RIP, Chris Squire

A bass maestro

I first heard Chris Squire’s amazing bass tone on the album “Yes” (their first) which I discovered in a cut-out bin at Records Hawaii way back in 1970. I believe I paid 99 cents for it, and at the time I may have been the only person in Hawaii who was absolutely blown away by this band.

In the years to come, the early promise of this record was more than fulfilled with album after album full of incredible music that smashed the barriers between genres and styles, always anchored by Chris Squire’s powerful, innovative bass lines. And that tone! A growling, deep bass that somehow cut through all of the other instrumentation and existed in its own unique sonic space. I’d never heard anything like it.

As a young musician I was influenced by this group perhaps more than any other, and tried in my own way to explore the same endless landscapes of imaginative music they pioneered. (And I used to badger every bass player I worked with, to try to get them to duplicate Chris’s tone.) The video above is a fantastic live performance of “I’ve Seen All Good People,” from their 2002 reunion concert with a full orchestra.

Today we got word that Chris Squire has died at the age of 67 of a rare form of leukemia, and in a way I feel like part of my young adulthood died with him. It’s hard to express how much the music he created meant to me.

So long, Chris. You were one of the all-time best.

Yes, my mom died from leukemia in her early 70’s. It’s pretty awful. RIP.

As a drummer, I felt the same way about Bill Buford. I liked his style and sound so much better than White’s and I was really glad when he connected with King Crimson (I still have a 45 of ‘Hell’s Bells’ from Buford’s first solo record).

Roundabout. Killer bass. One of my favorites back then from that album that frequently blasted from my Bradley U dorm room. RIP

I’m reminded of how I felt each time big names from the two big bands of my youth - The Who & The Clash - died too young. First Kieth Moon, then John Entwistle & then John Graham Mellor aka Joe Strummer, my own guitar hero. Yes was always something I liked but it was a different thing, I could never imagine being that good. Too much the old punker in that respect.

I think I need to go play Joe’s rhythm part from London Calling and remember all these musicians.

5 A Cranky One  Jun 28, 2015 4:30:35pm

This news makes me very sad. I’ve long been a fan of Chris’s bass playing and the tunes he and the band cranked out. Still remember hearing Close to the Edge on a great system when it first came out and thinking “Wow!”.

Chris inspired me to learn bass and I can still play a lot of old Yes tunes (although without the virtuosity or tone of Chris). Upon hearing the news of his passing, went down to the man cave, grabbed a bass and tried out the bass lines from a number of old Yes tunes. Was amazed how well the fingers remembered; the tunes really stuck with me.

The world of music is a poorer place tonight.

My only real exposure to Yes was in the 80’s so I’m not all that familiar with their music. Never owned any of their albums. Never saw them live. Still, I know a fair amount of musicians and they’re saddened by this news today.

I’ll say this much — fuck cancer. It’s horrible.

I am reminded of how old I am by the passing of those whose talent and visions formed the backdrop and soundtrack of my earlier years. I consider myself fortunate to have personally watched up close so many marvelous performers and bands. Yes was a fabulous group to witness live. The best bands always are. Go see one. Get your memories.

Chris Squire will be missed.
The first concert I ever went to was Yes, July 3 1971, the Houston Coliseum.

16 Backwoods_Sleuth  Jun 28, 2015 4:57:55pm

Biden’s attendance, along with his son and daughter-in-law Hunter and Kathleen, was meant to be a show of solidarity, he said, but it also was an effort to lift him and his family up during their time of grief.

“The reason we came was to draw strength from all of you, draw some strength from the church,” he said, noting that he had spoken and or met with each of the nine victim’s families since their losses. “I wish I could say something that would ease the pains of the families and of the church. But I know from experience, and I was reminded of it again 29 days ago, that no words can mend a broken heart. No music can fill the gaping void.”

Really sad news. Squire was one of the best rock bassists (if not necessarily the most well-known). More of a alt-rocker myself but Yes is one of those bands that hold a special place for me. Glad to say I got to see Chris, Jon, and the gang play live (Universal Amphitheater ‘02). “Close to the Edge,” “Awaken,” and “South Side of the Sky” are some of my favorites. RIP Mr. Squire.

