The Burlington NC Neo-Nazi who inspired Dylann Roof

Culture • Views: 93,226

Anybody familiar with right wing extremism has likely heard of The Turner Diaries. Written by William Pierce, The Turner Diaries depicts a United States enveloped by racial civil war, bombings of federal buildings and the eventual global genocide of all non-white human beings. Pages of the book were found in Timothy McVeigh’s vehicle. However, as it was written in 1978, it may seem a little dated to aspiring young race war nuts.

Here to fill that void is Harold Covington (seen above with the blue, white and green flag of his imaginary white homeland set in present day Oregon, Washingon State, Idaho and Montana)

Born in Burlington, NC, Covington set about alienating his family and classmates with his racial views and invincible arrogance. A short stint in the US Army ended when he was discharged for mental illness in the early 1970’s after he was caught distributing Nazi propaganda to other soldiers. Covington made his way to Rhodesia (sound familiar?) where his noisome personality once again made him unwelcome. (One wonders just how big a racist asshole you would have to be to get kicked out by Ian Smith’s government.) Covington spent time networking with racists in South Africa before going to the UK to collaborate with the BNP and other far right British groups off and on in the late 70’s and 80’s.

Here in North Carolina, Covington was associated with the 1979 massacre of socialist activists in Greensboro. After managing to insult and pick fights with virtually every far right group in America (usually by accusing people of having Jewish ancestry, natch), Covington retreated to the Pacific Northwest (he has an outstanding warrant for his arrest here in NC for violating court orders pertaining to a libel case) where he began his dystopic Nazi porn epic series of books, including The Brigade, A Mighty Fortress, Sons of Freedom and other books with similar preposterous titles.

I have read excerpts from the online edition of The Brigade and found it is dripping with the blood of murdered lesbian women (killed by shotgun while in bed), African American athletes, Latinos, Jewish citizens and, of course, “race traitors”. I strongly suggest nobody else bother to look at it. If the word ‘evil’ has any meaning at all, these books exemplify the term. In them, a quasi-fictional group called the Northwest Front wages a guerilla war to create a white “homeland” in the Pacific Northwest. The books serve as a recruitment tool for what Covington hopes will be an actual race war with himself as the primogenitor of a new white paradise.

The British newspaper The Guardian recently interviewed Covington:

The racist manifesto and photos apparently posted by Roof makes mention of the Northwest Front, created by Covington, a former member of the American Nazi party who traveled to South Africa and Rhodesia in order to agitate for white power. In the accompanying photos, Roof wore patches with Rhodesian and apartheid-era South African flags on them.
Covington, if you believe his website, runs a growing enclave of white supremacists near Seattle called the Northwest Front. The non-profit group is reflected in a series of sci-fi novels, authored by Covington, about a dystopian future in which a white nation is the only answer to US economic and racial woes.

Covington denied specific knowledge of the attack in Charleston, although his denunciation only went so far as to declare the killings “counterproductive”

A few hours after the interview, his podcast had this to say:

“They’ve been given a vision of a time in some imagined but possibly not too-far distant future when all of a sudden, on the street or in their office, or in some trendy fern bar, or Starbucks, or wine-and-cheese boutique on the Upper East Side or in San Francisco, they will look up, possibly from the laptop, where they are typing up their day’s quota of leftwing, liberal horseshit, and they will see a young white man like Dylann Roof standing in front of them with no steroid-pumped policemen in blue to protect their liberal candy asses from the consequences of years of their own behavior…They will see in that young white man’s eyes, that he recognizes them. That he is now beyond deception or bullying or browbeating or Twitter-shaming or intimidation, that he knows them for what they are. And they will look down and see that he has something in his hand.”

Welcome to the face of white supremacy: porcine, greasy and cowardly.

All these self-proclaimed “master race” types are such twerps and doofuses. Not a single Dolph Lundgren type. (And note, Lundgren has an MS in chemical engineering and won a Fulbright scholarship to MIT.)

Oh, I figured that…but seriously, I do wonder how he conned some gal in Ireland to marry him…even if only for a couple of years. It seems he abandoned her with the kids on the Isle of Man around 1988 after cleaning out the bank account and running up the credit cards.

I gotta hit the sack, but I will leave this last tidbit from the SPLC interview with Ben Covington (Harold’s brother) that I linked above.

