An Open Letter to South Carolina Gov. @NikkiHaley: Bree Newsome Should Take Down the Confederate Flag

The power of symbols

When African American activist Bree Newsome scaled the flagpole and took down the Confederate battle flag on the grounds of the South Carolina statehouse and was immediately arrested, she epitomized the growing revulsion of Americans for this divisive symbol of slavery and racism.

Now that the South Carolina legislature has voted to do the same thing Bree Newsome did, I call on Governor Nikki Haley to pardon Newsome for any charges that are still outstanding for her act of civil disobedience. And more than that…

Governor Haley, this entire debate has been about the power of symbolism to inspire people to both noble and horrible acts. Governor Haley, you should ask Bree Newsome to repeat her act of civil disobedience, but with the full approval of this new legislation, and take down the Confederate battle flag from the South Carolina statehouse grounds for the final time.

And this time she won’t need to scale the pole. She can take it down from the ground, with the full approval of the state of South Carolina.

What greater symbolism could there be, in a national debate over the power of symbols?

Drop the charges. No property was damaged, nor were threats made. Completely non violent. Allow Bree Newsome to come to the capitol and lower that flag for once and for all time. People and politicians have the opportunity in their lives, if they are lucky, to do the right and just thing for posterity. It comes seldom. This is a moment. Seize it Haley. I’m not going to be long with you folks this evening. The Scuba Van and Trailer are on their way back from Alabama (A summer camp program last few days), and when it gets back around midnight we’ve got to unload it, refill all the air tanks, reload it because it’s going out again at 5am on a trip to Morehead City NC. (Wish I was going on that trip, sharks, ship wrecks, sharks, German U-boat, oh, and sharks)

I volunteered to handle the task, since it’s not hard, just time consuming. That will let the owners rest up since they are back behind the wheel in the AM.

And yes, they have made a point to tell me that this will be remembered.

Technical note. It isn’t the fence that stops the stock car. It is the 5 or more 3/4” to 1” steel cables running through the fence. The fence stops the smaller and loose parts and sometimes fails at that.

Those same steel cables would actually help a human across a fence…gives then a nice object to grab and act as rungs of a ladder and firms up the fence wire.

A car would go right through the fence pictured above.

I’m pretty sure the state of South Carolina could provide enough security to protect Bree Newsome if they do ask her to take down the flag.

And taking it down at a state-approved event would be much less dangerous than what she’s already done.

I don’t really hope this is going to happen - I’m not that naïve any more. But it would make an already powerful moment in US history much more memorable. It’s worth bringing it up.

We were at Fenwick Island Delaware many moon ago. I like Fenwick. Still do. My older boy was around 12, in the surf when there was a commotion. Life guard waving all in. Whistles blowing. People standing, looking. I’m thinking…Rip tide? Surf was getting a bit rough. My boy came up in a bit, plopped down and start laughing. I said, what’s up? He tells me the life guard saw a shark and lost her mind. My boy was standing there telling her “IT’S A RAY!” Nope. OUT NOW!!!!. Happened numerous times and that’s without chunks missing in NC.

A Republican-backed bill to ban abortions after 20 weeks from fertilization passed the Assembly on Thursday and headed to the desk of Gov. Scott Walker.

Action on the bill came four days before the Republican governor plans to announce his bid for the presidency Monday in Waukesha. The first vehicle I ever owned was a 1987 Jeep Grand Wagoneer, with wood panels and everything. Loved that boat. Had to replace the camshaft and sell it at a loss. I bought a Dodge Neon after that. I still drive a small car today (Toyota Corolla).

Still, I almost bought one of those new Toyota FJ Cruisers, and now Jeep may bring back the old Cherokee Chief Commando.

Where I live having a set of motorized wheels is kind of a necessity. No bus drops you off at the grocery store and the nearest bus stop from my house is four miles, a long way to walk. There’s just a few bus routes a day that’ll take you “up-valley” to the ski areas.

