Lindsey Graham on Charleston Shooter: ‘That’s Mideast Hate’

Aw, hell no

YouTube

The amount of idiocy and tortured rationalizations coming out of the right wing about the Charleston shootings is stunning. But I think Lindsey Graham may just win the prize today for the many layers of bigotry, stupidity and blind denial that he managed to pack into just three words: “That’s Mideast hate.

No.

Hell no.

This brand of hate is as American as the Ku Klux Klan — as red, white and blue as the Confederate battle flag. It’s white supremacist hate, and this is far from the first time it’s erupted into violence in this country. This is the hate that’s been winked at and surreptitiously fed by right wing politicians for many, many years, people who depend on the “Southern Strategy” of slyly encouraging the racists in the Republican base to win their votes. And it’s kept alive by right wing media like Fox News, who frequently allow extremist loons to spout ugly propaganda and racist incitement to their audience of millions of like-minded bubbas.

Blaming this on “Mideast hate” is so moronically ignorant and bigoted it could only have come from a Republican politician, pandering to the right wing base that never gets tired of this nasty rhetoric.

Lindsay Graham shows:

How to be a big fat bigot in the South without invoking hatred of black people, specifically. For circumstantial reasons.

For no real reason, this has been my favorite line from anything I’ve read today. Even the post title was great:

If there was a flag that symbolized my hatred of Ron Fournier and David Brooks, I would fly it. But, even then, I wouldn’t want it flown above my state capital and I’d understand if Amazon and Walmart didn’t want to sell it.

re: #11 Backwoods_Sleuth

Also this, in case anyone needs to cite an additional source. Apparently it’s popular all over the damned place, for varying reasons. And, yes, it’s popular with the European far right, including German skinheads and neo-Nazis:

Why do Italian soccer fans and other foreigners fly the Confederate flag?

Outside the soccer stadium, European extremist political groups have been known to fly the Confederate flag, too. European skinheads and neo-Nazis have sometimes adopted the Confederate flag, especially in Germany, where the swastika and other symbols of Nazi Germany are officially banned by law. Many Europeans see the flag as a de facto sign of far-right political leanings: A Confederate flag that was spotted in a photograph of a French police station last year caused a minor scandal.

Bizarrely, American Civil War reenactions have become popular in Germany, with significant numbers of Germans preferring to fight on the Confederate side. “I think some of the Confederate reenactors in Germany are acting out Nazi fantasies of racial superiority,” Wolfgang Hochbruck, a professor of American Studies at the University of Freiburg, once told American journalist Tony Horwitz. “They are obsessed with your war because they cannot celebrate their own vanquished racists.”

“Mideast hate”? No, that’s Mid-South hate.

He was merely expanding on his original idiotic comment from last week:

“To go into God’s space and do this, I don’t know,” he told ABC News. “You can’t explain it. … I go to the Middle East a lot. I’ve seen hate up close. I’ve seen communities where everybody has been killed because they’re a different religion, and you think that’s just over there. Sometimes it’s not just over there.”

On Chris Hayes just now, guest pointed out that Alabama has voted twice recently, in 2004 and 2012, to keep language in their State Constitution prohibiting racial integration in education.

The votes are totally symbolic, because Brown v. Board invalidated racial segregation in education nationwide. But the people of Alabama were given to opportunities to remove that archaic, bigoted language from their Constitution and chose instead to keep it. The vote margin to keep the segregation language actually increased in 2012, because bigots hate Obama.

I’m kind of stunned.

“…Johnnie Holley Jr., commander of the SCV Texas division, said that people “need to know the true history of this nation and the world,” suggesting that the legacy of the Confederacy in Texas isn’t racism—but, unfortunately for his cause, the historical record in Texas is clear. Over the objection of then-leader Sam Houston, when Texas issued its Confederate declaration of war, the declaration clearly said: “We hold as undeniable truths that the governments of the various States, and of the confederacy itself, were established exclusively by the white race, for themselves and their posterity; that the African race had no agency in their establishment; that they were rightfully held and regarded as an inferior and dependent race, and in that condition only could their existence in this country be rendered beneficial or tolerable.”

For one thing, the Confederacy barred black folks, freemen or slaves, from serving in the Army until March 1865. And efforts to change that had run into the reality that allowing colored soldiers to fight would totally undermine the stated reason for the war, which was the superiority of the white race over all others.