What’s your brother up to now?
His latest thing has been these Northwest trilogy novels. Those bother me because that’s The Turner Diaries all over again. [Editor’s note: The Turner Diaries is a racist novel, written by a neo-Nazi leader, that has been credited with inspiring violence including the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing.] When Harold was involved in the North Carolina Klan, it was some other poor, dumb bastard who was willing to go out there and do the dirty work. Because the bottom line here is that my brother is a coward. He has always been a coward and he will die a coward. The thing that bothers me about these Northwest trilogy books is that he is going to pick up some poor, deluded kid who is going to read these marvelous tomes about how white people can fight back, about how “we’re going to kill all the n******s and the Jews and the mestizos,” about how “we’re going to form this great Aryan republic in the Pacific Northwest,” Microsoft and Starbucks notwithstanding. And this poor dumb kid is going to go out and ruin somebody’s life. And that scares me to death.

It’s striking what poor specimens of Aryan supremacy these latter day wannabes really are. Compare this yokel to, say, the Butcher of Bohemia, Reinhard Heydrich. Now there was a scary ass looking Nazi, and he lived up to the image and then some. That didn’t keep Czech patriots from smoking his ass though.

From the last thread, something else that galls me is the lack of awareness. From work two examples.

First is an lady at work. Nice, but still on the enemy side. She does not have background the other friend did, so I won’t give her a chance. She hates the new Healthcare law, because she doesn’t want insurance, and doesn’t want the penalty either. She wants to move to Ireland, Switzerland, or to where her illegal immigrant husband is from, El Salvador. A country she fighting against him being deported to. Al because she alleges insurance is more expensive than the penalty, and she doesn’t need it because she is healthy.

First, lack of awareness that the European nations are more socialist than we are. Second, she also is casually racistn as I have heard her talking about African Americans and how they commit crime. Nevermind the situation you have in these communities. Along with the lack of logic that while you may not need insurance now, you will need it later.

From Saturday, the part about the attack that won’t get 1/1000 of the attention the shooter is getting (emphasis mine):

But there was lots of praise from tourists for employees of their respective hotels who may soon be out of work if Tunisia’s prime industry, tourism, is gutted by the attack.

Employees at nearby hotels or those with outlets on the beach joined in the rescue operation, running to the massacre site to lend a hand.

“You hear the gunfire. You can’t count the number of times,” said Haytham, a lifeguard at the nearby Royal Kenz Hotel. He and others cleared the beach and moved some wounded into ambulances. Visibly shaken, he and a group of tourists laid a bouquet at the doomed beach.

Faycal Mhoub, who from his post at the beach offers camel rides, rushed from his circuit when he heard the news, putting tourists in the family home, then went to help moved the wounded. […]

Actually it’s a very depressing story. Remember what the Germans did in return…

The British were so horrified by the results of the German retaliation that they swore off assassination.

He was evil enough that killing him probably still saved many lives in the end but it came at an enormous cost.

Maybe this will alert everyone to the MB in Libya. Their mis-management of areas they occupied, along with support for nutcases in Eastern Libya (Who, are now being pushed back) led to this mess.

Tripolitania needs to be invaded. Topple the MB government, and execute the traitors who conspired to have their little MB coup. Then, ISIS can be removed from Sirte.

This is pretty funny, Daniel St. Pierre and his wife Elizabeth return to their old church after a long absence and it was traumatic. Everything was going great, but there was one early sign of trouble with one of the female church leaders, “Unfortunately her black bra strap was showing.” It goes downhill from there.

Then they were able to pick up their own daughter from the Sunday School / daycare and the youth ministry leader wasn’t watching the front door because she was engaged with the children. Which enraged them because somebody could have just walked off with their daughter but that didn’t happen but GOSHDARNIT THAT’S NOT THE POINT IT COULD HAVE! The entire tone is cluck cluck cluckity cluck.

Also, I’m like 95% certain that the pic of “Juliana Carpentier” on that twitter .avi is really just his wife Elizabeth after a trip to the stylist.

What’s interesting about these two is that they can throw out such pious self righteousness while spamming the n-word so viciously on “Juliana’s” twitter account.

In this case, I’d argue it was a propaganda purpose. They are claiming, essentially, that pre-ISIL he was a normal &, indeed, westernized young man who would have easily fit into “civilization”. After his radicalization he was just a tool of the evil ones. Like most successful propaganda there is a tiny kernel of truth being exploited here but the reality of how and why he became radicalized is not touched upon because it doesn’t fit the spin so neatly.

I expect that this particular storyline will be picked up before long by Fox and the rest of the right wing media machine even though it originated from a wing of the Times; it fits their talking points too perfectly.

40 The War TARDIS  Jun 29, 2015 9:24:08pm

There is a second person at work who has proved my point too.