Charles,

You actually got the “Yes” album for .99 in a cut bin?

That’s a crime. That album deserved full price no matter what. Not only was Squire great, but Bil Buford and Tony Kaye added a lot to that band, as did Steve Howe. I liked other Yes albums, but the first one was more earthy and set a new standard in musicianship.

stpaulbear,

I play drums. Bill Buford was always the model of drummer I wanted to be. He could do more with a four piece kit, a high-hat and two cymbals than a lot of guys can with a massive double bass, four mounted toms, two floor toms and a series of timbales, with 8 cymbals and various other toys. He wasn’t just a drummer, he was a percussionist. I loved some of syncopated beats and his great mastering of the high hat. In somewhat the same style was Billy Ficca of Television. Always my two faves.

“…According to authorities, the two men walked into the Walmart on Highway 49 around 8 p.m. Witnesses said the man holding the shotgun was actively loading and racking the firearm. Walmart does not have a policy about guns inside its stores.

“If I were in a situation where I’m in the store shopping with my family and I see an individual loading a 12 gauge, and racking it, I’m not coming to the conclusion this is good,” said Papania. “While the actions of these two men are sanctioned by state laws, what they did negatively impacted our community.”

Oh, And before anyone asks. Yes I worked with Kitta, No I don’t know why exactly he was termed (and even if I did, wouldn’t talk about it). So don’t ask. I do wish him well in his future endeavors.

I can give you the full story if you’d like. Feel free to DM me on Twitter for my phone #. Would love to stay in touch. I’ll have more time for LGF and other stuff now, so at least there’s that.

Ultimately though, I just couldn’t work with the swing team, and they refused to let me transfer to another shift to avoid them. They didn’t feel I was repairing my relationships with them fast enough, wasn’t internalizing the blame for the problems on swings (because it’s my fault M was using his cellphone all the time and W was ignoring the floor to play with his oscilloscope, donchaknow), and despite giving me 2 months they punted me after 2 weeks.

The conspiracy nutjob was the really bad one. He kinda lost it after the last screaming match 2 months ago. After that he complained about me every single time he could, including on some documentation, which is where Big C got involved, I believe.

I should have went to HR immediately at the latest screaming match citing the hostile work environment on swings. I should have a long time ago.

Shelton Laurel massacre

The Shelton Laurel massacre was the execution of 13 accused Union sympathizers on or about January 18, 1863 by a Confederate regiment in the Shelton Laurel Valley of Madison County, North Carolina at the height of the American Civil War.

The hills were alive with anti-rebel rebels and the secessionists were having none of it. Among other things, Confederate troops whipped and hanged an 85 year old woman in an attempt to get information on the Unionists’ hideout.

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, a prospective Republican presidential contender, said Saturday he does not know whether President Obama is a Christian.

“I don’t know,” Walker said in an interview at the JW Marriott hotel in Washington, where he was attending the winter meeting of the National Governors Association.

Told that Obama has frequently spoken publicly about his Christian faith, Walker maintained that he was not aware of the president’s religion.

I remember my Dad telling me a story about how in the mid 70’s he was driving with his Dad and saw a Reagan for President sticker. Had to be ‘76 when he primaried Jerry Ford since my grandfather died in late 79 but anyhow my Dad just laughed “Reagan for president, come on.” And my grandfather who was a federal government lifer and had seen how the right had gone from being Eisenhower and even Nixon to what Reagan represented told him that it could happen. He never did live to see it and it angers me everytime seeing how Reagan destroyed the legacy of pro-labor work by the government by men like my grandfather. They really do think this country was only made for them and it’s why they’re theo-fascists.

I always thought a big a part of being a Christian was not to judge. And hate also has no part of being Christian.

These folks are the evil. They are fascists. And I am pretty damn sure God would have no part of that.

Reagan, of course being our only former Union president to be president. Oh the irony.

I won’t say it’s impossible for Walker to be president, because anything can happen in the next 15 months. But I will say that what makes him appealing to the party base also makes it much more difficult to win the general election. Case in point, his popularity back home has cratered in recent months, which will hurt him as it is rare for a nominee to win the presidency while losing his home state.

