Donald Trump Whines About Being Called a Racist Because of His Racist Remarks

But the GOP base loves it

Donald Trump’s racist remarks about Mexican immigrants are causing businesses like Macy’s to have second thoughts about dealing with him; this week they announced they were pulling Trump’s clothing line (which, ironically, is made in Mexico) from their stores, and today Trump is whining about it in classic right wing style.

“I knew it was going to be bad because I was told this. All my life I have been told this: If you are successful, you don’t run for office,” Trump said in an interview on Fox News, addressing the recent spate of businesses that have severed their relationships with his brand. “I didn’t know it was going to be quite this severe, but I really knew it was going to be bad.”

[…]

Trump’s comments have since led a spate of corporations — including Macy’s, NBC Universal, Univision and mattress company Serta — to disavow their partnerships with the business mogul.

The Republican presidential candidate has since defied those companies — even suing Univision for $500 million because of their dropped pageant contract — and defended his statements on immigration.

“It seems like I’m sort of the whipping post because I bring it up. And I don’t understand whether you are liberal or whether you are conservative or whether you are Republican, Democrat — why wouldn’t you talk about a problem?” Trump said Saturday. “The crime is raging. It’s violent, and people don’t want to even talk about it. If you talk about it, you are a racist. I don’t understand it.”

Actually, Trump is a racist not because he wants to “talk about” a real problem, but because he’s spewing hatred at an entire population of people — and because he’s simply wrong. Data show Mexican immigrants (legal or illegal) are in fact less likely to commit crimes.

But meanwhile, the right wing base absolutely loves this kind of anti-Latino racism, and Trump is actually polling in second place among GOP presidential candidates right now, at a time when the Republican Party needs to rebuild its support among minorities.

It might be comical, if it weren’t such a sad, sad picture of the continuing degradation of the US conservative movement into the worst sort of of reactionary xenophobia.

Not only are Latinos not more likely to contribute to this “raging” crime problem, but crime overall has dropped sharply since the 1999s, which means he’s just wrong about everything.

Which also means he’d make a great Republican.

Actually what Greece proves is that Economic Illiteracy + Large-Scale Tax Evasion = Economic Disaster. Not all of the Greek governments that have presided over this years-in-the-making train wreck have been socialist, but they’ve all done economically stupid things and they all failed to stamp out tax evasion.

Trump and Walker are polling seven points behind Bush in New Hampshire. NH has one of the highest white-to-Hispanic ratios in the US, it’s 91% non-Hispanic white, so what’s driving Trump’s polling there?

Part of the right’s ignorant jingoism is the belief that immigrants want to come here because the US is just so awesome. That’s not necessarily true. It’s that they places they live are really horrible and the US is the only reasonable alternative. Honduras is in a really bad situation and northern Mexico has it’s narco culture. Decriminalization could have a huge impact on the narco terrorists but hell no with the right, they want a fence.

It’s just people trying to make a life. Who cares if we’re awesome or if we suck less.

TOP 10 MOST SOCIALIST COUNTRIES IN THE WORLD.

Greece is not on the list.

I note they couldn’t help bringing up ‘the national debt’ repeatedly as if somehow a nation being kind to its citizens was a bad thing and totally responsible for that debt.

I commented early on that Trump didn’t have any idea how much damage he’d do to his brand with his campaign. Now he admits to the damage and how it is more severe than he anticipated. Given that his brand is what’s helped him stay wealthy, it will be interesting to see how the damage to his brand will affect his finances.

As his more questionable activities get more attention (such as Trump University) I’m also hoping people begin to realize how much of his wealth results from unethical and/or fraudulent activities.

Please proceed, Mr. Trump.

You can right-wing socially and still be anti-free market, or you can be economically socialist and still think gay people should be persecuted. What we think of as ‘left’ and ‘right’ socially and economically don’t always go together. It’s just the associations Americans make because of how the coalition politics of our parties have evolved.

And foolishly adopted the Euro.