He tends to be the more normal average american guy. Thinks Call of Duty are the best video games, as they sell the most (Did not like it when I pointed out that Nickleback is the 2nd best selling Rock Group of all time).

He then, when I asked about Trump, said that he was right, and he shouldn’t be fired. Asked him about what, he said the immigrant thing. Pointed out that most immigrants behaved well. Then he shifted to how he never apologizes, and never backs down. Responded that admitting your mistakes that you made and apologizing far more brave than false bravado.

At which point he then deflected, saying Obama is a divider. Asked him how, pointing out what people said about him wanting to fail. Became vague at that point. At which point I said there are things the US has been running away from that need to be handled, now. And which point he then said he wasn’t serious about politics.

I notice a pattern that a number of White Millennials tend to be ignorant as to how things are different for other people, whether it be with disabilities, or those who are minorities. They tend to have a really white-washed view of things too, and don’t like when reality says hi.

I was wrong for getting into politics at work, so I will report myself.

I will say though, behavior like this, and from people on FB has caused two things. I Only identify as American and Muslim now. Not white. And two, the Tumblr people who constantly say “check your privilege?” I used to find them annoying. Now? I completely understand them. I was born white, which has given me certain advantages, and I am less likely to be judged negatively at first, and that my parents had more wealth, which gave me a huge advantage money-wise. The Autism, however, has shown me how people are quite literally willing to sweep you under a rug to keep up appearances (Hi Middle School), and identifying as Muslim has certainly given me an idea to how bigoted other people are.

I can see how that point would be constructed, though it falls apart under the weight of the facts. But as a FNC construct, it would used by those who don’t really care about the facts and by a network that doesn’t want to talk about how radicalization actually happens (because if it did, Fox News would have to answer for its own role in radicalization).

He didn’t destabilize Libya, but he destabilized the Mashriq region by toppling Saddam. Granted, Iraq was always going to collapse, but he did hasten it un-necessarily, but this was compounded by blunders such as an overly strict De-Baathification that left many Sunnis without jobs, and a continued support of al-Maliki, and his persecution of Sunnis.

This also distracted from Afghanistan, a war that could have been winnable. Afghanistan has existed as a distinct entity since before the Colonial era, unlike Pakistan or Iraq. Granted, Bush failed there too. He set up a by-the-book Unitary Republic, with relatively weak provinces. Considering the parallels historically between Switzerland and Afghanistan, it should have been set up as a Federal Directorial Republic, with multiple Presidents and strong provinces. That is the best way the multi-ethnic, multi-lingual nation of Afghanistan should work.

Bush pretty much destabilized the entire Muslim world. This might still come as a surprised to you, but you can’t just invade a sovereign nation on a pretext, directly and indirectly cause the deaths of hundreds of thousands of human beings without enraging their friends, family and fellow religious adherents spread across the globe. It’s grotesquely intellectually dishonest to simply point to countries in North Africa and assert that they’re geographically too far away for Bush’s totally inept prosecution of the Iraq war to have played any role in the terrorist insurgencies that plague them today. His pointless invasion is the direct inspiration for many of those groups, the reason they refuse to allow their countries to open up and re-allign with the Western democracies.

Just because something is popular, does not make it good.

We have different definitions of “slightly”, but no argument whatsoever on your point. Just find a factual way to make it.

meant alot to me as a whippersnapper. I’m so happy darthstar a real fan, was able to go to the concert last night. The show above started me on playing guitar. Sitting in drum circles carved into the asphalt, listening to the guitar players doing all my favorite songs with wooden instruments was truly inspiring. Then the show came!

William Leonard Pickard

It is not known where Pickard produced LSD for the very first time. His first arrest for manufacturing LSD came on December 28, 1988 in Mountain View, California. The laboratory was contained inside a trailer that had been moved into a warehouse. It contained state-of-the-art equipment, including a roto-evaporator, heating mantles and a pill press. He was producing kilogram quantities of LSD and putting them onto windowpane, microdot, and blotter forms. He spent time in prison for this and became a Buddhist while inside.

Yeah, this guy.

Talk about different worlds. Husker Du. The Who. The Clash. The occasional SRV. That was my world. Stuff that reached up and slapped your ass silly, not stuff that made you think you’d smoked a few too many blunts.

My ex dragged me to Phish at Alpine Valley once. Longest night of my life.

I can appreciate the Dead on a technical level - some of their shorter “pop” songs (Casey Jones, Touch of Grey, etc) are in my mp3 mix but I could have never gone to a show and made it through the endless noodling.

This here, was what my friends and I had in common.

