Uh, About Those Clinton Confederate Flag Campaign Buttons? Two Can Play This Game

Rand Paul Confederate flag merchandise surfaces
Wingnuts • Views: 53,829

Right wing bloggers are having a huge outrage party over the discovery of some old campaign buttons created by supporters of Hillary Clinton that feature a Confederate flag. Breitbart “News” hack Joel Pollak is a good example: HILLARY CLINTON CONFEDERATE FLAG MERCHANDISE SURFACES ON EBAY!

In 2007, Hillary Clinton commented on the Confederate flag in South Carolina, saying that she “personally would like to see it removed from the Statehouse grounds.” She has not been asked about the flag in the present context.

Meanwhile, however, as GOP presidential candidate Rand Paul announces his sudden opinion that the Confederate flag belongs in a museum… has anyone asked Rand about these 2016 campaign buttons for sale by a supporter on Zazzle?

We demand that Rand be asked!

And by the way, has anyone ever asked Rand’s father Ron how he feels about the Confederate flag?

UPDATE at 6/23/15 11:47:36 am by Charles Johnson

We also demand that somebody immediately ask John McCain and Sarah Palin about this campaign button!

I think I’m only the only MS based lizard (though I could be wrong). I’m working on an in-depth page about the Mississippi flag thing. I know Thanos already has one up I just wanted to stake a claim to it if I could because it’s a very personal matter to me.

When all else fails, deflect and derail the argument.

Ignore the fact that nobody is going to outlaw or prohibit the display of the Confederate flag…by private citizens.

It has just been decided that it is inappropriate for a government body or institution to display it anywhere outside a museum.

Just like it is fine to put up a Nativity scene, just not on public grounds.

It was brought up earlier this morning, that anyone can make their own campaign button, but “official” campaign buttons will have a logo on them if they were made in the USA.

Hmmm. I wonder if Amazon is going to block Marketplace sellers as well. Also, saw this on my local news reports this morning:

Biloxi Souvenir shops phase out Confederate Merchandise

Sharkheads and Souvenir City are phasing out novelty items that feature the Confederate battle flag, and have been for several years, owner J.J. Pierotich said.

The owner of the souvenir shops said Confederate flag items are still available, but no longer prominently displayed.

“I don’t think it fits in today’s society,” Pierotich said. “It offends some people … We want to welcome all races and nationalities in our store, as we always have. We want to make them feel comfortable that this is a family destination.”

Customers at Sharkheads had predictably mixed opinions on the topic.

“It’s a shame what they’re trying to do. Taking the flag down,” said a man who declined to identify himself.

“It’s being misused,” by the South Carolina church shooter, he said. “Look at what he did to the American flag,” referring to a photo of Dylan Roof burning an Amercan flag.

Derrical Bell, 44, of Albany, Ga., said “I do honestly feel that it does have subtle themes of racism.”

“Do they have the right to fly the flag?, Yea,” he said, just as African Americans have the right to express pride in their heritage.

“We have to deal with it in our own way.”

17 Kragar  Jun 23, 2015 11:48:34am

The Satanic Temple is, of course, already suing Missouri in state court over the state’s abortion laws, arguing that Doe’s religious beliefs dictate that her body is solely under her own control and that a human life doesn’t begin at conception. When Doe arrived at the St. Louis Planned Parenthood in May to have her abortion, she attempted to bypass the waiting period and the “informed consent” booklet with a letter outlining her religious beliefs:

This letter is my statement that I choose to have an abortion today —now — and without further review of the Booklet. I make that choice voluntarily, freely, and without coercion. I am informed to my satisfaction — both as a religious and a scientific matter — that an abortion will not terminate the life of a separate, unique, living human being.

That letter didn’t work, hence the state lawsuit. This morning, Satanic Temple spokesperson Lucien Greaves — who will also answer to the name “Doug” — sent Jezebel a press release announcing that a federal lawsuit is also necessary, since many states have the same restrictions as Missouri.

Are they going to avenge the Confederacy?

They keep lying to themselves, claiming the War was not about slavery.

The “states right” the Confederates were fighting over was the right to own slaves.

How hard can it be to understand this?

I might need to invest in companies that manufacture fainting couches and pearl strings for clutching, ‘cause if the Satanists take this all the way up to the SCOTUS - and win - I can’t even begin to imagine the wingnut reaction.

But I’m pretty damned sure it’ll involve clutching at pearls and fainting. Come to think of it, I should probably also invest in companies that make smelling salts.

And the “states rights” they opposed were northern states ignoring the Fugitive Slave Act

It is not incorrect to say that the Civil War was not entirely about slavery, but Confederate revisionists have turned this around to “The Civil War was entirely not about slavery”

Nine people died because of the environment that fostered Mr. Roof.

I’m saddened that they died and it’s somehow fitting that their deaths are changing the environment that caused their deaths.

Once we get rid of the symbols and those that celebrated them, perhaps we can finally begin to heal the festering would that is southern pride and find a way for them to accept what they’ve been tacitly supporting and change things for the better.

From the League of South FAQ:

Q: Is the LS a Christian organisation?

A: While we have no religious requirement for membership, as an organisation we do recognise the legacy of Christianity and the universal sovereignty of the triune God. Most League members are Christians, and we base our movement on Christian principles. Trinitarian Christianity can not be separated or removed from Southern society or culture without both ceasing to be Southern.

Shorter version: you don’t have to be a Christian to join, you just need to believe in the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost.

And even that’s not really true. The northern state authorities would not *help* return escaped slaves. And that was part of what the Fugitive Slave Laws were all about - trying to force the state authorities legally to aid in the recapture and return. Plus I think some pressures to crack down on abolitionists and others who were helping the slaves reach Canada.

And it gets more complicated since if you think about it. In that time period if you were born a free black living in somewhere like Boston what prevents a man with a piece of paper turning up and claiming you were actually were the escaped slave described on that piece of paper. You don’t have manumission papers, and it then turns into a court case where your livelihood is eclipsed since you’re in court, plus you’re essentially at the whim of a judge from getting sent south into bondage.

Let’s assume for the sake of argument that everything Ben says is true. It still has no bearing on bringing down the Confederate flag.

I can’t suspend my disbelief to that degree.

Rush Limbaugh “thinks” that the confederate rag is an “American tradition”….of which the Left is trying to destroying

From: rawstory.com

According to the conservative talker, liberals had a plan to paint everyone in the entire South as if they were the white supremacist who murdered nine black church members in Charleston.

“Do not doubt me!” Limbaugh insisted. “And I’ll make another prediction to you. The next flag that will come under assault — and it will not be long — is the American flag.”

“It makes perfect sense,” he continued. “The speed and rapidity with which the left is conducting this assault on all these American traditions and institutions, if you don’t think the American flag is in their crosshairs down the road, you had better stop and reconsider.”
