Worst Idea Ever? “Swastika Rehabilitation Day”

Not gonna happen
WTF • Views: 64,458

There are so many bad ideas floating around the Internet that it’s basically impossible to pick out one and say this is the worst idea ever. But I think I’ve stumbled across one that has to be in the top (or bottom) five.

Without further ado, allow me to present… International Swastika Rehabilitation Day.

It’s today, folks.

These people don’t appear to be neo-Nazis and this doesn’t look like a hate group. They point out that the swastika has been used by many religions throughout history as a symbol of “well-being.” And this is true.

But somebody who cares about these well-meaning folks needs to pull them aside and gently break it to them that THIS ISN’T GOING TO HAPPEN.

Good intentions, road to hell, you know the drill.

UPDATE at 7/11/15 12:37:18 pm by Charles Johnson

But wait, it gets better! (Or worse, as the case may be.) A WHOIS lookup on this domain name reveals that it’s owned by… wait for it… the International Raelian Movement. Which explains a lot. (h/t: CuriousLurker.)

A Swastika inside a Star of David? Wow, how’s THAT for some imagery?

I can sort of understand what they are trying to do here, BUT the problem is that for 70 years now the Swastika has and continues to be used as a symbol of White Supremacy and/or Nazi ideology and/or hatred of Jews.

A few well meaning people aren’t going to break that. It’s too ingrained in culture worldwide.

As a Christian, I’d like to rehabilitate the cross. It’s become a symbol of oppression used by far too many of my brethren.

It was and is a neutral or positive symbol in Finland, for the Hopis and the Hindus…but one little Austrian corporal has really messed it up for a long, long time

Confederate Flag sales soar in Colorado

LITTLETON, Colo. — On the heels of the Confederate flag coming down at the South Carolina statehouse, sales of the flag are soaring in Colorado.

Despite the controversy, A House of Flags in Littleton isn’t pulling the rebel banner from the showroom floor.

In previous years, the store would sell less than six a month. In recent weeks, 85 confederate flags have been sold.
Owner John Seebeck expects demand for the flag to rise.

“People have thought about getting the Confederate flag, now they’re more urgent to get some some, not knowing what the future will bring,” said Seebeck.

“When this first started, we did order several hundred more flags and we’re going through those very quickly.”

The majority of Seebeck’s buyers purchase in-store, but online sales have also risen.

Early Christian imagery did not rely on the cross at all, the first known depiction of the crucifiction of Jesus dates from the 4th century: the focus on the early religion was not the suffering of Christ but rather his miracles and his resurrection.

The Raëlians frequently use the swastika as a symbol of peace, which halted Raëlian requests for territory in Israel, and later Lebanon, for establishing an embassy for extraterrestrials. The religion also uses the swastika embedded on the Star of David.[9] Starting around 1991, this symbol was often replaced by a variant star and swirl symbol as a public relations move, particularly toward Israel.

Scientology ain’t got nothing on some of this stuff.

One fairly recent development I’ve found fascinating is that the Nation of Islam has pretty much hooked up with Scientology.

This snippet mentions it:

Since 2010, Minister Louis Farrakhan has strongly encouraged members to study Dianetics. The Nation currently claims it has trained more than a thousand auditors, or personal spiritual counselors, in Scientology.

According to Minister Donald Muhammad of local Mosque 28 on West Florissant Ave., that includes 30 auditors in the St. Louis area.

“Actually, we have here at Muhammad’s Mosque become auditors in the field of Dianetics. In other words, we provide therapy on each other through the process of auditing,” said Muhammad.

He said Scientology offers a framework that helps members better realize their spiritual potential without compromising their beliefs.

“In the Hadith of the Prophet Mohammed, he said ‘go and get knowledge even if it’s as far as China,’ so we are very open to knowledge, very open to knowledge, wherever you find it, as long as it is true.”

Southwest Indians renounced swastika
In Honoring Indians with Swastikas, I noted how Indians and non-Indians used swastikas in the early 20th century. You can imagine why both groups stopped using them, but here’s a particular act I hadn’t heard of before:

Western use of the swastika in the early 20th century

Shortly after the beginning of World War II, several Native American tribes (the Navajo, Apache, Tohono O’odham, and Hopi) published a decree stating that they would no longer use the swastika in their artwork. This was because the swastika had come to symbolize evil to the tourists who purchased their crafts. This decree was signed by representatives of these tribes. The decree states:

Because the above ornament which has been a symbol of friendship among our forefathers for many centuries has been desecrated recently by another nation of peoples.

Therefore it is resolved that henceforth from this date on and forever more our tribes renounce the use of the emblem commonly known today as the swastika or fylfot on our blankets, baskets, art objects, sandpainting, and clothing

.

Comment: As with their exemplary record of military service, this act shows the Indians’ patriotic love of America. Compare this with, say, Southern whites who embrace the Confederate flag or any whites who embrace a stereotypical Indian mascot.

It was not universally renounced, of course.

Melissa Cody

[…]

Navajo weaver Melissa Cody is interested in reinstating the Whirling Log as a sacred symbol (this puts her on the same page as the Raelians, a kooky UFO cult, as we covered in a previous story), and has used it extensively in her work. “I feel that it’s important to reclaim our traditional tribal imagery and not sway from instilling it into our everyday viewing,” she told ICTMN’s Alex Jacobs in an interview.[…]

Back in the early Seventies, there was a burger stand near Giant Rock, CA. In back of the stand was a home made flying saucer on a landing field festooned with Christmas tree lights. Sexuality in the Raelian movement

The Raelian Movement is a vocal advocate for the removal of sexual taboos and an embracing of one’s own sexuality. They teach that our alien creators, the Elohim, created us with the expectation that we would enjoy the pleasures of our bodies and our environment. This outlook has frequently led to the rumor that Raelian gatherings regularly descend into orgies.