Crossover thrash

Crossover thrash (often abbreviated to crossover) is a form of thrash metal and hardcore punk which had mixed both genres together or had influences from each other. The genre lies on a continuum between heavy metal and punk rock. Other genres on the same continuum have significant overlap with crossover thrash, and besides traditional hardcore punk and thrash metal, include related styles such as thrashcore, grindcore and skate punk.

Unlike most of the friends I grew up with, I liked travelling between tribes.

William Leonard Pickard

Yeah, this guy.

I’m 99.901% sure I have ingested Pickard acid, when I was in high school 30 miles away from a (D.TrumpVoice) Yoooge ski area, 17 or so years ago.

I’ve never ate better acid. It hasn’t been the same since. I’ve ingested acid about four times since 2005, the latest “trip” in Las Vegas the weekend of that damned Mayweather fight (I was there for The Umphreys).

Ain’t nothing like that Pickard shit I ate. He got pinched, he’s serving a life sentence. Since then, acid has always been *weak sauce*.

CAUTION: I’m a skiing enthusiast that has thrown “caution” to the wind more times that you can count stars. I don’t endorse drugs or drug taking, but I will tell you about times I took drugs and it fucking changed my life.

LSD. And morphine. I crashed a motorbike when I was 17 and smashed my face and nose something fierce (yes, I wasn’t wearing a helmet, this was 16 years ago). I underwent reconstructive plastic surgery to make my nose look more normal. It worked, thankfully. And post-op, I had morphine injected into my IV. I remember the pain going away immediately and I felt like I was in LaLa Land.

I was 17 the first time I took morphine.

I hear you on more levels than I care to remember sometimes. Black Bubblegum (hash laced with opium) was popular when I was stationed in Germany in 83/84. Helped pay the bills of the Afghan mujaheddin O_o

Acid waited till Kansas in 85. I took Jim Morrison’s path after that and stuck to alcohol mostly for the decades since. Bit of weed but not much as it just wasn’t worth the legal risks for me (especially when National Guard guys started getting pinched on federal charges & sitting for 10 at Club Fed for toking. )

I appreciate your honesty. I actively discourage opiates (and I know you do too) but I consider an adults decision to experiment with psychedelics acceptable.

In 2002 I dropped out of college and moved to Steamboat Springs with some skiing buddies (all of whom I still consider close friends, one of whom is a sponsored GoPro athlete). I was 20. I saw too much drug use for one person to witness in one summer’s time, and my education about all drugs, especially opiates, got more grim as the years ticked by. The man that hired me at my first job in Steamboat, he died of opiate overdose, his dogs bit his face off and chewed his fingers and toes off before the police arrived, about a week later.

I ate some mushrooms with a friend on a powder day. That was fun! That friend I speak of died last September of opiate overdose.

Yeah. You judged me correctly.

re: #97 William Lewis

Drinking runs deep in Wisconsin. I grew up in Milwaukee and there was a bar (or 4) on every corner. On the street I mainly lived, there was a bar in the middle of the block too. Up north, it’s 4 or 5 bars “downtown” in every hamlet. The number of bars in the city have dropped dramatically through permits over the years yet still celebrated among the city elites.
Why So Many Bars?
A new book captures the unique social history behind Wisconsin’s tavern culture

In their book, Draeger and Speltz were drawn to the theme of how breweries have thrived in Wisconsin and how they have directly influenced taverns. In the Milwaukee area, they chose to focus on Miller Brewing Co. and Pabst Brewing Co.

Draeger says that at one point, it was estimated that 85 percent of Milwaukee taverns were owned by breweries. Around 1880, the “tied-house phenomenon” began this trend of ownership. The nation’s mega-breweries were becoming fiercely competitive and it became difficult to stabilize the price of a barrel of beer. The breweries came to discover that instead of competing to sell their beer at a given tavern, they should buy and build their own taverns. Tied-houses were forced to pay their brewery’s prices and sell their brand exclusively. They were economically “tied” to the breweries. Schlitz alone owned 700 tied-houses. Many of these establishments were ornately and extravagantly designed “showcase taverns” made to establish prestige for their particular brand of beer. Breweries were so determined to eliminate competition, they were known to buy all four corner buildings on choice street intersections, according to Draeger.

Tied-houses became illegal per federal anti-trust laws after Prohibition. Ex-tied-houses are still found all over Milwaukee: Three Brothers at 2414 S Street Clair St. and Calderone Club at 842 N Old World 3rd St. are among them.