I agree. He’s got a difficult road ahead of him but let’s be clear they all do. Obama’s created quite the coalition. I also think Hillary will get some people who have either stayed home or voted R to return to the Dem fold. Hate to say it but I think she’ll win back parts of the white working class that have never trusted Obama that much. Note- not saying all white working class folks hate or mistrust Obama but this was his weakness as a primary candidate and why Hillary beat him in the rust belt. My grandmother is a lot more excited for Hillary than she ever was Obama.

I started getting into the Adrian Belew era of King Crimson a couple of years ago, after I found this video. Bill Bruford is all over the place here.

re: #187 Targetpractice

You’re looking at him from the viewpoint of some with half a brain. To a wingnut, he seems like electoral gold, because he’s a simple, “down to earth” kinda guy who takes pride in being a college drop-out and whose unapologetic approach to unions is enough to overlook that he’s selling off bits of his state to the highest bidder while tanking the economy.

I guess we will see. I have a gut feeling once he gets really going he is will screw up bad. He can mouth off unchallenged all he wants. That is going to change when others have a go at him. He seems to practice what he is going to say. Scripted. Just like this comment we are discussing. He’s heard it before and he runs with it because he thinks it will sell. Let’s see how he does when he is taken off his prepared script and has to really think on his feet. I don’t think he can.

I think some heat will cause some melting. I’d start with asking him why his poll numbers in his own state are falling and why everyone is concerned with what he is doing with education and a once great university and why good teachers are taking flight. Also why are tax cuts creating big budget problems in some states and how that might play out in his own state.

And with that…see you all later. Running out of gas.

I think (well, hope) that by the primaries he’ll be in hot water due to one or more of the scandals that have been bubbling around him and his staff. He may not get prosecuted for it (given the judges in WI), but I think that he’ll be up to his neck in something stinky before he can get nominated.

He’s not really faced very strong opponents, and the recall election dragged on long enough that he was able to turn it around on Democrats by arguing that they were pushing forward a recall vote when he hadn’t even finished a full term.

A couple of weeks ago I posted (sort of out of the blue) that if I were drafting bass players I would have taken Chris Squire first. The way I think of him is that he brought the state of the bass from a percussion type instrument into the the heart of the melody and chords. I think examples of this would be Close to the Edge, Heart of the Sunrise, and Rituals. I also loved it when he would drop down to the end of the neck and underline the music.

For some reason, this album wasn’t well received. But this tune was a standout.

Enjoy! I know I am. Fripps guitar playing is just scrumptious.

The band on this album is:

Robert Fripp - guitar, mellotron, harmonium (track 6), sundry implements
Peter Sinfield - words, sounds and visions
Mel Collins - saxophones, flute, bass flute (track 6), backing vocals
Ian Wallace - drums, percussion, backing vocals
Boz Burrell - bass guitar, lead vocals, choreography

The 10th doesn’t enter into this discussion, because the decision involved the 14th amendment. People should not have to make a state-by-state appeal for their rights to be protected by law. SCOTUS did nothing in this ruling that wouldn’t have been equally lambasted if, for example, Congress had passed a law recognizing same-sex marriage in all 50 states. The only major difference is that the states can’t challenge this decision in the courts.

re: #257 Targetpractice

The 10th doesn’t enter into this discussion, because the decision involved the 14th amendment. People should not have to make a state-by-state appeal for their rights to be protected by law. SCOTUS did nothing in this ruling that wouldn’t have been equally lambasted if, for example, Congress had passed a law recognizing same-sex marriage in all 50 states. The only major difference is that the states can’t challenge this decision in the courts.

The Right didn’t complain much when SCOTUS trampled on states rights to create an individual right to virtually unrestricted gun ownership, did they?

To extra pedantic, cobalt is a metal and is therefore not diatomic. Oh, and neither plants nor anything else living need it for survival. Learn to chemistry.

Morning!

Well, it looks like Johnny Kasich is going to jump in and grab a seat on the clown bus.

