South Carolina Will Allow Ku Klux Klan Rally at Capitol to Protest Removal of Confederate Flag

Group calls Dylann Roof “a young warrior”
US News • Views: 82,481

Here’s one of those stories that makes you just say, “Good grief.” The North Carolina branch of the KKK, who call themselves “The Loyal White Knights of the Ku Klux Klan,” has been granted a permit to hold a rally on the grounds of the South Carolina Statehouse on July 18th.

They’re upset about the possible removal of the Confederate flag, and they’ve called alleged mass murderer Dylann Roof “a young warrior.”

Robert Jones, grand dragon for the group, said on Monday that the Klan is a civil rights organization dedicated to white culture and history as symbolized by the rebel banner.

During a phone interview, Jones gave words of support for Roof, saying he erred in going after black people while they worshipped. On the Klan group’s telephone answering machine is a recorded message that refers to Roof as a warrior.

[…]

“He was heading in the right direction; wrong target,” Jones said. “He should have actually aimed at the African-American gang-bangers, the ones who are selling the drugs to white youth, the ones who are robbing and raping every chance they get.”

In the US, hate speech is legally protected unless it amounts to an immediate incitement to violence etc.

In Germany, an equivalent public demonstration by Nazis or neo-Nazis would be illegal.

I can’t really think of a good reason why US law is better than German law with respect to such demonstrations.

My take on this rally is different. More in the line with “Please proceed…”. Let the Klan rally, wave the Confederate flag and protest its removal.

Then show the film to anyone who claims the flag isn’t a racist symbol.

In practical terms, their turnout for the last 20 years has revealed their weakness. If that changes, the demonstration is a metric.

Good point. Racism is so mainstreamed in the right wing that more folks may be willing to show it. Let’s hope the turnout is as pitiful as the participants.

During the 60s Civil Rights era, “respectable” southern whites generally reviled the Klan as “trash” and “low class,” which they certainly were.

What the genteel folk did not say was that the Klan provided the hidden muscle behind the gentry who made up the White Citizen’s Councils, the Sovereignty Commission, and all the other machinery of institutional racism.

It was yet another iteration of the ancient theme of plausible deniability, and it continues in various forms to the present day.

Go ahead and bring out as many Klu Klux Klowns as they can dig up. The more the merrier. Put on as big and loud a protest as you can.

Unlike some down south saying the flag is not a racist statement…there is very little doubt throughout America the Klan is indeed racist.

This demonstration will cast no doubt why they are defending the flag.

It is racism.

This settles any doubt.

And they are too stupid to see that.

My farm has an interesting history.
It was part of a several-thousand-acre land grant back in the 1700s and stayed in that family until I bought the last remaining ~200 acres (including the pre-Civil War house) 20+ years ago.
There was a thriving community here during abolition times, when the original family sheltered escaping slaves. I still stumble over remnants of those small houses hidden away in the hollers and coves.
Then, in the 1940s, the matriarch of the family founded the first local chapter of the KKK.

People are strange.

Chuck Johnson has a new interview on Twitter, on a Fresno public access channel. He spews racism, of course. Supports the Confederate flag, says Donald Trump was right about Mexicans being rapists and criminals, says he’s going to win his lawsuit against Gawker, says blacks are genetically disposed to violence, the usual awful crap.

But there’s one interesting tidbit in it — he apparently lost his book deal with St. Martin’s Press for “Oppo Man,” because he says he’s shopping around his book to various publishers. I’d love to know the backstory on why that deal fell apart.

I didn’t say I want the state to censor speech - I said I don’t know what the solution is. And I don’t. But I do know that it’s become increasingly dangerous to allow hate groups free reign - and I think one reason is the media’s “view from nowhere” in which they present all opinions and views as morally equivalent and never express any judgment.

I think we all have to treat them the same way we do trolls here and people like Chuck. You can’t ignore them, because they won’t go away. You attack them the way we have been doing recently with things like calling the Confederate flag is the flag of traitors. You don’t let them get away with the stuff.

The problem we’re going to have over the next few weeks is not just the people who want to say it’s not a problem, but those that decide they are tired of fighting it. We have to keep reminding these people that the only way to end this is to fight it.