So UI is on hold until they give me an interview on the 10th. Last check looks like it’ll be a full one, I might have a half week one after that, but I have no idea if they’ll disable direct deposit or not. I’ll be 2 states away on Thursday so I can’t make it down there to pick one up if they do.

Apparently Nevada Law doesn’t require they pay out earned time off upon termination. I have 135 hours of paid time off (sick leave / vacation time combined) stored up because I never took time for myself, I might just be out the $1000 or so that should add up to.

I’m still in the post-termination daze, so it really hasn’t hit me yet. I can already tell I’m going to be a wreck come this time next week.

The fact that your employer didn’t just give you a check for the accrued time off and at least a couple weeks on top of that reflects very poorly on them. After your UI gets approved and you secure a new position I’d at least leave a scathing review of them on Glassdoor. That’s not right.

Charles mentioned this downstairs. CCJ appeared on public access TV in Fresno to talk about the Supreme Court decisions, the Confederate flag, Twitter and other random stuff.

Totally skippable, since he says nothing he hasn’t said before with @nero and @jason.

Aside from the book publisher shopping Charles mentioned already, here’s a few other tidbits.

Q: Without Twitter, how are you getting your message out?
A. With my website and other means.

Before a commercial break, the host tells people to go to GotNewsDotCom to see what’s happening around the nation.
HAHAHAHAHA!

There hasn’t been anything new there for more than three weeks.

Q: What idea are you pitching to potential investors?
A: To report news like a video game; if someone wants something researched or covered, they’d put out a request and a bounty; whoever gets the news first gets the bounty.

CCJ says he went to DC to pitch this concept to a billionaire. He didn’t mention getting pitched out of Grover Norquist’s little shindig.

He went on again about how DeRay is best buds with Twitter’s CEO and DeRay is censoring Chuck, argle bargle.

Yet another softball interview. Not sure if gotnwes.com will bother parodying this one.

So many Texas politicians are despairing about the Supreme Court decisions this week, a massive pity party might be in order. Ted Cruz was definitely crying in his beer. At least the poor fella found a sympathetic ear on Sean Hannity’s radio show.

“Today is some of the darkest 24 hours in our nation’s history,” Cruz said without any regard to subject verb agreement. “Yesterday and today were both naked and shameless judicial activism.”

Hannity concurred. “I couldn’t say it more eloquently.” (Unless, of course, he injected grammar into the statement.)

Yeah, it really compares with say 9/11, Antietam, Gettysburg, D-Day, Pearl Harbor, Anzio, OKC bombing, 1993 WTC bombing, War of 1812 (burning of DC), Valley Forge, etc.

You know, events where there were actual lives lost - murdered in the case of terror attacks, or conflicts/wars where the future of the US was in doubt, or our military campaigns overseas were in doubt, etc.

Gay marriage aint part of that same conversation. It’s not the same league, let alone the same universe.

When you’ve got nitwits who think that gay marriage is the worst thing since sliced bread, you know they’ve gone too far (except that the GOP sees this as a means to double down).

Watch the current thinking on gay marriage now go to the officials who have to enter the gay marriage records - whether to officiate civil weddings or file the paperwork. They’ve got GOPers suggesting (wink wink) that they should make a religious freedom argument that their religious views are trampled because the government allows gay marriage.

Let’s break that down for the GOP to understand. You want to talk about a slippery slope. If you let govt workers claim religious freedoms prevent them from acting (or taking certain actions that are in line with their religious beliefs) you will get some peculiar results.

A Jewish clerk at the DOH may prevent opening a seafood restaurant since it’s not kosher (ditto for barbeque and other joints with pork or non-kosher food).

A Muslim clerk may refuse to grant liquor licenses.

A Christian clerk may only grant a marriage license because it is one of the truly biblical marriages:

The amount of meddlesome and truly horrendous outcomes is mind blowing once you assert that religious rights of government workers can trump federal (or state) law.

It’s this same mindset that some Christians used to support and justify slavery, and then segregation, and later racial discrimination including anti-miscegenation laws.

Gohmert argued, “It is a tragic and ominous day for the United States when a decision by five unelected justices of the U.S. Supreme Court blatantly violates the law in order to destroy the foundational building block for society provided by Nature and Nature’s God — that was stated as divine law by Moses and Jesus.”

USA people (conservatives, because dems don’t work) pay money for others to better themselves ( at least she doesn’t bitch about freeloaders) but bettering themselves should include treatment for drugs and mental illness (because we all know anybody not working (a dem) is on drugs or mentally ill). Help people who want to work not people who just want to game the system because they’re freeloaders (oops I spoke too soon).