He is set to announce July 21 and will be announcing it in the Ohio State University’s cool new student union. Well, the building is cool, Kasich not so much.

He is going to run as The Experienced Moderate and his big thing will be…

…wait for it…

…A Balanced Budget™

Politico has an article up…

Politico - John Kasich to announce presidential bid July 21

From that article:

—-CUT—-

Kasich, who graduated from Ohio State in 1974, can expect an excited crowd in the Buckeye capital. He’ll follow his kickoff rally with an announcement tour that includes Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina and Michigan.

The GOP talent pool is getting shallow, with so many credible candidates vying for the nomination. But Kasich landed two of the best-known names in Republican politics:

His chief strategist will be John Weaver, mastermind of John McCain’s insurgent campaigns of 2000 and 2008. And the lead consultant for Kasich’s super PAC, New Day for America, will be ad maker Fred Davis, based in the Hollywood Hills, who worked on McCain ‘08 and has had several viral hits. Both worked on Jon Huntsman’s presidential campaign in 2012.

Matt Carle, who ran Kasich’s successful reelection campaign, will play a role on the campaign or at the super PAC.

An adviser said Kasich will be positioned “in Jeb’s back right pocket” - with establishment appeal, but slightly more conservative.
Kasich has made his hunger for the job apparent in recent months, with a series of interviews, stops in D.C., and visits to early states.

In a May interview with Jonathan Karl on ABC’s “This Week,” Kasich said: “I’ve been very pleased with what I’ve found out on the ground in New Hampshire, South Carolina, Michigan. … I hope people will help me, if they like my sort of unique voice in this whole thing, and we look at organization. … I [am] increasingly optimistic about all of this.”

Kasich called himself “the most experienced in the field, with being an executive running a big state like Ohio, dealing with problems like [shootings by police in] Cleveland. At the same time, being in Congress, balancing the budget — I was the chairman — and also serving on the defense committee for 18 years.”

Acknowledging he’s an underdog, Kasich said: “You know the way this system works. You know, you go to New Hampshire and you do well and you’re on a rocket ship.”

Asked about being the vice-presidential nominee, Kasich replied: “Forget it. … Forget it. … Forget it, Jon. I don’t play for seconds.”

Jonathan Karl said with a laugh: “I’m going to save this tape.”

Yeah. He is a cocky son of a gun.

Edit to add link.

Dayum…. Another life taken too soon due to the scourge of cancer. RIP Chris Squire.

I have known far too many lives snuffed out from cancer, and am thankful for those who have survived, whether it is a blood cancer like leukemia or NHL or breast cancer (any one of its forms, and until someone you know who gets it, you don’t realize just how many varieties there are like HER+ or HER- or where in the breast the cancer is identified).

That’s why the fact that so many people oppose the Gardisil vaccine is just mind boggling. This is a vaccine that can prevent certain forms of cancer. Prevent.

Yeah, it also stops certain STDs, but it also stops cancer. I would kill to have a vaccine like that for breast cancer. So too would millions of women (and their spouses, children, parents, and siblings) who have suffered from the effects of the disease, the treatments, and those who have seen it metastasize. Mets are the worst. Bone mets are the worst of the worse, and to have a vaccine would be a godsend.

That’s ultimately what researchers are hoping to accomplish, but for now, we’re still facing an uphill struggle especially when the diseases are identified in later stages. Early stage cancers are quite survivable now, but your chances go down severely the later you catch them - that’s why pancreatic cancer is so devastating. You don’t realize that there’s something wrong until there’s pretty much nothing you can do except provide palliative care.

The short response is Fuck Cancer.

How did wingnuts hate Obama when he was a member at Rev. Wright’s Christian church because of the “God Damn America” preaching and now claim he is not a Christian?

Even Scooter Walker mentioned he didn’t know if Obama was a Christian the other day.

Oh wait…I know. Black preachers that say “God Damn America” are not Christian either and because of that none of those church members are Christians.

Taken further RWNJs probably think Blacks in general are not Christians.

Calls liberalism an illness while crying about being likened to Dylann Roof. I actually don’t blame all conservatives for Dylann Roof, that would be absurd but do I blame years of demonizing blacks on the news and politics by right wing pundits and politicians, damn straight I do.