What we will have to do is show the flag wavers that they are not free from the consequences of their speech. Politicians who support them will have to be called on it. Business that support it will have to be singled out.

I don’t know what Robert Jones does for a living, but if it’s a business he owns it needs to be boycotted, and if he’s employed, then his employer needs to be made to let him go.

I think the best model for this would be the Stop Rush campaign.

My hope is the masses get sick enough of crap like this and they make the right decisions in spite of our funky media.

The only way we will get a critical media back again is when they get the numbers to make enough money off of making those judgments and they get over the numbers that they see FOX gets.

We all say FOX will fade as their viewers grow old and pass. At that point even FOX will need to change too.

yes and yes.

My favorite “ghost” is a scent. Every autumn (around hog slaughter time) we smell hickory smoke. A very strong scent of hickory smoke, right near where the smokehouse is (it’s now a root cellar, pumphouse for the well and power room for the solar batteries).

We also have a “thieving ghost” that steals things and replaces the stolen item with something it had previously stolen.

There is also faint music from time to time, and sounds of doors shutting and walking up stairs, neither of which exist anymore inside the house.

re: #59 Charles Johnson

I get that there’s difficulty in trying to figure out what an appropriate response is to those who spew this kind of noxious speech, and we do have a healthy respect for the 1A, which means that there are limits to what we can do.

I also think you’ve got a good point that some of the current problem is that the media have decided to treat all opinions as valid, even as some clearly aren’t or shouldn’t be valid. In their attempt to be “nonpartisan” they’ve given positions that shouldn’t have any exposure the light of day to give them support that they otherwise shouldn’t have.

Positions that might otherwise be limited to a guy shouting at passersby on the street corner can now shout out to millions of people (see Jones, Alex; Beck, Glenn; Trump, Donald, etc.)

I still think speech is answered by speech, but the Internet really taxes that position to the limit.

70 Belafon  Jun 29, 2015 6:14:39pm

A counter-rally across from the KKK on that day would be one way to protest.

Back in 1988 the KKK tried to hold a march in Abilene, TX. The city was, and probably still is, fairly well segregated. But even though the city said they would authorize it, enough people showed up at the beginning of the march to cancel it.

71 jaunte  Jun 29, 2015 6:21:26pm

I imagine there are hundreds and hundreds of examples of local media reporting on the confederate flag story who have let people talk about ‘heritage not hate’ without any sidebar or even informative comment about exactly what heritage was being defended by flying the flag of a rebellion against the national government.

Video obtained by WIS shows a man getting out of his vehicle and approaching the group of “Take It Down” protestors when words were exchanged and a fight broke out.

The Bureau of Protective Services intervened and the man who got out of his vehicle was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct.

A Hard Day’s Work Deserves a Fair Day’s Pay

It’s been a good few days for America.

On Thursday, the Supreme Court reaffirmed the Affordable Care Act. It is here to stay.

And, Democrats and Republicans in Congress paved the way for the United States to rewrite the rules of global trade to benefit American workers and American businesses.

On Friday, the Court recognized the Constitutional guarantee of marriage equality. With that ruling, our union became a little more perfect — a place where more people are treated equally, no matter who they are or who they love.

These steps build upon America’s steady progress in recent years. Out of the depths of recession, we’ve emerged ready to write our own future. Our businesses have created 12.6 million new jobs over the past 63 months — the longest streak on record. More than 16 million Americans have gained health insurance. More kids are graduating from high school and college than ever before.

I had to go to another town to pick up my copy new. I’m glad I made the effort (driving to brick-and-mortar always disappoints). “The United States at Mid-Century”, the 2nd or 3rd chapter, has already blown my mind. I knew a lot of this stuff in the factual sense but that’s not the same thing as having a good author paint a picture with everything in context.

Personal favorite astonishing fact so far: Prior to the “transportation revolution” of the 1800’s, the cost to move goods 30 miles inland from a port was the same as the cost of transporting it across the Atlantic in the first place! O_O Coming from New England (growing up within 30 miles of port city Boston), where the legacies of “old transport” bedrock the infrastructure in the same way glacial scars and conglomerate rocks mark the history of the land itself, facts like this give new meanings to all those commutes on Boston Post Road, and all the drives on winding cowpath roads in the woods.