Neither, I think. There’s something about men acting like women (as she would put it, making no distinction between cosplay and transgender) that hits her where she lives. I don’t understand it….

Well, there’s that. I was surprised by one thing she once wrote: “but I have been hated on transgender sites for stating my honest (and perhaps uninformed) opinion from one woman’s perspective”. Question: if she doesn’t see eye to eye with the trans folk, how did she end up on those sites (only to end up being “hated”)?

That’s correct. And the Congressional compromise comes from the bigger states that wanted all representation based on the size of the states and the smaller states who wanted equal either way. Ben’s problem and this is one of my biggest historical pet peeves is when people talk about the Founders as if they were a monolithic group of people who all thought the same thing. Hamilton had much different views than Jefferson. John Adams thought differently than your average South Carolinan. Washington’s warning against political parties is famous but the political factions that were eventually created had been there already during the Continental Congresses.

I’m pretty sure a “fuck off” with half a dozen updings did not do it. The many more downdings on her hate speech did it.

Hey Sergey…saw your comment.

That may well be too. She did mention something about getting beat up by men. Obviously it enraged her, that is clear. Maybe past experiences in her life played into it.

I admit I did not see any of the previous discussions about transgender issues so I have no feel for how it all got to the point it did that day. I was just surprised it got so heated so fast.

I still think, and you can disagree, that age played into it too as far as the reactions that day. I don’t know her experience with internet flame wars and how many people have learned it is all a part of the internet ‘experience’ and sometimes you just have to let it roll.

If we were all sitting around in someones living room discussing it, it may not have gone the same way. The internet often provides no feeling. And if someone is in your living room, you probably already know them and their boundaries.

I still hope she is well and considers coming back. She did get the morning discussions rolling.

Again, she’s thinking of it as a masquerade, not what being transgendered really involves.

Calochortus, I also don’t get it, but from the other direction. I think if I woke up in a male body, I’d probably get used to it eventually. If I didn’t cut my throat shaving first, and I understand that electric razors are pretty wide-spread these days.

Compare the free regions of the Middle States, where a rich & noble cultivation marks the prosperity & happiness of the people, with the misery & poverty which overspread the barren wastes of Va. Maryd. & the other States having slaves. … Proceed southwardly, and every step you take, through the great regions of slaves, presents a desert increasing with the increasing proportion of these wretched beings.
Upon what principle is it that the slaves shall be computed in the representation? Are they men? Then make them citizens, and let them vote. Are they property? Why, then, is no other property included? The Houses in this city [Philadelphia] are worth more than all the wretched slaves which cover the rice swamps of South Carolina.
The admission of slaves into the Representation when fairly explained comes to this: that the inhabitant of Georgia and S. C. who goes to the Coast of Africa, and in defiance of the most sacred laws of humanity tears away his fellow creatures from their dearest connections & damns them to the most cruel bondages, shall have more votes in a Govt. instituted for protection of the rights of mankind, than the Citizen of Pa. or N. Jersey who views with a laudable horror, so nefarious a practice.

Getting beaten on by men… partly, maybe. But she seemed to be thinking along the lines of taking on a female appearance without paying the price (all the varieties of discrimination, wage differences and all that…).

If I suddenly found myself with a body part that changes size and shape depending on my mood, would I obsess over it? Or sometimes not even depending on my mood, it changes just because… would it define my existence?

re: #299 calochortus

I’m guessing JAH truly doesn’t understand being trans. I don’t. I can’t wrap my head around feeling like you need to be in a different body. Just. Can. Not.

However, I’m inclined to think when a noticeable number of people are willing to risk a wide range of consequences up to and including being killed for ‘coming out’ as who they feel they are, that it’s not just a fad. There must be something there. And, since it’s really none of my business what other people do with their lives and bodies, well, have at it.

To me understanding is a two-way street. You need to learn why someone wants a gender change and why others may be totally repulsed. The problems always start when the walls are built and the doors closed.

And there’s an ongoing SEC investigation into whether Christie diverted Port Authority funds to cover reconstructing the Pulaski Skyway and Witpenn Bridges that are outside the scope of the bonding that the Port Authority put out.

The bonding required that funds be used for approaches to the Lincoln tunnel, and it would take a stretched definition to find that either bridge is an approach to the Lincoln tunnel - which would indicate that the money was used inappropriately by the Port Authority at Christie’s insistence so as to avoid hiking gas taxes or raising other taxes to keep the transportation trust fund afloat.

Oh, but Christie could manage to swing a tax cut for the 1% (cutting out a proposed hike by the legislature that would have aided funding either pensions or the transportation funds).