Republicans Forget That They’re Supposed to Blame Democrats for Segregation and Slavery

“…we have a disagreement over which party ought to bear the legacy of slavery and segregation. Republicans insist it ought to be Democrats, out of partisan continuity, and Democrats insist it ought to be Republicans, out of ideological and demographic continuity.

Given their investment in this argument, you would think Republicans would be eager to divest themselves from the symbols of slavery and segregation. But far from it. Democrats are the most eager to remove the confederate flag, a symbol of slavery and treason that was revived in the 20th century as a symbol of resistance to civil-rights legislation.”

re: #83 EPR-radar

Seen me being raised by Northerners, I see states that are usually the worst to live in by any metric, and are still not accepting of minorities. I will give you BBQ, but most of the south, save the somewhat redeemed areas in a handful of major cities, and to some extent Virginia and Florida, strike me as being as backwards as the Tribal regions of Pakistan.

Again, I will give you the BBQ, but I am still of the opinion that the best way to fix the US is to have immigrants pour into the south.

My opinion of the South is not too far removed from the SNL skit about Clinton in the early 90s.

re: #94 Targetpractice

For one thing, the Confederacy barred black folks, freemen or slaves, from serving in the Army until March 1865. And efforts to change that had run into the reality that allowed colored soldiers to fight would totally undermine the stated reason for the war, which was the superiority of the white race over all others.

I suspect the thought of slaves and former slaves having guns also gave them moments of pause.

103 Nyet  Jun 24, 2015 6:06:59pm
Fact- Quite simply a major falsehood of history. Many blacks, both free and of their own will, joined the Confederate Army to fight for their beloved Southern home. Additionally, men of other ethnic extraction fought as well. Oriental, Mexican & Spanish men as well as Native American Indians fought with pride for the South.

And then he quotes from a site that for all practical purposes debunks him:

Here is an excerpt from history.com in regards to how black men were allowed to fight in the war.

On this day, March 16th, 1865, with the main Rebel armies facing long odds against must larger Union armies, the Confederacy, in a desperate measure, reluctantly approves the use of black troops.

And in a few weeks the war ended.

Yeah, case proven. Not.

Children of the Confederacy Creed

Location: First Floor Corridor

Because we desire to perpetuate, in love and honor, the heroic deeds of those who enlisted in the Confederate Army, and upheld its flag through four years of war, we, the children of the South, have united in an organization called “Children of the Confederacy” in which our strength, enthusiasm, and love of justice can exert its influence. We, therefore, pledge ourselves to preserve pure ideals; to honor our veterans; to study and teach the truths of history (one of the most important of which is, that the war between the states was not a rebellion, nor was its underlying cause to sustain slavery), and to always act in a manner that will reflect honor upon our noble and patriotic ancestors.

re: #97 The War TARDIS

Seen me being raised by Northerners, I see states that are usually the worst to live in by any metric, and are still not accepting of minorities. I will give you BBQ, but most of the south, save the somewhat redeemed areas in a handful of major cities, and to some extent Virginia and Florida, strike me as being as backwards as the Tribal regions of Pakistan.

Again, I will give you the BBQ, but I am still of the opinion that the best way to fix the US is to have immigrants pour into the south.

My opinion of the South is not too far removed from the SNL skit about Clinton in the early 90s.

There you go again with you extremely broad brush. Dog knows, living in South Carolina, I’m as quick to criticize the idiots as anyone, but no, it is not all “as backwards as the tribal regions of Pakistan.” Jeez. (And, correct me if I’m wrong, but you live in Oklahoma, correct? Jim Inhofe’s Oklahoma?)

There are many of us—granted not enough right now—working hard every day to do good things and make a difference, rather than just running our mouths about how awful it is, and your wholesale suggestions are pretty insulting.

Even so, the Army of Tennessee showed an incredible devotion to duty in attacking Schofield’s entrenched men at Franklin. From the brigade level on down, they almost surely almost certainly knew (to use Lord Tennyson’s famous words) “that someone had blundered”. But yet they went forward anyways, out of loyalty to their cause and comrades, and the sense of honor prevalent in that age.

