Fox News Go-To Baptist Preacher Says SCOTUS Marriage Equality Decision Is a Sign of the End Times

Robert Jeffress is a frequent guest on Fox News, where they present him as a kindly avuncular Baptist pastor.

But in reality, he’s a totally insane religious fanatic preaching conspiratorial End Times hatred.

Jeffress had some good news, though: The Supreme Court’s decision and the ensuing rainbow-flag projection on the White House all just confirm the Bible’s reports of what will happen before the return of Christ.

“What happened Friday was nothing short of an affront in the face of Almighty God,” Jeffres said in his introduction of Perkins. “And how did our president respond? President Obama responded Friday night by bathing the White House, the people’s house, in colors that represent what the Bible calls degredation, depravity and sexual perversion.”

Jeffress and his church, he said, are “not going to be silenced by the liberal left, Barack Obama or the United States Supreme Court.”

“We’re not despondent, we’re not discouraged in the least,” he added, “because everything that happened Friday is simply confirmation of what the Bible says is going to happen before the return of Jesus Christ.”

Right Wing Watch’s posts since the Supreme Court decision on same sex marriage are a picture of the religious right getting increasingly insane. The incitement is reaching dangerous levels.

EVERYTHING is a “sign of the end times” to these people. No, literally - they are fully convinced that the world will end in their time, and every little sign and wonder they can find to “prove” it just sends them deeper into apocalyptic hysteria. I don’t miss it at all.

So this Jeffress creep thinks the marriage case was the worst blunder by the US supreme court in its entire history.

Even if one were to charitably assume this human dumpster fire weren’t 100% wrong on the marriage issue, there is still the question of what about the Dred Scott case?

How fucked up in the head must one be to claim that a SCOTUS decision granting marriage equality is somehow worse than the Dred Scott case?

This raving lunacy is typical of the US religious right.

I’m an episcopalian, so I take the position that the rapture already happened and that we’re what’s left. After all, if God can flood the world, destroying the Egyptians in the process, and then put the Egyptians right back where they were, with no remembrance of perishing, presumably the Rapture would work the same way.

I logged into FB, hoping to see new pix of the grandkids, and I get this message:

We care about you and the memories you share here. You posted this photo exactly 5 years ago. We thought you’d like to look back on it today.

OK it was a pie, because that’s mostly all I post to FB, pies and other baked goods, but what if somebody else got a little drunk and posted something they shouldn’t have, and then forgot about it and Facebook shows it to them 5 years later?

Had a fun day at work today. All the first-aid type certifications I’ve been studying for we did as an 8 hour class. I am now Basic Life Support: CPR and First Aid Certified (2 of those now), Emergency Oxygen Provider for Diving Injuries, Neurological Assessment, and First Aid for Hazardous Marine Animal Injuries.

These courses were offered by DAN (Divers Alert Network). They are affiliated with Duke University’s School of Hyperbaric Medicine, and are generally considered the “Gold Source” for Dive Medicine related stuff. The training sessions were good, better than the typical First Aid classes, and stuff like doing basic neurological assessments folks like Red Cross and EFR don’t even touch, based on the idea that EMTs / Paramedics will be there in 15 minutes or less.

Also had to tell a person who got some scuba gear at a flea market (Yea, that’s where I go for life sustaining equipment) that the reg they spend 100 bucks for is going to need 150 dollars of work to get it to the shape where it’s worth 80 bucks. (and that’s making a pretty shaky assumption that it could be rebuilt, it was really rough)

Having a nice grilled Ham and Swill on Rye, with some potato salad. A big kosher dill spear is proudly standing in for vegetables.

“The guidelines for the rule-crazy event disallowed for any candid photography of the author, and people clamoring for an autograph had to buy her book (30% off!) from the Barnes & Noble…”

“…I walked out of the bookstore with ¡Adios, America! still in hand. Roughly 30 protesters started chanting me down saying “Shame on you! Shame on you!” I gave them the book to use in the protest instead. “Do whatever you want with it!” I told them. I always found it amusing that the best place to be one year is no where to be found the next. How the hell does that happen? Another paradox was, “Man this place is beautiful. I like everything about it. Can I find a job that won’t involve a 4 hour commute? No? Oh…”

It must piss the hell out of christianists to grow old and die before the rapture comes. They didn’t get a chance to see the big event that justified their life of judgemental superiority. Sucks to be them…

Not to worry. They’ll get the appropriate reward when they shuffle off this mortal coil.

It will be a most unpleasant surprise.

Small town life has a certain appeal to it, if you base your decision on romantic notions culled from books and movies. Winesburg, Ohio, by Sherwood Anderson, comes closer to reality in terms of local behavior.

If I had a decent paying job in a small town, and enough free time to escape to a bigger city once in a while, I could tolerate it, especially now that I’m older. As a young man, though, it would have driven me bonkers.

