Glenn Beck: Conservatives Should Boycott Disney Because They’re Making a Film About Charles Darwin

See, this is why America is a laughingstock to much of the world: the casual anti-science ignorance of right wing clowns like Glenn Beck.

In this clip from Right Wing Watch, Beck rants about Disney lighting up the Magic Castle at their theme park in rainbow colors, then suggests conservatives need to boycott Disney because they’re making a movie about (gasp!) Charles Darwin!

Notice, Beck doesn’t even have to explain why a film about Darwin is supposed to be a bad thing. It’s just assumed that his audience understands the theory of evolution is evil and Darwin is a villain, and therefore Disney must hate Christian families to even think about doing such an outrageous thing.

“Boycotts work and we have created a vacuum. We do nothing,” Beck said. “Let me give you this story, they’re doing a new movie, kind of an Indiana Jones swashbuckling spirit of a five year voyage in 1831 on ship H.M.S. Beagle to the coastline of South America to find and follow the man who made discoveries that made him one of the most influential figures in human history.”

“Wow, this sounds like a swashbuckling thriller that we are going to have to take our families to see,” Beck said sarcastically. “Doesn’t it sound great? It’s Charles Darwin. It’s the story of Charles Darwin and so we’re going to find out how exactly he came up with the idea, made the discoveries that brought him to the theory of evolution. Thank you, Disney! That’s fantastic.”

Didn’t we go through this a couple of years ago?

First there was the boycotting of Disneyland because of teh ghey.

Then there was that animated movie about Darwin’s voyage which was retitled for American audiences to take out the clear reference to Darwin.

Future historians will name this the Golden Age of Assholes. Not since the Inquisition has it been possible to make such a handsome living by being an asshole. It is sad, though, that the present demand for assholes has caused quality control to go all to hell.

It’s an unfortunate byproduct of the digital age. In the past, Glenn would just be the town drunk shouting this crazy stuff and most of us would ignore him but today craziness pays handsomely. Just can’t stop laughing about this. He wants to boycott Disney over a Charles Darwin bio-epic.

Give credit to the English, they were fearless explorers. I’ve always been fascinated by the history of Arctic/Antarctic exploration, but there are so many other worthy stories out there to be told. Lewis and Clark would be amazing, I agree.

lewis and clark is a fascinating story about what you’d expect on the outbound phase but then they ran out of tobacco and the return trip was a degrading clusterfuck as they all lost their tempers and yelled at each other because of tobacco withdrawal

When I was a kid, I had this book and man I really really wish I still had it but it was a book on the explorers. I think it started with Marco Polo or maybe even before but it ended with Jacques Cousteau and the people who started exploring the bottoms of the oceans in the 60’s. Human exploration is just a fascinating tale. As I said, I got at before, i think Columbus committed genocide but the age of Exploration that he jump started is just an amazing story.

If I recall correctly, Darwin was invited to go along to keep Captain FitzRoy company since the captain couldn’t socialize with anyone of lower rank. In other words, anyone else on the ship who was in the Navy. Hence the need for a civilian aboard.

American Taliban is a very accurate description of an important faction of the US Right. The only reason they aren’t out there preaching the desirability of stoning gay people and burning witches (i.e. women who have an abortion) at the stake is because those are losing political messages in contemporary US culture.

American Taliban is a very accurate description of an important faction of the US Right. The only reason they aren’t out there preaching the desirability of stoning gay people and burning witches (i.e. women who have an abortion) at the stake is because those are losing political messages in contemporary US culture.

That’s why it was in the past tense. I mean it’s not merely that they oppose SSM. It’s that they refuse to acknowledge LGBT citizens as human beings deserving any sort of rights under the law.

I still think Glenn Beck is all show. Read his background. It is all crazy. He really is a very base human. The guy is still just a shock jock that found out being a complete ass sells to the huge population of complete asses in this country.

Once he started to make money being a loon he decided to go full loon and it paid even more. There will be no stopping it until it doesn’t pay. That is not going to happen and so he will go through life being a well paid ass.

