I would be savoring this moment a lot more if I were not reminded of the tragic incident that precipitated this whole affair, and why it had to come to something like that to get people to finally realize what that symbol in that spot really meant.

Pretty much. Have to get some sort of “win” out of all this, since they failed to shout down the demands for the flag to be removed and they’ve totally lost the argument that the flag is anything but a symbol of slavery and racism. So now they’re trying to convince anybody who will listen that this is a really a “win” for Republicans, when it was Republicans who had to be drug kicking and screaming to this point.

Wingnuts have long taken a few scattered incidents of blacks on the confederate side (never officially and never in uniform) as “proof” the CSA wasn’t racist. It’s like saying the NAZIs weren’t anti-Semitic because there where a few Jewish troops fighting for Finland on the Axis side against the Soviets. In both cases, they’re just weird historical footnotes, not really impacting the big picture.

There were plenty of “volunteers” from the countries that Germany invaded who fought for the Nazis as well, if by “volunteer” one means “pressed into service as an alternative to execution.”

The “Confederate negro soldiers” bit is a myth and has been for years. Nobody in academia with a modicum of intellectual honesty buys into the idea, because the Confederacy was all about white supremacy, from top to bottom. They barred “volunteers” from serving all the way to March 1865, because to accept negro soldiers would have been to admit that they were equal to white soldiers, something they simply could not accept. And morons like Williams will tell you that the North didn’t pay black soldiers as much as white ones, but at least they paid them. Most “volunteers” had their wages go to their owner, same as if he was renting them out to a factory boss.

Exactly. They were afraid of slaves running away and not being returned. Because the slave owners knew the slaves didn’t want to be there. So I am sure they were going to hand 1000 slaves loaded weapons and send them off with one white commander with the faith that they wouldn’t just off that commander and run away, armed this time.

They really need to get their talking points in order. Either it’s a Democratic symbol, and they should be happy it’s coming down, or it’s a conservative symbol currently favored by the GOP, and they need to own their shit.

It’s also interesting to me how they’ve tried to spin this into “We’re taking down the flag because it is offensive to certain sensibilities, ergo all offensive things must be removed” vs. “We’re removing a symbol of actual racism, slavery, violence, and oppression.”

Here’s a link to a write-up on Roof and the NCIS background check.

In short what happened is that the dealer received a “delay” determination on the initial background check. When a dealer doesn’t receive a definite approval or denial on the purchase within 3 business days, they are allowed to sell the gun to the customer at their discretion. In Roof’s case, the gun dealer elected to sell him the gun (many of the larger chain stores won’t sell without a definitive approval).

Nine murders (this time) and 50+ years (actually it’s 54 years since the flag was first flown in protest of desegregation efforts in SC).

The GOP is the party standing in opposition to equal rights and equal protection under law today. What Lincoln did in no way reflects on the current GOP efforts deny rights to minorities (up to and including disinfrachisement efforts, applauding the VRA decision by the Supreme Court, which calls on Congress to re-enact the formula provisions, and which they’ve done nothing so far, etc.).

The Party of Lincoln is the GOP in name only. Their itinerary and agenda has incorporated the conservative secessionists and race-baiters who opposed the CRA and VRA and desegregation and equal rights for all under the law.

Meanwhile, looks like someone screwed up and the Charleston shooter should never have been able to purchase a gun legally - but for an improper entry in the database.

The white gunman who massacred nine black churchgoers last month in Charleston, South Carolina was only able to purchase the gun he used in the shooting because of an “error” in the background check system, the FBI said Friday.

“This case rips all of our hearts out, but the thought that an error on our part is connected to a gun this person used to slaughter these people is very painful to us,” FBI Director James Comey told reporters, as quoted by The Washington Post.

Comey said that Roof’s admission to narcotics possession in February was not properly entered into the agency’s National Instant Criminal Background Check System due to a record-keeping error, according to the Post.

Contrary reports in the days after the shooting indicated that the shooter, 21-year-old Dylann Roof, purchased the gun legally despite an arrest on drug charges. Current and former officials with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives told NBC News at the time that Roof’s purchase was legal under federal gun laws.

Comey’s comments Friday appeared to remove any doubt that current gun laws should have prevented Roof from purchasing a gun. “We are all sick this happened,” Comey said. “We wish we could turn back time.”

Not exactly

He did end up caving on that.
Though he has been a lot better than most republicans on the issue.

When Sen. McCain (Ariz.) first ran for president in 2000, he said the flag “was a symbol of racism,” then reversed course, releasing a statement saying he actually thought the flag was “a symbol of heritage.”

“I feared that if I answered honestly, I could not win the South Carolina primary,” McCain said back then.