Dylann Roof was influenced by the “Black crime” memes

One of the nation’s themes when I was growing up was, “You might even grow up to be the President.” Now that we have someone in office who actually proved that it could be done despite huge obstacles the RW hates him for it because he isn’t white.
There are times when I do wish that Lincoln had allowed the Confederacy to just go its own way to inevitable collapse and then allowed those states to rejoin the Union upon their humble petitions to do so.

By doing that remember he would be allowing more people to be enslaved. I understand what you’re getting at but man you’re right. Obama is living proof more than any president that any child can dream of being president. They could see him as an example of the American dream but they and their pathetic base hates him so much that they will do anything to demean him and what he’s accomplished. They hate him not merely as a president but as a man.

He was going on about the fact Obama as recently as 2012 was still saying marriage was between one man and one woman and it was Joe Biden that put Obama in a tough spot. He then said Biden was an outcast in the White House for some time because of that.

And, all you people putting down the Republicans now just need to remember all that!!!

I guess he means the Republicans will come around…or something.

359 Backwoods_Sleuth  Jun 29, 2015 7:30:17am

Arizona redistricting affirmed 5-4, Ginsberg writing.

Background on the AZ decision: The Constitution’s Elections Clause provides that the “Times, Places, and Manner of holding Elections for … Representatives, shall be prescribed in each state by the Legislature thereof.” In 2000, Arizona voters amended the state’s constitution to give control over redistricting of federal congressional districts to an independent commission. This case is a challenge by the state legislature to that transfer, on the ground that it violated the Elections Clause.

The Court has several times refused to address the question whether partisan gerrymandering violates the Constitution. This decision gives the states an opportunity to deal with partisan gerrymandering by giving an independent commission power to draw federal congressional districts. - See more at: live.scotusblog.com

Yet the administration was arguing against DOMA in the courts. I have a really hard time believing that Biden’s declaration made the administration that uncomfortable. And yes it’s true Obama was saying that in 2012 and I do wish he had come along earlier but at the same time, I appreciate and value results over rhetoric. I see a president that has done more on this issue than any other president by far. MBFs love to go “Well ya know Dick Cheney supported gay marriage before Obama so you can’t call it a liberal or conservative issue.” And it’s like okay, DIck Cheney was the most active VP I can think of in recent memory and yet he did not object or not do anything while George W. Bush pushed a federal ban on same sex marriage and while the RNC fully encouraged bans on same sex marriage. And I see the Kochs get credited for supporting SSM too. Okay, they support it so much that they continue to give their money to candidates that not only oppose SSM but also civil unions. As I said, actions more than rhetoric. And this is something I’ll also bring up since you have one of the few Republican senators that is pro-gay marriage but what has Senator Portman done since he declared his support?

Good decision! California put redistricting into the hands of a non-partisan commission and I feel that we came out better for it. In our case, the lege had over the years divvied up the state into safe districts for each party which resulted in legislative paralysis.

From the final paragraph of the majority opinion: “The people of Arizona turned to the initiative to curb the practice of gerrymandering and, thereby, to ensure that Members of Congress would have “an habitual recollection of their dependence on the people.” The Federalist No. 57, at 350 (J. Madison). In so acting, Arizona voters sought to restore “the core principle of republican government,” namely, “that the voters should choose their representatives, not the other way around.” Berman, Managing Gerrymandering, 83 Texas L. Rev. 781 (2005). The Elections Clause does not hinder that endeavor.” - See more at: live.scotusblog.com

377 Backwoods_Sleuth  Jun 29, 2015 7:39:07am
The EPA must consider costs before deciding whether regulation is appropriate and necessary; it will up to the agency to decide, within limits of reasonable interpretation, how to account for costs.