My 86 year old Aunt has her “Watergate Quilt” she knitted while watching every single testimony.

I, as her only major Democratic heir, expect that as my legacy.

Hell, we were vacationing together in San Francisco when Vanity Fair published the name of Deep Throat. She was ecstatic.

That was a very good and concise look at the whole story, largely told through those period news clips. Seems like Dean, Chapin, Buchanan and Liddy are the only living Watergate figures…and Rather, Stahl and Walters are the only living journalists seen during that hour.

Indeed. Ripping up a book can be ominous, but if the book was already paid for it is not violent, since one is allowed to destroy one’s own property (in general, of course exceptions apply).

Triple digits? Try 80 people. Four blocks either way. Three families. Half the buildings are a century old and aren’t used.

On the way to my brother’s wedding, in Northern Minnesota, in a town with 119 people, we passed through Funkley, MN. Population 19.

ETA: That was in 1973. It’s now down to 5.

123 Eclectic Cyborg  Jul 2, 2015 8:20:43pm

I had a rather disconcerting dream last night:

I was swinging something around as I was walking down an urban street (a stick or some other solid object). I have no idea why I was swinging it but I accidentally hit a man who was walking a few feet ahead of me.

The guy freaked out, threw me to the sidewalk, beat me up for a few minutes and then pinned me to the ground in a headlock. He then drew a pistol and shot me in the head…twice.

I can’t even describe what I felt after I got shot except to say it was some sort of bizarre dream world paralysis. I literally could not move, could not speak. I didn’t know if I was dead or alive.

I finally snapped awake and had a minor panic attack. It took me a few moments to get my bearings and realize that:

a) I HAD been dreaming
b) I was actually in my bedroom
c) My head was perfectly intact

I’ve had bad/unusual dreams before, even a couple in which I’ve been shot, but never shot in the head and never one that I’d reacted to like this one.

I literally stayed wide awake for an hour watching youtube videos on my phone at 4 a.m. because I was scared to go back to sleep.

It sounds so stupid and irrational but I’ve never been so jarred by a dream before. Hopefully I find a more peaceful sleep tonight.

Every now and again (probably four or five times a year) I have horrible dreams where I’m falling off a really high place (a skyscraper, the Grand Canyon, etc.), and when I impact, I get jolted awake immediately and I’m covered in sweat.

I wish you a better nights sleep, what you described sounds fucking terrifying.

126 stpaulbear  Jul 2, 2015 8:40:36pm

I’m feeling kind of embarassed this evening. Earlier today I blew up on another blog at a guy who’s trying to be one of the guys when his parents are living ‘frugally’ on a 6-figure investment return and he’s in line to inherit over $10 million. He wasn’t bragging about the money, but he was kind of bragging about how much he wasn’t like Trump. There wound up being a LOT of comments on that thread.

I had promised myself that if I could keep one good habit through June that I was going to treat myself to a MN-made birthday/early retirement gift (even though I don’t get to retire for another 3.5 years - less than 1000 work days!). I wasn’t perfect at keeping the habit but I still made my goal, so here’s to me. Whoopie!!

I bought the waxed canvas version. Big indulgence…

127 stpaulbear  Jul 2, 2015 8:45:14pm

…and of course the thread is dead now.

I have a recurring (as in 10 prob) dream where I’m flying over the cliff while in a car - I’m never the driver - like SOAR of beauty knowing death is coming.

I looked it up, and blah. Everyone has this?

Like Thelma and Louise? No, I don’t have that one.

My flying dreams are sort of… my body position and movements are like swimming, but apparently the air is thick enough to support me and let me move forward. The ground below me is a large map, I navigate by recognizing state lines, highways, rivers, it’s not always to the same scale.

re: #123 Eclectic Cyborg

I had a dream last winter where my car went out of control and plunged into a lake. I was just sitting in the car wondering if someone was going to rescue me, wondering if I wanted to escape, and wondering why I wasn’t drowning. I finally decided to take a big deep breath in and get it over with. When I still didn’t drown I realized I was dreaming and I was PISSED. I woke up and I was like you where the disorientation was total. I didn’t know where I was and I was in a panic. I didn’t get up because I still wanted to fall back to sleep, but I was staring at the ceiling for a long time. It was pretty awful.

It is the end of time, for looney-tunes like Robert Jeffress. Marriage Equality is a civil marriage and as some churches like the U.S. Presbyterian and the Episcopal churches are performing same-gender marriages, it is also a religious marriage, and a traditional marriage as is now defined in the dictionary -
1. (law) the state of being a married couple voluntarily joined for life (or until divorce) - “a long and happy marriage”
2. Two people who are married to each other - “his second marriage was happier than the first”
3. The act of marrying; the nuptial ceremony - “their marriage was conducted in the chapel”
4. A close and intimate union - “the marriage of music and dance”; “a marriage of ideas”