Orgies are not a part of standard Raelian practices.

However, Raelians tend to be very sensual and forward people. They hug and kiss one another at meetings. They frequently dress in revealing clothes. They touch, massage and caress, but only among consenting participants.
It is not unusual for a visitor to be propositioned by an interested member at such a gathering, although refusal is not taken as offensive in any way, and in any case the sex certainly isn’t expected to be public.

Wait, does this mean the Pope isn’t the Antichrist? Is there an evil Antichrist alien? I’m so confused now:

LAS VEGAS, May 15 - Upon hearing that Pope Francis said he would welcome aliens at the Vatican and even baptize them, the spiritual leader of the International Raelian Movement has issued a correction.

“There will be no need to baptize those he calls “aliens” when they decide to come back,” Rael said in a statement released today by the IRM. “They are the ones who created all religions on Earth, and they were mistakenly taken for gods. Instead of offering them baptism, the pope will have to acknowledge that they are the gods he has been praying to all along.” […]

“By reading the original Bible without the distortion of the monotheist filter, anyone can access the information the Elohim wanted us to preserve,” she said. “Evidence of the their work is worldwide, and we ourselves are becoming creators as new forms of life are now being conceived and created in our laboratories. The arrogance of the pope in wishing to baptize those who sent Jesus shows the level of his ignorance.” […]

There was trade with China (“Serica”) in Roman times, but that was long over by Muhammad’s era, and wouldn’t be resumed until the Mongol conquests created a safe route in the 13th century.

The financial news out of Greece just gets worse with every passing minute it seems:

Euro zone finance ministers were told on Saturday that some 25 billion euros (18 billion pounds) of any bailout loan to Greece would be needed to recapitalise banks that are on the verge of collapse, sources close to the discussions said.

That is more than double the amount that Athens forfeited in financial stability funds at the end of June when it walked away from talks on completing a previous bailout programme.

The extra capital is needed because of the damage wrought by massive deposit withdrawals before a two-week bank holiday that was ordered on June 29, when Greece imposed capital controls to stop savers and businesses emptying their accounts.

Wait, does this mean the Pope isn’t the Antichrist? Is there an evil Antichrist alien? I’m so confused now:

Well, I’m glad we got that all cleared up.

Alrighty then, I think I’ve had my fill of nutburgers for the day.

Don’t forget Sun Ra, whose cosmology also included contact with aliens:..

“What’s killing the west now in this fight on terror, and Putin as well, is the politics of it. Can’t get anything done quickly, can’t mobilize fast. So, it’s going to happen. This anti-terror army is going to happen,” O’Reilly said confidently.

The mercenary army would create a “central command” to fight even against terror groups like Khorasan, O’Reilly said. Yet, according to O’Reilly, the army doesn’t exist because people don’t “have the will yet.”

Speaking of cults. I watched the whole Jim Jones/Guyana Peoples Temple massacre last night on CNN.

I had forgotten how sick and massive the forced suicides were. I am also reminded how much of a hero and inspiration is one Jackie Speier. Shot 5 times and left to hide in the jungle for 22 hours…

That would be the end for many, but she ran for her murdered boss, Leo Ryan’s, congressional seat only to lose. Then she persevered to win it 30 years later in 2008. Truly an amazing woman.

It’s Wikipedia, but the sources are good ones (though I obviously don’t have them on hand to verify what’s in them):

In the 5th century, the Quraysh took control of Mecca, and became skilled merchants and traders. In the 6th century they joined the lucrative spice trade as well, since battles in other parts of the world were causing trade routes to divert from the dangerous sea routes to the more secure overland routes. The Byzantine Empire had previously controlled the Red Sea, but piracy had been on the increase. Another previous route that ran through the Persian Gulf via the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, was also being threatened by exploitations from the Sassanid Empire, as well as being disrupted by the Lakhmids, the Ghassanids, and the Roman-Persian Wars. Mecca’s prominence as a trading center also surpassed the cities of Petra and Palmyra. The Sassanids however did not always pose a threat to Mecca as in 575 CE they actually protected the Arabian city from invasion of the Kingdom of Axum, led by its Christian leader Abraha. The tribes of the southern Arabia, asked the Persian king Khosrau I for aid, in response to which he came south to Arabia with both foot-soldiers and a fleet of ships into Mecca. The Persian intervention prevented Christianity from spreading eastward into Arabia, and Mecca and the Islamic prophet Muhammad who was at the time a six-year-old boy in the Quraysh tribe “would not grow up under the cross.”

I’ve seen swastikas in Japan and India (the one in India also incorporated the Star of David). So I guess the countries that used it before WWII continue to use it.

But other than those countries, the Nazis made it a symbol of evil that will be what people think of first when they see one, for hundreds of years.

Sorry I missed the local event yesterday. It would have been interesting to hear what they had to say.

122
Chez Ko Pe  Jul 12, 2015 • 6:09:23pm

Eric Idle as Otto in Monty Python’s Life of Brian wore a helmet bearing a symbol merging the Star of David and the Nazi swastika. His scenes as the leader of a fascist Jewish-purity faction were largely cut and “lost;” only a brief appearance leading his squad to commit suicide was left in. Oddly enough, his scenes remained intact in the published illustrated script.

I’m okay with the idea of rehabilitating the swastika; as noted, many cultures use the symbol, and taking it back from the Nazis robs them of power they should no longer have. I don’t think it’s actually going to succeed, though.