A little bit more detail: This case arises from the EPA’s efforts to regulate pollution - and in particular mercury - from power plants. The question before the Court was whether, when determining whether to regulate the emissions from power plants, the EPA should take into account the cost to the plants of complying. States and industry groups had argued that the EPA must do so, while the EPA argued that it does not have to consider costs until later in the process, when it issues specific pollution standards. Today the Court agreed with the states and industry groups, holding that the EPA’s refusal to consider costs when deciding whether to regulate was unreasonable. - See more at: live.scotusblog.com

The stock market is down because of events transpiring in Greece, which had been predicted for weeks and months (and years). The Greeks are between the proverbial rock and hard place with an inability to pay obligations and the lack of resources or means to force a new deal with better terms. So, the Greeks without means put runs on the banks and other tangible assets (food, gas, etc.) while the banks and stock market shuttered while the politicians wondered who would make the tough decisions - and there’s still a referendum to address.

So, this sent ripples through world markets, and there’s questions about how Portugal, Spain, and Ireland might react given that they’ve been in similar straits for a while now.

I don’t see Greece exiting the euro, because any new currency will be still nearly worthless and the Greeks will rely more on the more stable euro or dollar while the new currency suffers.

Roberts refers to Arizona as “chumps” and independent redistricting commissions as a “deliberate constitutional evasion” of the 17th Amendment. (page 40).

Native American Council Offers Amnesty to 240 Million Undocumented Whites

The Native American National Council will offer amnesty to the estimated 240 million illegal white immigrants living in the United States.

At a meeting on Friday in Taos, New Mexico, Native American leaders weighed a handful of proposals about the future of the United State’s large, illegal European population. After a long debate, NANC decided to extend a road to citizenship for those without criminal records or contagious diseases.

I’ll read it more carefully tomorrow, but it seems Roberts is objecting to the duty of the Legislature to draw up districts being assigned an non-elected commission appointed by the Legislature.

In other words, he seems to be saying the AZ leg should negotiate the districts in chamber, and then vote on the EDs. Like any leg in the history of this world could ever get something so complex done in a timely fashion.

This is so stupid on so many levels. A),SSM has already been legal in most states and B) If these lawsuits did happen, of course they would mostly be against Christians. There are considerably more churches than mosques. God do these people even fucking think? Don’t answer that because that’s a purely rhetorical question. NO: the only places that have seen these type of suits are in The Netherlands and the UK where they have Official State Churches.

These people continue to confuse the sacrament of Holy Matrimony with the civil status of marriage. I can understand to a degree, as the two used to be nearly identical, and a lot of these people are still a few decades/centuries behind recent developments.

But the point is that we live in a secular state where you are free to deny people the sacrament of Matrimony or refuse to recognize them as being married in the eyes of God. The SCOTUS has just made it clear that we have to see them as married in the eyes of the Law.

Greece got in the trouble it did because quite simply, it wasn’t anywhere close to the EMU criteria when it signed up……this, of course, was after they’d cooked the books (in collusion with Goldman-Sachs) and bamboozled the rest of the EU that they were good to go.

How about the fact that Greeks consider taxes to be theft. The long tradition of tax avoidance and loopholes certainly hasn’t helped.

Not necessarily. I think the Euro as a currency can survive without Greece, to be honest. Indeed, most Czechs I spoke to today are looking forward to Greece exiting the Eurozone - they feel that Greece is a deadweight, an albatross around the neck of the rest of Europe.

To be sure, the Euro would be under pressure and may even achieve parity with the USD again, but that’s a matter for the ECB to deal with. As long they have the political will to keep the Eurozone project going, it’ll keep going.

Some Kentucky county clerks refuse to issue marriage licenses following same-sex marriage ruling

Defying the instructions of Gov. Steve Beshear, several county clerks around Kentucky said they won’t issue marriage licenses anymore because of the U.S. Supreme Court’s 5-to-4 ruling Friday in favor of a nationwide right to same-sex marriage.

Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis said Monday that her Christian beliefs won’t allow her to give marriage licenses to gay men or lesbians seeking to marry a member of the same sex. Rather than face claims of discrimination, her office in Morehead is refusing marriage licenses to all couples until further notice, Davis said.

“We’ve not had any applicants yet, but we’ve had several calls,” said Davis, 49, a Democrat who took office in January.

