Good afternoon Lizards from overcast Boston.

Last day in New England before heading back to Philadelphia. Drinking a beer or two, being patriotic, and might be able to stay late enough to see the fireworks. Taking train back out of the city will be the main limitation.

Sigh…

Flag stirs strong feelings

[…]

David Murdoch, chairman of the Johnson County Heritage Foundation, said the [CSA battle] flag, good, bad or indifferent, remains a part of our history.

“It’s a difficult subject I know,” Murdoch said. “But I think it’s wrong to try to take down, ban or try to erase it. If you get into that you also get into things like changing the names of our sports teams and things like that and basically trying to deny that history ever happened, and I think that’s totally wrong.

Some people say racism but God created all of creation and was well pleased with it, and that includes all the races. Every race has a history of having been persecuted by another more powerful group. But the dignity of each individual has to come from within himself. It cannot be given to him by others.”

[…]

“What’s going on in this country is not about the Confederate flag,” Murdoch said. “It’s about government control and taking our freedoms and liberties away. [Vladimer Lenin] said that you probe with steel and when you encounter mush you continue to probe. That’s what we have now, the radical people in our government probing with steel and encountering mush. Until we stand up they’re going to continue doing just that.”

[…]

21 freetoken  Jul 4, 2015 12:38:14pm

…. sigh….

Terry’s Texas Rangers Camp 1937, a local historical and Civil War re-enactment group, often flies the Confederate and other Civil War era flags during their appearances. Members of the local chapter referred questions on the flag to Marshall Davis, public information officer for Texas Division, Sons of Confederate Veterans.

Davis called the flag a source of pride, not racism.

“That is a symbol of honor and service and pride for the men who carried that flag into battle and fought nobly and bravely to defend their country from an invading army,” Davis said.

On the heels of several major corporations distancing themselves from Donald Trump’s various business interests, the Republican presidential candidate admitted Saturday that he didn’t think the corporate backlash to his inflammatory comments about Mexican immigrants would be “quite this severe.”

“I knew it was going to be bad because I was told this. All my life I have been told this: If you are successful, you don’t run for office,” Trump said in an interview on Fox News, addressing the recent spate of businesses that have severed their relationships with his brand. “I didn’t know it was going to be quite this severe, but I really knew it was going to be bad.”

GOP lawmakers, Scott Walker abandon open records changes

Faced with a swift and fierce backlash, Republicans Saturday abandoned a plan that would have gutted the state’s open records law.

In a joint statement issued Saturday afternoon, Gov. Scott Walker and GOP legislative leaders said the provisions relating to any changes to the would be removed from the state budget.

“After substantive discussion over the last day, we have agreed that the provisions relating to any changes in the state’s open records law will be removed from the budget in its entirety. We are steadfastly committed to open and accountable government,” the statement read. “The intended policy goal of these changes was to provide a reasonable solution to protect constituents’ privacy and to encourage a deliberative process between elected officials and their staff in developing policy. It was never intended to inhibit transparent government in any way.”

Police Arrest Wisconsin Man Who Allegedly Threatened to Kill Obama - Breitbart

59 CuriousLurker  Jul 4, 2015 3:10:02pm

Continuing the vein of Mesoamerica and the discussion of marriage in the previous thead:

Women in Aztec civilization > Spanish rule

The Spanish conquest of Aztec territories decimated much of the indigenous population, through warfare and by bringing new diseases, such as smallpox, for which the Aztecs had no immunities. The population that did survive these threats was confronted by other profound attacks upon their culture in the form of Spanish institutions such as the Roman Catholic religion.

