I’ll be convinced when Haley and the rest of her party abandon the principles that the flag represents. Let’s have no more talk about blocking federal officials who enforce national gun laws or the Affordable Care Act. Let’s not ever again rally armed people to the defense of some freeloading crank in Nevada. Let’s leave the Bureau of Land Management guys alone.

How can anyone claiming to be an American citizen describe the US flag as a symbol of the Left? 13 stripes, 50 stars — the symbolism is as clear as the nose on your face.

Unless he’s making the connection that the Left = the Union and the Right = the Confederacy, in which case he means the Right has already lost the war.

just one caveat… they all didn’t hate black people, they just didn’t see them as people. They were property, pets, children, lesser things. As such, they treated them that way, some kicked their dogs, others were blithely benign. Then when emancipation became the law of the land and they had to be treated as people, then they hated what they represented and were a constant reminder of what they had “lost”.

Is this twisted and sick? It damn sure is, but then again, that’s part of the problem. A good many of these godly old Christian Southerners never accepted that these were people and based on how we’ve essentially touched a nerve with the symbolism tied into and with the flag, you can see that this is still evident today.

Now do all Southerners feel this way, no… no they don’t. Unfortunately, the majority of folks voting keep electing people into office that do. Those folks, entrenched as they are, continue to act and behave and even worse, legislate as if this is still in effect. Punishing the people for their very existence.

There is something at the baseline of what we happen to call our civilization where there are some folks relatively low on the ladder of whatever mechanism that is used to keep score that are miserable, unhappy souls whose only approach to life appears to entail making sure that there’s somebody who has it worse than them.

A sad damn way to live a life.

So, it looks like WalMart will stop selling Confederate merchandise:

Walmart, the country’s largest retailer, will remove all Confederate flag merchandise from its stores, the company told CNN Monday.

That is a Global Entry card and that X is put there whenever you answer in the affirmative any question on the re-entry kiosk. I’ve had that put on my printout for declaring I was bringing in food (British chocolate, because American chocolate sucks).

It’s there solely to prevent you from walking out without seeing a customs agent.

I wouldn’t put it past the drama queen to have done it on purpose. So don’t get your hopes up he is on a watch list. If he was, CBP would have probably revoked his Global Entry access.

If you wish to display a Confederate flag privately as a celebration of your family history & heritage or just out of personal conviction, then I do not automatically have a problem with that.

I might have a problem depending whether the context is meant to be threatening or intimidating, but I do not advocate outlawing or banning the Confederate flag as such, as some people seem to think is the case.

But I do not think that any official or governmental body should display it outside a museum.

A lot of the 90s and 00s was spent on giving big-screen treatments or sequels to titles from the 60s and 70s, and now it’s time for Hollywood to do the same for the 80s and 90s.

I don’t believe it will happen. They’ll make a big song and dance about taking it down, but when the public attention has waned, they’ll quietly drop all talk about it and it will remain. Or they’ll do as they did in 2000, finding some way to take it down from that pole and continue to let it fly somewhere else. There is, after all, a reason they put a 2/3 vote requirement on any vote to take it down and put a padlock on the pole.

Ouch indeed! I used to get lower back pain when I was younger (30s - 40s) but not much now. I switched to a firmer mattress, which helped a lot. If you drive or sit a lot, a pillow for your lower back helps, too.

Sciatica, thankfully, is something I’m not prone to. I have no idea what to do for it, except rest if you can.

Walking helps, too.

Ok, I’m off work today and I’m sorry for the heavy subject so early in the morning, but I had this in my head and I had to share.

Yesterday a relative of mine shared that Walmart Confederacy story via a post of mine on FB. One of her white coworkers or friend or family member (not quite sure, but she is married to a white man, so it could have been a relation) responded with the whole “Southern Pride” meme. Now, normally I don’t like to derail another person thread on FB or social media, but with the events of past week, I felt the need to say something to this woman. I pointed out all the things we’ve discussed this past week, threw in some Ta-Nehisi Coates links for good measure.

Then I guess cause I was calling her on her BS she started throwing up some Conservative talking points on the “myths” and lies about the Confederacy and then had to nerve to say I was the ignorant one, cause excuse me for ya know…facts.

Then she threw up this bit of commentary and I knew it was time to give up this discussion with this woman.

I wasnt referring to you as ignorant. I was referring to the qoute saying that “a negro is not equal to a white man” is ignorant. No one person is better than another. The Confederate flag is associated with racism. That was not its intention. Read the attachment above. The civil war wasn’t about slavery. Freeing the slaves was a bi-product of losing the war. As the northern states had slaves too. The civil war started because the south wanted economic independence. It was a war over power and greed. The north really didnt want to give up their slaves. I can attach that one too if you like. :-)

I finally just gave up cause I didn’t want to continue to threadjack my fam. But I find myself in the age of Obama and approaching 40 that I’m tired and done with to move some folk Black or White, especially on social media. Its just not worth the time or effort to try to reach a grown ass person to challenge their world view. I’m as emotional as the next person and yes I see defend some things based on emotions & sentiment, but as a scientist when confronted with facts, I listen and I try to re-evaluate my emotional defense. People like the woman I mentioned are just not worth my time when I don’t know them personally and I can just ignore or block them anyway.