It’s all the same for them: “The world is the way we say it is and we won’t stand for any argument.” The jokes about them attempting to repeal gravity or the Second Law of Thermodynamics aren’t far off the mark.

What amuses me is when they complain about colleges indoctrinating young people and then looking at what conservative institutions do to dissenting voices. Some of the academics have challenged me the most on my beliefs have been people if David Horowitz had his way would want to run out of a job because of their personal beliefs.

Only libs indoctrinate. Wingnuts who would fire liberal academics or say they’re unpatriotic are not indoctrinating in any way about how great America is and how slavery wasn’t bad and how all the Founders were evangelical Christians.

Here’s another hypothetical but let’s say I run a print shop. I would be wrong to deny an anti gay rights customer the ability to use my machines to make copies for fliers. It’s the same deal with the so called Christian bakers who want to deny gay couples wedding cakes because they’re opposed to gay marriage. Okay, you may be personally opposed to gay marriage and that is your right but you’re operating as a baker, baking a secular good. Just as in my printer scenario, the paper I am letting you make copies on isn’t political paper.

Afternoon Lizardim from the warm and humid wild north country. Summer is certainly getting into full swing up here. I wanted to share with you a post from my pastor on the recent Supreme Court decision, illustrating the point that I have been trying to make over the years.

In light of the recent supreme court decision regarding homosexual marriage, I would like to take a moment to highlight how I handle difficult questions regarding biblical matters. There are certain matters of faith that I am willing to die for. Matters such as salvation by faith in Christ alone. Then there matters I will debate. These are the matters where the bible gives direction but it could be understood and even applied differently. Then there are biblical matters I will discuss. They are not salvation issues to die over or even strong debate issues because there is no way of knowing the answer. Its interesti g to discuss when Jesus will return, but its not worth debating or dying over. The issue of homosexual marriage is worth debating. I refuse to die over it, but I will debate it. When Christians make this an issue to die over the body of Christ suffers. I am all for debating this issue in love because I love people, even those who disagree with me or I with them. Since sharing my opinion, I have been unfriended and attacked personally and as a pastor by Christians and non christians. I have been surprised and deeply saddened by the attacks from christians. We can and should be able to debate this in love without personal attack. I suggest we all all agree to responding with love even if we strongly disagree in our positions.

How go things among the lizardfolk on this steamy summer day?

Your pastor sounds like a reasonable guy. I just find it hard to reason with people who see gay marriage as Bryan Fischer called it a “moral 9/11” or Ted Cruz who called “one of the darkest days in our nation’s history.” I will disagree with you if you feel same sex marriage goes against your religious beliefs but I will also add in strong language often that religion and law are not the same. You can continue to have your church not to perform same sex marriages, I think personally it’s a dick move but I can’t say you can’t do that but when you want that to be matter of state and federal law, that’s when I object.

re: #45 Charles Johnson

Nobody had ever heard of Yes at that point. It was in the cut-out bin because it hadn’t sold in their regular racks.

I knew right away this was a band that was going to do great stuff. I found a lot of gems in those cut-out racks that nobody else seemed to be interested in.

In the age of vinyl, cut-outs (usually distinguished by a hole drilled thru an upper corner of the LP) were considered “free goods” on which the record label didn’t have to pay royalties.

Free goods (to the artists and their accountants that paid attention) drove the recording artist nuts.

Cut-outs were generated by:

1.Unsold LP returns to the label (only in America) who drilled the albums and in turn sold them at a discount to a One Stop distributor.

2, Cut-outs sent to a regional label promotion person, who gave them away to radio stations, and what was left over sold to a one stop distributor, to put some money in the pocket of the PR guy.

It wasn’t unknown for a label to send the promotion guy well in excess of what was needed to service the radio stations in his market, to put some tax-free cash in his pocket as a incentive or bonus.

Meanwhile the artist didn’t collect royalties on any of the cut-outs.

With zero recognition from the overwhelming majority of voters, Newland is campaigning solely through internet networking.

Nor will CNN be addressing the matter. When asked whether it would issue a statement or otherwise do any interviews on the flag mess, a CNN spokeswoman e-mailed, “no.”