From what I know it was more foolishness on the EU’s part for accepting Greece into the system. I gather that with a little help from Goldman-Sachs Greece presented bullshit data to the EU.

I am in favour of things like the EU. It’s the only counterbalance to the global economy.

If small nations, or even medium ones, try to do things like enforce laws about pollution or worker safety the large international businesses will tell them, “Okay. Then we’re leaving until you wise up.” The nation’s economy starts to sputter and fail. The international companies then get their way and the citizens of the country are screwed. Their choice is a failed economy or one that doesn’t treat them right.

This is why I’m so distrustful of ‘free trade agreements’. They usually have nothing to do with trade and everything to do with helping huge business interests ignore any attempt at balancing social interests.

Only large nations like the U.S. and China, or semi-nations like the EU can act as a balancing force to this phenomena. They’re large enough businesses pretty much have to play by their rules.

Those nations are probably going to fail eventually. The elites in those nations are often the elites in the businesses, or they will be when they’re done being public servants. The problem is that the global businesses are prepared to conquer but not to rule.

Part of the strength of the American system is that we are both a political and economic union. The EU wants to be an economic union without the political ties, while some states here would like to go back to a confederacy, with some political ties but few economic ones. That didn’t work the first time either.

And we would, if Alabama were a sovereign nation that could borrow in a currency that it doesn’t control.

If Greece had been borrowing in Drachmas, the collapse of the Drachma would devalue its debt as well. But its debt is in a currency the value of which is driven by much larger and more vibrant economies.

Gah, I’d wager to say that the new open carry law isn’t helping. Yes, I realize that the law is for handguns in holsters, but it still contributes to a certain wild west mentality, IMO. That was okay back in the day when the West really was wild and mostly lawless, but now you have urban areas with millions of people and large paramilitary police forces. It’s just… a recipe for disaster.

H/t to John Cole:

With respect to Greece, the precise thing that European elites did to set the current chain of events in motion was to replace private debt with public during the 2010 first “bailout of Greece”. Prior to that event, it was obvious that blame was multipolar. Here are the banks, in France, in Germany, that foolishly lent. Not just to Greece, but to Goldman’s synthetic CDOs and every other piece of idiot paper they could carry with low risk-weights. In 2010, the EU, ECB, and IMF laundered a bailout of mostly French and German banks through the Greek fisc. Cash flowed into Greece only so it could flow out to rickety banks. Now, suddenly, the banks were absolved. There were very few bad loans left on the books of European lenders, everyone was clean, no bad actors at all. Except one. There were the institutions, the “troika”, clearly the good guys, so “helpful” with their generous offer of funds. And then there was Greece. What had been a mudwrestling match, everybody dirty, was transformed into mass of powdered wigs accusing a single filthy penitent (or, when the people with their savings in just-rescued banks decide to be generous, a petulant misbehaving child).

The whole thing was basically a money-laundering operation for the big European banks.

The good news is that the guy polling ahead of Trump is attacking trump for his nasty remarks. The bad news is that his surname is Bush.

The other bad news is Jebby most likely had to have meetings with strategists to determine what stance to take and how to put into words so as to not piss off too many of the party’s rabid base of wingnut.

To me Jeb isn’t showing he is quick on his feet. What does that say about quick thinking while on the job. Not good.

Same problem many of them have had. It took them days to figure out what to say. And then of course you have those like Cruz that still can’t bring themselves to do anything.

That problem is going to be the Republican’s probably through the whole election cycle for 2016. They kissed crazy too much and now they can’t kiss ‘em off.

Like Warren, Sanders says things that sound great and nice. Problem is, they have little in the way of legislation that backs it up. All hat, no cattle as they say.

“I’m dying to know if Jeb Bush attacks Donald Trump for his comments the actual day [Kate Steinle] was murdered by an illegal immigrant or the next day,” she quipped. “I’m gathering he won’t be speaking at her funeral.”