Yet, their cause was rotten and their fidelity was given to a man who in becoming an army commander had reached what today would be called his “level of incompetence”. John Bell Hood was a fine division commander, when he’d had James Longstreet to restrain him. And he’d been a decent corps commander, if briefly, because Joe Johnston had the operation acumen Hood lacked and Hood did obey his superiors. But as an army commander, Hood was an utter failure, as he no longer had anyone directly above him to check his aggressive tendancies and he never appreciated the way the percussion cap, the ‘minnie ball’ and rifled artillery had given the defense the advantage.

re: #244 Dark_Falcon

Franklin was not the end for the Army of Tennessee. The end came less than three weeks later in front of Nashville, when the 60,000-strong Army of the Cumberland, under the loyalist Virginia MG George Thomas, smashed the now less 30,00 men under Hood. At Nashville, the Army of Tennessee’s heart finally cracked, as they knew Hood could not bring them victory against the impossible odds they faced. Instead of holding to the last, with dismounted cavalry threatening their flank the Graybacks broke and ran.

Partly reformed, they trudged southeast to Augusta, Georgia. As they marched, they sang a parody of “The Yellow Rose of Texas”, mocking their now former commander:

“So now I’m marching southwards,
My heart is full of woe!
I’m going back to Georgia,
to see my uncle Joe.”

“You may talk about your Beauregard,
and sing of General Lee,
But the Gallant Hood of Texas played Hell in Tennessee!”

Others here have said it already, but I am amazed that the sudden rejection of the Confederate flag by so many unlikely agents of change. I mean, Wal-Mart? The governor of South Carolina? And most of its state assembly?

I lived in Kentucky for almost 30 years, and despite it being a border state, there is still a large segment of the population that considers itself “southern.” Confederate flags everywhere (especially in the South End, the old working class white part of town that’s now home to African and Asian immigrants, too). There is even a confederate monument erected by the city near the U of Louisville. en.wikipedia.org

So I wonder how this rejection of the Confederate flag in the former CSA states is going to affect things in Kentucky. I got some in-laws who will probably fight it tooth and nail.

It’s mostly eyewash. Don’t get me wrong, it is inherently a good thing but it remains something that they are willing to give up to avoid discussion of more important things: guns, poverty, the class war of the 1% against the middle class, and the root causes of all of these problems. So all Americans should grab this and be glad of it but not allow ourselves to stop there.

DF has a point. Just because the wackos have co-opted the word conservative doesn’t make them conservative. It’s gotten to the point that nobody knows what conservatism is anymore. Belieb it or not, there is a lot of overlap between conservative and liberal.
RWNJs are extremists. They are reactionary. It is completely illogical to be both conservative and an extremist (I’ve even heard professional commemtators use the term “radical conservative”). Painting with the broad brush of “conservative” not only distorts the meaning of the word conservative, it gives the wackos some semblance of ideological cover by not calling them what they really are.

Farrakhan is an outlier - that’s not to say that from time to time, he doesn’t make a legitimate point (the blind squirrel effect), but I know damn well what Drudge is doing - he’s trying to portray Farrakhan as representative of the entire black American community.

The NoI is a fringe group at best with estimates of 20,000 to 50,000 core members - not to mention that their teachings diverge greatly from orthodox Islam (can you say UFO religion? and they’ve hooked up with the Scientologists? - yeah……that’s mighty different, to say the least). But that won’t stop this from becoming a RWNJ talking point - and thus inadvertently give Farrakhan publicity he wouldn’t get otherwise. I’m sure he’s smiling right about now.

And curious (In an Alice sort of way). They’ve been ditching the Confederate Battle flag a little too quickly and regularly for my taste for it to be just them trying to salvage what’s left of the voter base. My gut indicates they may very well be trying to deflect attention from some area which contains something they don’t want discovered.

Yes and no. DF sees himself as representing the old school of classic “good” conservatism like his father. I mentioned Burke for a reason. That such a critter is as rare in the real world as a successful communist really doesn’t matter. That he is, in his actual beliefs as expressed here, much more moderate than his party is irrelevant as well. Like a blue dog he’ll vote for whomever his party puts up tbere

328 Wendell Zurkowitz (slave to the waffle light)  Jun 25, 2015 3:53:47am

I am the owner of several Confederate battle flags. In 1/72 scale and in paper, they adorn the standard bearers of my Confederate miniature units.

