GOHMERT! “God’s Hand of Protection Will Be Withdrawn” Because of Same Sex Marriage

In today’s episode of Life With Gohmert, Louie freaks out about same sex marriage
Wingnuts • Views: 72,992

The Gohmert is very worked up today (along with the rest of the wingnut-o-sphere) because his fundamentalist religious bigotry can no longer be enforced by the government. Being unable to impose their beliefs on the rest of America, in their warped world view, is of course tyranny.

And not only that. The guy upstairs tells Louie that America is now doomed, and He’s going to be withdrawing his Hand Of Protection. This has made Louie gravely fearful, and there isn’t enough asparagus in all of Michigan to console him. But the Gohmert will do everything in his power to try to talk The Big Guy out of it.

“It is clear beyond any doubt that Justices Kagan and Ginsberg have held exceedingly strong opinions that same-sex marriages were constitutional by virtue of their having performed them. When Justices of the highest court in the country believe they do not have to comply with essential laws governing courts themselves, then there is no overriding legitimate law of the land, which action standing alone is enough to substantiate tyranny.

“Founders and leaders including George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Franklin Roosevelt, John Kennedy, Ronald Reagan and most all of the Presidents have noted that it is God who has been the source of this nation’s unfathomable blessings. But if Moses, Jesus, and contributors to the Bible were correct, God’s hand of protection will be withdrawn as future actions from external and internal forces will soon make clear. I will do all I can to prevent such harm, but I am gravely fearful that the stage has now been set.”

Say Louie, where were you on the King case, where Clarence Thomas sat on the bench despite his wife making money as head of an organization dedicated to defeating the ACA?

Instead of packing Louie Gohmert off to a home for the incurably delusional, voters have sent him to join the House Republicans.

But I repeat myself.

My favorite insufferable moral scold Rod Dreher and a certain Prof Kingsfield have no use for your freedom and personal autonomy…

“Alasdair Macintyre is right,” he said. “It’s like a nuclear bomb went off, but in slow motion.” What he meant by this is that our culture has lost the ability to reason together, because too many of us want and believe radically incompatible things.

But only one side has the power. When I asked Kingsfield what most people outside elite legal and academic circles don’t understand about the way elites think, he said “there’s this radical incomprehension of religion.”

*******

“Autonomous self-definition is at the root of all this,” Prof. Kingsfield said. We are now at the point, he said, at which it is legitimate to ask if sexual autonomy is more important than the First Amendment.

See what happens when you give people freedom to make their own decisions? Rod and his friends get sad.

re: #8 Aunty Entity Dragon

What Dreher et al., don’t get is that the whole point of separation of church and state is to prevent sectarian ideals from being made state law. Like all theocrats, they only think about how much they would enjoy having such theocratic power. They are purely incapable of considering how badly they would be screwed if an opposing sect were able to seize control in a theocracy.

Catacombs

46 CuriousLurker  Jun 26, 2015 4:56:06pm

Moved from downstairs as I did realize there was a new thread up.

——————————————————————

HA! I was doing some reading this afternoon on the history of all this and discovered that the wingnuts made the bed they’re now being forced to lie down in.

I’m working on a Page about it now, but here’s the short version sans citations:

Back in the early ’90s three gay couples filed applications for marriage licenses in Hawaii and sued the state when they were denied. The state Supreme Court ruled that if Hawaii wanted to continue denying licenses, then it would have to go to trail in a state court and establish “a compelling state interest” in which sexual orientation would be subject to the same legal standard as gender discrimination. Realizing this could have serious and very real consequences, the wingnuts freaked right the hell out.

In 1996, the House Judiciary Committee issued a report recommending a bill called… wait for it… the Defense of Marriage Act. The bill was adopted by a rollcall vote of 20-10 (18 of the 20 ayes were members of the GOP, all of the nays were Dems). Okay, you guys probably already knew that, but the thing is that it is precisely what brought the federal government into the equation because for hundreds of years prior to that marriage law had been determined by the state.

The rest is history: 17 years later—on June 26, 2013—Section 3 of the DOMA was struck down as unconstitutional by SCOTUS (United States v. Windsor). Two years to the day after that—today, on June 26. 2015—SCOTUS decided that the 14th Amendment covers SSM, thereby effectively striking down Section 2 of DOMA and making it legal in all 50 states.