Where I live having a set of motorized wheels is kind of a necessity. No bus drops you off at the grocery store and the nearest bus stop from my house is four miles, a long way to walk. There’s just a few bus routes a day that’ll take you “up-valley” to the ski areas.

My water district recently sued Selleck for illegal water usage.

The vehicle that officials say was used to pilfer water from a Ventura County water district’s fire hydrant was a white water tender truck, not a red Ferrari driven by a mustachioed man in a Detroit Tigers baseball cap and a Hawaiian shirt.

But in a complaint filed by the Calleguas Municipal Water District, the utility points the finger at “Magnum, P.I.” star Tom Selleck — and they say they hired a real P.I. to prove it.

As California’s historic drought worsened, water from a public hydrant was delivered to Selleck’s sprawling Hidden Valley ranch, according to court documents filed against the veteran actor.

Before filing the complaint, the water district tried to get Selleck to stop taking water from the hydrant. In November 2013, Calleguas sent cease-and-desist letters to both Selleck’s home and an Avenue of the Stars address linked to the property, according to court papers.

I don’t get why he didn’t make an effort to ensure he was buying legally sourced water after the C&D letters, because it’s impossible for him to argue now that he wasn’t notified of the problem. It also looks especially bad because his property isn’t even served by Calleguas. Maybe his wells ran dry, but he had options and should have availed themselves of them. A relatively minor civil offense under the law but it might as well be a felony in the eyes of many people who live here and have to deal with an historic drought.

Anyway it’s a nice truck, I just don’t understand why they had to douche it up.

OT- In Philosophy there is a paradox called The Ship Of Theseus. Theseus’ ship was preserved by the Athenians for centuries, by replacing planks as they rotted away with new planks. Eventually every single piece of the boat had been replaced, so that even though it had been in continous existence, not one particle of the original material remained. Was it the same ship?

I find myself in a similar paradox with (my Grandfather)Pap’s watch. Major parts of it are completely worn out. It might not be possible, no matter how much of the movement I replace, to get it working properly. OTOH, I have just acquired another movement of the same make and model, made no more than a year later (ca 1904). It’s running beautifully, and has none of the problems of the original movement in Pap’s watch.

If I replace the original movement with this one, is it still Pap’s Watch? If not, how much of the original movement can I replace with parts from the running one, and still have it be Pap’s Watch?

Remember a few weeks ago, when a story was bouncing around the news about a Republican presidential hopeful Jeb Bush’s past statements about what he saw as a socially damaging decline in public shaming of single parents?

Did anyone stop to wonder what, exactly, might lead a politician trying to appeal to evangelical voters to equate insufficient shame around single parenthood with American cultural decay, and to recommend increased shaming of misbehaving young people as a means of national revival?

If you’re wondering now, there is a book for you: Virgin Nation: Sexual Purity and American Adolescence (Oxford University Press, 2015), by Sara Moslener.

Moslener, who earned a Ph.D. in religious studies at Claremont Graduate University and who now teaches at Central Michigan University, elucidates what she sees as longstanding connections between two strands of evangelical anxiety: worries having to do with the sexual purity of adolescents, and worries about American national well-being.

Anyone who has been around evangelicalism for any time at all is well aware of the emphasis placed within this subculture on “purity,” by which is meant virginity until marriage for both males and females.

Teenagers and young adults are taught to regard purity as an integral—perhaps even as the central—element in their religious identity, and to regard premarital sex with horror and aversion.

You might think that parents would be the ones charged with inculcating values—including values around sex and sexuality—in their offspring, but in the present day climate of youth culture and mass media the job of getting adolescents onto the purity bandwagon is increasingly outsourced to faith-based purity organizations.

Two of the most prominent of these are True Love Waits (see also here)-which encourages youth to make publicly spoken commitments to remain sexually abstinent until marriage; and Silver Ring Thing-which is a traveling multimedia show incorporating elements of fantasy and parody to make its case for sexual abstinence, the impossibility of this apart from a personal relationship with Jesus, and the desirability of a symbolically-freighted piece of jewelry—the “silver ring”—that is available for purchase only by attendees of Silver Ring Thing events.