I have to say that I do not understand why the US National Parks Service has suspended sales of CSA flags: a museum or historical site is about the only place where an official display of such a symbol could be considered appropriate.

Let us not forget that the entire dispute, dating back to the flag’s revival at the height of the Civil Rights struggle, has been about context.

I agree with a lot of conservative values such as self-reliance, individual initiative and a free market. But I see a free market as a mechanism, not an absolute end in itself in which individuals with limited resources are pitted against multi-billion-dollar corporations.

And I believe in strong families, ones that are able to support, nurture and educate their children on what the parents earn. And I do not care if said parents are of the same or opposite gender as long as they are making the effort to raise their families.

I try not to use the words ‘conservative’ and ‘liberal’, or left and right. The former pair because they are pretty much meaningless. The latter because the boarding requirements of horses shouldn’t define our political discourse.

I prefer Jefferson.

Men by their constitutions are naturally divided into two parties: 1. Those who fear and distrust the people, and wish to draw all powers from them into the hands of the higher classes. 2. Those who identify themselves with the people, have confidence in them, cherish and consider them as the most honest and safe, although not the most wise depositary of the public interests. In every country these two parties exist, and in every one where they are free to think, speak, and write, they will declare themselves. Call them, therefore, liberals and serviles, Jacobins and Ultras, whigs and tories, republicans and federalists, aristocrats and democrats, or by whatever name you please, they are the same parties still and pursue the same object. The last appellation of aristocrats and democrats is the true one expressing the essence of all.

I also add the term barbarian to my usage. Barbarian as defined by H. Beam Piper as ‘someone who doesn’t understand civilization and wouldn’t like it if they did.’

The racists, theocrats and oligarchs that make up much of the ‘conservative’ movement these days are aristocrats. The anarchists, I mean libertarians, that make up the rest of it are barbarians.

Much more useful I think.

The King v. Burwell case is, I’m thinking, going to open the door for some real political debate in the coming election. Because several of the states which don’t have their own exchanges still have many people participating, and the loss of insurance by those people could tip the balance in some of the state elections. And we have seen Republican governors go along with the ACA out of practicality, not being so hardcore dogmatically as the right wing political pundits would like them to be.

Practicality is the death-knell of glibertarianism.

Toy poodles are good eating.

Chat Noir was terrorized by the neighbor’s cat last night. He was out and one of their cats got out while I was going over there for dinner.

This cat, a 7.5 lb female calico, was lying on her back and mewed at Chat Noir a few times since she wanted to be friendly and play. Chat Noir, who weighs about 11 lb, was frantically trying to get back into the apartment. The other cat batted at his tail and he literally jumped about a foot in the air. He got back in, and Tuxedo Cat threw a hissy fit at the neighbor’s cat upon sight of her.

The cat interactions here are interesting. Limited interactions among the four of them but boils down to:
Tuxedo Cat - hates all other cats; tolerates Chat Noir
Chat Noir - friendly with people; curious; very leery of neighbor cats
Miss Kitty - Friendly neighbor cat who likes to come out in the hall - doesn’t seem to understand the hostility and fear she inspires in my feline overlords
Lucy - aloof neighbor cat who does not come out into the hall. If you have chicken, now that is a new conversation altogether!

I’ve been to the Derby infield three times. It’s more an exercise in cultural anthropology than in watching the races. The infield is wall to wall people in various stages of inebriation and undress, despite efforts to clean things up over the years, and the only way to see the horses is to force your way through the crowd to the inside fence.

I also have the impression that the infields for NASCAR and Indy races are like this as well. Though the race takes longer and thus I guess you have a higher chance of actually seeing a race car in motion.

Sweet! A friend of mine has a nearly complete set of Derby glasses. Somewhere I have one or two that survived my visits to the Infield in the mid-80s.

The build to the race is something to behold. Louisville has turned a two-minute race into a two-week-long extravaganza of entertainment and tourist attractions. And for one or two days (for the Oaks and the Derby), the rich and famous, and the world’s media pay attention to Louisville, KY. The other 363 days of the year it’s like “Louisville where?”