As early as 1529, the Spanish began coercively converting Aztecs to the Catholic religion. They focused on the Aztec nobility initially, to create an example for the other Aztecs to follow. Nobles such as Quetzalmacatzin, King of Amaquemecan (Chalco), were forced to choose one wife and abandon the others, to comply with the Christian institution of marriage, which meant monogamy. Aztec polygamous arrangements, with secondary wives and children, were not legally recognized by the Spanish, who considered such women and children illegitimate and disinherited from claims to ranks or property. This also tore apart the political and economic fabric of Aztec culture, since noble marriages were made with political and territorial claims in mind. […]

The new Spanish culture prohibited women working outside of their home as their priority was to raise children. Their independence as workers with paid occupations was ended by the Spanish, particularly in textile work. When the Spanish eventually set up industrial textile mills, they had men working in the mills, not women. […]

Yay, three cheers for European Christian culture & its superior civilization! //

And with that I’m outta here—later, lizards.

Maybe take a ride over to a park with a show?

He is supposed to be an adult. He has to set a good example for the younger set. Someone should exploit that for … never mind.

Maybe in the future. For now I am getting some practice with nice camera. :)

Well, I think anyone who decides to ride a motorcycle across a field is a douche to begin to with.

If only there had been more rain wherever they took that picture…

Fun fact about Red Rocks Amphitheater in Morrison, CO - which our humble host has had the pleasure of playing guitar in front of a live paying audience on its stage: From the stage to the top row of the amphitheater (70 rows total) is a cool 100 ft. elevation difference.

Greatest outdoor concert venue in the world.

You know, just once I would like to be able to log into GoDaddy without having to do the “forgot my password” thing.

And since I use the phrase “cool kids”, I now have this song stuck in my head:

re: #118 teleskiguy

Kinda cool that if you walk (or run, whatever your speed) up the Red Rocks Amphitheater stairs 290 times you just climbed Mt. Everest.

re: #121 teleskiguy

And you’re stone out of breath, not to mention out of your flippin’ little mind. But hey, the math looks good!

What about those folks who are out there hopping sideways up the stairs? Is it some arcane ski ritual or just going for extra points?

re: #102 teleskiguy

Fireworks with Firefall last night at Hudson Gardens. Not the same altitude as the Rocks, but a fun concert for us old farts, and some good noisy fireworks. Have to keep ‘em low at the Gardens, so not the high chrysanthemum bursts, but it was nicely timed — only a little rain and the major lightning didn’t start till the fireworks were ending.

(Was highly amused to find that my 16-year-old knows and likes Firefall, having discovered them for himself.)

Those cats are *animals* in every sense of the word. They just gotta go Go GO!

As an afterthought: After Shane McConkey died, people asked his wife “Why did you let him do all this crazy stuff (rad cutting edge skiing, BASE jumping, wingsuit flights), and now he’s dead and you and your daughter don’t have a husband and dad?” Sherri McConkey did not hesitate in her answer, and its eloquence and simplicity is a good reminder for me anyways to keep going: She said that her restricting Shane’s activities because they were too dangerous or whatever would be akin to “caging an eagle.”

Those guys hopping up and down the stairs at Red Rocks Amphitheater are doing that because if they couldn’t do that, it’d be like they were eagles being caged up.

I look on with awe and amazement. No desire to emulate, mind you, but awe.

126 CleverToad  Jul 4, 2015 7:26:04pm

Ah, it’s getting dark out. Starting to hear the bangs and flashes going off around the neighborhood, and the wind must be right, I’m catching a few bars of the symphony concert at Fiddler’s Green, about a mile away.

Happy Independence Day, folks!

Just came by to ask a quick question: Is it just me, or is this piñata creepy as hell?? Damn, I can already feel the nightmares trying to form…

Edit - This is where I found it: designsponge.com

Back from the 4th Party. The rice pudding was a success, and I helped blow off what was probably 3000 - 4000 bucks of fireworks. I have no idea how the show looked, I was running to boxes with a lighter, hit the fuse, then scurry off to the next box to await the sign to light it.

Ears are ringing slightly, my back is sore from volleyball (I play poorly but with little regard for my welfare), I smell of sulfur smoke. In other words, I’m a happy lizard.

Oh great, just when I thought it couldn’t get any worse. Thanks a LOT. //