My guess and this from an outsider looks in perspective (boring white straight male) is she doesn’t want people to forget that transpeople still do struggle and I think it’s a legitimate concern. Though I didn’t see previous discussions, one point I got from JAH, I think, is that a trans woman who has been treated as a male from birth with all of the privilege that accompanies that status, can never be female regardless of physical presentation because of the difference in socialization. There is a valid point of discussion there. At the same time, those of us who are not trans can never identify with that either, with the pain and confusion of feeling one way and being treated by society very differently. All we can do is support, or at least get the hell outa the way and stop judging what we don’t understand.

Well, not really — trans men and women are in that state, and once they acknowledge their situation, they cross over fairly easily (since that’s what they feel they are anyway). There are also cases of (usually) genetic men raised as women (because of genital malformation, usually) who never feel like women and, again, “revert” without difficulty. Humans is pretty flexible creatures, after all.

When my grandfather was a field examiner in the early days of the NLRB, when he went to the parts of Michigan away from the cities which I assume were much more unionized and friendly, he definitely got some harassment by employers who were none too happy to see that an agent of the ebil federal government was watching to see that employees were treated fairly. I even found an old article from the 60’s where he was quoted talking about how difficult unionization has been in the South. I have experience from the another end of labor too. My mom’s grandfathers fought hard to get their union rights (coal miners). I just always have to laugh when I hear about union thugs and union this from the right from people who have no idea that the very word union can get you fired some places. If unions are that bad, certain employers wouldn’t resort to that kind of crap. They see unions as an obvious threat to their power. Sorry ranting.

It seems to me that perhaps JAH could have phrased what she was arguing better. I mean yes a transman isn’t going to have all the experiences I will have had first as a boy and now as a man but it doesn’t make him any less of a man. That said there will be experiences that he will have that I will not. Some because he’s trans and some because everyone experiences life differently. I don’t know what happened with JAH. I do hope she’s alright.

Well, half of all (presumably heterosexual) couples get divorced now. For divorces to triple, that would have to go up to 150%. For that to be even mathematically possible, gay marriages would have to up the marriage total by 50% (instead of 2 or 3% at the outside), and everybody would have to get divorced. Math is hard!

There have been some problems between the B/T and the LG part…to a lot of trans people, they feel like they’ve been reliable soldiers for LGB rights, and often get their own needs mocked and ignored by the LG side.

PREFACE: LOTS OF LG PEOPLE ARE GOOD ALLIES, IF YOU ARE ONE OF THEM, I AM NOT TALKING ABOUT YOU
We have a Transgender day of remembrance to list off all the casualties of just being trans.
We show up for all the LG rights stuff.
We make progress on LG stuff (and to a very large extent, SSM is a nice step forward, but it mainly affects people whose lives are stable enough to make marriage a reasonable thing to do)
We want to make progress on employment/housing discrimination for trans people…and a lot of the LG people are often nowhere to be found…thanks guys.

But next year there’ll be another day of remembrance…and we’ll probably show up for all the LG rights stuff and then we’ll look for help on trans issues again, and they won’t be there again.

There’s a similar split between a lot of the LG community and some B community, though its not as broad or deep of a problem…basically some people think bisexuals are just…indecisive or something and don’t want to declare a preference.

Basically…its complicated.

So far, police departments generally have not risen to the challenge. Although new recruits typically spend nearly 60 hours learning to handle a gun, according to a recent survey by the Police Executive Research Forum, they receive only eight hours of training to de-escalate tense situations and eight hours learning strategies for handling the mentally ill.

Well, if it’s 1/3 like they used to say, and gay marriages increased the total by 50%, and everybody got divorced (because SSM destroyed marriage), that would work out.

The battle flag was found Sunday night attached to the memorial for Colonel Robert Gould Shaw and the Massachusetts 54th Regiment — the first black troops organized in the North during the Civil War — with the flag having been placed over the sword on the figure of the white commanding officer Shaw.

Actually this does not sound like a vandalism but an appropriate place for the CSA flag—on the tip of a Yankee sword.

Just read your comment. Very well stated. If I remember, was not part of the whole dust-up caused by Bruce Jenner becoming Caitlyn Jenner? I would think in that case what you are saying really strikes home.

How many people going through that kind of change have the big media presence, the money and the world watching it all happen. So, maybe the Jenner case can become the big tipping point that changes a lot of perceptions for everyone.

We had a time where there weren’t many publically funded roads in this country. And it was a time when Poopyface died of Cholera often on the Oregon Trail. Publically funded roads though go back as far the Romans maybe even further.