I am only 27, but I messed up my back pretty bad playing football during gym class when I was high school (it was “touch” football, as in we played touch football when there was a gym teacher looking, otherwise it was tackle). I got completely blind sided while throwing a pass and I couldn’t even walk for a couple minutes after that. Every once and awhile it flares it again.

A lot of things are going to change, but I don’t think some of the GOP planners realize it. In particular, the 2016 presidential candidate is (probably) not going to be black, but they have the automatic 5 to 10 point advantage that gives them baked into their expectations. That’s how they “unskewed” their polls last time, not realizing that their 10 point advantage had shrunk to maybe 5 since 2008.

I don’t believe it will happen. They’ll make a big song and dance about taking it down, but when the public attention has waned, they’ll quietly drop all talk about it and it will remain. Or they’ll do as they did in 2000, finding some way to take it down from that pole and continue to let it fly somewhere else. There is, after all, a reason they put a 2/3 vote requirement on any vote to take it down and put a padlock on the pole.

So what if something were to happen to that particular flag? Like a drone came by and bombarded it with yellow paint balls? Does the law require taking that one down and putting up a new, clean one, or does the painted one stay? Asking for a friend.

In the universe of offenses and offensiveness, they are at opposite ends of the spectrum.

At the one end, you’ve got pure unadulterated hate. Hate that the right wing has cultivated and nurtured by active and passive means.

At the other, you’ve got a President who identifies that this hate exists and that we as a nation have to confront it and our sordid past - particularly in the South and urban areas where longstanding policies have entrenched racism.

In between, you’ve got people and groups like NRO and others who play DARVO and project their hate on to those seeking to combat it.

And you’ve also got the Supreme Court’s conservative members who think we’re past racism, ignoring the racism in our very midst.

150 years on from the Civil War, and we’ve still got people who revel in the Confederacy - the side that lost; the side that engaged in insurrection with the rationale of defending the institution of slavery (just look at the articles of secession after all; and the side that instituted Jim Crow and segregation because they couldn’t allow blacks to be on equal terms with whites.

The Confederate flag is still a potent symbol of that racist past.

We shouldn’t forget it - or that history.

I’m in IE 11 now. One thing I noticed…everything was fine until I logged in. Once I logged in it started jumping. Let’s see if I can get a comment in.

I think it is the AdSense slot. It is the area where a single ad appears right below your copy and just above the “Jump to the bottom” button. Then when it wants to place the ad at the bottom, it puts it below the green comment entry box at the very bottom of the page.

Just got a stopped script message and there are graphic exclamation marks where all the main ads are supposed to be at the very top and the one to the left side of the main story block. The Taboola ads are still there and don’t seem to be the culprit.

But the crashed script at least allowed me to type.

Some never stopped.

Way back when, after the war, many in the Confederacy had to swear allegiance back to the US. It was a tough process.

One of my 2nd great grandfathers did Reconstruction duty as the last assignment of his Union unit. Most of his unit complained about the terrible conditions. On the whole Reconstruction was at best partially successful, and in hindsight was underfunded.

Remember that many in the South were just poor farmers. These people had little, including little formal education. Even if someone was not gung-ho on slavery there would be little to do than go along with the majority.

If I recall correctly, wasn’t it only recently that the last recipient of a Civil War pension passed away, a daughter of a soldier?

My great grandparents were born either before the war, during the war, or in the decade after the war.

My point is that the US Civil War is still very much part of our American experience today. We are still dealing with its fallout.

Christian Identity (also known as Identity Christianity) (CI) refers to a belief system, which holds that the ancient Israelites are the Anglo-Saxon, Germanic, Nordic and kindred peoples of the world and are the physical descendants of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. It is not an organized religion but composed of individuals, churches and some prison gangs with a white supremacist theology that promotes a racial interpretation of Christianity. Christian Identity beliefs were primarily developed and promoted by two authors who borrowed racialist doctrines from Rabbinic Judaism and then reversed their application to Jews and Europeans, so the Europeans are considered the “chosen people” and the Jews are considered the cursed offspring of Cain. Many of these teachings were later adopted by white supremacist sects and gangs.

There were several “Last Confederate Widows”. One died near here about ten years ago. She was 15 when she married a veteran in his 80s—a small pension for her, end-of-life-care for him.

The SCV claims there are 4 “Real Sons” of veterans known to be alive.

I had this notion - admittedly anti-democratic - that we should have the next couple of Presidents chosen by committee specifically to provoke bigots. We’ve had a black guy in the White House for a couple of terms, and look what it’s flushed out! So next, we need at least a woman, a Jew, a Muslim, an atheist, and a gay man, in any order really, and of course all of them should be filthy stinking liburls. Or maybe they could all be in the cabinet of one of the others. The conservatives like to bitch about everything being PC, so let’s have a truly “Affirmative Action Adminstration” and watch their teeny little heads explode.

Edit: let’s not forget transgender folks either. And sex workers. I would create a cabinet position for American sexual and reproductive health and load it up with the most interesting and smart non-traditional people we could find. Oh gods, that would be fun….