If you think this is all weirdly fascinating enough to be of interest to scholars of American religion and culture, you would be right.

Most scholars trace the rise of the evangelical purity movement to the cultural shifts of the 1960s, with the purity movement originating in response to the loosened sexual mores of that time.

The contribution of Moslener to this conversation is her sense that the historical narrative needs to start further back, if sense is to be made of certain elements of purity culture rhetoric.

In particular is the explicit use of apocalyptic imagery in connection with sexual morality. Moslener cites a ditty that is performed at Silver Ring Thing events:

The world says use a condom
If we told you you’d be fine / we’d be lying to your face
It’s like playing with a nuclear bomb
You could wipe out the whole human race

The connection between condoms and nuclear holocaust is, as Moslener notes, neither explained or defended by the producers of Silver Ring Thing; it is simply assumed. Why? Exploration of this question forms the substance of Moslener’s book.

Moslener’s sense is that evangelical purity culture (as opposed to traditional Christian emphasis on the reservation of sexual expression to the maritalMKP relationship) got its start in the late 19th century, as white evangelicals began to lose their hitherto unquestioned grip on mainstream American culture.

Waves of immigration of non-white, non-Anglo Saxon, non-Protestants threatened to overturn the prior status quo, and white evangelicals responded with a range of social reform movements that privileged bourgeois (read: white, middle-class, Protestant) respectability. Temperance was one such movement; purity was another.

Hence the focus, Moslener thinks, of the purity movement on specifically adolescent sexuality. It is in the bodies and (sexual) behavior of teenagers that the battle for Anglo-Saxon and specifically American supremacy is being fought.

Moslener traces the development of purity culture from its 19th-century origins through the fundamentalist-modernist controversy of the 1920s, the anticommunism of the Cold War era, and the rise of the family-values movement in the 1970s and 1980s, in which evangelicals drew explicit connections between moral decay and national decline, on the one hand, and strong families and a strong (American) nation on the other.

Researchers at the University of California, San Diego and the School of Medicine have found that the three-dimensional shape of the cerebral cortex - the wrinkled outer layer of the brain controlling many functions of thinking and sensation - strongly correlates with ancestral background. The study, published online July 9 in Current Biology, opens the door to more precise studies of brain anatomy going forward and could eventually lead to more personalized medicine approaches for diagnosing and treating brain diseases.

“The geometry of the brain’s cortical surface contains rich information about ancestry,” said the study’s first author, Chun Chieh Fan, MD, a graduate student in cognitive science. “Even in the modern contemporary U.S. population, with its melting pot of different cultures, it was still possible to correlate brain cortex structure to ancestral background.”

Four continental populations were used as ancestral references: European, West African, East Asian and Native American. The metrics for summarizing genetic ancestry in each ancestral component were standardized as proportions ranging from 0 to 100 percent.

“We looked to see how well we could predict how much genetic ancestry they had from Africa, Europe and so forth,” said study co-author Terry Jernigan, PhD, professor of cognitive science, psychiatry and radiology, adding that cortex differences between various lineages were focused in certain areas. “There were various systematic differences, particularly in the folding and gyrification patterns of the cortex,” said Jernigan, also director of the university’s Center for Human Development. “Those patterns were quite strongly reflective of genetic ancestry.”

Hmmm, this has all the makings of a front page worthy scandal here in the US, except few in the US media are even paying attention.

What happens when a former VP of the US gets into hot water over meetings in Ireland that aren’t supposed to have happened, and money was to be exchanged that was intercepted? Apparently Irish investigators are taking a closer look at VP Dan Quayle and Cerberus Partners (where he’s chair of global investments).

Mr Wallace claimed that £7 million (𠫉.8 million) that was lodged by former managing partner at Tughans, Ian Coulter, was reportedly intended for a Northern Ireland politician or party. Mr Coulter subsequently left the law firm and the money was retrieved.