Yeah. The Derby Week idea was just growing then. Now it even includes a hot-air balloon race. My biggest educational mistake was turning down the chance to get a balloonist license for the cost of a UofL PE course.

The old Riverside Raceway would allow you to park your car in the infield from Thursday practice through the big race on Sunday. You could see some nice stretches of the track from just about anywhere. The infield was grass and sleeping under the stars was recommended. It was Woodstock for gearheads.

First decision is something on Texas housing.

409 Backwoods_Sleuth  Jun 25, 2015 7:04:02am

First opinion is Texas Housing. 5-4 Fifth Circuit affirmed and remanded.
Disparate impact claims are cognizable under the Fair Housing Act.

The issue in this case is whether the Fair Housing Act allows lawsuits based on disparate impact - that is, an allegation that a law or practice has a discriminatory effect, even if it wasn’t based on a discriminatory purpose. The Court had granted review to consider this question in two earlier cases, but both of those cases settled before the Court could rule on them. - See more at: live.scotusblog.com

Regarding whether a state has to accept a ssm from another state - I don’t see how that could be not upheld.

Whether all the anti-ssm laws in the various states will be struck down - that I can’t call. I can see why a justice might find hiding room in some obscure precedent, in order to try to avoid confronting the issue head on.

Charles Pierce hits it again:

Now to Abandon the Ideas Behind the Confederate Flag

[…]

For that, we have to go to our good friends at the Tenth Amendment Center, the central modern clearing house for all the notions about government that the banner of sedition always has represented. It is at the TAC where you discover the importance of nullification — historically, the necessary precursor drug of secession — to our history and our Constitutional order, the basic suspension vehicle through which Calhounism entered our political bloodstream. (Oddly enough, you won’t find much mention of old John C., but you will find an argument in the material that the true fathers of nullification were the northern abolitionists opposed to the Fugitive Slave Act.) It is important as you wander through the website to recall that most of the arguments there depend vitally on ignoring the Ninth, Thirteenth, Fourteenth, and Fifteenth amendments, the last three adopted because Tentherism run amok had led to the Civil War in which the Tenther side got its ass handed to it. Rick Perry, who suddenly is bothered by the flag of treason, is running for president specifically as a Tenther, to the point where it seems as though he’s running to succeed in office not Barack Obama, but Jefferson Davis. Nikki Haley, the governor of South Carolina who is now an American hero for proposing to lower the banner of sedition, is a regular at Tenther events, especially those involving South Carolina Tea Partiers and their firearms. Robert Bentley of Alabama, who also has decided that his state’s capitol could do without the symbol of the slaveholding society, is such a staunch Tenther that he has stood by the inalienable right of his constituents to sicken and die, and also the inalienable right of his constituents to be bigots. He even found Tenth Amendment grounds to fight off our old friend Agenda 21, the secret UN plan to steal all our golfs.

In the comments section of The Brian Lehrer show on our local NPR station WNYC, Brian from Forest Hills writes:

Chief Roberts in the ACA decision today: “In a democracy, the power to make the law rests with those chosen by the people. Our role is more confined — ‘to say what the law is.’ Marbury v Madison, 1 Cranch 137, 177 (1803). That is easier in some cases than in others. But in every case we must respect the role of the Legislature, and take care not to undo what it has done. A fair reading of legislation demands a fair understanding of the legislative plan.”

Why did this not apply to the court’s interpretation of the Voting Rights Act?!

*ducks*

If the pressure creates a transonic wave front of bones and blood, it would count. Probably be seen as a “misadventure’, though.

Jiggery Pokery is from Harry Potter!

I’ve always used “jiggery-pokery”. I’ve been talking about the “Electoral College jiggery-pokery” that put Bush in the White House since 2000.

I hate to say it as well, but i sort of agree with that assessment - it could all add up to some bad crazy; and let’s not forget, Jade Helm 15 starts next month, and the wingnuts are all over that.

There’s a part of me that says “Brace yourselves”.

emphasis mine

Hurr hurr, no, uh, wait, are you like saying that we want to destroy markets?

re: #586 Dr Lizardo

I quite agree. I only wish the SCOTUS had ruled in favor of SSM and released the decision today - the wingnut implosion would’ve been truly spectacular to behold.

You gotta work the body, work the body work the body, then to the head.