“Robber Barons” did not build roads, they just blocked already-built roads and demanded tribute for right of way. That’s why they’re called “Robber Barons” and not “Road Building Barons”

Even the Mighty Railroads were built using government land grants and government protection through Native American lands. Oh, and cheap outsourced labor.

Quote is from Ben’s own article: breitbart.com

ISrael’s also been accepting gays openly in the military since Ben was a pimple faced youth. Seems to me all of our key allies: Britain, Canada, Israel are on board with LGBT rights while those we don’t like Russia, North Korea, Iran, China have more of a problem with them. Hmmmm Ben, may want to look at that.

Jeez, these people!
Here’s a Fairly Comprehensive List of Anti-Vaccination Celebrities
Charlie Sheen?! Really?! Like I’d take advice from Mr. Winning!

Jenna Elfman, Danny Masterson, and Juliette Lewis? Now that’s disappointing. No Mayim Bialik? I keep hoping Melissa McCarthy isn’t an antivaxxer like her cousin Jenny—seen nothing either way yet.

And remember, Ben sez real Jews oppose gay rights.

THIS IS THE STUPIDEST MEME OF THE DAY==>
Libertarians just can’t figure out how that “roads” thing works.

[Embedded content]

The last part is actually fairly accurate. Leaving aside the need for standardization in roads, such as lane width requirements, reflective striping, etc., how does the libertarian propose that groups of taxpayers get together, determine what road is needed and where, provide specs for the project, ensure compatibility with other nearby groups of tax payers, contact the construction company etc.? Who gets nominated as the point person to do all of that?

Good lord, it’s absolutely no different than hiring a general contractor that subs out every aspect of the work.

Ahh. I have to admit, my comedy tastes were from 70s-80s. I just watched Super Troopers the other day for the first time. :)

I do love Mel don’t get me wrong but I cannot watch D&D and not have nostalgic memories of being a kid. My best friend, one brother, his brother, and me even did some shorts that my Dad recorded on the camcorder called “Absolute Morons” that was definitely inspired by Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels’ idiocy in that movie. We also play Orbison’s “Pretty Woman” which I first heard in that movie when we go over the Bay Bridge to go to the beach. My favorite Mel movie though is The Producers. I love anything that gets a good gag in at Hitler’s expense. A modern comedy I like though is In Bruges though. Planning to go there in a couple summers in part because of the movie.

True, Ben has appointed himself Real Jew tm. Now what’s funny is antisemites love to point out Jewish involvement in liberal causes and use it to justify their antisemitism. And whether Ben wants to admit or not, these are his allies.

Who will maintain the roads? That is the actual question. There is no libertarian incentive (and that is not really that high, either) to do anything other than half-ass lay pavement.

re: #412 ObserverArt

Just read your comment. Very well stated. If I remember, was not part of the whole dust-up caused by Bruce Jenner becoming Caitlyn Jenner? I would think in that case what you are saying really strikes home.

How many people going through that kind of change have the big media presence, the money and the world watching it all happen. So, maybe the Jenner case can become the big tipping point that changes a lot of perceptions for everyone.

One thing I will say about justanotherhuman, she was sharp as a tack. You may have just pointed out something that flew over some heads.

Okay…later!

re: #423 klys (maker of Silmarils)

Agreed. Which is why when she said it was child abuse for parents to support their children if they expressed as trans, it set off a lot of backlash.

Just to provide the point that really touched a nerve for a lot of people.

I like JAH, but if that’s what they think of trans folks (especially male>female trans folks, such as fellow Lizard AED), then that’s a problem they have to deal with and no one else. By the comments from most about her, I don’t see any real animus against her personally; however, if JAH decided to pack it in from LGF for good over this, it’s all on them.

Please do. And if you like it, Seven Psychopaths and The Guard. I love the McDonagh brothers sense of humor. Martin directed In Bruges and Seven Psychopaths while John directed The Guard. It’s not just my strong liking of Celtic culture, those guys make some darkly funny movies. I still need to see Cavalry though.

If I’m ever in Arizona again (it is AZ, right?) I’ll look you up. One of these days I plan to travel by CAR to all these places I’ve visited via airplane. :)

NM. Keep going east, right?

Aunty Entity Dragon,

My God, we’re dealing with truly sick people. We should be thankful that William Pierce and Harold Covington don’t have the ability to carry out their depraved fantasies to turn the world into an all white “Utopia.” Dylann Roof sure tried through when he murdered those poor people in that church. Hopefully his punishment will make other racist sickos like him think twice about trying to bring about the “race war” which thankfully will never happen.