Assistant chief constable Will Kerr of PSNI Crime Operations said: “We believe that there is sufficient concern in relation to potential criminal activity, surrounding this property deal, to instigate an investigation.
It is understood that the UK National Crime Agency, which deals with serious organised crime across international borders, is one of the agencies that will assist the PSNI. This is because the investigation relates to Nama in the Republic, to US firm Cerberus, which bought the 850-property portfolio, and to another American company, Pimco, which in disputed circumstances withdrew from the sale.

Meanwhile, confusion surrounds the status of a meeting between Cerberus, First Minister Peter Robinson and others at Stormont just 10 days before the US company bought the 850-property Nama portfolio for less than £1.5 million.

Mr Coulter also attended this meeting.

Cerberus has characterised the meeting on March 25th last year between former US vice-president Dan Quayle, who is chairman of Cerberus’ global investments, and Mr Robinson, then finance minister Simon Hamilton, and Mr Coulter as an “official” meeting.

International flights allow 2 checked bags, 50 lbs each, but she’s going to LA first for training, then flying domestic to Logan Airport — only 1 bag allowed and the extra bag costs money. Her flights aren’t booked yet, so we don’t know how much the extra bag would cost.

I had a deep red betta in a goldfish bowl with one green (plastic) plant once, and experienced the same thing. A Betta swimming is hypnotic.

It is not about banning a particular symbol, it is about removing it from settings where it is inappropriate, such as above any government building, where the ideology behind the flag would gain a cachet of approval.

Disney just wants to avoid any possible controversy and protests that might detract from their brand. They are a business, and it was a business-related decision.

It is devastating when I lose one. I have it fairly heavily planted, but otherwise it is very low maintenance. I do not feed the fish, nor use any chemicals. It is a self sustaining ecosystem, attracting bugs, bees, frogs, snails, and other critters. Highly recommended for entertainment value alone!

That’s the one thing on my wish list I never made happen when I lived in an actual house. Had a beautiful spot picked out by my aviaries, plans, and lists but a koi pond never materialized. I be jealous.

I probably would have never thought to have one, being perfectly content with my aquarium. But it was already here when we bought the house. It had no plants and gets direct sun most of the day, so to keep the fish shaded and protected from birds, I started adding plants. They sure do add a lot.

For the first time ever we are not doing the work needed on the house. Since we are old, we accepted that we must pay others to do this. As the house is 20 years old …first floor flooring, painting and other small things are being done.

The whole first floor is in dissarray. I’m have no place to be, but the bedroom upstairs.

My good friend the dog trainer uses that tennis ball slinger to toss tennis balls to the pooches he works with. Good that it grasps the ball from on the ground so you don’t have to grab the slobbery ball! That is if the doggy is good at dropping the ball so you can toss it again. Most of his clients seem to like the little tug of war to get the ball back from out of their mouth.

150 years after the end of the Civil War, conservative bigots are still bigots. Trying to skate on the fact that the Party of Lincoln emancipated the slaves doesn’t give the modern GOP the right to claim that they are champions of civil rights, not when the modern GOP stands opposed to civil rights, protecting minorities, and ensuring equal protection and equal justice under the law.

The confederate flag is a symbol, but one that the right wing, which is tied to the GOP, seems completely tied to and for which it is fighting to keep around, even though it’s the flag of insurrectionists, slave-holders, and insurgents who fought against the Union in part to protect the institution of slavery.

That the then Democrats have shifted party affiliations to the modern GOP shouldn’t be overlooked. That’s what’s changed. Racism and segregation still have to be overcome. The symbol of the confederate flag is just that - a symbol, but there is far more important work to be done like fixing the VRA and enforcing federal laws promoting equal rights and equal protection under the law.

Yet, it seems the GOP wants to undermine those laws and protections all while wrapping up their cause as religious freedom. Never mind that the same arguments were made to protect segregation and Jim Crow. It’s the same story, repeated again as a stutter. And this time, we need to be vigilant to make sure that the changes and protections to minorities is lasting.

Really, I’ve gained tremendous respect for Carter. In the 1990’s I listed to one of his autobiographies —he narrated it himself. He talked about some rather personal stuff he had to “admit” to doing wrong (quitting the Navy without telling Roselyn and repairing his relationships with his sons).