“You know, going into this weekend, the media was consumed with stories, Americans have to be on the lookout for ISIS attacks and terror attack expected, and oh, shark attacks,” Coulter declared. “I will bet you by the end of the weekend, more Americans will have been killed by Mexicans than by ISIS or by sharks.”

DNC or someone like that wanted to include some God-language in the platform. During the convention, where the delegates vote “orally”, there were about the same number of “ayes” as “nays” - at least audibly. The guy who decides these things still ruled the amendments should go in. Apparently that’s where the booing started - because of the decision based on a whim, not because of God as such.

It sounds like a case of rank corruption at the top and highly unsustainable financial schemes with screwball accounting counting debt as money in the bank. That’s not socialism. It’s corruption.

bloomberg.com

” Yet the Athens Games epitomized the structural problems that bedeviled the country for decades. It’s not just a question of how much money was spent on the Olympics, it’s also how it was spent and where it came from. After a period of austerity to tighten up its finances and qualify for euro entry in 2001, the Greek government loosened the purse strings once it entered the single currency. The games were just one of several areas where public spending was unchecked and funded by unsustainable borrowing.”

Oh, for fuck’s sake, Trump’s businesses have tanked at least 3 times where he left shareholders holding the bag, and yet he always comes out clean. Why the other GOP candidates oppo researchers haven’t brought that out is perhaps symbolic of the entire GOP political modus operandi , perhaps?

Perhaps. I would argue that the “average” person has no idea that Trump’s businesses have tanked, that he’s used bankruptcy to escape any personal pain and that his business practices are unethical at a minimum (see Trump University). I think those are the folks who have a rude awakening coming as they realize that his wealth isn’t the result of some amazing business acumen or intelligence. And I suspect that if he lasts long enough to attend a debate, the information will be used by the other candidates to trash Trump.

It’s going to be fun to watch.

Why would there be a stance on Jerusalem in any platform belonging to an American party?

Because Congress passed the Jerusalem Embassy Act in 1995 that indicated that the embassy would move from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. However, Clinton, Bush, and Obama have all had authority to delay that move for foreign policy reasons - and have continued to do so because it would undermine the nominal peace process between Israelis and Palestinians that Oslo had outlined on the final status of lands relating to 1967 outside the Green Line.

I don’t agree. The nature of presidential elections nowadays is that the candidate never does the ‘rapid response’; that task is left to people slightly below the campaign’s top echelon: People high enough that the press will go to them but just low enough that they can be thrown under the bus if they piss off too many people or if the campaign needs to make a personnel change to allay concerns of communications difficulties.

For Jeb to say anything right after Trump’s Mega-DERP would have been risky, and modern primaries are not won by taking risks.

re: #4 Dark_Falcon

The good news is that the guy polling ahead of Trump is attacking trump for his nasty remarks. The bad news is that his surname is Bush.

And with Jeb Bush acting as Big Dog, Rick Perry follows him against Donald Trump as Me-Too:

Rick Perry has joined the chorus of current and former Republican presidential candidates condemning Donald Trump over comments the real estate mogul made about Mexican immigrants.

“Donald Trump does not represent the Republican Party,” the former Texas governor said on ABC News’ “This Week” on Sunday. “I was offended by his remarks.”

During a speech last month launching his campaign, Trump vowed to build a wall between Mexico and the United States to keep Mexican criminals and “rapists” from crossing the border.

“They are bringing drugs, they’re bringing crime, they are rapists,” Trump said. “And some are good people.”

“Hispanics in America and Hispanics in Texas, from the Alamo to Afghanistan, have been extraordinary people, citizens of our country and of our state,” Perry said. “To paint with that broad a brush that Donald Trump did … he’s going to have to defend those remarks. I never will. And I will stand up and say that those are offensive, which they were.”

Since Rick Perry once again in his life followed along in the wake of a member of the Bush family, he gets no credit from me for going after Donald Trump. However, neither does Perry suffer the odium of being associated with Trump’s bigoted words, since he condemned those words sufficiently.