That’s piling one mistake atop another. Given that we’re talking about a mistake that occurred on a Saturday involving a satirical flag festooned with images of sex toys, it’s tempting to laugh off the whole matter — which is what CNN appears to be doing. Yet the tone of the report from anchor Suzanne Malveaux and Pawle was anything but jocular. Team CNN couldn’t fathom why more people weren’t alarmed by the situation and it ran photos of what CNN would have you believe was an Islamic State supporter. Plenty of material to retract, in other words.

Denying you mistook a flag with dildos and buttplugs for an ISIS flag isn’t going to make you less ridiculed, it will increase it.

Allen West’s official website already implying pedophiles are trying to legalize their activities

Using the same tactics used by “gay” rights activists, pedophiles have begun to seek similar status arguing their desire for children is a sexual orientation no different than heterosexual or homosexuals.

Critics of the homosexual lifestyle have long claimed that once it became acceptable to identify homosexuality as simply an “alternative lifestyle” or sexual orientation, logically nothing would be off limits.

re: #792 Dr Lizardo

You know, I wonder what the wingnuts are gonna do if something happens to Tony Scalia over the summer recess? After all, that means President Obama will replace his appointment. And that’s gonna be tough, with a GOP Senate.

Really tough.

They’d make it a battle for sure. I’d take another Kennedy type over Scalia’s constant bitter state.

Scalia: “Perhaps JUSTICE BREYER is more enlightened than those who, like Kant, believe death is only just punishment for taking a life.”

Today’s SCOTUS: using court opinions to sling childish insults at fellow justices.

Whose lives shall be taken for the innocents executed?

I could probably think of a few, if I put my mind to it.

The Court’s stay of the Texas abortion restrictions law makes it all but certain that the Justices will take up abortion rights next term.

If SCOTUS does take up abortion rights then it may hand down its decision after all of the Republican primaries. Interesting.

Let me enumerate the number of fucks I have to give about an anti-Semitic philosopher who died over 200 years ago.

re: #773 calochortus

Not an insult, necessarily. Kant lived and died in the 18th century, did he not? I’d like to think we have moved forward since then. Scalia apparently doesn’t ever want to move forward.

My favourite writer loathes Kant.

KANT, IMMANUEL A swamp that has seeped into our minds and separated the intellect from reality.

Genius, well intentioned, devoted to the supreme principal of morality. And yet this charming man became the Thomas Aquinas of Reason.

… Less than a century after others had made a concerted and partly successful effort to free philosophy from the controls of mediaeval scholasticism he dragged it back into hermetic dialect.

Kant systemized reason. Divided it into different types. Sought to defend the independence of science and of morality. But this systemization encouraged those who followed to develop impenetrable separations between reality and the intellect which could disarm philosophy as a public weapon.

From The Doubter’s Companion.

So sick of Scalia’s unprofessional attitude. Disagree if you do but he always have to be a prick. Ok so Breyer opposes the dp and Kant didn’t, plenty of other philosophers would agree with Breyer but you don’t see Breyer doing that shit.

Interesting how he shows his contempt for virtually every other justice (and for that matter, virtually all of the rest of America) in his writing.

Isn’t that one of the defining traits of the wingnut species? That it hisses and twitches manically when threatened.

Sort of the same way the horned toad squirts blood from its eyes.

I see 5-4 ruling in its future. /Great Karnak (though it doesn’t take a genius to see the writing on this wall). The court is essentially predisposed to this outcome, though how the question presents itself may turn it from 5-4 to 6-3. As usual, it will be Kennedy as the swing vote, and Roberts may be the one who goes from 5-4 to 6-3. Alito, Thomas, and Scalia are bereft of any logic and will insist that if it’s not in the Constitution word for word that the right doesn’t exist, even as they proffered any number of recent cases, up to and including Citizens United, where they extended rights to corporations that never existed.

The details just don’t work out for some people.

Including details like the fact that the whole “by their creator” was from the Declaration of Independence, not the Constitution which doesn’t mention God at all, except to outlaw religious tests for office. But who cares if you can’t keep your founding documents straight as long as you can pull a pithy quote up to justify your bigotry.