It is his right. What really disturbs me is that so many buy into the show. It is a true indicator of how crazy so many people really are and want to believe the worst in everything.

I still think there are times when all alone he reflects on how this has turned out and then says to himself…I can’t believe they buy it. He knows it is all BS. But he also knows he can’t let on or let up.

Of course, he doesn’t actually have a leg to stand on, as he should know from operating his own reality show. Dusted off the old mountain bike today - haven’t ridden it in 8 or 10 years. Chain’s a bit rusty, but good. Disc brakes still work. Put the old trail tires on it (had road tires from when I used it to commute to work) and bought a new tube for the back tire - should have put a new tube up front. Got about four miles into my ride before the front went flat - fortunately I was doing a bit of a back and forth loop, so it was just a two mile walk home. Still, it was a lovely day for a ride and I forgot how good it feels to ride a bike on a trail…even one with a decent view like this.

re: #184 Blind Frog Belly White

I think for the fans, awesomeness is inversely proportional to score.

I happen to love defense. You can keep your sluggers, I’ll watch a pitcher’s duel anytime. As far as I’m concerned defense wins championships, and I don’t care what the sport is. As a result of the way I see sports, I see soccer as a game of mistakes. It isn’t surprising to me that there is so little scoring in soccer. What surprises me is that there is ANY scoring in soccer. Whenever I see a goal scored, all I see are the defensive breakdowns that let the goal in. Granted, the scoring player may perform a remarkable athletic feat, but the fact is with all those defenders in the neighborhood there is now way that offensive player should put foot or skull on that ball with enough force to execute a good shot.
As I see it, the defense either breaks down (I think it’s 2/2 boredom) or just doesn’t know what they’re doing.

If I recall correctly, Darwin was invited to go along to keep Captain FitzRoy company since the captain couldn’t socialize with anyone of lower rank. In other words, anyone else on the ship who was in the Navy. Hence the need for a civilian aboard.
Yay for strict social constraints. //

Yes, Fitzroy was replacing a captain who had committed suicide.

A FIVE TERABYTE drive with USB 3 case for only $129. Amazing price, 48% off. Couldn’t believe it when I saw it. I also got the 2-year data protection plan for $9.99 — if the drive goes bad they recover all the data and give it back to you on a new disk. If they can’t recover you get a full refund. Great deal.

Greece is the new Detroit

[Embedded content]

Paul Krugman has a very different view than most I’ve been hearing.

Greece should vote “no,” and the Greek government should be ready, if necessary, to leave the euro.

To understand why I say this, you need to realize that most — not all, but most — of what you’ve heard about Greek profligacy and irresponsibility is false. Yes, the Greek government was spending beyond its means in the late 2000s. But since then it has repeatedly slashed spending and raised taxes. Government employment has fallen more than 25 percent, and pensions (which were indeed much too generous) have been cut sharply. If you add up all the austerity measures, they have been more than enough to eliminate the original deficit and turn it into a large surplus.

So why didn’t this happen? Because the Greek economy collapsed, largely as a result of those very austerity measures, dragging revenues down with it.

I see lots of soccer because some of the places I go have some sort of soccer channel on their tv (showing games from all over the world). I see the offense probe the defense all the time looking for an opportunity. Usually the defense easily turns to offense away. My point is that when a goal is scored, it’s because someone in the defense didn’t do her/his job. The only exceptions to that principle are corner kicks.

The only criticism I have about hockey is that it is over the long term been the worst officiated sport, but that’s a legacy of the league tolerating fighting. Sure, it’s called the “recent comments” button on your profile.

As I recall, there was a nice spate at the end of January that pretty much marked the last time I talked about hockey extensively here, where you went off about fighting in the league and how shitty the state of goaltending was. Kind of like you just did here. It didn’t leave me with the impression that you liked hockey at all.

I think what sports you like depend on how you’re raised I guess. I don’t recall how I got into baseball but I played t-ball from the time I was six until I was in 8th grade and probably would have tried out for high school if I didn’t have a heart condition and could actually hit. Played some great basketball games on the playground in 5th and 6th grade and I’ve been assistant coach for my brother’s team the past three years. Watched a ton of boxing and football with my Grandpa so I like those too. No one I was close to was a big hockey or soccer fan so I never really became a fan of either. I did sort of do a hockey camp one winter but I do not like ice skating since it gives me terrible foot blisters.