He later regretted defending the flag. Since then, McCain is perhaps the most vocal Republican critic of the Confederate flag — and he paid for that, too.

The ruling shows the Kleins “brought the case to the media’s attention and kept it there by repeatedly appearing in public to make statements deriding” the couple who filed the complaint.

“It was foreseeable that this attention would negatively impact (the Bowman-Cryers), making (the Kleins) liable for any resultant emotional suffering experienced by (them),” the agency found.

Not only that, as the blog explains, the bakery owners shared the couple’s personal contact information - which led to death threats that nearly caused them to lose custody of their foster children.

Laurel Bowman-Cryer filed the complaint in January 2013, after she and her mother had met with Aaron Klein - who refused them service and quoted an anti-LGBT verse from Leviticus.

She filed her complaint by smartphone, which prevented her from seeing a disclaimer notifying her that her full name and address would be sent to the bakery owners - and Aaron Klein shared that information, along with the complaint, on his personal Facebook page.

Where is their work ethic?

That’d be anyone who voted for the sequester (which was cheered by the GOP btw because it meant cutting government spending, even if it meant cutting military spending).

BTW, anyone notice that there are reports that the US Army will be cutting 40,000 troops and that it will hit a number of southern states particularly hard? Well, that’s also the result of the sequester. Reduce government spending across the board, and it will hit the military too. By 2017, the troop levels will be below pre 9/11 figures. That’s even as the military ties itself to the faulty F-35 program that will cost over $1 trillion and still isn’t able to do any of its primary missions well (let alone dogfight, use guns, certain missiles, or do air to ground - which are critical missions in the real world). That’s money that could go to programs that actually work, or to other parts of the budget that make sense - like infrastructure (which includes everything from roads, rails, to electric network, sewer/water, and cybersecurity).

They are perfectly free to fly the flag at their private residence. Have any of them decided to do so? You know, let the neighbors know about their pride in their Southern Heritage?

No?

Huh.

I expect many of them do fly it at home and have it on their trucks. I was a newlywed Yankee military wife who moved to the area and one of the first things that caught my eye was the many vehicles with confederate flag crap all over it. I was born in TX and used to spend lots of time there with my grandmother up until college (granted, in civilized Dallas but we used to drive around shopping and dining etc) and didn’t see the stars and bars flying. My grandmother was quite the liberal and was a transplanted Michigander who would have made sure to educate me had we seen the confederate flag. She was a sociology prof so may have even made me write a paper about it, no joke. So it wasn’t widely or proudly displayed back in the 80s in civilized areas.

Anyway, we moved after I got married and I’m surrounded by vehicles with the actual SC flag next to the stars and bars. At first I was thinking I’d been dumped into a land of racist ? Turks or something? Then I realized the crescent moon thing was the actual SC flag lol.

What would be enough? Head on a pike?

Oh wait - they want hearings. Because nothing does Congress better than hearings where the honorable members get to speechify before cameras and listen to themselves pontificate while the person brought before the hearing has no time to respond to the claims.

And hearings give the GOP plenty of time to bash the Administration, which also forms a fundraising reason for holding the hearings.

Figures.

You know what would be enough? Fully fund these agencies and bring all their activities back into the actual government instead of relying on a bizarre patchwork of public and privatized agencies. That would seriously piss off a whole lot of folks who have made millions (maybe billions) since the late 90s.

The GOP obviously isn’t the party to do that.

I’m carrying on a minor debate with a “As a business owner I can discriminate against any one I want,” wingnut. His was in response to a picture of a nurse saying she had treat everybody the same and there was no reason for others to do so.

When I asked him “What’s the difference between a public servant and a business owner” he immediately pulled out the “If you have to ask that question you’re too stupid to understand” card. That sorry ploy took much less time to occur than I expected.

Nope: spot on, even if a tad unfair. The Cuban Revolution in 1960-61 pretty much dispossessed most of the Cuban middle and professional class along with the “aristocrats”: most of the “exiles” who settled in the US (mainly but not exclusively in Florida) were robbed of most or all of what they owned by Castro and his cohorts, and haven’t forgotten it in over 50 years. Yes, the intransigent attitudes Marco Rubio is pandering to get less and less relevant with each passing year, but there is still a core constituency there for whom the validation of the Revolution (no matter how long ago) by official US recognition is a bitter pill to swallow. Oh, and they are or were a solid Republican voting bloc: mainly out of spite for John Kennedy, and the failed Bay of Pigs invasion of April, 1961.

QFT. They shut down the F22 for the F35. And look at the age of the AWACS and JSTARS and the KC135 fleets. No plan to do anything with the AWACS and JSTARS for another 20 years.

Nobody “supports the troops” by providing them with what they really need. Nobody.