He does live his Christian values - doesn’t just wear them on his sleeve.

Sometimes I think he would have made a tremendous preacher —one I might actually be able to respect.

I know what you mean-you can’t tell the players without a program. I think Tax Foundation leans anti-tax without lying about numbers.

I always find the sort of comparison in the link to be fairly useless-kind of like “Best Places to Retire” lists. Sure, my dollar would go farther in MS than here in CA, but salaries are probably lower in MS and I would not like the climate. We are really fortunate to be able to live where we do, and I will cheerfully give up some of what I could buy with the money I would save by living in MS, to live here.

I know there are people who love living in MS, and this isn’t intended to put down their preference. It is just to point out that cost of living is not the end all and be all in picking a spot to live.

I heard some science podcast a few weeks ago about the genetics of gender. It was all to involved for me. The gist was that for a male fetus to be created the female gene (not the proper vocabulary word) had to be folded or repressed (again not proper vocabulary word).

I got the idea that only certain traits were had to be allowed to be expressed —to make the male fetus.

I know what you mean-you can’t tell the players without a program. I think Tax Foundation leans anti-tax without lying about numbers.

I always find the sort of comparison in the link to be fairly useless-kind of like “Best Places to Retire” lists. Sure, my dollar would go farther in MS than here in CA, but salaries are probably lower in MS and I would not like the climate. We are really fortunate to be able to live where we do, and I will cheerfully give up some of what I could buy with the money I would save by living in MS, to live here.

I know there are people who love living in MS, and this isn’t intended to put down their preference. It is just to point out that cost of living is not the end all and be all in picking a spot to live.

I can drive to a decent deli in less than 6 hours.

It depends on whether he says something so outrageous as to alienate any support (which, at this point, would have to be something like “Yes, I fuck ferrets. I fuck ferrets better and more often than Jeb Bush has ever fucked a ferret. Now watch me fuck this ferret.” Although, really, it still makes him a better choice than Ted Cruz), or he just peaks at the 15% or so he has now, and as other candidates drop out, their support goes to Jeb Bush.

Gah…the casual brutality of the way African slaves were treated. I was wikiwalking, reading about Alexandre Dumas père, whose son, Dumas fils, wrote the novel The Lady of the Camellias (on which the later Camille films were based). I’d completely forgotten that the elder Dumas’ father, Thomas-Alexandre Dumas, was half black.

Reading about him is where it got brutal. His mother, Marie-Cessette Dumas, was a slave who belonged to his father, a French nobleman named Alexandre Antoine Davy de la Pailleterie, who apparently purchased her in Saint-Domingue (now Haiti) after following his younger brother, who had married a wealthy French Creole widow and taken over her sugar plantation, there.

Antoine apparently paid an “exorbitant price” for her—I’ll bet it wasn’t nearly enough for whatever she had to endure. Anyway, she became Antoine’s concubine and resided with him at his coffee and cacao plantation. She had three children with him, Thomas-Alexandre in 1762 and two daughters after that. She also had a third daughter but it wasn’t clear if she was also fathered by Antoine or someone else. I’m gonna assume she was Antoine’s as it’s hard to imagine another slaveholder selling Marie-Cessette and allowing her to keep her child.

When Antoine decided to return to France in 1775, he sold Marie-Cessette and his daughters and took 13-year-old Thomas-Alexandre back to France with him. That’s where I stopped reading.

I simply cannot wrap my head around people thinking it’s okay to buy & sell other human beings—selling off not only the woman who has shared your life & bed for many years, but also ¾ of the children you had with her is just… NO. How could you? You fathered them, watched them grow up…. Did you feel nothing for them, you heartless bastard??

For days now, I’ve been trying to get the “long s” to appear on here. Dropping the bare Unicode doesn’t work, and to my dismay I discover that the “insert” button has disappeared from Character Palette Viewer (WTF?) in Yosemite. Now I discover you have to drag-and-drop it.