Standup goalie. Interesting. They did fuck up the pads a few years back and tried to tie down the wanderers (like Belfour, Cujo, Roy, etc.) I think the leg pads were reduced from 12 to 11 inches.

Growing up in the Basketball State (Indiana), basketball was what every kid was “expected” to play. Despite my well-above-average height, I was never all that good on the court. I also played T-ball when I was a kid. Being in the conservative bubble kind of insulated me from more “world-centric” games like soccer, and being in the northernmost reaches of the South meant that hockey was right out.

I am supposed to know something about college basketball because of in-laws.

Hockey is the sport I have gotten into on my own, thanks to going to games in person (the only way to do it) and at this point I’ve found an enthusiastic community elsewhere that is able to acknowledge places where the sport could be improved without coming across as hating it in its entirety. Wow. Here’s an incredible deal I just picked up at Amazon to replace a failed 2TB external hard drive — Seagate Expansion 5TB Desktop External Hard Drive USB 3.0.

Great deal.

I’m still in shock that a 5TB drive can be this cheap. Somebody pinch me.

Tempting, but I will pass. I have a 1TB drive, broken down into 4 250 GB partitions. So far they have served me well.

It really is. I mean other sports have the similiar problems with health issues. Mean Joe Greene is the only member of the Steel Curtain still with us.

I think it’s the combination of brain trauma and steroids, but jeeezus fuck is there a lot of damage in that sport.

I know. It’s fucked up. Combine that with drug abuse used to recover from the injuries and you got a lot of guys who sadly don’t touch 50. Now baseball players seem to live pretty healthy lives. My dad met Ted Williams when Ted was well into his 80’s.

Sorry but literally every single device of theirs I ever had died on me 1000% well within the boundaries of the warranty - which always proved to be 2000% worthless…

I used them back when I was building my own machines, never had a problem. Then again, I haven’t built a machine in 10 years.

363 EPR-radar  Jun 30, 2015 6:07:29pm

Having always rightfully been picked dead last for any sports team ever, I naturally learned to despise them all, both as participant and spectator.

However, my views have moderated over time, and I can appreciate positive sports stories when they come by (e.g., the grit of Alexandra Popp).

It does stink seeing familiar faces go. One of the first people I met here was SFZ and FBV. FBV was pretty conservative by the standards especially of where we are now but he was a nice guy to me. There are others whose departures I don’t really mourn though which is more personality related than ideological.

I think what sports you like depend on how you’re raised I guess

Not sure it’s the only factor IMHO.
I grew up liking basketball and hockey, and loved baseball more than anything else back in California (Angels fan - and that’s ANAHEIM Angels, LA can kiss my O.C. butt). Always had a soft spot in my heart for World Football (will not call it soccer, sorry) because of my parents, both of whom have some South American heritage and some family in the southern continent, where the sport is revered. Also, one of my grandfathers coached a prominent youth team back in the day, so always knew how it was played and followed the World Cup even if no one else I knew outside of my family did.

After the move to the Middle East, the whole sports dynamic really ended up being reversed; While basketball is popular and the local teams, players and coaches are strong enough to make a name beyond the country’s borders, hockey and baseball were and are virtually nonexistent. In contrast, with regards to World Football - which is viewed by most of the whole country, men and women nearly alike, as all but given by God to Moses at Mount Sinai - I ended playing in high school at a competitive level and since then have consumed more matches (local and international) than i could count at this point. Don’t follow the local league as much as I used to (all the teams have deteriorated badly in recent years IMO), but sure do follow all the other ones.

At the end of the day, I’m still a fan of all of them, with football perhaps my favorite nowadays.

He also is someone I can really see the decency in. There have been other conservatives I’ve known over the years who just have their political persona but with DF I can see someone who is very knowledgeable about history and another credit in his favor that I have to give him credit for is he is willing to learn.