If the rest of the book does for me what the first couple of chapters have, this is going to be a great read…

I know every one of those things is built to deliver a holocaust the same way you’d order a pizza… Make a phone call and boom, there it is… But they are still a damned impressive machine.

I took my concealed handgun course with an older guy who had flown B-52s on long armed-alert racetrack patrols up north (he also flew C-130s into Khe Sanh - he had a few stories!). I asked him about how the B-52 was to fly on alert, figuring it must have sucked to take a load of nukes for a walk for hours on end. He recounted that actually some of his favorite times flying were high up near the Arctic at 35-40,000 feet in a B-52, that you could trim it so it basically just hung up there flying itself. Then he’d just sit there and enjoy the view.

You’d never think of a bomber as big as a neighborhood being fun to fly, but he seemed to enjoy it. :)

re: #49 Charles Johnson

I’m guessing the publishers checked into the whole situation about Cocharan and realized most of what Chuck says in the book is BS. Chuck keeps referring to his now-disproved exposé about Cochran buying votes as a major success story, but it seems Cochran didn’t do what Chuck says he did.

Then there’s the baggage that Chuck brings along with him. I can’t imagine being his editor would be especially easy.

re: #37 Charles Johnson

I used to believe it was better to let hate groups like this expose themselves to the public. But I can’t really support that belief any more. In the Internet era it seems that groups like this actually gain strength when they’re allowed to demonstrate in public.

I don’t know what the solution is. But I think the classic model of absolutist free speech is dangerously insufficient in the modern age.

But the classic model is the one that is in the Constitution. And though I despise their beliefs to the core of my being, and though I think the Star and Bars needs to leave the S.C. state capitol, the KKK’s planned rally in support of keeping that flag there clearly stands as political speech, and unless said rally either becomes violent or incites violence, then it is protected by the 1st Amendment.

Again, I utterly loath the Ku Klux Klan, but my belief in the Constitution of the United States, the Constitution the Union Army fought to defend, means that the Klan’s rally must be allowed. However, it is my most earnest hope that the Klan and its supporters are outnumbered 10-1 by those who want the Confederate flag gone. Let vile speech be answered by more and better decent speech.

That actually doesn’t surprise me. I think part of the reason why millenials as a whole are more liberal bunch is because we’re a much more culturally diverse bunch.

142 HappyWarrior  Jun 29, 2015 8:09:09pm

Anyhow I see a little where Charles is coming from. I completely understand for example why Holocaust denial is illegal in most European nations, why the swastika is forbidden, etc. But I also see DF’s point about the Constitution too. Hate speech being criminalized is a hazy area for me since it seems to me that such a thing is subjective. I mean obviously there are things most of us can agree would qualify but there are some things that are a little more complicated. I also think it’s good to know who these people are too.

I think that helps for me too but I did grow up in a pretty liberal household too. But being on the spectrum definitely gives me more empathy (ironic huh) towards downtrodden groups than I would be if I weren’t.

re: #70 Belafon

These hate groups like the KKK are just much about fear as hate. They will do pretty horrible things when they think they have an advantage, but generally slink away when they don’t. So let them have their rally. But have a larger, peaceful group of people to hem them in. They will scream and shake their fists, but then back away in fear of an overwhelming counter rally.
So yes, the counter rally is the best solution. Expose their cowardice and empty hate speech for what it is. It won’t solve the problem, but it will reduce it somewhat.

As far as I can tell Juliana is actually Daniel St. Pierre of St. Petersburg Florida. Whois says he’s the registrant of her ebook web page. He runs a “Christian” wedding photography business and is associated with various other sites

Here’s a Ripoff Report on him.

Here’s the Youtube video that St. Pierre uploaded when the owner of the used car dealership refused to purchase his advertising services.

Mine aren’t. They didn’t like Bush but they believed the normal tripe about minorities, and still does. Occasionally, my dad and mom will get a glimmer of awareness, such as with a former friend who is half Hispanic insisting that the incident in Charleston was am attack on Christians. We ended up at the conclusion that she simply whitewashed herself, help by the fact her father is a thorough wack-job who somehow found a Hispanic wife.

But at times, they gave both threatened to cut me off when i was in college for bring hrahars critical of their views. My mom more so. Come to think of it, mom did that alot. Dad only a few times.