So if the federal government (with the GOP leading the charge) had stayed the hell out of people’s bedrooms and stuck to the the business of running the country instead of snooping & moralizing, then the wingnuts wouldn’t be where they are now. It’s their own damned fault—they opened the door.

Go ahead—cry me a frickin’ river.

I see Politico is trolling the public with a piece on polyamory, which the religious right is picking up as a SEE!SEE!SEE! - proof of a supposed slippery slope.

I for one think polygamy is kind of strange, but I do wonder if fear of it is truly rooted in principle or just a knee jerk reaction.

Since polyamory will in most societies mean polygamy it is pretty clear that there is a gender bias, and thus discrimination, built into the idea of selling polyamory. And as a male I think polyandry has little appeal to most men.

I think the whole idea is moot, but on the other hand I wish the right for SSM came in a better designed legal package, where a solid basis for a prefered social contract in the form of a two-party relationship was developed.

Think about that, Rick.

127 freetoken  Jun 26, 2015 5:36:40pm

I would be fine with multi-party domestic arrangements protected by law.

And unlike the religious right, who for some reason think the idea is wrong even though the Bible is littered with such arrangements, without damnation by God, I believe such arrangements don’t even have to include sex.

Marriage is not just for sex. This is where the religious right goes so wrong. Marriage is a social arrangement to create a basic social unit that is given special protections.

If you read the history of the past several centuries you will find it common for people to get married several times, after being widowed, and not for love but because they needed a way to raise children and live.

And, with modern bio-technology, we can now how multi-parent children. This is an area which will grow and I think it ought to do so.

So all the fear mongering over polygamy I think needs to be thrown back in the face of the demagogues… it is way past time to do a rethink of how we base our laws. Even in today’s USSC decision one can hear in the dissenters the lamenting of the religious traditions that now fail us in the 21st century.

Maybe it’s my anti partisan mindset. I have long thought that contrary to the critics the court truly has its own impulses and motivations that just defy allegations of the “conservative” and “liberal” bias that come and go with the harshest perceptions of decisions.

I make no claim to better understanding that confluence of personality and education and experiences than anyone. its just that partisan demands and expectations of SCOTUS are disappointed more than confirmed at least in my lifetime.

Confirmation bias or maybe do I have a point?

I thought it was pretty funny that wingnuts were calling Nikki Haley a RINO for calling for the removal of the Confederate Flag, when of course the original Republicans tore that rag down by force wherever they encountered it.

Brooks is pretty awful. His work is very predictable once one realizes his pattern of writing things that the owner class likes to believe are true. His both-siderism doesn’t improve the overall picture.

I say again, anyone who would have any reluctance about voting for the Democratic presidential nominee in 2016, three words:
Supreme. Court. Nominations.

As a reminder—ages these current justices will be in 2016:

Ruth Bader Ginsburg 83
Antonin Scalia 80
Anthony M. Kennedy 80
Stephen Breyer 78

It’s for this reason that the Democrats need to work their asses off to win back the Senate and to retain the WH - because there’s a lot of work ahead and the GOP certainly isn’t going to stand still. The GOP will use this week’s decisions to raise prodigious amounts of cash despite the fact that the odds of repealing the ACA or overturning the SSM ruling are slim to none.

But the funds can help them win or retain seats that they otherwise wouldn’t be able to win or retain.

“The majority expressly disclaims judicial “caution” and omits even a pretense of humility, openly relying on its desire to remake society according to its own “new insight” into the “nature of injustice.” As a result, the Court invalidates the marriage laws of more than half the States and orders the transformation of a social institution that has formed the basis of human society for millennia, for the Kalahari Bushmen and the Han Chinese, the Carthaginians and the Aztecs. Just who do we think we are?”

As a lover of anthropological monographs and history, the above quote from Chief Justice Roberts is utter horseshit.