Since Rick Perry once again in his life followed along in the wake of a member of the Bush family, he gets no credit from me for going after Donald Trump. However, neither does Perry suffer the odium of being associated with Trump’s bigoted words, since he condemned those words sufficiently.

This is nearly certain to be my first and last pro-Rick Perry post, but he has been on the saner side of the GOP spectrum on immigration issues since the last cycle. That cost him some support then…along with the fact he appeared to be crazy and/or stupid a number of times.

For the lizards who don’t follow soccer/football, the US and Japanese womens teams are playing for the world championship.

The score is currently US 4, JPN 1.

For perspective, the game for third place had a score of 1-0 (in overtime).
Semi-final games had scores of 2-0 and 2-1.

So more goals have been scored in this game than both previous games combined.

And speaking of the South I have some good news, and some bad but expected news. First the good news:

Bubba Watson to paint over Confederate flag on General Lee

Bubba Watson has owned the General Lee from the 1970s and ’80s TV show “The Dukes of Hazzard” since 2012. On Thursday evening, Watson, who bought the car at auction for $110,000 and restored its interior, announced he is making a drastic change to the car’s appearance. Watson tweeted he’ll paint over the Confederate battle flag on the car’s roof.

Watson announced the change on Twitter:

But back in 2012, Watson sang a different tune:

In February 2012, Watson had offered to drive the General Lee, which he has driven to past PGA Tour events, to a NASCAR race in Phoenix. The auto-racing body denied Watson’s offer, consistent with their long-held views on the Confederate flag.

“The show was not racist. But I understand why people would get upset with the flag,” Watson said in February 2012 at the Northern Trust Open in the wake of NASCAR’s decision.

“Obviously, I don’t stand for the Confederate flag,” Watson added. “The Confederate flag was not used (in the show) for what people see it as today, so that’s sad. But NASCAR was built on moonshining, so the show was built on moonshining. I thought it was fun. I didn’t buy the car to get publicity; I bought it because I love it.”

So this is a flip flop for Bubba Watson. But you know what? I’m OK with that. Sometimes, given human nature, it takes something very tragic for us to see things as they really are. “The Dukes of Hazzard” didn’t use the Confederate flag as a hate symbol, but it is used as such by some people, most recently by a horrendous murderer.

Under those circumstances, Watson is right to get rid of the Stars and Bars. The name ‘General Lee’ can remain, for Lee was not a hater and though a rebel he was never a terrorist.

The Cubs have won five of their last six and they have a winning record. They won’t beat the Cardinals (unless Major League Baseball issues some sort of draconian sanction on St. Louis for its hacking of the Houston Astros), but the wildcard berth is a real possibility.

And for the Bad But Predictable News, we turn to NASCAR’s fans:

NASCAR fans defend, display Confederate flags at Daytona

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Steven Rebenstorf has numerous flags flying atop his canopy tent inside Daytona International Speedway.

The Confederate flag is front and center.

It’s been like that for years. And the 57-year-old Rebenstorf has no plans to take it down — not even if NASCAR decides to ban the embattled flag from its racetracks.

“They’d have to come and get it,” Rebenstorf said Saturday, pointing out that his American flag purposely flies a few inches higher than the rest.

MELON LABEL!

And for the excuse that guy offered:

“The Confederate flag has absolutely nothing to do with slavery. It has nothing to do with divisiveness. It has nothing to do with any of that,” Rebenstorf said, pausing for a few minutes to pull off his floppy hat, stand at attention and salute during the national anthem Saturday. “It was just a battle banner until the Ku Klux Klan draped it around themselves. Now, all of a sudden, it represents slavery and that’s not at all true.”

I think the Germans did worse to Brazil a couple of years ago (and Brazil was the host nation) Everything went right and everything went wrong. That and the defense never got their stuff together.

Yeah, you know what we call that? Not a “flip flop”, because that’s rightist shit. No, we call it “changing one’s opinion based on evidence”.

The way I thought of it was the guy just didn’t give it (the flag) enough thought. I think people were so used to seeing it that they probably accepted the heritage BS and stopped there.
