.

These racist fucks are not right in the head, and they think they’re going to fool people with this transparent bullshit.

Not compleately though. I did watch a great season opener this weekend. The Star Wars Rebels Season 2 opener, “Siege of Lothal” is actually damn good for a “kids” animation. Excellent use of Darth Vader & even better use of Asoka from the previous Clone Wars show.

The more honest Confederates fled this country after they lost. It’d be nice if people who venerate the flag of the CSA were honest and stopped pretending like they love our country. Maybe that comes off harsh but these are the same people who accuse anyone who isn’t a capitalist Christian conservative of not loving America. I may not wave a flag, I may not like “patriotic” country music but my loyalty is to the country I was born in not a country formed by aristocrats who couldn’t stand that Lincoln opposed the expansion of slavery.

This may the worst week for Western civilization in a while. We may see both the criminalization of the Confederate flag and Christianity this week.

There is the Jefferson Davis Monument about 10 miles from me. Maybe I’ll swing by there, set an American and a Confederate flag on fire, see which one the patrons try and save. (or not, since I’m not in the mood to get an ass-whipping at this age). I’ve got my hunch however….

I thought it was pretty good, actually. Remains to be seen whether it will develop into “really good,” or fizzle out like too many sequels do.

Whereas Season One let the main characters dysfunction and personalities kind of develop organically through the first half of the season, this felt like they really wanted you to know how messed up these people were right off the bat. It just annoyed me that it was all back story and pathos without any real reason (the crime) to pull it together until the last three minutes or so.

These racists fucks are not right in the head, and they think they’re going to fool people with this transparent bullshit.

I can laugh if I’m called cracker or honkey because the white people haven’t been subject to slavery, injustice, etc by black people using that word.

But Cracker was a term used by white people to describe white sharecroppers. It put them on the same level as black sharecroppers (which, in the pantheon of the southern agricultural economy, they were). No black man ever called a white man a Cracker unless he wanted to die. Last August James O’Keefe entered the US illegally wearing an Osama Bin Laden costume while his assistants took a video of the stunt. Then they put it up on You Tube. Not surprisingly that video of O’Keefe illegally crossing the border caught the attention of US Customs who frowns on that sort of thing. Today while reentering the US O’Keefe was detained and discovered to his dismay his stunt got him placed on a US Customs watch list, and he’ll remain on that watch list having crossed the border illegally. O’Keefe starts off with a pompous comment about just wait until they see what an important journalist they’re dealing with! Then wishing the ACLU would intervene on his behalf.

My Dad is good at nagging. And bitching. As much as I love him, I tune him out sometimes or I’d go crazy.

Wait, what? You went to the Post Office on Saturday, I take it. Did you leave the house on Sunday and pull it out of your pocket?

OK - I’ve got it sussed out. The new front page design is now live.

Looks good, Charles.

You can already see conservatives digging in hard on this, and the NRO wouldn’t have put that out there unless this was explicitly the narrative Republicans were now backing, painting those uppity black people as “race baiters.” Nevermind that none of the victims from the Charleston shooting have even been buried yet, white conservatives simply aren’t going to change.

Nikki Haley and Lindsey Graham can make all these milquetoast calls to do the civilized thing and take the Confederate flag down, the odds of it actually coming down remain slim. They’re slim because Republicans are already lining up in opposition, in defiance to basic decency, while throwing temper tantrums about activists who confront the kind of structural racism and white angst that inspired the attack and tried to then make the coverage of it about anything other than racial revanchism & hatred.

Nope, didn’t leave the House Sunday.

Well, to go to my car to get something, but that was 20 ft away from the front door of the apartment.

Then you know where it most probably is. Why didn’t you call the PO today?

So are the chances good tomorrow that the court keeps ACA and rules in favor of SSM?

Found it.

It fell into a drawer I don’t remember opening.

I have a major stress problem. I put so much pressure on myself, and feel so much shame for not doing as well as my friends that I am constantly one problem away from breakdown. Not to mention being prone to depression.

192 austin_blue  Jun 22, 2015 9:38:27pm

Rescinded, with apologies.

re: #191 The War TARDIS

Years ago after visiting a food store and arriving home, my wallet was missing. I returned to the parking lot where I’d parked, and there it lay. Had fallen out of my left hip pocket as I entered my car. Nothing missing. So I began carrying it in a front pocket. Years later, I gave up carrying a wallet at all. Instead, I bundle cards etc with a rubber band and carry it in a front pocket.

All this open mockery and harrassment of Milo PROVES that the LGF community hates gay people, and is actively trying to drive gay people out of journalism. There can literally be no other possible reason for their vitriol.

Want more proof? Someone sent a syringe to Milo by mail. Was it from users of Little Green Footballs? WHO KNOWS? All I know is they have continually harrassed Milo for months, just because he’s a gay man. Don’t ask me for evidence; that’s harrassment. And I won’t be dignifying any replies to this post with a response, because you don’t give Evil equal time. When you make a holocaust documentary, do you give time to holocaust deniers, to be “fair”? No, you don’t!

The LGF community hates and harrasses gay people. This is fact. Ignore their “No, we just disagree with him” lies. Until they admit that one of their side sent the syringe, and maybe dump the tainted and toxic “LGF” label, all we can do is spread the word that Little Green Footballs is a website forum dedicated to hatred and harrasment of gay people. The syringe in the mail proved it.

Disagree with Milo? You just hate gays.
Disagree with Anita Sarkeesian? You just hate women.

What a beautifully simple Black & White world we live in…

Wait a sec…

Milo is gay?

I had no idea.

Does it change how I think of him?

Nope.

He’s still a fucking idiot.