The continuity of marriage through time and space is reductive and illusory. The Han were polygynous if they could afford it. The Bushmen “marry” and “divorce” by co-habitating, then not co-habitating. Aztec marriages were arranged within kin groups. I have no flipping idea what the Carthaginians did, but I bet you my left testicle it wasn’t an anachronistic simulacrum of an American marriage, with matching expectations and legal responsibilities with regards property and to child raising, sexual practices, domestic economy, et cetera. Given that what I know of Carthage is basically Dido, Hannibal, and bronze god Moloch, marriage probably involved setting things on fire, then getting screwed over by a Roman. Or vice versa.

Nor is marriage and the husband-wife pairing the “basis” for human society. FAMILY is the basis, and the shape of what is family varies culture by culture and even on an individual basis. Nor are the social dyads that form families—husband-wife, brother-brother, cousin-cousin, uncle-nephew—weighted the same from place to place. “Family” used to mean the lolling, many-branched mass of cousins you intermarried with to keep the land titles closely-held that is run half like a corporation and half like a “Game of Thrones” episode.

Marriage as a legal construct—the determination of what shit is shared and what shit is divided, plus inheritance issues—is nearly universal. But that’s a shallow level of universality. Even constraining to the cultural arc of what’s now characterized as “traditional”—that is, ritually Christian, culturally Western Europe, imbedded in post-industrial economy with contract labor—the legal components that make up marriage keep changing, because the dynamics of family and shit distribution are getting more complicated as humans: have more personal possessions; more personal autonomy; live longer lives; move around more; and have the option to quit relationships without accruing personal or familial shame.

Adoption. Property distribution during divorce. Alimony. Palimony, Spousal rape laws. Spouse abuse laws. Domestic partnership. Common law marriage. Any and all guardianship agreements. Divorce and custody agreements. Full and freely given consent by both parties, aka, “your daughter is not a poker chip with tits, Rodrigo Borgia.”

This mess is the ship of Theseus. We’ve been swapping the small parts of marriage and family for so long, bit by bit, that we haven’t noticed that whole damn thing has been replaced. This is not the good old days when marriage was between a man and another man with a daughter. When we wed we create contracts between individuals that are enforced in courts, rather than agreements between families that are enforced through massacres at weddings.

The complexity of our legal formulations of family and marriage just reflect how complex our world is. We have so many options, and that results in a need to structure them. The law is following the norms, and the norms are broadening because people’s experiences are broadening. Legal same-sex marriage is just another step in a continuity of people getting together, then having to create a formal system of co-owning shit.

Lots of people have been on the wrong side of stuff. A lot of Lizards were once right wingers. I read his Daily Dish blog and I can hardly ever remember any mention of The Bell Curve. Maybe he backed off of his support at some time. Sullivan freely admits his mistakes of supporting the war in Iraq. And as far as I remember, he was on the Obama train early on, and he was all over the many lies of Sarah Palin from the beginning.
But now I’m still wondering what an entitled asshat is, and now I’m wondering what other issues he gets a free pass on. And don’t give me Trig Palin because he doesn’t get a free pass on that.

I wish I could explain it better Steve, but I will try. He HAS converted on a few issues, i.e. IRAQ, Obama, Abu Gharib. Won’t argue that, but there’s just a thin veneer of reasonableness that hides his inner Tory. He’s not especially good on race issues. Not terribly empathetic when it comes to understanding the religious stuff, simply because he’s still (AFAIK) a staunch RC and supported them even though they loathed him, who knows, I haven’t seen any takes on the new Pope from him. While he supported Obama, it was over Rand Paul, let me repeat, Rand Freaking Paul. and he characterized his support of Obama as a lesser of two evils kind of thing I suspect he’s a closet libertarian who isn’t a firm believer that government can solve anything and treats it instead as a necessary evil.

He’s been known in the past to play fast and loose with the numbers on his culling of interesting bits in support of his positions and tends to ignore those that don’t.

Essentially, I grew tired of the way that he tilted his field and moved on from him quite some time ago.

Perhaps he’s changed, perhaps he’s improved.. and if so, that’s great, but he hung up his keyboard earlier this year so all I have are the impressions and experiences I’ve had from previous readings.

re: #218 piratedan

I’ve heard from time to time some criticism of Andrew Sullivan about The Bell Curve, but usually it was something in passing (sort of like “entitled asshat”) and the writer moved on to something else. So I tried to fing out something about it.
dish.andrewsullivan.com
In this passage he recounts the decision making process of devoting an issue to the book. From the link above, “the space granted to the critiques of the book was almost twice the space given to Murray and Herrnstein, and laid out at the beginning of the magazine, with the extract at the very end.”
First, I have to assume it’s true, but secondly, I wonder if any critics realize that. All too often a grudge against somebody grows to the point that it exists for its own sake. The fact that an editor devotes an issue to the discussion of a controversial topic doesn’t automatically make him the supporter of the unpopular side, sort of like when Time Magazine would name some villain as the Person of the Year.

We must have both been typing at the same time. As I remember, early on he regarded Barack Obama as the adult in the race (and he hated the Clintons!). Whatever support he had for Rand Paul vanished from his writing long ago.
Keep in mind that regarding government as a necessary evil isn’t necessarily a bad thing. At least he (and I) acknowledge that government is necessary, sort of like a referee to try to keep things fair. And It has been said that as far as government is concerned Democracy is the worst form of government, except for those that have already been tried.
What you’re dealing with is a person who is actually conservative, not reactionary. There are bound to be some things that you can’t agree with, but I think people are a little quick to write him off.

Politics aside - I am a bit bummed out that whoever’s next in office is not going to be as fun as BHO. His staff and PR people and the man himself are really good at sneaking in little things that really are actually *fun*. Off the top of my head:

- Sharing the White House homebrewing beer recipe (which I passed on to an acquaintance who brewed a batch… It was delicious)
- Appearing on “Between Two Ferns” with Zack Galawhatever
- Maron’s podcast (haven’t listened yet - did he still call it What The Fuck with Marc Maron when the President was on??)
- Trolling with rainbow lighting

There are others that I can’t recall offhand, that showed a sense of humor and social media awareness that I appreciate. I’m one of those people who thought his first election was The End of Everything, but came around to (secretly) vote for him in ‘12.

His administration has been far from perfect - he’s been pretty much dedicated to keeping the whole ship from sinking all at once - but I don’t think any administration has been this good and savvy at social outreach, and I certainly can’t see the next crowd being as good either.

I personally think Gore in 2000 is an even better analogy. Gore chose a Democrat who was critical of Clinton for his running mate. He also didn’t let Clinton campaign for him. Hillary needs to let POTUS campaign for her and not choose someone who has been too critical of the administration. She needs to be herself but not ashamed of this president.

I was thinking about how I would reply to Students of Liberty and I realized that the problem is the word tolerance. I tolerate it when my kids intrude on my quiet time because I am their father and they need occasional interaction with me.

In politics, though, tolerance isn’t the right word. Acceptance is a better word. I don’t tolerate your religion; I accept that you should be allowed to choose how you want to worship because it doesn’t affect me. I will not tolerate your bigotry because I do not accept that you have any right to force your will on others.

I know I’m not entirely saying it right, but I think tolerance needs to be pushed aside for a better word.

So. Two huge news items. The Supremes capped off Big Week (google 8th Air Force Big Week for the reference) and the President spoke in Charleston.

As for the Supreme’s decision, the four losers, especially Roberts, gave extraordinarily lame dissenting opinions. The Court has ruled fourteen times establishing marriage and its civil protection as a Right. If that isn’t a subject for judicial review under the 14th Amendment’s requirement of equal protection under the law, I don’t know what is. For Roberts to claim that today’s ruling had nothing to do with the Constitution is just shite.

As for the President’s speech:

(NB- capitalization of God is to be nice.)

I don’t believe I’m one of God’s chosen. I don’t believe I’m one of God’s people. I am not a God-fearing person. I believe that I may or may not be one of God’s children. I don’t know. I’m a Deist.

What I do know is that the President’s eulogy today was really rather extraordinary. It was affecting on so many levels. My hat’s off to the man. He mentioned that the Christian religion and public service can be complementary, and that normally makes me cringe, but he placed it into a context of a Christianity that is based on lifting the least of us. If that is what Christianity becomes in this country, I’ll be a big fan of that philosophy. That would be what Jesus taught, and what has been so corrupted .
